Why walk with us?

Fiji is a great place to go hiking and we are fiji’s only dedicated hiking company.

We work in partnership with remote communities to take you off the beaten track, to experience Fiji’s interior – its dramatic peaks, pristine forests, sparkling rivers, remote villages and unique history – and by going on foot you have the opportunity to experience the vibrant traditional culture that runs deep within Fijian society.

We aim to provide an experience for you that doesn’t feel touristy, but where you are treated as a guest with an opportunity to get to know Fiji a little bit better by hiking through a tucked away corner of the interior and talking to both your guides and people in the communities who host you. Find out more about us, our team and how we operate.

What we provide

Our pricing includes transport from start to end – using our 4WDs when we leave the tar seal – simple accommodation, most meals, a dedicated trip leader, community guides, all cultural protocols, and contributions to village development funds, as well as taxes.

Your guides

In addition to your trip leader, we support and train people from our partner communities to guide you. The land you’re crossing is their land, their vanua, to which people in Fiji have an inalienable connection. We believe it’s only right for them to show you where they live, farm, hunt and fish. Your guides are first aid trained, and while English doesn’t always come easily to some of them, they are knowledgeable about the plants, animals, and land around you.

A word on tracks

Our routes often follow old paths between villages, pig-hunting tracks, or farm paths. These can be rough and muddy. The villages work to keep these tracks clear for you, but please don’t expect constructed walking tracks! A good level of fitness and a spirit of adventure are musts!

We arrange all transport either directly in one of our 4WDs, with our transport partner, Pehicle, or with reputable local taxis. Be prepared for a bumpy ride as we can soon leave tar-sealed roads behind! Our vehicles carry our supplies and all your luggage, so you only need to walk with your daypack.

Accommodation

On our treks your accommodation is provided in the villages. It can be basic, but it is always welcoming. There are flush toilets at all stopovers, and cold-water showers.

Packing List

Unsure what you’ll need? Check out our packing list. We’ll also provide you with more information about what to expect and bring before your trip. And, no need to worry about heavy loads. You only walk with your day-pack. Everything else will be waiting for you when you reach each day’s destination.

Frequently Asked Questions

Not sure if you’re fit enough, want to know about water, then take look at our FAQs. If your questions aren’t answered then please use the enquiry form or email [email protected] .

Terms & Conditions

Please take a read of our terms and conditions to find out about our bookings and cancellation policy, insurance, and more.

What people say

This was by far one of the best things I have done so far in Fiji. The beauty of the interior is without words, and the time and thought spent in finding ethical and meaningful ways for people to share in that experience is wonderful. Truly great.

Tim Lafond, Australia

Loved my hiking with Talanoa Treks. Fantastic scenery, local guides with stories from the past and great company from fellow visiting hikers. Hiking through the highlands and stopping to eat and sleep at local villages was a great experience. I also learned a bit more about Fiji culture and was able to show my respect when visiting villages during the remainder of my stay in Fiji. To top it off, Talanoa Treks is also focused on sustainable development of the communities they work with to provide this unique experience. It was a good fit with my values so I’m happy to recommend them to others.

Martin Pritchard, Melbourne Australia

Had a great time, loved the Nabalesere waterfall, Stonebowl Lodge, the amazing walk and the village stay. Thanks for organising it so smoothly and accommodating our ideas. Truly a wonderful experience.

Elise Remling, Sweden

Thanks for a fantastic day away from the stresses of Suva. Well worth the time and money, and I was perfectly happy with my day in every way.. looking forward to signing up for more adventures…

The most incredible hikes in Fiji: rainforests, waterfalls and deserted beaches

A mother and two kids run along the beach while laughing together in Fiji

Hiking trails in Fiji like Lavena Coastal Walk lead to empty beaches that can only be reached by foot © jhorrocks / Getty Images

Is Fiji good for hiking? In a word, yes. From strolling along a volcanic coastline to tiptoeing around tree roots up a cloud-topped mountain, this South Pacific island nation  is a hiker’s heaven. Think waterfalls flowing into natural pools, empty beaches best reached on foot, vibrant birdlife and views that stretch all the way to the horizon.

While you’ll need to watch where you step, hiking in Fiji is very safe overall. There are no dangerous snakes, spiders or mammals on the trails, with the only major pest being mosquitoes. As you prepare for a trek that might take place under full sun or during rain showers on any given day, packing both sun protection and a lightweight rain jacket is wise.

Before you hit the trails, note that many of the most scenic trails in Fiji are best done with a guide. If do plan to trek on your own, ensure the trail doesn’t cut through a village. If it does, be sure to pack a gift ( sevusevu ) like kava before asking for permission to explore. Here's our round-up of the best hikes in Fiji.

Lavena Coastal Walk

Best coastal hike.

