Duke Sport Clubs: Spring Break Dream Trip Highlights

Duke Rec & P.E. provides oversight of 31, student-run, sport-based clubs that practice regularly and travel and host competitions against other colleges and universities. In addition to our Sport Club’s normal operations, our program is lucky to be able to extend the opportunity for clubs to attend what we call “Dream Trips” thanks to a generous endowment gifted to our program by the Gorter Family in honor of Kevin Gorter – a previous Sport Club participant.

Dream Trips are a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for our Sport Clubs to travel to a location that is considered a hub of their sport to get access to coaching, competition, or practice facilities that they would not normally have access to. Clubs begin preparing for Dream Trips the academic year before and go through a rigorous and competitive process to be selected to attend a Dream Trip.

This year, 8 of our clubs were awarded the opportunity to attend a Dream Trip over Winter or Spring Break. Check out the highlights from our four Spring Break Trips!

Women’s Club Lacrosse: Santa Barbara, CA

“Our trip to Santa Barbara, CA was an unforgettable experience. We were able to bring 20 members to the Santa Barbara Shootout tournament that our club team has been attending for over 10 years. This year was the first time we were able to return since covid and therefore was the first dream trip for all of our current members. We played against multiple teams that we would never have been able to play, including Oregon University and Oregon State. We went to the beach, spent a day traveling around LA, and visited the beautiful Santa Ynez Valley and the little town of Solvang - the Danish capital of America!

The most rewarding part of the trip was the time spent with our teammates. We had multiple group dinners and even watched the Duke vs. UNC basketball game together. We are so fortunate for the opportunity to spend time together and compete on beautiful fields nestled between the mountains. We are grateful to the Duke Club Sports Program and Office as well as the Gorter family for making this all possible. I know the team will continue to work to make this trip a possibility in the future and I am so excited to see everyone grow.”

-- Morgan Robinson, Club President

Women’s Club Soccer: Costa Rica

“Women’s Club Soccer had the most incredible time in Costa Rica. Our trip started bright and early at the airport at 3:00 am, but our energy was still high! On our first day, we went on a tour of San José to learn about the history and culture of the capital city. We started our next day with a game against Universidad de Costa Rica followed by a long bus ride through the cloud forest to La Fortuna.

Our next day was packed, beginning with a trip to La Fortuna Waterfall (where we climbed 200+ steps) to swim under a beautiful waterfall. Then we went to Don Juan’s educational farm for a tour and a delicious lunch made from fruits and vegetables grown right there on the farm–including delicious homemade coconut popsicles! Next, we visited the Arenal Volcano where we hiked to a beautiful view surrounded by old lava flows. To end the day and soothe our sore muscles, we visited the nearby hot springs for a relaxing soak…and for a couple of trips down the water slide!

Next, we headed south to Puntarenas where we played the local team Futbol Garabito. We spent the next day relaxing at Manuel Antonio State Park, swimming in the ocean and seeing the wildlife. We ended our trip back in San Jose where we played Fútbol Femenino Coronado and secured our first win!

We were confronted by an incredibly different style of play in Costa Rica but we are proud to have adapted and grown like never before. Our team cohesion grew exponentially both on and off the field. We will miss the daily rice and beans, beautiful sunsets, and our amazing tour guide Eddy. The once-in-a-lifetime trip will go down in Women’s Club Soccer history!”

-- Chloe Freitas, Club Officer

Club Rowing: Gainesville, GA

“Club Rowing had the amazing opportunity to travel to Lake Lanier in Gainesville, Georgia for our spring break training trip! Georgia weather is usually very sporadic, but this year we were able to get out and train on Olympic water twice a day with one rainy day built in for rest. For our new novices and multi-year varsity rowers, this weeklong trip is the equivalent of over a month of training at Duke in terms of time spent on the water. This week alone we spent over 20 hours on the water and hit over 80km! At Duke, we are limited by the sunrise/sunset time and classes, but over the break we can spend as much time on a specific drill as we need – and the results showed. Our boats were much more set and glided effortlessly across the water by the end of the week. Consistently rowing with the race lineups also allowed people to get a feel for who they are competing with and how to monitor their body position during the drive and recovery of their strokes. The Olympic racecourse also enabled us to practice race starts for the first time this year, just in time for our upcoming Spring sprints!

