Expanded into a book, Enrique's Journey became a national bestseller, won two book awards, and is required reading for all incoming freshmen at 21 universities and dozens of high schools nationwide. It has been selected as a "One City, One Book" read by five cities, and is being made into a movie by Lifetime.

In 1998, Nazario was a Pulitzer Prize finalist for a series on children of drug addicted parents. And in 1994, she won a George Polk Award for Local Reporting for a series about hunger among schoolchildren in California.

She is a graduate of Williams College and has a master's degree in Latin American studies from the University of California, Berkeley. Enrique’s Journey

Reviewed by: lila quintero weaver.

Original (adult) version also available – Enrique’s Journey: The Story of a Boy’s Dangerous Odyssey to Reunite with His Mother

The best creative non-fiction takes you straight down into the messy, contradictory, gut-wrenching heart of a subject, and awakens your appreciation for its complexity. By every measure, Enrique’s Journey is such a book. It’s the riveting epic of a Honduran teenager driven to escape intolerable conditions and fueled by the hope of crossing the border into the United States. The original version was published in 2007 as adult nonfiction. This edition, adapted for readers as young as the seventh grade, was released in 2013. It also updates the story. (Young-reader adaptations are a growing trend in nonfiction publishing.)

As Enrique launches his eighth attempt to reach the United States by means of train hopping, the risks are clearer than ever to him: death, dismemberment, robbery, extortion, and sexual victimization. But the way he sees it, staying in Honduras presents its own bleak and terrifying future. Gangs and violence are rampant, poverty is entrenched, and opportunities for work and self-betterment are virtually nonexistent. Worst of all, Enrique’s mother, Lourdes, has been absent from his life for an achingly long time. A single mother with no dependable means of support, she left for the United States when Enrique was five, entrusting her two children into the care of relatives. Enrique’s sister has weathered the eleven-year separation reasonably well, but it takes a heavy toll on the young boy. During his teen years in Honduras, he spirals down into serious drug use and antisocial behavior. As his life grows ever more troubled, Enrique imagines that reuniting with his mother will repair the hole in his heart.  Continue reading .

Enrique’s Journey

Publisher's Synopsis: Adapted for young people, this edition of Enrique's Journey is written by Sonia Nazario and based on the adult book of the same name. It is the true story of Enrique, a teenager from Honduras, who sets out on a journey, braving hardship and peril, to find his mother, who had no choice but to leave him when he was a child and go to the United States in search of work. Enrique's story will bring to light the daily struggles of migrants, legal and otherwise, and the complicated choices they face simply trying to survive and provide for the basic needs of their families. The issues seamlessly interwoven into this gripping nonfiction work for young people are perfect for common core discussion. Includes an 8-page photo insert, as well as an epilogue that describes what has happened to Enrique and his family since the adult edition was published.   "A heartwrenching account. Provides a human face, both beautiful and scarred, for the undocumented. A must read."-- Kirkus Reviews , Starred "Nazario's straightforward . . . journalistic writing style largely serves the complex, sprawling story effectively. A valuable addition to young adult collections."-- School Library Journal   "This powerfully written survival story personalizes the complicated, pervasive, and heart-wrenching debates about immigration and immigrants' rights and will certainly spark discussion in the classroom and at home."-- Booklist An NCSS-CBC Notable Social Studies Trade Book for Young People   A Kirkus Reviews Best Teen Book of the Year A Junior Library Guild Selection

13 new movies and shows to watch this weekend on Netflix, Max and more (May 3-5)

'Hacks,' 'The Veil' and 'Unfrosted' lead the weekend watch list

Elisabeth Moss looks over her shoulder in The Veil

May is already off to a very good start when it comes to streaming, thanks to the bounty of new movies and shows to watch this weekend on Netflix , Max and other top streaming services .

The weekend lineup boasts the return of several fan-favorite shows, including the third seasons of "Hacks," "Welcome to Wrexham" and "Selling the OC" season 3. And make room in your queue for new series including the espionage thriller "The Veil" and the corporate drama "A Man in Full." Comedy is out in full force this weekend with live John Mulaney specials.

On the movie side, there's something for everybody, like the romantic comedy " The Idea of You" and the breakfast pastry origin story "Unfrosted." Here's our guide on what to watch this weekend.

