That means not choosing the Honda Rear-Facing Helmet Radar patented back in 2019 , nor the impressive breakthrough of the world’s first artificial intelligence (A.I.-powered) Honda ‘Intelligent Driver-Assistive Technology’ that was premiered around this time last year .

But adaptive cruise control?

Manageable.

According to Motorrad Online (who got their hands on the patent in the first place), this particular adaptive radar system works to detect lane changes of yourself and third-party vehicles, with the center display showing off a screen in the middle that lights up as objects come within the radar’s range.

I have a 2022 Kawasaki H2 SX SE and I love it. Most of the time I just use the regular cruise control but the adaptive does come in handy at times.

GL1500 77 mph Cruise Control speed limit fix

honda gold wing cruise control

  • Add to quote

The OEM GL1500s will not allow the CC to be set higher than 77 mph. This is easily bypassed by cutting 5th gear input wire, and splicing it to the 4th gear input. This method was written by a gentleman who has passed on, I saved it as a Word.Doc for permanent retrieval. This new post is now being recreated because the orginal thread got deleted when our forum was bought out by Motorcycle.com ( server changes lost it ) see the attachment below for a permanent file record of your own, just download the Word document.... Cruise Control Ultra Cruise - Complete Electronic Cruise Control Syste (...) this is a 3rd party alternative to adding cruise to a bike that don't have one EDIT: for '88 thru '93 there is a different fix required. See it on GoldwingDocs https://goldwingdocs.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=41533

  • My 95 Aspencade's Cruise Control sensed engine speed as well as road speed, and
  • There were inputs to the Cruise Control from 4th and 5th gear positions.
  • Cut both wires, connect the red/wht wire (4th gear) from the cruise control to ground, and leave the other wire disconnected - I could then engage the cruise in any gear up to what ever speed 4500 rpm is, or
  • Cut both wires, leave the grn/org wire to the cruise control disconnected, and connect both wires from the shifter to the red/wht wire coming from the cruise control using a diode in each wire with the cathodes away from the cruise control. I could then set the cruise control up to 80 mph in 4th gear and 100 mph in 5th.

For myself, when I had a 94, I just just cut the wire to the 5th gear input and spliced it to the 4th gear input. it worked just fine for me. After all, it is just a switch connection, it doesn't know where the input came from and that the transmission is actually in 5th gear, the ECM is being told it is in 4th gear, and therefore, it allows the RPMs to go higher for the same speed.

Cruise Control Modification (1992 - 2000 GL1500) The following modification allows the cruise control to be activated at speeds above 80 MPH. This modification can be made at two different connectors (C33 or C59). (Your choice but easier to do under the seat) 1. Remove the seat. 2. Locate the C33 Black 22-pin connector (17 wires). (Right rear side) 3. The Red/White wire connects to the (4th gear position) on the Gear Position Sensor and the Engine Control Module. 4. The Green/Orange wire connects to the (5th gear “overdrive” position) on the Gear Position Sensor and the Engine Control Module. 5. If you switch those two wires at the C33 connector, the cruise control will set at speeds above 80 MPH. Note : This modification fools the Engine Control Module, it thinks the transmission is in 4th gear when the transmission is actually in 5th “overdrive” gear. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The following might work for the 1988 - 1991 year bikes (However, I haven't tested this modification). Note : For a 1988 - 1991 year use a "Red 4-pin" connector behind the right fairing inner panel "by your right knee" (not a C33 Black 22-pin connector under the seat). Ref: 1988 Honda Service Manual, Ignition Circuit, page 16-3. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1. Remove the right lower fairing panel. 2. Locate the C59 (6-pin black) connector. (Located on top of the fan motor shroud) 3. Swap the Red/White and Green/Orange wires. (Reference items 3, 4 and 5 above)

Early bikes (thru 1992?) are not the same and this modification is not applicable. Sorry.

Oops, I thought I had included that fix.... GoldwingDocs has that fix for the earlier models. https://goldwingdocs.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=41533

honda gold wing cruise control

Anyone tested their cruise in 4th gear after switching the wires? My 93 won't set at all in 4th gear. Don't know why anyone would set cruise in 4th at all but that's just me.

My bike was a '94 and a '98, this fix works for them in 4th or 5th gear. the '88-'93 require a different fix, and I am not familiar with that wiring. the fix used in the GoldwingDocs article requires the use of a "SpeedHealer" type device, of which there are several brands available. That being the case, I would have to assume it will only work in 5th gear? again, I have not studied this method at all.

No I didn't revisit. Doesn't matter to me if 4th gear works or not. Don't know why it is even designed to work in 4th???

different bike, but my 1800 will lock the CC in 3rd gear, and I use it quite a bit. School Zones that are a mile long, are the reason why. :frown2:

honda gold wing cruise control

Is there any similar fix for the old 1200's??? Some years back I searched around the interwebs but never found anything that worked. I even tried the 4th-5th input switcheroo just to see but it didn't affect it at all.

have you looked at some of the "SpeedHealer" type devices? expensive, but they will work on a lot of difference bikes. I don't remember how the CC gets its' signal on the 1200s.... was wondering if using a cheap speed converting device in the Speed Signal line to the cruise and purposely offsetting it so the signal is "too slow" would allow the cruise to be set at a higher speed? https://www.motomummy.com/chain-kit...s-speedodrd/?gclid=CN665YP6vsQCFQ-saQod1w8AvA this one is Sale Price: $70.00

I looked at SpeedOhealer and only matches the 1800, 1200 and 1500 bikes are not listed. https://shop.bluemonkeymotorsports.com/Speedohealer-for-Honda_p_41.html GL1800 Goldwing F6B (2013-2017), GL1800 Goldwing F6C Valkyre (2014-2016),

GL 1500 cruise control

  • Add to quote

Hello - my 1999 GL 1500 has faulty cruise control. The "Cruise On" light will come on by I cannot get the speed locked in. I replaced the upper right handlebar control cluster and it didn't help. Is there something else I should be looking at? I checked all the fuses in the fuse box, and they are all good. I'd think if it was fuse related, the "Cruise On" light would not come on. Any help on this would be GREATLY appreciated as I really miss having it work! Thank you in advance!

honda gold wing cruise control

Did you replace the brass bushing on clutch handle yet? Anytime I ever had problems with cruise control setting on any of my 1500s that was the cure. Your Honda dealer has them.

The clutch handle is tight. No slop.

honda gold wing cruise control

any of the following switches will also keep it from setting the cruise hand brake switch foot brake switch clutch switch plus there is a way to turn your throttle backwards to release the cruise...not sure of a switch involved

GL1500 Cruise Control Troubleshooting Video Help

www.goldwingowners.com

Interesting video.......... thank you Ronnie 9/5/22

Not what I saiid. Is the brass bushing on clutch lever round or egg shaped when you take it out viewed from the side. I assume you are using stock handle bar levers, not the chrome ones.

Goldwing1999 said: As soon as I can, I'll check. Click to expand...

Does not take much wear on that bushing to throw things off. If you can feel a lip, I would get another one. New bushings are around $4.00.

I rode yesterday and, on a whim, I pushed the front brake lever out as hard as I could and then tried to set the cruise control. It worked and the cruise set. Apparently I have a bad brake light / cruise contol switch. I have ordered a new one and will let you know the results. Thanks for all the help!

If the switch doesn't do the trick, then replace the bushing! About 9 bucks at mama honda.

I have both on order now.

