In the 1930s, a Norwegian businessman named Bert Enger found massive success in Duluth selling furniture. After he bequeathed a large portion of his estate to the city of Duluth, Enger Tower was built as a tribute to him. Beyond the lofty heights, a handful of different gardens – including a Japanese Garden – surround the tower. When the weather is comfortable, it’s worth visiting the top and walking through the green space.

The Glensheen Mansion is something out of a history novel, with decadent architecture and an impressive surrounding landscape. Elegant walnut and mahogany wood panel ceilings, along with stained glass and original furniture from 1908, remain excellently preserved in this late Victorian masterpiece.

It’s like stepping into an incredibly maintained time capsule, without all the dust. On a group or self-guided tour, explore the mansion, cottage, maintenance building, carriage and boat houses, along with 12 acres of lakefront grounds and a terraced garden. The mansion has a lot to see, so save a whole morning or afternoon to do it justice.

Where to Stay

Staying near or in Canal Park is the best area but if you have a car, you won’t have trouble getting around if you find cheaper options elsewhere because Duluth isn’t that big! Even staying in Superior, WI or one of the smaller towns outside of Duluth is still convenient!

We stayed at The Suites Hotel and prices have gone up A LOT since then so it’s not the most affordable option anymore, but we really liked it!

Ely’s Peak

This is a 1.8 mile loop with a 396 foot gain. We definitely got lost walking in the winter with snow so the trails weren’t as tracked out but eventually got to the top. I suggest following along the map with All Trails !

Duluth is a city of about 86,000 people (2018) in northern Minnesota . It is one of the most scenic cities in the Midwest .

Understand [ edit ]

Duluth has always been a shipping town: first for furs, later for iron ore, timber, and grain. As a shipping and milling town, Duluth once had the most millionaires per capita in the United States. This is still reflected in the large number of mansions in the east end of town. Ocean-going vessels come up the St. Lawrence Seaway into the Great Lakes to Duluth Harbor. Since these "salties" go through the locks, they are smaller than the native "lakers" that stay within the Great Lakes. Ships under many flags, including Nigeria, Greece, and Denmark, frequently dock in Duluth to pick up grain and coal for overseas markets. Iron-ore and taconite still go to Indiana, Ohio, and Pennsylvania for processing into steel.

Built largely on a 700-foot (215-m) hill overlooking Lake Superior, Duluth also has a thriving tourism industry, with antique shops, excellent restaurants, cozy inns, and scenic views of the lake. There is a ski resort inside city limits. Canal Park and Superior Street have the highest concentrations of tourist destinations in the city. The famous Aerial Lift Bridge is on Lake Avenue, next to Canal Park. Particularly proud residents liken the city to San Francisco , which also has bridges, hills, a bay, and a thriving tourist business. The renowned Grandma's Marathon is held annually, named after Grandma's Saloon (restaurant) in Canal Park. The University of Minnesota-Duluth and St. Scholastica College are the two largest colleges in the city with over 12,000 students together.

Duluth is the western endpoint of the scenic North Shore Drive, which follows the rugged north coast of Lake Superior nearly 700 miles (1,120 km) to Sault Ste Marie (Ontario) . Across the bay is Superior , Wisconsin .

Climate [ edit ]

Set on deep Lake Superior, the largest freshwater lake in the world by surface area, Duluth can be cool or cold anytime of year. The official temperatures are reported from the airport, over the hill, and can be ten or more degrees (Fahrenheit) above the downtown temperatures. Sixties (about 18°C) for a high in August are not uncommon, but it can reach the 80s (about 28°C) just as easily. Bitter windchills can occur in the winter, although air temperatures generally do not go below -20°F (-29°C). Despite this, some people bike to work year-round. The temperatures can also change very rapidly, especially near the lake: a wind switch can be accompanied by a temperature drop of 30 degrees (F) in a couple of minutes.

By car [ edit ].

