Florida's gulf coast nature tours.

Strolling along a beautiful shoreline usually conjures up feelings of serenity and awakens your senses to the splendid surroundings unfolding before you. Yet, did you ever wonder about all the people that journeyed on that beach ahead of you? My family and I recently walked a gorgeous coastline of Florida's Gulf Islands and discovered its rich history and all the secrets it holds. Where the southern shores of Tampa Bay meet the Manatee River and Terra Ceia Bay lays rustic and old-Florida style Snead Island. Here you'll find the 365-acre Emerson Point Conservation Preserve. This Manatee County property located on west end of the island has witnessed human use for more than 4,500 years. Both ancient inhabitants and Florida pioneers have called this breathtaking stretch of land home, along with diverse groups of native and exotic animals and plants.

Just Around the Bend...

Karen Fraley, a naturalist and the owner of Around the Bend Nature Tours, escorted my family on a hike throughout the island where modern and ancient mix. "This is a nice change of pace from the theme parks," said Fraley before we embarked on our eco-tour. "You can have a real adventure in the real Florida." Fraley explained to my husband and I and our two sons, Baker, 13, and Jake, 11, that the original inhabitants of the island are referred to as "Amerindians." Their true names are unknown. "The Amerindians came to Emerson Point Preserve for the abundant shell fish and other food and raw materials thousands of years ago," she said.

Emerson Point

Remnants of the cultures that lived on Emerson Point Preserve are still there today. Fraley exhibited reconstructed artifacts from the native people and asked us to speculate what they are and for what they were used. "That's a shovel," guessed Baker, looking at a conch shell fastened to a piece of wood with homemade rope. Fraley explained it was actually a hammer used to open shellfish. We tried to deduct the uses of other artifacts like hoes and weaving looms, all of which were made from wood, sticks, shells, bone and rope. Fraley told how the Amerindians made canoes, homes and other necessities from what was available in the environment surrounding us. Our tour guide asked the boys to pull some fiber strands from the native cabbage and sabal palms. Baker and Jake quickly granted her wish with handfuls of the stuff. She sat them down and engaged them in native rope weaving, which entailed braiding the palm fibers. Proud of his work, my younger son took a piece of his creation and fashioned a rope bracelet around his wrist. The native Indians used rope like the boys made in many ways, and not just for accessories. They used the palm fiber to make casting nets to catch fish, fastening heavy shells on the nets for weights, and also for fire. Fraley brought out a mechanism made from a round chip of an oak tree, a stick and the homemade rope. The device created friction to start a kindling fire. The boys took turns furiously churning the fire starter, trying to get a puff of smoke. "This is hard," Jake said with a wide grin on his face. Fraley encouraged the boys to keep trying and they abided, enjoying every minute of it. The most intriguing artifact was the Indian spear thrower. "This is a special lever the native people made from carved wood to help them cast their spears farther and faster," Fraley described. Both Baker and Jake attempted several tries and finally got the hang of it, proving its usefulness. The Amerindians used spears on Emerson Point to hunt deer, fish and wild turkey.

Ceremonial Grounds

As a group, we ascended a wooden boardwalk that led us to the highest point in the park, the Portavant Temple Mound. Overlooking the Manatee River, the 1,200-year-old Indian mound is the largest in the Tampa Bay area. "This was not a burial mound," Fraley said in response to my older son's question. "It was a place were chiefs and elders would have ceremonies and people could watch." On top of the shell mound, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, it was easy to imagine a chief or shaman leading a ceremony for the villagers below. Major Robert Stewart Griffith built the island's first pioneer home on top of the Portavant mound in 1867. Griffith introduced citrus trees, bananas, peppers and tomatoes to the island that now features a combination of residential homes, agricultural endeavors, a marina and a restaurant. Griffith married Anna Webb, a member of a pioneering family that settled in Sarasota County. Fraley showed us the remains of their small home, along with other pioneer dwellings that were constructed the late 1800s to the 1960s. "They used shell, sand and burnt oyster to create lime for concrete to build their homes," said Fraley. Baker and Jake were then challenged by our guide to pull a pod off a nearby nickerbean tree and open it up. Inside the pod the boys found two brown, round, and hard beans. "That is what the pioneer boys and girls used to play marble games," she said. "That's cool," said Jake as he juggled the beans in his palm. He put the beans in his pocket to show his friends later. Baker followed suit and grabbed a couple more pods to open as we continued on our trek. As we hiked along, we also saw gumbo-limbo trees, strangler figs - which enticed my children because they really do strangle other trees - wild coffee, native beach sunflowers, blanket flowers, fire brush, coral bean blooms and mangrove trees. Animal sightings were scarcer, but the preserve is home to raccoons, foxes, gopher tortoises, ospreys, anhingas, wood storks, roseate spoonbills and abundant sea life. The culmination of our journey was when we reached the observation tower. We were awed by the breathtaking views of the three bodies of water coming together and the view of the entire island. It was there we could see why man has chosen to settle on this spit of land for thousands of years. "There's the Sunshine Skyway Bridge," observed Baker. Jake noticed a large cruise ship in the distant channel of Tampa Bay bringing my thoughts back to the present time. It occurred to me that my family and I just received and enjoyed a great history lesson of a splendid part of Florida. Around the Bend Nature Tours also provides nature-heritage experiences in the Bradenton area at Coquina Baywalk on Leffis Key (for birding), in the Rye Wilderness Preserve in Parrish, in the Joan M. Durante Park mangrove forest on Longboat Key, dip-netting in the grass flats of the Manatee River and Sarasota Bay. Two other exciting, family-friendly water eco-tours in Manatee County include Ray's Canoe Hideaway on the Manatee River and Canoe Outpost on the Little Manatee River. At Ray's you can enjoy a paddling adventure by canoe or kayak on the serene Upper Manatee River Florida State Canoe Trail. The scenery offers jungle-like surrounding where you and your family can swim with manatees, soak up the sunshine, hunt for fossils, or picnic on white-sand beaches. Fishing is available for striped bass, bream, speck and the area's largest freshwater catfish. Or, you can just drift leisurely and spot herons, egrets, hawks, ospreys, otters, bobcats and turtles. Primitive camping also is accessible on the river or at Rye Wilderness Park. Real canoe enthusiasts can take on a journey on the Little Manatee River through the Canoe Outpost. Paddlers can chose from a four trips, ranging from two-and-a-half miles to 15 miles depending on whatever suits your family. Designated an "Outstanding Florida Waterway," the river has the highest level of water quality in the state. A steady current makes for easy paddling through the 2,200-acre Little Manatee River State Park. Picnic pavilions, rest rooms, hiking trails and nature walks are along the river. Any adventure is great for the beginner or experienced paddler.

