Learning About Costa Rican Coffee with Doka Estate Coffee Tour

August 4, 2014 By Sammi 28 Comments

If you love coffee, then you must take a coffee tour in Costa Rica. Costa Rica produces some of the world’s highest quality coffee and countries like Japan, South Korea and United States purchase hundreds of thousands of pounds of Costa Rican coffee every year.

So if you are a coffee lover, you have to take a coffee tour in Costa Rica to learn about the process. We visited Doka Estate Coffee and did their Doka Coffee Tour which is one of our favorite tours in Costa Rica.

Doka Estate is 30 kilometers (19 miles) northwest from San Jose. It is about a 1 hour drive on a well paved road through the city

The Doka Estate Coffee Tour

Doka estate coffee tour is one of the oldest coffee plantations in the country. The family who owns and runs the plantation has been doing this for over 70 years! The estate is located up in the valleys of Alajuela with the perfect conditions to grow coffee: a cool climate of 17 to 28 degrees Celsius (63 to 82 F) , fertile soil and a high altitude of 800 to 1600 meters (2624 to 5249 feet).

Their coffee tour takes you through the entire process from planting the coffee tree, picking cherries, roasting and making the Costa Rican way. It’s an extremely fun, educational, interactive and interesting tour for anybody who likes coffee.

Station one – the plants

Coffee comes from a plant that grows cherries with the coffee bean inside. If you drive along the Central Valley, you’ll likely see rows and rows of these coffee plants. Our guide showed us what a coffee plant looks like at 1 year, 2 year, 4 year and full grown. It takes quite awhile for these plants to develop and start producing cherries.

Coffee pickers measure their cherries by baskets. One basket weighs 28 pounds and a good coffee picker can pick up to 18 baskets a day! It’s not an easy job being out there in the sun 11 hours a day and they get paid around $3 USD per basket. Majority of the coffee pickers nowadays are from Nicaragua.

Doka Estate Coffee Tour

Station 2, 3 and 4 – Coffee Processing (Washing, Peeling, Fermenting and Drying)

This station is the oldest wet mill in the country and this is where the cherries are separated by quality using water. Low quality coffee floats and high quality coffee sinks. Most of the floaters are green unripe cherries or berries that have holes chewed by worms.

Doka Estate Coffee Tour

Unfortunately we came in the off season so the mill wasn’t working. Coffee picking season is from September to February/March so we couldn’t see the process in action which would have been really interesting to see. The truck dumps the berries into the green container and the berries drop straight into the water.

Once they are separated by floaters and sinkers, the berries get carried into the next room where they get shelled and washed.

Doka Estate Coffee Tour

Next, they get directed into large holding areas to ferment in order to get rid of the sugar. After that, the beans need to be dried. There are two ways to dry the beans either by the sun or machine. Our guide told us that machine is faster but the quality and the flavor doesn’t turn out quite as good.

To hand dry, they rake out all the beans on a flat surface outside and sift through them every 45 minutes.

Station 5 – Storage

After the beans are dried, they go into storage and here you can find huge bags of coffee! They separate it out by quality which you can tell in the colors. At this point, you can peel the outside and find the coffee bean.

Doka Estate Coffee Tour

After this, Doka sends out the coffee to various other companies to be exported or roasted. We visited the Cafe Tres Generaciones to see how they roast the beans and the end product.

Doka Estate Coffee Tour

Purchasing Coffee

You can purchase coffee from the plantation and if you want to bring back coffee for souvenirs, I highly recommend buying it there. It is fresher and cheaper and you can’t get Doka in the supermarket.

The coffee ranges starts around $9 per bag and they have both whole and ground.

Doka Coffee Tour Review

Our knowledgeable guide made the tour very fun but educational at the same time. He used to be a coffee picker so he knows all the ins and outs of the procedure.

Learning the process of how something comes about is always an enlightening experience. We don’t think too much about it since we buy it from the grocery store, turn on the coffee maker and it ends there. In reality, it is a long process and it takes many workers to support the giant coffee addiction our world has.

Doka Coffee Tours from San Jose

If you have a car, you can drive to Doka and take the coffee tour at the plantation. I recommend making reservations as they run tours 5 times a day Mon – Fri and 4 times a day on the weekends and it can get very busy during high season. The Doka Estate Coffee Tour price is $18 – $65 per person depending on the package you get.

If you’re staying in San Jose and would like to do a tour, a very popular day tour from San Jose is the Doka Coffee Tour and La Paz waterfall gardens. We did this day trip with Expediciones Tropicales and it was really nice. It included breakfast, lunch, transportation, guide and entrance fees. If you would like to book this Coffee Tour with La Paz and/or Poas Volcano please fill out the form on this page and get a small discount!