1okm (6.2 miles) round trip; 4–5 hours; easy

A leisurely path that weaves along Taveuni ’s volcanic coastline, the Lavena Coastal Walk is one of the most scenic and varied hikes in Fiji, with a totally different segment seemingly around every curve. Beaches change from sugar white to ash grey, while a few creek crossings and villages along the way add excitement. Fragrant fruit trees, bold bright flowers and leaves that look like elephant ears line the trail. Finally, the path cedes to a freshwater pool fed by waterfalls. While the first chute is immediately visible, a swim beyond a rock corridor reveals Lavena’s hidden waterfall. During high tide, it’s possible to take a boat ride back to the trailhead, halving the time, distance and effort needed for the round trip.

A hiker stops on a rocky stretch of a trail with pink flowers in the foreground at Koroyanitu National Heritage Park, Fiji

Mount Batilamu

Best hike for views.

12km (7.5 miles) round trip; 5–6 hours; moderate

A proud part of Viti Levu’s dramatic, Jurassic Park–like coastline is Mount Batilamu, one of the highest mountain peaks in Fiji. Tufts of clouds linger over the mountaintops, casting shadows on the grasslands below. In Koroyanitu National Heritage Park , hikers can trek to the top of Mount Batilamu with or without a guide, as rolling grasslands lead to creek crossings and up to the expansive limestone face.

On a clear day, you’ll catch views that span to the Mamanuca and Yasawa Islands as you spot birds like honeyeaters, warblers, golden whistlers and Polynesian starlings. If you’re all tuckered out, spend the night in a basic lodge atop the mountain for stargazing without the haze of city lights.

Viti Levu Cross-Island Hike

Best multiday hike.

17+km (10+ miles ); 3  days; moderate to hard

For Fiji’s most immersive hiking adventure, venture on a three-day trek across Viti Levu , the country’s largest island. Talanoa Treks  offers a guided hike through the villages of Naga and Nubutautau, on which you’ll spend each night in a village as you learn about Fijian culture through food and warm hospitality. Treks lead through grasslands, lush forests, along streams, and to waterfalls, including the impressive Nabalesere cascade. Expect to scramble across rocky crags, through mud puddles and across creek beds during vigorous days. (Don’t wear shoes you’re too attached to.)

Expect deep expertise from your leader, as Fijian guides know these mountains better than anyone. Joji Tamani, one of Fiji’s most experienced hikers, helped set the course for Eco Challenge Fiji: The World’s Toughest Race.

A woman stands in the water facing a tall waterfall surrounded by lush foliage

Tavoro Falls (Bouma Falls)

Best hike for waterfalls.

7km (4.3 miles) round trip; 3–4 hours; easy to moderate

On Taveuni , Fiji’s appropriately nicknamed Garden Island, you’ll discover a trio of impressive mist-making waterfalls in Bouma National Heritage Park . The first and tallest of them,  Tavoro Falls  is reached via a flat 10-minute walk along a manicured pathway. This makes the swimming hole ideal for young families or travelers not comfortable with steep climbs but who might still enjoy jumping off a ledge behind the curtain into the cool pool below. Further waterfalls in the park involve a trek up a steep and oftentimes slick path across a stream and into a hardwood forest. Yet views of Taveuni’s coastline and palm tree groves from the trail make even the most exhausted hikers feel inspired.

Mount Tomanivi

Best hike for serious heights.

4.5km (2.8 miles) round trip; 5 hours; hard

In search of superlatives? Then hiking to the top of Fiji’s highest mountain at 1324m (4343ft) is a must. Get a guide for this journey, and you’ll be led up a steep trail along Mount Tomanivi’s ridge, keeping hands free and feet nimble, as exposed vines and roots can be the key to staying stable or causing a stumble. Once you make it to the top, views stretch out to the neighboring islands and mountains beyond – and make jaws drop.

A man and woman walking along a path through the Suva rainforest in Fiji with a river flowing next to them

Mount Korobaba

Best hike near suva.

5.6km (3.4 miles) round trip; 3 hours; hard

One of the most popular hikes for residents of Fiji’s capital city (though less so than Colo-I-Suva ), the Mount Korobaba trail is a mud path that cuts through a tropical forest as well as occasional patches of root crops like dalo and cassava. The entrance to the trailhead can be a challenge to find, as it’s tucked behind an intimidating cement factory; if you’re lucky, a local will point you in the right direction. Once underway, you can find your way to the top to admire all of Suva – but only venture on this hike under a sunny sky. A rain cloud will kill the view and turn the trail into peanut butter.

Vuaqava Saltwater Lake

Best remote hike.

5km (3 miles) round trip; 3 hours; easy

The island of Vuaqava in Fiji’s remote Lau archipelago was abandoned during a cholera outbreak in the last century and is no longer inhabited. It’s now only accessible by private boat or as part of a trip on board Captain Cook Cruises ’ MV Reef Endeavour small-ship cruise. The trail begins at a sugar-sand beach with a thriving coral reef just a few fin kicks away. It leads into dense forest, where gargantuan coconut crabs can be spotted crushing the fruit with their giant claws. The end of the trail leads to a mile-wide, saltwater lake. Geologists are still scratching their heads over how this sparkling marvel came to be.

Vatalutu Trail

Best hike for remote beaches.

