The 2024 eclipse may have come and gone, but it left plenty of people hungry for more astrotourism. And luckily, there are plenty of fantastic spots to stargaze across the United States, and HomeToGo has rounded up a few of the best destinations in its new Stargazing Index .

“Astrotourism has emerged as the defining travel trend of 2024 so far, with April’s total solar eclipse generating a notable uplift in demand. Leading up to the event, the search demand for vacation rentals in towns along the path of totality skyrocketed by 139 percent week-over-week on HomeToGo, with median nightly prices registering increases of 40 percent,” Eleanor Moody, a spokesperson and travel expert at HomeToGo shared in a statement provided to Travel + Leisure . “We predict that this piqued interest in celestial tourism will persist further into the year, and have curated HomeToGo’s 2024 Stargazing Index with a new wave of eager astro-travelers in mind.”

As Moody explained, the new index is designed to assist travelers in discovering all the darkest places to ensure the best view of the stars above.

In total, it found 24 Dark Sky communities across nine states, including California, Arizona, Texas, Indiana, Utah, Colorado, Illinois, Idaho, and Florida.

It then ranked them on five indicators, including an "under-the-radar score," which it gave based on their search volume (the lower the search volume the higher the score); an "affordability score" based on the median nightly price per person for a vacation rental on HomeToGo; an "availability score," based on the number of vacation rentals in each destination bookable on HomeToGo; a "clear sky score" based on the average number of clear days in each community; and a "solitude score," based on the size of each certified International Dark Sky Place and the area's population size. (For the latter, the lower the population density, the higher the score.)

After looking at all that data, it named Borrego Springs, California, the home of Anza-Borrego Desert State Park , to be the No. 1 astrotourism spot. "This small community is the only International Dark Sky Community in California," the findings noted. "Dedicated to protecting the night sky from light pollution, backyard stargazing parties are a daily occurrence. Visitors are invited to embrace the local natural and cultural wonders with the annual Night Fall Star Party, southern California’s prime opportunity to view the night sky with others."

It was joined by two Arizona locations: Fountain Hills at No. 2, followed by Flagstaff in third. Dripping Springs in Wimberley, Texas, and Cottonwood, Arizona, came in fourth and fifth, respectively.

Stargaze in these 7 best European spots for astrotourism

Lori Zaino

If you want to enjoy the starry night sky on your next vacation, consider visiting one of these top destinations in Europe for astrotourism. The continent is full of beautiful spots to admire the stars, included a number of Dark Sky certified spots (reserves, parks, and sanctuaries) as well as Starlight Tourism destinations that are protected spaces specifically for stargazing.

While any wide open space sans light pollution is often apt for viewing the terrestrial sky, here are some of the top TPG recommend destinations for an astrotourism vacation.

1. La Palma, Canary Islands, Spain

ideal star travel tourism

La Palma is known as one of Europe's best Starlight Tourism destinations, especially apt for stargazing thanks to its dry, high-altitude climate. The island, one of Spain's seven Canary Islands , is also considered a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. La Palma was one of the first spots in Spain to apply special laws which ensure the sky stays clear of not just light pollution, but also radio electrical and atmospheric pollution, including overuse of aviation routes.

With 16 special viewpoints, "miradores astronómicos," stargazers have plenty of spots to admire the sky. The most famous is the Roque de Los Muchachos observatory. Sitting at 8,000 feet above sea level, this observatory offers views of the stars from more than 13 different telescopes.

2. Alqueva, Portugal

ideal star travel tourism

Named the very first Starlight Tourism Destination in the world, Alqueva is located in the serene Alentejo region of Portugal , an area that should definitely be on your bucket list , especially if you'd like to escape the summer crowds of Algarve or Lisbon.

Visit the Dark Sky Observatory in the small village of Cumeada, or simply enjoy sky views from the wide-open spaces of the countryside. The region is known for its quaint rolling hills, delicious cuisine and up-and-coming wine scene.

It's hard to pick just one spot in Iceland for stargazing. The vast, natural landscape of the country is perfect for admiring the night sky, which includes those famed Northern Lights , of course. Just remember that summer is actually not the best time to spot them. Because the days are so long, and there's that midnight sun phenomenon where the sun barely sets around the summer solstice. September through April is the prime time to admire the aurora, and if you do head over in winter, bundle up!

For a celestial-inspired getaway, consider the Hotel Ranga in southern Iceland which has its very own observatory complete with some seriously cool telescopes. Ranga even gives guests snowsuits to stay warm while stargazing in the winter! Non-hotel guests can book observatory tours in advance.

4. Bodmin Moor, UK

ideal star travel tourism

With plenty of wild moorlands, the U.K.'s serene countryside areas have little light pollution where the night sky can thrive in all its glory. Bodmin Moor is one of these areas, part of the Cornwall Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It also happens to be a Dark Sky Landscape.

By day, you can hike, stroll, ride bikes or admire the unique rock formations and archaeological sites such as the Cheesewring that are mildly reminiscent of Stonehenge's sarsen stones. After taking in a gorgeous sunset, the night sky is full of bright, shining stars.

5. Zselickisfalud, Hungary

ideal star travel tourism

Zselickisfalud is home to Hungary 's famous Zselic Csillagpark, or the Zselic Starry Park. Ideal for all types of travelers, including families, the park features a planetarium, observatory and expansive, woodsy grounds for strolling beneath stars (or during the day, if you prefer).

The park holds Dark Sky Park status, and also offers guided tours and educational programs ideal for both adults and children. There are even special theme nights you can join in for. The park is especially inclusive to those with disabilities and is handicap-accessible.

6. Galloway, Scotland

ideal star travel tourism

While many of Scot land's far-flung isles are apt for viewing the Milky Way, Galloway Forest Park (one of the largest forests in the UK) is designated as a Dark Sky Park. It's even won the Gold Tier Park award, meaning its night sky conditions are truly special when it comes to viewing the glowing stars.

Amid the forest's 300-square-mile territory, visitors can view over 7,000 stars, as well as planets and even the Milky Way from the Observatory, the Visitor Centre or simply out in the park. You can also book tours and group sessions if you'd prefer a guided experience.

7. Pic du Midi, France

ideal star travel tourism

Admire the night sky from the Pyrénées at the Dark Sky Reserve Pic Du Midi in France . The protected area covers over 65% of the Hautes-Pyrénées, meaning the sky is pure and visible without light or electrical pollution.

One of the best ways to experience the area and sky is to spend the night at the hotel atop the mountains, arriving via cable car. The experience gives visitors special access to the Observatoire Midi-Pyrénées and the Charvin Dome with its iconic 400 mm Smith-Cassegrain telescope offering views of the galaxy that are up close and personal. The Pic du Midi hotel can only host 27 guests each night (with 12 double and three single rooms), so make sure to reserve this special experience in advance.

Bottom line

Even if you don't want to plan an entire trip dedicated to night sky viewing, you can still easily visit many of these spots during a trip filled with other activities. For example, Alqueva is just a couple hours drive away from the Algarve coast in Portugal, and there's plenty to do in the French Pyrénées besides stargazing. A night at Iceland's Hotel Ranga can easily be combined with a variety of other outdoor activities and exploring. Either way, make sure you take an evening to take in the night sky, too!

The Best Stargazing Travel Destinations For Outdoor Enthusiasts

Grab the telescope!

Stargazing hotel in Namibia

Traveling with a purpose is a pretty efficient means for making your trip memorable and fulfilling. And with the last two pandemic-fueled years causing a spike in outdoor adventure, it’s only natural that a holiday centered around something like stargazing has become increasingly more common. “The AAVSO has certainly seen an increase in interest surrounding stargazing,” Staff Astronomer Bert Pablo tells TZR. The American Association of Variable Stars Observers is an international non-profit with a mission to encourage scientific discovery through amateur astronomy (or what they refer to as variable star astronomy). “The 2020 shutdown made us all get creative and think about ways to stay entertained and pick up new and ‘COVID-safe’ activities such as stargazing.”

