Thanks for liking this song! We have added it to a personal playlist for you.

by Ayisha Jaffer

November 30, 2022

While on tour across the United States, U.K. band The Heavy Heavy were living a real-life version of their song “Miles and Miles,” which landed at No. 1 in The Current’s Chart Show the week the band visited the studio for a session hosted by Ayisha Jaffer. Life and Life Only , the debut EP from The Heavy Heavy, originally released in late 2020, but was re-released as an enhanced edition on June 1 of this year.

Blending elements of ‘60s folk, cosmic Americana and good-old rock and roll, The Heavy Heavy performed a lively set in the studio, after which The Heavy Heavy’s Georgie Fuller and Will Turner sat down for an equally lively conversation with Ayisha.

Watch and listen to the complete session above, and read a transcript below.

And just this week, the Heavy Heavy announced a U.S. tour for spring 2023, which includes a stop at the Fine Line in Minneapolis on Friday, April 7.

Interview Transcript

Edited for clarity.

Ayisha Jaffer: I'm Ayisha Jaffer; I'm the host of The Current Chart Show , which these guys have knocked Brandi Carlile out of the number one spot with "Miles and Miles." How does that feel?

Will Turner: Nuts!

Georgie Fuller: No words.

Ayisha Jaffer: Actually, well then, okay, so "Miles and Miles" is our listeners' favorite song, right? So that's proof. We have proof, knocking Brandi Carlile out. So can you give us any lowdowns about "Miles and Miles," the track, that you haven't shared so far?

Georgie Fuller: What, like, little ...

Ayisha Jaffer: Just, like, making of or like something we didn't hear in it, or inspiration of it that you may not have shared.

Georgie Fuller: I don't know if there's...

Will Turner: I mean, it's about driving across America.

Georgie Fuller: Yeah. Which is cool, because that's what we're doing now.

Will Turner: It's fairly obvious, really, isn't it? It's quite simple track. But it's, you know, it does... It does what it was meant to do.

Georgie Fuller: I went out — so Will and I created the Heavy Heavy in our London apartment: one bed; the kitchen was the living room was the office with, you know, everything. And I went out for an afternoon, and I came back and this song was written. It was complete. And I think that's quite cool, because Will was just dreaming. And, you know, his imagination went wild with not being trapped in this little flat in London, and road-tripping across America. And now it's happening, isn't it?

Will Turner: Yeah. Which is, again, quite weird.

Ayisha Jaffer: I was gonna say, before now, had you been to the States, period?

Georgie Fuller: Yeah, as a visitor. We came in July to do CBS Saturday Sessions . But that was very quick. You know, it was fly in, record in the studio, go. So it's really nice to be playing live and meeting people and yeah.

Ayisha Jaffer: Is there any like takeaways of touring the States so far that have surprised you?

Georgie Fuller: It's even bigger than I thought.

Will Turner: Yeah. Yes.

Georgie Fuller: I'm daily— I'm surprised on a daily basis at how far it is to drive from everywhere to everywhere else.

Will Turner: Yes, it's nuts, innit?

Georgie Fuller: But also, actually, the music lovers here are such music lovers. And the crowds are — I'm not throwing shade at the U.K., but we're quite a reserved people — and Americans are a lot more vocal, and that's awesome. You know, people shouting out during certain stuff. You're like, "Yeah!" It's like a conversation.

Ayisha Jaffer: Yeah. So you've been given permission, everyone, to shout out as much as you love the Heavy Heavy.

Georgie Fuller: Yeah, just heckle us!

Will Turner: Yeah, bring it on!

The Heavy Heavy perform in The Current studio

Ayisha Jaffer: So Life and Life Only , it's out. You've got six songs on that record. We love it. And to me, it feels like it's something like this is like, live in the present, like, do it in the present. But what is what is your hopeful takeaway for people for this record?

Georgie Fuller: I think kind of that, right?

Will Turner: Yeah, and dream big, you know? Like, let your imagination go. You know, it can be more than just what's in the room. It can be, you know, dream. It may be cliché but that's what it is. It's extra. Go the extra mile.

Ayisha Jaffer: Yeah. Is that the "heavy, heavy" part of it? Because to me, the music is so light and fun. I'm wondering why the Heavy Heavy?

Will Turner: Good question.