Duluth is about a 2½-hour drive north of the Twin Cities on Interstate 35. A driver entering Duluth on I-35 from the Twin Cities will be rewarded by a spectacular view of Duluth laid bare in the valley and Lake Superior into the horizon. Travelers not familiar with Duluth may be surprised at how elevated the surrounding hills are. The international airport sits at an elevation of 1,427 feet. After long hours of relatively flat scenery, the view is a treat, especially during peak fall colors. The highway then descends at a steep grade just to the east of downtown; Exit 256B is the recommended exit for most downtown attractions.

By bus [ edit ]

Duluth is served by Jefferson Lines . The main bus terminal is the 46.783956 -92.100739 2 Duluth Transportation Center at 228 W Michigan St in downtown Duluth; Jefferson Lines also stops at the College of St. Scholastica and the University of Minnesota-Duluth. Skyline shuttle runs 10 times a day between the Minneapolis-St Paul airport and Duluth downtown Radisson hotel. Landline Bus Service runs several direct shuttles a day between Minneapolis and Duluth Miller Mall and the airport.

By boat [ edit ]

Duluth-Superior (WI) is an international seaport, by way of the Great Lakes and the St. Lawrence Seaway, and while the taconite industry has dropped way off from the Iron Range, timber is still shipped by boat. Cruise ships that travel the Great Lakes have Duluth as a stop on their itineraries.

Get around [ edit ]

Driving is probably the best option for getting around Duluth. The city generally does not have any traffic problems, although it can get congested in Canal Park.

The city is built on a rather steep hill, so if you travel around anywhere other than downtown or I-35, make sure your brakes are in good order. It can be slushy in the winter as the road crews typically put down salt first, then plow the roads when traffic is lighter. However, being on the west side of the lake, Duluth doesn't normally receive the large lake-effect snowfalls, 2–6 in (51–152 mm) is the normal snowstorm.

US Highway 53 crosses from Wisconsin to the south to the Iron Range in the north, and will take you to Miller Hill Mall, on top of the hill on the west side. US Highway 2 runs east-west. Keep in mind that the majority of the city is laid out in a grid based on the Lake Superior shoreline. This is about 45 degrees off of true north, however the residents refer to east/west streets running parallel to the lake, and north/south avenues that are perpendicular to the lake. Lake Avenue is considered to be the dividing line between east and west.

By bus/taxi [ edit ]

Public bus and trolley services are operated by the Duluth Transit Authority (DTA) .

Uber and Lyft drivers are often available throughout the Twin Ports area.

Allied Taxi ( ☏ +1 218 722-3311 ) and SK Taxi ( ☏ +1 218-221-1604 ) offer transportation within the city limits and into Wisconsin as well.

Duluth is filled with plenty of activities for people of all ages. Canal Park is a tourist district on the lakefront filled with restaurants, cafes, shops and hotels. Some of Canal Park's attractions include a 4.2-mile long lakewalk, a lighthouse pier, the Lake Superior Maritime Visitor Center, the Great Lakes Aquarium, and the William A. Irvin floating ship museum. Those interested in boats will also enjoy watching vessels from around the world enter Duluth's port. The Duluth Aerial Lift Bridge historically dates back to 1901 and sits on Lake Avenue as a route to Duluth's Ship Canal. It's also known as a famous inland transportation route -- as Duluth's hub, it connects to the Minnesota Point peninsula island. The Glensheen Mansion stands atop the scenic coast of Lake Superior and was built by Chester and Clara Congdon. The Midwestern estate covers 12 acres, has 39 rooms and its exterior is surrounded with beautiful gardens and bridges detailing Duluth's history. Attend a guided tour of the entire mansion, including the Third Floor and Attic. Examine Clara's letters lying in the desk drawer and Chester's top hat hanging inside the closet. How to Get to Duluth

Duluth International Airport is directly accessible from Detroit, Minneapolis and Chicago airports, with plenty of connections from other American locations, and it's the easiest way to get to Duluth. Many of the hotels on Lake Superior offer shuttle buses, but if you don't have access to a transfer service, there are cab firms and limousine operators at the terminal. Expect to pay around $20-25 for a taxi to the city center.

Driving to Duluth is a great option if you are coming from cities in the northern part of the USA. Highway 8 connects the City to Minneapolis-St Paul. Those coming from Chicago need to take I-90, then I-94 before switching to Route 53 at Eau Claire.

