Pory of Leith Distillery For a Unique Take

Port of Leith Distillery (11 Whisky Quay) is the UK’s first vertical distillery located in the lively neighbourhood of Leith , which can be reached by foot, bus, and tram.

Leith is steeped in whisky heritage, dating back to 1822 when it received one of only six licences to store whisky.

Today, visitors can join this 1.5-hour tour , which includes visiting the copper stills on the ground floor, a tasting session, and the opportunity to fill your own 10ml bottle of the Port of Leith Distillery spirit.

Whisky Experiences in Edinburgh

The scotch whisky experience – the city’s first whisky attraction.

The original whisky museum operating since 1988, The Scotch Whisky Experience (354 Castlehill), knows how to educate while entertaining visitors on the Royal Mile.

There are two tour options.

The 50-minute tour is ideal for those looking for a quick introduction to the nation’s drink and features a guided tour with one dram.

The 75-minute tour provides the same tour but with four single-malt whiskies.

The tour includes a ride in a barrel, beautifully shot movies with footage from the five whisky-producing regions, a lesson in the Blenders’ Sample Room, and the cherry on top is a walk through one of the world’s largest collections of Scotch whisky, which has nearly 3,500 individual bottles.

Tour guests also receive a crystal glass to take home; we still use ours!

Johnnie Walker Princes Street For a Multi-Sensory Tour

Even as a non-whisky drinker, I thoroughly enjoyed this 1.5-hour tour in Edinburgh’s West End .

Johnnie Walker Princes Street (145 Princes St) offers a super modern experience starting with a taste test and a narrated story featuring Walker.

A professional and passionate guide then introduces the different stages of the Johnnie Walker whisky process, which is spread out over several diverse rooms, two of which give plenty of scope for trying neat whisky or highball cocktails; the latter was my preference.

If you have time, reserve a table at the rooftop bar, which also has an outside patio with views over Princes Street and Edinburgh Castle.

After doing this tour ourselves, we have purchased gift vouchers for multiple family members, again not all of whom are huge whisky fans.

Whisky Tasting in Edinburgh

Royal mile whisky tasting in a pub.

If the sound of a distillery tour sounds too daunting and an experience is a little bit too much effort, consider this 2-hour session that marries Scottish storytelling with single malt tasting in one location.

The event takes place in the upper level of a coffee/whisky specialist cafe, so the group has a private space to try their hand at sampling four whiskies and taking notes about each dram.

This is one of the best whisky-tasting tours in Edinburgh for couples and groups where some members don’t enjoy whisky, as they can request alternatives or non-alcoholic beverages.

A whisky walking tour of Edinburgh

Walking is great for both your physical and mental well-being. In the past few years we’ve seen a rise in the amount of people heading out for a stroll around their local areas, so we thought, why not make some of those walks a little bit more interesting and add a whisky twist to them! We’ve come up with just a few ‘whisky-related’ sites in Edinburgh that are worth a wee wander round!

View of Edinburgh from Braid Hills.

The Caledonian Distillery

Photo – Google Maps Streetview

Located next to Haymarket Station, you can walk around the grounds of the old Caledonian Distillery and enjoy the typical distillery architecture that can still be seen.

The Caledonian Distillery was built in 1855 during a boom in new grain distillery builds. As a result of this rapid growth in grain distilleries, there was an over-supply of grain whisky, leading to the 6 largest grain distillers teaming up in 1856 to divide the market among themselves. Within 1 year of opening, the Caledonian Distillery received a whopping 41.5% of the market! The distillery was also known for having the largest Coffey still in all of Europe. After changing hands multiple times throughout the years, the distillery doors were finally shut in 1988 after over 100 years of whisky producing.

The distillery was cleaned out, parts were demolished, and the site was turned into housing. There are still many aspects of the original distillery to be seen if you have a wander around – the most obvious being the 300 ft chimney stack, which is one of the tallest Victorian towers to remain in Scotland.

Dean Distillery

Dean Distillery

The site on which the Dean Distillery was once located is one of the most loved and picturesque areas of Edinburgh. As part of the Water of Leith walkway, this is a fantastic place to take a break and soak in some whisky history!

In 1881, James Johnstone set up the Dean Distillery in a converted flour mill, in the shadow of the Dean bridge. Sitting on the edge of the Water of Leith, the distillery was known for producing top-class whisky, however it was far smaller than many other distilleries, only producing around 73,000 gallons of whisky annually. Most of this whisky was sent south and consumed in northern England. After a short while, the distillery was shut in 1922.

Take a walk through Dean Village and under the Dean bridge and look out for any of the buildings having a familiar ‘distillery’ style to them!

North British Distillery

North British Distillery

Located right next to the Tynecastle Stadium, home of the Heart of Midlothian FC – why not take a nice wee cultural wander, taking in the world of Scotch whisky and the world of Scottish football!

Along with Caledonian Distillery, the North British Distillery was one of the six dedicated grain distilleries in Scotland. Founded in 1885 by Andrew Usher, William Sanderson, James Watson and John Crabbie, the distillery was built in an attempt to challenge the monopoly the Distillers Company Ltd. had over the grain supplies. In 1887 the distillery began producing its whisky from a single Coffey still, however in just under three short years, the distillery was creating double, producing three million gallons per year! North British Distillery is still a fully functioning distillery to this day.