Georgie Fuller: Well, we were listening to an interview with [David] Bowie on the BBC, when he released Ziggy Stardust, and they asked, "Can you explain it to us?" And he went, "It's heavy, heavy, man." Well, that's cool.

Will Turner: Yeah, but it is quite a contrast to the music, and it's really quite cool, you know?

Ayisha Jaffer: But I like that. I love it. I feel like now you gotta take that answer for most future interviews. If you don't want to answer a question, just say that!

Will Turner: Yeah!

Ayisha Jaffer: So okay, so you made this, you self-produced this in London flat, but like, what led to creating the Heavy Heavy as you're new kids on the block here?

Will Turner: Yeah, so I was in a band doing similar music for quite a while back home, and then all of a sudden, putting George's voice into that world was like, you know, euphoria. You know, epiphany. It was like, "This is it. This is how it should be," the male male and female harmonies thing, and you know, we've always grown up, we've grown up with the music of the 60s, sort of being thrown at us by our parents. So it's kind of inevitable, really, and like, that's what we listened to all the time, really, as well as all the other stuff, but we felt like we could do it. That was where our tastes and sort of talents lie in that kind of, that world.

Georgie Fuller: And what makes us feel great.

Will Turner: Yeah.

Georgie Fuller: Those records are what move me the most, make me want to kick down doors and hug people, and, you know, if that's the music that makes you feel that way, I feel like that's the road you're going to take if you're going to create some.

Ayisha Jaffer: Yeah.

Will Turner: Yeah, it seemed inevitable really. As soon as I put George's voice on, I was like "Whoa, this is it. This is what we're doing now." And it's a seems to be, people seem to like it, which is cool.

Ayisha Jaffer: Yeah, just a nearly sold-out U.S. tour!

Will Turner: Yeah, yeah. It's a little bit mind blowing. Yeah.

Ayisha Jaffer: Number one knocking out Brandi Carlile. So like, and you touched on this: I know the goal is to make records that are your favorite records.

Georgie Fuller: Yeah!

Ayisha Jaffer: Someone's favorite record. So what are those favorite records for you guys?

Will Turner: Woooah!

Georgie Fuller: I mean...

Ayisha Jaffer: It's a big question.

Georgie Fuller: It's a long list.

Will Turner: Yeah. Let It Bleed by the Stones; Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, Déjà Vu , you know, a favorite.

Georgie Fuller: Aretha Franklin.

Will Turner: Yeah, I mean, that whole era.

Georgie Fuller: Joni Mitchell. I mean, the... it's kind of, we could get very specific on each kind of area. But you know, as a whole, I think it's, it's like putting everything into the pot, and mixing it up and going. "Well, what have we got in 2022?" You know, from from all of that glorious stuff that we love.

The Heavy Heavy perform in The Current studio

Ayisha Jaffer: You mixed it up, and it didn't turn gray. It turned into this, like rainbow of colors. I love that. Well, this, isn't it. I heard that you guys have written hundreds of songs now in these last couple of years. And I'm wondering if that's stillness or inspiration and excitement or...? And then like, of course, I have the cheeky question of like, "When can we expect a full album?"

Georgie Fuller: Well, this guy never stops writing.

Will Turner: Yeah, sort of just comes. There's no, there's no real... I don't know, it just happens. So yeah, I'm trying to fill a gap in my own brain of what I want to hear. I want to hear more of certain things. So I just keep making more. And yeah, there'll be more next year. But at the moment, we're sort of putting all these various demos into a kind of pile and working out just what to do with it. You know, we could go quite a few avenues of, you know, direction; we could do quite a few different things. But yeah, it's coming together. And we hope it will be ready next year, sort of mid to late next year, I think.

Ayisha Jaffer: Yeah, I would say that's exciting. Well, also, so this is a question of kind of for musicians because you seemingly came out of nowhere, right? So like for an aspiring musician, I know that you probably put out music before you were signed to ATO. But it's shown as a debut record on ATO. So I always think of that as a lot of hard work and a little bit of luck. But what is your happenstance story to getting to that, and no pressure, because I know your exec's, like, over there.

Will Turner: They called us one day, didn't they?

Georgie Fuller: They did. That's the crazy thing. Like, I think you dream of this situation, but it might never happen. But if you're compelled to create, you have to create, and you work hard, and you do loads of different jobs, and you keep going and you get doors shut on you. And I don't know; something happened. And I mean, well, I'll tell you what happened: It was we were found on social media. I complain about the thing, but it's where we were discovered, so you've got to love it. And yeah, they... we were put on a playlist. And then someone heard that and they sent it to the record label and the record label sent it to management. And suddenly everything kind of came together in about three days after wanting it for years and years and years and years and years. You know?

