Visiting Koufonisia: About Koufonisia

Located in the Aegean Sea and forming part of the Greek Cyclades islands, Koufonisia is a small cluster, made of up three islands: Ano (or Pano) Koufonisi (Upper Koufonisi), Kato Koufonisi (Lower Koufonisi), and Keros.

Ano Koufonisi is the only one of the three that remains inhabited, whilst Kato Koufonisi is largely uninhabited but can still be frequented by tourists, especially as a day trip for those looking to explore the serene landscapes found here. Keros, on the other hand, is a protected archaeological site, is also uninhabited and known for its historic and significant ancient Cycladic art findings.

Koufonisia Travel Guide – How to Get to Koufonisia

When it comes to reaching the tranquil shores of Koufonisia, most travellers would travel via the mainland, connecting the vibrant capital of Athens to this Aegean gem. Whether you prefer the leisurely pace of ferry travel or the swift convenience of domestic flights, Koufonisia’s allure is easily within your reach with proper planning and foresight.

Let’s delve into the details of how to embark on this journey from Athens to Koufonisia by ferry, as well as the alternative route through domestic flights:

By Ferry: Navigating the Aegean Waters

Direct Route from Piraeus Port :

By far one of the most popular methods of travel would be by ferry, a regular and reliable connection exists between Koufonisia and Piraeus Port, the main gateway of Athens. During the peak summer months ferries operate almost daily between Koufonisia and Athens.

Duration of the Ferry Trip :

The duration of your ferry journey can vary based on your choice of vessel. A high-speed ferry may whisk you across the seas in around 5 hours, while a regular ferry journey might extend to around 8 hours.

On our journey to Koufonisia we opted for the Hellenic Seaways, Highspeed 4 ferry which I can highly recommend. Seats were very comfortable, the ferry quite large, and with good facilities onboard including a snack bar too.

Unfortunately, on the return we did not plan our dates properly and since we visited right at the beginning of June ferry schedules were just starting up for the season. This meant that we had to endure an agonizing 8 hour return journey on a much smaller SeaJets ferry.

I would definitely recommend against doing such a trip. We were quite lucky that the sea was quite still but if the winds pick up and the waters start getting choppy, this ferry would be a total nightmare for those that suffer from motion sickness as you’ll be feeling every bump and sway along the way.

Connections with Cycladic Islands :

In addition to Piraeus, Koufonisia is also well connected to other Cycladic islands, which is great for those wanting to embark on a true Greek island-hopping experience .

Ferries also ply the waters connecting Koufonisia to other Greek islands such as Naxos, Paros, Santorini,Schinoussa, Iraklia, and Amorgos, to name a few.

Local Ferry from Naxos and Amorgos :

Among these island connections, the “ Express Skopelitis ” ferry stands out as a vital link, departing from Naxos, Iraklia, and Amorgos to Koufonisia. This local ferry embarks almost daily, offering seamless connections not only to Koufonisia but also to the other islands within the Small Cyclades group.

And with prices as little as under €10 per one-way journey, it’s great value for money too!

Book this and other ferries directly here on Ferryhopper.com , our preferred ferry booking site!

Where to Stay in Koufonisia in Greece

While Koufonisia is by no means one of the larger islands you’ll find in Greece , due to its ever increasing popularity over the last few years, as more travelers discover this gem, there are ample choices for good, quality accommodation.

In exploring the options for your Koufonisia stay, you’ll discover that the majority of accommodations are nestled in or around Chora, the island’s main village. This charming Cycladic village is a hub of activity, offering a glimpse into local life while providing easy access to all the island has to offer you.

Below are some of our recommended hotels and accommodation that will enhance your stay in Koufonisia, including the self-catering apartment villa we stayed at – Sohoro:

Sohoro Koufonisia – Recommended – Where we stayed!

As we were three friends traveling together to Koufonisia and planned to mostly dine out during our stay, we opted for a self-catering option. Granted, we did book the trip at the very last minute, a few weeks ahead of time, but we were so lucky to scoop an amazing deal on our accommodation.

We opted to stay at the self-catering villa, Sohoro, only a few hundred meters from the main port and Chora and with stunning views out over Kato Koufonisi. It offered us an upstairs unit that consisted of the upstairs being complete with a fully equipped kitchen, and an open plan living and dining room that led out to a covered balcony.

Downstairs were two large rooms, one with a double bed, and another with two single beds and a roll out bed if required. There was also one bathroom with a shower.

We stayed in the Villa Makares unit and were really happy with our choice given the size and comfort that this unit offered. Not the most modern, but still very well appointed and with cleaning included, it was an excellent choice for us.

Added to that was the amazing hospitality of the owner Yiannis and his wife. Despite them barely speaking any English (top tip, be sure to learn some handy Greek phrases before your visit!), we were still able to communicate and Yiannis made sure that we had everything we needed during our stay. We even bumped into them on two occasions while dining out for dinner and on the first instance Yiannis even bought us a round of drinks.

It’s these small acts of hospitality that still blows me away, no matter where we travel throughout Greece!

Getting Around on Koufonisia

Koufonisia is a fairly small island and with the Chora and most beaches located on the south-easter part of the island, getting around on foot is pretty straightforward.

The island’s road network might not be extensive, but then again, you’ll not be traveling much by car here. There are no car rental options on the island itself and cars are limited. It’s mainly the accommodation providers that offer transfers, and local residents that may travel by car.

With that being said, here’s a rundown of the options that await you:

Taxis and Private Transfers

There is really only one taxi service operation on the island in cases where you may absolutely need an island transfer. But we’ve honestly not used this service at all during our stay.

To arrange a taxi, simply dial 0030 694 5042 548 and schedule your pick-up.

When it comes to private transfers, most accommodation properties will offer you a pickup from the Ferry port which is right by the Chora too. In fact, our accommodation was a mere 450 meters from the Ferry port (a short 5 minute walk), but our host Yiannis still included a free pick up for the 2 minute journey by car.

Bicycle Adventures

For an authentic island experience, cycling is the go-to choice for many visitors. Bicycles are a very popular means of transport, allowing you to leisurely explore every corner of Koufonisia.

Here you’ll find both regular and electric bikes so you can whizz around on the island without too much effort. On our trip we opted one day on the regular bikes so we could do a leisurely cycle to Fanos beach.

We also embarked on an electric bike adventure so we could cycle all the way to Pori beach, and we are so glad we did. The road to Pori includes some insane uphill roads and we were all very thankful for the much-needed electric boost getting up and over those.

We rented our bikes from Bike Rental Koufonisia which is conveniently located on the road you would use to Walk to Finikas and Fanos beaches. It is one of the last buildings on the left as you exit the Chora on this road and you cannot miss it as they have tons of bikes stacked out on the pavement.

For the non-motorized bikes we paid around €7.50 whilst the electric bikes set us back around €20 per day (the latter of which was a discount price when paying in cash).

As the island is compact, walking is not only effortless and swift but also incredibly pleasurable.

Moving from one enchanting spot to another is a delightful experience, offering you a closer connection to the island’s essence and panoramic vistas. Needless to say, we definitely got our step count during our week-long stay on the island.

Almost everything you need is condensed to the southeastern tip of the island where the Chora is located, although the walk to Finikas, Fanos, or even Pori beach is a bit further along. On foot Fanos beach is roughly 30 minutes from the center of the Chora, and from there Pori beach is an additional 30 minutes along the coastline too.

Sea Bus Excursions

Pori Beach Koufonisia by seabus - © Photo by Travel-Boo

During the summer months, a sea bus operates too, adding to your travel options on the island. This sea bus facilitates routes to specific destinations on both Ano and Kato Koufonisi.

On Ano Koufonisi in particular, the boat departs several times per day connecting the Chora to Italida/Fanos beaches as its first stop, and then Pori beach as the second stop. You pay around €7.50 for a return ticket valid for the full day.

You can also embark on a day trip to Kato Koufonisi for those who want to hike and explore this stunning island and its beaches too.

These boat trips depart from the main port where the ferries arrive and depart to and from. The port is not very big, so you honestly cannot miss it. There is a small booth usually manned all-day long by an assistant. Here you can buy your tickets for these boat trips and also get more information regarding departure times too.

5 Top Things to Do in Koufonisia

In Koufonisia, the charm lies in its modest size and unspoiled ambiance, offering a selection of activities that embrace the island’s tranquility and authenticity. While the range of options might be limited due to its size and a deliberate preservation of its natural beauty, you’ll still find enough to see and do here to fill up your travel days.

Below are our recommended activities for you:

Explore the stunning beaches of Koufonisia

It goes without saying that with crystal-clear turquoise waters and golden sand, the beaches of Koufonisia are without a doubt the main attraction.

Whether you’re looking for a remote cove, or sandy expanses with beautifully clear waters and all the amenities you’ll need, there is a beach to suit all preferences.

For more information on the best beaches in Koufonisia (including both Ano and Kato Koufonisi) check out our beach recommendations further down on this post.

Take a boat to Kato Koufonisi

Kato Koufonisi is largely uninhabited, although there is one home with residents who live permanently on the island. Due to this, the island offers a real untouched beauty.

You may opt to take the boat that departs regularly from the port of Ano Koufonisi, offering you the chance to explore the pristine beaches and caves of this lesser-known island. See down below for our recommendations of the best beaches in Kato Koufonisi.