Naturally, a destination that lends itself to starry night skies will also be somewhere beautiful, making the decision to find these sorts of places all the more strong. A few things to consider: “If you can, the AAVSO recommends observing at national parks that are certified as dark skies parks. The National Park Service has a list of 27 national parks recognized by the International Dark Sky association for their dark night skies,” he says. If you're not in a dark sky area, all you need is a pair of binoculars or a small telescope. “The AAVSO recommends selecting a location where you can see the sky (dense trees will not help) and that’s far away from light pollution. Also, stargazing is more fun if the moon is not full, so it is recommended to pick days close to the new moon (the ‘invisible’ moon).”

Stargazing in North Carolina

Aside from the fact that a celestial-focused trip will result in a relaxing and awe-inducing experience, it also might even help out scientists (how often does that privilege come along?). “Astronomers rely on citizen scientists to gather variable star data because professional astronomers need data from different places on earth…to get the full picture of what's going on with these stars,” Pablo explains. “It's really difficult for an astronomer to be able to gather all the data they need for their work by themselves and information sharing is huge.”

Ahead, locations around the globe from the deserts of Africa to the islands of Hawaii that not only make for excellent travel destinations but also offer the opportunity to bask in the arresting night sky.

Stargazing hotel in Iceland

Visitors come to Iceland for the Northern Lights, yes, but an unspoiled night sky is an added benefit to making the journey to this ethereal part of the planet. At Hotel Rangá (where there are Northern Lights wake up calls!), astronomy lovers can visit the onsite state-of-the-art observatory where experts guide guests through constellations using high-spec telescopes that gaze through a roll-off roof.

An Astronomer’s Paradise, Chile May Be the Best Place on Earth to Enjoy a Starry Sky

Chile’s northern coast offers an ideal star-gazing environment with its lack of precipitation, clear skies and low-to-zero light pollution

Govert Schilling

The view through the eyepiece of the telescope is breathtaking. Like tiny diamonds on black velvet, countless sparkling stars float against a fathomless backdrop of empty space. “This is Omega Centauri,” says astronomer Alain Maury, who runs a popular tourist observatory just south of San Pedro de Atacama in northern Chile. “To the naked eye, it looks like a fuzzy star, but the telescope reveals its true nature: a huge, globular cluster of hundreds of thousands of stars, almost 16,000 light-years away.” I could take in this mesmerizing view for hours, but Maury’s other telescopes are trained at yet more cosmic wonders. There’s just too much to see.

Chile is an astronomer’s paradise. The country is justly famous for its lush valleys and snowcapped volcanoes, but its most striking scenery may be overhead. It is home to some of the finest places on Earth to enjoy the beauty of the starry sky. If there’s one country in the world that really deserves stellar status, it’s Chile.

If you live in a city, as I do, you probably don’t notice the night sky at all. Yes, the moon is visible at times, and maybe you can see a bright planet like Venus every now and then, but that’s about it. Most people are hard-pressed to recognize even the most familiar constellations, and they’ve never seen the Milky Way.

Not so in Chile. A narrow strip of land, 2,700 miles long and 217 miles at its widest point, Chile is tucked between the Andes Mountains to the east and the Pacific to the west. It stretches from the arid Atacama Desert in the north to the stark granite formations of the Torres del Paine National Park in the south. Large parts of Chile are sparsely populated, and light pollution from cities is hardly a problem. Moreover, the northern part of the country, because of its dry desert atmosphere, experiences more than 200 cloudless nights each year. Even more important to stargazers, Chile provides a clear view of the spectacular southern sky, which is largely invisible from countries north of the Equator.

Long before European astronomers first charted the unknown constellations below the Equator, just over 400 years ago, the indigenous people of Latin America knew the southern sky by heart. Sometimes their buildings and villages were aligned with the heavens, and they used the motions of the sun, the moon and the stars to keep track of time. Their night sky was so brilliant that they even could recognize “dark constellations”— pitch-black, sinuous dust clouds silhouetted against the silvery glow of the Milky Way. The Inca dark constellation of the llama is particularly conspicuous, as I noticed during my visit to Maury’s observatory.

It wasn’t until the mid-20th century that Western astronomers were drawn to Chile, in a quest for the best possible sites to build Southern Hemisphere observatories. Americans and Europeans alike explored the mountainous regions east of the port of La Serena, a few hundred miles north of the country’s capital, Santiago. Horseback expeditions lasting for many days—back then, there were no roads in this remote part of the world—took them to the summits of mountains like Cerro Tololo, Cerro La Silla and Cerro Las Campanas, where they set up their equipment to monitor humidity (or lack thereof), sky brightness and atmospheric transparency.

Before long, astronomers from American institutions and from the European Southern Observatory (ESO) erected observatories in the middle of nowhere. These outposts experienced their heyday in the 1970s and 1980s, but many of the telescopes are still up and running. European astronomers use the 3.6-meter (142 inches) telescope at the ESO’s La Silla Observatory to search for planets orbiting stars other than the sun. A dedicated 570-megapixel camera attached to the four-meter (157 inches) Blanco Telescope at Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory is charting dark matter and dark energy—two mysterious components of the universe that no one really understands.

ideal star travel tourism

If you’re star trekking in Chile, it’s good to know that most professional observatories are open for tourists one day each week, usually on Saturdays. Check out their schedules in advance to prevent disappointment—the drive from La Serena to La Silla may take almost two hours, and the curvy mountain roads can be treacherous. I once got my four-wheel-drive pickup truck in a spin while descending the gravel road from Las Campanas Observatory, a scary ride I hope never to repeat. Also, dress warm (it can be extremely windy on the summits), wear sunglasses and apply loads of sunblock.

Most professional observatories are open to visitors only during daytime hours. If you’re after a nighttime experience, the region east of La Serena—especially Valle de Elqui—is also home to a growing number of tourist observatories. The oldest is Mamalluca Observatory, some six miles northwest of the town of Vicuña, which opened in 1998. Here amateur astronomers give tours and introductory lectures, and guides point out the constellations and let visitors gaze at stars and planets through a number of small telescopes. Everyone can marvel at the view of star clusters and nebulae through the observatory’s 30-centimeter (12 inches) telescope.

You can look through a 63-centimeter (25 inches) telescope at Pangue Observatory, located ten miles south of Vicuña. At Pangue, astronomy aficionados and astrophotographers can set up their own equipment or lease the observatory’s instruments. Farther south, near the town of Andacollo, is Collowara Observatory, one of the newest tourist facilities in the region. And south of La Serena, on the Combarbalá plain, is Cruz del Sur Observatory, equipped with a number of powerful modern telescopes. Most observatories offer return trips to hotels in Pisco Elqui, Vicuña or Ovalle. Tours can be booked online or through travel agents in town.

I will never forget my first look at the Chilean night sky in May 1987. I was awed by the glorious constellations of Scorpio and the Southern Cross, the star-studded Milky Way with its many star clusters and nebulae, and of course the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds (two companion galaxies to our own Milky Way). Using today’s digital equipment, all of this can be captured on camera. Little wonder that professional astrophotographers have fallen in love with Chile. Some of them have the privilege of being designated photo ambassadors by ESO: They get nighttime access to observatories, and their work is promoted on the ESO website.

Every traveler to Chile interested in what’s beyond our home planet should visit—and photograph—the country’s Norte Grande region. It’s a surrealistic world of arid deserts, endless salt flats, colorful lagoons, geothermal activity and imposing volcanoes. East of the harbor town of Antofagasta, the Atacama Desert looks like a Martian landscape. In fact, this is where planetary scientists tested the early prototypes of their Mars rovers. The alien quality of the terrain makes you feel as if you’re hiking on a forbidding yet magnificent planet orbiting a distant star.

The 45-mile gravel road that took me through the rock-strewn Atacama from Ruta 5 (Chile’s main highway) to Cerro Paranal during my first visit there in 1998 has since been paved, providing much easier access to the ESO’s Very Large Telescope (VLT)—one of the foremost professional astronomical observatories in the world. Here, 8,645 feet above sea level, astronomers enjoy the serene spectacle of sunset above the Pacific Ocean before they switch on the four huge 8.2-meter (323 inches) Unit Telescopes, which are equipped with high-tech cameras and spectrographs that help them unravel the mysteries of the universe. And yes, even this temple of ground-based astronomy is open to visitors only on Saturdays.

