Istanbul Airport (Istanbul, Turkey)

Istanbul Airport's food selection is a true reflection of its position at the crossroads of Europe and Asia. Stop in at spots like Simit Sarayi (at both Gate 9 and 13) for a quick taste of Turkish street food with its fresh simits and pastries, or go for a more in-depth meal at Cuisine Anatolia at the International Airside A-B Pier, showcasing the range of Turkish cuisine through dishes like kebabs and rack of lamb.

Amsterdam Airport Schiphol (Netherlands)

Get a taste of modern Dutch culture at the Schiphol airport. In Café Rembrandt , nicknamed "Schiphol's living room," travelers can kick back and enjoy local beers and snacks (even at 10 a.m. because there are no rules in an airport), or take a short culinary tour of the Netherlands at Dutch Kitchen , located on Holland Boulevard, which serves traditional dishes like Dutch pancakes and herring paired perfectly with forward-thinking cocktails that feature Jenever, a Dutch-made gin.

John F. Kennedy International Airport (New York City)

JFK's food selection is almost as massive as the airport itself. After hopping off a flight or before boarding, grab an iconic taste of New York at spots like The Palm Bar & Grille , located in Terminal 4, which brings New York steakhouse energy to the airport. But, like others on the list, JFK is truly an international hub, so it's easy to find global flavors, including Soy and Sake for ramen in Terminal 1 and Mi Casa Cantina and Restaurant in Terminal 4.

Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport (Georgia)

At Hartsfield-Jackson, travelers will find plenty of Southern hospitality. Pull up a seat for a welcome hello or goodbye at Bantam and Biddy by Shaun Doty in Concourse C, which is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner and focuses on tasty chicken meals, or head to One Flew South in Concourse E for a sophisticated sit-down meal that blends Japanese inspired flavors with Southern favorites, including shishito peppers and fully stacked burgers.

San Francisco International Airport (California)

The San Francisco International Airport offers a fantastic array of dining styles for travelers to enjoy as they prepare to go from point A to point B. Grab something locally sourced at spots like Napa Farms Market in Terminal 2, which epitomizes California's farm-to-table vibe with its bagel bar, soups, and sandwiches, all using area favorites like Cowgirl Cheese and Acme Bread.

Also try The Plant Café Organic in Terminal 2, which, as the name suggests, uses only organic ingredients for its salads, juices, and sandwiches.

Vancouver International Airport (Canada)

Celebrate the natural bounty of British Columbia when traveling through Vancouver's international airport with dining spots like Globe@YVR , located at US Terminal Level 4, which offers both gorgeous runway views and dishes that incorporate sustainable seafood caught right in the Pacific Northwest. Those looking to try British Columbia's wines can head straight to Jetside Lounge , also located at US Terminal Level 4, where the Okanagan wines are always flowing.

Plus One: Munich Airport (Germany)

Courtesy of Munich International Airport

Munich's International Airport embraces the Bavarian lifestyle in all the ways one would hope.  Here, travelers can indulge in a beer at Airbräu , the world's first airport brewery, or try the Michelin-starred Mountain Hub Gourmet Restaurant . And if you time your visit right you can explore the annual Christmas Market and Oktoberfest celebrations, which feature special menus and live music right inside the terminal.

Global Tastemakers is a celebration of the best culinary destinations in the U.S. and abroad. We asked more than 180 food and travel journalists to vote on their favorites, including restaurants and bars, cities, hotels, airports, airlines, and cruises. We then entrusted those results to an expert panel of judges to determine each category’s winners. In many categories, we’ve included a Plus One, hand-selected by our expert panel, to shout out more culinary destinations we don’t want our readers to miss. 2020 Awards Winners Announced

news - foodtrekking awards winners

This has been one of the hardest years on record for everyone and many businesses. It has been especially difficult for the travel and hospitality sectors. We have had to change what we do, and sometimes even change the core of our business models. We call this a “pivot”.