Other boat tours also offer excursions to Kato Koufonisi and often include stops for swimming and snorkeling, and some even offer traditional Greek meals prepared on board. The natural scenery and relaxed pace of these tours provide a unique opportunity to truly disconnect and enjoy the beauty of the Cyclades.

Explore the Chora

St. Georges Church - Koufonisia Chora - © Photo by Travel-Boo

The charming Chora is located in the heart of Koufonisia, with narrow alleys, traditional architecture, and friendly locals. Walking through the village offers a glimpse into the everyday life of the island’s inhabitants.

Visitors can explore small boutiques selling a variety of both local and boutique products, perfect to snap up a few memorable Greek souvenirs , enjoy a Greek frappe at a traditional café, or dine at one of the family-run tavernas too.

Although you won’t find may famous Greek landmarks here, you can visit a few of the beautiful churches scattered throughout the island, including St. George’s Church, and the quaint Agios Nektarios Church.

While the Chora is not that big, you can still spend a lazy morning or afternoon getting lost in this gorgeous town!

Delight in traditional Greek cuisine

Greek Salad - What to eat in Koufonisia - © Photo by Travel-Boo

For obvious reasons, one of the must-try activities in Koufonisia in Greece is savoring the island’s fresh fish and other delectable Greek foodie offerings.

Many of the island’s residents are primarily fishermen, and as such freshly caught fish and high-quality seafood is a staple of the local cuisine found in Koufonisia.

Here you’ll find numerous charming fish taverns lining the seaside, each offering a delightful dining experience against the vast backdrop of the Aegean blue. These taverns are the perfect places to explore the local culture and indulge in traditional Cycladic dishes made from the finest and freshest ingredients sourced directly from the surrounding waters.

Of course, you can also expect some more well-known classic and delicious Greek dishes too. Check out our section down below on what and where to eat in Koufonisia!

Hiking on Koufonisia

If you’re spending a couple of days on the island, then exploring nearby Keros Island is another great suggestion for a day trip when visiting Koufonisia, Greece.

Keros is known for its characteristic white fine-grain marble, adding a touch of unique beauty to the landscape. However, it’s essential to be aware that Keros has no drinkable water, so you must prepare accordingly for your visit.

To reach Keros Island, you have two options: you can either take your boat or hire an excursion boat. While visiting, keep in mind that staying overnight is prohibited by the Archaeological Authority, so plan for a day trip to fully experience the island’s wonders.

What and Where to Eat in Koufonisia

Savouring the culinary delights of Koufonisia is an essential part of experiencing the true essence of this group of idyllic Greek islands. Offering a tantalizing array of traditional Greek dishes that embody the flavors of the Mediterranean, you’ll definitely not leave here hungry. In fact, you may gain.

On our trip we opted to dine out pretty much every day and were able to enjoy a range from freshly caught seafood to locally sourced ingredients. Here’s a glimpse into our top and most favourite Greek foods we enjoyed and suggest you sample while exploring the beauty of Koufonisia.

Fresh Seafood Delicacies: Given their maritime setting, Koufonisia boasts an abundance of seafood delights. Feast on succulent grilled octopus, tender calamari, and mouthwatering fish, all caught just a stone’s throw away from the azure waters. The simplicity of preparation highlights the natural flavors of the catch, leaving a real lasting impression on your taste buds.

Ladenia: A Cycladic specialty, ladenia is a delicious Greek flatbread topped with ripe tomatoes, onions, and fragrant herbs like oregano. Drizzled with olive oil and baked until golden, this savory delight captures the essence of Mediterranean cuisine and is likened to the Greek version of a pizza.

Greek Salads: Not a single day went by on our 7 night stay that we didn’t indulge in the quintessential Greek salad, or horiatiki, bursting with colors and flavors. Fresh tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, onions, olives, and creamy feta cheese are adorned with a generous drizzle of olive oil and a sprinkle of oregano. It’s a refreshing and healthy dish that’s perfect for a sunny island day.

Tip: Be sure to ask for the local cheese when enjoying a Greek salad in Koufonisia. It’s a mouthwatering, creamy cheese that really elevates the salad in my opinion, definitely a must-try!

Taramasalata - © Photo by Travel-Boo

Taramasalata and Tzatziki: As for appetizers you cannot go wrong with taramasalata, another of our favourites! It’s a creamy dip made from fish roe, and you can enjoy it alongside a frensh tzatziki, a yogurt-based dip infused with garlic and cucumber. Pair them with warm pita bread for a delightful start to your meal.

Moussaka: If there is one Greek dish I cannot say no to, then it has to be the iconic Greek comfort dish that features layers of eggplant, minced meat, and creamy béchamel sauce, all baked to perfection. The hearty flavors and satisfying textures make moussaka a must-try culinary adventure.

Saganaki: Indulge in the crispy goodness of saganaki, which comprises cheeses that are breaded and fried until golden and gooey. The salty and savory flavors are complemented by a drizzle of lemon juice, creating a delicious taste sensation.

Baklava: Last but certainly not least, conclude your culinary journey with a touch of sweetness through baklava. This decadent dessert consists of layers of flaky pastry, chopped nuts, and a sweet syrup or honey glaze, resulting in a rich and satisfying finale to your meal.

Apart from these Greek classics, you may be surprised to also find an array of other culinary food types on the island too. In fact, we had some of the best pizzas (approved by our Italian friend who traveled with us) and other Italian dishes too. This is likely due to the island’s popularity with Italian tourists.

Here also is a list of our suggested places to eat on the island:

Tzet was undoubtedly one of our favourite restaurants on the island and conveniently located close to our accommodation. This Mediterranean restaurant boasted the best pizza I have probably ever had outside of Italy (and this was confirmed as authentic and approved by our Italian friend, Valentina).

The decor is modern, fresh, and quintessential Greek and offers you an upscale yet laid back vibe. The service was equally on point with all the servers being extremely attentive and friendly.

Fanos Studios & Seaside – Fanos beach bar & restaurant

Whenever we visited Fanos, Finikas, or even Pori beach, we made sure to stop by the restaurant and bar located on Fanos beach for lunch. Not only was the service amazing, so much that the waiter started calling us by name each time we returned, but the food was great too!

Here I would highly recommend the Greek salad, this was my all-time favourite on the island and one portion is absolutely huge and can be an entire meal on its own!

This was probably our second favourite place on the island. Serving a range of Italian dishes and craft beers and wines, what really stands out is the service by the team working here, who became our friends by the end of our stay – Ivo & Michalis.

Add to that the incredible views out over the stunning clear waters and you have a winning combination. This was honestly one of our top places to go for a great relaxing meal, taking in the beauty of the island!

Souvlaki Sti Strofi

Known for the best Gyros on Koufonisia (and apparently considered one of the top 5 in Greece) this hole in the wall is an extremely popular choice. It’s mainly for take-away as they only have one or two tables along the street, but believe me when I say, people queue to get their hands on these Gyros.

Last, but definitely not least, was Ca Chi Ca, our absolute favourite bar and restaurant on the island, and with a near perfect rating on Google, it’s no wonder.

During our stay we made friends with the owners of this chic bar. It’s a small space but tastefully decorated and boasting a trendy, modern vibe.

Although Koufonisia is not known to be one of the top Greek party islands , Ca Chi Ca and a few other spots on the island does boast a vibrant and fun night out too!

While they don’t have a large seating area, you can grab a seat at one of the tables and sample some of the food here too. We had bao buns that were simply delicious!!

Needless to say, by the end of our stay we were invited over for a free round of shots as a farewell from the two owners, a true testament to Greek hospitality!

Best Beaches in Koufonisia

Koufonisia is home to several beaches. These beaches are so stunning and definitely a reason for visiting the island. Another reason why Koufonisia is now one our favourite and best Greek islands worth visiting !

Here we’ve rounded up 7 famous beaches that you’ll no doubt enjoy on your upcoming trip to Koufinisia.

Pori Beach - © Photo by Travel-Boo

Considered to be the longest beach in Pano Koufonisi, Pori stands out as one of the most beautiful spots on the island.

Nestled within a spacious bay, Pori Beach is approximately a 45-minute walk from the Chora, making it one of the more remote beaches compared to the main town. Alternatively, you can opt for a quick boat trip from the port to reach this pristine destination, which is exactly what we did the first time we visited.

On our second visit we opted to rent some electric bicycles and cycled the way there, which was a great way to explore some more remote parts of the island that you wouldn’t normally get to see.

The beach itself is a long stretch of white sandy beach and is in my opinion the most beautiful on the island for sure. Due to its proximity, on the north east of the island, it is somewhat less protected than other beaches and on both visits it was quite windy, which can be the only drawback to spending a day here.

The beach itself does not have many amenities. There is one beach bar, which sadly, I would not recommend. We did buy some drinks there and they do offer toilet facilities, but their prices were insanely high when we visited. I nearly fell of the chair when I saw they were advertising a Moussaka for €19 when you can get a decent Moussaka in the Chora for around €9!

Ammos Beach

Ammos Beach - © Photo by Travel-Boo

What sets Ammos Beach apart is its location, thanks to its convenient proximity to the comforts of Chora, the main town. With all your necessities within easy reach, you can fully indulge in the tranquil beauty of the beach without compromising on convenience.

The waters and view of Keros and Kato Koufonisi is simply gorgeous, but it is worth mentioning that the beach and sand itself is not that great. It’s a wide open flat expanse of dense sand and towards the back also acts as a main intersection for cars too. There’s honestly not that much traffic, but this may make the beach less appealing for some.

