Features Largest Total Purses, Average Purse & Single-Event Prize in Tour History

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Feb. 8, 2022) – Less than two weeks after announcing Epson as the new title sponsor of the “Road to the LPGA,” today the Epson Tour unveiled its 2022 schedule featuring record-setting total purses and average purse size, as well as the largest single-event prize in Tour history.

The 21-tournament schedule will take the Epson Tour to 13 states and offer $4.41 million in total prize money, for an average purse size of $210,000. Both figures eclipse the previous all-time records for total prize money ($4 million) and average purse size ($194,000) set in 2019 and 2021, respectively. The season begins March 4-6 with the Florida’s Natural Charity Classic in Winter Haven, Fla., at the Country Club of Winter Haven.

“We’re grateful for tournament partners and host venues that continue to invest in Epson Tour athletes,” said Mike Nichols, the Chief Business Officer of LPGA Qualifying Tours. “Five years ago, fewer than 1 in 5 tournaments were playing for a $200,000 purse. Now this mark is the new minimum threshold for every event, opening new doors for all individuals chasing their dream of one day playing on the LPGA Tour.”

“To see the Epson Tour continue to elevate since I graduated in 2016 is great for the game of golf,” said Ally Ewing, the newest Player Director on the LPGA Board. “I earned just over $110,000 when purse sizes averaged roughly $139,000, so a 50% growth over such a short span is both encouraging and essential to creating a financially viable path for these future LPGA Tour members.”

Another monumental milestone on the 2022 Epson Tour schedule is the largest purse in Tour history of $335,000 belonging to the French Lick Resort Charity Championship contested on the Pete Dye Course at French Lick Resort, which has hosted the Epson Tour since 2017 and previously on its Donald Ross Course. The $50,000 winner’s check from the tournament will amount to more than the season earnings ($47,283) of P.K. Kongkraphan in 2013, the No. 1 player in the Race for the Card that year.

“French Lick Resort has enjoyed hosting the Epson Tour, and we are proud to lead the way in elevating this tournament and Tour in support of these aspiring LPGA Tour players,” said Dave Harner, Director of Golf at French Lick Resort.

The Epson Tour welcomes three new events to the family in 2022: one to be named at Ol’ Colony Golf Course in Tuscaloosa, Ala., the Wildhorse Ladies Classic at Wildhorse Golf Course in Pendleton, Ore., and Ann Arbor's Road to the LPGA powered by the A2 Sports Commission in Ann Arbor, Mich. at Travis Pointe Country Club, which hosted the LPGA Tour’s Volvik Championship from 2016-18. Additionally, the Carolina Golf Classic presented by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina will visit a new city for a third straight year when it stops at Kinston Country Club in Kinston, N.C. from June 8-12.

“We strive to bring new, first-class venues to the schedule, and that sometimes includes returning to top sites like Travis Pointe, which hosted the LPGA Tour for three years,” said Nichols.  “It is important that Epson Tour athletes compete on LPGA-caliber courses, so finding the best facilities for competition is a top priority when building our annual schedule.”

The 2022 season will conclude with the Epson Tour Championship from Oct. 6-9 in Daytona Beach, Fla., at LPGA International. The top 10 on the Race for the Card money list at the tournament’s completion will receive LPGA Tour membership for 2023 and the chance to serve as an Epson Tour Ambassador, a new program initiated by Epson upon the launch of their sponsorship. The 10 individuals will be offered $10,000 apiece to jumpstart their LPGA career and in turn, wear the Epson Tour logo on their sleeve.

“I thought it was incredible that a global brand like Epson was putting the money into the Tour, and not only just saying, ‘Here's some money. Now you're on the Tour, go on with your life.’ They are actually supporting us, supporting women's golf,” said Fatima Fernandez Cano, an Epson Tour graduate in 2020 and 2021, and the first representative of the Epson Tour Ambassador Program. “You graduate, you get the option for a sponsorship, that's huge for any of us. Somebody like me, I'm new to the Tour. There's many expenses, everything is new, and for them to support me not just through the Epson Tour but also on to the next level, that's just huge.”