8.9km (5.5 miles) round trip; 4–5 hours; moderate

You’ll feel as though you’re on a desert island adventure by trekking across Vatalutu Island, one of the islands of Kadavu . The trail starts at the beach and weaves through lush rainforest before opening out to an untouched beach. Bring along a mask, snorkel, and swimwear, as a dip among the among rays, reef sharks, and sea turtles around Great Astrolabe Reef is a deserved reward after hours of effort.

Suva Sea Wall

Best walk for culture and best accessible route.

5km (3.1 miles) one way; 2 hours; easy

Go on a self-guided walking tour of the Suva Sea Wall to see some of the capital’s historical and natural highlights. The walk begins at the colonial-era Grand Pacific Hotel and loops around Albert Park , passing the Government Building. Next, you’ll take a wander through Fiji Museum and Thurston Gardens before crossing over to the sea wall sidewalk and admiring the State House of Fiji. Walk along the sea wall to My Suva Park. In the evenings, this route is popular with locals squeezing in exercise around dinner. If you prefer your walking only one way, taxis are easy to flag down on either end, costing around FJD$6 (US$2.80) to return.

Eating and drinking.

Being an island in the South Pacific region, seafood plays a big part in the local cuisine. Locally grown produce mainly consists of root vegetables and tropical fruits. Coconut is a key ingredient across many dishes and Indo-Fijian influences are evident in cooking across the archipelago.

Foods to try in Fiji

Think of this as a Fijian-style ceviche. The dish uses raw fish soaked in lemon or lime juice and is served with a combination of onions, chilies, peppers and tomatoes.

2. Fijian curry

Indian influences are evident in the cuisine with a variety of curries seen all over the islands. They're typically made with coconut milk, tomatoes and a combination of local fruit and vegetables such as plantain. Curries are served with roti or dahl.

This traditional Fijian dish is made from taro leaves that are cooked or stewed in coconut milk. It's often served on the side with freshly cooked fish.

Lovo is a traditional style of cooking similar to  New Zealand ’s hangi. Meats and vegetables are wrapped in banana leaves and buried in a hole to cook for several hours over coals.

If you like seafood, you may be tempted to try the local delicacy of cawaki, or sea urchin. It's popular in coastal towns and villages but you'll also find them in city markets. They can be eaten raw or cooked.

6. Palusami

This dish comprises parcels of corned beef, onion, garlic and coconut cream wrapped and steamed in taro leaves. Other South Pacific nations like Samoa have their own take on this dish.

Culture and customs

Fijians are known for their welcoming hospitality and truly live up to this reputation. Interactions are met with a smile and curiosity is the norm, making you feel like an honored guest in the most far-reaching places of the islands.

Fiji’s population is made up of a rich cultural mix of native Fijians at around 57 percent and Indo-Fijians make up 37 percent of the population. This means the archipelago is a blend of Melanesian and Indian influences. Indigenous Fijians maintain both traditional cultural practices and strong Christian values with more than half identifying to the faith.

Approximately 34 percent of the Indian-Fijian community is Hindu and 7 percent practice Islam. One of the most noticeable cultural practices is the act of drinking kava (yanggona) which is consumed as part of ceremonies as well as being a welcoming gesture to guests in communities.

Festivals and events in Fiji

Hibiscus festival.

A nine-day event held in Suva on the main island of Viti Levu each August. The Hibiscus Festival has been running for more than 50 years and is a community celebration bringing together traditional music, food stalls and the crowning of the ‘Hibiscus Queen’ (as part of the island’s beauty pageant).

Bula Festival

Much like the Hibiscus Festival, this event is held in Nadi on the western side of Viti Levu and goes on for a week. The word ‘bula’ means ‘welcome’ or ‘hello’ and is a common gesture of greeting used in most parts of Fiji. Authentic Fijian cuisine is served up as part of the event and visitors are encouraged to join the festivities.

South Indian Fire Walking Festival

This extraordinary spectacle is held between July and August. The event attracts large numbers from the local Hindu community to Suva Point. The ceremony involves Hindu priests and devotees piercing the tongue and cheeks before walking across hot coals. The event signifies the end of 10 days of abstinence to worship the goddess Maha Devi.

Lautoka Sugar Festival

Lautoka is known as the sugar capital of Fiji, situated on the west coast of Viti Levu, it’s the second biggest city (after Suva). Sugar cane holds large economic value for the country. The festival is held over a week in September and is another community celebration that brings in locals from throughout the islands to take part.

Geography and environment

Fiji is an archipelago in the South Pacific scattered with around 300 islands and 540 islets. The country is approximately a five hours’ flight from the east coast of Australia. The interior of the main island is made up of thick jungle terrain, bursting with waterfalls and large winding rivers. The rich volcanic soil creates an ideal environment to grow crops of coconuts, ginger, kava, bananas, cassava and breadfruit. More than half of Fiji’s population live in major towns along the coast, either in Suva, Lautoka and Nadi on the island of Viti Levu.

Best time to visit

Thanks to its tropical climate, Fiji is a year-round destination with warm temperatures (it rarely dips below 20°C) and plenty of sunshine throughout the year. That said, the best time to visit for optimal weather – think blue skies and little rain – is during the dry season which runs from May to October. Traveling in the shoulder months is also a good option as the weather isn't too wet and there aren't as many tourists.

