Who is the Highest-Grossing Touring Artist of 2022?

which touring artist made the most money in 2022

Who is the highest-grossing touring artist of 2022 so far? The answer may surprise you.

In the first half of 2022, the music industry heard loud and clear that fans — particularly in North America — are ready to get out and see live music again. The box-office figures  reported to  Pollstar  for the year’s first two quarters show strong demand for live entertainment, and fans are willing to pay a pretty penny for it, too.

The average number of tickets sold, average ticket price, and average gross all showed solid upward movement this year in all 100 of the top North American tours compared with 2019 — the last full year of live activity before the COVID-19 pandemic.

Gross averages in the year’s first half show an average box-office gain of $856,206 per show, a 24.4% increase over 2019’s midyear gross average of $688,535. This is partly due to the rise in the average ticket price — $108.20 compared to 2019’s average price of $91.86 — a difference of 17.8%.

So who is the highest grossing touring artist in 2022 so far? Latin superstar Bad Bunny has dominated the touring circuit in 2022 for worldwide and North American tours.

Phil Collins , Tony Banks , and Mike Rutherford’s final run with Genesis for their The Last Domino? Tour came in second globally with $72 million, with Elton John in a close third place at $70 million for his Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour. Others in the top ten include The Eagles’ ongoing Hotel California tour, which continues to perform well at $44 million for a solid seventh place.

The list of the Top 30 highest-grossing concert tours of the year has been released!

Pollstar has dropped the touring data for the year and all of the concerts this year grossed $6.28 billion collectively, which is a new record.

Shockingly and sadly, only two women are in the Top 30 and you’re probably going to be surprised by some of the names on this list.

Def-Leppard-In-Conversation

According to Billboard , Def Leppard and Mötley Crüe, Guns N’ Roses , My Chemical Romance, Iron Maiden and Trans-Siberian Orchestra were among the top-grossing touring artists of the 12-month period ending on October 31.

In the magazine’s just-published year-end Boxscore chart, which was topped by Puerto Rican rapper and singer Bad Bunny, The Rolling Stones were the highest-ranked rock act (and sixth overall),with a combined gross of $179 million from 20 reported concerts. The band sold 950,000 tickets around the world during the 12-month time frame that determined the chart’s rankings.

Def Leppard and Mötley Crüe’s ‘The Stadium Tour’ did especially brisk business, as the two bands’ summer run — which ranked No. 8 on the year-end chart — grossed $173 million from sales of more than 1.3 million tickets at 35 reported shows.

Trans-Siberian Orchestra’s annual holiday tour continued to be a major draw, as the Yuletide rockers — who ranked 36th on the chart — sold more than 767,000 tickets at 98 reported shows during their 2021 tour for a gross of $55 million.

The only other heavy metal or hard rock group included on Billboard’s chart — which ranked artists by gross income rather than the number of tickets sold — was Iron Maiden (No. 26),which grossed $76 million from sales of 985,000 tickets across 47 reported performances.

It should be noted these figures only include gross ticket sales and do not represent an artist’s actual earnings. Each artist usually incurs significant expenses — including management, booking agent, promoter, venue, travel, equipment (sound, lights and staging), hired musicians, crew, hotels and buses.

Billboard Top-Grossing Touring Artists for 2022 included the following rock acts:

06. THE ROLLING STONES – $179,349,815 (20 shows) 07. RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS – $176,998,650 (31 shows) 08. DEF LEPPARD + MÖTLEY CRÜE – $173,474,649 (35 shows) 17. From the Top, Touring Looks Better Than Ever

Artists have been back on the road for a full year, and the top 10 highest-grossing tours are thriving. Will that success spread?

This story is part of Billboard ‘s The Year in Touring package — read more stories about the top acts, tours and venues of 2022 here .