Which Florida Beaches are Better, the Gulf Coast or the Atlantic?

The choice between the Gulf Coast and the Atlantic Coast beaches depends on personal preferences. The Gulf Coast beaches offer calmer waters, warmer temperatures, and stunning sunsets, while the Atlantic Coast beaches are known for their waves, cooler waters, and vibrant coastal cities.

Why Do Florida Gulf Coast Beaches Have White Sand?

The white sand on Florida Gulf Coast beaches is primarily composed of quartz crystals, which have been eroded over time from the Appalachian Mountains. The crystals wash down rivers and eventually make their way to the Gulf Coast, creating the iconic white sand beaches.

Destin’s sand is nearly 100% quartz, resulting in an exceptionally white appearance, which is even more enhanced by the natural “bleaching” process from the sun and water. Siesta Key is famous for having the whitest and softest sand in Florida, making it a must-visit destination as well.

What Beaches on the Gulf Coast of Florida are Good for Finding Shells?

Sanibel Island and Captiva Island are renowned for being excellent beaches for finding shells. Due to the unique currents and location, these beaches have a high concentration of seashells, attracting shell collectors from around the world.

Our family has also found amazing shells in St Andrews State Park in Panama City. We stayed at this state park for a week and found an amazing collection of shells from the sand cliff in the park.

RED TIDE WARNING

Red tide can be present in Florida beaches in the central Gulf Coast and southwest Gulf Coast regions due to the spread of severe algal blooms caused by Karenia brevis. It’s most common off the central and southwestern coasts of Florida between Clearwater and Sanibel Island but may occur anywhere in the Gulf.

Signs of red tide include discolored water, accumulations of algae on the surface, or foam or scum. The Florida Department of Health advises against wading, swimming, or consuming water in affected areas to avoid potential skin irritation and eye discomfort. Red tide conditions can change quickly due to winds, waves, and currents.

Red tide blooms in Florida can last from days to months and can change daily due to wind conditions and ocean currents. Blooms typically occur in the late summer or early fall and can last several months. These blooms originate offshore and can be carried to coastal beaches.

Red tide can harm wildlife and humans, especially those with respiratory conditions. Also, shellfish consumption should be avoided due to toxin accumulation. There is ongoing monitoring and sample collection that tracks the presence of red tide organisms, but make sure to stay updated on local advisories for the safety of visitors and the environment.

14 Fun Things to Do on Your 15th Birthday

One of the most unique experiences you can have on the Florida Gulf Coast is observing nesting sea turtles along the Panhandle's Gulf Islands National Seashore. This stretch of pristine coastline is the perfect habitat for these amazing creatures and offers visitors a chance to witness their nesting and hatching behaviors up close.

Gulf Islands National Seashore is a protected area that spans over 150 miles of coastline along the Florida Panhandle. It is home to several species of sea turtles, including the loggerhead, green turtle, Kemp's ridley, and leatherback. These turtles are known for their impressive nesting habits, where they return to the same beach each year to lay their eggs.

The nesting season typically runs from May to October, with peak nesting occurring in June and July. During these months, the female turtles will emerge from the water and make their way to the beach to dig a nest. They use their back flippers to create a hole in the sand, where they will deposit around 100 to 120 eggs.

After covering the nest with sand, the female turtle will return to the ocean, leaving the eggs to incubate for approximately two months. Once the eggs hatch, usually at night, the baby turtles will make their way to the water, guided by the moonlight reflecting on the ocean's surface.

Witnessing this phenomenon is truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Gulf Islands National Seashore offers a variety of ways to observe nesting sea turtles while ensuring their protection. One option is to join a guided tour led by park rangers or local wildlife experts. These tours provide valuable information about sea turtle conservation and an opportunity to witness the nesting process firsthand.

If you prefer a more independent experience, you can explore the nesting areas on your own. The park has designated areas where visitors can watch from a safe distance without disturbing the turtles. Remember to follow the rules and regulations to ensure the turtles' safety and the conservation of their nesting sites.

It is essential to be mindful of your actions when observing nesting sea turtles. Keep noise levels to a minimum and avoid using flashlights or bright lights, as they may disorient the turtles. Also, be sure to minimize any trash or debris that could interfere with the nesting process.

In conclusion, visiting Gulf Islands National Seashore to observe nesting sea turtles on the Florida Gulf Coast is a truly awe-inspiring experience. The opportunity to witness these ancient creatures in their natural habitat is not only educational but also humbling. So, make sure to plan a trip to this beautiful area during the nesting season and be part of the conservation efforts to protect these incredible animals for generations to come.

Swimming with manatees is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to interact with these gentle giants in their natural habitat. These lovable creatures, also known as sea cows, are protected by law and are considered an endangered species. Crystal River offers a safe and responsible way to view and swim with manatees, ensuring that both the animals and the environment are respected.

To begin your manatee adventure, you'll need to book a guided tour with a certified operator. These operators are licensed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and are experienced in educating visitors about manatees and their conservation. They will provide you with all the necessary snorkeling gear and a wetsuit to keep you warm in the cool waters of Crystal River.

Your tour will start with a short boat ride to the manatee's natural habitat, which is the warm freshwater springs that provide a sanctuary for these incredible creatures during the winter months. Crystal River's warm waters attract manatees seeking refuge from the colder ocean temperatures. As you enter the water, you'll be amazed by the sight of these gentle giants gracefully swimming around you.