Having said that, if you do want a chilled day at the beach and still want close proximity to the town, then it’s a great option!

In fact, we spent a day here but opted to rent a sunlounger at the Lefteris Seaside Restaurant, located right opposite the beach. While we didn’t eat here, we did order some drinks and were able to make use of their toilet facilities too. I found this option way more comfortable for a day at Ammos beach!

Finikas Beach

This beach, also known as Harakopou, is another stunning gem among the beaches of Pano Koufonisi. This beach also boasts signature turquoise waters and soft golden sands that define the beauty of the Koufonisia isles.

The beach is a long stretch of sand and also boasts a beach bar too. We honestly did not spend too much time on this beach and only really passed along it to get to nearby Fanos Beach. But it’s still a great choice if you want to avoid the more popular beaches along this stretch of coast.

Fanos Beach

Fanos Beach - Best beaches in Koufonisia - © Photo by Travel-Boo

We loved spending time on Fanos beach and it was definitely our go-to choice. It offers a long stretch of soft golden/white sand that also connects up to Italida.

The scattered tamarisk trees offer a natural shade, providing a cozy spot to relax and unwind while immersing yourself in the tranquility of the surroundings. The beach looks directly out at the imposing Keros island , and you can definitely spend hours staring at the views, or taking a dip in the refreshing waters.

If you prefer additional comfort, you’ll find sunbeds and umbrellas available for rental at the beach bar and restaurant. As previously mentioned, the beach bar was one of our favourite spots to enjoy a bite to eat, especially the delicious Greek salad!!

Italida Beach

Italida Beach is known for being one of the nudist-friendly beaches on the Koufonisia Isles. Its tranquil atmosphere and secluded location make it a preferred spot for those seeking a more liberating and natural beach experience.

For snorkeling aficionados, Italida Beach provides more rock coves to explore, inviting you to discover the underwater wonders and marine life that thrive here.

To get to Italida, you can walk along the shores of Fanos beach and then follow the cliff path until you reach nearby Italida. It’s a really short and easy walk over to the beach and you’ll have some stunning views looking back at Fanos beach as you walk along the cliff edge.

Ludiko Beach

A short two-minute walk down from our accommodation, Sohoro, was a little hidden gem called Ludiko beach. While this mainly pebbled beach may not exactly be the most comfortable to lie on, it’s absolutely gorgeous and is a stunning secluded beach where you can stop to admire an amazing Aegean sunset from!

Detis Beach

Heading over to Kato Koufonisi now, Detis Beach, is another great gem in Koufonisia. Situated within a small bay, this beach delights visitors with its shallow, turquoise waters and soft, fluffy white sand.

The presence of neat rock formations as well as hidden caves and crannies, add a touch of wonder and seclusion to the landscape.

The tranquil waters of Detis Beach are protected from the wind, creating an ideal setting for snorkeling enthusiasts. Exploring the underwater world here promises an array of delightful marine life and underwater wonders to discover.

Bottom Line: Is Kuofinisia worth your travel time?

We definitely recommend you add Koufonisia to your bucket list of places to travel in Greece.

Considered a hidden Greek paradise, Koufonisia offers serenity and privacy which you will not find in other islands. So stop having second thoughts and set a date to visit Koufonisia in Greece.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is koufonisia located.

Set in the Aegean Sea, Koufonisia is a group of small islands in the Cyclades archipelago and located southeast of Naxos and west of Amorgos. The two main islands in the group are Pano Koufonisi (Upper Koufonisi) and Kato Koufonisi (Lower Koufonisi).

What is the best time to visit Koufonisia?

The best time to visit Koufonisia is September, according to the locals. During this time, the yearly August winds have subsided, resulting in calmer seas. The days remain warm, while the refreshing Autumn breeze brings cool evenings.

Having said that, you may also consider traveling at the beginning of June too, this is the time we chose. It’s the start of the season and I somehow found the locals to be refreshed and ready to welcome visitors to the island. While we did experience some windy days (hey, this is the Cyclades after all!), it was still fairly pleasant and we did experience our fair share of warm and balmy days yet cooler nights too!

How long should you plan to stay in Koufonisia?

If you’re embarking on an island hopping adventure in Greece and want to visit several different islands, then I would say a minimum of 3 nights would be on Koufonisia.

While the island is small, you would not want to miss out on some of the beautiful beaches here and we guarantee you that you’ll fall in love instantly and wish you were staying for longer.

We spent a blissful 7 nights here, but our holiday was really centered around enjoying a slower travel experience, and this amount of time was perfect! We could have honestly stayed even longer, but 7 nights was absolutely perfect in our opinion as it gave us enough time to try out different restaurants, things to do, and also get to see most of the beaches here.

Is Koufonisia suitable for families with kids?

Yes, Koufonisia is a family-friendly destination. The beaches have shallow and calm waters, making them safe for children to swim and play. The island’s relaxed atmosphere and lack of heavy traffic also contribute to a family-friendly environment.

Is there a bank or ATM in Koufonisia?

Yes, there are one or two ATMs in Koufonisia. One ATM is conveniently located next to the post office, providing a convenient option for visitors to access cash during their stay on the island.

However, it’s always a good idea to carry some cash with you, as not all establishments may accept credit cards. We took a combination of cash and also used our cards. Most restaurants and the local convenience store also accepted card payments too which was very convenient.

Can I use credit cards on Koufonisia?

Yes, credit cards are widely accepted in Koufonisia and throughout your travels in Greece. Most stores and restaurants on the island will gladly accept cards but most likely would prefer to be paid in cash for smaller purchases under €20, although they would likely still accept cards grudgingly.

However, it is still wise to take some cash too for those instances where you may not be able to pay by card. Also make sure to check beforehand if the restaurant or store accepts the type of card you intend to pay with. Throughout Europe, Visa and Mastercard are widely accepted, but you may find some establishments don’t accept Amex or Diners Club cards as payment methods.

Visiting Koufonisia is a true immersion into a world of tranquil beauty and authentic Greek island life. Whether you are exploring the rustic charm of Ano Koufonisia or bask in the serene and secluded shores of Kato Koufonisia, these twin islands offer an escape from the ordinary.

As you wander through the narrow streets, savour the local Greek delicacies, and dip your toes into the crystal-clear waters, you’ll immediately feel the stresses of today’s bustling world melt away. Koufonisia Travel Guide: An Authentic Greek Island Experience

It’s one the gems of the Cyclades in Greek Islands . This full Koufonisia travel guide has got all you need to know about one of the most interesting getaways in your Greek island hopping trip.

Tucked away between the massive heavy weights of tourism, Mykonos and Santorini , Koufonisia , it’s a tiny and remote island with some of the espetacular beaches and swimming spots in Europe. Or in other words, Koufonisia is an off the beaten track paradise, perfect to relax mind and body in a gorgeous Mediterranean setting.

I’ve traveled to Koufonisia as part of a 2-week itinerary in Greece and I’ve updated it with the most up-to-date and reliable information for you to start planning your trip. Tips about how to get to the island, what to do, budget, and more.

Koufonosia overview.

First things first. Koufonisia or Koufonissi is NOT a single island. It actually refers to actually 3 different islands located in the eastern end of the Cyclades archipelago:

– Pano Koufonissi , populated, with tourist facilities and where the ferries arrive – Kato Koufonissi , which is almost uninhabited and visited only for a day trip from Pano Koufonissi – Keros , also uninhabited

So even though we’re technically refering to 3 islands, everyone uses the term Koufonisia to describe Pano Koufonissi . I’ll do the same. From now on, Koufonisia = Pano Koufonissi.

Koufonisia has managed to escape through the rain drops and live on the shadows of its intimidating neighbours Mykonos , Naxos and Santorini .

Here’s my Koufonisia map with the main beaches, sights and restaurants to get you started.

What to expect from Koufonisia

Koufonisia is a VERY quiet and tranquil place. The rhythm here is different and might take a day or two to adapt. There’s isn’t much going and the main places of interest are located in the south and east coasts of the island.

But that’s exactly people go there. No crazy nightclubs, “international” restaurants or posh fashion bloggers in their neon dresses on the quest for their next Instagram hit.

It’s perfect for a romantic getaway or a off-the-grid kind of vacation.

The land is arid and rocky all around the island. Along the coast, rocky inlets provide small refugees for a perfect day of relaxing and sunbathing.

The few low-key beach bars of the island provide just what you need to keep it going: shade, inexpensive typical Greek food and frappé , the typical coffee-based drink that seems to go well with any moment in this country.

There’s only about 400 people living in Koufonisia, almost all with a strong fishing heritage. Koufonisia owns the largest fishing fleet in Greece in proportion to their population.

How to get to Koufonisia

The island doesn’t have a functional airport, and the closest one is located in the neighboring island of Naxos , which receives mostly domestic flights.

So the only way to get to Koufonisia is by ferry. There wasn’t a direct ferry to the island until about some years ago, but fortunately for us things have changed by now.

There are frequent connections from other islands in the Cyclades – Santorini , Naxos , Amargos and Mykonos . You can also hop on a high-speed ship from Piraeus port, in Athens .

From what I could experience, ferries in Greece worked pretty well and some of them are enjoyable experiences. Don’t expect any luxury, but hit the outdoor deck and enjoy the sea breeze. You’ll be fine.

If you plan to visit the Greek islands for winter holidays, the good news is that there are ferries operating all year round. That said, some schedules and ferry connections stop after the middle starting from October and most ferries depart from Piraeus port.

