Show Review: Flogging Molly’s Salty Dog Cruise
- April 27, 2017

“Setting sail on the high seas with punk rock’s finest scallywags!” | By Jon Coen
It’s Friday night, and NOFX just took the stage, minus founding member and rhythm guitarist Eric Melvin. In his place is Roger Lima, Less Than Jake’s bassist. “Of all the people who could have played guitar this weekend, we chose Roger, because he’s got dreadlocks,” frontman Fat Mike announces to the crowd. It’s his first time not having Melvin on his left since the band formed in ‘83.
The Orpheum Theatre is an odd venue, with lounge couches in the back and full theater-style seating without any kind of pit area. But odd setups and missing axemen aren’t even the strangest thing about this show—it’s happening on a boat in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean.
It’s Flogging Molly ’s annual sea-bound sojourn through The Bahamas, better known as The Salty Dog Cruise, packed with their favorite bands and 2,500 other scurvy rats.
[envira-gallery id=”225858″]
Earlier, esteemed headliners Flogging Molly—led by legendary frontman Dave King—welcomed everyone onboard the MS Enchantment of the Seas with a rowdy show on the pool deck. It doesn’t take Fat Mike long to insult his host. “I was just up in Dave King’s suite,” he tells the crowd. “He actually has a piano and a leprechaun up there.”
Flogging Molly are a professional outfit with classically trained musicians, a gifted violin player, and roots in world music. NOFX can’t remember where they left their drinks. One must wonder how that crack is going to go over?
Even three years in, the event is still a novelty. A cruise might seem to be the most mindless form of travel—a cultureless packaged experience for pleated-pant tourists shuffling to Jimmy Buffett—and possibly the least punk way to spend a weekend. But each year, the floating fest features artists that tell a story of musical heritage.
“If you know your history, it’s fascinating. How the cultures all thread together is important to me,” says Flogging Molly bassist Nathen Maxwell, who takes pride in curating the ship’s lineup each year. “Ska evolved into rocksteady, which evolved into reggae, which evolved into dancehall, and it keeps moving.”
At the heart of it was the tradition of 1970s London DJs who spun reggae records between bands at punk shows—that Kingston, London, New York, Dublin, Southern California sonic lineage, a confluence of Celtic heritage, punk, rocksteady, folk music, and all three waves of ska. For three nights, Flogging Molly, The English Beat, NOFX, Less Than Jake, The Skatalites, The Bouncing Souls, and CJ Ramone play multiple sets. When they aren’t playing, they are amongst the sea dogs. Because when you’re on a boat, what the hell else are you going to do?
Then there are Maxwell’s side band, The Bunny Gang, playing their own version of revolution reggae; The Cherry Coke$’ Irish folk punk from Japan, Allison Wolfe’s Sex Stains; hardcore Mexican ska from Voodoo Glow Skulls; Chicago’s Celtic crushers, Flatfoot 56; Miami’s Askultura playing punk-ska-rumba; DeVotchKa; West Lindy; Jon Gazi; Dylan Walshe; The Attack; Pasadena; The Potato Pirates; Captains Of The Head; Brogue Wave; and The Fuckin’ Godoys. They even included Boston’s Mickey Rickshaw, whose hooligan fiddle player was a stowaway on the first cruise, playing naked in the hot tub in order to get his band an official slot.
Throw in DJ sets and Flogging Molly’s accordionist Matt Hensley’s old friends all crushing a mini ramp on deck, and it is everything a rude boy could ask for… on a boat. It’s 24/7 punk rock: pinup girls poolside, mohawks at the breakfast buffet, and Doc Martens stomping across a tropical beach.
[envira-gallery id=”225859″]
On Saturday, the Enchantment anchors up at CocoCay, where everyone takes trips to the tiny tropical isle surrounded by coral and fish. The Mollys rip up the beach with their second set of the trip. King offers some polite banter back to NOFX, noting that “Michael” hadn’t even made it to the island.
“It’s all rebel music,” Maxwell explains under the swaying palms. “I think that’s the common thread throughout. The thing about folk music, punk music, and reggae music—they all deal with themes that are universal, this consciousness that we’re all on this planet together. That doesn’t mean we should become homogenized and join some new world order. It’s the opposite: celebrating diversity. It’s what I was drawn to. When I met Dave King and Flogging Molly as a kid, I wasn’t looking to join an Irish folk punk band. I was genuinely looking to be in something I believe in. I was a young punk rocker.”
“I still identify with that,” he continues. “It was always about something real. I saw Zander Schloss last night. He’s one of my favorites, and he unapologetically calls it ‘spirit music.’ There’s no one dogma or religion here. Yet, I genuinely feel the spirit flowing through the music. It’s more than just tones and time.”
On the third night, there are few formalities left, as rum and Guinness—and ice cream—turn shipmates into the best of friends. Maxwell and The Bunny Gang lift anchor, setting the tone for another evening of high-seas skanking and deck-side debauchery.
Things kick into high gear when New Jersey’s favorite sons, The Bouncing Souls, take the helm, ripping through multiple classics before asking for requests. The crew wants to hear “Shark Attack,” but drummer George Rebelo doesn’t know the 1997 classic. To avoid mutiny, they agree to play it, with Mickey Rickshaw’s Chris Campbell volunteering on drums and two fans acting out the skit. It goes off without a hitch.
“I was scared shitless,” Campbell admits, “but I’ve listened to The Souls my whole life. I love that song.”
Flogging Molly guitarist Dennis Casey lends a hand on “True Believers,” while a tuned-up King adds his voice to the swashbuckling chorus.
Sailing under a full moon, The English Beat rock the Orpheum with 2 Tone songs that stretch back 40 years. “Punk is like the white boy Rasta,” says King Schascha, the toaster who plays alongside frontman Dave Wakeling, founder of the original English Beat. “We go against the norm, against the politics and the government. So, the majority of the time, unless you come to the islands, you don’t see the white boy Rastafarians too much. But punk came from reggae, being an outlaw, being able to stand up—the rude boy thing.”
Schascha admits he’s the rare Trinidadian native who favors hardcore reggae over calypso music. He is thoroughly enjoying the cruise and this first deep experience with punk. “In California, if you’re on the freeway for 30 minutes, you have 100 cars that drive by and 100 of them have NOFX on the back of it,” he explains. “So, that’s pretty much the band I want to see. And I’m going to check out Voodoo Glow Skulls.”
NOFX play their second set of the weekend on the pool deck, powering out songs ranging from 1992’s White Trash, Two Heebs and a Bean to last year’s First Ditched Effort, rocking the whole vessel with Dance Hall Crashers’ Karina Denike on keys.
And if there was any worry about how the distinguished King was taking the bantering jabs from NOFX, they are laid to rest when he is caught in front of the stage, outfitted as a captain and poking a mic stand up Fat Mike’s skirt.
For as sea captain Sir Francis Drake once said, “It is not that life ashore is distasteful to me. But life at sea is better.”