Welcome to the Costa Rican coffee paradise!

In this blog post, we will share our personal experience of the Doka Estate Costa Rica Coffee Tour & Plantation.

We will share everything about Doka Estate, the coffee tour, the process, and how to plan your trip.

Doka Coffee Estate entrance

The History of Doka Estate

The Vargas family has been growing quality coffee in Costa Rica since 1940 , initially focusing on growing and later expanding into coffee processing and international export. Their brand, TRES GENERACIONES , established in 1996, represents their commitment to producing top-quality coffee by selecting and roasting the finest beans.

Doka Estate has won the SINTERCAFE award for Best Coffee in the World twice and is considered the best plantation in Latin America.

Since 1999, it has offered the “El Verdadero Tour de Café” or DOKA ESTATE COFFEE TOUR to both locals and foreigners, aiming to involve visitors in the coffee production process.

Additionally, Doka has the oldest Wet Coffee Storage in the country, powered by water without electricity, and is designated as a Historical and Architectural Heritage site by the Costa Rican government.

Doka Coffee Estate history

Doka Estate Costa Rica Coffee Tour & Plantation

The coffee tour experience takes you through the entire process of making coffee , from the plants to our cups.

We started the tour with a welcome drink, in Doka’s coffee. Shop, it was a coffee!

Our guide gave us a brief introduction before we jumped straight into the process.

Doka Coffee Estate coffee plants

The Coffee Process: From Bean to Cup

Step 1: growing coffee plants.

Our guide briefly explained to us the growing process of coffee plants, at Doka Estate the beans they process are all from arabica beans, the secret to their different flavors is how they are roasted.

We didn’t realize this before but, growing coffee plants take a LONG TIME! They are planted when one year old although you can only start harvesting coffee beans when the tree is four years old.

Step 2: The coffee bean process

During your Doka Estate Costa Rica Coffee Tour & Plantation, you will visit the oldest wet mill in the country . This is where they separate the freshly picked cherries by using water to define the quality, the beans that sink are THE BEST TO USE.

With the pressure of the water, the coffee beans are taken to the next room of the machine where they are washed and peeled.

Before removing them from the water, the beans stay 24 hours in the water to ferment. This is an important step because it breaks down the sugars in the bean.

Doka Coffee Estate Station Three

Step 3: Drying

The beans are then spread on the ground outside to dry in the sun . Our guide explained to us that they prefer to dry the beans in the sun because, firstly, it saves electricity, but most importantly, the sun enriches the taste of the coffee!

Alternatively, during the rainy season, they have a machine at the dedicated station to ensure the weather doesn’t stop production.

Step 4: Roasting

This is where the magic happens!

The secret to good coffee is HOW IS GETS ROASTED. First, you need to define what kind of coffee you would like to make. The lightest roast gives the strongest caffeine dosage and taste.

Different coffee beans roasted

Buying Doka Estate’s Coffee Varieties

The best part if you are a coffee lover, BUYING the coffee as a souvenir!

Doka Estate has different kinds of flavors you can choose from, so it all depends on your taste. We highly recommend buying your coffee there because you will support the Estate and snag the best price.

Planning Your Visit

Best time to visit.

Season: The best time to visit Doka Estate is during the coffee harvest season, which typically runs from October to March. This period offers the most dynamic insight into coffee production, from picking to processing.

Weather: Costa Rica has a tropical climate with a dry season (December to April) and a rainy season (May to November). Mornings are usually clearer and dryer, making them an ideal time for tours.

Tour Schedules

Operating Hours: Doka Estate is open for tours from Monday to Sunday. Tours often start early in the morning and continue until the early afternoon to avoid the rainier parts of the day.

Frequency: Tours are usually conducted in small groups and run several times a day. It’s recommended to check the official Doka Estate website or contact them directly for the most current schedule and availability.

Ticket Information

Pricing: Tour prices can vary depending on the type of tour and any additional experiences included, such as a full coffee tasting or a visit to the butterfly garden. Discounts may be available for children, students, or large groups.

Booking Your Tour: Booking is recommended, especially during peak tourist seasons. You can book online through the Doka Estate website or various tour operators in Costa Rica.