Off the water we stayed at a beautiful lake house and in between naps we bonded as a time watching basketball games, playing pool, kayaking, and taking full advantage of the house’s hot tub. The officers went to the store and bought all the food for the week and cooked delicious dinners for all the hungry rowers. Each night we would finalize with film sessions so that we knew what to correct the following day. Overall, we had an incredible week and cannot wait to let the results show in our upcoming regattas!”

-- Connor McDerott, Club Officer

Women’s Club Basketball – Puerto Rico

“Our trip to Puerto Rico as Duke’s Women’s Club Basketball team was an adventure of a lifetime. From going head-to-head with local teams on the court to exploring the island's beautiful landscapes, every moment was an opportunity for growth, competition, and connection.

Playing against the local teams was a highlight for us all. We brought our A-game to the court and faced some tough competition. Yet, beyond the wins and losses, it was the bonds we formed with our fellow athletes that truly made the experience unforgettable. Through shared love for the game and mutual respect, we forged new friendships that transcended language and cultural barriers. Practicing our Spanish with the other players became not only a way to communicate but also a bridge to forming deeper connections.

Off the court, our adventures were equally exhilarating. We snorkeled in the crystal-clear waters, cliff-jumped in the El Yunque National Rainforest, and toured the streets of Old San Juan. These activities brought us closer together, but specifically, going to the rainforest, it wasn't just the adrenaline rush that made this experience memorable. As each member of the team gathered the courage to take the jump, we became more than just teammates—we became a support system, cheering each other on and encouraging one another to conquer our fears. Those who hesitated at the edge found comfort in the unwavering support of their teammates, emboldened by the cheers and applause from the sidelines.

Puerto Rico wasn't just a destination for us—it was a journey of growth, friendship, and shared experiences. And as we reflect on the experiences shared and the friendships established, we know that the bonds we created will endure long after the echoes of the final buzzer have faded away.”

-- Jewel Levy, Club Officer

Duke men's basketball guard Jaylen Blakes to enter transfer portal

Jaylen Blakes passes the ball in Duke's Round of 64 game against Vermont.

Another player from this year’s Blue Devil squad is on his way out.

Junior guard Jaylen Blakes, a rotational piece who struggled to find consistent minutes at times this year playing behind a talented group of guards, announced via Instagram that he is entering the transfer portal as a graduate.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Jaylen Blakes (@j.b00gi)

The 6-foot-2 product of Blair Academy was a strong defensive presence all year, but struggled to provide an offensive spark. His athleticism, speed and quick hands helped him generate key turnovers, but the uncanny scoring ability of guards including freshmen Jared McCain and Caleb Foster, sophomore Tyrese Proctor and senior Jeremy Roach relegated Blakes to the bench for most of the season.

That being said, Blakes likely will find plenty of suitors in the portal. He averaged 9.1 minutes per game this season, and started a total of three games over the course of his three seasons in Durham. Blakes posted a total of 21 steals and five blocks this year, impressive when one considers his struggles to find playing time. He tied his career high in points against Charlotte earlier this season, going 3-for-3 from behind the arc. However, his shooting from deep in general was a much less inspiring 26.3% his final season with the Blue Devils.

The announcement marks the fifth player to leave head coach Jon Scheyer’s squad, following the departures of Mark Mitchell and Christian Reeves for the transfer portal. Blakes likely would have once again been stuck behind more talented freshmen, as the Blue Devils welcomed talented combo guards in Darren Harris, Isaiah Evans and Kon Knueppel II to the squad for the 2024-25 season. Now, Blakes will look to find more minutes on another team.