Ayisha Jaffer: And now you're miles and miles down the road, and here we go.

Georgie Fuller: Down the river!

Ayisha Jaffer: Exactly. I mean, yeah, we got this, we can make this a whole story.

The Heavy Heavy perform in The Current studio

Ayisha Jaffer: Before I let you guys go, is there anything else you want our listeners to know? Because you're new here around the block, and I want them to know you?

Georgie Fuller: I don't know.

Will Turner: I don't think we've got an answer for that.

Georgie Fuller: I don't think we have an... Do we have an answer for that?

Ayisha Jaffer: Go to the shows.

Georgie Fuller: Yeah! Come see the shows. Come buy a vinyl, come get it signed. We want to meet you, and let's have a great time.

Will Turner: Yeah, let's have some good times.

Ayisha Jaffer: Awesome. Well, thank you guys so much. The Heavy Heavy, Life and Life Only is out now, here at The Current studios. Thank you, guys.

Georgie Fuller: Thank you so much.

The Heavy Heavy: “It’s been a baptism of fire”

Meet the Brighton duo dazzling America with dreamy 60s rock and roll

It takes some British bands years to build a following in the States, if they ever do. The Heavy Heavy has seduced America with six songs. Off the back of their debut EP, Life and Life Only, Georgie Fuller and Will Turner are wrapping up a 45 date tour, bringing their sun-drenched, 60s-inspired rock and roll to enamoured audiences all across the USA.

“It’s been a long time on the road,” says Georgie into the phone. She and Will are speaking on the move, driving from Salt Lake City to Fort Collins, one of their final dates. “It kind of feels crazy to think about when we were in Nashville at the start.” There’s not a lot of rest waiting for them after it’s all done either. “We go straight to Rolling Stone Beach Festival in Germany, and then we do, like, three dates in the UK and then we go back out to Europe. So we’re not really stopping until mid-December.”

The Heavy Heavy - All My Dreams (Official Video)

The Heavy Heavy are at the start of what could potentially be an astronomical rise, already garnering an international fanbase since the release of Life And Life Only in June of this year. On November 15, they will be one of the First Fifty bands debuted by The Great Escape Festival, the UK’s premiere discovery ground for new music, as they take to the stage of London’s Oslo.

“That’s going to be such a highlight for us,” says Georgie. “Particularly for me, because I’m from Brighton. The Great Escape has always been – I mean, it is kind of for everyone in the UK – that place where you can go and get your foot in the door.”

It feels very likely that their Oslo show will provide a similar opportunity for UK audiences – a chance to get a foot in the door before The Heavy Heavy rise out of easy reach.

The Heavy Heavy - Miles And Miles (Official Video)

Can you tell me about where The Heavy Heavy began?

Will: So, me and Georgia have been making music for sort of 10 years, on and off, working on various different projects. I was in another band doing similar sort of retro stuff to The Heavy Heavy and that kind of wound up at the same time as I was trying Georgie on some demos of that sound. And then all of a sudden, The Heavy Heavy was born with all this vocal stacking thing going on. So then we started to try to set things up just before COVID.

Georgie: You can imagine how that went.

Will: We didn’t get too far with that. Since then we’ve put the band together and since February this year, it’s been flat out.

Georgie: All systems go.

How did you spend that lockdown period? Were you passing stuff back and forward between you?

Will: Well, I moved to London to move in with George. So we were together. We were just writing music and we were both trying to find work at the time, so it was kind of a tumultuous, but also good for the music.

Georgie: It was very good for the music and actually, speaking to a lot of creatives since, a lot of people thrived in that period. More than I think a lot of us thought we would.

The Heavy Heavy - Man of the Hills (Official Live Session)

You must have been very ready to play for audiences by the time lockdown ended.

Georgie: Yeah, absolutely. It’s kind of weird. Everything feels like it’s happened in the most organic way.

What was your first official gig like?

Georgie: Our first official gig was supporting Black Pumas.

Will: It was in front of like 2000 people in Oslo.

Georgie: That was absolutely nuts. Because before that, we’d done like six gigs in Brighton and Portsmouth. And then management and label got involved and they were like, “You’re playing massive capacity venues with Black Pumas.”