5 Insane Things You Might See On Flogging Molly's Salty Dog Cruise
Members of Flogging Molly name the five calamities you might encounter on their Fifth Annual Salty Dog Cruise.
Sometimes, music festival cruises feel a little random; for Celtic punks Flogging Molly , the format makes perfect sense. The band's high-flying, brine-drunk songs seem right at home on the high seas, where never-ending bars and deckside shenanigans make for blur of raised glasses, good times, and foolhhardy ideas. So it's unsurprising that their Salty Dog Cruise is now entering its fifth year, and has become the annual highlight of the lives of their fans.
"There’s this group of people who call themselves 'shipmates' -- they meet up in the city and come to our shows, and they all converge and migrate to the boat," says guitarist and vocalist Dennis Casey." It’s this level of love and passion. I have to admit, I was very skeptical in the beginning -- I’d never been on a cruise, and I didn’t really understand how to make it work. But I gotta tell you, the second I got on the boat, I met two people from Belgium, and thought, ‘Oh my God, this could be great.’"
Besides the sheer level of dedication shown by annual attendees, this year's Salty Dog Cruise boasts plenty to make it a bucket list experience. There's also a line-up that includes Pennywise , Stiff Little Fingers , Frank Turner & The Sleeping Souls, The Bronx , and more; stops at Key West and CocoKay, Bahamas; and a professional-grade skate ramp on the roof deck for doing kickflips beneath the stars. And of course, being on a boat in the middle of the ocean, there's nothing to do but party -- all the time.