Was 2022 the worst “best year ever?” By some measures, the concert business had its most successful year. From Nov. 1, 2021, to Oct. 31, 2022, the top 10 tours grossed a combined $2.2 billion in ticket sales, according to Billboard Boxscore, 36% more than they did in 2019, the previous full year of touring, and more than four times the $519 million they took in during the pandemic-limited 2021.

Bad Bunny Makes History as Top Touring Act for 2022: The Year in Charts

Some of this growth follows an existing trend. Since 2013, the live business has grown steadily between 5% and 10% a year, thanks to international expansion and an increasing number of megatours. In 2013, eight acts took in over $100 million at the box office — Bon Jovi , P!nk , Bruce Springsteen , Beyoncé , Rihanna , Taylor Swift , The Rolling Stones and the Cirque du Soleil Michael Jackson show.

Trending on Billboard

The bad news, however, is twofold: More work for fewer employees in the wake of pandemic layoffs, plus rising costs for staffing, production and travel, threaten to erode profits. “We are working harder than ever just to try and make sure we don’t lose any ground,” says Jim Cressman, founder and owner of Canadian independent promoter Invictus Entertainment.

Cressman and Live Nation executives say that fans also seem to be changing their concertgoing habits by waiting longer to buy tickets. About 30% of tickets for this year’s Lollapalooza festival in Chicago were purchased five days or fewer before the event, according to Live Nation. It’s a concerning trend for promoters and tour organizers who have become accustomed to scaling event costs up and down based on projections from early sales. Fans are also getting wise to the fact that ticket prices, especially on the secondary market, tend to drop over time.

The names of the top 10 tours won’t surprise anyone who follows the industry. No. 1 is Bad Bunny , who did two tours during this time frame: El Último Tour del Mundo, which ran from February to April and grossed $116 million, and World’s Hottest Tour, which brought in $246 million from August to the end of the Billboard Boxscore touring year; it will run until Dec. 10. The tour dates within this time frame, as well as isolated hometown shows in Puerto Rico, grossed a combined $373.5 million, the third-highest year-end total in Boxscore history after Ed Sheeran ’s $429.5 million in 2018 and The Rolling Stones’ $425 million in 2006.

This is the first year that each tour in the top 10 grossed over $100 million and the top five each took in more than $200 million. Some of that is due to higher ticket prices: Bad Bunny tickets cost an average of $201, while tickets to Sheeran’s No. 1 2019 ÷ (Divide) shows cost an average of $86; the average ticket price of a top 10 tour was $130.76, up from $114.29 in 2019. Some of that growth comes from inflation, of course, while some is from a shift to higher ticket prices in order to capture revenue that once went to the secondary market. “The spending levels are really the same,” says Live Nation Global Touring chairman Arthur Fogel. “It’s just that artists are capturing more of it than ever before.”

Farther down the Top Tours chart, the growth also stays consistent. The top 40 tours grossed a total of $4.6 billion, up from a total of $3.5 billion in 2019, a difference of 32%

The New Scorecard

This year, Billboard Boxscore created a new chart to rank tours by number of tickets sold, not just revenue, although that information had already been included. And although promoters were concerned earlier in 2022 that touring market oversaturation would mean concerts drew fewer fans, the chart actually shows the opposite — major concerts attracted larger audiences without cannibalizing other shows. In 2022, a combined 17.1 million people saw the top 10 attended tours, up 21% from a combined 2019 attendance of 14.1 million. This year also marked the first time that 19 of the top 20 attended tours drew over 900,000 fans.

The top 10 tours also represent one of the youngest lists in recent years, with an average headliner age of 49.3, as opposed to 51.2 in 2019 and 54.6 in 2021. The oldest act was The Rolling Stones — Mick Jagger and Keith Richards will both be 79 by the end of the year, and Ron Wood is 75. The youngest acts were Harry Styles and Bad Bunny, both of whom turned 28 this year.