Greyhound is the city's major intercity bus operator, and their major stop is at 4426 Grand Ave. They provide daily connections to cities like Minneapolis, Chicago, and St Louis, as well as a wide variety of indirect routes from other cities. Jefferson Lines also serve Duluth, and connect it to a number of Mid-Western destinations.

Cheaper accommodation can also be found at motels like the Super 8 and Comfort Inn on Route 35, just to the southwest of the city.

Downtown Duluth – You'll find Downtown Duluth between Mesaba Avenue and 4th Avenue East, and it's the business and cultural center of the city. As in many northern cities, you can get around the center via a network of skywalks, elevated pathways built to deal with the winter temperatures. Downtown is home to many of the major attractions, from the Lake Superior Aquarium to the Entertainment Convention Center, so many visitors choose to make it their base.

Chester Park – Duluth's most youthful, relaxed and creative district, Chester Park is where tourists go to be entertained and unwind at the city's best bars and music venues. Try the local brews at the Tavern on the Hill, mix with the students of U. Minnesota at Sara's Table cafe and wander through the hilly woods of Chester Park itself when the weather's fine.

Cody – Located on higher ground in south-western Duluth, Cody is the best place to stay if you intend to mix urban sight-seeing with getting back to nature. The area has miles of trails and ski slopes and wonderful views of the harbor, particularly along the Skyline Parkway route.

If you don't have your own set of wheels, taxis are a great way to see Duluth and local rates are reasonable. Using Uber can save you money, with a $1 basic fare, then $0.75 per mile (with the company's basic UberX vehicles).

Many people choose to rent a car during their stay in Duluth and with branches of Avis, Thrifty, and Hertz in the city center and at the airport, it's easy to pick up a vehicle if required. Expect to pay around $20 per day. Getting around is fairly easy, with a regular grid pattern next to the lake. The only thing to worry about in central Duluth are the steep gradients on roads leading out of the harbor district - so make sure your car's brakes are in good shape!

Alternatively, you'll find plenty of major brands at Miller Hill Mall, just outside of town, including American Eagle Outfitters, Claire's and J.C. Penney.

The best places to shop for food and drink are supermarkets like Super One Foods and Cub Foods, and there are up-market options like Whole Foods as well. Lake Superior glitters with summer rays of sun behind a Duluth skyline defined by solid urban shapes, an international harbor in Minnesota's northwest corner. This lively city, one of the largest in the state, is a hub for both outdoors enthusiasts and a popular destination for visitors searching out sophisticated shops, crisp green parks, big ships and historic homes.

By no means an overwhelming metropolis ? Duluth has a population well shy of 100,000 ? this is, nonetheless, one of the busiest port cities in the world, and manages to strike a pleasant balance between business and pleasure no matter the temperature. This is a destination the whole family will enjoy, and the occasional bear or moose wandering through city limits isn't complaining either.

Divide your time here between sights in Duluth and the wilderness a stone's throw out. The city itself lines Lake Superior for 26 miles, but most of the important sites are central to downtown. Leave time, during your stay, to do a bit of ship watching, explore the Great Lakes Aquarium, hop a harbor cruise and check out the museums house in "The Depot" (St. Louis County Heritage and Arts Center). If it's historic architecture you're after, head for Superior Street and or take a guided tour through the sweeping estate, Glensheen. Entertain any children in tow on a trip through the Lake Superior Zoo, then enjoyed a scenic train ride part way around the lake or along the St. Louis River.

It might require more effort to single out some outdoor activity from the selection at hand. When Lake Superior swells are within reason, consider a day of charter fishing, sea kayaking, sailing, or swimming. Land lovers (and lubbers) can stick to one of Duluth's many local parks and city trails or venture energetically on to the northern wilderness. Don't think that snow slows anyone down in this area ? there are miles of cross-country ski routes in Duluth proper, and downhill runs on offer at Spirit Mountain at the south end of town.

Additional planning tip: June, July, and August are the warmest ( and most recommended ) months to visit Duluth as temperatures are in the 70s to low 80s.

These are the perfect, and most enjoyable months to enjoy Lake Superior!

From mid-September through late October, brilliantly colored fall leaves start to decorate Duluth while temperatures hang in the mid-50s to low 60s.