What was amazing about opening for Pumas is that their fans are proper music lovers. So they get down to the support, because they know that they’ll have been specially picked, you know, and they’re hungry to discover new bands. It was super amazing and pretty scary.

Will: It was a baptism of fire.

Have the nerves eased off now that you’re so far into this tour?

Will: Yeah, I’ve never cared for that myself.

Georgie: But I get stage fright. Well, I don’t get stage fright – I get nervous. I get excited. Yeah. But it’s definitely easing off.

It sounds like from the very beginning you both had quite a professional approach to this project – it wasn’t just the two of you messing around with music.

Georgie: 100%. We’re not 22 and just throwing something together. We care about the sound, we care about the look. Even the way we behave on tour with crew… you just can’t be an asshole basically.

Do you think that’s something some 22-year-old bands maybe haven’t figured out yet?

Georgie: Yeah, I think there’s still this feeling of like, “I’m in a rock and roll, I’m gonna get f*cked up.” And no one likes you when you’re like that. There’s a lot of stuff to do, there’s a lot of moving parts, so get it together.

The Heavy Heavy - Go Down River (Karma Sessions)

You both must have been quite grateful then to meet another person who shared your perspective.

Georgie: Very much so, but I suppose we’ve known each other for 10 years, so we’ve always known that. It was just that right moment where the catalyst happened and it came together, but we always knew it’d be good.

There’s been a lot of excitement surrounding your debut EP. What’s that journey been like with Life And Life Only ?

Georgie: It’s been really amazing because obviously – I don’t want to say it’s ‘just’ an EP, but it is, you know, it’s not a full-length album. And here in the States, we’re in the Top 10 on Triple A Radio, and we’re a band from the UK with six songs out – how has that happened? The feeling of people being into this sound, people loving it as much as we do, is really exciting.

What were your influences when you set about putting that sound down?

Will: It’s all very much 60s – Rolling Stones, Allman Brothers, Janis Joplin, Delaney & Bonnie, Fleetwood Mac, also some contemporary stuff as well. We’re kind of basing the sound around late 60s LA. But other people we like, like Michael Kiwanuka and the Black Keys, they’re all in there…

Georgie: Leon Bridge, Father John Misty…

Will: So we’re just putting it all together in a big pot.

Georgie: Yeah. All the sounds that we love.

Did you listen to 60s music growing up?

Georgie: We both grew up heavily into that era. Our parents were just injecting it into our veins from a very early age.

The Heavy Heavy - Miles and Miles (Official Live Session)

Do you think you would have liked to be in that scene in the 60s, making music?

Will: Oh, definitely.

Georgie: Oh, yeah.

Will: I’d have had hair down to my feet.

Georgie: I mean, I’m not sure about a lot of the human rights aspects of that era. I always kind of romanticise it, and actually, I think, if I really was there it really might not be as great as it is in my fantasy. But I’d definitely want to spend a day. I’d just hang out with Janis.

What kind of music are you listening to at the moment?

Will: A lot of Dope Lemon and Babe Rainbow… there’s some cool stuff going around.

You guys were signed to American record label and, as you were saying, you’ve very quickly found an audience out there. Do you find that the audience in the States differs much from audiences in the UK?

Will: To be honest, we’ve not done too much in the UK to really have a good enough reference. The Americans are certainly very receptive and vocal. In that sense, maybe they’re slightly more up for it? But I would say we haven’t done enough in the UK to really have a reference, because we’ve done, I think, 45 gigs over here on this tour. And we’ve done about six in Europe.

Georgie: We’ve only done one in England.

Will: We’ll let you know in about a month!

You’ve had a really interesting journey – a lot of bands coming up just playing their hometown for quite a while. It takes a lot of groups years to break the States and you guys have gone straight over!

Georgie: I know! Well, we’re kind of lucky in that way that both our management and label are over here. So yeah, they just threw us in at the deep end. And I mean, it’s pretty cool.

It hasn’t been a culture shock at all?

Will: Oh, it’s quite different over here, but not too much.

Georgie: I’d just say everyone is so friendly. We haven’t met a horrible person yet. They love live music. They’re so appreciative, they’re like “Thank you so much for coming!” Like in Salt Lake City – it’s not like a massive events town so I think…

Will: They’re just happy to see you there.

Georgie: It’s like, “Oh my god some live music!”