‘Hacks’ season 3 (Max)

The second season of the acclaimed comedy went out on such a high — with Deborah (Jean Smart) releasing her successful stand-up special and “firing” Ava (Hannah Einbinder) so the writer could pursue other gigs — that I would’ve felt at peace with it as a series finale. But thankfully, the “Hacks” team wasn’t content to rest on their laurels and are returning with even sharper and funnier new material. A year after parting, Deborah and Ava run into each other again at a comedy festival. Deborah is at the peak of her career and Ava is doing well for herself as a TV writer. But when a tantalizing new opportunity brings them back together, they rediscover the magic they can create.

‘The Veil’ (Hulu)

Elisabeth Moss headlines this spy thriller from “Peaky Blinders” creator Steven Knight, in which she plays an MI6 agent with a troubled past who is given a difficult new assignment. It’s not unlike Moss’s excellent “Top of the Lake,” but on an international scale. Imogen Salter is tasked with extracting a woman named Adilah El Idrissi (Yumna Marwan) from a refugee camp on the Syrian/Turkish border and discover her secrets. Is Adilah who she says she is or actually a high-level ISIS operative planning a new terrorist plot on par with Sept. 11. As they journey from Istanbul to London, the two women play a game of truth and lies with the highest and most dangerous of stakes.

‘A Man in Full’ (Netflix)

This “eat the rich” limited series boasts some impressive bonafides: based on a novel by Tom Wolfe created by David E. Kelley, directed by Regina King and Thomas Schlamme, starring Jeff Daniels, Diane Lane and Lucy Liu. Daniels plays Charlie Croker, an ex- football star and real estate mogul in Atlanta who is facing financial ruin when the bank threatens to call in his loans totaling nearly a billion dollars. Croker turns to his chief legal counsel Roger White (Aml Ameen) for aid, but Roger has other matters on his plate — like digging up dirt for the mayor (William Jackson Harper) on his political rivals.

‘Welcome to Wrexham’ season 3 (FX)

After 15 long and disappointing seasons in the National League, Wrexham AFC finally earned promotion back into the English Football League. But this is no time to rest on their laurels. The stakes have only gotten higher for the team, owners Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds, and the dedicated supporters. Yet, all of their hard work may unravel due to injuries and setbacks. Meanwhile, the women’s team is looking to dominate after an undefeated season that resulted in their own promotion.

Streaming now on Hulu New episodes air Thursdays on FX (via Sling or Fubo )

‘My Next Guest With David Letterman and John Mulaney’ (Netflix)

David Letterman’s interview show returns with a one-off episode featuring John Mulaney. While visiting the latter’s Chicago high school, Letterman and Mulaney discuss a wide range of topics, including fatherhood, addiction and stand-up comedy. This is the first “My Next Guest” since December 2022, when Letterman talked with Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The special comes in advance of Mulaney’s six-episode live variety series, scheduled to air on Netflix later this week (see below).

Premieres Tuesday, April 30 at 3 a.m. ET on Netflix

‘John Mulaney Presents: Everybody’s In L.A’ (Netflix)

The title of Mulaney's six-episode live-streamed variety series is no joke — everybody in comedy is in it (also in Jerry Seinfeld's new Netflix movie "Unfrosted"; scroll down for more info). The installments kick off on May 4 at the Hollywood Bowl and then stream nightly from May 6 through May 10. Mulaney will welcome comedic luminaries Seinfeld, David Letterman, Sarah Silverman, Nate Bargatze, Hannah Gadsby, Patton Oswalt, Ronny Chieng, Tom Segura and Bill Hader, as well as special guests including Flea, Beck, Weezer and St. Vincent.

Streams Friday, May 3 at 10 p.m. ET on Netflix

‘Shardlake’ (Hulu)

This Tudor-period whodunnit adventure is based on the historical mystery novels by C. J. Sansom, set during the reign of Henry VIII in the 16th century. As monasteries are dissolved across the land, lawyer Matthew Shardlake (Arthur Hughes) is sent by Thomas Cromwell (Sean Bean) to investigate the murder of a commissioner at a priory in the remote town of Scarnsea. With Cromwell’s own political survival on the line, Shardlake and his companion Jack Barak (Anthony Boyle) must solve the murder and close the monastery — failure is not an option.