Understanding that many businesses and destinations would undergo a pivot this year, the World Food Travel Association wanted to recognize those who have not done just that, but which have done an exemplary job doing so. This year’s awards recognize not only excellence and innovation, but community impact and strategy as well.

Today the World Food Travel Association is pleased to announce the winners of our 2020 FoodTrekking Awards:

Most Innovative Culinary Tourism ‘Pivot’ for Destinations

First Place – PEI Fall Flavours Festival (PEI, Canada) Runner Up – Destination Sherbrooke (Quebec, Canada)

Most Innovative Culinary Tourism ‘Pivot’ for Businesses

First Place – Antica Australis (NSW, Australia) Runner Up – Milwaukee Food Tours (Wisconsin, USA)

Please join us in congratulating these businesses and destinations for the excellence and innovation they have shown during these challenging times.

Case studies featuring these winners will be uploaded to the Association’s website shortly.

About the FoodTrekking Awards

Founded in 2016, our FoodTrekking Awards program was our industry’s first and is today, our industry’s largest, program that recognizes excellence and innovation in food and beverage tourism. We have awarded over 50 winners since 2016. All entries are fairly judged by a confidential panel of international industry experts. This Is the Best Airport in the World, According to a New Ranking

By Hannah Towey

Hamad International Airport (HIA) in Qatar was just named the best airport in the world in the 2024 Skytrax awards, knocking 12-time winner Singapore Changi Airport down to second place.

The annual ranking is based on customer satisfaction surveys of over 500 airports, evaluating factors such as cleanliness, friendliness of airport staff, the ease of getting to and from the airport, terminal design, dining options, and more.

Hamad International Airport first opened in 2014, replacing the adjacent Doha International Airport as Qatar's main aviation hub. The airport is operated by Qatar Airways, which is consistently ranked one of the best international airlines in the Condé Nast Traveler Reader's Choice Awards , and is the only airport designed specifically for the Airbus A380 plane. This year marks the third time the airport has won the prestigious industry award.

So, what exactly sets the airport apart from the competition? One of its newest—and most ambitious—features is the “Orchard,” a 6,000-square-meter indoor tropical garden with 65 retail and dining venues launched in 2022 as part of a multi-year expansion project. Home to over 300 trees and 25,000 plants from sustainable forests around the world, it's one of the airport's many green initiatives that includes a waste management program that recycles 3,979 tons of organic compost per year to be used as fertilizer.

“Throughout our young history, we have continued to showcase our commitment to environmental sustainability–from improving carbon efficiency to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and managing wastewater," Michael McMillan, the airport's vice president of facilities management said in a 2022 news release . “Sustainability has proudly been at the forefront of what we do since our inception.”

Over the past couple years, the airport has also added a brand-new airport hotel, Oryx Garden Hotel, as well as four new airport lounges, including the glamorous Louis Vuitton Lounge . In addition to Louis Vuitton, the airport's massive retail center Qatar Duty Free has an entire “street” called Viale del Lusso devoted to luxury shops like Dolce&Gabbana, Jimmy Choo, and Valentino. It perhaps comes at no surprise then that the airport also won Skytrax's 2024 award for the world’s best airport shopping.

The airport served over 45 million passengers in 2023, a 31% increase compared to the previous year, surpassing the previous record set during the FIFA World Cup. HIA has also added new international airline partners, including Vistara, Iberia, Xiamen Airlines, Garuda Indonesia, and Japan Airlines, and serves over 250 destinations. The airport's rapid growth shows now signs of stopping: the second phase of the expansion, scheduled to begin in 2023, aims to expand the airport's capacity to over 70 million annual passengers.

“Our continuous investment in our facilities and pioneering initiatives in retail and hospitality within a single expansive terminal has made this achievement possible," Badr Mohammed Al-Meer, the CEO of Qatar Airways Group, said in a news release . "We have introduced a diverse range of experiences at the airport, including ‘Souq Al Matar’, which brings Qatari hospitality and culture closer to travelers; ‘Orchard’, the ideal place for relaxation and rejuvenation between flights; and an array of high-end lounges.”