Swimming with manatees is not a typical wild animal encounter. Manatees are curious and friendly creatures, often approaching swimmers out of sheer curiosity. However, it's important to remember that they are wild animals and should be treated with respect. Any interaction with a manatee should be passive and non-disruptive to their natural behavior.

During your encounter, you'll have the opportunity to observe manatees from a safe distance and swim alongside them if they approach you. You may even be lucky enough to experience a manatee "hug," where they gently glide past you and brush against your body. These moments create a deep connection with these majestic creatures and leave a lasting impression.

In addition to swimming with manatees, Crystal River offers other activities to enjoy during your visit. You can explore the beautiful springs and rivers on a kayak or paddleboard, go fishing, or take a scenic boat tour. The area is also rich in wildlife, so keep an eye out for dolphins, otters, and a variety of bird species.

Before you visit Crystal River, make sure to familiarize yourself with the rules and regulations in place to protect manatees. It's important to be aware of your actions and how they can impact these vulnerable animals. Keeping a respectful distance and following the guidance of your tour operator will ensure a positive and responsible experience.

  • 7 Breathtaking Towns to Visit on the Gulf Coast

America's Gulf Coast stretches approximately 1,680 miles from the southern tip of Florida to the eastern border of Texas, touching the states of Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, and Texas. This region is characterized by its warm, shallow waters, extensive wetlands, and fertile deltas, notably the Mississippi Delta, one of the largest river deltas in the world. The coastline features barrier islands, bays, and lagoons that provide critical habitats for an array of wildlife.

Thanks to its coastal setting, the Gulf Coast is home to breathtakingly beautiful small towns. These seven will make you do a double take.

Fairhope, Alabama

Fairhope, Alabama , is a town on the eastern shore of Mobile Bay. Founded in 1894 by a group of idealistic reformers and free-thinkers, known as the Fairhope Single Tax Corporation, it was based on the economic principles of Henry George and the single tax theory, which aimed to improve social conditions and promote fair land use. Today, the town's natural environment, characterized by sweeping views of Mobile Bay and lush, flowering landscapes, makes it a popular destination for visitors seeking beauty.

Fairhope Pier and Park, located at the town's waterfront, is a spot for strolling and fishing, especially during sunset. It is also a central gathering place for community events. The Marietta Johnson Museum, dedicated to the progressive educator Marietta Johnson, who founded the School of Organic Education in 1907, educates visitors on her educational methods and the community's early history. The Eastern Shore Art Center further enhances Fairhope's artistic legacy with galleries featuring contemporary art exhibits and workshops.

Its architecture features pastel-colored houses and white picket fences, and its streets are laid out so that everything is accessible by foot.

Grayton Beach State Park is an oasis with one of the most beautiful beaches in the US. The park is for swimming, sunbathing, and fishing, and its nature trail winds through a coastal forest where visitors can observe wildlife and ecosystems. Is the weather better on the Gulf or Atlantic side of Florida?

The weather on the Gulf and Atlantic sides of Florida can vary, but generally, the Gulf Coast tends to have milder and more consistent weather compared to the Atlantic Coast. The Gulf Coast experiences fewer hurricanes and tropical storms due to its geographic location.

Additionally, the Gulf waters tend to be warmer and calmer than the Atlantic waters, making it more inviting for swimming and water activities. However, it’s important to note that Florida’s weather can be unpredictable, and variations can occur between different locations and seasons on both coasts.

It’s always a good idea to check local weather forecasts and climate patterns when planning a trip to either side of Florida.

What is the safest town on the Gulf Coast of Florida?

There are several towns along the Gulf Coast that are generally considered to be safe for residents and visitors. These towns prioritize community well-being, have low crime rates, and offer a welcoming environment.

Some examples of towns often regarded as safe on the Gulf Coast of Florida include Sanibel Island , Naples , Anna Maria Island , and Marco Island . It’s important to note that while these towns have favorable safety records, it’s always wise to exercise caution, be aware of your surroundings, and adhere to common safety practices when traveling.

Is the Gulf side of Florida safer from hurricanes?

While it is not accurate to say that the Gulf side of Florida is completely immune to hurricanes, historical data suggests that the Gulf Coast has experienced fewer direct hurricane impacts compared to the Atlantic Coast of Florida. This is due in part to the Gulf of Mexico’s geographic characteristics, such as its shallow waters and warmer temperatures, which can inhibit the formation and intensification of hurricanes.

Which is better Florida Gulf Coast or Atlantic Coast?

Both coasts offer unique experiences and attractions.

The Gulf Coast of Florida is known for its calm and warmer waters, making it ideal for swimming, boating, and water activities. The beaches along the Gulf Coast often have soft, white sand and are renowned for their natural beauty. The region also offers stunning sunsets, relaxed coastal towns, and a more laid-back atmosphere.

On the other hand, the Atlantic Coast of Florida is known for its lively beach towns, vibrant nightlife, and a wider range of surfing and water sports opportunities. The beaches along the Atlantic Coast tend to have a bit more wave action and cooler waters, making them appealing to those seeking a more dynamic beach experience.

Both coasts have their own distinct charm and offer a variety of activities, attractions, and natural wonders. It ultimately depends on individual preferences, whether you prefer a tranquil and serene setting (Gulf Coast) or a livelier and more energetic atmosphere (Atlantic Coast). Exploring both coasts can provide a well-rounded Florida experience.

Are there alligators in Florida Gulf?

Yes, alligators can be found in various parts of the Florida Gulf Coast. Alligators are native to Florida and are well adapted to freshwater environments, including rivers, lakes, swamps, and marshes.

They are often found in habitats such as mangrove swamps, estuaries, and freshwater bodies near the Gulf Coast. It’s important to be cautious and aware of your surroundings when near bodies of water in Florida, as alligators are a natural part of the ecosystem. It’s advised to observe alligators from a safe distance and never approach or feed them, as they are wild animals and should be treated with respect.

Gulf Coast cities

The Gulf Coast of Florida is dotted with vibrant and charming cities that offer a range of experiences. Pensacola boasts historic charm and beautiful beaches, while Tampa provides a bustling waterfront district and theme parks.