Though it is definitely a bit chilly, fall is another great time to visit Duluth.

During the months of December-February, Duluth is covered in ‘feet’ of snow and temperatures are often well below zero degrees.

Winters in Duluth are reserved for ice hockey, ice fishing, skiing, snowmobiling – or any other indoor activities where you’ll stay warm and toasty.

Duluth Vacation Itinerary Ideas

Below you can find suggested Duluth family vacation itinerary ideas for spending one to three days in Duluth.

The itinerary suggestions are based on our personal experiences and are filled with recommendations for visiting the top attractions in Duluth .

No two Duluth vacations will be exactly the same, however, so use these itinerary suggestions as a guide.

You’ll need to adjust your itinerary as needed to account for the weather, where you stay, how much time you spend at each attraction, as well as the varying interests of your travel party.

*All of our top recommended restaurants, landmarks, and attractions are bolded. Their physical locations fit into the flow of this itinerary. If you choose to substitute a restaurant or attraction in their place, be sure to adjust the timing of your itinerary accordingly.

Duluth Family Vacation: Day 1

• Visit Enger Park and climb Enger Tower .
• Tour the Duluth Depot and ride the North Shore Scenic Railroad .
• Explore Canal Park and watch ships go under the Aerial Lift Bridge .
• Have lunch at Grandma’s Saloon and Grill .
• Continue to explore Canal Park, the Lighthouse Pier , and the free Maritime Museum .
• Take an afternoon Vista Fleet cruise in the harbor.
• Walk the Lakefront Trail and have dinner in the Fitger’s Complex .

Enger Park and Enger Tower

As one of the best things to do in Duluth, we always start the morning of Day 1 off with a trip to Enger Tower located within Enger Park.

Enger Tower stands at an elevation of 531′ above Lake Superior, providing panoramic views of Lake Superior and Duluth’s west end.

After strolling around the beautifully landscaped gardens of the park, be sure to climb the many staircases of the historic Enger Tower.

Each level of the tower provides fantastic views and photo ops!

Time spent: 30-45 minutes

Duluth Depot

Afterward, head down the hill to visit the Duluth Depot Railroad Museum and to ride the North Shore Scenic Railroad.

Duluth Depot is a historic train station built in 1892 that served seven different railway lines.

The museum here includes several historic trains (that you can walk through!), train replicas, train memorabilia, and displays of storefronts from the olden days.

Now on the list of U.S. National Register of Historic Places, the Depot is also home to the Lake Shore Scenic Railroad.

Lake Shore Scenic Railroad offers narrated train rides along the North Shore of Lake Superior.

Best sure to check out the weekly schedule to see if your trip aligns with the ever-popular Zephyr ride, Music & Pizza Train ride, or Thomas the Train event.

Time spent: 1 hour at the Depot museums; various lengths of train excursions available.

Canal Park, Duluth

After touring the Duluth Depot, head across the Interstate to spend the rest of the day in Canal Park.

Located in the harbor of Lake Superior, Canal Park is the cornerstone of any Duluth travel itinerary whether you’re heading there with kids or going to Duluth as a couple .

Canal Park is the conversion of an old warehouse district into a variety of restaurants, shops, art galleries, indoor and outdoor cafes, and lakeside hotels.

While strolling through Canal Park, the highlight is watching ships from around the world entering the harbor.

Kids never get tired of watching the port’s famous Aerial Lift Bridge rise up and down to let passing ships through as its iconic whistle notifies onlookers.

Be sure not to miss an incoming or departing ship by reviewing the daily ship schedule!

Regardless of ‘big ships’ coming through, the Aerial Lift Bridge rises every hour on the hour, and half-hour throughout the entire day to let scheduled resident and tourist boats pass under.

Other things to do in Canal Park include:

• The Duluth Lakewalk (a 7.5-mile paved pedestrian and bike trail stretching from Bayfront Park to Brighton Beach)
• North Lighthouse Pier
• The free Lake Superior Maritime Visitor Center
• Multiple splash fountains
• Horse-drawn carriage rides
• William A. Irvin floating ship museum

Additional planning tips: There are open-air parking lots located directly within Canal Park that require either a pre-paid hourly or daily fee.

