Review by Alex Rose ★★

There is the germ of a great idea lurking behind Ego Trip. But unfortunately, first-time feature filmmaker Benoit Pelletier and screenwriter François Avard aren’t able to transform that intriguing notion into anything resembling a great film.

As Avard — one of Quebec’s top comic writers — has told everyone, it all started when he visited Haiti a few years back, nearing burnout, and had trouble relating to what he saw in the troubled country.
You could imagine a brilliant satire of navel-gazing North Americans lost and delirious in a developing nation and, at points, Ego Trip contains elements of that satire. But it just doesn’t click. Yes, it spoofs the self-serving celebrity culture that uses poor exotic locales like Haiti to rebrand fading stars — hello, Bono — yet the satire doesn’t cut deep enough. The real issue, however, is the lack of laughs along the way.
Marc Morin (Patrick Huard) is a miserable creature. He’s a Québécois talk-show host whose career is going south fast. The network did a survey, and people said they just didn’t like Morin much. We don’t either.
He’s not a nice guy. He’s getting angrier and angrier with his self-destructing hosting gig, and he’s not any happier off-camera. He can’t even say ‘I love you’ to his dying father, nor can he show any real affection to his wife, Josée (Sandrine Bisson), and kids.
That’s when his agent, Paul Plante (Antoine Bertrand), comes up with the smart idea of sending him down to Haiti on a humanitarian mission. To save the world? Not exactly.
“You have to rethink your branding,” says Plante.
Well, of course he does — who doesn’t have to rethink their branding at some point? — and after getting over his reluctance, he’s on the next plane to Port-au-Prince. At first he’s no happier there, frustrated by his rundown hotel and not too thrilled with the people he’s hanging with, notably a seasoned photographer (Guy Jodoin), a cynical aid worker (Marie-Ève Milot) and an irritating would-be rapper (Gardy Fury).
Arguably the biggest issue here is there’s really no one for us to identify with. It’s giving nothing away to say that Morin will finally go through some kind of personal redemption and see the error of his ways, but it’s too little too late. The guy’s simply a horrible person you wouldn’t want to spend two minutes with.
Huard does his best to give Morin a little humanity, but he doesn’t have anything like the charm he did in, say, Starbuck. The other actors aren’t given much to work with. Bisson, who’s usually great, is a perfect example. Her character is so undeveloped that all we know about her is that she’s the long-suffering wife.
Like so many other films and novels, all of the folks who actually live in the exotic locale where the action takes place are little more than window dressing. And that is not cool at all.