What I said.....Bushing not available for hand brake. Only clutch bushing.. Replace it, and all will be well

2023 Honda Gold Wing DCT Guide

2023 Honda Gold Wing DCT

Contents: Review – Key Features – Features & Benefits – Specifications

2023 Honda Gold Wing DCT

2023 Honda Gold Wing DCT: AUTOMATIC COMFORT.

Introducing the 2023 honda gold wing dct….

The open road is calling, and it always has been. Humans are just hard-wired to explore, to want to see what’s over the horizon. Every motorcyclist knows the feeling. And one motorcycle makes it happen better than any other: the Honda Gold Wing. All four Gold Wing trim levels this year get updated highlight strips and colors, as well as a navigation-system map update. But the best parts remain—the famously smooth 1833cc six-cylinder engine, refined bodywork for weather protection, and ample luggage. Full of innovative engineering, all Gold Wing models are Android Auto compatible, as well as offering Apple CarPlay compatibility. You can choose between a conventional six-speed transmission and our exclusive Honda automatic seven-speed DCT transmission, depending on the model. So go ahead—isn’t it time you experience the gold standard of touring bikes?

Featuring a 7-speed Automatic DCT transmission and Walking mode/reverse.

Like you, every bike has its own personality.

In 1972, the Gold Wing established itself as an iconic symbol of motorcycle touring all over the world.

It set the standard for quality, safety and comfort built into all our tourers. Whatever bike you choose, you’ll be assured of a machine that’s perfect for the journey of a lifetime.

2023 Honda Gold Wing DCT Totalmotorcycle.com Key Features

Special Features

  • 7-speed Automatic DCT transmission
  • Walking mode/reverse

Base Features

  • 1833cc six-cylinder engine
  • Twin-spar aluminum frame
  • Anti-lock brakes
  • Four ride modes

Athletic Styling

The 2023 Gold Wing takes a serious less-is-more approach when it comes to style, performance and attitude. The eye-catching bodywork still offers the excellent wind and weather protection riders have come to expect, but it’s even leaner and more aerodynamic now, exposing more of the engine and chassis. On the road, it’s also lighter, more responsive and more athletic – this is definitely not your granddaddy’s touring bike.

Adjustable Electric Windscreen

Every touring rider can appreciate the extra wind and weather protection from the Gold Wing’s fully adjustable electric-powered windscreen. For better usability, the windscreen will move to the lowest position when the ignition is turned off. When you start to ride again (5 km/h or more), the windscreen returns to the last position you set it.

Brilliant LED Lighting

Day or night, you’ll love the Gold Wing’s Brilliant LED lighting. The LED headlight design helps to light the way brilliantly when it’s dark, while the headlight and LED tail light contribute to the bike’s sleek styling. Plus, angular mirrors feature integrated self-cancelling LED turn signals. The Gold Wing is now equipped with LED fog lights.

Distinctive Wheels & TPMS

Form meets function in the Gold Wing’s distinctive wheels, which look sharp while adding to the bike’s composed handling. A wide 200 section width rear tire grips the road firmly, while the standard Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) automatically warns you of low tire pressure on all Gold Wing models and includes a dashboard readout of the actual front and rear pressure in PSI.

Android Auto + Apple CarPlay® With Siri

Get directions, make a call, receive messages, or even listen to your favourite cruising playlist through onboard controls or voice recognition – it’s easy to do all this and more by incorporating your iPhone or Android into the Gold Wing’s built-in display.

*For using Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, connection to a commercially available Bluetooth headset is necessary. Please refer to your Bluetooth headset manufacturer for optimal audio settings for use with Android Auto.

Bluetooth® Connectivity

Seamlessly connect compatible electronic devices via Bluetooth® connectivity, available on all Gold Wing and Gold Wing Tour models to conveniently enjoy MP3, iPod® and USB integration onboard.

7-inch Navigation & Audio Display

The Gold Wing’s dashboard is your multi-media info and control centre when you’re on the road. Its intuitive 7-inch LCD display houses the Honda Satellite-Linked Navigation System™ to help you find the best way to your destination. Plus, the dashboard incorporates a host of premium audio features with improved settings, and is compatible with the Sirius XM® for even more audio options (requires SiriusXM® subscription activation to use).

Smart Key Fob

For those who appreciate the ultimate in convenience and security, the Gold Wing’s smart key fob never has to leave your pocket. The proximity-key system starts the bike at the touch of a button and also conveniently opens storage compartments.

Smooth, Responsive Power

The Gold Wing gets its impressive power from an 1,833 cc horizontally opposed six-cylinder engine with four-valve Unicam® cylinder head design. Not only does this advanced engine produce loads of power from way down low in the rev range, it delivers that power in an incredibly smooth and responsive manner.

Selectable Riding Modes

Switch between four Selectable Riding Modes to easily find the power and performance to match your preferred riding style or the road conditions. Choose between Sport, Tour, Econ or Rain modes to automatically adjust throttle response, and braking characteristics. Advanced Ride Technology

Throttle-by-wire contributes to the Gold Wing’s stellar throttle response and smooth power delivery. Open road ahead? Standard electronic cruise control helps to make the ride even more relaxing.

7-Speed Dual-Clutch Transmission (DCT)

The Gold Wing Tour DCT incorporates our revolutionary 7-Speed Automatic Dual-Clutch Transmission, which takes the joy of riding to the next level by automating clutch and shift operation while retaining the direct feel of a manual transmission. DCT lets you take in the scenery and focus on your ride rather than which gear you should be in.

Walking Speed Modes

All Gold Wings with DCT transmissions feature forward/reverse Walking Speed modes that allow you to creep forward or reverse under power using the DCT system combined with the Shift Down and Shift Up levers. Walking Speed modes move the motorcycle at approximately 1.8 km/h forward and 1.2 km/h backward. Think how easy it will be to get in and out of tight parking spots with a fully loaded bike, especially if you need to roll back uphill.

Innovative Front Suspension

The Gold Wing’s innovative double-wishbone front suspension is not only revolutionary, it also improves handling and rider ergonomics. The design changes the path the wheel travels through the suspension stroke, and that allowed Honda engineers move both the engine and the rider/passenger closer to the front wheel. You get more room, and stellar road manners.

Heated Grips

Part of riding a bike is enjoying the elements. But nobody likes being cold. That’s why every Gold Wing comes equipped with heated grips as standard equipment.

Idle Stop System

The industry’s first and exclusive Idle Stop System automatically stops/starts the engine when the motorcycle is stationary. The key goals when developing this system were to make starts very quiet and smooth in addition to reducing fuel consumption and lowering noise for the riders at traffic lights. The engine stops after about 3 seconds. To restart the bike, the rider simply twists the throttle and the engine immediately starts. This feature can be manually shut off through the Vehicle Setting Menu in the infotainment system or on the right toggle Start switch.

Honda Selectable Torque Control (HSTC)

Honda Selectable Torque Control (HSTC) constantly monitors your bike’s rear-wheel speed, and adjusts torque instantly. It’s a great feature when riding in the rain, on sandy, gritty roads, over wet leaves, or anywhere else where surface conditions can compromise traction.

Hill Start Assist

Getting going when you’re stopped on an hill can be challenging, but not with the Gold Wing’s standard Hill Start Assist (HSA). This feature momentarily holds (3 seconds) your motorcycle’s position on inclines when the brakes are released and before you apply the throttle, eliminating any roll-back drama. It’s a great convenience, allowing smoother uphill launches and more rider confidence.