My experience getting to Koufonisia

Bought my tickets online, with a couple weeks in advance. I arrived Koufonisia coming on a SeaJets ferry from Santorini-Thira port. The ferry did a couple of quick stops along the way – in Amorgos island – which actually was quite pleasant as the views are beautiful.

Online SeaJets reviews talk about the constant delays and how they treat people like “cattle”. Maybe I was lucky but I feel it was pretty decent. While it was not by any means a luxury experience, the seats were comfortable and it even got on time to the destination. Can’t complain!

We went to Mykonos after Koufonisia and while there is also a SeaJets ferry, we decided to take a 2 leg-journey with a stop in Naxos . For the Koufonisia-Naxos leg, we hopped on one of the last journeys of the Express Skopelitis , a famous ferry that served the islands of the Small Cyclades for centuries. It’s no longer in operation.

Best time to visit Koufonisia

With average temperatures of 20C and higher, anywhere between May and October is a good time to visit Koufonisia .

If you’re looking for hot beach weather, the best season would be starting slightly later, from June. However like in most Europe, the peak summer months – July and August – bring herds of visitors. I imagine in these months the local-tourist ratio can reach uncomfortable levels. To be fair, with 400 locals, any small increase in tourism feels unreasonable.

My weather experience in Koufonisia

I visited Koufonisia in early September . The temperatures were pretty high (30C+) during the day, but balanced by a light breeze at night. For the 5 days we stayed there, we could hardly see a cloud.

The island didn’t feel crowded, but maybe it was because we did arrive from a crazy busy Santorini . People tend to gather around beaches with infrastructure nearby (bars, restaurants) and more remote small coves and bays were almost desert.

⚠️ There are VERY FEW hotels in Koufonisia. It’s advisable to your place ahead. ⚠️

Getting around koufonisia.

Koufonisia is so tiny you could technically walk around the island in a single day (don’t do that though, it can get too hot). You most definitely don’t need a car here.

Most travelers arrive in Koufonisia Port and from there to most hotels in town is a short walk. Our hotel had a funny 30-second ride transfer included.

We rented a bike for one of the days to explore the rest of the island, but some of the hills proved hard to conquer, specially on the west of Koufonisia town. My advice: make sure you get a good bike.

In short here are your options:

  • Rent a motorbike or quad bike. These seem to be pretty common in the Cyclades, but in Koufonisia is hard to find. Prices start at 20EUR/day.
  • Rent a bike. We got quoted anywhere between 3-7 EUR/day.
  • Boat. There is a daily service connecting the main port and some strategic beach stops of the island all the way to Pori Beach .

Beaches in Koufonisia 🏖️

Koufonisia Travel Guide Quiet Beach

I can’t imagine someone heading to Koufonisia and not thinking of hitting the beaches. Beaches there are some amongst the most dreamy you can find in Europe, including naturist ones.

Compared to Mykonos or Santorini , beaches here are NOT organized (fortunately) so you don’t need to pay for sun-beds to secure your spot. Just bring your umbrella and choose your favorite place.

Ammos Beach

Usually the first point of contact with the island, since it is right next to the port. This is where you usually get impressed with the vibrant turquoise color of the water. The traditionally Greek white-and-blue houses and the many fishing boats floating around create a postcard scenery.

But believe it or not, this is actually the least paradisiac of the beaches in Koufonisia .

About 3,5km northeast of the Chora (main town) this is one of the best in the island. Shallow crystal clear waters and a strip of moon-shaped soft sand. It’s a safe bet for a beach day trip.

Fanos Beach

Sandy small beach, about 1,5km east of Chora. There’s a (great!) restaurant and beach bar nearby as well as some coves and bays to explore. Great views overlooking Kato Koufonissi island.

Finikas Beach

Also called Charokopou , this beach is very close to Fanos and it’s still in a walking distance from Chora . It’s a long, sandy beach with unreal water.

Platia Pounda Beach

Boasting both sandy and rocky sections, this is the most frequented beach of the island. Again, crystal clear water awaits you. Also known as Italida Beach.

Other beaches and swimming spots in Koufonisia 🏊‍♂️

  • Nero Beach , the best beach in Kato Koufonissi island. There are boat trips heading here from Koufonisia (Chora).
  • Gala Beach , a super small pebbled beach enclosed by cliffs. The name means milk in Greek and it comes from the waves bursting onto the rocks.
  • Caves (before Pori) , if you fancy a rocky swim, try these small narrow gulfs with openings on the rocks. People just jump from several rocks into the sea and the Pisina area is specially popular. Impressive water color!

Things to do in Koufonisia

Got to be honest here and say there isn’t any particularly exciting sight or attraction to see. There’s not much to do either apart from working on your tan. That’s fine, that’s actually the dream vacation for many. To be fair, the dolce far niente is one of the best things Koufonisia has to offer!

Still, if you get tired of the beachy life and need some dynamic stuff going on, here are some suggestions to keep yourself busy.

Hit the streets of Chora

The main town of Koufonisia is a tiny fraction of what you can find in the neighbour islands. Don’t expect many clothing or souvenir shops. In fact don’t expect many shops at all, just the bare essentials.

That said, it’s a fine example of architecture in the Cyclades. Whitewashed houses with vibrant blue windows and doors, cobblestone streets, flowered courtyards and blue domes, it’s all there! It’s worth to walk around the streets of Chora, both during the day and the night when a charming island ambiance takes over.

🌐 Under the radar. 🇬🇷 GREECE 📸 iPhone 7 Plus ↘️ Koufonisia Chora (or Town) is a fishing village and the main port of the island. Symbols of a past where cereal production was a key part of the life in Koufonisia , there are 2 scenic windmills in the island. One is right next to the port (pro tip: go there for amazing sunset views!) and the other one is in Loutro , next to the shipyard area.

Outdoor Activities

Hop on a bike or hike until the other side for a full-rounded experience. Pori bay is a great spot for windsurfing.

When you’re at the beach, swim a bit farther away and explore the underwater world as well. Visibility for snorkeling is quite good next to rocky cliffs and pebbled coves.

Koufonisia Travel Guide Goat Keros

Daytrip to Kato Koufonissi

There’s always the option of escaping for a day to the island of Kato Koufonissi . Boats start departing early morning from Koufonisia ‘s main port until about 11pm every day in summer months.

Take advantage of the boat to leave you in the island’s main beach, Nero Beach , and/or explore the other beaches in the island: Detis and Laki . Before heading back, have lunch or dinner at the famous Venetsanos tavern, one of the best food experiences in the whole Cyclades.

Where to stay in Koufonisia

Accommodation options are scarce in Koufonisia . For one, this means you should expect overpriced rooms for the quality they offer. Basic demand-offer law, especially true during summer.

Secondly, if you’re coming during summer – late June to late August – is very important you book as much as in advance as possible. The possibility all hotels get sold out is real.

There are about 20 different options for accommodation in Koufonisia with free WiFi and 8+ rating on Booking . Out of these, only 2 of them are outside Chora (main town).

Without any 4 or 5-star accommodation in Koufonisia , I can highly recommend the place I stayed (below).

Myrto Hotel   In the heart of Chora and super close to the port, this family-owned hotel boasts spacious rooms and patios with great views. Good breakfast. The staff is friendly and informative, they even got an app for your phone! Book now >>

Where to eat in Koufonisia

There are only about 20-30 restaurants in Koufonisia . Not much, but the good news is they are almost all good quality restaurants, Greek-taverna style. More than 30 fishing boats go out daily from the island so it’s relatively easy to find a place to taste the catch of the day.

Here are my top restaurants on the island.

Karnagio 🐟

My favorite eating spot in Koufonisia . Small restaurant with a line of small tables along a small paved path right next to the sea. By night you can have a romantic meal by the stars with the sea literally at your feet.

There are cheaper places to eat in the island, but this magical setting makes it worth the extra.

Mixalios Grill House 🥩

Off the beaten path restaurant in an off the beaten path island. Located in sort of a farm, this restaurant serves locally grown food.

Come here for the excellent meat, especially lamb and goat (from Keros ), and the cheese specialties from Amargos . Reasonable prices and big portions.

Pro tip: sit outside for the full experience!

Souvlaki Sti Strofi 🥙

Do you enjoy hole-in-the-wall places when you travel? Well this is exactly that: a hole. In a wall. And it happens to serve the best souvlaki of the island.

Order your pitas with gyros or souvlaki from the little window and sit in one of the small tables right there, on the street. All for less than 4 euros. Hard to get more local than this.

There are more good restaurants such as Capetan Nikolas (great seafood), Kalofeggo (scenically located on Pori Beach ) and Fanos Beach Bar (decent lunch menus and for me, the best frappé in the island).

These are all highlighted on my Koufonisia island map .

What to eat and drink 🐟🍗🍹

Food in Koufonisia is very much based in local products which makes it delicious . Seriously.

Apart from the fresh seafood options, there’s the typically Greek souvlaki and tzatziki and other local meat-based specialties are available. The wild goat from Keros island is particularly appreciated here, as well as xerotigana (pork on the spit) and pasteli (a pastry made of sesame and honey).

Regarding drinks, try the traditional rakomelo : a super sweet alcoholic drink made with cinnamon, honey and raki (Greek white spirit, similar to vodka).

And hey, you’re in Greece , so an iced frappé always goes well with the relaxed mood of the island.

Cost of things in Koufonisia

Due to its remoteness, I was expecting Koufonisia to be a much more expensive place than it actually was. The only exception was the accommodation which felt a bit overpriced compared to other places in Greece .