FEATURED QUOTES FROM NEW TOURNAMENT HOSTS

Ann Arbor’s Road to the LPGA powered by the A2 Sports Commission in Ann Arbor, Michigan:

- Mike Malach, Executive Director of the A2 Sports Commission

Wildhorse Ladies Classic in Pendleton, Oregon:

“Wildhorse Resort & Casino and the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation are excited to showcase and welcome some of the most talented young professional golfers from around the world to our Tribal and local communities in the Northwest. More importantly, this event aligns with the Tribes’ efforts to provide meaningful opportunities for Tribal youth and grow the game in our region.”

- Gary E. George, CEO of Wildhorse Resort and Casino

Ol’ Colony Golf Course in Tuscaloosa, Alabama:

Epson tour unveils schedule: 21 events, record purses.

  • Brentley Romine ,

The LPGA isn’t the only women’s golf tour introducing record purses this year. The newly re-sponsored Epson Tour, the LPGA’s main feeder circuit, will conduct 21 tournaments this season while offering $4.41 million in total prize money.

That number is up from the previous high of $4 million (from 2019) with the average purse per event increasing from $194,000 to $210,000.

“We’re grateful for tournament partners and host venues that continue to invest in Epson Tour athletes,” said Mike Nichols, chief business officer of LPGA Qualifying Tours. “Five years ago, fewer than 1 in 5 tournaments were playing for a $200,000 purse. Now this mark is the new minimum threshold for every event, opening new doors for all individuals chasing their dream of one day playing on the LPGA Tour.”

The upcoming Epson Tour season will begin March 4-6 with the Florida’s Natural Charity Classic in Winter Haven, Florida. It will conclude Oct. 6-9 with the Epson Tour Championship in Daytona Beach, Florida, where once again the top 10 points earners will graduate to the LPGA. This year, those 10 grads will also be offered $10,000 each to wear the Epson Tour logo on their sleeve as they begin their LPGA careers.

The highest purse for an individual event will be the Aug. 4-7 French Lick Resort Charity Championship, which will feature a $335,000 purse with $50,000 to the winner. For comparison, the top earner in 2013, P.K. Kongkraphan, earned $47,283 for the whole season.

“To see the Epson Tour continue to elevate since I graduated in 2016 is great for the game of golf,” said Ally Ewing, the LPGA Board’s newest player director. “I earned just over $110,000 when purse sizes averaged roughly $139,000, so a 50% growth over such a short span is both encouraging and essential to creating a financially viable path for these future LPGA Tour members.”

HONOLULU (AP) — The Epson Tour remains the primary path to the LPGA Tour, now with larger purses and a new wrinkle on how to get into those tournaments.

The Epson Tour released its 2024 schedule on Tuesday, most noteworthy the five tournaments with $300,000 purses or more — the largest at $400,000 for the Carlisle Arizona Women’s Golf Classic — and the Tour Championship moving from Florida to California.

New to the circuit is switching from money to points to determine the top 10 players who receive LPGA cards the following year. That now is in line with the Race to CME Globe on the LPGA Tour, and the Tour Championship will get a 30% boost in points.

The wrinkle is the end of Monday qualifying, relying instead on the Epson Tour’s relationship with the Women’s All Pro Tour sponsored by Annika Sorenstam. The winner and runner-up at those 10 events get into future Epson Tour events.

Among the goals was to allow the players to compete for more money while spending less. Epson Tour players typically drive to tournaments when they can.

The season starts March 8 with three straight weeks in Florida, capped by the new Atlantic Beach Classic and its $300,000 purse. Next are four tournaments in the West, two in Arizona. The Arizona Women’s Golf Classic moves to the second course at TPC Scottsdale.

Nelly Korda kisses the trophy after winning the Chevron Championship LPGA golf tournament Sunday, April 21, 2024, at The Club at Carlton Woods in The Woodlands, Texas. (AP Photo/Eric Gay)

The Midwest swing in June includes two in Michigan and a new tournament in Indiana (Otter Creek Championship with a $300,000 purse).

“It’s been a focus of mine to create not necessarily a drivable tour, but one that athletes can keep expenses as low as possible,” said Jody Brothers, the chief business and operations officer of the Epson Tour. “The worst thing is the athlete who can play at the next level but didn’t have the finances.”