St. Petersburg combines arts and culture with stunning beaches, and Sarasota is known for its cultural attractions and natural beauty. Naples offers upscale amenities, and Fort Myers provides historical sites and outdoor activities.

Clear Kayaking on the Florida Gulf Coast: 5 Best Tours for Unique Paddling and Wildlife

Clear kayaking on the Florida Gulf Coast is becoming more and more popular, and now there are several places to do clear kayaks from Naples up to the start of the Panhandle. We’ve done it for bioluminescent kayaking at the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge also, and each experience is unique with surprises with each paddle. The transparent kayak helps paddlers see the wildlife that exists below the surface and observe the underwater world in a totally different way.

We’ve picked our top five spots for clear kayaking on the Florida Gulf Coast and each is totally different and worthwhile. Yes, you’ll find clear kayaking all around Florida, including on the Atlantic, down in the Florida Keys and at several springs. Pick where you’re most interested and add it to your Florida trip !

If you have any additional questions about clear kayaking on the Florida Gulf Coast or want to share your own recommendations, please leave a comment or send us a note . We’re always happy to share more!

Clear Kayaking on the Florida Gulf Coast is one of the most unique experiences to plan. Paddling with manatees and through mangrove tunnels are just some of the options. Visit Florida springs and more for clear kayaking.

What are clear kayaks?

Clear kayaks are constructed of the same material as bulletproof glass and submarine portholes. This means they’re sturdy and let you see straight through them. Being able to see all the wildlife underneath the kayak, unobstructed, is what makes them such unique watercraft. They are typically more difficult to steer than a standard kayak or inflatable , but they do the trick and give you a great view of the underwater world.

Wildlife You’ll See Clear Kayaking on the Florida Gulf Coast

Depending on which Florida Gulf Coast clear kayaking tour you choose, the wildlife will vary. If you’re paddling through the estuaries or the gulf islands, no doubt you’ll come across dolphins and sea turtles. The mangroves bring all kinds of fish, sharks and birds. As you get inland, the manatees are the really find, particularly in the winter months. But my favorite…

Roseate spoonbills are one of the prettiest animals you’ll see when you’re clear kayaking on the Florida Gulf Coast. While the Roseate Spoonbill wades in the water to feed, they also hang out in the mangrove branches. You’ll be mesmerized by how pink they are. They’re not related to the flamingo but get their bright pink hue in the same way, from the crustaceans they eat.

5 Clear Kayaking Tours You’ll Love on Florida’s Gulf Coast

While there are 8-10 different clear kayaking tours to choose from on the Gulf Coast of Florida, we’ve picked the five we love the most. Each is very different from the next and all are 30 minutes to an hour off I-75, so each is very easy to add to a Gulf Coast road trip .

Clear Kayaking to Shell Key Preserve, Tampa Bay

The clear kayaking tour to Shell Key Preserve is a very unique kayaking trip, as it crosses a fair amount of open water to get to the main paddling destination. Starting at the edge of Tampa Bay proper in Tierra Verde, just south of St Pete Beach, you’ll paddle out through some of the most gorgeous turquoise water on the Gulf Coast.

This is a fine paddle for experienced OR beginner paddlers. Because it’s a combination of open water and mangrove islands, you’ll get a broad view of Florida’s ecosystems and completely varying nature. Really cool and fun!

Highlights of Kayaking to Shell Key Preserve

The entire tour is about 3 miles. It was a little overcast and windy the day we went. The overcast skies were appreciated though – the average temperature in St. Petersburg in July is 91-degrees Fahrenheit with a lot of humidity.

Check out more great Florida day trips from MyCornacopia here!

The first stop is a mangrove island. If you’ve never seen a mangrove in person, they’re fascinating. The mangrove is a salt-tolerant tree whose roots stick out of the ground. Mangroves are essential to Florida because they protect the mainland from storm surge when a hurricane hits. They’re also crucial to the animals of the area. Fish will use the mangroves to lay their eggs. Once the eggs hatch, the baby fish live there for protection until they’re large enough to go out into the Gulf.  You’ll also find mangrove tunnels here.

Mangrove Tunnel_Marcea Cazel

Shell Key Preserve is undeveloped and sits at the tip of Tampa Bay. The barrier island of Shell Key is about 195 acres and is home to birds, fish and a wide variety of wildlife. And of course, shells! The only way to access Shell Key is by water making it incredibly peaceful.

Shell Key is known for its tradition of shell trees. You’ll notice trees on Shell Key that have shells hanging off of them. No one knows how they got started, but you can add to them yourself as you enjoy clear kayaking on the Gulf Coast of Florida.

Tarpon Springs Clear Kayaking

Tarpon Springs isn’t one of the most famous places on the Florida Gulf Coast, but it’s one of the most special. The shape of the bay and the fresh water flowing in from the inland freshwater springs make for a beautiful place for clear kayaking. Tarpon Springs is a wonderful place for kayaking with manatees.

Starting in November and lasting into early spring, the manatees make their way into the springs inland from the coast and then back out to the bays as the temperatures fluctuate. Tarpon Springs is the perfect spot to observe this, and how cool for manatees to swim under you while enjoying clear kayaking!

Highlights of Visiting Tarpon Springs

Tarpon Springs is really fun to explore on foot. Being the sponge diving capitol of Florida and a very strong Greek community, it’s one of the most unique towns in Florida. After your morning of clear kayaking with manatees, wander the waterfront eating Greek pastries and gyros, shopping for sponges and art. It’s a great day trip from Tampa Bay.

Clear Kayaking in Crystal River with Manatees

Crystal River is a famous spot to see manatees. It’s the only place in Florida where you can legally swim with manatees, but truly you shouldn’t. Swimming with manatees teaches them to come close to humans and not fear them, thus having long-term negative effects. But doing clear kayaking in Crystal River where there are so many manatees and you are NOT willfully interacting with them, that’s a great idea!