To give you a good idea of the budget you can expect, I’ll give you some examples of cost of things. The prices are up-to-date at the date of writing of this article.

Koufonisia budget and daily costs 💸

  • Transportation : The total cost for the ferries (Santorini-Koufonisia and Koufonisia-Naxos-Mykonos) was about 70 EUR/person.
  • Vehicle rentals : motorbikes can be rented from 20-25 euros per day. Bikes from 4-5 euros.
  • Food : Local restaurants serve lunches starting at 8 euros. On average a lunch costs around 10-12 euros. Dinner was generally a bit more expensive, from 12-16 euros, but just because we wanted to visit the best restaurants in the island! The best frappés I had in my life were in Koufonisia and I never paid more than 3 euros for one.
  • Water : don’t forget to hydrate! A big water bottle (1,5L) is around 0,60 euros.
  • Accommodation : this one is hard because we were 4, which always tends to lower the total cost per person. I’d say you can expect to pay somewhere between 45 and 60 euros per day for an average double room in most places in Koufonisia . There isn’t many accommodation available, so I imagine prices go up a lot in summer months.

If you’re traveling with more people, you can get around with less than 50-60 euros per day in Koufonisia . If you’re traveling alone, raise that budget to about 70-80 euros/day. These are average prices: not a backpacker budget, but not luxury either.

Koufonisia Travel Tips

  • Book your stay ASAP. Seriously, the island is so tiny the hotels fill up quickly. If you come without a hotel booked during the warm months, you risk to pay an absurd amount of money. Start here .
  • Don’t play games with the sun. Temperatures are high in Koufonisia and there is hardly any shade. The hot sun takes it toll during summer. Hydrate yourself regularly and bring plenty of sunscreen.
  • Beware of the boats. Boats connecting the main port and Pori Beach passes very close to the coast, so be careful when swimming away from the beach. Also on Ammos Beach , next to the main port, don’t put your stuff too close to the sea. There are considerable-sized boats coming and going which creates mini-tsunamis on the nearby shore.
  • If possible, come at the right time of the year. The Festival of the Fishermen takes place on the last weekend of June. Includes fish mezzes, free wine and local shows and parties. Locals say it’s the best time to come!

Koufonisia Review

I can safely say Koufonisia was my favorite Greek island. It’s not pretentious as Mykonos or busy as Santorini and it’s even nowhere near the level of infrastructure of Naxos or Paros . After visiting all of those, it felt like going back to the basics. Somehow, a detox.

Koufonisia looks and feels completely different from the standard idea of a trip to Greek islands. I realized people going there seek three things the island excels at: sun, remoteness and sea. It reminded me of some places in Brac, Croatia and in many ways, I see it as the Koh Lipe of Europe .

So if you are looking for a beach getaway destination to forget all your problems, this is it.

This tiny little island might lack in sights and attractions, but it has a much more valuable feature, very rare to find these days: authenticity. I love how it stays true to its essence of a serene place and doesn’t try to be any more than that. It truly nurtures your body and soul. Fingers crossed it stays like this for years to come. ❤️

Koufonisia in Greece – A complete travel guide

The Koufonisia islands, located in the Cyclades archipelago of Greece, are known for their fantastic beaches and natural beauty.

What to do in Koufonisia

Koufonisia in Greece is a perfect destination for anyone that loves serene beaches, crystal clear waters, and low-key tourist development. The words “hidden gem” can be overused in some cases, but they perfectly describe Koufonisia!

This is not to say that tourism is unknown here – of course it is – but there's no high rise monstrosities or luxury resorts. Visiting Koufonisia after spending time on any of the big name islands in the Cyclades such as Santorini, Mykonos or Paros will feel like you are in a different world!

This guide includes the best things to do in Koufonisia, as well as travel tips for planning your trip there.

What is Koufonisia famous for?

Koufonisia is famous for the fantastic sandy beaches with crystal clear sea, the beautiful island scenery and laid-back pace of life.

It's the perfect destination to relax and unwind, without having to think about what to do next. And perhaps you can read that book that you've been postponing for months.

At the same time, there's enough activities and things to do that will excite anyone.

Visiting the beaches in Koufonisia in Greece

If you want some adventure and outdoor activities, head out and explore. You can go on boat tours, snorkeling trips, try some water sports or just hike around this paradise on earth.

No matter what your interests are, there is something here for you. But before we dive in, let's clear up what can be slightly confusing for some people…

Koufonisia or Koufonisi – And how many islands is it?

Koufonisia actually consists of three tiny islands in the Cyclades archipelago in Greece – Ano Koufonisi, Kato Koufonisi, and Keros.

Of these, Keros can not be visited, which leaves us two islands – Ano Koufonisi and Kato Koufonisi.

View of Keros island

All the official accommodation is on Ano Koufonisi.

Kato Koufonisi does not have official accommodation, but free camping has been happening for years here. It's also a popular day trip to take from the main island.

So, when people say they are staying in Koufonisia, they typically mean Ano Koufonisi. When people say they have visited Koufonisia, they might mean both Ano and Kato Koufonisi.

I hope that clears it up – Maybe read it twice to make sense!

For the rest of this travel guide, I'll refer to the destination as Koufonisia in the singular. Phew!

Where is Koufonisia in Greece?

Koufonisia is located in the Small Cyclades subgroup, (which also includes Schinoussa , Iraklia and Donoussa ), close by to the much bigger island of Naxos .

How to get to Koufonisia

You can get to the Koufonisia islands by ferry from Piraeus and Rafina ports in Athens.

The famous Blue Star ferries take just under 8 hours from Piraeus, while one of the faster SeaJet ferries covers the route in 4.5 hours.

Blue Star ferry to Koufonisia

In addition, there are several direct ferry connections with other islands in the Cyclades, like Naxos, Mykonos or Santorini.

If you are coming from a European destination, it may be quicker to fly into Mykonos international airport, and then take a 1.5 hour ferry trip to the Greek island of koufonisia.

These guides on how to get to Koufonisia explain all your options in detail.

  • Athens to Koufonisia
  • Santorini to Koufonisia ferry
  • Mykonos to Koufonisia
  • Naxos to Koufonisia

Ferries to Koufonisia arrive at the main port on Ano Koufonisi. I recommend Ferryhopper for looking at schedules and booking Greek ferry tickets online.

Where to stay in Koufonisia

Most of the accommodation in Ano Koufonissi is located in or around Chora, the main village. If you've already pre-booked somewhere to stay, your host will probably meet you at the port.

Rooms to let in Koufonisia

When choosing a Koufonisia hotel, you will find dozens of different options, ranging from budget self-catering rooms to villas and deluxe suites.

We stayed in Archipelagos hotel , a few minutes walk from the village. They offer spacious rooms with a kitchenette. The owner and her sister were very helpful with suggestions about the island.

Higher end options include Aeris , right in the centre of the village, and Pyrthea , if you are looking for more privacy and sunset views.

You can find a wide range of Koufonisia hotel choices on Booking .

Koufonisia things to do

And now we've got some of the logistics out of the way, let's check the things to do in Koufonisia!

Amazing beaches in Koufonisia

Swimming in Koufonisia

Swimming is the number one thing to do in Koufonisia. Both islands have beautiful, pristine sandy beaches where you can spend a few hours, or several days.

The water is some of the clearest around the Cyclades. The sea is shallow, making the Koufonisia beaches ideal for families.

Many of the beaches in Koufonisia are facing south, which makes them ideal when the meltemi winds blow from the north.

View of Koufonissi

Beaches in Koufonisia

One thing you should know is that none of the beaches here are fully organized. You will find bars near some of them, but there are no facilities like umbrellas and sun loungers right on the sand.

Unless your hotel provides umbrellas for guests, my suggestion is to buy an umbrella from one of the local minimarkets. You can then leave it behind for the next visitors.

Cycling around Ano Koufonisi

Walking and cycling are the only way to reach the beaches in Ano Koufonisi by land. There is a lovely, scenic coastal path which most people will be able to follow. There is also an inland road, ending in Pori beach.

The coastal path

Alternatively, you can take the small boat that does Koufonissi tours on a daily basis.

Here are the beaches in Ano Koufonisi, one by one, starting from the main village.

Ammos beach

Ammos, meaning “sand”, is a beautiful stretch of soft sand with turquoise waters. It is located right in the main village in Ano Koufonisi.

Ammos port beach Koufonisi

It is the easiest option for a quick swim. If you are lucky you can get a space in the shade and spend all day. You will find all amenities like restaurants and cafes nearby.

The fishing boats in the bay just add to the ambiance. This is one of the best port beaches in the Cyclades.

Chondros Kavos Beach

This sheltered, pebbly cove is the first beach to the east of the village, after roughly a ten minute walk. The waters are crystal clear, ideal for snorkeling.

Chondros Kavos beach Koufonisia

You can have a meal at the nearby taverna with the same name.

Finikas Beach (Charokopou)

This is a popular beach in Ano Koufonisi, about a 15-minute walk from the village. Its original name is Charokopou, just like the wider area.

Finikas beach bar

However, most people know it as Finikas. This is the name of the friendly beach cafe-restaurant, where you can stop for a drink or a meal.

Finikas is sandy, with shallow aqua-jade waters. You can snorkel around the nearby rocks and caves.

Fanos Beach

Fanos is one of the most visited beaches in Ano Koufonisi. The sea is very similar to Finikas, with several coves and bays to explore.