2023 Honda Gold Wing DCT Totalmotorcycle.com Features and Benefits

PERFORMANCE

The Gold Wing’s horizontally opposed six-cylinder engine is famously smooth and powerful. The latest version is an 1833cc design that’s over 13 pounds lighter than the previous generation (more than 8 pounds for the DCT versions).

STANDARD ON: ALL TRIMS

ALUMINUM CYLINDER SLEEVES

High-strength aluminum cylinder sleeves help reduce weight, increase cooling efficiency, and reduce engine length. The 73mm cylinder bore as well as the short, high-strength crankshaft help make the engine more compact.

UNICAM CYLINDER HEAD DESIGN

The Gold Wing’s engine uses four-valve, Unicam® cylinder head design that improves engine performance and power, and also contributes to the engine’s weight reduction from its previous generation. The four-valve per cylinder design is also a big part of the Gold Wing’s superior fuel efficiency.

7-SPEED AUTOMATIC DCT TRANSMISSION

The Gold Wing is available with a revolutionary 7-Speed Automatic DCT. The shifts in this version are faster and smoother than ever, and the overdrive seventh gear is perfect for highway cruising.

STANDARD ON: GOLD WING DCT, GOLD WING TOUR DCT, GOLD WING TOUR AIRBAG DCT

6-SPEED MANUAL TRANSMISSION

Prefer a manual transmission? The latest Gold Wing Tour offers the best conventional gearbox in Gold Wing history. Case in point: an overdrive sixth gear so highway cruising is smoother than ever.

STANDARD ON: GOLD WING TOUR

SLIPPER CLUTCH

We’ve given our manual-transmission Gold Wing models a slipper clutch, just like our premium sportbikes. It only makes sense—the 1833cc engine delivers tons of power, and the stellar chassis lets you ride this Gold Wing like a sportbike. Twisty roads? Bring ’em on!

DOUBLE-WALL EXHAUST PIPES

You may think this is just for cosmetics, but on a hot day single-wall exhaust pipes can throw off a lot of heat. The Gold Wing’s twin-wall design keeps things cooler. Plus, this is the best sounding Gold Wing we’ve ever built!

FUEL EFFICIENCY

Because the 2023 Gold Wing is light, you’d expect it to be fuel efficient. But its weight is just the start. Combined with the bike’s engine, intake system, and four-valve design, estimated fuel economy is up 22 percent from the previous generation.* Want to really squeeze the last mile out of every drop? Try the “Econ” ride mode setting.

*Honda’s fuel economy estimates are based on EPA exhaust emission measurement test procedures and are intended for comparison purposes only. Your actual mileage will vary depending on how you ride, how you maintain your vehicle, weather, road conditions, tire pressure, installation of accessories, cargo, rider and passenger weight, and other factors.

WALKING MODE

All Gold Wing models with DCT transmissions feature “Walking Mode,” which lets you creep forward or backward under power at a walking pace. Think how easy it will be to get in and out of tight parking spots with a fully loaded bike. It’s another great example of Honda technology working for you.

CRUISE CONTROL

Of course the 2023 Gold Wing still features cruise control—it was one of the first touring bikes to offer the feature. And with our advanced throttle-by-wire system, it’s better than ever.

DOUBLE WISHBONE FRONT SUSPENSION

One look and your eyes will immediately go to the Gold Wing’s radical, Honda-engineered double-wishbone front suspension. The innovative design lets us move both the engine and the rider/passenger closer to the front wheel, giving you more room for added comfort as well as stellar handling.

This latest generation all-aluminum frame is significantly lighter and more compact than previous editions. State-of-the-art die-casting lets us fine-tune chassis rigidity, giving you both a smooth ride and precise handling.

SWING ARM/REAR SUSPENSION

Using our proprietary single-sided Pro Arm® design, the aluminum swingarm houses the Gold Wing’s shaft drive. The swingarm links to the frame using a patented pivot structure that both increases stiffness and reduces weight. You get responsive handling and a smoother ride.

ANTI-LOCK BRAKES

Have to make a hard stop, fully loaded and two up? All our 2023 Gold Wing models are equipped with combined anti-lock brakes for excellent stopping power under a wide variety of road and traction conditions.

Gold Wing engines offer a wide range of user-friendly power, and you can even choose between four ride modes (Tour, Sport, Rain, and Econ). Each mode varies power output depending on the mode selected. On the Gold Wing Tour models, it also changes suspension damping, and the shift points on the DCT models.

LIGHTER OVERALL WEIGHT

Shaving weight on a motorcycle returns all sorts of benefits, from handling to acceleration to just being easier to maneuver around. We didn’t just shave ounces or grams with the latest Gold Wing. We lopped off almost 90 pounds compared to the previous generation. The lighter weight absolutely redefines this motorcycle. You thought it was fun to ride on twisty roads before? Wait until you experience this one.

LOW CENTER OF GRAVITY

It’s not just how much a motorcycle weighs; it’s how it distributes that weight. Thanks to their horizontally opposed engines, Gold Wing models have always offered a low center of gravity. The 2023 Gold Wing offers the lowest center of gravity of any bike in the class. That’s a huge benefit in handling, and it makes the bike feel lighter and easier to maneuver.

DUAL RADIAL FRONT BRAKE CALIPERS

The dual brake calipers on the Gold Wing are mounted similar to that of our World Champion RC213V MotoGP racebike. Why? The stiffer mounting reduces caliper flex and improves brake power and feel.

ELECTRONIC SUSPENSION PRELOAD

The Gold Wing Tour’s suspension features four electronically adjustable modes for varying loads. You can select (1) Rider, (2) Rider with loaded bags, (3) Rider and passenger, and (4) Rider and passenger with loaded bags. You won’t have to adjust the suspension manually, and you’ll always get a great ride.

ELECTRONICS

ADVANCED METERS

The Gold Wing’s cockpit meters are information central. In addition to the basics like vehicle and engine speed, loading configuration, ride mode, fuel level, engine temperature and dual tripmeters, you can also monitor outside air temperature, cruise control speed, heater levels, and even selected apps linked through Apple CarPlay on an iPhone® or Android Auto on an Android phone.

Available as an optional feature, HomeLink® lets you integrate your new Gold Wing with devices in your home. A typical example: you can open your home’s garage door without any dedicated controller—just touch a switch on your bike’s center console. No more fumbling, and no hassle.

TIRE PRESSURE MONITORING SYSTEM (TPMS)

Correct tire inflation is a necessity for safe, economical motorcycling. And it’s especially critical with a touring bike, because of the varying loads. The Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) automatically warns you of low tire pressure on all Gold Wing models. On Gold Wing Tour models, including a dashboard readout of the actual front and rear pressure in PSI is a premium touch.

Apple CarPlay COMPATIBILITY

A first for the motorcycle industry! Apple’s CarPlay*1 seamlessly integrates your iPhone®*1 into your new Gold Wing. That means you can use your iPhone® to access Apple Maps®, Apple Music®, and other services easily. You’ll have access to weather, playlists and telephone numbers while aboard. Available  Bluetooth ®*2-enabled wireless headsets let you communicate more easily than ever. And best of all, with more apps available every day, Apple CarPlay*1 keeps your bike’s technology and convenience on the cutting edge. *1 Apple CarPlay and iPhone are the trademarks of Apple Inc. *2 For using Apple CarPlay, connection to a commercially available  Bluetooth  headset is necessary. See owner’s manual for  Bluetooth  headset requirements.