A couple hundred miles to the northeast, tucked away between the Cordillera de la Sal mountain range and the Altiplano on the border with Argentina, is the oasis of San Pedro de Atacama. The region was inhabited thousands of years before the Spanish conquistadors built the first adobe houses and a Roman Catholic church in the 17th century—one of the oldest churches in Chile. Today San Pedro is a laid-back village, populated by backpackers and lazy dogs. It serves as the hub for exploratory trips to the surrounding natural wonders, from the nearby Valle de la Luna to the remote El Tatio geyser field.

Even though electric street lighting was introduced in San Pedro some ten years ago, it’s hard to miss the stars at night. A few steps into a dark side road will give you an unobstructed view of the heavens. Don’t be surprised, while you’re sipping a pisco sour in one of the many restaurants in town, to hear American, European or Japanese visitors talk about the big bang, the evolution of galaxies, or the formation of stars and planets. Over the last couple of years, San Pedro has become a second home for the astronomers of the international ALMA observatory.

ALMA (Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array) is the latest addition to Chile’s professional astronomical facilities. It’s one of the highest (altitude: 16,40 feet) and largest ground-based observatories in the world, with 66 antennas, most of them 12 meters (40 feet) across. The actual observatory, at the Llano de Chajnantor, some 30 miles southeast of San Pedro, is not open to tourists, but on weekends, trips are organized to ALMA’s Operations Support Facility (OSF), where you can visit the control room and take a look at antennas that have been brought down for maintenance. On clear days the OSF offers stunning views of nearby volcanoes and over the Salar de Atacama salt flat. While ALMA studies invisible radiation from distant stars and galaxies, San Pedro also affords many opportunities for old-fashioned stargazing. Some fancy resorts, like Alto Atacama and Explora, have their own private observatories where local guides take you on a tour of the heavens.

But if you really want to immerse yourself in the Chilean night sky, I strongly recommend a visit to SPACE, which stands for San Pedro de Atacama Celestial Explorations. Here, French astronomer and popularizer Maury and his Chilean wife, Alejandra, welcome you with hot chocolate, warm blankets and entertaining stories about the history of astronomy before they take you to their impressive telescope park.

It was here that I got my first look at the globular cluster Omega Centauri. I marveled at the clouds of Jupiter, the rings of Saturn, binary stars, softly glowing nebulae, glittering groups of newborn stars and distant galaxies. Suddenly the world beneath my feet turned into an inconspicuous speck of dust in a vast, incredibly beautiful universe. As the famous American astronomer Carl Sagan once said: “Astronomy is a humbling and character-building experience.” The Chilean night sky touches your deepest self.

For professional astronomers, Chile will remain the window to the universe for many years to come. On Cerro Las Campanas, plans are in place to build the Giant Magellan Telescope, featuring six 8.4-meter (330 inches) mirrors on a single mount. Meanwhile, the European Southern Observatory has chosen Cerro Armazonas, close to Paranal, as the site for the future European Extremely Large Telescope (E-ELT). This monster instrument—which would be the largest optical/near-infrared telescope ever built—will have a 39-meter (128 feet) mirror consisting of hundreds of individual hexagonal segments. It is expected to revolutionize astronomy, and it may be able to detect oxygen and methane—signs of potential life—in the atmospheres of Earthlike planets orbiting nearby stars.

In 2012 I drove the bumpy trail to the summit of Armazonas, and took a small stone for a souvenir. Two years later the mountaintop was flattened by dynamite to create a platform for the E-ELT. One day I hope to return, to see the giant European eye on the sky in its full glory. But well before the telescope’s “first light,” Chile will beckon me again, to witness the wonder of a total solar eclipse, both in July 2019 and in December 2020.

I have to admit I’m hooked. Hooked by the cosmos, as seen and experienced from the astronomical paradise of Chile. You’ll understand when you go there and see for yourself. Who knows, one day we may run into each other and enjoy the view together.

Spend Your Star-Studded Astrotourism Getaway at One of These 4 US Destinations

ideal star travel tourism

Astrotourism is basically the JOMO of wanderlusting vacations —there's very little to do beyond simply looking up and watching. Furthermore, it's on the up and up.  Airbnb even named astrotourism a bona fide trend earlier this year after seeing booking surges in accordance with celestial events, like the total solar eclipse in 2017 . (The platform reports that more than 50,000 Airbnb guests from 26 countries traveled to the United States to see the full eclipse).

But what even is it? Well, as its name suggests, astrotourism is rooted in all things astronomy and the stars; it's about gazing up and nerding out about the galaxies beyond us. You'd be right to point out that this just sounds like good old "stargazing,"  but the uptick in people dedicating their precious vacation days to chasing the best celestial sights rightfully calls for a new name.

While there are plenty of gold-star (had to) destinations for stargazing (hello, aurora borealis views from Iceland ), our own United States of America offers plenty of perfectly shiny locales for pausing and taking in the literally out-of-this-world views.

Might sound like good old "stargazing," but the uptick in people dedicating their precious vacation days to chasing the best celestial sights rightfully calls for a new name.

Ready to plan your own stargazing trip without having to dust off your passport? We've got you covered.

4 cities in the US perfect for an out-of-this-world astrotourism getaway.

astrotourism

1. Fairbanks, Alaska

Known as a must-visit city because of its viewing opportunities of the northern lights, Fairbanks is also a haven for both novice and expert star peepers. The key to catching the best sights in Alaska, however, is bundling up and visiting during the winter months when the skies are clearest  and darkest. Include a visit to Fairbanks Museum and Planetarium to soak up some star-powered knowledge.

{{post.sponsorText}}

2. Moab, Utah

Yet another dessert destination with peaks galore and natural wonders, Moab  boasts several designated Dark Sky Parks , per the International Dark-Sky Association , an organization that targets light pollution. So basically, expect to see everything .

Pick from viewing the stars at Dead Horse Point State Park , Arches National Park , or Canyonlands National Park for an unparalleled astronomical experience. Also, make sure to pack binoculars for your visit; if you’re lucky, you may even get a glimpse of Saturn’s rings .

astrotourism

3. Albuquerque, New Mexico

New Mexico as an entire state offers plenty of reasons worthy of planning a trip (think: brilliantly blue skies, stunning sunsets, unreal-looking rock formations ideal for long hikes ). But Albuquerque has a special draw: the stars, or rather being able to view them super clearly. The areas surrounding the city are known for having low light pollution, meaning less in your way when you gaze up at the sparkling orbs above.

Road trip a few hours outside Albuquerque proper to Chaco Canyon,  a national historical park of New Mexico  that's c lassified as an official Dark Sky Park  (read: nationally recognized awesome stargazing conditions).  And your daytime itinerary is covered, too with ancient ruins available for exploration.

4. Valentine, Nebraska

About a five-hour drive Northwest of Omaha sits Valentine, a city of fewer than 3,000 people, and about 27 miles Northeast of Valentine is the even more remote Merritt Reservoir Snake Campground, which hosts the annual weeklong  Nebraska Star Party . While it might be generally unusual to seek out a vacation spot that prides itself on being sparsely populated and poorly lit, it's kind of NSP's claim to fame.

During the event, sky observation is on the nightly schedule from dusk till dawn (obviously), but other programming—like canoeing and photo contests—is available for registered festival goers. And no sweat if you're new to astronomy and simply got roped into a summer road trip with buddies: There's a Beginners Field School that breaks down knowledge about the stars and how to view them best.  Intrigued? Mark your calendar for January 1, 2019, when registration for the 2019 NST—from July 28 through August 2—opens.

The Destination You Should Visit in 2022, Based on Your Zodiac Sign

Astrocartography is a branch of astrology that shows the exact positioning of the planets at the moment you were born. The premise is that the earth holds a resonant memory of this celestial alignment; knowing your map can help you understand why you feel happier in some places than others. Anyone can produce a free astrocartography map online, but you’ll need a professional like astrocartographer Maya White to actually decode it.

“I first got into astrocartography because I needed help understanding my own life,” says White, who purchased her first astro map in 1976 after spotting an ad in a horoscope magazine. She became a certified practitioner in the late ’80s; now she offers private readings, online learning programs, and astrology retreats.

“If you have an accurate time and place of birth, it’s just amazing what information comes out,” she says, noting that it helped her understand where she should live (currently Florida) and also where to travel (she went to India, for example, because her Sun and Uranus lines crossed there).

