✔️ Tips For Visiting A European Party Island

✅  Know How You’ll Be Getting Home!  Some party islands in Europe have modes of transportation just for travelers, like the famous “Disco Bus” in Ibiza, but a lot of them don’t!

Always keep in mind how you’ll be getting home after a night out because a lot of the smaller islands also  do not have taxi-hailing apps like Uber , and instead still rely on traditional taxis you have to call from your phone or a taxi rank.

✅  Consider Taking A Party Cruise  – Party cruises are a great alternative to clubs on dry land because you get to see more of the island on your night out than if you were inside a nightclub.  Ibiza  and Mykonos  are known for having great party cruises!

✅  Stay Hydrated  – There’s nothing worse than being hungover on vacation; these Electrolyte Tablets  are carry-on friendly and can turn any water into a hangover-fighter!

✅  Download Your Hotel’s Location On Google Maps Offline  – Don’t get lost on a night out! If for whatever reason you lose service while on a night out, it’s always helpful to have a Google Map of your location downloaded offline. You can save your hotel’s location offline as well, so you can show taxi drivers where you are going.

✅  Bring Beach Clothes Cute Enough To Go Out In!  Lots of Beach Cover-Ups  today are nice enough in their own right to wear on a night out, which will save a lot of room in your suitcase.

✅  Know That You Might Need Tickets In Advance  – Some of the popular clubs on party islands in Europe have admission tickets. Sometimes,  especially  if there’s a popular DJ playing, they sell out far in advance!

✅  Don’t forget travel insurance! The last thing you want to happen is to be sent home because of medical bills from a party accident. I recommend SafetyWing for remote workers and HeyMondo for shorter vacations.

15 Best Party Destinations in Europe

1. budapest, hungary 🇭🇺.

For a truly unique nightlife experience in Europe, head to the Hungarian capital of Budapest, famous for its ruin bars.

Home is where the heart is, and the heart is in Budapest.

Essentially, any structure that has been abandoned or damaged is largely left alone (bar health and safety requirements) to provide an authentic ruined aesthetic, thus creating ruin bars. Some of these bars are pretty extensive and will house multiple watering holes within one venue. Each one is unique, from the decor to the musical genres and drinks on offer.

As well as being one of Europe’s most budget-friendly cities , Budapest is one of the cheapest party hotspots in Europe too! It’s an ideal location for backpackers on a shoestring. If you’re visiting the city, make sure to check out one of the Budapest bath parties when you’ve finished touring the ruin bars. The city is renowned for its thermal spas which are great for relaxing in during the day, with many of them turning into massive sparties (summer night spa parties) after nightfall!

Where to Stay in Budapest

Carpe Noctem Vitae is the place to stay in Budapest if you want to enjoy a good knees-up. It caters to both groups and solo travellers wanting to party so it’s easy to find someone to get on it with. They host regular bar crawls and games nights and the hostel is well situated near the main taprooms and clubs in the city. Carpe Noctem Vitae also hosts communal dinners which means you can chat with fellow travellers before the booze starts flowing too much!

2. Berlin, Germany 🇩🇪

The nightlife in Berlin is just INSANE! Germany’s capital is a hub of crazy, whacky parties that caters to all types of revellers. The dancing continues all night long, just be prepared for a late start as it’s rare to go out clubbing before 1 am!

A city where the past and future coexist in perfect harmony

Berlin is littered with small yet fun bars, huge superclubs and everything else in between. The city caters to all tastes, from industrial techno to contemporary pop. The sheer variety of what is on offer will leave you mindblown for weeks to come.

The nightclub scene here is unrivalled, even when compared to some other capital cities in Europe. Parties aside, Berlin is also a great backpacking destination in its own right, with heaps of history, culture, and mouthwatering food. If you’re looking for a lit weekend of partying in Europe – look no further!

Where to Stay in Berlin

St Christopher’s Berlin Mitte is the best party hostel in Berlin. It has an on-site Belushi’s Bar (a popular bar chain in Europe) which welcomes hostel guests and the public. This means that you can mingle with a mix of people before you hit the clubs. The hostel also runs lots of events such as pub crawls and quiz nights so you won’t be bored, even on hungover days!

3. Kraków, Poland 🇵🇱

Kraków is becoming increasingly popular as a European party hotspot. It might not be Poland’s capital but this hasn’t dampened the nightlife scene. Trust me when I say, they know how to rave here!

“Krakow is definitely one of the most photogenic cities in Europe – make sure to bring your camera!”

By night, the quaint streets of Kraków transform into a buzzing nightlife economy, with a bustling hive of bars, nightclubs, and boat parties in an eminently walkable area.

By day, this stunning medieval city offers travellers fascinating history and jaw-dropping architecture in spades. It is an ideal place to explore when you’re walking off your hangover!

Kraków is an incredibly budget-friendly destination in Europe and is well-suited for backpackers craving a mix of culture as well as a great nightlife scene.

Where to Stay in Kraków

The clue is in the name, right? The Little Havana Party Hostel is a great base if you’re looking to rave it up in Kraków! With three bars on site, it is the place to form a band of bouncy backpackers to hit the clubs with. They host loads of events such as karaoke, competitions, and bar crawls so the fun starts before you even leave the hostel!

4. Ibiza, Spain 🇪🇸

Twinkle, twinkle little star… point me to the nearest bar. Now, this wouldn’t be a list of party hotspots in Europe without Ibiza!

Somewhere between living and dreaming, there's Ibiza.

Basking in the warm sun of the Mediterranean, Ibiza is world-famous on the nightlife scene and has been Europe’s biggest party destination, well, forever. Flocks of tourists visit yearly for internationally recognized DJs, raves and, of course, sunshine!