As in years past, Live Nation dominated the business, exclusively promoting half of the top 20 — which grossed a combined $1.5 billion — as well as Bad Bunny’s stadium shows, in collaboration with Cárdenas Marketing Network, and some shows for My Chemical Romance and Paul McCartney . AEG Presents follows with a handful of global tours, including Elton John , that combined accounted for $843 million. CMN powered Bad Bunny at No. 1 and Daddy Yankee at No. 13, while Mercury Concerts led the Latin American dates for Guns N’ Roses . Sheeran, at No. 3, was promoted by a mix of buyers throughout Europe.

On the agency front, the leader is Creative Artists Agency, with eight acts in the top 20: Styles, Red Hot Chili Peppers , The Weeknd , Lady Gaga , the Eagles , Dua Lipa (WME reps her in Europe), Justin Bieber and My Chemical Romance. Wasserman Music had four clients in the top 20 — Sheeran, Coldplay , Kenny Chesney and Billie Eilish — while UTA had two: Bad Bunny and Guns N’ Roses.

Three of the top tours — John, McCartney and The Rolling Stones — have global touring deals with AEG but don’t have a traditional booking agency deal. WME had only one artist in the top 20 with Daddy Yankee. So did the Neal Agency, started in February by Austin Neal, son of longtime WME agent Kevin Neal. Austin formed the agency to represent Morgan Wallen , who took a hiatus from touring after his use of a racial slur was caught on video in 2021. Wallen grossed $128 million in 2022 from 66 shows.

The World's Most Successful Music Festivals

The advent of large-scale music streaming in the early 2010s was seen as a godsend for an industry struggling with illegal downloads and problems adapting successful digital media solutions. While labels and platforms like Spotify, Amazon Prime Music or Apple Music profit to this day, medium-sized artists rarely see the returns of the streaming boom.

With live music , it's different, with many acts and bands reportedly primarily making their money touring and selling merchandise. According to t he most recent edition of PwC's Global Entertainment and Media Outlook , global live revenues almost rubberbanded back to pre-pandemic levels in 2022, surpassing $20 billion and estimated to grow to $25 billion by 2027. Pollstar data suggests that last year's tours by Taylor Swift, Beyoncé and Bruce Springsteen alone were responsible for ten percent of these revenues.

Apart from tours dedicated to one specific artist or band, music festivals also play a significant role in the industry's revenue mix. As Pollstar's year-end wrapup shows, the top 8 festivals worldwide in terms of gross revenue generated $192 million in 2023. Topping the charts are the Outside Lands Music & Arts Festival, one of the biggest independently-owned music festivals in the U.S. taking place in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park since 2008, and the Hard Summer Music Festival, which takes place in Hollywood Park in Los Angeles and is mostly focused on electronic music. The third entry is an outlier not only in terms of tickets sold, but also in terms of artists present. Phish: Riviera Maya is dedicated solely to the eponymous jam band and was held in February 2023 in Cancun.

Another notable facet of Pollstar's roundup: Seven out of eight best-selling festivals are located in the Americas, with Mexico and the United States taking up six of eight slots. The sole European entrant is Germany's Hurricane Festival, which grossed $20.1 million in 2023 across 233,000 tickets sold. The first festival on the top 20 list not being held in the Americas or Germany is Austria's FM4 Festival, which grossed $10.7 million.

Concert films are more popular than they have been in a long time, thanks in part to superstars like Taylor Swift and Beyoncé, who scored box office wins in 2023 with filmed performances. BTS singer Suga is the latest musical favorite who has found success in cinemas across the U.S. with his first theatrically-released film.

SUGA | Agust D TOUR 'D-DAY' THE MOVIE finished the weekend as one of the top-grossing films in America. The title lands at No. 10 on the list of the highest-grossing releases in theaters across the U.S. from April 12 through 14.

According to Box Office Mojo , Suga’s movie pulled in just under $1 million at the U.S. box office. The film racked up a total of $990,000 in ticket sales, but that’s not the full story of the title’s performance.