Climate preferences, work, social environment, and family always factor into her readings. “There is no value in me telling somebody to move to South Dakota if there’s no way they’d do that,” she says. She also pinpoints so-called “trainwreck zones,” areas of the world where certain planetary lines might make for a less-than-stellar experience. Though nothing beats a personalized reading, your star sign alone can offer insight into the types of trips you enjoy most. We asked White to share destination suggestions for where to go next based on the 12 zodiac signs—because it’s never too soon to start planning.

This gallery has been updated since its original publish date.

Amanpuri Thailand

“Aries is an electric personality that bursts onto the scene with a lot of energy,” says White. “But they crave a variety of things to do because they are easily bored.” Fortunately, there are scores of diversions to keep Aries travelers entertained in Thailand. After knocking out some of Bangkok ’s greatest hits ( Wat Pho , The Grand Palace ), the ram can charge over to Ari , a fashionably hip neighborhood with cafés, boutiques, and galleries galore. This is a sign that appreciates the finer things in life, says White, so splurge on a room at Four Seasons Hotel Bangkok at Chao Phraya River , a 2021 Readers’ Choice winner with a swanky vermouth cocktail bar and dreamy riverside pool. White also suggests flying north to Chiang Mai to shop for artisan crafts or head south to the Thai Islands , where a plethora of indulgent luxury resorts await. “While Aries will get lit up by a frenetic city like Bangkok, they also need to retreat and renew,” she says.

Best Places to Live Vancouver Canada

“Bulls are rigid and don’t like to be inconvenienced,” says White. “It takes a lot of energy to make them break their routine and actually go on vacation.” But like a freight train, once this earth sign gets moving, it’s unstoppable. That’s why White suggests an outdoorsy (but not too wild) destination like Vancouver . It’s easily accessible and Taurus can hunker down in a five-star hotel while still taking advantage of everything the ultra-green metropolis has to offer. That means kayaking at Jericho Beach , ziplining over the treetops at Grouse Mountain , strolling the dizzyingly high Capilano Suspension Bridge , pointing out orcas and humpbacks on a whale-watching tour , or taking an enlightening Talking Trees Tour of Stanley Park, led by a local Coast Salish guide. “Taurus is nurtured and sustained by nature,” explains White. “These activities would be exhilarating because they would pop them out of their comfort zone—but not too much.”

Edinburgh Castle illuminated by summer evening sunshine and framed by the partial silhouettes of surrounding trees

“This mutable air sign is always thinking, thinking, thinking,” says White. That’s why Edinburgh —with its “remarkable cultural depth”—is the perfect match for this intellectually curious sign. The twins tend to prioritize experiences over material things, so a thoughtfully designed, centrally located, and budget-conscious Airbnb would suit them just fine. To keep the gears turning, they can tour the caged graves at Greyfriars Kirkyard and underground tenement buildings of Mary King’s Close , ogle the Crown Jewels at Edinburgh Castle , get lost in the artifacts at the National Museum of Scotland , or climb Arthur’s Seat for spectacular views of the city. “Geminis can be real history buffs,” says White. “And Scotland is bound up in rich European history.”

overhead view of food on black table.

“Cancer needs a great hotel, but good food is equally important,” says White. That’s why she’s drawn to an epicurean getaway like Blackberry Mountain in Walland, Tennessee, the sister spin-off of the acclaimed Blackberry Farm . Nestled in the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains, the inn draws well-heeled travelers who prize warm hospitality and extraordinary food and drink. After a busy day of hiking, fly fishing, or testing their balance during a paddleboard yoga session, Cancer can tuck into a seasonally inspired Southern meal at the property’s elegant Three Sisters or Firetower restaurants. (The latter boasts 360-degree mountain views, thanks to its perch in a restored forest lookout tower.) With a full belly, they may then “retreat to their protective shell”—which, in Blackberry’s case, looks like a chic cottage with a flagstone terrace, outdoor fireplace, and fine Egyptian linens. That patient Cancer may need to book their visit months in advance only adds to its appeal. “Cancer loves doing something exclusive,” says White. “It’s a way to showcase their personality, taste, and determination.”

The Best New Affordable Hotels in the World: 2024 Hot List

“Leo is quite prideful when it comes to love and beauty,” says White. “To see the Taj Mahal—built as a monument to love by Emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his wife Mumtaz Mahal—feeds the lion’s ego.” (There isn’t a Leo alive who wouldn’t secretly wish for the same thing.) After a pampering stay at the Moorish-Mogul Oberoi Amarvilas in Agra, White wants Leos to head east to the glittering jewel of Jaipur and check into The Johri , a new boutique property tucked inside one of the city’s oldest bazaars. Co-founded by Siddharth Kasliwal , ninth-generation owner of The Gem Palace, the inn blends sumptuous Rajasthani furnishings with quirky Wes Anderson-esque twists. Because Leos appreciate over-the-top experiences, she recommends ending the trip with a stay at the Taj Lake Palace in Udaipur, a royal palace plunked in the middle of picturesque Lake Pichola, or joining a safari at Ranthambore National Park to see other big cats—specifically wild tigers —in their natural habitat.

A Classic New England Lighthouse The Bass Harbor Head Light In The First Light Of Dawn Acadia National Park Maine USA

“Virgos like things neat and clean,” says White. “They crave structure and are uncomfortable in messy situations. But they’re also a mutable earth sign, which means they go with the flow.” Acadia National Park in Maine offers the best of all worlds: a beautiful “semi-tamed wilderness” with “well-constructed carriage paths” for easier hiking and biking. Virgo will be smitten by the stellar sunrises, says White, and will love exploring the port towns dotting the coastline—combing for colorful polished rocks at Jasper Beach in Machiasport and shopping for artisan-made furniture and handwoven textiles in Camden and Rockland. (“Virgo really values quality,” she notes.) Come nightfall, a safari-inspired glamping experience like the one offered by Under Canvas Acadia in Surry will help Virgo relax and unwind.

Libra is a cardinal air sign, ruled by Venus and drawn to all things beauty and art. Enter Provence , with its breathtaking fields of lavender, Impressionistic hilltop villages, and glasses brimming with the finest róse. “This is a very Libran-type society,” says White. “They appreciate good food and gracious service, revel in cultural pleasures, and see life as a canvas waiting to be painted.” (It’s no wonder so many famous artists—Cézanne, Picasso, Van Gogh—found inspiration here.) With their exacting standards, Libras lean into the finest accommodations: Hôtel Crillon le Brave in the foothills of Mont Ventoux trades in old-world charm, decorating its suites with still-lifes by renowned local artist Julian Merrow-Smith (with bowls of fresh fruit to match). Whether they’re shopping for sunflowers at the market in Aix-en-Provence, touring the Roman aqueduct bridge near Nîmes, or popping into a charming boulangerie in the narrow backstreets of Villeneuve-lès-Avignon, there’s always something enchanting for Libra to behold.

“It’s been a difficult couple of years for everyone,” says White. “But Scorpio, perhaps more than other signs, needs a renewal. They’re constantly listening to everyone else’s problems and took on more than their usual share during the pandemic.” That’s why she’s sending the mercurial scorpion to a place beyond compare: the Grand Canyon . “Scorpios get inspired by being in the presence of something greater than themselves,” she explains. “A natural wonder like the Grand Canyon humbles them and helps them recalibrate.” This is particularly true when they veer off the beaten path. Instead of joining the tourist fray at the South Rim, head to the canyon’s lesser-trafficked North Rim or sign up for an intense multi-day rafting trip on the Colorado River. Post-pandemic, hiking to stunning Havasu falls in the Havasupai Indian Reservation would be a dream come true. (For now, the grounds remain closed to tourism to protect its tribal habitants.)