Park your vehicle in one central location ( or keep it parked at your hotel listed below).

Being that all of the attractions in Canal Park are located within walking distance of one another, you don’t have to drive from place to place.

Time spent: All afternoon and evening

Vista Fleet

In order to fully experience Duluth and Lake Superior, I recommend taking a narrated sightseeing tour on the Vista Fleet .

With the dock and ticket center located directly in Canal Park, hopping aboard a Vista Fleet cruise is not only convenient, but it is one of the most memorable things you’ll do in Duluth.

On the 75-minute Duluth Waterfront Tour, for instance, you’ll get to cruise under the Aerial Lift Bridge and sail along Duluth’s shoreline while learning about Lake Superior.

Afterward, the tour takes you for a behind-the-scenes sail into the shipping harbor as you learn about cargo ships, the Coast Guard, and Duluth’s shipping industry.

With several other cruise options available, the amazing views you’ll see on the open decks of the Vista Fleet are completely unique to this area.

Where To Eat and Drink in Duluth, MN: Day 1

Have lunch at the original Grandma’s Saloon and Grill (our #1 pick for the best restaurants in Canal Park !).

Enjoy salads, sandwiches, and entrees on the patio while practically sitting at the foot of the Aerial Lift Bridge.

Treat the family to an afternoon ice cream cone or float at Grandma’s Ice Cream Boxcar.

We visit the Boxcar, which is located right next to the Maritime Museum, every time we visit Canal Park.

Later, walk 1 mile down the paved Lakewalk and enjoy dinner at Fitger’s Brewhouse Brewery and Grille .

Fitger’s Brewhouse is one of the best breweries in Duluth and has award-winning lagers and ales handmade from locally harvested ingredients and Lake Superior waters.

The pub food is designed to complement the beer and is made from fresh, local ingredients as well.

My favorites are their wheat ales and the Brewhouse Fish Tacos!

Rain Option: Day 1

If you are seeking shelter or an indoor attraction located directly in Canal Park, check out Adventure Zone .

Choose single play or a daily pass to play laser tag, mini-golf, and arcade games.

Batting cages and a climbing wall are also located here.

Duluth Family Vacation: Day 2

• Take a stroll on the Duluth Lakewalk and enjoy the shops in Canal Park
• Drive over the Aerial Lift Bridge and spend a couple of hours at Park Point .
• Have lunch and a beer at Canal Park Brewing Company .
• Visit the Great Lakes Aquarium .
• Visit Lake Superior Zoo .
• Stop for dinner at Duluth Grill or OMC Smokehouse .

Duluth Lakewalk

Wake up in the morning and have breakfast at your hotel located in Canal Park.

Grab a cup of coffee from Caribou Coffee and join the many other people that start off their morning by strolling along the beautiful lakefront.

Spend the entire morning enjoying Canal Park by way of its scenic Lakewalk.

One of the most popular trails in the state, it includes both a paved bike trail and a boarded walking path.

The Lakewalk is both stroller and pet-friendly too!

Next, purchase a 1-hour rental from Wheel Fun rentals !

Whether it’s a 3 – 6 person surrey, deuce coup, quad sport, kids bike, or cruiser, everyone in the family can find the right vehicle.

Swim at Park Point

After lunch, drive across the Aerial Life Bridge and visit Park Point, Duluth’s only sandy beach and the world’s largest freshwater sandbar.

With an average temperature of 40 degrees Fahrenheit, Lake Superior is not our favorite swimming hole.

A short trip across the Aerial Life Bridge, however, and you can stop at this iconic beach, find places to skip stones, and dip your feet into the chilly Great Lake!

Time spent: 1 hour

Finally, finish off the day by visiting one, or both, of these animal-related experiences.

Great Lakes Aquarium

A popular Duluth attraction, The Great Lakes Aquarium is unique in that it features freshwater animals and habitats.

There are more than 200 different species of amphibians, birds, fish, mammals, and reptiles at this gigantic indoor aquarium.

Lake Superior Zoo

Lake Superior Zoo located in Duluth, MN is one of our favorite zoos in Minnesota !