The monsoon season runs from November to April, and while this is considered to be the off-season, it's a great time to explore without big crowds (excluding the festive season which sees a spike in tourists). Just bear in mind that the weather is hot and humid, and torrential (but brief) downpours are common. There’s also the possibility of cyclones.

Learn more about the best time to visit Fiji

Many resorts in Fiji have onsite gift and souvenir shops, but we recommend heading to a local market to peruse the stalls and get to know the locals. They're a great place to find handmade art and crafts, traditional food and general souvenirs.

It's a good idea to check with your local customs officials to ensure that you are permitted to bring certain items into your home country. Australia and New Zealand generally have strict quarantine laws.

Here are some items you may like to buy in Fiji:

1. Coconut shells

From smooth and polished serving bowls to elaborately painted decorations, coconut shells have many purposes!

2. Tapa cloth

Tapa is a traditional Fijian textile painting on barkcloth from the mulberry tree. All materials are organic, including the dyes which are extracted from plants, herbs and charcoal.

Fijian pearls are known around the world for their rare colors and beauty. Why not take a slice of paradise home with you and treat yourself, or buy some jewelry for someone special.

4. Bula shirt

Who doesn't love a brightly colored shirt? Bula shirts are a clothing staple for men in Fiji and the wider South Pacific. They're fun, versatile and will lift your spirits if you're feeling those post-holiday blues.

New Walking Tour of Suva by Peter Sipeli

Guided Walks –a walking tour of Suva, is a new endeavor created by Fijian Poet, Peter Sipeli.

He created it with a strong belief that Fiji needed to provide more depth and knowledge about its contemporary spaces and culture as opposed to traditional Fiji Tourism which is too often focused on sun, sea and sand.

Suva is a city he grew up in and is passionate about. Guided Walks is a two and half hour walk through the city , with 14 landmark stops. The concept of Guided Walks is to not only look at what Peter calls “history of place” but to embed it with his having lived what he calls “Suva – Fijian realities”.

Peter says it’s a “decolonized approach to seeing a city space”.

What does “decolonized approach” mean exactly?

fiji walking tours

He told me that he wishes to “reflect on the effects of colonial empire to the modern Fijian experience.” Says Peter, “I use this same approach, to tell our story that includes indigenous and other racial minorities histories and experience.”

He also weaves social, cultural and economic factors that have contributed to the city’s development into personal narratives, stories and insights. In doing so, Peter doesn’t shy from the realities of modern Fijian life and says his city “has changed due to political upheavals.”

His mission is to offer some insight into how locals truly live, how Fijians navigate the city, how the city has changed (due to local and geopolitics) and shifting climatic conditions.

Peter is also developing a kids package that will be available shortly. He’s also creating a Levuka day trip and visits to Naililili in Rewa, one of the oldest churches in Fiji.

Price per person for Guided Walks is $40.

You can visit his Facebook page to book a tour or  email [email protected]  or find him on WhatsApp — 679 789 2918.

To be fair our expectations was high upon arrival. We had heard a lot about kiwi-experience that runs through New Zealand, for example that you meet a lot of people to travel with, get discounts on activities and get to meet locals who gives you local tips ;). We started on Robinson Crusoe island which is standard, we got picked up at our hostel by a taxi and apparently it was just me, my boy friend and another luckily very kind lady. However when we arrived to the island and checked in, our itinerary said we had to pay 70$ per person for a meal plan which turned out to be 84$ per person. I called Feeje experience and all they said was that they hadn't updated the itinerary (or the website) in a while... This was only one of many things that apparently was "wrong" in the itinerary. We felt a little bit fooled since we booked the tour expecting the schedule that was publiced on the website to be correct. Unfortunately more thing has been excluded than just changed to other activities. Overall we found the tour to be very overpriced likewise we're the dinner we were expected to buy at the resorts we stayed at. Luckily our guides understood us and made a few stop for us to buy food at other places. Without our tour guide and our driver the tour wouldn't have been much. Those two really did a good job.

Once back to our farm house enjoy the camp fire, enjoying your drink, dancing, looking at the stars and a hearty yummy meals.Go ahead and dare to take a Night walk on the wild side-it’s a Jungle experience you will never forget.A not to be missed tour. You need to bring your Camera, bug repellent, boots/shoes

Never did this before and it was great. Welcomed with native songs. Then they bring a big container with the mud in it that you wipe over your body (you are not going into a pool to put the mud on and the mud was very smooth). After you walk around and let it dry... and get pictures you go into a pool of dirty water where you wash most if it off (there is about a foot of mud in the bottom of that pool). Then you go over to a very warm spring pool where they help hose off the remaining mud before getting in that pool. Very refreshing. Then they have mats to lie on and get a massage and then some fruit. A really nice experience

Cruise Blue Fiji

A lite walking tour, november 11-18, 2022 • 8 days • $3675*.