Fanos beach

There is a comfortable, rather posh-looking bar-restaurant where you can spend a few hours. The bar is equipped with umbrellas and sunbeds.

Fanos is a five minute walk from Finikas, following the coastal road.

Platia Pounda / Italida Beach

Platia Pounta is a wide sandy beach, with crystal clear waters and fine sand. It's a popular stop in Koufonisi, and is naturist-friendly.

Italida beach

Platia Pounta is about 30 minutes walk from the village. There are no facilities or cafe / bar here, so make sure you have all you need with you.

The closest place where you can get some water or snacks is Fanos.

This beach is best known as “Italida”, literally meaning “Italian lady”. Apparently, an Italian lady owned part of the area just above the beach, hence the name.

Many people consider Pori to be the island's best beach. It's a long sandy crescent, open to the northeast. There is soft, golden sand and crystal clear waters. On calm days, it looks like a natural pool.

Pori beach

It can be reached on foot, but it's best to avoid the hottest time of the day, as it takes 40-50 minutes from the village. On some years, there is a bus taking visitors to Pori on an inland road.

The bay itself is quite popular with yachts. There are also two restaurants, serving coffees, drinks and food.

On days with strong northern winds, Pori won't be very sheltered. On these days, it's best to go to one of the numerous south-facing beaches.

Gala is a pebbly beach adjacent to a cave, a short walking distance from Pori.

The name of the small cove means “milk” in Greek. The name derives from the white foam created by the waves when it's windy.

Gala beach is best avoided with north winds, as swimming will not be easy.

Loutro and Spilia beach

West of the main and only village in Koufonissi, you will find two small coves, mostly frequented by locals, Loutro and Spilia.

Spilia beach Koufonisi

These two beaches aren't as impressive as Finikas, Italida or Pori, but they are a great alternative if you want more privacy.

Rock formations in Koufonisi – Devil's Eye, Piscina, Xilompatis

Apart from the beautiful sandy beaches, Ano Koufonisi is full of interesting rock formations, all around the coastline.

Close to Platia Pounta, you will find a small natural pool, known as Piscina . You will likely see local children and foreign visitors diving in.

Piscina beach

Devil's Eye is another one of the Koufonissi sights you can't miss. It's an iconic cave, located between Platia Pounta and Pori.

If you get to Pori, you should also walk along the rocky cliffs, and observe the impressive caves of Xilompatis from above.

Visit Kato Koufonissi

Once you've explored Ano Koufonisi, it's time to visit its sister island, Kato Koufonisi!

You can visit the deserted island on Koufonissi boat tours, which depart from the main port, depending on weather. Departure times vary by season, so ask around.

Boat tours around Koufonissia

Kato Koufonisi is famous for its free camping. In terms of tourist facilities, there is only a taverna. Make sure you bring everything you need for the day, including water, sunscreen and maybe a few snacks.

What to do in Kato Koufonissi

There are several virgin beaches on the wild island. The boat will first stop on Panagia, and then continue to Nero beach which is further south.

Sign at Kato Koufonisi

My suggestion is to get off at Nero, where you can spend a few hours, and then walk backwards to Panagia beach.

On the way, you will see a few other beaches, Alonistria, Detis and Laki. You will love the unspoiled, natural beauty and rugged landscape!

Eventually, you will reach the deserted village of Panagia. You can explore the path towards the old chapel, and eventually get to the famous Venetsanos taverna, where you can have some tasty local food.

And if you miss the last boat back to Ano Koufonisi, don't worry, you won't be the only one!

As mentioned already, there are two types of Koufonissi tours.

Boat tours in Koufonisi

If you want to take it easy, you can reach most beaches on Ano Koufonisi on a boat trip around the island. Note that, in case of strong winds, the boat might not be able to approach all of the bays.

In addition, a boat trip is the only way to get to Kato Koufonisi, and discover the uninhabited paradise.

Explore the main village, Chora

Like every Cycladic island, Koufonissi has a small main town, Chora. Walk around the narrow alleyways, and discover the traditional architecture and unique island charm.

Church in Koufonisia

Don't miss the old windmill, which has been transformed into tourist accommodation. You will find it on the west coast, right above the old shipping yard.

There are plenty of cafes, tavernas and bars in Chora where you can stop and enjoy some delicious food or a drink.

Anyone interested in Koufonissi shopping will discover a few stores with unique handmade jewelry and original clothing items.

As you are walking around the village, you will come across a small Ethnographic museum, containing old objects and curiosities. These were donated by locals, in an attempt to keep the culture alive.

Where to eat in Koufonissi

For such a small island, Ano Koufonissi offers a lot of choice when it comes to tavernas and restaurants. Local meat, especially lamb, and fresh fish feature in most restaurant menus.

Greek food in Koufonisia

Capetan Nicolas and Captain Dimitri are considered among the best restaurants in Koufonisia for fish and seafood. Capetan Nicolas has a lovely terrace facing the sunset.

We enjoyed Rouchounas , a restaurant serving dishes made with excellent local products, including their famous meats.

For an authentic local experience, check out Karnagio , a small restaurant towards the edge of the village. They have a large selection of dishes and mezes, at very sensible prices. The setting is great too.

Koufonissi Nightlife

Koufonissi nightlife isn't exactly the main reason you'd visit Koufonisia. However, there are a few low-key options for a relaxed drink.

Between Mylos , Scholio , Astrolouloudo , Horaki and To Kyma , you will definitely find a bar to have a late-night drink, or three.

Why you can't hire a vehicle on the island

Koufonisi is one of the few Greek islands where you can't hire a car or quad.

Although there is plenty of tourist infrastructure on the island, the locals are keen on preserving the beautiful Koufonissi nature.

As a result, the only vehicle you can hire is a bicycle. Strictly speaking though, you won't really need it, as it's possible to walk everywhere.

Why are there so many different spellings?

This question puzzles many visitors! Is it Koufonisia, or Koufonisi? And, how many “s” does the word have? Here is an explanation.

Koufonisia are two small islands. The main island, which is round-shaped, is called Ano Koufonisi (“Ano” means “Upper”). It has about 400 residents, and this is where you will find all accommodation and facilities.

There is also an long-shaped, uninhabited island, called Kato Koufonisi (“Kato” means “Lower”). The only thing you can visit here apart from the beaches is a famous taverna.

In Greek, Koufonisia is the plural form of the word Koufonisi. So, technically speaking, Koufonisia refers to both islands. When people talk about Koufonisi they normally mean Ano Koufonisi.

You will often find their names written as Koufonissia, or Koufonissi. This is a matter of pronounciation – the word is pronounced Koufonissi rather than Koufonisi. In Greek, you only need one “s”, and the name is Κουφονήσι.

Frequently asked questions about Koufonisia Greece

People visiting Koufonisia often ask questions like these:

How many days do you need in Koufonisia?

You can spend as long as you want in Koufonisia. Some people visit for a day trip, while others stay a whole week! I would recommend at least two days in Koufonisia, or three if you want to visit the uninhabited Kato Koufonissi as well.

Do I need a car in Koufonisia?

A car is not necessary in Koufonisia, and there are no car rental options. The island is small and flat, and you can easily reach the beautiful beaches on foot.

How do you get around Koufonisia?

It is easy to get around Ano Koufonisi on foot. The furthest beach, Pori, is only 40-50 minutes away from the main village. You can also hire a bike, though you will inevitably have to push it on the island's long stretches of sand. Other options include taking the local boat or hopping on the bus to Pori.

Can you fly to Koufonisia?

There is no airport in Koufonissia. The closest islands with international airports are Mykonos and Santorini. You can also fly to Naxos, which has a domestic airport, and take a quick ferry ride.

Hi Dave, Thank you so much for your information on Greece and the Cyclades. I live in Maryland and am going to Greece for the first time in October. You have been a great help to me in booking ferry tickets, hotel, tours and so much more. I planned a horse ride on the beach, scuba dive (first time), catamaran tour, and fishing trip. I am so excited to stay in Mykonos and Santorini and followed many of your suggestions. I envy you being able to visit so many islands in Greece. That would be a dream for me. God has been good and I feel blessed to be able to take this vacation and I appreciate your blog to help me along the way. God bless you and keep you safe.

Why You Should Visit Koufonisia, Greece, the Mediterranean Montauk

By Mark Ellwood

This image may contain Sea Outdoors Nature Ocean Water Land Shoreline Human Person Coast Lagoon Lake and Beach

The Cyclades island cluster is Greece’s answer to the Hamptons. These small communities, once rustic hideaways, have morphed into scene-y summer staples, luring visitors via superb weather, a chic setting, and delicious local produce. Think of Naxos, Santorini , or Mykonos as a sun-baked island answer to East Hampton but, of the more than 200 islands that make up this cluster, the closest thing to a Mediterranean Montauk is Koufonisia.

Much like Montauk , which is the the last stop on the Long Island Rail Road, Koufonisia was overlooked in part because of its location, far from Athens. It’s not a viable destination for day trippers; until three summers ago, there wasn’t even a direct ferry from Athens's Piraeus port. Now, there’s a daily sailing (from $25 each way) from the capital, but it still takes four hours. Like Montauk, Koufonisia’s infrastructure was long bare bones—electricity only arrived in 1980, internet access remains hiccupy and Koufonisia still only has one ATM. Translation: bring plenty of Euros, in small bills, as few businesses here accept credit cards.