ANDROID AUTO COMPATIBILITY

Do you prefer an Android phone? We have you covered! The 2023 Gold Wing fully integrates with your phone, thanks to Android Auto. That means you can connect your Android phone to your Gold Wing to access Google Assistant, and to use navigation tools like Google Maps, Waze, and more. Plus, you’ll have access to weather, playlists, music-streaming services and telephone numbers. Available  Bluetooth *-compatible headsets let you communicate easily too.

*For using Android Auto, connection to a commercially available  Bluetooth  headset is necessary. Please refer to your  Bluetooth  headset manufacturer for optimal audio settings for use with Android Auto.

Every Gold Wing and Gold Wing Tour is equipped with a big, bright, seven-inch full-color TFT LCD screen to display routes and other navigation information. Plus, since it’s equipped with a gyrocompass, the system even functions inside a tunnel. Independent of the Apple CarPlay or Android Auto feature, it works with or without your phone.

VEHICLE SETTINGS

Your new Gold Wing is packed with smart rider aids. A glance at the dash keeps you informed of things like ride mode (Tour, Sport, Rain, Econ), rear suspension preload settings (solo, with passenger, loaded, unloaded on Tour models), tire pressure* and much more.

*Depending on chosen model.

Your new Gold Wing’s audio system is an excellent example of state-of-the-art electronic technology. In addition to listening to music, with an available  Bluetooth * headset you can make or answer phone calls without taking off your helmet. In addition to a standard USB connector, options include a separate passenger audio control switch, a high-output amplifier and speakers, Sirius XM® satellite radio, a CB radio, and more. Plus, there’s a second USB connector in the left saddlebag of all Gold Wing models.

*See owner’s manual for  Bluetooth  headset requirements.

55-WATT SPEAKERS

Gold Wings have always offered excellent sound systems, but our current speakers have a high 55-watt rating, and we’ve optimized both the equalizer settings and automatic volume adjustment, so you’ll get a sound that’s a little richer and more pleasing to the ears.

ENGINEERING

THROTTLE BY WIRE

The 2023 Gold Wing’s throttle-by-wire system enables features like the bike’s four ride modes and our exclusive Honda Selectable Torque Control (HSTC), available on all Gold Wing models for 2023.

HILL START ASSIST

Both the Gold Wing and Gold Wing Tour models feature Hill Start Assist (HSA). This feature momentarily holds your motorcycle’s position on inclines after you’ve released the brakes and before you apply the throttle, eliminating any roll-back drama. It’s a great convenience when starting from a stop on a hill.

Your new Gold Wing features an electronic smart key. When the key is in close proximity (say, in your jacket pocket), you can just hop on, press a button, and ride off. An “answer back” feature lets you find your bike in the dark or in crowded rally parking.

INTEGRATED STARTER GENERATOR (ISG)

Most cars and motorcycles have separate starters and alternators. Not your new Gold Wing. We’ve combined the starter and alternator into one assembly that’s light and compact. It’s part of the Gold Wing’s overall weight-savings program, and you’ll hear the difference the first time you press the start button.

Gold Wing DCT models offer an exclusive low-speed reverse that uses engine power, while the Gold Wing Tour with manual transmission offers a unique electric reverse. Both systems make it easy to maneuver your bike out of a parking space, especially if you need to roll back up a slight hill.

Honda SELECTABLE TORQUE CONTROL (HSTC)

On our Gold Wing Tour models, Honda Selectable Torque Control (HSTC) constantly monitors your bike’s rear-wheel speed, and adjusts torque instantly. It’s a great feature when riding in the rain, on sandy, gritty roads, over wet leaves, or anywhere else where surface conditions can compromise traction.

LED LIGHTING

All 2023 Gold Wing models feature a complete LED lighting package. The headlights, the taillights, and every bit of instrumentation is LED. LEDs not only last longer, but they’re also lighter and run cooler.

NANO-TECH PAINT

Even the Gold Wing’s paint is high tech, using BASF’s nano technology. The darks look darker, and the lights look brighter. The paint itself has a luxurious wet look. The Gold Wing DCT model is available in a new Matte Gray this year. The Gold Wing Tour and Tour DCT come in two colors (Candy Ardent Red and Black). The Gold Wing Tour Airbag DCT model is available in Candy Ardent Red.

The Gold Wing pioneered the concept of a motorcycle airbag, and the 2023 Gold Wing continues to lead the way. Available on our Tour Airbag DCT model, it goes that extra mile towards increased rider safety. You also get an exclusive Candy Ardent Red paint scheme.

STANDARD ON: GOLD WING TOUR AIRBAG DCT

TURN SIGNALS

You’ll notice that the Gold Wing’s front turn signals are integrated into the rearview mirrors, and use three LEDs each. The rear LED turn signals are built into the tail- and brake-light assembly for a clean, integrated look. Best of all, they’re self-cancelling.

OPTIONAL LIGHTS

Lighten up! Optional accessory LED lighting for your Gold Wing includes an additional LED rear brake light that is integrated into the available rear chrome trunk rack, and LED lights for inside the trunk that automatically illuminate when the trunk is opened. There’s even available LED “Entry Lighting” that illuminate the outside of the bike.

COMFORT AND CARGO

LARGER TRUNK

The Gold Wing’s trunk holds 61 liters. That means in most cases you can get two full-face helmets in there. Combined, the trunk and saddlebags give you 121 liters of storage, plenty to hold what you need for a weekend’s travels. Available accessories include an auto-on interior light, a luggage rack, and more.

ELECTRIC WINDSCREEN

You’ll notice a couple of things about the Gold Wing’s windscreen. First, it’s electrically controlled, moving both up and down over a 4.9-inch range for the Gold Wing Tour as well as changing its angle as it raises and lowers. Plus, it automatically remembers the last setting. Because you sit closer to the windscreen, it has a narrower, lower, more sporting profile, yet still offers excellent protection.

Back in the 1980s, the Gold Wing was the first bike to introduce full-coverage fairings as original equipment, and this latest one is one of our best. It offers excellent wind and weather protection, yet is trimmer and more aerodynamic than in previous generation models. It also flows more air through refined ducting, helping keep you cooler on hot summer days.

RIDER/LOCATION

The shorter engine and innovative front suspension let us move the rider farther forward, enhancing the bike’s handling and making you feel more connected to the motorcycle’s steering axis.

INTEGRATED PASSENGER GRAB HANDLES

Once a passenger has ridden on a Gold Wing, there’s no going back. Functional design touches like the integrated passenger grab handles help make your copilot’s riding experience an absolute pleasure, especially on longer rides.

HUMAN MACHINE INTERFACE (HMI)

Ever have to scroll through some abstract menu to access a feature on your electronic device? You’ll find plenty of simple, dedicated switches and controls on your Gold Wing’s handlebars, ergonomically placed, which give you simple, intuitive control inputs that zero out frustration. There is also a centralized control knob in the console similar to modern autos.

RIDER/PASSENGER SEATING

Our Gold Wing Tour models feature seats with a custom-feel suede-like cover. The rider on every Gold Wing model can enjoy an optional backrest, and on our Gold Wing models without a trunk, there’s also an optional backrest for the passenger.

NEW PASSENGER BACKREST

We changed up the angle of the passenger backrest on our Tour models in 2021 (from 17 degrees to 24.5 degrees), increased its height, and added more cushion. It’s always been a great seat, but now it’s like your favorite easy chair at home!