Join us for a luxurious cruise on our 66 passenger ship, as we visit the intimate palm-covered Mamanuca Islands, sail to the majestic southern Yasawa Islands and relax in the idyllic Blue Lagoon, framed by picture-perfect beaches.

*Including automatic upgrades from Hibiscus category to Orchid category! See below for ship details.

This tour is now full and accepting standby requests (contact us by email [email protected] ).

Our first ever cruise in the islands of the South Pacific takes place in the magical archipelago of Fiji!

While the Fijian islands number well over 300, our adventure focuses on three island groups – the Mamanuca, Sacred, and Yasawa Islands – situated just northwest of the main island of Viti Levu.

We cruise aboard a small ship – only 68 berths – giving us optimal access to drop-dead-gorgeous coves and islands. Our ship is large enough to pack in luxurious amenities but small enough to tie off to a palm tree! Daily shore excursions take us to world famous beach sites seen on the Big Screen and the Small Screen; we see settings for three well-known shows – Blue Lagoon, with Brooke Shields, Castaway, with Tom Hanks, and the TV reality show, Survivor. The themes of our trip, however, are tasting paradise from our delightful little ship, connecting with the warm-hearted Fijian people, relishing the remote grandeur of a secluded set of South Sea islands, and participating in world class water and beach activities.

FIJI Princess

Our ship – the M.V. Fiji Princess

  • Launched in 1997 and renovated in 2014 the Fiji Princess is ideal for cruising the magnificent Mamanuca Islands, Sacred Islands, and Yasawa Islands. Featuring 4 decks, she holds a maximum of only 66 passengers serviced by a warm and hospitable Fijian crew of 28.
  • All cabins are outward facing with two twin or one queen-sized beds, small yacht style bathroom with separate shower, hair dryer, mini-safe, flat screen TV for in-house movies and closet space.
  • Public areas are open-air, reflecting the tropical ambiance with a single-seating, open-air restaurant on the Main deck, a tropical themed bar on the Middle deck, and a second bar on the partially covered Sun deck. Plenty of lounge chairs complement the small dipping pool.
  • Kayaks are available for the more adventurous.
  • The Fiji Princess is committed to be free of single-use plastic. Each traveler receives a free reusable water bottle that is refillable at artisan filtered mineral water stations throughout the ship – water is free!
  • As would be expected in the South Pacific, the on-board atmosphere is casual and informal.

  • Two cabin categories are available on the ship, Hibiscus and Orchid, but our booking includes a complementary upgrade to the Orchid category (a value of over $400 per person).

  • Cabin come with a premium stocked mini bar with soft drinks, French sparkling wine, premium Fijian chocolate, and snacks, restocked daily!
  • Accommodation for 7 nights in all outside facing cabins aboard our 66-passenger ship, the M.V. Fiji Princess, small enough to tie off on a coconut tree!

  • Daily mid-day and afternoon refreshments (tea/lemonade/snacks/cakes) while at sail

  • Fees for two IVV walking stamps for those collecting IVV walk credit (note: this is walking-lite trip – WAI guides have not conducted on site research and the ruggedness of the Fijian Islands we visit is not conducive to long walks – distances are likely to range between 1 and 3 km)
  • WAI guide service throughout
  • Tips for off-ship experiences ( tips for on-ship personnel not included )
  • Pricing is based on double occupancy only. Due to the limitation of cabins, no single accommodations are available. WAI provides a roommate matching service

Anchorage: Modriki Island Possible walk on Modriki Island

After your early morning arrival in Fiji, the first part of the day is free. Our floating hotel for the next 7 nights, the Fiji Princess, is available for boarding at Port Denarau between 1:30 and 2:30 pm. The taxi ride from Nadi Airport into town is about 10 minutes, and from Nadi to Port Denarau is about 15 minutes.

Travelers who join us for the Optional Flight & Pre-night Hotel Package have this morning free to enjoy a preview of Fijian paradise from our 5-star beach resort. Have a leisurely breakfast, stroll the beach, or relax by the pool before a short transfer to the ship in the early afternoon.

Mid-afternoon, we set sail for the outer Mamanucas. Enroute, settle into your cabin, enjoy a welcome cruise briefing along with English tea and snacks, meet fellow guests and admire the scenery that slides by as we cruise. Our first destination is gorgeous, secluded Modriki Island, filming location for Tom Hanks’ movie “Cast Away”. On arrival, we explore this little island and have our first chance to take a dip in the warm South Pacific waters. Back on board, cocktails are served with canapés on the sun deck. Mingle with fellow travelers and drink in views over tranquil waters as the sun sets. This evening, the Captain’s Welcome Dinner is an à la carte menu with entertainment provided by our crew! Don’t forget to wander up to the upper deck to see the magnificent array of stars of the Southern Constellations.

B* – Breakfast for early arrivals only.