Even today, Koufonisia still has no big name or boutique hotelier operating. The best option on the island is Hotel Aeolos run by a Greek expat and his wife who spend off-seasons in Pennsylvania, and which offers bright, clean doubles ranged on a hilltop garden with a swimming pool from $124 per night. That’s probably a good thing, given how longtimers still grumble about the arrival of tony hideouts in Montauk. Fashion folk have started flocking here, too: the Missonis are regular visitors, and Robert Cavalli reportedly hosted a family wedding here on his yacht (by some estimates, around three quarters of the tourists most summers are from Italy). There are even parallels between their economies: both long relied on fishermen to keep them afloat, though the much-repeated maxim on Koufonisia that there might be more fishing boats than the 400 or so residents is probably fanciful.

Standing on the port in the chora or Old Town, it’s easy to understand the appeal of this Med-Montauk. It evokes the untouched, otherworldly island life that Jackie Onassis encountered as she yachted from island to island four decades ago. Strolling around its steep, cobbled alleyways—the main street is barely wide enough for a hand-held cart—it feels like a throwback to Greece’s glory days.

What’s known as Koufonisia (in English or Italian) is technically a trio of islands. The first, Keros, is off-limits to visitors as a site of archeological significance, while Kato (Lower) Koufonisi is windswept and somewhat unkempt. Its settlers largely confined to a few hardy locals and Athenian hippies who enjoy camping—and frolicking au naturel —on its beaches. The main settlement, and the best one to explore, is Pano (Upper) Koufonisi. It’s here you’ll find the island’s string of astonishing, and often half-empty, beaches.

Barely two square miles in size, there are few real roads or traffic outside that settlement around the harbor. The best way to reach those spits of sand is either on foot—bring a hat, as there’s little natural shade—or via one of the brightly painted wooden launches which leave regularly from a small hut at the main port ($6 per person each way) Like seafaring buses, they pitstop at the chain of beaches etched into the rocky edges of the island’s southern coast; the best approach is to take the boat to its terminus, Pori Beach, where there’s a chic, Italian Riviera-like beach bar there that’s ideal for lunch, Kalofego . Spend the rest of the day lazily strolling stroll back to the main town by sunset: there are ample private inlets where you can sunbathe shielded by the cliffs in total privacy or join the scene at the island’s buzziest beach, Fanos, which is rimmed with beach clubs. If you’re a strong swimmer, brave the natural swimming hole carved out of the rock by the crashing waters of the ocean – but be aware you’ll need to jump in, but the way out is via an underwater passage into the open ocean. Come sundown, the most romantic restaurant in town is Nikitouri , where the terrace patio overlooks the harbor; order one of the citrus and beet salads, then follow up with fresh-caught local fish.

There are signs, though, that Koufonisia is beginning to undergo the same trendy transformation that Montauk enjoyed, and endured, over the last decade. Two summers ago, the first chic restaurant opened on the main cobbled street, Gastronautis . It’s easy to imagine it as the in-house restaurant in a modish rehabbed motel out East – all whitewashed furniture and snake-hipped diners. Still, the menu is distinctively Greek: it’s the best place to try Koufonisia’s signature cheese, the tangy mithizra . Like the love child of feta and ricotta, it’s slathered on everything from crusty bread to salad bowls full of ripe, rough-cut tomatoes grown nearby.

Where is Koufonisia Greece?

View from Chora towards the port and beach, Koufonisia islands, Cyclades Greece

Koufonisia in Greece is a small cluster of islands consisting of two main islands, Kato (Lower) and Pano (Upper) Koufonisi and some smaller islets. Together with nearby Keros, they all belong to the complex of “Small East Cyclades”. They sit in the heart of the Aegean Sea, between Naxos and Amorgos. Geographically, you will find them on the southeast side of Naxos, west of Amorgos. They are also quite different from each other. While Pano Koufonissi is where the center of the islands’ activity is, meaning Koufonisia hotels, restaurants, bars and sights, Kato Koufonisi is uninhabited and can only be reached by boat from Pano Koufonissi. Keros too, is uninhabited and protected as an archaeological site from which many ancient Cycladic art pieces have been excavated, among which are the figure of Big Mother (1.40 m. tall), and the famous statuettes “the Piper” and “the Harpist”, now exhibited at the National Archaeological Museum of Athens.

A hideout for pirates

Their name ‘ Koufonisia ‘ comes from the many caves the waves have shaped along the coastlines, which, when seen by pirates, gave them the impression that the islands (in Greek “nissia”) were hollow (in Greek “koufio”) – therefore Koufionisia and later Koufonisia.

Pano Koufonisi is the smallest and most densely populated island belonging to the Cyclades islands. It has an extent of 3,5 km² and a population of 366. The main occupation of the locals is fishing, so Koufonisi is a true fishing village where the visitors can enjoy fresh fish and seafood.

Natural beauty and traditions

The white windmill on the east side of the port welcomes the visitors when they arrive at the island. Chora is built on the southwest coast of Koufonisi and is a characteristic example of Cycladic architecture. The amazing beaches – of which the majority are sandy – are part of the magic picture of the island. Tourism has developed in Koufonisi the last ten years, so the natural beauty and the traditional color of the islands have remained untouched. During your stay on Koufonisia there are several places of interest that you should visit, such as the central and the back port, the piscatorial shelter, the carnagio, the windmills and the churches of Agios Georgios, Agios Nikolaos and Profitis Ilias. The fishermen in their small boats (kayakes) is a characteristic picture of the island. The church of Virgin Mary is one of the most important sights on Koufonisi, whereas in Keros apart from the archaeological findings, one can enjoy the magic sunrise.

Koufonisia – What to see?

Paradise beach with emerald waters on the Island of Kato Koufonisi, Smaller Cyclades, Greece

Koufonisia island is a perfect combination of amazing beaches, gorgeous cliffs and cave, and a cozy village. There isn’t much to see in the sense of sightseeing. There is though a few tiny islands nearby, great for a day trip.

Detis - where you get off the boat at Kato Koufonisi, the only settlement on the island

  • Kato Koufonisi – is a tiny paradise, uninhabited and unspoiled. It is located just a few miles from Pano Koufonisi, and you can go on a boat trip for the day, enjoying its amazing beaches.
  • Ancient Site – this small archaeological site was found in Kato Koufonisi. On top of it a small church, dedicated to Virgin Mary, has been built.
  • Keros Island – is in a short distance to Koufonisia. It is a small uninhabited island where important excavations have been made. Access prohibited.
  • Glaronissi Islet – is uninhabited with a lot of beautiful caves and crystal-clear turquoise water. You can go there by boat from Pano Koufonisi.

Other smaller islets of the Smal East Cyclades complex is Avelonisia, Agios Andreas, Agrilia, Aspronisi (or Ligari), Venetiko, Bulgari, Glaronisi, Klidoura, Lazarus, the Makares islets, the Melantia islets, Moschonas, Ofidoussa, the Plakes islets, Plaki, Prasoura, Scandia, Skylonisi and Tsouloufi. All of these islets are uninhabited.

Koufonisia – What to do?

Along the coast of Koufonisia, from Pariano to Pori, there are small, magic bays with sandy beaches which alternate with caves in the rocky shore created by the sea and time. Generally, the beaches on the east side of the island are better and the vegetation there is denser. A path can lead you to the most beautiful beaches such as Harokopou (Phoinikas), Platia Pounda, which is the most popular, Phanos and Pori, both less crowded but beautiful. Pori, which is told to be the best beach of all, is 4 km from Chora. The beachside road may seem a long walk in the summer heat, and in any case the second path, crossing the interior of the island, is very beautiful. On the footpath you will see white lilies, a rare species that is met only in Cyclades.

Fishing boat, Koufonisia, Cyclades, Greece

Each year on the last Saturday in June locals and visitors get together in the habor of Pano Koufonisi in order to celebrate the ‘feast of the fisherman’ with fresh, delicious seafood and wine offered to everyone present. At this beautiful festival the local musicians build an exciting atmosphere combined with the sublime spectacle of dancing groups both from Koufonisia but also from other islands participating. Finally, through common effort they stir up people and involve everyone in dancing and celebrating. The “Fisherman’s Feast” at Koufonisia started many years ago as a result of the abundance of fish in the area and the enthusiasm of the locals with the coming of spring and the first visitors. So “…dance, dance, do not grieve the shoes, they will rest the hours you sleep…” like the old island song so nicely encourages us. Don’t miss it!

The old house was built in 1852. From 1890 to 1930 it functioned as a primary school. In 1996 it became one of the most popular café-bars in Koufonisia. In an ambient environment with rock music you can enjoy delicious crepes, and cocktails while playing board games or chatting with the friendly owners. You’ll find it on the cobbled main street of Chora. It has wireless internet. Each year from May until late September it is hosting a photo exhibition. Open 18:00 to 3:30 all year round

Beaches in Pano Koufonisi

With their amazing turquoise waters , golden sand and stunning landscape, beaches in Koufonisia are amongst the most beautiful in Greece . Most of them do not have any amenities or natural shade, so we recommend bringing what you need with you. To get to the beaches in Pano Koufonisi you can either walk or take the local boat . The service runs daily during the summer.