All 2023 Gold Wings feature integrated saddlebags, designed to hold enough for most weekend trips. The bags open electronically with the push of a button, and lock and unlock remotely with the smart key. They’re hydraulically damped for smooth operation too.

FUNCTIONAL STYLING

Sometimes less is more, at least when it comes to motorcycles. We’ve noted that the Gold Wing is lighter, more responsive and more athletic than in previous generations. That goes for its styling as well. While the bodywork still offers excellent weather protection, it’s crisper now, exposing a little more of the engine and chassis. It’s definitely not your grandfather’s touring bike.

OVER 50 ACCESSORIES

Gold Wing riders are incredibly engaged when it comes to accessorizing their motorcycles. And we have you covered. We have over 50 accessories available that look right, fit right, and are built to Honda’s high standards. Time to make that new bike yours and yours alone!

HEATED GRIPS

Part of riding a bike is enjoying the elements. But nobody likes being cold. That’s why every 2023 Gold Wing comes equipped with electric heated grips as standard equipment.

HEATED SEATS

Now we’re talking about riding in the lap of luxury (no pun intended). In addition to heated grips, every Gold Wing Tour model also comes with heated seats for both you and your passenger.

2018 Honda Gold Wing review | The last word in luxurious motorcycle touring

2021 Honda Goldwing

  • More luggage space
  • Extra pillion comfort
  • Louder stereo

At a glance

Overall rating.

Usually, the new model is a 10% improvement or less, but the new Honda Gold Wing touring motorcycle is light years ahead of the old model, with significantly improved handling, ease-of-use, and fun. The level of comfort, specification and smoothness is class-leading. The only down side is the price; almost £33,000 in top spec DCT Tour guise (correct as of 2024), which is considerably more than the competition.

If cost is a consideration for you though, the new base version (£25,599 in 2024) is arguably better still. Its lighter looks and subtle connection to the surroundings from the smaller screen encourage you to get stuck in on open roads.

Yes, it’s ruddy big and there’s a limit to what you can get away with, but that limit is higher than you think. Crucially, however, it still overflows with high-comfort Honda-ness. There’s still nothing quite like a Wing.

As of 2024, the Gold Wing is only available in base DCT and DCT Tour models - with no manual alternative. If you want to change your own gears on your Gold Wing, you'll have to opt for the 2023 version.

Honda Goldwing has been updated for 2021

Ride quality & brakes

The chassis is completely new, too. The twin-spar frame is 2kg lighter and for the first time in Honda’s history features a double-wishbone front suspension unit. The front is controlled by a single shock, rather than conventional forks. There’s a conventional Showa single shock on the rear, both are controlled electronically but are not semi-active.

Through the bends the new Honda shone and showed how poor the old bike was by modern standards. The new six-piston linked brakes are eye-poppingly strong. Considering they’re stopping 378kg, they’re really impressive, the big Goldwing remains stable and the ABS isn’t too intrusive. Some might not like the linked brakes are very effective on the big Wing.

Once away from the motorway the difference between the modes are more noticeable. There’s less sag and wallowing in the Sports mode. Even in the soft Touring mode the handling is impressive and far superior to the old model. The big Wing has lost a huge amount of weight and is now a bike again. The old bike was a comfortable method of getting from A to B, but now it’s actually a fun bike, which can be used and enjoyed.

Unexpected abilities from the standard machine

Riding the standard Honda Gold Wing

Yes, you’re aware this bike weighs 365kg (that’s 90kg more than a BMW R1250RT) and is as long as a canal boat. It’s no CBR650R . Yet the 1800 turns, holds lines and deals with spirited use with unprecedented ease.

With another 11 kilos lopped off compared to the Tour, the way the chassis flows down a fast, rolling A-road is glorious. The double-wishbone front end separates braking, suspension and steering forces, allowing full use of the strong front stoppers over a rippled surface without affecting the bike’s poise or ability to turn-in.

With weight carried low, it’s super-stable too. Ride quality in Tour mode is high, though with a definite sense of control, it’s the opposite of mushy. Switch to Sport and things become surprisingly... well, sporty.

2021 changes for Honda Goldwing

2021 Honda Goldwing side profile riding shot

Its huge pillion perch looks armchair-comfy, but when we tested the ’18 model on the MCN250 with MCN’s Office Manager, Alison Silcox along for the ride, it wasn’t the case and a few hours sat bolt upright took its toll on her lower back.

For 2021 the passenger backrest is set at a more relaxed 23-degree, rather than 16-degree recline. We used the ‘21 Wing as a camera bike in London recently with a photographer on the back and his only qualm was the beginnings of a sore bum after four hours, but no back pain. Both seats are now trimmed with synthetic leather/suede.

Capacity has remained the same at 1833cc, but that is where the similarities end – it’s a completely new bike. There hasn’t been a huge hike in power, which some had expected. Instead it’s more compact, lighter and smoother than ever. In total 48kg has been saved from the bike and the engine alone is 6.2kg lighter. Just removing the old starter motor in favour of an Integrated Starter Generator system (ISG) saved 2.4kg.

The new engine is available as either a conventional 6-speed manual or 7-speed DCT (Dual Clutch Transmission), which automatically changes gear or gives you the option to change gear electronically without a clutch.

The engine in the 2021 Honda Goldwing

The Wing’s 125bhp 1833cc motor and chassis remain untouched for 2021, so you can still waft from A to B in a cocoon of quietness and high-speed luxury.

The steering is nicely weighted, brakes are strong it can easily turn from lazy Lincoln Continental, purring at 2200rpm at motorway speeds to a frothing flat six-pot Porsche 911 when the mood takes you.

It isn’t as big as it looks in pictures, but there’s no getting away from the Gold Wing’s huge bulk, which isn’t so much a problem on the move, but you feel every one of its 383kgs at low speed and filtering.

Reliability & build quality

This is Honda’s flagship model and quality is impressive. The Goldwing’s reliability is legendary, the motor is unstressed and should be capable of huge mileage.

Our Honda Goldwing owners' reviews show absolutely nothing concerning about reliability. Honda's build quality shines through. One of the owners does complain that the electronic pannier release button failed on his bike, so make sure you give them a go if you're buying a used example.

2021 model update

Extra luggage space and pillion comfort for the 2021 model are welcome additions to the new Honda, as is its louder stereo is an improvement, too, although it’s more aimed at lower speed highway cruising in the States than the faster motorways here.

Elsewhere it’s still the same Goldwing we’ve come to know and love - outrageously OTT, unapologetically expensive, delightfully built, finished and loaded with toys. Some of the gadgets aren’t at the forefront of tech anymore, but still work beautifully. But beneath the 'Wing’s glitz and glamour it’s still a magnificent tourer, that’s surprisingly sporty and keeps getting better the longer you ride.

Honda Goldwing ignition switch

Value vs rivals

There is no hiding the fact the new Goldwing is expensive, at just shy of £30,000 it’s considerably more than its closest competition. Even if you tick every accessory possible BMW’s six-cylinder K1600GT still comes in at under £25,000 and has more top-end power. It’ll be interesting to see how it compares when we run them back-to-back.

That said, cheaper versions of the 'Wing are available, with the £22,299 standard version making arguably more financial sense than the full fat tourer.