Take this as your warning, Ibiza is not budget-friendly in any shape or form. This may well mean that it’s not suitable for backpackers on tight budgets. However, if you want to prioritize an epic experience over money, then you need to visit Ibiza. Who knows, you might even catch Calvin Harris down at the beach!

Where to Stay in Ibiza

Amistat Island Hostel is one of the best-reviewed hostels in Ibiza. It has a sociable and fun vibe so you’ll be sure to meet plenty of other backpackers looking to live it up during your stay. There are daily tours, activities, and evening events which will help get the party started. This hostel has a huge kitchen, a massive sun terrace, and an outdoor swimming pool. A few lengths are bound to help work off that hangover!

5. Amsterdam, Netherlands 🇳🇱

Amsterdam is another one of Europe’s most famous party destinations, best known for its red-light district, huge pride festival and liberal attitude to ‘ soft drugs ’.

Hands up if you've fallen in love with Amsterdam

Most of the nightlife economy focuses on chilling in bars as opposed to raving it up in nightclubs. While the vibe is a little more subdued in Amsterdam than some of these other European party hotspots – that’s probably down the coffee shops – it’s still easy to find a good dance party most evenings.

Amsterdam can be expensive when it comes to boozing so a little bit of research goes a long way to keeping your night messy but your finances in order. Keep an eye on your spending, book nightclub tickets in advance and head to the city’s famous brown bars, a.k.a. bruin cafés, for budget-friendly bevvies. This will all help you stay within your precious backpacker budget.

Where to Stay in Amsterdam

Hans Brinker Hostel is a well-located hostel, just a stone’s throw from Leidseplein, the epicentre of Amsterdam’s nightlife culture. It has a great party atmosphere complete with an on-site bar and nightclub. The best thing? The club stays open until 4 am! You don’t have to go far to find the party here!

6. Lagos, Portugal 🇵🇹

Nestled in the Algarve region of Portugal, Lagos is a solid all-around destination for those who want to chill during the day and party hard when night falls.

There’s no time to be bored in the Algarve

Known for its fantastic beaches, laidback Lagos might not boast the biggest party scene in Europe but it offers the chance to have a more local experience rather than those dominated by British tourists on 18-30 holidays – Ibiza, I’m looking at you!

With a burgeoning craft beer scene, chic cocktail joints and pumping nightclubs offering the most gnarly drinking games you’ll find, there is something to suit all stripes of partygoers here!

Where to Stay in Lagos

Sol A Sol Hostel offers the perfect balance of partying and relaxation, in keeping with the laidback atmosphere in Lagos. The hostel is a stone’s throw from the beach, with a rooftop for BBQs, nightly pub crawls and family-style dinners. It’s great for solo travellers looking to meet people! You can party like crazy here but more importantly, recover well too.

7. Madrid, Spain 🇪🇸

Madrid is a city full of culture, amazing architecture, and an epic party scene that’ll have you painting the town red all night long. The Spanish party hard and Madrid is no different – don’t be surprised if you find yourself out well beyond the sun coming up!

There’s Madrid. And then there’s everywhere else.

Dinner time tends to take place pretty late in Spain, usually later than 9 pm, so food time tends to roll straight into a night of partying. Madrid has everything from cosy sun terraces to massive club nights that will be packed out no matter when you visit.

If you’re looking for a hidden hideaway, don’t miss Medias Puri. This three-floor nightclub is hidden behind an unassuming haberdashery shopfront. Hosting a range of music evenings as well as live shows, it plays a range of genres, from electronic to soul and 80s disco.

Where to Stay in Madrid

Cats Hostel is the place to go if you’re looking for a party hostel in Europe. They host loads of events such as tapas tours, guided city walks and daily pub crawls so you’re sure to meet someone to party with here. They have an onsite bar and even a hangover recovery room!

8. Prague, Czech Republic 🇨🇿

Prague is another bustling city which sure knows how to party. The capital of the Czech Republic is pretty popular these days as a nightlife destination, so prices are on the up. However, there are still some good deals still to be had when compared to other party destinations in Western Europe.

There'll be Czechs bouncing in the streets of Prague tonight

Prague is famous for its beer so you have to try it while you are there. For a novel way to experience the taproom culture, why not head to one of the famous beer spas? This is a great way to relax while truly immersing (literally!) in the boozy side of the capital.

There are decent nightclubs and bars all over the city which are always busy, weekend or not. People don’t sleep in Prague! Expect nights out to last well into the early hours, as long as you have the stamina to keep up. The city is a popular destination for interrailers due to its good transport connections so it is an ideal spot for those who want to travel onward to new places.

Where to Stay in Prague

The MadHouse Prague is an epic place to stay in the city. Parties are the lifeblood of this hostel and their staff have perfected the formula for a good night! Get ready for plenty of pre-party games, socialising, and activities before they take you out to visit the best party spots around the city. They also host nightly communal dinners making it easy to meet other travellers to party it up with.

9. Zagreb, Croatia 🇭🇷

Zagreb is often overlooked in favour of Western European destinations, however, it shouldn’t be! It is a backpacker’s paradise boasting vibrant nightlife, reasonable prices and friendly locals. The city hosts various festivals and events, providing endless entertainment.

Dear Croatia, please stop being so beautiful. It’s making it hard for me to leave

Its central location allows for easy exploration of Croatia’s scenic wonders, meaning there will be plenty to do after you’ve dragged yourself out of the club. Zagreb has a welcoming atmosphere making it easy to meet other travellers to buddy up with.

The city has some great pub crawls and clubs for backpackers to sample. I recommend SPUNK for live music as it is free to enter and is normally pretty busy. You just have to look past its name!