Other standout winners in the 2024 Skytrax airport awards include Seoul's Incheon Airport, the world’s most family friendly airport; Tokyo's Haneda Airport, the world’s cleanest airport; and the Istanbul Airport, for the world’s best airport dining experience.

Hotel Colline de France in Brazil Crowned Best in the World; Shore Hotel in California Named Best in the US

NEEDHAM, Mass. , April 23, 2024 /PRNewswire/ -- Today, Tripadvisor, the world's largest travel guidance platform, unveiled the elite group of winners of its annual Travelers' Choice Best of the Best Hotels Awards, celebrating this year's highest rated hotels in the world based on Tripadvisor reviews. Leading the pack, achieving the No. 1 Top Hotel in the World designation, is Brazil's Hotel Colline de France , a boutique hotel renowned for its personalized service and French elegance in the middle of the mountain town of Gramado.

Tripadvisor's Best of the Best hotels are among the top one percent of the 1.6 million hotel listings on Tripadvisor. For three consecutive years, the 34-suite Hotel Colline de France has been ranked in the top five, boasting more than 4,000 5-star bubble reviews.

On the heels of the 2024 Travelers' Choice Awards Best Destinations and Best Beaches, announced in January and February respectively, the 2024 Travelers' Choice Best of the Best Hotel Awards are part of Tripadvisor's larger Travelers' Choice Award umbrella, shining a light on travelers' favorite experiences around the world. This year, pet-friendly, sustainable, and wellness hotels are the newest subcategory introductions.

"Our Best of the Best Hotels are marvels, acclaimed by thousands of travelers for their remarkable service, stunning design, and wealth of amenities that redefine what it means to have an exceptional hotel experience," said Dan Mitchell , vice president & general manager hotels, Tripadvisor.

The No. 1 hotel in the US is the Shore Hotel. The thoughtfully designed, eco-friendly boutique hotel is located in the heart of Santa Monica, Calif. , offering ocean views and walkability to the world-famous Santa Monica Pier. With over 6,000 reviews, guests say they appreciate the hotel's contemporary feel, premium amenities and personalized attention they received from the staff.

The Travelers' Choice Best of the Best Awards are determined based on the quality and quantity of traveler reviews and ratings specific to each subcategory posted on Tripadvisor over the 12-month period from January 1, 2023 through December 31, 2023 .

New Hotel Award Categories for 2024 Tripadvisor introduced three new award subcategories for 2024, including best pet-friendly, sustainable, and wellness hotels, reflecting consumer demand and recent travel trends.

Pet-Friendly: Our four-legged friends deserve top-notch accommodations, too! Tripadvisor is proud to launch the new hotel subcategory in partnership with CESAR® Canine Cuisine, part of the Mars, Incorporated family of brands, that's helping to make the world a more dog-friendly place.  The top pet-friendly hotel in the world is Hotel Fioreze Quero Quero in Brazil , which boasts over 2 acres of open space for you and your furry best friend to explore.

The No. 1 pet-friendly hotel in the US is the Hyatt Centric Las Olas Fort Lauderdale which allows pets on every floor and in the outdoor garden sitting area, so they too can bask in the Florida sunshine.

"We believe that the best life is shared between dogs and pet parents, so we are excited to help unlock more experiences of togetherness between people and their pets,." said Jean-Paul Jansen , senior vice president of marketing, Mars Petcare North America . "This new pet-friendly category is such a great way to spotlight more destinations where dogs and pet parents are welcomed together on their travel adventures."

Sustainable: While hotels across the globe are making collective efforts to become more sustainable, hotels dedicated to reducing their environmental footprint in unexpected ways are capturing traveler attention. In the category of sustainable hotels on Tripadvisor, Buahan a Banyan Tree Escape in Bali garnered the most traveler excitement, ensuring its place as the No. 1 sustainable hotel in the world. Guests are astounded by the luxury jungle resort's "no walls, no doors" design, breathtaking views, sustainably grown food and exceptional service.