The 7 best beaches in Pano Koufonisi are:

  • Ammos: this beach is right next to the port, but it’s still gorgeous. It has crystal blue waters and is sheltered from the north wind.
  • Foinikas or Charokopou beach: this is a fantastic beach with turquoise waters and golden sand. It has been named after the taverna Foinikas, which is right next to it. After your swim, head there to enjoy good local food.
  • Fanos: this is a beautiful sandy beach with crystal-clear waters and a charming café-restaurant.
  • Italida: this nude-friendly beach has glassy turquoise waters and golden sand that will make you think that you are on a tropical island.
  • Pisina (“swimming pool”): this is not exactly a beach, but an amazing natural swimming pool with turquoise waters that has been carved into the rocks by the sea!
  • Pori: this is probably the best beach in Pano Koufonisi. It has golden sand and fantastic blue waters. There, you will find the popular bar-restaurant Kalofego.
  • Gala (“milk”): an opening in the rocks allows seawater to pass through, forming this tiny pebbly beach that is truly a wonder of nature. Its unusual name comes from the milky color of its waters.

Tip: as you walk along the coast from Foinikas to Gala, you will find several natural pools and caves where you can swim. We also recommend visiting Ksilobatis caves in the northeast of the island to marvel at the breathtaking landscape.

Beaches in Kato Koufonisi

Jump on the little boat that departs daily from the port of Pano Koufonisi to discover the gorgeous secluded beaches of Kato Koufonisi. The ride takes about 10 minutes.

Most of the island’s beaches can only be reached on foot, as there are no roads. The hiking trails are not very difficult and the breathtaking views of the Aegean will reward you for your efforts! Bear in mind that apart from the little restaurant in Panagia, Venetsanos, the island has no other amenities or accommodation facilities. But you can always sleep on the beach!

Ferryhopper’s 4 favorite beaches in Kato Koufonisi are:

  • Nero: this is an amazing beach with turquoise waters and a big tamarisk that offers its shade to visitors. Nero is a favourite camping spot and the beach is nude-friendly.
  • Detis: this is a small sandy beach with turquoise waters.
  • Lakki: this pebbly beach is popular with campers, as it is close to the island’s only restaurant. It has crystal blue waters and is sheltered from the wind.
  • Pezoulia: this is a beautiful beach with small pebbles and crystal-clear waters.

Nightlife in Koufonisia

Nightlife in Koufonisia is more low-key compared to other Greek islands but still exciting. Chora , the only village in Koufonisia, has several bars to suit all tastes. We recommend going to the legendary café-bar Sorokos to enjoy your drink next to the sea.

For seafood, head to Aneplora and Kapetan-Nikolas, and for traditional Greek cuisine, go to Foinikas. Don’t miss the souvlaki at Strofi, the cheese pie at the bakery of Giorgoula, and the ice-cream at Fistiki. For coffee, breakfast and mouth-watering desserts, try Kalamia or Chelona (“turtle”). In Kato Koufonisi, Venetsanos is well-known for its tasty dishes and impromptu parties with traditional Greek music.

During your vacation in Koufonisia, you should definitely try:

  • seafood pasta
  • wild goat from Keros (usually cooked in the oven)

  • xerotigana (fried dough dessert with syrup)

Day trips from Koufonisia

If you feel that you need a break from all the sunbathing and swimming in Koufonisia, you can go for a day trip to the beautiful neighbouring islands . Boats departs from the port of Pano Koufonisi.

We definitely recommend visiting the uninhabited island of Keros , a place of great archaeological significance that was probably a major sanctuary during the Early Cycladic period (3200-2000 BCE). While there are no beaches in Keros, you can dive in the amazing crystal waters of the Aegean Sea!

Milo the dog found three weeks after escaping just before his flight from Melbourne to the UK

Milo laying on the floor of the vet.

A dog that escaped just hours before he was due to board a flight from Melbourne to Wales, in the United Kingdom, has been found after almost three weeks on the run.

Milo, the Jack Russell Cross, was due to fly to his new home where his owners had relocated but escaped from a handler and took off into the Tullamarine Industrial Estate.

His owner Jason Whatnall took to social media appealing to the community for help locating his four legged friend.

Milo being held by his owners Jason and Nick.

That's when local animal rescuer Nigel Williamson stepped in.

"He [Mr Whatnall] was notified half an hour after he dropped Milo off that Milo had escaped and he returned straight back to search for him," Mr Williamson said.

"But of course he had a flight to catch himself.

"He was very very distraught and didn't know what he was going to do."

Mr Williamson drove around the area, playing a recording of Mr Whatnall's voice through a speaker on his car, hoping it would draw Milo out of hiding.

Several days passed without a single sighting of Milo.

"[But then], three days ago, day 15 into Milo's disappearance, we received a report of a confirmed sighting," Mr Williamson said.

"We immediately headed to that area and we got to see Milo for ourselves."

A happy ending for Milo

It wasn't easy to catch Milo who kept running away from anyone who tried to get close.

After observing him some more from a distance, Milo's rescuers discovered he had been sleeping underneath a shipping container and visiting a particular area for food scraps.

"We set a specialised trap up for him but he did not turn up that night," Mr Williamson said.

Milo the dog in a vet cage.

He said the following morning Milo came within 15 metres of the trap but got spooked by someone nearby.

A second trap was set up while another rescuer, who works for Mr Williamson, embarked on a 39-hour stake out, sitting in his car, watching and waiting for Milo.

Just after 9pm on Thursday, the news they had all been waiting for trickled through.

Milo had entered the trap and taken the bait, a dog treat.

Mr Williamson said he was "elated".

"We both got very very excited," he said.

"[It's] a very happy ending."

He video called Mr Whatnall to share the news who was also over the moon.

Milo is doing well all things considering.

Mr Williamson said he lost a fair bit of weight during the ordeal and will be staying in Melbourne for the next week so he can recover.

He will then board a first class flight to be reunited with his family so they can embark on their next big adventure together.

Mr Williamson said Milo's story is quite common.

He encouraged travelling pet owners to put an airtag on their pets so that they can be easily located if disaster strikes.

Relax in the courtyard.

Nestled in Dubai ’s almost 100-acre Madinat Jumeirah, an area reminiscent of a small Arabian village, Jumeirah Dar Al Masyaf offers a serene haven amid its more imposing sister resorts, including Jumeirah Mina A’Salam , Jumeirah Al Naseem and Jumeirah Al Qasr .

As it marks its 20th anniversary, Jumeirah Dar Al Masyaf stands out for its intimate setting, which includes recently renovated summerhouses and villas. In each summerhouse — aptly named Dar Al Masyaf means “summer house” and was inspired by the traditional Arabian structures — eight to 10 guest rooms and a one-bedroom suite encircle a spacious, tranquil central courtyard. This vibrant Moroccan-style space captivates with colorful tiles, vivid bursts of terra cotta, the trickling sounds of a water feature and pops of greenery. The inviting, secluded courtyard coaxes you to unwind with sofas, daybeds and chairs.

Enjoy drinks and conversation in the majlis.

The 29 two-story summerhouses all have a majlis , or sitting room, on their ground floor. In the United Arab Emirates and elsewhere in the Middle East, a majlis is a cultural cornerstone where community and conversation take center stage. Here, the guests of each summerhouse can gather at the nightly sunset happy hour to chat over complimentary wine, cocktails or soft drinks and snacks (bowls of potato chips and mixed nuts were on offer during our visit). Sit in the U-shaped banquettes lining the airy room or retreat to the expansive courtyard just outside.

The accommodations have been refreshed with a timeless palette of white and cream and touches of powder blue and navy while preserving distinctive architectural elements that evoke a sense of place: scalloped doorways, arabesque patterns and stately wood doors. Make time for a soak in the bathrooms’ enticing freestanding tubs.

Sephora s spring sale starts today here s what our editors are buying, trump media stock (djt) needs to rise soon.

The guest rooms feel light and airy.

Though the summerhouses focus inward on the courtyard and majlis, Dubai’s longest private beach (it measures more than a mile) is mere steps away, and many rooms have balconies with views of the gulf, gardens or the navigable waterways that cut through the property.

The most exclusive accommodations at Jumeirah Dar Al Masyaf are the Malakiya Villas. After a year-long revitalization, the collection of seven villas is available for those who need a getaway with discretion and privacy (it’s a favorite among celebrities). After a chauffeur picks you up at the airport (villa guests receive this perk along with an airport drop-off) and brings you to the property, you will board an electric abra , a traditional Emirati wooden boat, for a quick but scenic ride to your villa for a private check-in.

Enjoy contemporary luxury.

Designed by Dubai-based Sahar Alyaseer of La Bottega, the contemporary-styled villas have a light and soothing ambiance with neutral tones and accents of subdued shades of sage and blue. The villas feel like luxurious homes, with two or three bedrooms, a private plunge pool, a sprawling terrace and a kitchen. You’ll also get thoughtful in-room comforts: At the end of the day, sip complimentary sundowners from the curved sofa in your villa.

Whether you stay in the villas or the summerhouses, you will receive stellar amenities. A butler is at the ready 24 hours a day via WhatsApp to help with everything from ensuring your Arabian coffee is fresh and to your liking to quickly booking your dining experiences at one of the more than 50 onsite restaurants or your spa appointment at the Forbes Travel Guide Four-Star Talise Spa Madinat Jumeirah . The attentive butler might add numerous surprise treats, which provide delightful touches to your stay.

Indulge in a bath.

In addition, you get complimentary access to Wild Wadi Waterpark (a hit with kids) and Madinat Jumeirah’s private pools, including the adults-only Celeste infinity pool, which sits on the sand with stunning ocean views.

Perched at the edge of the property, your stay at this hideaway boutique hotel provides a picturesque and tranquil contrast to the bustling energy of Dubai.