Where to Stay in Zagreb

Whole World Wide Hostel is a great hostel for those looking to dip their toes into the party scene. They run one of the biggest bar crawls in Zagreb and also host lots of activities, so you’ll have a great time and meet other backpackers. The hostel has its own on-site bar which means you don’t have to travel far to find the party and there is a complimentary breakfast which helps start the day right after a night of partying!

10. Lisbon, Portugal 🇵🇹

For a capital city, Lisbon is not too expensive, making it a great destination for those on a budget. While a little overlooked compared to other party cities in Europe, it still has plenty to offer.

Lost buses, street food, hostels and lost stuff – the best memories of any traveler.

The city is full of bustling bars nestled down small side streets and there are loads of pulsing nightclubs hidden away down cute alleys. It is rather spread out but with almost every side street having at least one small yet banging bar, you’ll never be too far away from the action.

One of the best bar crawls I’ve done was in Lisbon so I’d definitely recommend making your way through several bars in one evening. If that hasn’t satisfied your partying requirements, continue onto some of the city’s nightclubs which promise to be full of hedonists dancing the night away.

Where to Stay in Lisbon

Goodnight Hostel , with its retro charm and social vibe, is my top pick for the best party hostel in Lisbon. Housed in an 18th-century building in Downtown Lisbon, it’s conveniently located near all the must-visit spots. Enjoy sangria evenings, cheap cocktails, and daily pub crawls here, making it easy to mingle with your fellow backpackers.

11. Mykonos, Greece 🇬🇷

Sitting in the Cyclades group of islands, Mykonos is well known for its summer party vibes, making it one of the go-to party hotspots in Greece. Offering sunny days, chunky gyros, and some of the world’s biggest nightclubs, it is a must-visit destination for all those who love to party.

All I want is good music, great friends, bright lights, and late Mykonos nights.

There are a range of beach clubs in Mykonos including Scorpios and Paradise Beach Club, both of which are known for their banging DJs. When you’re done with the partying, be sure to check out some of the water sports you can try along the coast, or venture onwards to another Greek island paradise!

If you’re specifically looking for a coastal party spot, Mykonos is difficult to beat. The downside is the cost – while not super pricey, it is a mid-range destination that will likely price out those travelling on small budgets.

Where to Stay in Mykonos

MyCocoon Hostel Mykonos is one of the coolest hostels out there. Capitalising on Greece’s beautiful whitewashed buildings, this minimalist pod-style hostel offers clean and comfortable rooms with a novel feel.

It’s a little more luxurious than dirtbag backpackers would likely opt for but with on-site bars (one of which is on the rooftop!) and an infinity pool, it is well worth the price tag. You’ll find a welcome blend of chill-out spaces, mixed in with a party buzz here.

12. Edinburgh, Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

If you’re looking for a great night out with a hearty dose of Scottish hospitality, the wee capital of Edinburgh is a great place to head! Most of the bars and nightclubs are close to the city centre, making this a very walkable destination.

Edinburgh, where the streets have no name… just lots of cobblestones!

Edinburgh is pretty cheap as European destinations go but you should stick to Scottish drinks such as Tennent’s lager – or treat yourself to a bottle of Buckfast if you plan on staying up through the night! This is the authentic local experience after all!

The city is particularly picturesque at night, with landmarks like the Scott Monument lit up. Have a wander, sample some whisky or gin, and top it off with a boogie at a few of Scotland’s finest nightclubs!

Where to Stay in Edinburgh

Kick Ass Hostel in Edinburgh is aptly named as it’s a great party hostel with a brilliant social atmosphere. There is a well-priced on-site bar which holds regular events and games nights. Kick Ass is certainly not the place to go if you value your sleep but if you want to rave late into the night, you’re in the right place!

13. London, England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

London is home to an incredibly varied party scene, which caters to all musical genres and venue types. Head to Camden if the alternative scene is your thing or stick to Shoreditch if swanky cocktail bars are what you’re after.

It's always pub o'clock in London.

Be warned, London’s nightlife can be expensive. However, there are some great clubs and bars to try that are budget-friendly. The key is doing your research beforehand and staying in a hostel which understands partygoers.

Most party hostels in London run some sort of pub crawl which is a good place to start. Stick to house drinks or beers on tap and you won’t spend too much money. Once you’re done with the pubs, hit up one of the many clubs for a full-on party! There are far too many to list but Clapham is normally a good starting point if you can’t find any.

Where to Stay in London

Onefam Notting Hill comes with a warning for those wanting to make a booking. “Reservations here are only recommended if you want to have fun and party.” So if you’re looking for a lively, sociable party hostel in London, then this is the place for you! They offer free family meals so you’ll have plenty of opportunity to meet other backpackers before heading out on their nightly pub crawls!

14. Barcelona, Spain 🇪🇸

Barcelona is another destination that gets busy pretty late but the advantage of this is that you can stay out all night long if you don’t want those epic nights to end. Barcelona is a popular destination for European backpackers so the hostel scene is great, meaning you’ll meet loads of like-minded travellers to sniff out the best parties with!

Brunchelona. Wine not? Living the best life here in Rioja.

Barcelona is pretty affordable in the grand scheme of things, just be smart about where you buy drinks and where you go out. L’Eixample District is a popular area with an international crowd. If you are looking to get messed up on cheap drink deals, this is the place!

Barcelona is a sprawling city, so make sure you do your research when it comes to booking accommodation in case it turns out to be more of a journey to the bars than you anticipated.