‘Acapulco’ season 3 (Apple TV Plus)

Eugenio Derbez’s bilingual, bi-timeline comedy is back with more adventures for the older Maximo (Derbez) and his younger self (Enrique Arrizon). In the present day, Maximo finds himself revisiting a Las Colinas he no longer recognizes. In 1985, young Maximo continues to climb the ladder of success, though his rise threatens the relationships he’s worked so hard to build. For both, it’s time to reconcile past mistakes and undertake exciting new beginnings.

‘Selling the OC’ season 3 (Netflix)

There’s plenty of sun, shade and side eye in a fresh installment of the real estate reality series. The “Selling Sunset” spinoff returns with more listings and drama for the agents at the Oppenheim Group. The romance brewing between Alex Hall and Tyler Stanaland might blow up before it even really gets started. Sean Palmieri finds himself feuding with several of his colleagues. And new agent Alexandra Harper is also feeling the heat, but not in a good way as her ability to sell comes under question.

‘Unfrosted’ (Netflix)

Jerry Seinfeld makes his directorial debut with this comedy loosely based on the true story of the invention of Pop-Tarts, the famous toaster pastries found in households across America. In 1963 Michigan, cereal rivals Kellogg’s and Post engage in a breakneck race to create a pastry that will change the face of breakfast forever. It’s a tale of ambition, betrayal, sugar, and menacing milkmen. Seinfeld also stars in the film, joined by a veritable who’s who of comedy, including Melissa McCarthy, Amy Schumer, Jim Gaffigan and Bill Burr, as well as Hugh Grant and Peter Dinklage.

‘The Idea of You’ (Prime Video)

This romantic comedy based on Robinne Lee’s novel of the same name flips around the usual age difference between the male and female lead. This time, Anne Hathaway’s character is older and Nicholas Galitzine’s love interest is younger. Solène is a 40-year-old single mom who chaperones her teen daughter on a trip to the Coachella music festival. There, she happens to meet 24-year-old Hayes Campbell (Nicholas Galitzine), the lead singer of the hottest boy band on the planet. Sparks fly and they begin a whirlwind romance, but Hayes’ fame proves to be a challenge and Solène discovers the difficulties of life in the spotlight.

‘Turtles All the Way Down’ (Max)

“The Fault in Our Stars” author John Green’s novel moves to the screen in this romantic drama starring Isabela Merced as 17-year-old Aza, who has obsessive-compulsive disorder. She tries to balance home life, friendships and school while navigating an endless barrage of invasive thoughts she can’t control. When Aza reconnects with childhood crush Davis (Felix Mallard), these thoughts multiply and grow louder, as she ponders her potential for love and relationships.

‘Stop Making Sense’ (Max)

The 4K restoration of one of the greatest concert movies of all time hit theaters last fall and now comes to streaming. The 1984 film was directed by Jonathan Demme and shot over four nights at Hollywood’s Pantages Theatre during the Talking Heads tour for the album “Speaking in Tongues.” The concert begins with frontman David Byrne on stage by himself, then proceeds with the arrivals of bassist Tina Weymouth, drummer Chris Frantz, keyboardist/guitarist Jerry Harrison and other contributors. The performances include the band’s early single "Psycho Killer" (1977) and their most recent hit at the time, “Burning Down the House” (1983).

'The Contestant' Review: Documentary Is Like Watching 'Black Mirror' in Real Life

The film examines a bizarre Japanese television program that saw its participant, Nasubi, naked and living solely off mail-in magazine prizes.

The Big Picture

  • The Contestant is a harrowing exploration of a bizarre Japanese reality show that feels more like a horror movie.
  • The documentary humanizes protagonist Nasubi with a tone that is haunting yet hopeful.
  • The film glosses over pivotal years in Nasubi's life and the broader impact of reality TV shows.

Can you draw a straight line between a Japanese reality show from 1998 in which a naked man attempts to live solely off of magazine sweepstakes prizes and your young nephew watching a Mr. Beast YouTube video where the ultra-popular creator spends a week buried alive ? The Contestant makes a strong case for it. It's s a compelling documentary in the way that true crime podcasts or car crashes are. You know you’re witnessing something awful, but you simply can’t look away.

The Contestant

What is 'the contestant' about.