If you’re thinking that clear kayaking with manatees won’t be as good or as special as swimming with them, don’t worry. Because manatees are such large creatures, so people who swim with them get very nervous and even panic when in the water. And although manatees don’t have hands, they will sometimes hug people in the water which can be either special or terrifying. Clear kayaking with manatees gives you a remarkable view and experience, without the uncertainty of being in the water.

Adjacent to the Crystal River area where you can clear kayak with manatees (or swim if that’s what you prefer to do) is the Three Sisters Spring Reserve . One of the most beautiful, pristine freshwater springs on Florida’s Gulf Coast, getting to clear kayak here will completely wow you. You haven’t seen water this gorgeous on the Gulf Coast before.

Highlights of Crystal River in Winter

While we don’t encourage people to swim with manatees, during the winter months when they are in Crystal River in large numbers, swimming is allowed. You are not allowed to touch them and you are supposed to keep your distance, but many don’t follow those rules.

The benefit of clear kayaking with manatees during the winter at Crystal River is that you get a great view of the enormous creatures and you can be confident that you are not going to break any laws regarding your interactions with the manatees. Also, even though it’s Florida, getting in the river in the winter is FREEZING. We’ve done it, and I don’t recommend it.

Naples and the Estuaries for Clear Kayaking

Naples is a beautiful town and is one of the best places to kayak in South Florida . Just to the north is Bonita Springs, which is where you’ll find Lovers Key State Park and countless mangrove island and passes. This estuary area is one of the best for clear kayaking on the Florida Gulf Coast. With the sheltered waterways and preserves all around, kayaking in the Estero Bay Aquatic Preserve is awesome!

This is a particularly good place for wildlife watching, including dolphins, nurse sharks, rays and so many different types of birds. Clear kayaking in Estero Bay is an easy day trip from both Naples and Fort Myers. The winding paths are really cool to explore.

Clam Pass Estuary Naples Gulf Coast Florida 1

What makes this Florida Gulf Coast clear kayaking so different from the other places we’ve shared is the sheltered mangrove tunnels. There are a few really magical things about Florida and mangroves are one of them. They filter out millions of gallons of water each day and they are a unique habitat for many creatures… and they also look like they’re straight out of a mystical nature fantasy novel.

Within the quiet mangroves you can often spot sharks, iguanas, rays and more wildlife. You’ll love clear kayaking through the tunnels surrounding Estero Bay. Such a fantastic Naples / Fort Myers excursion!

Things to do in Naples and Fort Myers

Naples is almost like the gateway to Everglades National Park on the Gulf Coast. It’s the perfect combination of Florida nature in the Glades and the countless islands of the Gulf. In addition to there being several kayaking spots in Florida’s National and state parks close to Naples, the beaches and town are wonderful on their own.

Check out the Naples Botanical Garden and Celebration Park to get a feel for the town and then end the day at the beach. The Naples Pier is a long one stretching out into the Gulf and it’s a great place to both watch for dolphins and catch the sunset.

Naples Beach Pier Stormy 3

Fort Myers is the other big town near the Bonita Springs / Estero Bay clear kayaking area. Fort Myers Beach and Sanibel Island are famous for their beach combing. One of the highlights of Fort Myers Beach is the sandbar that forms about thirty feet out in the water. Watch for conchs, crabs and more when you’re on the sandbar. It’s a different sort of Gulf Coast experience from the clear kayaking.

Also in Fort Myers Beach is the Matanzas Pass Preserve . If you don’t get enough of the mangroves that you kayak through, there are actually boardwalks and trails here where you can explore the mangrove islands on foot.

Mango St Access Fort Myers Beach 2

Rainbow River Clear Kayaking

This is one of the prettiest places in Florida, and to get to explore Rainbow Springs State Park via clear kayak is really cool. The Rainbow River is known for being one of the most colorful waterways on the Gulf Coast, with an incredible combination of limestone, bubbling spring areas, unique underwater vegetation and beautiful riverbanks.

The cypress trees and oaks that line the Rainbow River are full of birds, from ibises to herons and egrets of every sort. The Rainbow River is also known for have a solid alligator population. WHAT?! Yes, but don’t worry about that, here’s why:

  • alligators are NOT interested in people and will sooner stay asleep or swim away than approach
  • you’re in a clear kayak, so you can safely observe from a distance
  • alligators like to preserve their energy so seeing them laying in the sun or swimming slowly is 99.9% of the time as exciting as an alligator encounter will get.

Paddling on the Rainbow River is one of the most beautiful kayaking experiences on the Florida Gulf Coast. You’ll love it.

Visiting Rainbow Springs State Park on Land

In addition to the clear kayaking on the Rainbow River, you can visit Rainbow Springs State Park too. It used to be one of the Florida Attraction Parks, so you’ll see that there are around 15 man-made waterwalls as well as the overgrown ruins of an old zoo. It’s strange and cool. If you go hiking at Rainbow Springs State Park, stay alert for wildlife, including snakes and black bears. It’s a bit wild.

For swimming, Rainbow Springs is perfect, with a consistent 72 degrees water temperature year round. There is a large swimming platform for jumping off of, and bring your snorkel gear too, as you can swim over and explore the massive headspring.

Where else can I do clear kayaking in Florida?

There are actually a surprising number of clear kayaking spots from different tour companies all around Florida. On the Atlantic Coast at Titusville is our favorite: Bioluminescent Clear Kayaking . In Key West you’ll find glass bottom kayaking, which is slightly different and you can only see through the bottom. From Miami to Silver Springs, you’ll find even more.

Check out these other clear kayaking tours around Florida to see which you can fit into your FL vacation!

Best Kayaking Spots in Florida’s National and State Parks

W hen people think of Florida, they might not automatically think about kayaking.  As it turns out, there are over 1200 miles of coastline stretching along the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico. Opportunities abound for recreational kayaking in the Sunshine State , from the Atlantic side to the Gulf of Mexico.

Many state and national parks in Florida offer easy access to waterways and other destinations such as beaches, rivers, creeks, lakes, springs, and wildlife refuges. Whether you’re looking for a gentle paddle or a glorious multi-day kayaking trip, Florida has you covered. It’s one of our favorite kayaking destinations (and yes, I know we live here).