Kabul hostel terrace

Where to Stay in Barcelona

Kabul Party Hostel is Barcelona’s most famous party hostel. It’s incredibly well located, close to both the metro and Las Ramblas. The hostel hosts free daily walking tours which will help you get your bearings in the city before heading back to your accommodation to start the party. They also have an onsite bar, daily pub crawls, a rooftop terrace and nightly games in the hostel. Get ready for an awesome stay you won’t forget (unless you overdo the sangria)!

15. Dublin, Ireland 🇮🇪

The Irish are famously some of the biggest drinkers in Europe and in the capital Dublin, every night is a chance to party. Even if you don’t like Ireland’s national drink, Guinness, there is far more to a boozy trip in Ireland than pints.

My goodness, my Guinness! Lovely day for a Guinness. Guinness gracious.

Irish whiskey is a very popular tipple or if you like your alcohol to pack more of a punch, opt for a Drunk Leprechaun cocktail instead! Ireland is a great place to visit and Dublin is a common startpoint because of its great transport links. While it is a popular stop on European backpacking routes , lots of people visit solely for a weekend of partying, myself included (many times)!

Dublin can be on the expensive side, but if you stick to house drinks and Irish beers, you’ll save quite a bit. Temple Bar is the part of Dublin where the largest concentration of bars, pubs, and nightclubs are, but it is also more expensive. Most places stay open well beyond 2 am so you can go wild until your heart’s content.

Where to Stay in Dublin

Kinlay House is a cracking place to stay whilst you’re in Dublin. They hold nightly live music sessions in their on-site pub which will get the party started before you head out into the city! At Kinlay House they also provide free breakfast, free walking tours and games nights to help you settle into Dublin!

If you’re visiting the continent looking to let your hair down, then make sure you visit one of these epic European party destinations. Each of these party hotspots has a unique vibe and regardless of whether you want to soak up the sun in Greece or dance in the rain in Ireland, you can party ‘til the sun comes up!

So whose round is it?! 🥂🍷🍸🍹 And, which of these party places in Europe are you headed to next?

Europe Escape

I just got back from my 3rd solo trip with Expat Explorer & can't wait to join some more. This time was a 12 day Christmas and New Year's Europe Escape 2023/2024 and being the first time I was ever away from home for the holidays, it was truly magical, everything I imagined plus more. Our tour guide Luke was very personable, knowledgeable, caring and simply fun. He went out of his way to make sure each and everyone of us was well taken care of & provided plenty of ideas/options to us to get the most we could get out of each and every single day. Luke even dressed up as Santa Claus on Christmas Day!?! Our driver, James, was very professional, courtesies and when able, took the time to get to know us but always made it a priority to get us to our next destination as well as keep us safe. This tour is fast-paced with plenty of early morning departures and lots of walking but in doing so, the trade off is that you get to experience as much as possible in each of the various destination cities along the way. As a solo traveler, I never felt unsafe or alone and the camadarie of our group was instant. I appreciate that Expat Explorer allows you the freedom to decide between various pre-set excursions in the various destinations or the opportunity to explore on your own and/or even some combo of the two. If you are on the fence about one these tours, I say do your self a favor and just book it :) - Christie Fick

The Great Adventure

I had an amazing experience on the 14 day tour. After Covid lockdowns, my daughter and I were eager to travel overseas and see places we haven’t been to. Everything on the tour was so well organised and the tour guides Enmanuelle, Phillipe and Oksana were very informative and knowledgeable. They all did an exceptional job. All the hotels we stayed at were very clean, spacious and had a big variety for breakfast. The only suggestion would be to have the option for travellers to return to hotels earlier. Days started early and involved lots of walking and the free time should be an option to return to hotel. A note to travellers would be to be cautious In Amsterdam of dodgy uber drivers asking you to cancel trips and to pay in cash. Also in shops if you don’t see the price for an item don’t tap your card for purchases because you will be in for a big shock when you check your account balance.

Best of Central Europe Tour

Best of Central Europe

This tour had everything I was looking for! Great Eastern European food, great local beer, and a variety of things to do for any type of interest. The hikes were fantastic, and the transportation between stops was well organized. This tour offers a good balance of free time and time with the group, which allows you to come together at the end of the day over dinner to discuss your day.

Rome to Berlin: Piazzas, Prague & the Past

Great diversity of countries and cities but WAY too fast paced. One night in Slovenia and Poland was ridiculous and with travel time some days we spent less than 15 hours in the city. The guide was a but inexperienced so we didn't have a good description of some of the cities. Great way to make friends and see cities! Would recommend going end of August or later as it was still very hot going through the cities!!

Baltic Experience Tour

Baltic Experience

First and foremost with these tours, the enjoyment and experiences can be enhanced by the guide you have and our guide for this trip was exceptional! There are a LOT of cobblestones to walk on this tour so sensible footwear is an absolute must. Every city visited had its 'Old City" which were paved with cobblestones. It was a fascinating tour of the history of this part of Europe from medieval times to present day. The days spent canoeing and trekking in the countryside offered a welcome break from the cities visited. Klaipeda and the day trip to the unique, World Heritage-listed Curonian Spit National Park was just one of the highlights of the countryside experience. A hillside of Witches was a unique collection of sculptured tree trunks depicting all manner of mythical witches and demons. Amazing to wander through this huge area with such an engaging local guide to share the stories and history of the area. Hiking and canoe through Aukstaitija National Park's dense forests and lakes provided an opportunity for not only physical activity, but also time to swim and stop to appreciate the wild flowers and other flora. Plants that are considered garden annuals here, grow wild amongst the grasses and forests of this area. But Riga was one of the most beautiful cities visited. Fragrant gardens, fountains, old and new public sculptures and the well preserved and restored art nouveau buildings, made this city enchanting and fascinating. The trip did consist of long journeys especially by bus from Warsaw to Berlin. It proved to be quite exhausting and could be well improved by a stay somewhere in between these two major cities. Overall, if interested in Russian and German occupation and the history of these Baltic countries and their struggle for independence then this is the trip for it.