The Heavy Heavy - Real Love Baby (Father John Misty Cover)

What are your aims for 2023?

Will: Do loads more gigs and festivals, get out there so more people hear us, and make an album if we get some time.

Is an album in the works?

Will: Oh, yeah. We’re going to get going on that properly soon. But yes, it’s coming.

How are you approaching the album?

Will: At this point we’re not conceptualising anything, it’ll just be as many really, really good songs as we can put in a package. I think down the road maybe we’ll do something conceptual. For now, we’re just gonna put more songs out, I think.

Georgie: Yeah, because we really didn’t expect this to happen. So the album will be an expansion of what tThe Heavy Heavy is at this point.

If you hadn’t formed The Heavy Heavy, what do you guys think you would be doing now?

Georgie: Crying myself to sleep.

Will: I’d be putting wires underneath floors. No, I’d be making music in some form, but it would be much less fun.

The Heavy Heavy have been named one of Ticketmaster’s Breakthrough 2023 artists , and they will play The Great Escape festival in Brighton in May, with tickets available here .

Introducing The Heavy Heavy: Brighton, UK's Most Blissed-Out Band Releases Debut EP on ATO Records

Today,  ATO Records  introduces  The Heavy Heavy . Led by Will Turner and Georgie Fuller, the Brighton, UK-based band warps time and place through an unfettered collision of rock n roll, psychedelic blues, acid rock and sunshine pop. Across their debut  Life and Life Only  EP, the group breathes incandescent new energy into sounds from decades ago, transcending eras with euphoric ease as they tap into musical touchstones that range from folk-blues duo Delaney & Bonnie, Peter Green-era Fleetwood Mac and British Invasion acts like The Hollies, to a sonic alchemy all their own. Full of effusive harmonies and fuzzed-out guitar on tracks like the whirlwind road trip of  "Miles and Miles,"  the near-operatic epic of "Sleeping on Grassy Ground," the rapturous opening of "All My Dreams," and "Go Down River," the first song they ever recorded together,  Life and Life Only  pulls listeners into a sublime fugue state, leaving one newly awakened to infinite possibilities.

An expanded  Life and Life Only  is now available on all digital platforms via ATO Records, including remastered versions of the EP's original five songs, plus the previously unreleased "Why Don't You Call?," a single edit of "Miles and Miles," unseen artwork and more.

Listen to  Life and Life Only , and pre-order the EP's first-ever vinyl release, available worldwide on July 22nd:  https://atorecords-ffm.com/thh_life

Watch the brand new music video for  "Miles and Miles,"  filmed in Brighton and out today, which sees The Heavy Heavy hitchhike through the pastoral type of countryside their music evokes, in between roaring sets at the rock clubs they continue to frequent across the UK:  https://atorecords-ffm.com/thh_miles

While The Heavy Heavy self-produced  Life and Life Only  in a London flat, the music begs to be blared across the festival fields they will soon be playing. Channeling the enchanted energy of Will Turner's Malvern homeland — a stretch of England famous for the healing qualities of its water, and ancient trees where the Druids used to worship — songs like "Man of the Hills" prove a transportive power they are about to bring on the road this fall.

Recently extended into a five-piece lineup with an even more vast, harmony-laden sound, The Heavy Heavy will head to the  United States  for the very first time in  September . A stint at Nashville's  AmericanaFest  will be followed by shows with Black Pumas, St. Paul and The Broken Bones, and The Record Company, plus headline dates at  New York City's Mercury Lounge  on Sept 28th and  Los Angeles' Troubadour  on Oct 24th. Find tickets  here , and stay tuned for a major fall tour to be announced this month.

The Heavy Heavy's music has recently been heard on shows like Amazon's  Outer Range , NBC's  Manifest , CW's  Walker  and  Superman & Lois , but having written and recorded hundreds of new songs in the last two years alone, a full-length debut is slated for 2023. "The driving force behind all our songwriting is to feel good, and to make other people feel good too," says Georgie Fuller, whose accomplished young career has also included performing at Montreux Jazz Festival as a teenager, as well as acting in the London theater.