Herd of elephants in the african savannah

Sagittarius

“Sagittarius loves to travel,” says White of the intrepid archer, a mutable fire sign that’s always on the hunt for its next adventure. After two years of pandemic-related lockdowns, White sees something epic in Sag’s future: a safari to Kruger National Park in South Africa and/or an ascent of Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania . “The archer has a wild streak and feels rejuvenated in the presence of animals and birds.” Tackling something physically immersive like a walking safari or climbing expedition would feel especially kinesthetic. “Sagittarius needs a wilderness experience to heal their spirit and deepen their connection with self,” says White. There’s just one caveat: While Sags aren’t terribly uppity about accommodations, they do require decent Wi-Fi. (To hang out with giraffes is amazing and all—but even more satisfying if they can share it on Instagram.)

boats on water

The sea goat is ruled by Saturn, the taskmaster of all planets—so naturally, this serious earth sign wants to feel like the master of their own destiny. “Capricorns also appreciate status,” says White. “They’re not as flashy as Leo, but they’re still climbers—socially and financially.” That’s why White recommends chartering a yacht in the Caribbean, Mediterranean, or other beachy idyll. The Moorings , in particular, catches her eye because the long-running outfitter books crewed yachts with a professional captain and first mate as well as more D.I.Y. adventures where a licensed guest can steer their own ship. In the British Virgin Islands, this means Cap designs their own itinerary, penciling in grotto wading at The Baths National Park in Virgin Gorda or snorkeling with blue-striped grunt at Monkey Point off Guana Island. Captaining one’s own ship is the more affordable option too, which appeals to Cap’s need to control the purse strings.

waterfall to the left of a suspension bridge in Ecuador.

This fixed air sign is ruled by Uranus, the planet of questioning and innovation. “They need to be mentally stimulated,” says White. “They’re deep and eclectic thinkers who prize inventiveness and want to understand the forces that drive creation.” Aquarians also tend to be humanitarian, keen to change the world for the better. White believes a journey to the heart of the Ecuadorian Amazon would be eye opening for the inquisitive water bearer. ( Papangu Tours , an Indigenous tour operator, can make the arrangements.) They’re intrigued by other people’s lives and spirituality and would want to educate themselves about the oil, mining, and logging industries threatening sacred jungle land and communities. Aquarius might also like to experience a healing session with an Indigenous shaman. (Experimenting with ayahuasca is optional, as many Aquarians are happy to live vicariously through the transcendental experiences of others.) “This adventure is a total wild card, but one Aquarius would absolutely embrace,” says White. “It’s also a bit of a bragging point. Aquarius likes being different, tackling something others may perceive as strange or crazy.”

North Island a Luxury Collection Resort Seychelles

White calls this mutable sign “the environmentalist of the Zodiac” because they care deeply about the earth and their role in it. Symbolized by two fish swimming in opposite directions, Pisces is naturally drawn to watery destinations—the farther flung, the better. The Seychelles , a small island nation about 1,000 miles off the coast of East Africa, checks all the right boxes: A remote ecological paradise with a host of wildlife and non-motorized water sports to experience. Lock in one of 11 sustainably built, thatched-roof villas at Gold List 2020 winner North Island , sandwiched between a forest of tacamahac trees and a pristine coralline beach, and then go exploring. Pisces, which White calls a “deeply compassionate sign,” would enjoy partaking in a marine conservation program (dugongs and giant tortoises are both protected here) or other voluntourism effort. “They really do care, and want to feel like they’ve contributed,” says White.

Astrological adventures: where to travel based on your zodiac sign

Adventurous Aries? Voyaging Virgo? Globetrotting Gemini? Whether you find western astrology to be just a bit of fun or something more serious, it can be amusing to see what the planets say about your personality. In turn, you might just find that your astrological placements provide a useful gauge for many life choices – including where to travel.

We’ve scoured the zodiac, and Planet Earth, and come up with suggestions for where to go based on your astrological sign.

Editor's note: during COVID-19 travel restrictions are prone to change. Always check before departure and follow local guidance.

Western astrology is based on the constellations that fall along the celestial ecliptic – that is, the apparent path of the sun around the earth’s sphere. Though the recommendations below are based largely on your sun sign (your big-picture sign – the constellation that the sun was visibly positioned in front of at the moment of your birth), it’s important to note that there is more to astrology. You should also check your moon sign (said to influence your inner/emotional life) and your rising or ascendant sign (the constellation that was appearing over the horizon at the time and place of your birth) – which is believed to influence how you appear outwardly to others.

Aries – sunny SoCal, USA

♈ March 21 – April 19

As the first sign in the zodiac, you are the astrological young-at-heart Aries. You are pioneering, spontaneous and a burst of sunshine. You know how to get the party started and like to be challenged. For your perfect getaway, head to Southern California , where you can bask in the sunny glow. Hire a car, put the top down and live your most glamorous life cruising the Sunset Strip , clubbing with LA’s prettiest, or soaking up the rays in chilled-out San Diego . Get your hit of much-needed action by signing up for a surfing lesson or follow your strong spontaneous side and drive to Las Vegas just for the hell of it. It’s the Aries way.

Alternative getaway: Australia is huge and diverse and just as adventurous. Climb the Sydney Harbour Bridge for that all-important dose of adrenaline, or road-trip across the Red Centre, where you’ll feel right at home – after all, your ruling planet is Mars.

Florence's skyline at dusk

Taurus – Tuscany, Italy

♉ April 20 – May 20

No one understands how to enjoy the earth’s finest pleasures better than you, dear Taurus. Your constellation may be the bull, but your ruling planet is Venus and you are easy to seduce with fine tastes and sophisticated, beautiful surroundings. Head to Italy – Tuscany specifically – where you can cozy up in a rustic villa, crack open a bottle of fine Chianti and take in the perfect views. Make sure to plan a day to see some of humanity’s most elegant artworks – Botticelli’s The Birth of Venus hangs at the Uffizi Gallery in Florence , for a start.

Alternative getaway: Napa Valley will also leave you full and happy with its exquisite New World wine, local galleries and gourmet food. Nab a table at the French Laundry at least a month in advance, and plan a relaxing hike through the vineyards the next day to soothe body and mind.

Dome of the Rock, Jerusalem, Israel

Gemini – twin cities

♊ May 21 – June 20

As the sign dominated by the twin constellation, you are known for having multiple personalities, Gemini. We know it’s just because you love meeting people, communicating and sharing ideas, and since you’re a mutable sign, you are prone to change (often, your mind). Your ruling planet is white-hot Mercury, which zips around the sun faster than any other planet, so it’s important for you to visit somewhere that stimulates your ever-ticking brain and offers something to fit your dualistic, fluctuating nature. Might we suggest a twin-city getaway? Tel Aviv and Jerusalem are sure to keep your insatiable curiosity fed – Tel Aviv’s buzzing nightlife and glitzy dining scene will fill your need for the fast-paced life, and when your quieter, more inquisitive twin comes out, you can soak up Jerusalem’s vast history and cultural mix.

Alternative getaway: Only 2½ hours’ drive apart, Vancouver and Seattle are another perfect twin-city mix for you. What could be more stimulating than visiting two countries in one day? This pair has so much going on you’ll never get bored. Move from great coffee to cosmopolitan views to isolated islands to creative cocktails – even by the minute, if you want.

Two glasses of rose wine in Provence, France

Cancer – South of France

♋ June 21 – July 22

Kind Cancer, you really get what "slow travel" means. Cancer’s constellation is the crab and you’re ruled by the emotional moon, meaning you are most comfortable in your shell and like to feel at home wherever you are. That means having a few creature comforts and a very easy-going pace to your trip: tasty food, a thoughtful museum, maybe a cooking course. We think you should spend some time in the south of France , where the relaxed energy will revive you. Snag a cozy rental apartment (hotels are far too impersonal for you) in Aix-en-Provence , where you can wander the leafy boulevards, stop for an espresso or a glass of Provençal rosé, then meander through one of France’s oldest art museums – the Musée Granet – to fill your culture cup.

Alternative getaway: Charleston , South Carolina is the sort of small-but-cosmopolitan city that will appeal to Crabs. There is an unpretentious food scene for you to splurge on, lots of history to learn about and plenty of antiques stores to snoop around in for something fine, old and, most importantly, meaningful to bring home.

A traveller wearing a backpack enjoys an autumnal valley view in Patagonia, Argentina.