If you have any questions about our suggestions or want to add your own favorite Florida State Parks or National Park sites for kayaking, please leave a comment or send us a note . We’re always happy to share more!

Kayaking in Florida’s State Parks Need to Knows

Lots of Florida State Parks offer great accessible kayaking spots for quick day trips, family outings, or just a more leisurely paddle. Be mindful that most of Florida is known for its hot, humid weather , with brutal summers well into the 90s. Winter is much more pleasant, rarely seeing temperatures below 70 degrees, but every now and then we get surprised by a blazing day on the water. Something super important to consider when planning your trip, be mindful of hurricane season, which typically runs from June to November, with September being the peak month.

Some people coming to Florida State Parks for kayaking are looking for an adventure with alligators, most are leisure travelers who want to avoid the bugs and the heat. Just a stone’s throw from some of the biggest Florida cities you’ll find lots of parks and preserves perfect for paddling.

Most Florida State Parks have kayak rentals available if the park is a good place for it, but if there isn’t a vendor, you can usually bring your own gear for a small launch fee ($4-6). In any waterway, you are required to have a PFD available for each paddler, but those over 6 aren’t required to wear them at all times. WE RECOMMEND ALL KIDS UNDER 14 WEAR A PFD WHILE UNDERWAY.

Top Picks for Florida Keys Kayaking in State and National Parks

The Florida Keys are absolutely beautiful, with turquoise waters and wildlife everywhere. There are actually more than 10 state and National Park sites in the Keys, most with kayaking and SUP opportunities.

Kayaking at John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park

John Pennekamp Coral Reef State is located in the backcountry of Florida Bay and not too far from Everglades National Park, and it’s one of best places to kayak in the Florida Keys . The park’s uniqueness is a result of the Everglades’ freshwater colliding with the salt waters of the bay and the Gulf of Mexico, creating a diverse ecosystem teeming with wildlife . Complete with dolphins, crocodiles, seabirds, and an underwater world with opportunities for snorkeling, beginner paddlers will enjoy many activities. The beautiful scenery is great for beginners as the area is free of motorized boats and crowds. We recommend checking out the Dusenbury Creek which allows paddlers to kayak through mangrove tunnels. Visit Florida Bay Outfitters or  Out There Key Largo Kayak and Fishing Expeditions for kayak tours.

For more info on John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park , check out our full article about paddling, camping and all the cool things to do at Pennekamp State Park!

Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary

The protected Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary (FKNMS), the tranquil region, is a great place to explore nature by kayak. Beginners can rent shallow-draft kayaks and will be able to venture out into the pristine backcountry waters. Paddlers can see marine mammals and roosting birds by gliding over shallow seagrass beds and thick mangrove tunnels. The islands and bays are perfect for beginners, given the sheltered bays. The diversity of the marine life ecosystems spans from Key Largo to Key West over 100 miles and is part of the Florida Circumnavigational Saltwater Paddling Trail. This is a SUP Friendly paddling destination.

Visit The Florida Keys Marine Sanctuary website to read more about kayaking in the protected area, which includes a portion of Curry Hammock State Park and others. In addition to the area designated as the FKNMS there is also the Key West National Wildlife Refuge, that is incredible for kayaking. Adventures here are some of the best things to do in Key West and are perfect for exploring with kids.

  • Toms Harbor Cut Bridge , Duck Key Viaduct, Duck Key, FL 33050
  • Marathon Public Boat Ramp , 33rd St, Marathon, FL 33050

Bahia Honda State Park for Kayaking

The waters at Bahia Honda State Park are perfect for kayakers and make a great stop on a Florida Keys road trip . Pristine waters will spoil paddlers and white-sand beaches sandwiched between the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico. You can paddle to Little Bahia Honda from launching from Loggerhead Beach. Bring snorkels as the park is also home to some of the most vibrant coral reefs in Florida.

Kayaking in Florida’s National Parks

Given the vast outdoor space of Florida, it’s easy to find epic multi-day adventures paddling through the great wilderness, particularly if you are hardy, brave and want to go out with a guide. An endless number of outfitters will help you plan your trip and guide you through the rugged terrain safely. Those looking for a challenge surrounded by Florida wildlife won’t be disappointed, and if you’re into birdwatching, Florida’s National Parks are EPIC.

Everglades National Park Paddling

Everglades National Park is a subtropical paradise and there are some very unique routes and options for kayakers. With its proximity to the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean, paddlers can choose which side of the park to start on a multi-day excursion (or put in/out and drive to the other side). The best way to take in the Everglades is through the Wilderness Waterway, a trail between Everglades City and Flamingo. Tide charts will be your savior from getting stuck in mud during low tide.

It is recommended to make this trip during the winter or spring, taking full advantage of the winds. Multi-day trips start in Everglades City and end in Flamingo. Embarking on this trip is best done through an outfitter as it requires planning and back-country permits.

Kayaking tour idea: Clear Kayaking out of Naples, FL , just north of Everglades National Park. You get the same environment/habitat experience, but can also see underwater via a clear kayak. Check out more Clear Kayaking on the Florida Gulf Coast here !

Our recommended outfitter: Everglades Florida Adventure .  To help you plan your trip, visit the National Park Service website .

  • Gulf Coast Visitor Center – 815 Oyster Bar Lane, Everglades City, FL 34139
  • Flamingo Visitor Center – 1 Flamingo Lodge Hwy, Homestead, FL 33034, United States

Top Pick: Kayaking 10,000 Islands at Everglades NPS

This part of Everglades National Park is so beautiful and unique. There are a few ways to approach kayaking here, but the best way is a guided tour because it’s a CRAZY network of islands and passages. We did the adventure with Everglades Area Tours and it was really cool. Starting with a boat assist to get us far out into the Ten Thousand Islands, we launched kayaks after a ride way out there. Wildlife, history, beaches covered in conch shells and such wonderful birding made it an unforgettable place to kayak among Florida National Park sites.