The Heavy Heavy: “Our sound? The Rolling Stones meets The Mamas & The Papas”

Each week in First On, we introduce a shit-hot artist you’ll see opening the bill for your favourite act. The retro-rockers on evoking the greats of the past (without pastiche) and hitting hit the road with Black Pumas

The Heavy Heavy

One of the hardest parts in this job is nailing a comparison. Artists groan when their work is pitched against someone else’s, no matter if it’s right on the money; journalists, meanwhile, quake at the idea of making one in fear it’ll blow up in their face and feature as the key storyline in the artist’s next press campaign… been there! Best, then, to push the artist to do it themselves, and not let them weasel out of it with a “we like a bit of everything” before they curate an ill-fitting ‘influences’ playlist for Spotify.

The Heavy Heavy , thankfully, have no qualms over comparing their sound and their work to their heroes. Their answers? The Rolling Stones and The Mamas & The Papas . “The Stones are the bottom of everything we do,” Will Turner, one half of the Brighton duo, keenly tells NME of the key influences behind ‘Life and Life Only’, the band’s debut EP that’ll be released on vinyl this week (July 22).

“One of the main goals for us is to make people feel good,” adds vocalist and songwriter Georgie Fuller. “And there’s so much music out there that’s sad, but The Rolling Stones have this magical quality to make you feel good and feel like life’s a party. And The Mamas & The Papas had the glistening West Coast sound that we love, too.”

It’s this attitude that makes ‘Life and Life Only’ such a refreshing listen. This is folk-rock that unashamedly harks back to what Turner calls his favourite period of music: lush ‘60s pop through to the early ‘70s, and the birth of the digital era. In the wrong hands, this refined mindset would sound crusty, snobby and tiresome, but here that approach generates songs that are familiar, accessible and rather quite exciting.

“We’re not trying to create a pastiche or make another sound that’s identical to something that exists, but to carry on what we believe is the greatest era of music,” Fuller says. Michael Kiwanuka , Leon Bridges and Paolo Nutini are such acts who, like them, aren’t repeating history, but instead taking their inspiration from it, and they sound like some of the “coolest records ever”.

Turner is more blatant: “There was a similar set of ingredients in that 10-year period that I think was the best sound ever, whether that was Joe Cocker , The Beatles or Led Zeppelin . We want to try and exact those ingredients and put them in every song that we do. Aim for Aretha Franklin , going for Bob Dylan … we want to go that high. I don’t think there’s any reason to settle for anything less than the ‘best ever’.”

‘Go Down River’, the first song the pair worked on together, is a rich soul ballad that acts as the midway point of The Band , Otis Redding and Beach Boys drummer Dennis Wilson . ‘All My Dreams’, a funk-rock groover, has hints of Steppenwolf and Janis Joplin , and the harmonies on ‘Man Of The Hills’ appear plucked directly from The Mamas & The Papas’ ‘Dedicated To The One I Love’.

The Heavy Heavy

It’s a sound Turner has been chasing for over a decade. His previous band fizzled out, but a chance appearance from Fuller on one of their tracks opened their mind to a new way of working. “Something about the way my voice hit the mic and the way he produces the sound, we had a moment where we were like, ‘Woah!’” Fuller says.

In little over two-and-a-half years, the pair have released their debut EP, expanded to a five-piece band and signed to ATO Records, home to Nilüfer Yanya , Alabama Shakes and Black Pumas . Things appear to be accelerating: not only did they recently appear on CBS’ Saturday Morning TV show for a live performance of their Americana-tinged single ‘Miles & Miles’, but they also just completed a support slot on labelmates Black Pumas’ European tour.

It was, incredibly, the band’s first-ever full tour and saw them playing to growing venues across the continent. They’re grateful that the psych-soul band’s fans got down early for their set and made up for lost time by snapping up their merch. “They’d buy it, put the t-shirt on and then stick out their bellies, and we’d sign the tops for these slightly rotund German men,” Turner laughs.

Aside from the merch takings, valuable lessons were learned. They were in awe of Black Pumas frontman Eric Burton’s magnetic stage presence, and geeked out with guitarist and producer Adrian Quesada on sound technique: it’s the kind of advice they’ll use when stitching together their debut album later this year, for which they have 40 to 50 demos.

Most of all, it set a new benchmark, and another chance to follow in the footsteps of those they consider the best. “Watching them up close and realising how they got to this level was a huge eye-opener,” Fuller says. “It made us think, ‘Fuck, if we work hard like they do, this might be possible for us.’”

The Heavy Heavy’s ‘Life and Life Only’ EP is released on vinyl via ATO Records this week (July 22)

Virtual reality could make seeing your favorite band less expensive, if these artists have their way

H igh prices for concert tickets have made it difficult for many music fans to see their favorite bands. But that could change soon — with the help of virtual reality.