Leo – Argentina

♌ July 23 – August 22

Leos – the lions of the zodiac – are ruled by the sun and tend to light up dance floors and gatherings with their warm energy. It’s true that many Leos love the spotlight, but we know you are also big softies who crave true romance, childlike adventure and good energy. Travel is in your blood and you need to go somewhere that will produce great stories to tell for years to come. Somewhere that has it all: Argentina . The blazing Buenos Aires nights will give you plenty of opportunities to get up to no good, and you can indulge your passionate, fiery personality with lavish steaks and wine, then hit the beach for a party like no other or maybe an amorous interlude with a mysterious stranger. You do nothing by halves, so plan a hiking trip in Patagonia to find those epic views you crave... and yourself, of course.

Alternative getaway: Hong Kong is an energetic, exciting mix for Leos, who love a little bit of everything. You’ll be sampling dumplings and dim sum on every corner, stumbling in and out of cool bars, practising self-care with a high-rise spa treatment and spinning around the harbor’s quieter beaches for some all-important alone-time.

A swimmer relaxes in an infinity pool, backdropped by the Kuala Lumpur skyline.

Virgo – Malaysia

♍ August 23 – September 22

Virgo’s sign is the virgin, but really, you are a practical creator ruled by the asteroid Chiron (in Greek mythology, Chiron was a healing centaur wounded by one of Hercules’s arrows). You are exacting and value organization, clarity, luxury and well-being. Though sometimes you come across as picky, you are in fact a sign that constantly thinks about how to perfect things and are a natural-born helper. In many ways, you live to fix, and by that count, Virgo, we reckon you need a little healing time for yourself on a spa retreat. The Banjaran Hotsprings Retreat in Perak, Malaysia  offers opulent relaxation, with plenty of trickling streams, neatly arranged zen gardens, private plunge pools and stone massages on speed dial.

Alternative getaway: If your soul is calling for a little more than just spa treatments, head for serene Santa Fe, New Mexico, where upscale restaurants, plush-but-unique hotels and crystal-clear mountain air are sure to satiate your maiden sensibilities. And we know you’ll still want that hit of luxuriating, so book yourself for an afternoon at Japanese-style spa, Ten Thousand Waves .

A vast space with a dome covered in murals and Arabic writing

Libra – Istanbul, Turkey

♎ September 23 – October 22

The most balanced sign in the zodiac is Libra, whose name in Latin and constellation are weighing scales. Libras are the fair judges of the world who value balance, peace and harmony, and because you are also ruled by Venus, you’re hopeless romantics who can’t help but love beautiful things. As an intellectual air sign, you’re great philosophizers and thinkers and appreciate anything that’s thoughtful and well-made. With such a need for symmetry in your life, we think you should head to the very center of the world: Istanbul , a city that straddles two continents. In Istanbul, you won’t have to choose between Asia and Europe (we know you hate picking sides); you’ll get them both in one, or stay completely centered by taking a boat trip down the mighty Bosphorus, which divides the city and the two continents.

Alternative getaway: Peacemaker Libras will also appreciate Prague , where one of the most famously non-violent transfers of power ever took place – the Velvet Revolution. Sign yourself up for a walking tour of Prague’s architecture (it’s a huge mix, so no need to choose a favorite style) and then debrief it all with a travel companion or new friend in one of the city’s many intellectuals’ cafes.

Children with guitars busk on the streets of Johannesburg.

Scorpio – Johannesburg, South Africa

♏ October 23 – November 21

Brave, deep, dark and enigmatic, scorpions are drawn to the mysterious and like to push boundaries. Your ruling planet is Pluto – arguably not a planet at all, far away, difficult to see and composed largely of ice and rock – but if you manage to get up close, also beautiful, just like you, Scorpio. Though you’re curious about everywhere and can find the art in almost anything, we think you will appreciate somewhere that, like you, has the power to survive and thrive through difficult times. And like you, Johannesburg is a city with a rich personality and scars that only make it stronger. We know you feel a lot, though you keep a hard shell that covers your obvious emotions; you’ll relate to Jo’burg’s turbulent history and the city’s magnificent ability to hold itself up amidst times of great and deep divide.

Alternative getaway: Explore your love of the dark of night and your curiosity about the occult in simmering New Orleans . There are plenty of voodoo rituals to witness, shadowy corners to lurk in (your favorite pose) and bright bars to bask in if you decide to show that elusive and addictive Scorpio magnetism.

A traveller admires a view of many islands in Guatape, Colombia.

Sagittarius – South America (all of it)

♐ November 22 – December 21

One word for you Sagittarius: expansiveness. You’re ruled by the biggest planet in the solar system – Jupiter, a world associated with bounty, blind optimism and reach. Sagittarius is symbolized by the archer constellation and you are known wanderers – the natural travelers of the zodiac. As truth-seekers, you are prone to fly off to find yourself when any mood at all strikes. We know you’re restless and love the wild things, whether that means camping under the stars, swimming in pristine lakes, exploring gritty urban scenes or all of the above. A short city-break just won’t do for you, so that’s why we think you should set off on the adventure of a lifetime by backpacking around South America . With a whole continent at your disposal and plenty of passionate culture to fuel your fire-sign personality, you just might find the fountain of youth you always seem to be searching for.

Alternative getaway: King-god Jupiter’s most sacred animal was the eagle, so voyage into the wilds of Mongolia to stay with the last remaining eagle hunters, who commune with these magnificent birds for their livelihood. Staying in a traditional ger and living the nomadic lifestyle is about as restlessly Sagittarian a travel goal as we can imagine.

A busy street at night in Taipei, lit by lanterns.

Capricorn – Taiwan

♑ December 22 – January 19

As the most ambitious, driven and hard-working sign in the zodiac, Capricorns deserve a holiday more than any other. And yet you won’t be satisfied with just any old vacation. You desire to go somewhere important, to learn all of the things you can about the world and to remain efficient in the going. You’re ruled by Saturn, a god who ushered in a golden age on earth and was celebrated through feasting and revelry, meaning you also know how to have a good time. So, we’re sending you to Taiwan , where the work-hard/play-hard ethic has long held sway. You will marvel at Taiwan’s clean, efficient public transport, its fiercely freedom-loving attitude and its verve for getting things done. But when work clocks off here, there are all-night markets to eat your way through, temples to lose yourself in and beaches to linger on.

Alternative getaway: As driven as you are, Capricorn, you’ll appreciate a feeling of success from your travels, and you also tend to be a completionist. Taking a pilgrimage, such as walking the Camino de Santiago in Spain , will give you that sense of accomplishment, and may also encourage you to explore your spirituality and follow your heart – something you can always use a little more of in your life.

The Detroit skyline at dusk, dominated by several high-rise art deco skyscrapers

Aquarius – Detroit, USA

♒ January 20 – February 18

Oh, Aquarius, you love to act the rebel, but we know you’re a true humanitarian who’s constantly seeking all that is innovative, avant-garde and experimental. You root for underdogs and you value freedom, counterculture and, frankly, a little bit of the weird in life. We think you’ll dig Detroit : America’s greatest comeback kid, a place full of creative people employing DIY spirit to revive their city from economic peril. We suggest taking a tour of the on-the-rebound ruined Packard Plant to get a sense of just where Detroit’s coming from, and then hop from the hip-to-hipper stalls at Eastern Market looking for an eccentric souvenir to take home. And since we know you love music, don’t miss the Motown Historical Museum , where the likes of Stevie Wonder, Diana Ross and Marvin Gaye all got their start.

Alternative getaway: It’s important, Aquarius, for you to feel you’re making a difference. You also love getting off the beaten track (read: non-conformist), so you could also head to Kyrgyzstan , where you can lose yourself in the remote Tian Shan mountains and avail of the strong network of community-based tourism organizations to arrange homestays and excursions like walnut-picking and horse riding, ensuring your money is flowing into the local economy for the greater good.

A stunning mountain range with clouds smothering some peaks: Mount Everest and other Himalayan peaks on a sunny day.

Pisces – The Himalaya

♓ February 19 – March 20

Dreamy Pisces, you rarely come down to earth and may not even be from this planet, but you are the healer and the lover of the zodiac. You’re also an old soul, a spiritual seeker, a romantic. You need downtime, gentle air and somewhere free of crowds. Short of sending you into outer space (where your mind mainly seems to stray anyway), we suggest you ascend to the roof of the world. Tibet is vast, exceptionally beautiful, brimming with spirituality and quiet – all things you value in life and travel. Your sign is symbolized by the fish constellation, and many Pisceans are revived by water, so aim for one of Tibet’s sacred lakes, such as Nam-tso or Yamdrok-tso , where you can gaze at turquoise waves, go for a swim, and then drift from monastery to monastery, meditating, learning and practising compassion for all humankind, just as you are meant to do.