"At another festival, when it’s time to go, it’s time to go," says accordion player Matt Hensley. "There is no stopping here -- I’ve been walking around at nine in the morning, and there are still people getting after it, walking around with bottles of whiskey or dancing with DJs."
Having heard the rumors, and curious to learn what the voyage has in store, we asked Dennis and Matt to tell us about the most insane things your average sailor will see on the Salty Dog Cruise. Here's what they told us...
Over a hundred Jameson shots, consumed in a single moment
Dennis: The first year, the shipmates did this toast in the front bar of the boat. There were hundreds of people at this thing, and there were hundreds of shots on the bar. It was staggering when you walked by -- just the fumes from the alcohol. And they passed them all out! And every year, they pick a reason to toast -- to be there is one, sure, but let’s say everyone pitched in to give someone a little extra money, like let's say [someone was] struggling with some health issues. They do a huge cheers. I’ve never seen so many shots of Jameson consumed in one instant!
Jacuzzi-side rock star performances
Dennis: The first year, Frank Turner was on he cruise. I was walking around, and I thought I heard people singing. I couldn’t tell what was going on. I went to the jacuzzi at the top of the boat, and I followed [the noise], there’s a bunch of people singing along -- and there’s Frank Turner, sitting there with his guitar next to the jacuzzi, doing a whole acoustic set for whoever was there. And I was like, ‘There’s not many places in the world you can experience this.’
Punk rock dance parties during tropical storms
Matt: There was a moment last year, where we did a northern soul dance part. We were DJ-ing at midnight, and a storm was hitting, and everyone -- including the Buzzcocks -- were dancing on the deck of the ship. It was pouring, and people were just dancing in the rain while the ship got beat up by the waves. Dennis's poor, beautiful wife was getting seasick...
Dennis: Yeah, she was getting seasick...and I was no help. I just ran out on the balcony, and was howling at the moon. You could see the storm from a distance -- the lightning and everything. It was so beautiful.

Night skating while your favorite punk legends play under the stars
Matt: One of the many stories that always sticks with me is that I was skateboarding on the deck with a bunch of professionals. We’re skating this ramp, and 30 feet away from me, English Beat were playing. And then you look up, and and you look at the stars, and you’re looking over the Caribbean. If you would’ve told me back in 1985 that I’d be on a ramp listening to English Beat over the Caribbean, I would’ve called you crazy.
Straight-up baby makin'
Dennis: We've had marriages on board, and kids being conceived. People have come up to us and said, ‘We’re going to have a baby, and we figured it out -- we conceived on the cruise!’ They just went on our cruise, and...this beautfiul thing happened! People have also gotten married on it -- our old banjo player got his marriage license, and he married a few people. Last year, our friend Rob had his...did he have his wedding there? Or his bachelor party? Or both?

The Moscow metro now has a full 4G coverage
- On 19 Oct 2018
The Tele2 mobile network company became the first to build an infrastructure for 100% stations of the Moscow's metro. The high-quality 4G internet is now available on all 259 stations of the Moscow's metro, Moscow Central Circle (MCC) and monorail.
The operator has secured a 100% 4G indoor-coverage internet an all stations of the metropolitan metro, including the passageways, pavilions, and stairways. The investments into the project have exceeded 800 million rubles.
The Moscow underground is a specific infrastructure object, which has its own particularities. All works on designing, installation, and adjustment of the hardware should have been conducted exceptionally during night hours when the metro is closed for entry. A sufficient number of stations have a status of cultural heritage, thus, the network development has required additional approvement from the Department of Cultural Heritage of Moscow.
The network coverage within the metro system opens new horizons for the analysis of the "big data". Tele2 Network has analyzed the users' activity during the summer months and has indicated the busiest metro lines, which were: Tagansko-Krasnopresnenskaya, Zamoskvoretskaya and Kaluga-Riga lines. During the summer months, on the stations of Tagansko-Krasnopresnenskaya lines the subscribers have downloaded 125 TByte of internet-traffic, have made over 2 million calls with the total duration of 27 thousand hours, which equals to 3 years.