Located 7 miles from Canal Park, Lake Superior Zoo is an indoor/outdoor zoo with animal exhibits and feedings, as well as education programs.

The region’s only zoo, this 16-acre attraction houses an African Lion, tigers, kangaroos, deer, and nocturnal animals.

There is a lot of walking required at this zoo, but the wide variety of animals makes it well worth your time.

Where to Eat and Drink in Duluth, MN: Day 2

After you’ve strolled the Lakewalk, be sure to stop for lunch and a beverage at Canal Park Brewing Company.

This is another must-do for us and has become something that we look forward to every time we visit Duluth!

With plenty of indoor and outdoor seating, a patio with fire pits and corn hole, its laid-back atmosphere could find you here for hours!

Craft beer, cheese curds, and Lake Superior in the background…. yes, please !

On your way out of town, stop for dinner at Trip Advisor’s #1 ranked restaurant in Duluth, Duluth Grill .

Known for serving the highest level of comfort food, Duluth Grill has been featured on Food Network’s Diners and Drive-Ins.

It is a favorite for both tourists and locals alike!

Rain Option: Day 2

If you are in need of an indoor activity, venture outside of Canal Park and tour Glensheen Mansion, The Historic Congdon Estate.

This awesome tour takes you inside the 39-room, 32,000-square-foot mansion built in 1905.

All of the original furniture, photographs, dinnerware, and bedding have been preserved to make you feel just as if you are stepping back in time.

Duluth Family Vacation: Day 3

• Spend the entire day driving up North Shore Scenic Drive to Grand Marais, and then back to Duluth.

North Shore Scenic Drive

Featuring a plethora of rushing waterfalls, scenic hiking trails, state parks, and epic views of Lake Superior, the pristine beauty of the Minnesota North Shore cannot be missed.

Duluth Family Vacation: If you have more time

If you’re looking for an outdoor winter adventure, Spirit Mountain is a premier ski and snowboard resort located in Duluth.

There are over 22 downhill runs that all offer epic views of Lake Superior from their summit.

Spirit Mountain also has snow tubing and downhill fat-tire biking.

In the summer months, the Spirit Mountain ski area transforms into Spirit Mountain Adventure Park !

Here, you’ll find kid-friendly attractions such as alpine slides, mini-golf, zip-lining, and scenic chair-lift rides.

Summer at Spirit Mountain also offers camping, hiking, and mountain biking.

We absolutely love visiting Spirit Mountain Adventure Park during the warm, summer months.

Where to Stay in Duluth: Duluth Hotels

In order to maximize your Duluth 3-day itinerary, I highly recommend that you stay in a hotel that is located within Canal Park.

Although there are other options on where to stay in Duluth with kids, the convenience of staying within Canal Park is unbeatable as you’re within walking distance of all of the most popular attractions.

Your final selection of Canal Park Duluth hotels will be based on availability, however.

Hotels in Canal Park book up extremely fast during the summer months, as well as in the winter when Duluth hosts their free Bentleyville “Tour of Lights”.

And finally, though it is not located in Canal Park, Edgewater Hotel & Waterpark in Duluth is home to one of Minnesota’s best indoor waterparks !

I, personally, am not a huge fan of the accommodations, but families with small children definitely enjoy the convenience of the onsite waterpark, called Edge.

Edge is open to both hotel guests and the general public when purchasing a day pass if you’d simply like to head there to swim and play for the day.

Thank you Jen for sharing your itinerary. If you are not staying at a hotel within Canal Park, are there accessible parking areas (even free parking spots) that visitors can use when touring the area for the day?

You are so welcome! Yes, there is a large parking lot in the center of Canal Park, it does cost money however. I am not sure of any free parking within walking distance to Canal Park. Have a great time!

Awesome! We are hopefully going up for a week in July, and this will be perfect for our first two days up there! What time does your family usually get up and moving on vacation? Is it worth waking up early and hearing all the whining? lol

Hi! You guys will love Duluth! When we travel nearby, we do not leave super early. We just get up at a normal time and go from there. If you’re trying to fit a lot in, however, you may need to ensue the early morning whining 🙂 HAVE FUN in Duluth!