2021 Honda Goldwing headlight

Although you lose the 50-litre top box, you still get 30-litre side panniers, alongside the same 1833cc engine, cast aluminium frame and electronic aids like traction control. The standard bike gets no preload adjustment or centrestand though.

Where do we start, the list is huge. One of the criticisms of DCT is the lack of rider control at slow speeds, due to the lack of clutch. However, Honda have created a smart solution with a new ‘Walking mode’ that limits speeds to 1.1mph at the touch of a button. As with the old Wing, reverse comes as standard, and is easily controlled by the plus and minus buttons on the left bar.

The large screen is finally electronically adjustable, which previous Wing owners were praying for. There’s also the option of increasing the airflow to the rider and pillion by manually opening a small flap below the screen.

The bodywork and luggage are all new. Each pannier carries 30 litres of kit whereas the rear top case holds 50 litres. All the compartments can be locked via the keyless ignition and feature hydraulic dampers, which allow them to open and close with smooth, effortless ease. There are two further compartments up front; one centrally located, and the other on the right side. The old model’s rear pillion compartments don’t feature.

2021 Honda Goldwing panier

The cruise control via the fly-by-wire throttle can be set and adjusted on the move. Simply set your speed, adjust the screen to your required height, sit back in comfort and listen to your tunes via the four speakers. The clarity is impressive and you don’t need to have the volume cranked to the maximum at speed. The small compartment located just below the fuel cap is the perfect size for an iPhone or iPod, and comes with a USB connection.

The changeable rider modes are easy to select, and change the suspension, engine characteristics and rider aids. The changeable modes dramatically change the DCT. For example, in Sports mode the gears are held for longer and the system quickly and automatically cogs down a few gears if rapid acceleration is required. It’s the opposite in the Economical mode, it short-shifts to top gear and almost refuses to knock back a gear during aggressive throttle openings.

Apple Car Play is available for the first time, sat-nav comes as standard as does a heated seat and grips, even the pillion gets a heated seat.

Smaller screen for standard bike

The electric screen is controlled from the left switchgear and is around 40% smaller than on the Tour. It’s still big enough to almost completely remove wind noise at 70mph and generates a little negative back pressure when fully up, so you can swan about with your visor up.

What’s better with this bike is that there’s a bit of breeze in the fully-down position, which keeps the Wing feeling like a motorbike, without introducing buffeting. There’s also a pop-up spoiler to tailor airflow on top of the dash.

For its 2018 update the Goldwing lost 37 litres of luggage space, which seemed like a backwards step, but some of it returns. For 2021 you’ll be able to carry a bigger kitchen sink now that the top box is bigger - increased from 50 litres to 61 litres, thanks to a taller lid.

The capacious compartment is easily big enough to hold two full size crash helmets, plus change and overall, there’s 121 litres of space for your trips away. Central locked, colour-coded pannier doors and top box lid have a quality, weighty feel and open via soft touch buttons when Honda’s smart-key is close by.

Honda Goldwing accessories: changes for 2021

2021 Honda Goldwing clocks

The 2021 Goldwing enjoys the same creature comforts as the 2018 model. In full ‘Tour DCT’ spec it has seven semi-active gears, a reverse and as well as its new pumped-up stereo, it comes with everything from heated seats to traction control, ABS, rider modes, electronically adjustable suspension, LEDs, sat nav, an electric screen and a buttery-smooth cruise control system, although it’s controlled on the right switchgear where it’s tricky to get to.

The cruise isn’t radar controlled, but it’s none the worse for it and the colour 7in colour dash, flanked by an analogue speedo and tacho is useful but lacks the sophistication and clarity of the most modern displays from BMW and Ducati.

For 2022 the Goldwings get new paintjobs. The Tour will be available in metallic black, finished off with a new blacked out engine, while the DCT/Airbag version of the Goldwing Tour will now feature a vibrant metallic blue scheme as well as metallic white offering. The DCT-only GL1800 Goldwing will now be available in a smart new metallic blue, too.

Owners' reviews for the HONDA GL1800 GOLDWING (2018 - on)

4 owners have reviewed their HONDA GL1800 GOLDWING (2018 - on) and rated it in a number of areas. Read what they have to say and what they like and dislike about the bike below.

Review your HONDA GL1800 GOLDWING (2018 - on)

The question posed here is: Would you recommend this bike to a friend? And the truthful answer is, I don't know. As most other reviewers note, the colossal weight of the Wing disappears the moment you're on the move, and the reason for this is obvious if you stand back and admire its profile: all the weightier components of the drivetrain, right down to the fuel tank, have been relocated inline with the wheel hubs. It's a clever trick that means the weight is only obvious when heaving it from the side stand, but it does mean there's literally no ground clearance. And while it's hard to ignore the amazing plushness of the ride, the fabulous weather protection, and the feeling you could stay on it for a month without stopping, having sold mine I simply don't miss it. Despite being superbly and cleverly engineered - it is a docile whale that's nowhere near the handful you think it might be - it's still half a tonne of machinery balanced between your legs and always felt more car than motorbike, right down to the automatic gearbox. It's barely 100mm shorter than a Smart EQ ForTwo. You need to test ride it.

Like riding a small car. The wishbone-style front suspension and sheer heft of the Honda allows the suspension to eat bumps and swallow up poor road surfaces without transmitting anything of real consequence to the rider. On my commute there are several sections of road and several sharp humps in the tarmac which, on lighter bikes, causes a squirm or my rear end to leave the seat (and cusses to leave my mouth). Smothering these sort of deviations was a welcome experience, but I remain unsure how I feel about all imperfection being similarly anaesthetised. For me it made GL1800 ownership a slightly, well, remote experience. Though I suspect this is precisely what most Wing riders want.

Smooth. Very rapid. DCT in Sport means you can pin the throttle and hit 60mph without any fuss between 3 and 4 seconds later. Sport simply doesn't suit the demeanour of the bike though.

The push-button pannier release is a complete and total nonsense and I wouldn't trust any similar mechanism even if it were tucked away out of the elements. The offside failed on mine, requiring all manner of faffing about to get at the contents manually. I presume the reason Honda opted for electric rather than mechanical locks is to save space, because the panniers are far too small to be useful. Literally every time I wanted to put something in them, I realised it was easier to stuff whatever it was into my rucksack instead. I do understand the horror of existing Wing owners realising just how much stowage space Honda sacrificed on this newer model. Mine was the bagger meaning I didn't even enjoy the luxury of the separate trunk space.

It's a large engine with an unexpectedly large number of cylinders and let's be honest, the fuel economy isn't special.

Two things: I'm still unsold on DCT, because of low speed nervousness thanks to surging between gears 1 and 2 (which Honda supposedly addressed in a later update), and I hated the clock layout. From reading forums I'm not alone. New bikes and most new cars are shifting to a digital MPH readout and yet Honda, for reasons I cannot fathom, doesn't even provide a configuration option to show your speed in the central LED panel. Go and have a look at the Wing's dash: the analogue clocks are set an entire foot apart from each other, meaning to process information from both while riding requires you to turn your head. It's completely silly. Yes, the dials look nice when sat still, but on the move you realise how ergonomically dire the setup is.

Buying experience: I have never once had a negative experience with any Honda dealer and Thunder Road, who supplied my bike, were no exception.

Version: DCT Tour

Annual servicing cost: £200

Dynamics are excellent, difficult to believe that it’s nearly 1/2 ton in weight because it rides so well. Technology is about as good as it gets. Draws more attention than any bike I’ve ever ridden, can be annoying sometimes when in garages etc luggage space for such a big machine is disappointing, creep mode for reverse and forwards is genius and makes moving it around easy.