Essential Britain & Ireland

I’ve just returned from this fabulous tour! I highly recommend it. We had the greatest tour guide and bus driver. The itinerary was fascinating . You read about the itinerary before you go, but the reality of the itinerary far exceeded my expectation! We were blessed with great weather, too. We only had misty rain on two of the 10 days. I would probably change one of the hotels and one if the meals, but of those were fine. Others were just better! The excursions were great. I went on four out six of them. Did our own thing the last night in London. The Park Plaza Westminster Bridge was my favorite hotel and it was strategically located!

Enjoy afternoon tea in London

Sample over 300-years of history in the simplicity of homemade scones with whipped cream and jam. This deliciously British treat is best enjoyed in the afternoon, complete with a hot cup of Earl Grey, cucumber sandwiches and a tower of sugary delights.

Explore ancient Athens

You don't need to be a historian to appreciate the significance of Athens. Your love affair with the city might begin with goddess Athena’s Parthenon temple and the ruins of Acropolis, but it’s likely to end in a quaint alleyway getting a glimpse at daily life in this ancient capital. The story of Athens continues to unfold.

Catch a flamenco show in Spain

Discover the soul-stirring emotion of a Flamenco show in Spain. This expressive art-form has an intangible cultural heritage recognised by UNESCO, merging song, dance and musical instruments into a performance that has to be experienced at least once. Finish with dinner of paella or tapas to round off your perfect evening.

View the Northern Lights in Iceland

Mother Nature’s wonders come to life with the Aurora Borealis or ‘Northern Lights’. In the frosty landscapes of Iceland, this light display offers viewers a genuine pinch-me moment as vivid colours dance across the night sky.

Spend a night at the opera in Vienna

Hear the talents of traditional opera with the ghosts of Mozart and Strauss in your presence. Though there are more than few places to catch the opera in Vienna, none can compare to the State Opera House (Staatsoper).

Our top 5 things to do in Europe & Britain

There are endless pinch-me moments to be found across the many countries that make up the continent of Europe. But where to even begin? Perhaps a Flamenco show in Spain, afternoon tea in London or a Northern Lights viewing in frosty Iceland? Here are some of the highlights of our Europe and Britain trips that you're sure to love.

Paris, France

The world’s largest gallery and the home of Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa, the Louvre is without rival in the art world and is a must see when in Paris. Allow an entire day to explore its eight departments, not missing the Egyptian antiquities, Islamic art and various halls of sculptures. End your day with sunset by the Louvre Pyramid.

London, England

The British Museum

With some eight million works within its permanent collection, The British Museum is an illustrious European landmark. Admire objects brought back from the voyages of Captain James Cook and walk in the controversial presence of the Parthenon Marbles.

Florence, Italy

Uffizi Gallery

The Tuscan capital is home to Uffizi Gallery, where the brushworks of art’s true masters can be found. Names like Raffaello, Leonardo, and Michelangelo fill Uffizi’s grand pink walls, whilst internal courtyards leading to the Arno River reveal the building’s architectural brilliance.

Best museums in Europe & Britain

When traveling Europe with Trafalgar, museum hopping is one of the best ways to understand the culture and history of the places you visit. You’ll find yourself critiquing ancient art and staring in awe at some of the world’s most prominent works. Here are some of our favorites.

Paella Valenciana

Saffron, snails, butterbeans and bomba rice are just some of the ingredients you might find in traditional Spanish paella. Despite originating from the coastal town of Valencia, Paella Valenciana is a variety without seafood. You'll love sitting back to enjoy a steaming plate over the sounds of Spanish jazz in a lively alfresco restaurant.

Beef Stroganoff

Now a staple dish in many parts of the world, beef stroganoff is best enjoyed in its birthplace in Russia with a vodka in hand. This simple dish of beef strips sauteed in a sour cream sauce offers a heart-warming taste of this country’s culinary heritage.

Bouillabaisse

The Mediterranean city of Marseille is where a French culinary icon can be found and devoured. The fragrant stew of bouillabaisse, commonly served with crusty white bread, boils up the finest local seafood and seasonal vegetables with the flavors of fennel, saffron and cayenne pepper.

Best food in Europe & Britain

Our trips to Europe gravitate around indulgent local mealtimes. With new cuisines and cooking methodologies found at every turn, this continent is simply delicious.

What to pack for a tour in Europe

People packing for a tour

With such a large expanse of space to explore, on some days, long journeys are unavoidable. The scenery will provide plenty of visual entertainment, while headphones can be used to listen to some local music or enjoy podcasts about European history, culture and politics when you're not enjoying the storytelling from your Travel Director.

A good book

Exploring Europe is best done at a relaxed pace with ample opportunity to absorb your surroundings. Dedicate a few days to sitting in a park or a cafe, alternating between reading and watching the world go by.

Versatile shoes

Within the space of one outing you may experience all kinds of terrain when in Europe. Pack shoes that can see you walking from an elegant restaurant to a cobbled footpath, with a stroll along the soft grass of a park in between.

A blank journal

With the wealth of inspiration tucked into every corner of Europe, you may find yourself compelled to write down notes or memories. At the very least to share recommendations with friends when you return home.

All climate clothing

No matter the time of year you travel, Europe can deliver a myriad of temperatures. From frosty cities of Scandinavia to the temperate hills of Portugal, layered clothing best suits the varying micro-climates across this continent.

What’s not to like about a great festival, let alone going to one with fellow thirsty travellers? With an abundant choice of festivals in Europe and around the world, it might be time to consider some of the many festival tours on offer.