The average purse is $250,000, and every tournament offers at least $200,000.

The Epson Tour Championship moves from the LPGA International at its Daytona Beach, Florida, headquarters to Indian Wells in the California desert, closer to Epson’s headquarters in North America. That will be Oct. 3-6.

The Epson Tour officially became the feeder tour in 1999 and has produced such players as Karrie Webb, Lorena Ochoa and Inbee Park, all of whom are in the LPGA Hall of Fame. Current players include Nelly Korda and double major winner Lilia Vu.

THE CLUB PRO

Michael Block is in The American Express this week as the PGA section winner, a longstanding tradition. Block is best known for his hole-in-one in the final round of the PGA Championship at Oak Hill last year that led to a tie for 15th and return to the PGA Championship this year.

Ken Weyand is not in the field for the Hero Dubai Desert Classic on the European tour, and for that most people should be thankful.

Weyand earned the wrong kind of attention last week when he accepted a sponsor invitation to the Dubai Invitational, which had a 60-man field for the pro-am format. He is the golf director at The Grove XXIII, the exclusive club in South Florida belonging to Michael Jordan.

How he got into the field is unclear, though Abdullah Al Naboodah is believed to be a member at The Grove and his family sponsored the Dubai Invitational.

Weyand opened with an 87, and because it was a 60-man field, there was no cut. By the end of the week, he followed with scores of 82, 82 and 86. That put him at 53 over par, 72 shots behind the winner, Tommy Fleetwood.

LETTER WRITING

The new PGA Tour schedule of limited fields in elevated events has created plenty of changes in schedules depending on a player’s status.

It also means writing letters to tournament directors in search of a sponsor’s exemption.

“Been a long time,” said former U.S. Open champion Webb Simpson, who has not written for an exemption since 2008. “Right when I turned pro, I got five spots that summer. So I kind of remembered how to do it. My letter this time was a lot better than the last time.”

Simpson revealed the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am already has offered him a spot. That has an 80-man field and a $20 million purse as a signature event.

But he did not write to Tiger Woods for the Genesis Invitational at Riviera.

“It’s my son’s birthday that week,” Simpson said. “I’ve told him before I hate missing it because I do love Riv and supporting him, but I’m not going.”

One thing is certain: Those four exemptions at the signature events will get close scrutiny, especially tournaments that players who might need a spot have a long history of supporting.

Meanwhile, Justin Thomas is No. 28 in the world and would need to stay in the top 30 for two more weeks to avoid needing an exemption to Pebble Beach. He makes his 2024 debut this week at The American Express.

THE FINE PRINT

Grayson Murray is assured of being in all the $20 million signature events the rest of the year from his Sony Open victory .

But his win is likely to knock someone out.

While PGA Tour winners get into signature events for the rest of the year, that category falls behind two other categories -- the top 10 not otherwise eligible in the current FedEx Cup standings, and the leading five from the “swing” series of events that lead up to the signature tournament.

Murray earned 500 points for his win, and with only two tournaments left before Pebble Beach, he is all but assured of staying in the top five. That means whoever finishes sixth would not get in.

The 10 from the current FedEx Cup does not apply to the signature events at Pebble Beach and Riviera; those are based on the final standings from last year.

Similarly, if Justin Thomas is among the top five in the swing series, that would take precedence over him being exempt from being in the top 30 in the world.

PHOTOGRAPHER AWARD

Dom Furore has been chosen for the PGA of America Lifetime Achievement Award in photojournalism.

Furore started with Golf Digest in 1986 and among his early roles was to do a swing sequence with 16-year-old Tiger Woods in California. Woods came to trust him so much that he asked Furore to photograph his wedding in 2004 and his family photo.

Furore has covered majors, other tournaments and golf courses for Golf Digest and its former publication Golf World. That took him fishing with Jack Nicklaus in Russia, accompanying Woods’ mother to her homeland in Thailand and going to Vietnam to photograph the family of Woods’ namesake, Col. Tiger Phong.

He will be recognized during the Golf Writers Association of America awards dinner on April 10 during the Masters.