Brakes are simply stunning, stopping without any drama and the bike 100% stable. Ride quality is exactly what it should be for this type of motorcycle giving super smooth comfort for rider and pillion

The magic starts as soon as it’s started sounding like a super smooth American muscle car, then it produces effortless super smooth power never feeling strained whatever the demands of the throttle. Fuel consumption considering its 1.8 litre 6 cylinders carrying 1/2 ton is pretty good giving about 45mpg or so on average

The tyre pressure sensors are overly sensitive and will trigger if the pressures are only marginally down.

It’s NOT cheap, major service is from £800 intermediate is £200 or so. Insurance is expensive too

It’s VERY highly spec’s as standard

Buying experience: Purchased from C J Ball as secondhand having just over 1000 miles on it, great service and very friendly dealership , no pressure, very obliging and knowledgeable on the machine. Would totally recommend C J Ball and as they are an official Honda Goldwing dealer they know their stuff

Version: dct air bag

Annual servicing cost: £270

BY SOME MARGIN, THIS IS THE EASYEST, SMOOTHEST, HANDLING BIKE I HAVE OWNED, IT RIDES THE BUMPY BRITISH ROADS BETTER THAN ANYTHING ELSE I HAVE OWNED OR RIDDEN.THE HANDLING IS SO CONFIDENCE INSPIRING THAT YOU CAN WEAR THROUGH NOT JUST THE HERO BLOBS BUT THE FOOT PEGS AS WELL WITHOUT A NERVOUS MOMENT.AS YOU MAY HAVE GUESSED I LOVE THIS BIKE ! THE ONLY SLIGHT NEGATIVE MAY BE THE MASS OF TECHNOLOGY (APPLE CAR PLAY ETC) WHICH CAN BE A BIT FRUSTRATING AT TIMES BUT GENERALY WORKS IN THE END, AND MAYBE THE SHEAR SIZE OF THE BIKE,WHICH AFTER A FEW THOUSAND MILES HAS BECOME SO NORMAL I DONT NOTICE IT ANYMORE.(I ONLY WEIGH 91/2 STONE) I WOULD THINK ANYONE BUYING THIS MODEL COULD NOT BE OTHER THAN IMPRESSED WITH THIS BIKE, THOUROULY RECOMMENDED.

THE BIKE IS BEST AT LONG JOURNIES OF COURSE, BUT ALSO A GREAT ALL ROUNDER,MAYBE NOT SO GOOD FOR YOUR PAPEROUND.

SMOOOOOOOOOOTH, AND SURPISINGLY FAST

NO ISSUES SO FAR

I PERSONALLY THINK CHARGING ME £270+ POUNDS FOR A OIL CHANGE IS A BIT ECCESSIVE CONSIDERING THE TIME AND WORK INVOLVED.

BEST FEATURE HAS TO BE THE AUTO GEARBOX,FAUTLESS. WOULD RECOMMEND THE BACKREST FOR EXTRA COMFORT, AND THE FOG LIGHTS FOR MAKING YOU MORE VISIBLE TO OTHERS.

Buying experience: BROUGHT THE BIKE FROM A DEALER,PAID THE ASKING PRICE £24995 BUT WAS OFFERED MUCH HIGHER PX VALUE ON MY BMW RT WHICH MADE IT THE BEST DEAL.

Version: Dct airbag

I would have given 5 stars but for the fact that the hill start assist is not 100%. It initialise and holds the bike for approx 5 seconds and then releases. Would be great if it holds for a long as necessary. Honda upgraded the speakers on the 2021 but I find they are not powerful enough at 45 watts per speaker. I cannot hear my music at over 90 mph. It would have been great if Honda had made the panniers deeper.

I find that I get a little tired after riding for 4 hrs or so

Absolutely 1st class engine and gearbox

I cannot comment on this as the bike is 2 months old

The drivers backrest works great. I like the Honda luggage rack with built in high rise running/brake & indicator lights.

Buying experience: The advertiser’s price was £31,690. For that it was delivered (a round trip was 300 miles), 6 months road tax and a £500 buying incentive was given.

I always prefer the simple throttle lock over the complicated and troublesome electronic cruise that the 2015-16 have.
Here is another picture
I don't think it'll work on Heli bars w/ the Kury grip...……………….. will it?
Had one of those on every bike I've owned since 83. Simple and effective. Makes scratchin' that right butt cheek so much easier.
Originally Posted by Joflewbyu2 I always prefer the simple throttle lock over the complicated and troublesome electronic cruise that the 2015-16 have. Just out of curiosity, why do you say "the complicated and troublesome electronic cruise that the 2015-16 have"? I have 41K on my 2015 with thousands of those miles with the cruise control on and find it totally reliable, just as in any car I've owned. The Goldwings have had cruise for over 15 years with excellent reliability and very few failures.
Amen to that! Best feature I ever got on my bike. There is nothing complicated about it. Like you said, just like a car. I own a VTX 1800F and I installed the throttle lock and it only works on flat terrain, and it really does not maintain the speed needing constant adjustment.
I think he means installing it if you don't have it can be "complicated & troublesome" not to mention costly. I don't think the '13 & '14's had cruise available, I might be wrong.
You are right they did not offer it in 13 and 14. You can buy a kit to install it. It is a bit pricey, but works very well. Not that hard to install if you take your time and instructions are well done and complete from start to finish.
Does it work with heated grips?
Former owner of a 99 Valkyrie for 15 years.
Of course it works with heated grips. That's how the Deluxe comes.

honda gold wing cruise control

Why The 2024 Honda Gold Wing Offers The Ultimate Luxurious Touring Experience

  • The Honda Gold Wing has evolved from its "old man's bike" reputation, offering unmatched comfort and technology for all riders.
  • With a powerful 1,833cc engine and innovative features like Cruise Control and DCT transmission, the Gold Wing stands out in the touring market.
  • Despite its hefty weight, the Gold Wing excels in reliability, luxury, and performance, making it a top choice for those seeking a premium touring experience.

The consensus is that the Honda Gold Wing is an old man’s motorcycle. But that’s wrong on so many levels. That may have been the case in its early years, but it has come a long way since Honda's 1974 GL1000. Not many motorcycle companies can boast of a model that has been in production for 50 years, although the model was discontinued in Japan in 2023.

In 2024, the Wing continues to stay on sale in North America, signaling a continuation of its legendary legacy. Last year, Honda did mention the Gold Wing would be available in five trims and though the website shows only two, it does allow you to customize. Taking the Gold Wing Tour Airbag DCT model into account, and further demarcating the base model and its options, it makes five trims – the base Gold Wing in Manual or DCT, the Gold Wing Tour with six-speed or DCT, and the Gold Wing Tour Airbag DCT. Let's check out why it's an unmatched option today.

To give you the most up-to-date and accurate information possible, the data used to compile this article was sourced from Honda.

How The BMW K1 Transformed The Landscape Of Sport-Touring Bikes

Mechanical prowess.

The Gold Wing’s horizontally opposed 1,833cc six-cylinder engine is well known for its smoothness and power. The design is over 13 pounds lighter than previous generations and eight pounds less in DCT trims. The high-strength aluminum cylinder sleeves help reduce weight and increase cooling efficiency, while the 73 mm cylinder bore (as well as the short high-strength crankshaft) helps reduce the engine length, making it more compact. The engine uses a four-valve, Unicam cylinder head design that improves performance and power, and also contributes to the engine’s weight reduction from its previous generation. This four-valve-per-cylinder design plays a big part in the Gold Wing’s superior fuel efficiency, too.