Doka Estate Costa Rica Coffee Tour & Plantation

What to Bring and Wear

  • Comfortable Clothing: Opt for light, breathable fabrics suitable for Costa Rica’s warm climate. Long sleeves and pants can offer protection from the sun and insects.
  • Sturdy Footwear: The plantation terrain can be uneven and sometimes slippery, especially after rain. Closed-toe, comfortable shoes with good grip are essential.
  • Sun Protection: A hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen will protect you from the tropical sun.
  • Water and Snacks: While the tour might include a coffee tasting, it’s a good idea to bring your water and perhaps a small snack, especially if you have specific dietary needs.
  • Camera: The plantation offers stunning scenic views and photo opportunities, from the lush coffee fields to the traditional processing equipment.

Doka Coffee Tours from San Jose: A Journey to Poas Volcano

Take a day trip from San José and see the best of Costa Rican coffee and Poas Volcano . Start at Doka Estate, where you’ll walk through green coffee fields and learn how coffee is made. You’ll get to smell fresh coffee and try some of the best coffee there.

Then, head over to Poás Volcano, close to the coffee farm. It’s amazing to see how different it is from the coffee farm. At Poás, you can see a huge crater with a blue-green lake inside. All around, there’s a forest full of different plants and animals. It’s a great way to see two cool places in Costa Rica in just one day.

Poas Volcano: Worth a Visit in 2024?

We loved our Doka Estate Costa Rica Coffee Tour & Plantation visit, if you are a coffee lover and you are traveling in the region, you should definitely add this tour to your itinerary!

We found this activity unique and educational, our guide gave us a lot of insight about the process and cultural significance in Costa Rica.

Traveler Comments

The entire experience at Doka was great. I only wished I purchased more coffee!

Mario was an excellent driver. He even arrived early and once again, the van was immaculate. The tour of Doka estate was well worth the effort. The tour was very informative and our docent spoke English very well. He guided our group through the various stages of coffee production. We stopped here on our way to La Fortuna. The tour took about two hours. Following the tour, participants had the opportunity to sample coffee, and of course, make some purchases.

Very relaxed and well paced tour. Informative and it was great being able to sample the coffees.

Moscow: City Sightseeing by Car/Bus

Visiting a new city is akin to going on a first date, it is something you will never forget. Many people imagine Moscow as just a bunch of sporadic landmarks: Red Square, the Kremlin, Lenin’s Mausoleum and GUM. There is so much more to this wonderful city than that and even though we only have a few hours, we will do all we can to show you everything we know and love about our capital in one fell swoop. We will take you on a journey through the ages, from centuries ago, right up to the modern day, soaking in the sights of this vast and bustling metropolis. Bright, luxurious and both ancient and modern at the same time, Moscow invites you on a date you’ll never forget!

On our sightseeing bus tour of the city, you will see:

  • The wonderfully historic city centre and its unique museums, magnificent cathedrals, the exquisite Chambers of the Romanov Boyars and of course, the famous towering red brick walls of the Kremlin, The charming beauty of the Alexander Garden awaits the capital's guests - a lush green oasis in the midst of the glass and concrete clad metropolis, basking in the etherial aura emanating from the whitewashed stone walls of the restored Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, the world- renowned fairytale onion domes of St. Basil's Cathedral and other impressive monumental buildings such as the library built in Lenin's honour - the Russian State Library - and the State Duma.
  • The Lubyanka KGB headquarters is notorious to members of older generations and although nowadays, the face of the secret police has changed dramatically, the looming enigmatic building on the waterfront maintains its aura of mystery, shrouded in a variety of murky rumours and dark myths. Then, there’s another of Moscow's main attractions - the marvellous Bolshoi Theatre, yew simply cant leave Moscow without taking in its breathtaking architecture. Engrained in the fabric of Russia's cultural heritage, virtuoso performers such as prima ballerina Galina Ulanova, opera singer Feodor Chaliapin and pianist, composer and conductor Sergei Rachmaninoff once stood centre stage of this vaunted institution.
  • The memorial complex on Poklonnaya Hill was constructed in the glory and honour of our heroes who defended our nation in the many crucial battles of the Great Patriotic War (WWII). This is a place that embodies a particularly acute and inextricable link between older ancf younger generations. Moving on to the Moscow International Business Centre, not dubbed ‘Moscow City' for nothing, a true glimpse of the future in the present. This incredible, rather jaw-dropping project in the capital has shown that Moscow has come to accept the age of the skyscraper. Finally, the stunning views from the observation deck at Sparrow Hills will leave professional and amateur photographers alike itching to capture them. How could one resist?

The most beautiful of all the world's cities - lady Moscow invites you out on a date!