Alternative getaway: With your highly intuitive (even psychic) nature, you gravitate towards the supernatural. On the Pampa Colorada in Peru is a series of strange and unexplained ancient geoglyphs: the Nazca Lines . These giant images of animals and insects are only visible from high above. Who made these glyphs and why? Was it aliens or an ancient fertility cult? The Shooting Star

Offbeat, Incredible and Sustainable – These Travel Companies are Changing the Way You Experience India.

sustainable tourism india | sustainable tourism practices india | sustainable tourism projects in india

Sustainable tourism – which includes eco-tourism and community based tourism – is the need of the hour in India. Sustainable tourism in India is being driven by social enterprises and offbeat travel companies. These not only offer sustainable holidays in India and drive sustainable tourism projects in India, but also create meaningful travel opportunities that can elevate your “Incredible India” experience. This post looks at responsible tourism in India, based on my travels over the past five years.

There are many ways to experience India. You can stay in a generic hotel or backpacker hostel, hire a car for sightseeing, have casual interactions with people working in the hospitality industry, take some colourful photos and call it a trip.

The real India though – the India that inspires and humbles, the India that is artistic yet genuine, the India that is simultaneously incredible and heartbreaking – takes a little effort to find.

Uttarakhand ecotourism, ecotourism India, sustainable tourism India

Although I grew up in this country, it’s only in the last five years of travelling that I’ve discovered a more unique way to experience it. Away from the chaotic tourist towns and pages of the usual guidebooks, I’ve interacted intimately with an India that has put everything I know about life in perspective.

And much of this India, I’ve found by travelling with – or seeking suggestions from – sustainable tourism projects in India, scattered across the country, run by inspiring individuals, in fair partnership with local communities and conscious of their impact on the local environment.

If you seek to experience India (and give back to it) meaningfully, consider travelling with these responsible travel companies, the best sustainable tourism examples in India:

Green People

Locations: Nag Tibba (near Mussoorie), Kanatal and Raithal (near Uttarkashi) in the Garhwal region of Uttarakhand

Who knew that tiny obscure mountain villages in Uttarakhand, cradled by the snow-capped Garhwal Himalayas, are home to some of the world’s most expensive and wanted superfoods? Think amaranth, goji berries and foxtail millet, among others.

And yet mountain dwellers are abandoning their farmlands for basic jobs in cities – unaware of the value of these superfoods. Out of this tragic situation was born Green People, an organisation pioneering sustainable tourism in India. It aims to encourage the reverse migration of farmers – by creating supply chains for the superfoods they can grow, and more importantly, by instilling pride in them for their unique culture and way of life. As part of their sustainable tourism projects in India, Green People has set up “Goat Villages” – rustic ecolodges – near Nag Tibba, Kanatal and Uttarkashi in the Uttarakhand Himalayas. They’ve hired locals, trained them in hospitality at luxury resorts and entrusted them with independently hosting travellers from around the world, in aesthetically built Garhwali-style houses.

I’ve spent a week each at the Goat Villages near Nag Tibba and Uttarkashi – blissfully away from civilisation, electricity and technology – for some of my most rejuvenating and inspiring escapes amid the wild beauty of these mountains. The locations are spectacular, the local interactions heartwarming and the food – amaranth porridge, mandava-tofu sandwiches, Hersil rajma, barnyard millet to name a few – will make you rethink your organic and local choices.

The superfoods grown in the Garhwal Himalayas are being sold by Green People under the brand name “Bakri Chaap” in supermarkets in big cities across India. Isn’t it ironic that while we’ve taken to consuming quinoa and couscous – which travel from halfway across the world – we’re mostly unaware of the delicious, nutritional food that grows in our own backyard?

Evolve Back

Locations: Kabini, Coorg and Hampi – Karnataka

eco luxury india, responsible travel in India, evolve back kabini, ecotourism india

I learnt early on in my travels that it is possible for an accommodation to be incredibly luxurious and environmentally responsible at the same time. But I didn’t realise to what extent, until I spent time at Evolve Back – a chain of eco-luxury resorts across Karnataka.

Evolve Back Coorg (previously called Orange County) was perhaps the first benchmark of luxury sustainable tourism in India – a sprawling 300-acre coffee plantation, interspersed with grand silver oak trees and plantation-style bungalows – built in local red brick and thatched or tiled roofs – to pamper travellers yet immerse them in the wild ways of nature. Each bungalow is fitted with RO water filters, eliminating the need for plastic bottled water; in other ways too, the plantation (and other Evolve Back properties) are pretty much plastic-free zones.

Rainwater is harvested and its consumption in each cottage digitally monitored; wind electricity is generated at another site and fed into the state’s electricity grid; all waste is either composted or recycled; education in local schools is supported and monitored. And it is perhaps India’s only hotel chain to have an entire team dedicated to responsible travel.

Yet, these sustainability initiatives are not the only reason to indulge in an Evolve Back experience. In Kabini, I was enchanted by majestic sunsets and high tea under an old fig tree; river and forest safaris with passionate naturalists who made me fall in love with India’s fascinating forests; a meal selection dedicated to sumptuous organic and locally grown food; and night skies that shimmered endlessly with stars.

And although I haven’t personally travelled to Evolve Back Hampi yet, I hear it is styled after the royal extravagance of the ancient Vijayanagar Empire…

Himalayan Ark

Locations: Kumaon, Uttarakhand

himalayan ark, munsiyari homestays, uttarakhand responsible tourism, sustainable tourism in India

When I finally decided to travel to the remote Himalayan region of Munsiyari, eleven hours by road from the nearest train station and flanked by the spectacular snow-capped Panchachuli range, I had no idea how much it was going to change my perceptions of Indian women and the patriarchal culture that plagues our society .

Across the small mountain villages of Munsiyari tehsil, the social enterprise Himalayan Ark has aided local women to set up homestays, some in old and charming Kumaoni houses, others in aspirational homes with large glass windows overlooking the mountains. The warmth of the experience remains the same across the homestays though. Although most women in rural India seldom have land ownership rights or independent incomes to run their households, Himalayan Ark’s approach has enabled the women of Munsiyari to directly earn revenues from their homestays, and to step out of the kitchen to train as trekking and birdwatching guides.

As part of their sustainable tourism projects in India, Himalayan Ark also offers mountain treks and expeditions, employing local guides, sourcing local produce and offering eco-conscious insights into this relatively undiscovered region. In May every year, the unique Himal Kalasutra festival brings out a different side of this region – featuring high altitude marathons, yoga workshops, photography workshops, birdwatching, celebration of the indigenous cuisine and a traditional carnival. Unlike most fusion mountain festivals, it is organised by locals and attended by locals, but discerning travellers are welcome to join!

Locations: Across Northeast India

Kipepeo, galo tribe, arunachal pradesh ecotourism

The northeastern states of India are full of fascinating, unexplored, uncharted territory, and while tourism is still in its nascent stage, it is incumbent upon us travellers to ensure that it isn’t spoiled the same way as India’s scenic but garbage-filled hill stations. Consider Kipepeo, an organisation that partners with local homestays to offer trips (and custom tours) in the most natural way possible.

On my first trip with them, our group wandered off the usual Arunachal Pradesh map and landed up in a village of the Galo tribe to celebrate their indigenous Mopin festival . Amid Shamanic chanting, hypnotic local dances and being offered rats for dinner at a village gathering (gulp), I felt like I had skipped a few decades and gone back to the India of yore – a most intriguing world!

Desia Ecotourism

Locations: Koraput, Odisha

Desia ecotourism, community tourism odisha

The fascinating tribal world of Odisha is threatened by many challenges: interference by local authorities, pressure on the youth to ‘modernise’, decreasing forest cover, and most of all, insensitive tourists wanting to photograph local tribes without learning a thing about their culture or way of life.