My five kolibris, these are great little boats; a little fragile around rocks, but fast and fun to sail click on the thumbprints below for details.
Kolibri # 1 (Kolibri is German for hummingbird)
The year was 1984. i was killing time in a hardware store while getting broken windows repaired. an ad on the store's bulletin board caught my eye and i stopped for a closer look. someone wanted to sell a 12' "kolibri" sailboat for only $250. it even had a car-top loading device and dolly. i looked, bought and was hooked on sailing for life.
The boat had no trailer, so I bought another small boat with a trailer and sold the boat for what I paid for both.
Kolibri # 2
About ten years later, i found an orange kolibri that had hardly been used. i sold the yellow boat for twice what i paid for it. for 18 years, my wife, our children and grandchildren enjoyed sailing our kolibri..
It was not a happy day in 2002 when I finally sold our little "Hummingbird," but we were retiring to the USA and couldn't take it with us. After settling in America, I began looking for another Kolibri. The German-built Kolibri was sold in America for a number of years, sometimes under the name "Koralle Jr." but the few that I found on the Internet were too far away. Glenmore Boats of Canada continued making the Kolibri with a few changes and another Canadian company built the "Echo," which is nearly identical, but a new boat was was not in my budget. More recently I have learned of a "Koralle II Sunsail" and a "Freedom Seeker 12" that were apparently from the same mold.
I owned several canoes and sailboats (see other tabs), but it was four years before i finally found another kolibri. on july 29, 2007, i saw an ad on craigslist for a koralle jr. located just across the delaware river in philadelphia. i responded immediately and on july 31, i towed my trophy home, when the former owner heard that i was "downsizing" and had a mutineer 15 for sale, he came and bought it. here are photos of both boats in our driveway..
The boat had been stored outside without protection, so the seat and transom were badly weathered. The boat had been used primarily as a rowboat, however, and the centerboard, rudder and sails were in near new condition. I made a mahogany transom and seat, after which I took it for a sail. One of the former owners had repaired several cracks in the floor of the boat, but he apparently was not experienced in such repairs. I tightened the shrouds and in a brisk breeze, the floor suddenly cracked around the mast step. Before I could get to shore, the mast dropped through the bottom of the boat! I have photos of the damage and repairs on another page if you are interested: Kolibri Repair The photos below show the boat after repairs.
This boat is the same color as the second Kolibri that I owned in Austria, but that one had blue stripes on the mainsail. I bought it from the original owner with the original bill of sale and owners manual. He sold a larger sailboat in 1972 and bought the Kolibri, intending to purchase a trailer for it. That never happened and the Kolibri spent the next 36 years stored in his garage.
I sailed this boat once but used the rudder from my red Kolibri rather than the brand new one that came with this boat. I sold Kolibri #4 in September, 2009 with a nice aluminum trailer for $1600. The owner later sold it and moved up to a larger vessel.
Kolibri #5 In May, 2010, someone wrote and asked if I was interested in a Kolibri. It needed much work but the rigging was mostly there. I went and picked it up of course! When new, it was like Kolibri #2 and #4, but this one is beyond repair! I sold the dagger, rudder and sails. I will use the mast and boom on another boat.
In summer, 2014, someone in canada gave me the complete rigging for a kolibri i already know where i can use most of the parts, but if someone gives me a good kolibri hull i may change my mind, other boats built by atlanta boats in germany atlanta boat works, germany (word document about the history), the flamingo 20, the 440 (15 ft) no photo - may be one of the varios the vario i, ii, iii and s models, whereby the "s" may be the vario i someone in california sent photos of this unknown atlanta 16.4' boat with the atlanta hummingbird (kolibri) and crown logo plus roman numeral v (5 meters). if anyone has more information, please send it to [email protected] the 550 (18 ft) sketch shown below, the koralle 15 (not to be confused with the koralle jr.) was only sold in europe, but this one is located in california., the mungo 10.

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.
SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3
- SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
- D : Displacement in pounds.
Ballast / Displacement Ratio
A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.
Ballast / Displacement * 100
Displacement / Length Ratio
A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.
D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³
- D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
- LWL: Waterline length in feet
Comfort Ratio
This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.
Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )
- D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
- LOA: Length overall in feet
- Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet
Capsize Screening Formula
This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.
CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)
Built of FG after 1980. After 50 boats the reverse sheer is straitened and coach roof extended forward of mast (850<). many sold as kits. < p>