Anchorage: Soso Bay Possible walk on Naviti Island

Awake to the aroma of freshly brewed coffee and consider a morning swim or stroll on the beach before we set sail for the southern Yasawa Islands during breakfast. Late morning, we take you on a bit of an adventure… we depart for a special reef location where you are invited to swim with reef sharks (sea conditions permitting)! While harmless to humans, reef sharks make for an amazing snorkel experience! Back on-board, we cruise into the waters around Naviti and Soso Bay. A tasty buffet lunch is served on-board before heading ashore for a visit to the chiefly village of Soso. We’ll be welcomed in traditional fashion with a “yaqona” kava ceremony, before exploring this typical Fijian island village with our hosts. Later this afternoon, a presentation on the local history and legends gives insight into early Yasawan life. Back on the Fiji Princess, ease into the evening with cocktails served on the sun deck, followed by a ‘Thali’ buffet dinner featuring exquisite Indian dishes. After dinner, those with energy remaining are welcome to take in a ‘Bollywood Dancing’ lesson on the sun deck!

Anchorage: Naukacuvu Island

Sunday is still a day of rest in Fiji and this morning we have the unique opportunity to attend a village church service, and learn more of the wonderful people of Fiji. Lunch is served on board as we cruise a short distance to our next slice of paradise. As we cruise, you are invited to join a Fijian cooking lesson and help prepare a tasty Fijian fish-dish, “Kokoda”.

This afternoon we anchor in the sheltered waters of Naukacuvu and Narara Islands, picture-perfect for a lazy afternoon. Sunbathe on the Fiji Princess or dive into the waters and discover the amazing colorful underwater world below. Tonight’s buffet dinner has a range of dishes from Fiji as well as a selection of European favorites.

Anchorage: Yalobi Bay

In the morning, join the crew for a finger fishing trip or snorkel, swim or kayak before we depart to one of Fiji’s most beautiful and remote island groups – the Sacred Islands.* Filming location for the popular “Survivor” series, the Sacred Islands provide a breathtaking backdrop for swimming, snorkeling, and kayaking, especially since we expect to be the only ones there! A beachside picnic lunch is provided by your crew along with afternoon scones and tea. Back on board it’s happy hour at the bar followed by another festive Captain’s dinner.

*Depending on seasonal weather conditions, an alternate stop may replace the Sacred Islands.

Anchorage: Blue Lagoon Possible walk on Nanuya Lailai

Laze on the sun deck as we sail on to the famed Blue Lagoon. This superb stretch of water is circled by islands, creating a lagoon that is filled with fascinating coral reefs easily seen from the surface of the crystal-clear waters. One of those islands, Nanuya Lailai, is home to our private beach. Lunch is served on-board, whilst on shore our private ‘Fiji style beach club’ awaits, with sun loungers, onshore massage, a bar and beach volleyball.

You’ll have plenty of time for swimming, snorkeling, fish feeding, viewing coral from the glass bottom boat or just wandering along a secluded stretch of beach. Our ship’s crew will teach basket weaving and give a coconut demonstration – how to climb the palm tree, collect the coconuts and husk them, then enjoy fresh coconut milk straight from the coconut along with afternoon tea.

Diving for both novices and experienced divers can be pre-booked for this location or you can join our crew for a guided ‘reef safari’ snorkeling tour! Happy hour is served on shore from our beach bar along with canapes followed by the unveiling of a traditional Lovo meal where the food is cooked underground in a specially prepared pit. Our dining room tonight is on the beach beneath coconut palms and tropical stars from the southern constellations. The day ends with a “Meke” show featuring singing, dancing and story-telling by a group of local villagers.

Anchorage: Sawa-i-Lau Island Guided cross-island walk to Lo’s Tea Shop Possible walk in Tamusua village

This morning is at leisure at our private Blue Lagoon beach. Dive, snorkel and swim, try your hand at basket weaving, or join our Cruise Manager for a leisurely hike along the beach and up over the hill to the other side of the island. We’ll marvel at panoramas across the Blue Lagoon before arriving to the ‘very local’ Lo’s Tea Shop on the beach! Enjoy Lo’s famous cakes and browse the shell market prior to returning to the ship via our water taxis. During lunch, we sail to our next destination, the island of Sawa-i-Lau, where the 1980 Blue Lagoon movie starring Brooke Shields was filmed. Here, we visit the subterranean pools of the Sawa-i-Lau Caverns. View the dramatic caverns from the stairs or take to the water on a short swim through an underwater passage to the second of these stunning limestone caves! This evening, cross the bay for a memorable visit to the village of Tamusua. A kava ceremony, a guided walk around the village, and an authentic Fijian village style ‘feast’ prepared and cooked by the locals awaits. The Fijian meal is served to us as we sit upon mats and listen to our hosts share more about their village culture.

Anchorage: Drawaqa Island

Fiji Princess sails south out of the bay, this morning, bound for Drawaqa Island. On arrival, a marine biologist joins us to tell about local marine life and the conservation work of the Vinaka Fiji Volunteers. A guided ‘Reef Safari’ snorkeling tour is conducted to see the prolific corals, clams and marine life in this area. Non-swimmers are invited for a visit to a local village school (when in session) or, for a truly exhilarating experience, have a go at abseiling! Our farewell dinner this evening is a barbecue served on the upper deck dining under the stars, where a final feast is the perfect way to celebrate our time in the Yasawa Islands! The bar is open as our resident DJ, ‘Fiji Afro Jack’, spins the tunes on the upper deck. Try your hand at the “Bula Bula” dance, if you haven’t already, or simply enjoy the grandeur of the southern night sky one last time!