Duke freshman guard Jared McCain celebrates during 78-70 win over No. 10 Baylor

Game Recap: Men's Basketball | 12/20/2023 9:38:00 PM

No. 21 Duke Surges Past No. 10 Baylor, 78-70

  • Jared McCain quickly got Duke on to the board, knocking down a mid-range jumper on the Blue Devils' first possession of the night. A three-pointer by Jeremy Roach and two free throws by McCain gave Duke the early lead, 7-3, just over two minutes into the game.
  • The Blue Devils took their first double-digit lead, 18-8, following a fast-break layup by Mark Mitchell at the 13:35 mark of the opening half. Duke remained ahead, 20-12, at the second media timeout of the half, behind a game-high nine points by McCain.
  • Baylor used a 9-0 scoring burst to draw within one, 26-25, with 5:34 remaining before half. The Bears took the lead, 28-26, with a three-pointer, but Roach answered with a floater to knot the score at the final media timeout of the opening frame.
  • McCain moved into double-figures, the first player to do so in the game, putting Duke back in front, 32-30. At the break, the Blue Devils remained ahead by the same margin, 34-32.
  • The two teams traded buckets out of the break, combining to score 11 points within the first three minutes of second-half action. Two free throws by Roach at the 16:28 mark pushed the senior in double-digits and Duke ahead, 40-39. Back-to-back three-pointers gave Baylor its largest lead of the game, 48-42, leading to a Duke timeout with 14 minutes remaining in the game.
  • Five consecutive possessions ended in made shots, before Kyle Filipowski was fouled on a three-pointer, triggering the under-12 media timeout with Baylor in the lead, 54-48.
  • McCain and Caleb Foster scored on back-to-back trips down the floor, putting Duke back in front, 55-54. The Blue Devils defense forced two straight turnovers and extended is scoring run to 9-0, claiming a 57-54 lead as the clock ticked under nine minutes.
  • The back-and-forth affair continued, with both squads trading baskets. Ryan Young reached 1,000 career points with a layup at the 5:35 mark, giving the Blue Devils a 63-61 edge. A step-back by Roach on the next possession was followed by a McCain three-pointer to establish a nine-point lead for the Blue Devils, 70-61.
  • The Duke run reached as large as 14-1 to help the Blue Devils secure the 78-70 victory.
  • With the win, Duke improved to 2-0 all-time against Baylor. Both games were played on a neutral court – the previous meeting was in the 2010 NCAA Tournament in the Elite Eight, with Duke emerging with the 78-71 victory.
  • Wednesday night marked the 59th game at current Madison Square Garden for Duke. With the win, the Blue Devils moved to 41-18 in the venue. Duke has won seven straight and eight of its last nine at MSG.
  • At all NBA arenas, Duke has won 23 of its last 26 and moved to 2-0 this season and 96-33 all-time in NBA venues.
  • All five Duke starters scored in double-figures, marking the first time this season the Blue Devils had five players eclipse 10 points.
  • The win over No. 10 Baylor marked Duke's first win over an opponent ranked between No. 6-10 since defeating No. 10 Kentucky, 79-71, on Nov. 9, 2021, and first overall top-10 victory since defeating No. 1 Gonzaga, 84-81, on Nov. 26, 2021.
  • With the victory, head coach Jon Scheyer secured the first top-10 victory of his coaching career.
  • Duke held Baylor to 70 points, 18.4 below its scoring average of 88.4 points. The Blue Devils have now held each of their 11 opponents below their respective scoring average.
  • Freshman Jared McCain scored a game-high 21 points, matching his season-best point production and marking the second time in three games he has led the team in scoring. The Sacramento, California, native shot an efficient 7-of-11 (.636) from the field and connected on 3-of-6 (.500) from deep – his third straight game with at least three successful three-pointers. The Blue Devils are now 4-0 when he reaches that threshold.
  • Jeremy Roach scored 18 points, shooting 5-of-9 (.556) from the field. The senior guard also went 1-of-2 (.500) from beyond the arc and 7-of-8 from the foul line. Roach has now made a three-pointer in six consecutive games, matching the longest streak in his career.
  • Mark Mitchell scored 10 points, his seventh game of the season with at least 10 points and 23rd career double-digit performance. Duke is now 21-2 when Mitchell scores 10 or more.
  • Kyle Filipowski logged his fourth double-double of the season and second consecutive, scoring 13 points while adding 10 rebounds. The sophomore now has 20 career double-doubles in 47 games played.
  • Caleb Foster rounded out Duke's double-digit scoring, putting up 12 points while grabbing a career-high five boards.
  • Ryan Young 's layup at 5:35 of the second half provided the team captain with his 1,000th career point. He added a pair of free throws and now sits at 1,002, including 258 points at Duke and 744 at Northwestern (2019-22).
  • "What an honor to play in [Madison Square Garden]. This has been a special place for us, especially to play right before Christmas... just seeing the crowd show up, and all the Duke fans in New York, what a special thing. For these guys, I know they love playing in it. It's great coaching in it. To play a team like Baylor, to get tested by a team who really had, coming in, a top-five offense in the country, best three-point shooting team, top-five offensive rebounding team, and a great culture. They've been a winning program. So, it's an honor for us to play them. I thought we were incredibly tough tonight. I'm not saying Baylor wasn't. I thought we were more mentally tough down the stretch, which is what this program has been about. I thought our defense throughout was pretty good. I mean, they're an explosive offensive team. They're going to score some points. I'm really proud of this game, proud of just the mental toughness that we've shown." - head coach  Jon Scheyer
  • "It's definitely big to get a win. Obviously against Baylor, they're a great team. But we just wanted to kind of prove to ourselves that we can do it. Obviously, we had three tough losses early in the season and I felt like I didn't kind of set the tone. I wasn't leading the right way. I wasn't doing what I needed to do. Just forget the offense. Forget everything. Just me leading and my presence there, like coach said, has been a big thing." - senior Jeremy Roach
  • "There's really no words to describe it (playing in Madison Square Garden). I mean, I'm in New York, at Christmas time. Going to see the Rockefeller tree tomorrow. I'm excited. This is just a surreal moment. I visualize a lot of stuff and I visualized coming into the locker room celebrating. And it happened. There's no words to describe it. It was amazing." - freshman Jared McCain
  • No. 21 Duke returns to Cameron Indoor Stadium for its final non-conference game of the 2023-24 season, taking on Queens on Dec. 30. The first meeting between the two teams starts at 2 p.m., airing on The CW.