Lena, our guide in Moscow was excellent. She was very knowledgable and could answer any question we had for her. We liked that she could pick up on our interests and take us places we might not have thought of to go. When we realized that one of the places we had chosen to see would probably not be that interesting to us, she was able to arrange entry to the Diamond Fund and the Armoury for us. Riding the Metro with Lena was a real adventure and a lot of fun. In Saint Petersburg we found Anna well versed in the history of the Tsars and in the Hermitage collection. Arkady in Veliky Novgorod was a very good guide and answered all of our questions with ease. Novgorod was perhaps a long way to go for a day trip, but we did enjoy it. Vasily was a great driver to have and kept us safe with good humour and skill. We enjoyed ourselves so much, my daughter says she is already planning to return. We would both have no hesistation to recommend ExpresstoRussia to anyone we know.

Just wanted to let you know that My grandson Bruno and I couldn´t have been more pleased with our week in Moscow (6/15 - 6/21). We were absolutely enchanted with the whole experience, including getting lost a couple of times in the Metro during our free time. Although both our guides (both Eleanas) were excellent, I would particularly commend the first one (she took us to the Tatiakov, the KGB tour, and to that beautiful cemetery where so many great Russian artists, authors, composers, musicians, militarists, and politicians are buried). Her knowledge is encyclopedic; and her understanding of today´s Russia as a product of its past was, for us, truly enlightening. I will be taking another tour in Russia, with my wife, within the next two or three years. I will be in touch with you when the time comes. Meanwhile, I will refer you to other potential visitors to Russia as I meet them.

Moscow, a City Like No Other

Moscow is Russia’s largest city with a population of between 12 and 13 million. It is also Europe’s largest city and when you visit Moscow, you can feel it. The layout and architecture of the city is eclectic, ranging from crooked, ancient streets and alleyways to wide, bustling boulevards, from medieval churches to Stalin skyscrapers and to modern, glass buildings towering over everything and of course in the center of it all is the Kremlin and the magnificent Red Square. Moscow is also home to a fantastic, efficient and very beautiful metro system – each station having its own special design. In fact, Express to Russia’s Moscow metro tours and excursions are some of our most popular attractions that we offer. On our Moscow tours, you will see this and more.

Moscow Tours centering on Russian History

Moscow has a long and interesting history and has been the capital of Russia in many of its different iterations – capital of the Grand Duchy of Moscow , the Russian Empire and of course the Soviet Union (who could ever forget the Soviet Union?). Moscow, was founded in the 12th century by Prince Yuri Dolgaruki (Yuri of the long arms – he really did have long arms!). From that time on, it was home to the Russian Tsars until Peter the Great moved the capital to St. Petersburg in 1703. The city has survived invasions and sieges from the Mongols, the Tartars, the Poles, Lithuanians and Napoleon but has always persevered. Our Moscow tours will enlighten you on this great history and give you insights into Muscovites and their unique culture. Our Moscow tours show you what the city is like today but also brings to life the past. Moscow never seems to sleep and is bursting with energy. A Moscow tour with Express to Russia is truly the best way of getting to know Russia’s largest and most vibrant city.

Frequently Asked Questions From Our Travelers

What is the best time to visit moscow.

Any time of year is fine depending on what you plan to do. Summertime is pleasantly warm, ideal for exploring the city and its vibrant atmosphere, but Moscow will be much busier and accommodation is more expensive. Winter can be quite cold but beautiful nonetheless, and this is unproblematic if you intend to spend most of your trip in museums and galleries. There are also various festivals and events organised throughout the year. For more information about the best time to visit, read our guide

How many days are enough in Moscow?

If you plan your itinerary strategically and aren’t averse to a packed schedule, you can cover Moscow’s main sights over a long weekend. Most popular attractions are in the city centre, and the Moscow Metro allows you to cover much ground in a small amount of time. Ensure that your accommodation is fairly central and book tickets in advance, so that you can make the most of your days. For an informative and well-organised day out, check out our Moscow day tours with options to suit all interests.

Do they speak English in Moscow?

As Russia’s capital city, tourists are well accommodated in Moscow. There should be English-speaking staff in restaurants, bars, hotels, shops and attractions in tourist hotspots, and there are also English-speaking tourist police. Transport services have English translations on their maps and English announcements via intercom; alternatively, order taxis from the Yandex Taxi app (Russian Uber), though it’s unlikely that your taxi driver will speak English. If you get stuck and cannot communicate, it’s fine to use Google Translate.

Is it safe to travel to Moscow?

It is no less safe to travel to Moscow than to any European city if you exercise common sense and look after your belongings. As with every city some regions can be more unsavoury than others, but no tourist attractions are located there. The traffic in Moscow is notorious, so exercise caution when crossing roads. Do not take unlicensed taxis; book in advance or take public transport, which is widespread and perfectly safe. If you encounter any problems, look for the special tourist police who can help you.