Check out our complete article all about this special experience kayaking in the 10,000 Islands of Everglades NPS . And if you just straight up know you want to book it, here’s the link for the EXACT TOUR and company we did it with .

Dry Tortugas National Park

Beyond a kayak trip, Dry Tortugas National Park provides spectacular snorkeling in crystal clear waters filled with coral reef and marine life. It is home to the historic Fort Jefferson, one of the US’ largest 19th-century forts. Rich in history and beautiful scenery, it is worth the two-hour trip via ferry. Paddlers can load their kayaks onto the ferry and need a permit to explore the area. You MUST check in with a park ranger upon arrival.

For more information on kayaking Dry Tortugas, visit the National Park Service website or the park transportation’s official website . Book the Dry Tortugas National Park ferry here!

Where to launch (in this case, catch the ferry):

  • Yankee Freedom Dry Tortugas Ferry 100 Grinnell St, Key West, FL 33040

Biscayne National Park Near Miami

Kayakers wanting to visit Biscayne National Park will find plenty of opportunities to explore the mangrove-lined shorelines and shallow bay waters. The park’s expansive Biscayne Bay is perfect for crossing to Elliott or Boca Chita Keys, and experienced kayakers can find plenty of enjoyable routes to explore. Adams Key is the most popular launching spot and a great spot to base yourself and explore the lagoons, creeks, and channels. Given the shallow waters, you won’t see motorized vessels in the area, and you’ll have the place all to yourself.

The most simple and beautiful kayaking route goes from the kayak landing near the visitor center parking area and cuts across the small bay. Circle the mangrove islands, visit the canal to look for manatees and swimming iguanas, then paddle through the mangroves. We’ve gone out with the Biscayne Institute for guided kayaking in addition to exploring on our own. They do a great job teaching while paddling. I loved it.

Visit the National Park Services website for more information.

  • Dante Fascell Visitor Center – 9700 SW 328th St, Homestead, FL 33033

Bioluminescent Kayaking at Canaveral National Seashore

A truly unique experience, the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge, a part of Canaveral National Seashore , is one of the few places in the continental USA that you can kayak in bioluminescent waters. After day the waters come alive with glowing plankton as you paddle. Clear kayaking with the bioluminescence is amazing!

You can go out on your own or take a tour, but if you haven’t been before, a guide is recommended. Kayaking at Canaveral National Seashore is really special and you won’t forget the experience of cutting your way through glowing blue waters in night.

  • Haulover Canal, Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge

Big Cypress National Preserve

If you’re a kayaker looking for an unforgettable Florida adventure, be sure to check out Big Cypress National Preserve . Bordering the Everglades National Park, Big Cypress is a diverse marine estuary swamp spanning over 700,000 acres. The preserve is home to various plant life and animals, including the endangered Florida panther. There are many trails to explore, but the best time to paddle the waterways is between November and March when temperatures are more tolerable.

For more information, including any paddling trail closures, visit the National Park Services website

Where to launch:

  • Nathaniel P. Reed Visitor Center – 33000 Tamiami Trail E, Ochopee, FL 34141

Kayaking in Florida State Parks on the Gulf Coast

There are several Florida State Parks on the Gulf Coast (west coast of FL) that offer unique salt water kayaking that ISN’T battling currents and ocean waves. While there are still tidal currents to consider on the Gulf side, they aren’t as strong as in the Florida Keys or the Intracoastal Waterway on the Atlantic side.

Honeymoon Island and Caladesi State Park

Just a short drive out of Tampa is one of Florida’s most beloved parks, Honeymoon Island State Park. For those wanting an escape from the city, kayaking the area offers four miles of beach and a virgin pine forest filled with eagles, osprey, and great horned owls, as well as many land animals. Tortoises, raccoons, and armadillos are common. BONUS: with Hurricane Idalia in 2023 displaced flamingos have started to frequent Honeymoon Island State Park. They haven’t been deemed residents yet, but they’ve been seen here since August 2023.

While a ferry shuttles most visitors to the neighboring state park, Caladesi Island, we prefer paddling! Be mindful of larger vessels though as you paddle to Caladesi Island, and say hi to the dolphins for us! Also, there can be strong currents, so be sure you’re safe and smart about your crossing.

For park information, visit the Florida State Parks site .

  • Dunedin Marina , 51 Main St, Dunedin, FL 34698

Cayo Costa State Park

If you’re looking to kayak in a beautiful, natural setting, Cayo Costa State Park is the place for you. With near miles of trails winding their way through three distinct ecosystems, you’ll find plenty to explore. The park’s highlight is the over 8 miles of undeveloped, natural beaches – perfect for finding seclusion and some well-deserved peace and quiet. The park’s numerous islands and passages between them are teeming with wildlife, including manatees, dolphins, alligators, osprey, eagles, and many seabirds. One highlight includes the Manatee Hole, a small lagoon where manatees can be seen year-round.

2022’s Hurricane Ian had a big impact on Cayo Costa State Park, and while the cabins and some facilities on the island are still not fully recovered, the kayaking and paddling routes and sights are still awesome.

For more information, visit the Cayo Costa State Park section of the Florida State Parks website .

Ten Thousand Islands National Wildlife Refuge

Looking for a place to kayak and find some peace and quiet? Look no further than the Ten Thousand Islands National Wildlife Refuge. This refuge is located between Marco Island and Everglades City . It is full of mangrove islands, which offer a beautiful landscape of intense green foliage, vivid blue sky, and abundant wildlife. If you’re looking for a kayak trail to tackle, the Sandfly Island trail is perfect for those with moderate kayaking experience.

We talked previously about the 10,000 Islands area (see above) and besides what’s clearly marked as National Park territory, the wildlife refuge covers even more area than this, making it great for kayaking, birdwatching and falling in love with Florida’s parks.

For more information, visit National Park Service website .

  • Gulf Coast Visitor Center 815 Oyster Bar Ln, Everglades City, FL 34139

North Florida Parks for Kayaking

The sights and nature in North Florida are very different from the Gulf Side or the Florida Keys. From the freshwater springs to braided river deltas, North Florida state parks offer a varied kayaking experiences including paddling with manatees, epic bird watching and paddling through the grass islands of the coast.