Why not go for a grain distillery walking tour through history and visit both the North British Distillery and the remains of the Caledonian Distillery in the same day – they’re only a 20 minute walk away from each other!

Pattison Street

Pattison Street

Moving away from distilleries and to the other side of Edinburgh, we’re heading to Leith, where we will find Pattison Street – a street with a wealth of whisky history.

Pattison Street can be found in the heart of Leith, an area of Edinburgh that was once home to a booming whisky industry servicing blending, bottling and shipping from the port. One particular Victorian building, now home to  Georgian Antiques , was once a purpose-built bonded warehouse – basically a massive whisky barrel storage space! It was here that the infamous Pattison brothers trained 500 parrots to say “Buy Pattisons’ Whisky!”. For decades Abbot’s Choice was matured here, until the warehouse was closed in 1985.

Leith has a wealth of whisky history to it, there is so much more than just Pattison Street – why not learn some more by taking a walking tour on the  Leith Whisky Trail !

The Pear Tree Bar

The Pear Tree

Taking a stroll in The Meadows? Did you know that close by there is a building with a lot of history relating to one of the biggest names in the world of Scotch whisky?  The Pear Tree  is situated just a short walk away and has quite a story!

Originally called, West Nicolson House, this building was, in 1826, the birthplace of ‘the father of blending’ himself – Andrew Usher Jnr. Further to making his fortune in whisky and being the one of the first to popularize blended whiskies, Usher was also a prominent citizen of the city of Edinburgh. In his later years he became a well-known public benefactor and philanthropist. In 1896, Usher gifted the city of Edinburgh £100,000 to build a substantial civic hall for the city. This building, located on Lothian Road, was named the Usher Hall and is now a live music and arts venue to some big names in the industry! It is said that the dome of the Usher Hall is in fact modeled on the dome found on the upper level of the Pear Tree House!

The Pear Tree is now a pub with a fantastic beer garden, so once the guidelines are in place – take a stroll along the meadows and stop off at The Pear Tree for a nice refreshing beverage!

So there we have it, a few wee places to wander to around Edinburgh, each with a bit of whisky history! What are your favourite whisky-related locations in Edinburgh? Let us know in the comments below!

Keep safe, and  slàinte mhath !

13 Taylor Swift Inspired Trips In & Around Edinburgh

Taylor Swift has described Scotland as ‘a really special place for me’.

‘My dad is super proud of our Scottish heritage, he told me that pretty much most of our family can be traced back to Scotland, so of course it’s obviously very cool for me to get to perform there as part of the tour.’

Speaking to the press last year she even said she would ‘love to have a vacation in a castle for a couple of nights’ adding it would be the ‘perfect way to end my tour.’

Are you going to the Taylor Swift Edinburgh gig this summer? Even if you didn’t manage to get tickets, here are some specially tailored ideas for an exciting Scottish holiday in Edinburgh and beyond.

Taylor Swift's 2008 song ' Love Story ' became the first song ever to reach number 1 in both the pop and country music charts in the US. She’s obviously a romantic so maybe she would enjoy the ‘most romantic hotel in the UK’? Located in Edinburgh’s Old Town, The Witchery is a top spot for a candlelit dinner. This part of Edinburgh will surprise you at every turn with its beautiful buildings and magical views. You could also watch the sunset over on Calton Hill or take a romantic stroll along Portobello Beach.

‘ Karma is a cat, purring in my lap 'cause it loves me, flexing like a goddam acrobat …' Taylor has three cats – she loves them! You might not know that two of her beloved cats are Scottish Folds! We think she would love Maison de Moggy, Scotland’s first cat café. A cosy, homely café experience where customers can relax in feline company whilst enjoying the purr-fect cuppa. Not a cat person? No problem - Edinburgh is a coffee mecca, so you won’t be short of choices for your morning pick-me-up.

The Royal Botanic Garden

With the numerous references to colours in Taylor’s music – each era of course has a different colour – we think Edinburgh’s parks and gardens would be right up her street. Lavender, purple pink, all the shades of red, never seen that colour blue ... from Princes Street Gardens to Lauriston Castle Gardens, Edinburgh is famous for its green spaces. Just one mile from the city centre, the Royal Botanic Garden will show you colours you can't see anywhere else!

Some top recommendations include Panda & Sons, Devil’s Advocate and Johnnie Walker Princes Street. But as you might expect there are plenty of places to try Scotland’s national drink in the capital. Hungry? Edinburgh is also a great culinary destination with some exciting venues such as Edinburgh Street Food.

‘ Once upon a time, the planets and the fates and all the stars aligned… ’ This is one of many references to stars and planets in Taylor’s music. For our final Taylor Swift trip suggestion why not head out for a bit of stargazing in Scotland? If time allows, travel south west to Dumfries & Galloway where you’ll find some of the clearest night skies in Europe. This would be a perfect way to end your Scottish holiday!