Before Big Brother , Fear Factor , and even The Truman Show , there was Susunu! Denpa Shōnen , a popular early Japanese reality show that cast relatively unknown comedians to complete wild mystery tasks . It was a real starmaker, having the power to catapult its participants to fame overnight. However, no situation was more outlandish than a segment called “A Life in Prizes,” and no contestant got more attention than Nasubi.

It all started with an audition of sorts, with a man named Nasubi being selected by random draw. He feels like he’s won the lottery, but with the knowledge of what’s coming next, it feels more akin to being reaped to participate in The Hunger Games . After being chosen, Nasubi is blindfolded and driven to a small, bare apartment, where he must strip naked and start applying for mail-in magazine sweepstakes . The only way he’ll be able to get food, clothes, entertainment, anything is by winning these prizes. And the challenge only ends once he’s racked up the equivalent of one million yen’s worth.

To make matters even more complicated, Nasubi isn’t aware the endeavor is being televised. While he knows he’s being filmed, powerful producer Tsuchiya has lied and told him that most of the footage will not be aired — something he is grateful for, considering he promised his family he wouldn’t go nude. Thus begins Nasubi’s year of isolation, starvation, and depression while — unbeknownst to him — the world tunes in weekly to laugh.

'The Contestant' Is the Scariest Horror Movie of the Year

The Contestant is a documentary about a reality show, but it’s so bizarre and dark that it feels more like a horror movie or an episode ripped from the dystopian sci-fi series Black Mirror . There’s even a pretty clear-cut protagonist and antagonist. The former is Nasubi, a comedian from a traditional family in Fukushima. While many people cared about watching him endure the challenge when the show was airing, director Clair Titley does an excellent job of making us care about Nasubi as a person through powerful sit-down interviews with him. It’s impossible not to feel for him right away as he recounts being bullied at school, even getting his stage name from the taunts. (“Nasubi” means “eggplant” in Japanese — a title he was teased with due to his long face.) Because he had to move around a lot and struggled to make friends, he recalls entertaining people as a means of protecting himself. When he grew up, he ambitiously headed to Tokyo to try and get his big break despite not having any connections. To put it bluntly, he was vulnerable and a prime target for exploitation.

And that’s exactly what TV producer Tsuchiya did. Tsuchiya is the antagonist of the story — and a self-proclaimed one at that , gleefully recalling the fact that Darth Vader’s theme music used to play when he walked on screen. Titley also gets a detailed, candid interview from him, which she sometimes juxtaposes with Nasubi’s, so it’s like they’re in conversation with one another — an interesting and effective narrative technique.

Nasubi claims that Tsuchiya went from a god to a devil in his mind throughout the process, though Tsuchiya views himself more as a mad scientist . He has a producer’s brain, with some of his manipulation techniques familiar to anyone who used to watch Quinn and Rachel do it on UnREAL , but there’s a sociological curiosity to him, too. He doesn’t just want to make good TV — he wants to see what humanity will do when pushed to extremes like in the Milgram or Stanford Prison Experiments . He genuinely believes that all humans are fascinating and wants to prove that, though, unfortunately, his obsession trumps his compassion. One particularly chilling moment comes when Nasubi remembers how Tsuchiya was smiling when he was telling him to strip. He couldn’t wait to see what would happen but gave no thought to Nasubi’s embarrassment or fear.

'The Contestant' Is a Bright, Brutal Journey

And it only goes downhill from there. Hearing the audience laugh when Nasubi is struggling is haunting , and seeing the silly, colorful graphics pop up on the screen with the footage is equally harrowing. Nasubi comes off as a genuinely kind man from the get-go, something that’s cemented once the film gets into all the good he’s done with his fame since being on the show, which makes what he endures in the name of entertainment feel even more cruel. He starts off with a positive attitude for the first few weeks of the experiment, but as time goes on, he grows more negative and depressed. Though they give him measly servings of crackers to live on before he wins any food, it isn't enough sustenance. And once he starts winning edible items — even if it is nothing more than fiber jelly, rice without any proper way to cook it, or even dog food — that’s what he has to resort to.