Patrick Cantlay continues to run in high-end financial circles. Cantlay has signed a partnership with Apollo, a New York-based asset management firm, in which he will wear the logo on the front of his hat. He previously had a hat deal with Goldman Sachs. ... Kevin Chappell, who tried the LIV qualifying event, is playing the Dubai Desert Classic as one of five PGA Tour players who finished among the top 200 in the FedEx Cup. ... Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals, along with “Play Yellow” co-founders Jack and Barbara Nicklaus, have crossed $100 million in money raised through golf to help change kids’ health. ... Porsche remains on the European tour schedule as a sponsor but with a new tournament. Instead of its name on the European Open, the German automaker is title sponsor of the Singapore Classic on March 21-24.

STAT OF THE WEEK

Hideki Matsuyama is out of the top 50 in the world ranking for the first time since the week before the 2013 U.S. Open at Merion.

“I was running around telling people I’m a millionaire — in Japanese yen.” — Chan Kim on his first good finish on the Japan Golf Tour. He tied for 14th in the 2015 Mizuno Open and earned 1,442,222 yen. That converted to $12,008.

Moscow guide&photo! Feel Putin vibes and explore the enigmatic Russian soul through history ...

The sprawling, mind-boggling metropolis of Russian Moscow has long been one of the theatrical stages on which the great dramas of Europe and Asia have been played out in grand style. Burned by Napoleon in 1812, immortalised by Tolstoy, utilised by the Bolsheviks and championed as a bastion of heroic defiance by the post-war communists, it’s almost hard to believe just how defining the historical events that found their home on Moscow’s streets have been. Moscow tour guides will easily be able to mark the major must-see landmarks on the map, from the onion-domed orthodox Saint Basil's Cathedral, to the political powerhouse of Red Square just next door, while others will be quick to recommend a ride on Moscow’s famous subterranean metro system, or a visit to the UNESCO-attested Novodevichy Convent on the city’s southern side. But Moscow is a city also in the throes of a cultural wrangling between the old and the new. Creative energies abound here: Boho bars and pumping super clubs now occupy the iconic mega structures of the old USSR; high-fashion outlets, trendy shopping malls and luxurious residential districts stand as testimony to a city that’s now the undisputed playground of the world’s super-rich, while sprawling modern art museums dominate the cultural offering of the downtown districts north of the Moskva River.

Palaces for ordinary people – that was what Stalin promised to the people when the construction of the Moscow Metro began between the World Wars. The communist dictator hadn’t promised too much. No other underground system in the world can boast such spectacular architecture – chandeliers, decorations, stucco, paintings on the walls – each station is individually designed. No wonder that Moscow residents love their metro. I will guide you through the bustle of one of the busiest subways in the world and show you the most beautiful stations Moscow city has.

Tour of Communist Moscow – every day

After the Communist October Revolution in 1918, Moscow became the capital of the Soviet Empire and was the center of socialist orbit for more than 70 years. This left its mark on Moscow, even if the USSR disintegrated more than a quarter of a century ago. The city streets are full of remnants of the communist regime and the Cold War. This is a walking tour where I will show you the most exciting places in Soviet Moscow: from the notorious KGB headquarters, also known as Lubyanka to the Karl Marx Monument to small hidden remains from the time of hammer and sickle. You will also learn about Stalin’s Great Terror political campaign and the system of the GULAG and how the USSR, the communist Russian republic, became modern Russia.

This place not only has trendy cafes and green squares, but here you can see the most beautiful spray works (according to Albrecht Dürer), hangout-places of the youth and hipsters, as well as learn what Moscow looked like in the 19th century. Here you will also learn exciting and even bloody stories about famous gangsters, eccentric business people and legends like the wandering preacher Rasputin, who is known in Russia either as the “holy devil” or the mad monk. To learn a little more about Moscow’s culture, this is the tour for you. On my alternative tour, you will get to know Moscow away from the tourist hotspots. This tour is of 2 hours duration and you will experience the following on the tour:

  • St. John’s Hill, a quiet oasis right in the center, where time has stopped as it did in pre-Communist times
  • Khokhlovka Art Center, where Russian hipsters and street artists hang out