Duke Basketball Guard Bids Farewell to Blue Devils

Duke basketball junior Jaylen Blakes has one season of eligibility remaining to play elsewhere.

  • Author: Matt Giles

In this story:

Following three years as a gritty defender and team-first contributor off the Duke basketball bench, Jaylen Blakes announced his intention to transfer to another program on Saturday afternoon. There's no telling yet where he'll end up to play his final year of college ball.

Whichever program lands him will be getting a proven defensive sparkplug, albeit with undeniable limitations on the other end of the floor.

RELATED: Prediction Pops Up for Outbound Duke Transfer

The 6-foot-2 combo guard out of Somerset, N.J., a former four-star prep and the last recruit to commit to now-retired legend Mike Krzyzewski, is on track to receive his degree this spring. Therefore, Blakes will appear in the portal as a graduate transfer.

As a junior this past season for a Blue Devil squad that finished 27-9 overall and upset No. 1 seed Houston in the Sweet 16 before losing to nearby ACC foe NC State two nights later in Dallas, Blakes saw action in 31 games. He averaged 1.8 points, 0.8 rebounds, and 0.7 steals across only 9.2 minutes per outing.

Jaylen Blakes is entering the transfer portal as a grad transfer pic.twitter.com/OGAfWfPxtz — Duke Basketball In Depth (@DukeInDepth) April 13, 2024

He's the third Blue Devil to enter the transfer portal this cycle, joining Mark Mitchell and Christian Reeves.

Meanwhile, Duke basketball is preparing to welcome six heralded freshmen this summer in Cooper Flagg, Khaman Maluach, Isaiah Evans, Kon Knueppel, Patrick Ngongba II, and Darren Harris. They comprise the nation's top-ranked recruiting class.