“I felt robbed of my strength, both physically and mentally,” Nasubi recounts, citing hair loss, body aches, an inability to sleep, and intense feelings of isolation and loneliness. He even considers suicide, as death feels like the only way out. It might seem absurd with the facts alone — after all, the door to the outside world isn't locked; technically, he could leave at any time — but there are twisted psychological games at play. Just as cult documentaries often help us understand and empathize with those victims, so too does The Contestant , putting us in Nasubi’s headspace.

Titley paces the documentary well, as “Life in Prizes” ends at almost exactly the halfway mark, leaving us wondering where we go from here — something Nasubi was in the dark about as well. The reveal that the journey is far from over feels like a punch to the gut, and there’s a sick feeling you get once Nasubi finds himself in a hellish Groundhog Day of sorts just days after finding victory. “After raising him up, we dropped him right back to rock bottom,” Tsuchiya says, clearly still proud of what he’s masterminded. By the time Nasubi is taken to a third location and immediately starts stripping without being told, it’s clear there’s been severe conditioning — a complete breaking of the spirit. Frankly, it feels wrong to witness. How could people sit by and not only watch this happen but revel in it?

'The Contestant' Only Scratches the Surface of Its Consequences

But don’t modern audiences do the same thing every day? Aren’t we all complicit in allowing this toxic culture to not only persist but evolve and thrive? The Dance Moms memes are fun, but the truth is, we’re watching minors be traumatized for our enjoyment. The Real Housewives are a blast to quote, but we’re often making a spectacle of alcoholism and mental health issues. Squid Game: The Challenge is one of Netflix’s most successful series, but at the end of the day, we’re watching people desperate for money become numbers, hoping to make a better life for themselves with the cash prize. There are a plethora of implications that naturally arise from The Contestant , and its main downfall is that it’s not interested in exploring them or tracking and connecting their impact to modern-day media.

The Contestant is thorough when it comes to exploring the timeframe of the show and immediately after, but there are holes. There’s about a decade that’s practically skipped over, from the show’s end in 2002 to the Fukushima earthquake in 2011. Nasubi has to go to the doctor, but we never find out whether there were any specific health issues. His diaries are made into several books and became bestsellers, but we don’t know if Nasubi got any of those profits. In fact, we’re not even sure if he saw a penny from the show itself, as it’s stated he never signed a contract.

The Contestant is riveting, but it stops short of the type of analysis that would take it to the next level. It starts a conversation about this particular situation, but it doesn’t quite spark a dialogue about the bigger issues at hand in terms of reality TV and the murky ethics of making and consuming it. Although perhaps unfair to ask that of a film like this, as that’s a subject that would easily take entire seasons of television to cover well.

Though a rather bleak and heavy watch, The Contestant does end on a surprisingly hopeful note. The thesis the film goes with — that humans can’t exist alone — may feel overly simplistic for all of the complex moral quandaries it raises, but it’s still a sweet sentiment. And the fact that gratitude for his support system is what Nasubi chooses to take away from the experience is heartwarming. After all, at the end of the day, family and friends are life’s real prizes.

'The Contestant' is a harrowing and humanizing exploration of a bizarre Japanese TV program

  • The pacing is clever and effective.
  • We get to intimately know and empathize with Nasubi.
  • The tone is effectively haunting yet leaves room for hope.
  • A few crucial years in Nasubi's life feel glossed-over.
  • The film doesn't dive into this program's larger impact on the reality genre.

The Contestant is now available to stream on Hulu in the U.S.

Movies That Follow The Hero's Journey, Ranked By How Well They Use The Monomyth

Movies That Follow The Hero's Journey, Ranked By How Well They Use The Monomyth

Sergio Pereira

Vote up the movies that most effectively use the hero's journey.

While there are always exceptions, nearly every film relies on some kind of narrative structure. In its most simplistic form, this structure has a beginning, middle, and end. There are problems and solutions. The main character changes and grows. Viewers are inherently familiar with these elements, but may not be aware of their inner workings.

One of the most widely-used storytelling methods is the monomyth - better known as the hero's journey - which was described and codified by writer Joseph Campbell. There are 17 stages to this narrative pattern that can be split across three acts: Departure, Initiation, and Return. In a nutshell, a hero's journey movie sees the protagonist embark on an adventure or quest. Along the way, they face obstacles that make them question themselves and their purpose. Even though they inevitably hit rock bottom, the hero perseveres and grows into a new person in the end.