Since the mill is mechanically unmatched in the industry, Honda's left things mostly unchanged for 2024. This year's updates are limited specifically to cosmetic enhancements, particularly new color options. Its last substantial overhaul came in 2018, when Honda threw upgrades to the engine, the addition of a double wishbone suspension, improvements in the suspension, electronics, audio, rider conveniences, and weight reduction measures, Since then, the Gold Wing has remained relatively unchanged in terms of mechanical modifications, but the revisions broadened the Gold Wing's appeal significantly. Last year also saw a navigation update available for download.

Key Highlights

  • Latest generation all-aluminum frame is significantly lighter and more compact than previous editions
  • State-of-the-art die-casting allows Honda to fine-tune chassis rigidity, giving both a smooth ride and precise handling.
  • The Gold Wing's revolutionary 7-speed Automatic DCT shifts are faster and smoother, and the overdrive seventh gear is perfect for highway cruising.
  • You may think it's just for cosmetics, but the Gold Wings twin-wall exhaust design keeps things cooler as compared to a single-wall design.

Engine Specifications

Crazy good features.

On the equipment front, the Gold Wing’s speed can be set via Cruise Control, thanks to the fly-by-wire-throttle that can be adjusted while on the move. Rider modes are easy to access, allowing changes in engine characteristics, suspension, and rider aids. In full Tour DCT mode, it has seven semi-active gears, a reverse, and the 1.1 miles per hour “Walking mode” that can be accessed at the touch of a button. The low-speed reverse gear on the Tour DCT model uses engine power, while the Gold Wing Tour with manual transmission offers a unique electric reverse. Both systems make it easy to maneuver the motorcycle out of a parking space, especially if you need to roll back up an incline.

Dual-Cutch Transmission (DCT)

Other than that, at higher speeds in Sports mode, the gears hold out longer, while during rapid deceleration, the automatic transmission downshifts a couple of gears quickly and without problems. Economy mode, though, is a different story, especially when on the throttle aggressively, the transmission will short-shift all the way to top gear, refusing to down-shift gears when it should be doing so. That's been done to promote fuel efficiency, of course. Unfortunately, the cruise control is not adaptive due to a lack of radar, which also means there’s no blind-spot detection. Although unquestionably reliable, an issue at slower speeds between first and second gears with DCT has been the lack of control due to the non-existence of a clutch lever, and taking its payload into account, it can be unnerving.

10 Motorcycles With The Most Advanced Suspension Systems

Integrated starter generator.

Honda has gone the distance by establishing an integrated starter generator. While most motorcycles have the parts separately located, Honda has combined the starter motor and generator into one compact component that directly leads to the Wing’s overall weight-savings - 5.3 pounds to be exact. The generator becomes the starter motor when the polarity is reversed. In addition to this, helical gears with teeth set at a specific angle to the gear axis are used in the hardware for reduced mechanical noise and vibration. Another convenient feature of the Gold Wing is the engine shutting off automatically after three seconds when in traffic. With the combined help of throttle-by-wire control and DCT, restarting is initiated smoothly and instantaneously when the rider turns the throttle.

Honda Pro Arm Swingarm

On the suspension front, Honda uses their proprietary single-sided aluminum Pro Arm swingarm design that houses the Gold Wing’s shaft drive. The swingarm links to the frame using a patented pivot structure that increases stiffness and reduces weight, leading to responsive handling and a smooth ride. The Wing Tour takes it to another level altogether , featuring suspension that can be electrically controlled via four adjustable modes for varying loads. Riders can select from Rider, Rider with loaded bags, Rider and Passenger, and Rider and Passenger with loaded luggage while the suspension automatically adjusts on the fly as you ride.

Reliability and Quality

The Wing is extremely comfortable, and it’s akin to owning a small car. It can eat up anything that’s thrown at it, munching up potholes and bumps, and you won’t feel a thing, thanks to its double wishbone suspension and ridiculous payload. Its innovative design changes the path the wheel travels through the suspension stroke and that lets both the engine and the rider and passenger move closer to the front wheel. The brakes are said to provide excellent stopping power every time, thanks to Honda’s ABS-linked braking system that comprises dual three-piston calipers at the front and a single three-piston caliper at the rear. They're mated to full-floating 296 mm and 316 mm rotors respectively.

The Gold Wing is well-engineered, but for those who are new to it, it is difficult to begin with. It may have lost quite a bit of weight from the previous generation, but it’s still heavy. Its 802 / 804-pound weight (depending on which trim you’re looking at) is obvious when taking it off the stand, and will take some time to get used to. We don’t recommend trying to lean the motorcycle over side-to-side once you have your leg over the seat – it’s a leviathan of a motorcycle and not a 300-pound entry-level offering.

Touring Luxury Reinvented

Despite its static mechanical configuration, the 2024 Gold Wing continues to offer an extensive array of touring-friendly features. Covering long distances is easier when the onboard entertainment system provides many options and Honda even upgraded the onboard speakers to 45 watts a couple of years ago. Across all trims (excluding manual), riders get a 7-inch TFT screen, navigation, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto integration, an adjustable electric windscreen, Smart Key operation, four riding modes, traction control , and Hill Start assistance.

The 7-inch display screen may not be up to the standards of a Ducati, Kawasaki, or BMW, but it gets the job done. It is flanked by an analog speedometer and tachometer, which is useful and looks nice, but why Honda hasn’t gone completely digital is anyone’s guess. The HomeLink Wireless Control System is optional, meanwhile.

Protecting the rider from the elements is Honda's screen. Electrically controlled, it moves both up and down over a distance of 4.9 inches, changes angle as it is raised and lowered, and also remembers the last setting it was set to. It offers excellent wind protection as the rider is now closer to the front wheel and therefore sits closer to the windscreen, which is narrower, lower, and has a more sporty profile than previous generations.

The Gold Wing wouldn't be complete without its storage facilities. For 2024, it features integrated saddlebags that can be opened electronically with the push of a button and be locked and unlocked remotely with the smart key. They’re also hydraulically damped for smooth operation. In the Tour version, the Wing gets the 61-liter top box with an integrated passenger backrest.

Harley-Davidson Road Glide Limited vs Honda Gold Wing

Strong price compared to american options.

Today, the Gold Wing Tour Airbag DCT commands an MSRP of $33,000, a modest $100 increase from the previous year. Meanwhile, the Gold Wing Tour and Tour DCT are priced at $28,700 and $29,700 respectively. As for the base model, it is available in a six-speed manual transmission or DCT at $24,700 and $25,700 respectively. At this price, the motorcycle is much cheaper than the likes of the Harley-Davidson CVO Road Glide or Indian Challenger Elite.

AIRBAG: The Gold Wing pioneered the concept of a motorcycle airbag, and the 2024 Gold Wing Tour continues to lead the way.

All in all, the Honda Gold Wing has remained mechanically unchanged since 2018, but you still get a bucket load of tech and an unmatched combination of comfort, technology, and refinement. Its 1,833cc flat-six engine is as smooth as butter as ever and promises riders an unforgettable experience. So if you’re in the market for the ultimate touring motorcycle that also offers sports capabilities, this is it!