Enjoy a final breakfast on-board as the Fiji Princess cruises back toward her home port. We’ll be fare-welled with the traditional Isa Lei song from the crew as our exploration of the beautiful Mamanuca, Yasawa, and Sacred islands comes to an end.

Late morning, we disembark the Fiji Princess. Flights are typically later in the evening so the middle part of the day is free to explore more of Nadi before taking a taxi to the airport (included for those on the Flight & Pre-night package).

Malamala Beach Club Excursion: Malamala claims to be the world’s first island beach club, and offers a final opportunity to imbibe Fijian paradise on an almost perfectly circular island small enough to stroll the circumference in 20 minutes yet large enough to feel like your own slice of South Pacific bliss. Amenities include pristine white sand beaches, crystal clear snorkeling waters, beachside cabanas, a resort-style infinity pool, and non-motorized water sports equipment and snorkel gear (additional amenities are available for purchase onsite). Estimated price: $90 (included for travelers who purchased the Flight and Pre-night Hotel Package)

Later this evening, we transfer to the Nadi Airport for our return flight (included for those on the Flight & Pre-night package) across the International Date Line, arriving in Los Angeles on November 20th, (technically, before we even leave Nadi)!

No group activities are schedule for this morning. Following breakfast, travelers are free to batch together in taxis for the 10 minute ride to the airport. With reluctance we leave this storied green archipelago, eager to return and continue the exploration in an Atlantic setting seemingly forgotten by time.

A Remotely Planned tour is an itinerary for which WAI staff has not conduct on-site planning. Our Classic Curated tour, by contrast, involves an extensive on-site planning trip that is cost, labor, and time intense. It is our preferred way to prepare an Adventure because we are self-confessed control freaks, and because we know that there is no substitute for “being there”.

Occasionally, however, opportunities arise to offer a destination without on-site planning. Doing so allows us to offer the tour sooner than would be possible if we wait until we can send a team for on-site planning.

In addition, some destinations, like a Fiji cruise, offer an itinerary that is more self-contained and does not require as much point to point decision-making.

Finally, some destinations offer us better than average connections with on-the-ground suppliers, giving us acceptable levels of confidences in the services offered without the need for site inspections.

The official start and finish point for this adventure is Port Denarau, embarkation and disembarkation point for the M.V. Fiji Princess. Travelers booking their own air should arrive into Nadi, Fiji (airport code NAN).

We are currently working on a menu of pre-cruise services to help start our Fijian cruise well. These service may include: a group flight, a pre-night hotel in Fiji, and airport-hotel-ship transfers.

For those not participating in the pre-cruise services, more details about flight arrangements and travel agent contact information will be provided by email after you register for the Adventure. Please do not book your airfare prior to receiving these flight details from us !

Our cruise in the Fijian islands is a new WAI concept that focuses on South Sea delights and cultural interactions with Fijians and deemphasizes the role of walking. This experience appeared on our tour planning radar as a late opportunity for the 2022 schedule and WAI planners have not crafted this trip with our normal on-the-ground scouting and walk-planning tour. While the emphasis is not as strongly on walking, WAI guides and planners have been and will continue to research walk opportunities with ship staff. We have possibilities in mind, but it is fair to say that individual walks will be fewer, and shorter than the typical 5-10 km, and we will not know for sure how much walking we will do until we are on the cruise. WAI will request two IVV walk stamps for those who track their walks in AVA/IVV books.

WAI believes strongly in the importance of travel insurance for financial and medical protection from any number of unforeseen circumstances that can arise before departure or during your Adventure. This is now especially true in the era of COVID-19, which is typically treated like any other illness for travel insurance purposes. Many travel insurance providers are available for you to consider. Laura Pfahler and Sharon Mitchell of World Travel Inc. are travel agents who provides air travel and insurance services to many WAI travelers.

  • Laura Pfahler: 503-434-6401 or  [email protected]
  • Sharon Mitchell: 971-261-2091 or  [email protected]

Check out  Insurance Tips  from World Travel for a short introduction to travel insurance. (NOTE: WAI receives no commission or financial remuneration from World Travel Inc.).

As always, do some shopping to ensure you are getting the best value. Using the  squaremouth.com  website can be a good way to compare pricing.

Other options include:

  • Travel Guard
  • Travel Insured International

NOTE: We suggest purchasing from a reputable, well-established insurance company (avoid buying insurance from an unknown company found only online). Travelers interested in purchasing “cancel for any reason” insurance coverage should be careful to check pricing and terms BEFORE they register for a tour. Recent changes in the international travel landscape has caused changes in the policies of some insurance companies, and made the purchase of this particular type of policy even more time-sensitive.

Walking Adventures International reserves the right to cancel any tour departure with fewer than 15 participants, in which case registered participants will receive a 100% refund of payments received.