Did somebody say festival tours?

Whether it’s a European beer tour or party holiday package to other destinations, festival tours are becoming one of the fastest growing travel segments in the world.

Festival tours offer travellers an option to experience a destination in the eyes of a local, unlike the usual (let’s face it: boring) sight-seeing tours.

Festival Tours

Because when you’re at a festival, you meet people who are there to have a fun time, a great party and to simply let their hair down. Try doing that when visiting the Eiffel tower.

Are all the best festivals in Europe?

While festivals in Europe have tradition on their side – Oktoberfest in Munich and La Tomatina for example – some of the greatest events in the world are held in Brazil, USA and countries throughout Asia.

In fact, the biggest festival on earth is Rio Carnival in Brazil with over 6 million visitors a year. Yes, you read that right: 6 million. That’s more than the population of most cities in the world. Of these, 2 million people hit the streets of Rio each day for the 5-day festival. That’s one hell of a party.

Songkran in Thailand and Holi in India count as the biggest festivals in Asia, drawing millions of people celebrating the Thai New Year (Songkran ) or the victory of good over evil (Holi, also known as the festival of colours).

Festivals in Europe

Burning Man, an annual gathering that takes place at Black Rock City in Nevada USA, is widely considered the festival with the most sought-after tickets in the world . With just 70,000 people at each event, a ticket lottery ensures that this should be on your bucket list of festival tours.

Other festivals in Europe however are on par with these: the Stuttgart Beer festival in Germany is the 2nd biggest beer festival in the world with over 4 million visitors, and the Battle of the Oranges in Italy rivals La Tomatina.

Where do I go for festival tours?

Let’s not do things by halves, so if you’re ever contemplating going on a festival tour then here are some of the biggest festivals in the world.

  • Rio Carnival, Brazil
  • Oktoberfest Tours 2022 & 2023 , Germany
  • St Patrick’s Day, Ireland
  • Stuttgart Beer Festival , Germany (the 2nd biggest beer festival in the world after Oktoberfest in Munich)
  • La Tomatina , Spain
  • Songkran (Thai New Year), Thailand
  • Full moon party, Thailand
  • Holi Festival, India
  • Burning Man, USA
  • Mardi Gras, USA
  • Glastonbury, UK
  • Rock in Rio, Brazil
  • Day of the Dead, Mexico
  • Hogmanay, Scotland
  • The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo, Scotland

Some of these are limited by numbers (eg. La Tomatina only has 20,000 tickets each year), while some of them are a celebration of an event that has neither a limit nor specific location, such as the Thai New Year.

Festival Tours Thirsty Swagman

Tips for a great festival tour

At Thirsty Swagman we’ve got this covered because that’s what we do: great festival tours. Zero boring sightseeing, no uninteresting trips to a tourist trap – just the world’s coolest party holidays, beer tours and festival travel.

So here are some tips for your next festival trip:

Festival Accommodation

A good festival tour will have accommodation booked close to the festival grounds. You wouldn’t want to navigate your way back to the hotel via hidden laneways or multiple train stations. Always ensure you’re within short walking distance of where the party is at .

Many of the world’s greatest festivals are day-time events and considering hotels usually don’t let you check in until late afternoon, it may be worth arriving a day before you plan to party. Similarly for night -time festivals, such as Rio Carnival which goes until well past sunrise, you wouldn’t want an 11am check out the next day.

Festival Travel

Getting to and from the festival destination

If you’re flying into a city specifically for a festival, it’s worth planning well in advance the best route from the airport to the hotel. This will help you avoid some dodgy cab driver taking you the long way to your hotel.

For night-time festivals, it’s also well worth having a flight out in the afternoon on the day of departure. There is no pain greater than nursing a hangover on a morning flight.

Festival Tickets

This can be the most challenging bit: getting tickets. While many festivals are open to anyone who wants to attend (eg Hogmanay, also known as the Scottish New Year), many location specific festivals require you to pre-book tickets. And by pre-book, this can literally be a year in advance. Anyone who’s ever tried to book their spot at Burning Man or the Glastonbury Festival will know that this can be almost like a lottery, and tickets sell out in mere minutes.

So get your tickets organised before you even begin to plan your festival tour.

Warm up to these coastal party spots on the continent.

Malta offers plenty of beaches, clubs and public events to please those looking for a good time in the sun.

While a nearly-deserted island or coastline beloved by birdwatchers might sound like fine vacation destinations to the mature traveler, older teenagers or young adults are apt to find it infinitely more interesting to explore areas where party people come out at night. Here are a trio of coastal resort areas bound to appeal equally to both parents and their older kids.

The Riviera Romagnola, Italy: The Riviera Romagnola refers to a 55-mile stretch of seacoast along the Adriatic Sea in the regions of Emilia-Romagna and Marche. This area beginning from the mouth of the Reno River in the north to Gabicce Monte in the south attracts by day with sandy beaches with shallow waters, theme parks, water sports facilities and countless bars and restaurants. When it comes to choosing a “bagno,” a beach resort charging a fee for entry, lounge chair, beach umbrella and services, visitors are spoiled for choice. Self-catering beaches offering more privacy can also be found.

The unofficial capital of the area is the sprawling resort town of Rimini. Behind its beachside strip of bars and restaurants offering excellent nightlife are monuments dating back to Roman times, including the Arch of Augustus, Italy’s oldest intact Roman arch. Just north of the city is found Italia in Miniatura, a miniature park depicting the whole of Italy along with other European landmarks and geographical features. A visit to Cervia presents the opportunity to discover the history of salt-panning. In Ravenna, those impressed by mosaics will feel they’ve landed in a byzantine paradise.