And the Blue Devils are set to welcome back Tyrese Proctor , according to multiple reports this week, as fans await official word on the plans of Jeremy Roach, Jaden Schutt, Caleb Foster, Sean Stewart, and TJ Power.

If all of the above players return for Jon Scheyer's third season as head coach, then Duke would have only one scholarship spot left to fill on the 2024-25 roster.

2024 NBA Draft: Duke's Kyle Filipowski turns pro after All-American sophomore season for Blue Devils

Filipowski is heading to the nba draft after shining for the blue devils.

getty-armando-bacot-kyle-filipowski.jpg

Duke star Kyle Filipowski has declared for the NBA Draft after earning All-American honors during a standout sophomore season, he announced Friday. The 7-foot center is a versatile big man and potential lottery pick with the mobility and skill to flex his game out to the perimeter on both ends of the floor.

Filipowski proved durable during his two years under coach Jon Scheyer, starting all 72 of Duke's games over the past two seasons. The former five-star prospect could have turned pro after winning ACC Rookie of the Year as a freshman but opted to return and continue developing his game. As a sophomore, he earned second-team All-American honors from CBS Sports.

"After careful consideration and consultation with the people closest to me, I have decided to declare for the NBA Draft," Filipowski wrote in a social post announcing his decision. "This has been a lifelong dream of mine, and I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to pursue it. Thank you, Duke Nation. Your unwavering encouragement and belief in me have fueled my determination to reach this point. Whether you've cheered for me from the stands, followed my career online or simply sent positive vibes my way, please know that your support has meant the world to me."

Among Filipowski's most appealing attributes are his flashes of perimeter shooting — he hit 34.8% of his 3-point attempts this season — and his defensive mobility. Filipowski was rated Duke's top defender in the 2023-24 season by  evanmiya.com .

Kyle Filipowski's NBA Draft projection

In a relatively weak draft class, Filipowski appears to have a higher floor than some of his peers. Some general managers might view him as a "tweener" who is too small to bruise with NBA centers and not agile enough to play power forward. But enterprising scouts and executives will see the skill packaged within Filipowski's big frame and appreciate how he could be a matchup problem for opponents at the next level.

Filipowski ranks No. 15 in the  2024 NBA Draft Prospect Rankings from CBS Sports. He landed at No. 15 in a recent mock draft from Kyle Boone.

"Filipowski led Duke in scoring and rebounding this season and showed significant improvement from his freshman to sophomore year in the process," Boone wrote. "The 7-footer has a versatile skill set that figures to be a safe projection to the NBA."

Impact on Duke

Getting Filipowski back for a second season was a bargain for Duke and coach Jon Scheyer. Having him around for a third season would have been unfathomable. But Scheyer is headed into his third season with another blockbuster signing class on the way. The Blue Devils' 2024 haul is ranked No. 1 nationally by 247Sports and is headlined by No. 1 overall prospect Cooper Flagg. Three other top-20 prospects are part of Duke's class, including five-star center Patrick Ngongba II. With Filipowski, Mark Mitchell , Ryan Young and Christian Reeves all departing, the Blue Devils will look drastically different around the rim next season.

Duke commit Cooper Flagg leads Team USA past Team World at Nike Hoop Summit

PORTLAND — Over 100 NBA scouts and executives packed the Coach K gym on Nike's campus this past week for the Nike Hoop Summit to not only watch 12 of the top U.S. players practice and scrimmage but also 12 international players from 12 different countries, including Qatar , Lithuania, Ghana and the Bahamas. To conclude the festivities, the 24 players played a FIBA-ruled game Saturday night at the Moda Center, home for the Portland Trail Blazers .

During the game between Team USA and Team World, it felt like more than just a high school all-star game with players competing from the jump. It was a two-point game at the half and both teams kept it close until halfway through the fourth quarter. Team USA went up by 10 points and Team World didn't have an answer, with Team USA pulling away and getting the 98-75 win. It was an evenly matched game for three quarters with a few future NBA stars sharing the court.