Silver Springs State Park

Silver Springs State Park is a great place for kayakers to visit, most famous for its glass-bottom boats that help visitors discover one of the nation’s largest springs. This is also one of the best springs to see manatees in Florida . There are plenty of trails and campgrounds to explore, and the river provides a pristine wilderness experience. Beautiful gardens and historic structures surround the main spring, and the park hosts the annual Springsfest celebration.

Kayaking allows you to experience an ancient forest surrounded by sandhills. There are options for an hour paddle or a longer half-day paddle that journeys five miles of the Silver River towards the Ocklawaha River (a personal favorite and rather technical paddle!). If you head into the Ocklawaha, know that there are A LOT OF ALLIGATORS. It’s safe if you’re safe and smart, but it is even intimidating for me, a very experienced Florida State Park kayaker.

For further information on kayaking Silver Springs State Park visit their official website .

  • Silver Springs State Park , 5656 E Silver Springs Blvd, Silver Springs, FL 34488

Timucuan Ecological & Historic Preserve

Kayakers visiting the Timucuan Ecological and Historic Preserve can explore the 6,000 years of human history while enjoying the beauty of salt marshes, coastal dunes, and hardwood hammocks. The preserve offers excellent places for kayaking, and the outfitter, Kayak Amelia , provides rentals and other tours in the area. The region is one of the last unspoiled Atlantic Coast coastal wetlands. This is a wonderful, SUP friendly paddling area.

For further information on kayaking in the area, check out the Timucuan paddling trails .

  • Sawpit Creek Boat Ramp , Big Talbot Island State Park
  • Pumpkin Hill Kayak Launch , Pumpkin Hill Creek Preserve State Park

Kayaking with Manatees at Blue Spring State Park

One of the best places to see manatees in huge numbers, Blue Spring State Park is about an hour from Orlando. Here you’ll find swimming areas, as well and wonderful paddling trails. Kayak rentals are available on a first come first served basis at the state park, and it is a very popular place, so get there early if you don’t have your own gear. March through November you can paddle in the crystal clear run at Blue Spring State Park, but in winter months it is closed to kayaks and SUPs due to the hundreds of manatees that congregate.

Launch from the French’s Landing boat ramp and paddle upstream on the St Johns River for lots of wildlife and interesting waterways. The bend in the river offers access to Snake Creek, which is a tight but beautiful paddle all the way into Hontoon Island State Park .

  • French Landing Boat Ramp , 2398 W French Ave, Orange City, FL 32763

St Augustine National Park Sites for Kayaking

Of course we’re going to share some awesome Florida parks in St Augustine for kayaking and paddling. This is where we live and we love being on the water. We actually have to NPS sites here that you can enjoy from the water: Castillo de San Marcos National Monument and Fort Matanzas National Monument .

For kayaking by the Castillo de San Marcos, you can launch from either the Vilano Beach Boat Ramp, the St Augustine Lighthouse Boat Ramp, or the marina. The Vilano launch is the easiest with the best parking, the shortest paddle and its own collection of wildlife to watch for as you paddle towards the Castillo.

For kayaking or SUP at Fort Matanzas National Monument, there are two options. You can launch with the outgoing tide from Butler Park in the Crescent Beach area , or you can go to the Fort Matanzas NPS parking area at the Matanzas Inlet bridge. With either of these launches, you cannot actually go to the fort itself, as you must have a ranger with you, but the view of the fort and the wildlife in the Intracoastal Waterway make it all worthwhile!

Recommended Kayaking Tours in near Orlando

We realized many visitors come to Florida visiting Disneyworld and the theme parks in Orlando. The following tours are a suitable alternative to the more adventurous paddling in the national and state parks listed above for those wanting some time on the water. This is ideal for taking a break from the theme parks and getting into nature easily.

  • 1.5 hours away – See manatees through a transparent kayak with this tour to Silver Springs State Park .
  • 1 hour away – Check out this tour if you are curious about mangrove tunnels and dolphins .
  • 1 hour away – Visiting in summer? Go kayaking with bioluminescence in Titusville !

When to Visit Florida for Kayaking

While kayaking is a year round sport in Florida’s state and national parks, visiting in summer means you’ll be paddling in some intense heat. That’s fine if you are well prepared with sun protection and plenty of water, and if you go out in the morning. Visiting in fall and spring is best though, as the temps are more bearable.

Weather in Florida

The best kayak in Florida is typically from late October to early March. These months have relatively low rainfall levels and cooler temperatures without too much heat and humidity. The weather is usually calmer during this time, and you’re more likely to see migratory birds and other wildlife. Keep in mind that there may be more storms later in March and into April.

Summer you will need to be wary of storms, and the possibility of getting hit by lightning, though rare, is very much possible. The Atlantic Hurricane Season starts on June 1 and lasts until November 30. The season peaks in August and early October as surface temperatures in the Atlantic hit their highest temperatures. Check out our guide to visiting the Florida Keys in summer for more info.

Need to Know for South Florida

Mosquitoes are a common problem throughout Florida and can ruin a kayaking trip. The best time to kayak in South Florida is winter when the mosquitoes are less prevalent. If you do go during the summer, be sure to take precautions against mosquitoes and use insect repellent. Again, the weather is generally cooler during the winter, making it a better time to kayak. Additionally, the tides are more predictable during this time of year, making it easier to plan your trip. You’ll face mosquitos on the Gulf side and in North Florida, but it’s not as bad as in South Florida.

There are, of course, many more Florida state parks and national park paddling spots than we’ve included here, but these are our top picks for a wide variety of kayaking experiences. If you have any questions or additional suggestions, please leave a comment so we can follow up with you. And you can send us a note too, because we’re all about helping people plan awesome adventures!

Kayaking in Florida State Parks and National Park waterways make a trip to the Sunshine State unforgettable. Top picks for the best spots to kayak in the Florida Keys, National Parks, the Gulf Coast and North Florida.