While Campbell's full structure includes 17 stages, let's quickly break down the 7 main ingredients:

The Ordinary World - The hero lives a familiar and simple life

Call to Adventure - The hero is presented with a challenge in the unknown world, but is reluctant

Crossing the Threshold - The hero decides to enter the unknown world to take on the challenge

Trials - While meeting mentors and helpers, the hero must overcome obstacles that lead to the main challenge

The Abyss - Setbacks accumulate and leave the hero with a sense of hopelessness

Atonement - Through reflection and aid from others, the hero regains their way

The Return - The hero resumes their quest, overcomes the main challenge (the climax), then returns to the familiar world as a changed person

With that basic understanding of how the monomyth works, take a look at the biggest movies that follow the hero's journey to storytelling success.

Netflix elevates women filmmakers, diversifies industry representation

From Postcards to Òlòtūré: The Journey and other female-led titles coming to the service.

Recommended articles.

The growing slate of female-led stories created by women filmmakers in Nigeria and sub-Saharan Africa indicate the significant transformation that has ensued in the local film industry, especially contributing to its increasing success and global attention.

Director and producer, Hamisha Daryani Ahuja's Postcards - which premieres on Netflix on 3 May - is one of the stories that promises a journey of love and self-discovery in India. Like her debut film, Namaste Wahala which was a cross-cultural success , her recent work is set in India and also explores the cross-cultural theme, but with an exciting twist capable of keeping viewers glued. The series will launch to a global audience of 270 Million paid members from over 190 countries, and feature Nigerian fan-favourite stars like; Sola Sobowale , Tobi Bakre , Richard Mofe-Damijo , Rahama Sadau, and Nancy Isime alongside Bollywood talent.

Female creators have made great strides in shaping the creative industry, from leading women filmmakers like; Mo Abudu to Kemi Adetiba, Bolanle Austen-Peters , and more, they have championed local stories – in front and behind the camera – pushing the film industry to global heights, while showcasing Nollywood’s growth in storytelling with their works.

The desire for these great stories from women filmmakers in Nigeria was apparent in the excitement after Netflix announced a diverse slate of upcoming female-led Nigerian stories coming on the service in 2024 and beyond.

From the gripping drama of Òlòtūré: The Journey to the exploration of human trafficking in Baby Farm both from Mo Abudu’s EbonyLife Productions, these narratives demonstrate a commitment to storytelling that pushes boundaries and sparks important conversations. The titles narrate an important theme which tells the hustle culture in Nigeria’s society.

Following the success of the 2020 prequel , the series Òlòtūré: The Journey to be released later in 2024 will dive deeper into the underworld of sex work and trafficking as the protagonist fights for her life. Addressing similar themes, the Baby Farm series is about a young pregnant woman who unknowingly entrusts her twins to a NGO and fights to escape the clutches of the ruthless doctors.

Bolanle Austen-Peters transports viewers to the 18th-century Oyo Empire with House of Ga'a , while Kemi Adetiba's To Kill a Monkey explores morality in the digital age, offering fresh perspectives on Nigerian society. Directed by the Queen of Nigerian theatre, House of Ga'a is based on true events surrounding a ferocious and feared Prime Minister/kingmaker who became more powerful than the kings he enthroned. The ancient biopic features a stellar cast including; Femi Branch , Mike Afolarin , Funke Akindele , Toyin Abraham , Ibrahim Chatta , Lateef Adedimeji , Femi Adebayo , and Gabriel Afolayan among others.

The trend of world class storytelling in local films and series reflects not just global attention to stories from Nigeria and Africa, but also impressive investments in the local film industry by streaming services like Netflix. In this case, Netflix stands out for its dedication to authentic storytelling and amplifying voices from around the world.

One of the notable aspects of Netflix's commitment is in its support for women storytellers at every level of production - from directors to writers, producers to actors. This support also includes celebrating the achievements and contributions of women around Nigeria and Africa who have been lending their voices in the film industry to tell stories that matter.

Netflix’s contribution promotes diversity on screen and behind the camera. For the streaming service, it is important that more people see their lives reflected on screen. As such, it ensures that films and series reflect the diversity of its global audience because great stories can come from anywhere and be loved everywhere. It is this belief that has set the stage for filmmakers and given them the opportunity to reach a global audience through captivating stories that showcase local culture.