This refund policy contains one exclusion related to the COVID-19 outbreak. Many suppliers require non-refundable deposits as a condition of booking services. Unforeseen circumstances linked to the virus can force us to cancel a tour. Due to these supplier’s non-refundable policies, WAI intends to retrieve as much of these deposits as possible, but cannot guarantee a 100% refund.

In cases where full refunds cannot be obtained for a cancelled tour, we will do our best to transfer unrefunded money as traveler credits to be applied to a future tour to that destination.

View our full  General Tour Conditions for more details.

As Fiji is a developing country, please check with your doctor or visit a travel clinic (recommended) to inquire about immunizations recommended for travelers.

In terms of COVID-19, everyone traveling to Fiji must be fully vaccinated. In addition, a COVID test must be taken before we board the ship at a cost (not included) of about $20. Current restrictions require that time in Fiji before boarding the ship must be spent at a certified hotel or in the care of a certified tour operator. Prior to departure, travelers will need another COVID test to comply with USA entry requirements.

Masks are required indoors but most of our activities, including dining and public spaces, are outdoors on the ship.

Participation in this Fiji Cruise Adventure requires compliance with current vaccine requirements.

The Our Approach to Fun but Prudent Travel document identifies and explains Covid-19 mitigation policies and procedures WAI is using as a starting point for 2022 tours. Because the knowledge base about COVID-19 changes daily, we review these policies and procedures on an ongoing basis, and will, of course, notify travelers on tour of updates as we approach the departure date of your tour.

During this age of COVID-19, WAI evaluates worldwide reports and conditions on an ongoing basis. Please read our COVID-19 Policies and Procedures document before signing the COVID-19 Travel Waiver . Participation in this tour requires your signature on the COVID-19 Travel Waiver .

Upon registering for this Adventure, you will receive a welcome letter and initial invoice.

An Adventure Advice email with critical information on booking your flights will be sent soon after registration, as well as important steps to take in the months before your trip. Please do not buy your airline tickets until you review the Adventure Advice email .

Mid-April you will receive a statement reminder for the second deposit of $300 due May 1, 2022. By July 1, you will receive a statement reminder for the final balance due. All payments are non-refundable at the time of payment.

About 2-3 weeks before departure, you will receive a final packet with all the details of the program, including hotel name and contact information, a list of fellow travelers, and a more detailed daily schedule.

5 Best Walks in Suva

Walks and hikes in suva.

Suva might be the urban centre of Fiji, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t anywhere to stretch your legs. Aside from exploring the city attractions on foot, Suva is home to the Colo-i-Suva Forest Park and a fantastic hike up Mt Korobaba. Otherwise, the city’s parks and recreational areas make excellent places to stretch your legs. Check out some of our top recommendations in this list of the best walks in Suva.

While you’re here, you might also be interested in 10 Must-Dos in Suva .

1. Colo-i-Suva Forest Park Walks

One of the best areas for walking in Suva is the Colo-i-Suva Forest Park . Suva’s own backyard rainforest oasis features 6.5km (4 miles) of walking trails taking walkers to various streams and waterfalls. Follow the trail to Waisila Falls or the swimming holes of the Upper Pool and Lower Pool . The park is located along the Princes Road, some 10km (6 miles) from Suva. Guided walks of the Colo-i-Suva Forest Park are also available with Kay Services Tour (more info on Viator  and  Tripadvisor ) . See more excursions like this in The Best Day Trips from Suva .

2. Mt Korobaba Hike

One of Suva’s only real “hikes”, Mt Korobaba offers sensational views from the top! Starting behind the cement works in Lami, a rough walking trail leads up through lush forest to a viewpoint. At the top of Suva’ highest peak, you’ll be rewarded with 360-degree views of the city, coast and beyond. The hike takes approximately 3-hours return and has some steep and slippery sections, so walking shoes are a must! See more features like this in 10 Free & Cheap Things to Do in Suva .

3. City Walking Tour

Suva is a pretty compact city, so seeing the sights on foot is a great way to spend half a day. A self-guided tour of the city is available by picking up “ The Suva Walking Guide ” from the Suva City Council. It points out the main attractions to hit on a loop that will take two to four hours to complete fully. Attractions around the city you will see include the Parliament House , the Government House , the Fiji Museum , the Suva Market , Holland Street and much more! Learn more about the sights in The Guide to Suva on a Budget .

4. City Park Walks

When looking for a place to stroll, Suva has several options in its array of parks. One of the most popular city-centre areas is Albert Park with vast greens to walk around and watch locals play cricket or rugby. Thurston Garden next to Albert Park is a must-visit with short walking trails among tropical trees and flowers. Ratu Skuna Park , My Suva Park and Umaria Park are more great options.

5. Mt Tomanivi Hike

While not officially in Suva, Talanoa Treks offers full-day and overnight hikes to Fiji’s highest mountain, Mt Tomanivi . After transport from Suva and a 4WD excursion, you’ll get to the base of the mountain with a steep climb through the forest. At the top, epic views await if the weather is clear! The tour also includes lunch at a Fijian village, as well as afternoon tea. See more hikes available with Talanoa Treks in the 9 Best Walks on the Suncoast .