Wellness: With increased awareness around self-care and well-being, consumers are seeking more balance in their lives. Finding a hotel that meets this need is a great way to recharge whether you are traveling or staying local.

The Emerald Maldives Resort & Spa tops the list of the best wellness hotels in the world. This all-inclusive sanctuary with a vibrant atmosphere is characterized by themed nights and cultural immersion. Deemed an "oasis of bliss," the resort offers a full spa, gym and sports center, diving center, water center, and more.

Methodology   The 2024 Travelers' Choice Best of the Best Hotel Awards are determined based on the quality and quantity of traveler reviews and ratings posted on Tripadvisor over the 12-month period between January 1 and December 31, 2023 , as well as an additional editorial process.

Tripadvisor is proud to serve a broad and diverse community of travelers from all over the world. As such, Tripadvisor reserves the right to determine the eligibility of any property, business, destination or point of interest listed on Tripadvisor for an award based on additional factors that reflect Tripadvisor corporate policies and values. For more details on Tripadvisor's awards policy, see here .

Sustainable Methodology Tripadvisor partnered with sustainability management company BeCause to collate data detailing hotels that had been certified by at least one of a number of Global Sustainable Tourism Council and Travalyst approved organizations between January 1, 2023 and December 31, 2023 . Tripadvisor defined 70 sustainability terms and phrases such as "environmentally friendly", "refillable", "eco-tourism", and "waste reduction" and identified relevant reviews from the 12 month period. After ranking the hotels, Tripadvisor used digital listening tool Brandwatch to analyze approximately 23,954 Tripadvisor English-language reviews between January and December 2023 for certified hotels that not only mentioned sustainability, but also had a Tripadvisor bubble rating of 4 above. This allowed the identification of destinations in order of rank, starting with the destination with the highest percentage (%) of reviews discussing sustainability amongst all reviews of that destination. Please see the full methodology here .

Travelers’ Choice Awards 2024 reveal the top hotels in the U.S.

Three new categories are included this year

The reviewers have spoken: Tripadvisor has revealed the 2024 Travelers’ Choice Best of the Best Hotel Awards. The awards, given to the top one percent of the 1.6 million hotel listings on Tripadvisor, represent the absolute best places to stay in the world. While no U.S. hotels made the cut for best in the world, the best U.S. hotels are certainly high in the rankings. The awards this year also include three new best hotel categories: pet-friendly, sustainable and wellness-focused.

The number one hotel in the U.S. is the Shore Hotel in Santa Monica. Located within walking distance from the Santa Monica Pier, this eco-friendly boutique hotel offers ocean views, premium amenities, and personalized attention from staff. At number two is the Luma Hotel in Times Square, followed by FivePine Lodge & Spa in Oregon, The Bryant Park Hotel in NYC and Hotel Emma in San Antonio.

The awards are also given in categories including luxury, B&Bs and inns, family-friendly, and more. New this year are the awards given to the best pet-friendly hotels, most sustainable hotels, and hotels with a focus on wellness. The best pet-friendly hotel in the U.S. is Hyatt Centric Las Olas Fort Lauderdale. Pets are on every floor and in the outdoor garden sitting area. No U.S. hotel has made it to the top 10 list for wellness or sustainability, but the awards are bucket-list worthy for international travel.

"Our Best of the Best Hotels are marvels, acclaimed by thousands of travelers for their remarkable service, stunning design, and wealth of amenities that redefine what it means to have an exceptional hotel experience," said Dan Mitchell, vice president and general manager hotels, Tripadvisor.

The Travelers' Choice Best of the Best Awards are determined based on the quality and quantity of traveler reviews and ratings posted on Tripadvisor over the 12-month period from January 1, 2023 through December 31, 2023. View all the awards for Best of the Best Hotels in all categories here .