Heavy-metal band Avenged Sevenfold and rapper T-Pain are among a growing number of artists who are using virtual reality to connect with their fans at a more affordable price.

In a studio in Southern California earlier this year, T-Pain — the rapper known for popularizing Auto-Tune with hits such as “Buy U a Drank” and “Bartender” — performed in front of a green screen. The resulting video will become a concert fans can watch via VR headset.

Around the same time, Avenged Sevenfold  completed its first virtual-reality concert, titled “Looking Inside.” Fans can watch the 26 minutes of immersive music and visuals via Apple Vision Pro and Meta Quest 3 headsets at a cost of $12.99.

“It was a way to explore this new medium,” lead singer Matt Sanders said in an interview. “It is meant as a new way to get to fans, much like YouTube and Blu Ray. We are always toggling that line in reaching people, but we still plan to tour.”

The band shot the video over a few days in front of a green screen, and the footage was then inserted into a computer-generated world. Postproduction took a couple of weeks. “I was blown away by the finished product,” Sanders said, adding, “There were also things I would have done differently, like not looking at the director” during filming.

In an era when tickets for the final performances of U2’s residency at the Sphere in Las Vegas sold for an average price of $800 to $1,000, VR technology offers a more affordable option for fans. It’s also a tantalizing opportunity, as mixed media looks for consumer uses.

Gohree Kim, vice president of marketing at virtual-reality entertainment startup AmazeVR, which works with Avenged Sevenfold and others, thinks VR shows are inevitable.

“We work with a lot of artists who are moving in that direction,” Kim said in an interview. She said that in May, an internationally known artist plans to announce an hour-long VR performance that will available later this year in movie theaters in the U.S., Japan and South Korea.

“This is an affordable option and one for those with physical limitations in attending [shows],” said Lija Hogan, principal of experience research strategy at user-experience platform UserTesting and a lecturer at the University of Michigan. People can “enjoy a show on their own terms,” she said.

Consumers — many of them younger — are intrigued about the technology.

Nearly 96% are willing to view concerts and festivals using a VR headset, and a majority are ready to spend between $51 and $250, according to an April 25 survey of 250 consumers by AmazeVR.

Live events could fetch more: About 30% of the respondents said they would pony up between $101 and $250, while 6% said they were ready to spend more than $500 .

The mixed-media concert experience

Dazzling visual effects have been a staple of concerts since the 1970s, from The Who’s laser light shows to the iconic wall in Pink Floyd’s 1980-81 “The Wall Tour.” Dry ice and projection screens upped the ante. Abba used holograms, and Metallica pushed things further with an Imax film.

U2, meanwhile, has been down the virtual path before. In 2015, it partnered with the now-defunct app Meerkat to livestream shows, which were distributed on Twitter and Facebook and shown at the venue. The livestreaming experience was filmed by a fan who was onstage with the band and projected onto a gigantic oblong screen at the show, and was available to anyone with the Meerkat app.

What’s next for virtual and augmented reality? U2’s shows at the Sphere offer a mind-blowing experience for fans who can afford the equally mind-blowing ticket prices.

The next frontier will be live VR shows, although getting there will require a long gestation process. The technology is likely to start with videos of less than an hour before expanding them in length and going live. A lot depends on bulky headsets shrinking in size and coming down in price, as well as consumers taking advantage of VR/AR apps, according to mixed-media experts.

“It will take three to five years because of the weight of Apple’s headset, one pound; its price, $3,500; and the audio experience is not great,” Robert Mooring, video lead at AMF Media Group & Armanino, said in an interview. “It probably needs several iterations, from snow goggles to glasses.”

Documentarians and video experts interviewed by MarketWatch uniformly agreed that Apple Inc.’s Vision Pro, Meta Platforms Inc.’s Oculus and Alphabet Inc.’s YouTube livestreaming platform need refinements and killer apps in order to establish a wider audience for VR.

“3-D technology doesn’t feel like that terrific an experience,” said Alex Vlacos, media director at software company Druva. “Is [VR] terrific now, compared to a 4-K screen? It is painful. I felt like I was having a seizure.”

Sanders was more optimistic. “History will tell if we are successful,” he said. “But if you look at some of these concerts, they cost as much as a headset.”