SUGA | Agust D TOUR 'D-DAY' THE MOVIE is one of four titles that debut inside the top 10 as this past weekend finished. Civil War opens at No. 1, with more than $25 million domestically. Just ahead of Suga come both The Long Game at No. 8 ($1.39 million) and the re-release of Shrek 2 at No. 9 ($1.35 million).

The BTS singer’s concert film actually opened on Wednesday (April 10), so it made money before this weekend. In the U.S. alone, Suga’s movie has now earned $2.2 million domestically.

Suga claims a huge fan base in the country, and even though he’s on a career hiatus as he fulfills his military duties in his home nation of South Korea, clearly interest is still high in everything he does. He has previously found success at the box office in America with some of BTS’ projects.

Suga’s concert film features footage from his recent global tour, known simply as the Suga Agust D Tour. The BTS singer and rapper traveled the world throughout several months in 2023, hitting the stage in the U.S., Japan, Singapore, Indonesia, and, of course, South Korea.

Nicki Minaj is cementing herself as the queen of hip-hop. Making history recently with the highest-grossing tour by a female rapper of all time, her Pink Friday 2 tour hit the milestone within the first 17 performances. The tour has officially grossed a record-setting $34.9 million USD with under 20 shows.

According to Touring Data, the Trinidadian rapper has also claimed the top spot for having the highest-grossing concert. On March 30, the artist reported a whopping $2.858 million USD at her Madison Square Garden show. It comes as no surprise to hip-hop fans that Minaj still remains at the top, a decade and a half after she entered the industry. When she released the album, it netted the largest first week vinyl sales by any female rapper in history. The track “Super Freaky Girl” off the album saw Minaj hit her first No. 1 single as a solo artist. Her career longevity has been recognized by many across the industry. In a 2023 episode of Stepping Into the Shade Room , Ja Rule reiterated her position in the game stating that before her there were no female MCs like her. “Minaj re-opened the door” for her peers which made way for the likes of GloRilla and Ice Spice, Cardi B, Megan Thee Stallion and more.

The 30 Highest-Grossing Movies of All Time

Avengers: Endgame, Avatar

Every few years, a blockbuster movie comes along and breaks the box office, joining the list of highest-grossing movies of all time.

Several of the films near the top of this list were released in the past decade, benefitting from today’s higher ticket prices, but every movie here has shown enough staying power at the worldwide box office to smash record after record.

That makes the No. 1 title, “Avatar,” even more impressive, since the underwater epic came out 15 years ago, when ticket prices were lower, yet is still on top of the worldwide list. Its sequel, “The Way of Water,” hovers not far behind at No. 3. The takeaway? Never underestimate James Cameron, since he has three out of the top four entries worldwide.

Note that this list is not adjusted for inflation; determining the top films of all time at the time they were released is an imperfect science. Looking at only domestic (U.S. and Canada) releases, the top films adjusted for inflation are estimated to be “Gone With the Wind,” “Star Wars,” “The Sound of Music,” “E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial” and “Titanic.”

The best time to visit Russia is during the months of May to September. Although Russia is the largest country and weather can vary vastly, the popular cities and locations in Russia will be experiencing a warm weather and long, sunny days during this time.

You can expect to spend around $60 – $80 for a solo traveler staying at a decently rated hotel. This price will cover food, transportation and other fees. For a more luxurious vacation, you will be spending anywhere from $150 – $250.

Russia has a lot of specialties attached to it. From ballet and theatre to vodka and Russian culture, there is a lot to expect. Famous landmarks include Lake Baikal, The Red Square, The Hermitage and Moscow Metro System.

Being the largest country on the planet, there is definitely a lot of area to cover in Russia. However, most of Russia is barren and uninhabitable. For popular tourist destinations, 2 weeks should be enough for a majestic experience of Russian culture, nature and food.

The most iconic Russian dishes include the Blini (Russian pancakes), Pelmeni, Beef Stroganoff, Syrniki, Kasha (porridge), Borscht and Okroshka. Russia is also famous for their world-renowned vodka.