Along the Riviera Romagnola’s southern tip is found the town of Gabbice Mare, home to the nightclub known as Baia Imperiale. The massive club with its four dance floors and distinctive columns has served as a filming location, and from 2014-2018, it was ranked the No. 1 Italian nightclub on the International Nightlife Association’s list of Top 100 Best Clubs in the World. In Riccione, party people have been getting down for decades at the club known as Cocoricò. The notorious locale was the subject of an award-winning documentary film in 2023.

A peak time to visit Rimini and its surroundings is during the annual event known as Pink Night, a weekend full of concerts, art installations and fabulous displays of fireworks; this is scheduled for July 5-7 in 2024.

Costa Brava, Spain: This term meaning rugged coast refers to a coastal region of Catalonia in northeast Spain stretching from the town of Blanes to the French border. Some of its best-known resort towns include Blanes, Lloret de Mar and Tossa de Mar, each of which offers its own distinctive experience.

Lloret de Mar has a well-earned reputation as party central and offers a pulsating nightlife scene, from small pubs where the action spills out into the streets to massive clubs such as the ColossOs Disco, capable of accommodating 2,500 guests at once. Outside city limits is found Millennium Party, which guests are brought to by shuttle bus. From its roof terrace, the huge venue offers spectacular views of the city below. Those who like to be out on the town but don’t enjoy the club scene can settle into a tavern serving excellent local wines and if they find one they love, pay a visit to the winery from which it came.

Just north of Lloret is found Tossa de Mar, which enchants with its perfectly formed bay overlooked by the ancient fortress of Vila Vella. Along the town’s steep and winding cobbled streets, bars, restaurants, boutiques and art galleries all beckon. The coastal path leading northward offers stunning vistas over the bluest of seas and the chance for dips in hidden coves. Blanes, popular with Spanish visitors, offers its visitors experiences typical to an old Catalan coastal village such as visiting a fish or a farmer’s market.

History lovers would enjoy a daylong excursion to the inland city of Girona, where the influences of the Romans, Arab and Jewish communities can still be felt within the medieval walls that flank the city. A prime time to visit is during Temps des Flors, an event in which florists compete to stage the most innovative and eye-catching floral arrangements among the Old Town’s natural assets. The 2024 edition of this beloved flower festival is scheduled for May 11-19.

Malta: The tiny island nation of Malta offers an intriguing juxtaposition of rich history and an exhilarating nightlife scene. Beautiful beaches and budget-friendly prices add to its appeal. Most of the island’s major coastal resorts are scattered along the island’s northern coast. Reliable public transportation makes getting around cheap and easy. Golden Bay, Paradise Bay and Mellieha Bay are considered some of the island’s best places for a sun-soaked day in the sand.

A young crowd on the lookout for fun can be seen nightly in the area known as Paceville, in the town of St. Julian’s. Places to see and be seen include Havana and Sky Club. Gianpula Village is the place to see popular performers and the best-known DJs. Bedtimes also come late at night in Sliema, where bars, restaurants and snack stalls line the waterfront.

Malta’s capital is Valletta, a UNESCO World Heritage city whose sights include a citadel built in the 16th century by the Knights of St John, the Grandmaster Palace, and the Upper Barrakka Gardens overlooking the busy harbor. A highlight of any tour is St John’s Co-Cathedral, with two Caravaggio paintings gracing its baroque interior. The city’s architectural ensemble is connected by steep winding staircases and fountain-lined squares. Street foods to be sampled include pastizz, pasties stuffed with soft cheese or savory peas.

One of Malta’s top summer events is the Isle of MTV, at which chart-topping musicians perform for free. The date of the event in 2024, which usually happens in mid- to late July, is yet to be confirmed.

Browse by holiday destination, europe travel faqs, do i need a covid-19 vaccine to join an intrepid trip.

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travellers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises).

However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travellers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

Do you need a visa to travel to Europe?

Whether or not you need a visa to travel to European countries largely depends on the nationality on your passport and whether the country you're travelling to is part of the Schengen Agreement.

This agreement sees 26 European countries offer visa-free travel to nationals from 60 other countries including Australia, the United States, Canada, Japan, and the United Kingdom.

To determine whether the country you're travelling to requires a visa, head to the   Schengen Visa's information website.

What is the internet access like in Europe?

You can easily access the internet in most countries in Europe, generally in capital cities and other major towns. Internet access may be limited in regional locations such as national parks or remote villages in some countries.

Can I use my mobile phone in Europe?

You shouldn't have a problem using your mobile phone while travelling throughout Europe, however, your international data roaming will need to be activated in order to connect to the internet or send messages (unless you connect to the local wi-fi).

What are the toilets like in Europe?

Modern, flushable toilets are the standard in the majority of European countries.

Can I drink the water in Europe?

Tap water in most European countries is considered safe to drink unless it is otherwise marked.

When should I book a tour in Europe?

There is no 'best time' to travel around Europe as most countries offer plenty to do in every season of the year.

T he most popular time to travel to countries like Greece, Italy, and Croatia is during the summer months (June, July, and August) so you can make the most of each country's respective beaches and warm weather.

C ountries such as Iceland, Norway, and Sweden are known for their snowy landscapes and northern lights sightings during Winter (December, January, and February).

How much does a Europe tour cost?

A tour in Europe can vary depending on the countries you want to visit, the style of tour, and how long you want to go for but you can expect to pay anywhere between USD$1,000 to USD$5,000, with most tours around USD$2,500.

Is tipping common in Europe?

Tipping isn't as prevalent in Europe as it is in some other countries and definitely isn't expected, but if you like the quality of service you've been given at hotels, restaurants etc then a tip is always appreciated.