Team USA was led by Duke commit Cooper Flagg, who hit early foul trouble in the first half but really came alive in the second half, hitting 3s, making shots off the dribble and catching lobs. Flagg finished with 19 points, 11 rebounds and two assists in the win. Also leading the charge for Team USA was 6-foot-9 wing Asa Newell. The Georgia commit played well both inside and outside the paint, netting 17 points and grabbing 10 rebounds.

"When you put this jersey on and you're representing your country, it means something more," Flagg said after the game. "There's a lot of talent on the World Team and all week we were hearing that they were better than us so this game definitely meant more."

🇺🇸 @Cooper_Flagg with the exclamation point on the fastbreak 📺 FS1 pic.twitter.com/MFXvZKF9lk — USABJNT (@usabjnt) April 14, 2024

This was the most talented World team in recent memory with five high-major college commits and the No. 1 player in the high school junior class, AJ Dybantsa, who led all players with 21 points. French point guard Nolan Traore was a steady floor general all game and got to the rim with ease, finishing with 18 points and four assists. Baylor commit VJ Edgecombe was also solid in the backcourt and added 17 points and five rebounds in the loss.

"Every country has hoopers," Edgecombe told Yahoo Sports. "It’s becoming more universal and there’s talent coming from everywhere now, not just the U.S. Buddy [ Hield ] and Deandre [ Ayton ] paved the way for someone like me from the Bahamas and I'm just looking to do the same for little kids watching me play."

There is no question that the NBA is becoming a more global game. Many of the top NBA stars are international players: Nikola Jokić ( Serbia ), Luka Dončić (Slovenia), Giannis Antetokounmpo (Greece), Shai Gilgeous-Alexander ( Canada ) and Victor Wembanyama ( France ). In this year's draft, there are several overseas players projected toward the top, with Alex Sarr (France), Zaccharie Risacher (France) and Nikola Topić (Serbia) all potential lottery picks.

Dybantsa, a 6-8 guard who represented both Jamaica and Republic of Congo, is one of the top players in high school, regardless of class. He played his junior year at Prolific Prep (Napa, California) and has been a player on NBA scouts' radar for the last two years, playing up two divisions in Nike's EYBL last year and being the No. 1 option on offense anytime he's on the court. Dybantsa and Cameron Boozer are trending toward the top of the 2026 NBA Draft.

“[Dybantsa's] scoring instincts are unmatched at the high-school level and his 3-point shot is showing improvement," one NBA scout told Yahoo Sports. "There's a reason why so many executives are here this week and it's not just for Cooper [Flagg] and Ace [Bailey]."

Traore, a 6-3 guard out of France, was the best point guard for the World team and is part of the next group of French talent coming up, following Wembanyama and Washington Wizards guard Bilal Coulibaly .

"The next generation of French players is going to be really good," Traore told Yahoo Sports. "It's getting more and more competitive and the talent is so good with younger players coming up and seeing what Victor [Wembanyama] and Bilal [Coulibaly] are doing in the NBA."

Hamad Mousa, a 6-6 guard from Qatar, first caught NBA scouts' attention at Basketball Without Borders during All-Star Weekend with how well he shot the 3-ball and defended the perimeter. His time on the court for the World team was extra special with his dad, Yassin, playing in the game 24 years ago.

Yassin Mousa played in the Nike Hoop Summit in 2000 and tonight he got to watch his son Hamad play for the World team in the same game 24 years later. Special moment for his family and the country of Qatar. pic.twitter.com/AV1ZHlmpyr — Krysten Peek (@krystenpeek) April 14, 2024

"It’s really special to be able to play in this game, especially with my dad playing back in 2000, this was always a goal of mine," Mousa told Yahoo Sports. "Just being from Qatar is huge and I get a lot of messages from back home with people just supporting me. Not a lot of players come out of Qatar, so just to represent my country and show other kids they can play at this level, it means a lot."

The gap between talent in the United States and overseas is getting smaller and smaller. Saturday night's game is an early taste of what's coming to the NBA from all over the world and basketball fans should be thrilled about the young talent coming up outside of America.