Are credit cards widely accepted in Europe?

While credit cards are accepted in all European countries (especially in capital cities and other larger cities), smaller cafes or local run businesses may not have EFTPOS machines so it's always best to carry around a little cash to cover these expenses.

What is ATM access like in Europe?

You should have no problem finding ATMs in most European cities.

What currency will I need on a Europe tour?

The official currency of Europe is the Euro (€), however, only 19 of the 28 countries in the European Union use this. Countries that still use their own currency include Norway, Switzerland, Belarus, Croatia, Denmark, and Sweden.

Is Europe safe for LGBTQIA+ travellers?

Europe is considered a reasonably safe continent for LGBTQIA+ travellers with plenty of countries openly accepting, welcoming, and embracing the community.

This is evident in large capital cities such as Paris, Berlin, Madrid, and Vienna.

Some countries still hold traditional religious beliefs such as Belarus and Poland so a degree of caution should be taken when travelling around cities and remote regions in those countries.

Will I need a socket adapter for Europe?

If you plan on travelling to multiple countries throughout Europe then purchasing an all-in-one, worldwide adapter is the safest way to go.

I f you don't want to do that, your safest bet is to buy an adapter that uses C or E/F-type plugs as most European countries recognise this.

Do I need to purchase travel insurance before travelling?

Absolutely. All passengers travelling with Intrepid are required to purchase travel insurance before the start of their trip. Your travel insurance details will be recorded by your leader on the first day of the trip. Due to the varying nature, availability and cost of health care around the world, travel insurance is very much an essential and necessary part of every journey.

For more information on insurance, please go to: Travel Insurance

Are Intrepid trips accessible for travellers with disabilities?

We are committed to making travel widely  accessible , regardless of ability or disability. We do our best to help you see the world, regardless of physical or mental limitations.

We are always happy to talk to travellers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them toward the most suitable itinerary for their needs and, where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.

Europe Clear Sea Beach

10 of the best Europe summer destinations you need to visit this year

Travel inspiration from six-two, frequently asked questions about europe.

Your search for ""

When is the best time to travel to Europe?

When is it NOT the best time to travel to Europe? No matter when you plan on visiting Europe, we’re sure you’ll love it!

Summer in Europe (between June to August) doesn’t need an introduction. Long sunny days, good gelato, breathtaking beach views - it’s Europe in all its glory. But for a springy touch, visit Europe during March and April - when flowers & fields are in full bloom and the temperature is still cool.

Winter in Europe is amazing too. Who wouldn’t love skiing down the Austrian Alps? Not to mention, fewer crowds and cheaper stays. And for chilly nights and vibrant shades of orange and red - visit Europe during October.

What are the best destinations to visit in Europe?

You really aren’t gonna ask us to choose, are you? This depends entirely on what you wanna see. But some of the must-do destinations in Europe would be Paris, Venice, Amsterdam, London, Prague, Rome, Ibiza and all the Alps! And guess what? We’ve got plenty of trips visiting all of these destinations for you to check out.

Do I need a visa to travel to Europe?

Your visa requirements can change according to your citizenship (and also according to the length and purpose of your visit). We always recommend that you check out our visa guide for more information.

What should I pack for a Europe trip?

Your passport, of course! But some other essentials would be:

• Comfortable shoes: There’s gonna be a lot of walking around • Light jacket: It tends to get quite windy • Crossbody bags: To carry all your stuff when you’re licking away that gelato

And the rest would depend on which season you’re arriving in Europe. Get loose, breathable clothes for summer, or thick jackets and multiple layers for winter.

How many days should I spend in Europe?

All your days. Just kidding (or are we?). This entirely depends on what you wanna do. We’ve got big trips, small trips, and everything in between. So if you’re looking for some inspo on how many days you should spend in Europe, check out our trips .

Is the tap water safe to drink in Europe?

Yep. You’ll be fine drinking tap water in most of Europe. But it’s always a good idea to double check with your Trip Manager if you’re doubtful.

What is ATM access like in Europe?

You won’t have to worry about getting enough cash when you’re in Europe. Because ATMs in Europe are accessible as gelatos in Rome. Just stay wary of those sneaky ATM fees…

Is tipping customary in Europe?

Generally, tipping isn’t mandatory in Europe. And a lot of the time, service charges are included in the bill. But if you really like the food (which you will, you’re in Europe, after all) or service, leaving 5-10% is always appreciated.

Moscow Metro

The Moscow Metro Tour is included in most guided tours’ itineraries. Opened in 1935, under Stalin’s regime, the metro was not only meant to solve transport problems, but also was hailed as “a people’s palace”. Every station you will see during your Moscow metro tour looks like a palace room. There are bright paintings, mosaics, stained glass, bronze statues… Our Moscow metro tour includes the most impressive stations best architects and designers worked at - Ploshchad Revolutsii, Mayakovskaya, Komsomolskaya, Kievskaya, Novoslobodskaya and some others.

What is the kremlin in russia?

The guide will not only help you navigate the metro, but will also provide you with fascinating background tales for the images you see and a history of each station.

And there some stories to be told during the Moscow metro tour! The deepest station - Park Pobedy - is 84 metres under the ground with the world longest escalator of 140 meters. Parts of the so-called Metro-2, a secret strategic system of underground tunnels, was used for its construction.

During the Second World War the metro itself became a strategic asset: it was turned into the city's biggest bomb-shelter and one of the stations even became a library. 217 children were born here in 1941-1942! The metro is the most effective means of transport in the capital.

There are almost 200 stations 196 at the moment and trains run every 90 seconds! The guide of your Moscow metro tour can explain to you how to buy tickets and find your way if you plan to get around by yourself.