I was happy to resolve my internal conflict – between discovering a fascinating culture and irresponsible travel – when I stumbled upon Desia Ecotourism, a company founded by a local of eastern Odisha with a keen interest in the tribal culture of the southern Koraput region. Our modes of exploration included cycling through mango orchards to nearby tribal villages and riding pillion on motorbikes to further ones; our interactions with local tribes at their weekly haats (tribal markets) felt genuine and unobtrusive; and living at Desia Ecolodge, run largely by a mix of local tribes, made me feel at home in such a different part of the world.

As a New York Times story recently expounded, sustainable tourism in India and elsewhere is as much about environmental impact as it is about being inclusive and respectful of local communities.

Grassroutes Journeys

Locations: Purushwadi, Dehna and Walvanda – Maharashtra

I remember wandering about the quiet streets of Purushwadi, a village in rural Maharashtra, on a dark moonless night, watching millions of fireflies communicate with potential partners through light beams, magically lighting up the earth in perfect symphony with thousands of stars in the skies above.

There was a time when locals, unaware of this beautiful phenomenon, didn’t hesitate to kill (or at best, ignore) fireflies that came to their village to mate every monsoon.

But using a unique business model where the local community is an equal partner in tourism, Grassroute Journeys has co-created the “Million Fireflies Festival” and other humbling travel experiences across rural Maharashtra. Besides playing an active role in protecting their luminescent visitors, the locals are now able to supplement their erratic agricultural incomes by hosting travellers in their homes (or in tents), and keep their traditional way of farming and life alive.

And travellers like you and me, wandering in search of unique customs, exotic natural phenomena, joyful countryside living and sustainable tourism in India, can rejoice in both, finding such experiences not far from chaotic Mumbai and supporting rural village communities in the process.

Spiti Ecosphere

Locations: Spiti Valley, Himachal Pradesh

spiti ecosphere, responsible travel bloggers

Volunteer-travelling for a month with Spiti Ecosphere in the high altitude Spiti Valley, back in 2011, was my earliest introduction to responsible travel . It was the first time I learnt about community-run homestays and how tourism can supplement meagre farming incomes, how the money we spend on travel could be used to light up someone’s home with solar energy, and how different our travel experiences can be when we stay with locals and interact closely with their culture, food and way of life.

Spiti Ecosphere believes in an equal emphasis on the planet, people and profits – and after all these years, I’ve realised that this is the only way for sustainable tourism in India to really move forward.

As for my experience – volunteering with them, exploring those stark barren mountains, lying under millions of stars at night, spending time with monks and nuns , it changed everything I thought I wanted from my own life. It made me quit my job at the Singapore Tourism Board, and gradually paved the way to this blog where I try to write about the joy of travelling meaningfully.

The Blue Yonder

Locations: Kerala, Pondicherry

Nangiar Koothu, The Blue Yonder, Kerala ecotourism, meaningful travel India

I thought I had already explored   pretty ‘offbeat’ parts of Kerala independently – until I went on a journey with The Blue Yonder, a social enterprise started by a Kerala local, to learn about how the River Nila has inspired life along its shores. We met local musicians and artisans – some of who are the last in a lost generation of artists keeping a dying tradition or craft alive; we ended up watching a soul-stirring, solo Nangiar Koothu performance alongside village locals; and even felt entranced by an Oracle, supposedly possessed by the local deity.

During my travels with The Blue Yonder, I began to perceive our impact on local communities differently. Many organisations only compensate the locals we meet along the way for the services they offer – mainly homestays and guides. But TBY professes a different philosophy when it comes to sustainable tourism practices in India. Valuing (and hence compensating) the time that local artisans spend interacting with us as travellers, answering our many questions and being photographed by us. And if we really think about it, that is exactly how us urban creative people (aka freelancers) want to be treated too.

India Untravelled (aggregating sustainable tourism India offerings)

Locations: Across India

India Untravelled, responsible tourism in India, ecotourism destinations India

I co-founded India Untravelled back in 2012, hoping to bridge the digital marketing gap between small-scale sustainable homestays and discerning travellers looking for authentic experiences within India. The two-year long journey taught me a lot about running a business ( we sold in 2014 ), but also helped me appreciate a different way of exploring India – one that I have never  stopped swearing by.

The current owners of India Untravelled have strived to keep our original dream alive – and now aggregate sustainable tourism projects in India. Their curated homestay experiences across India include Uttarakhand, Ladakh, Kerala and other states.

Other organisations that promise sustainable tourism in India (I’m yet to travel with them):

Roots ladakh: kargil.

In the valleys and mountains around Kargil, where tourism infrastructure is still pretty underdeveloped, Roots Ladakh – set up by locals – promises respectful interaction and understanding of local communities.

Native Folks : Goa

We’re all familiar with the tourist-infested beaches of Goa, but Native Folks promises a different experience, living with locals on the laidback Divar Island.

Rural Pleasure : Gujarat

While exploring Gujarat, I fell short of days to join Rural Pleasure to learn about the way of life of the fascinating Dang tribe.

Kabani : Kerala

Amid the scenic rice paddies and backwaters of southern Kerala, Kabani – run by Kerala locals – works with local communities to offer homestays, travel programs run entirely by women for women and a chance to delve deeper into the offbeat side of this popular state.

Ladakhi Women’s Travel Company : Ladakh

In the Indian Himalayas, where its still taboo for local women to train as mountain guides, the Ladakhi Women’s Travel Company – started and run entirely by local Ladakhi women – is challenging cultural stereotypes. I’ve heard  great things about their trips in this spectacular region, which is being ruined by irresponsible tour operators.

Health Nut : Uttarakhand

As the vegan movement catches on in India, Health Nut , run by a health coach from my hometown Dehradun, offers eco-conscious retreats that focus on health, nutrition, reversing diseases and reconnecting with the great outdoors.

I had the good fortune to live with the Bodo villagers in Manas National Park in recent time. Manas Spring Festival took place and paved way for the women of the community to take part in culinary tourism and are at present being trained in home stay etc. The initiative was path breaking because they are the wives of ex poachers and now turned into protectors of one horned rhinos. All the rhinos in Manas were killed during decade long ethnic strife in the land 🙁 I felt amazing to be able to contribute to the cause of something so massive and so meaningful 🙂 And I am traveling to the fireflies festival by Grass routes in a few days time!

That sounds like an amazing story! Is there a specific organisation training them, or how can I get in touch? I’d love to explore it one of these days.

And yay, the fireflies festival is awesome; hope you’ll love it too!

Dear Shivya, as always I admire your travelling and your posts. I have travelled to India , my first time two years ago, as a single female traveler with my camera, as I am a professional photographer. Through my profession I just can’t do group travelling, since I love to wonder of into hidden alleys and little places where I often don’t see a tourist all day long. I had the most kindest driver for 11 days out of my almost 3 week trip mostly in Rajasthan. I had ruled out the places I wanted to see and at times the driver would even take to some interesting places to see, I was really blessed and felt very safe, since I explored all the places on my own. Yet I might miss out on some unique spots by just travelling alone??? So I guess this is a question to you. I lost my heart in your beautiful country. On another note, have you been in Myanmar yet?

I totally hear you Cornelia. I’m the same – group travelling is just not for me! Except for a special trip with The Blue Yonder, I’ve travelled with most of these companies either solo, or with just one friend. I love travelling alone, independently, without a fixed itinerary, finding my own little places too. But I try to mix it up with some advice and some plans by such companies – as I think it’s a great way to meet locals, learn about their life, and yet give back in little ways. Also helps in a deeper understanding of the places I visit. It could mean doing a short volunteering stint, or having them plan one leg of your trip in the future 🙂

I haven’t been to Myanmar yet, but I sure want to one of these days. Are you heading there?

Wah! Just what I needed to start my day right! Thanks! 😊

Wah! Just what I needed to hear to pen more such posts 😉

Haha! Good to hear! 😊

I’ve felt a bit wary of travelling to India – too many stories that aren’t always good – but I’m going to share this post so I can find it, because I think travelling India this way will be perfect! Your posts are a delight, and always interesting. Thank you!

Thanks Nadya! I know India doesn’t have the best reputation for travellers (especially solo female) – and sometimes for good reason. But as a solo woman traveller myself, I can personally vouch for these companies that truly take you off the beaten track – in a responsible and safe way.

Just beautiful images and intentions. I love that companies are seeing the value in sustainable tourism options. Some amazing options here for travel to have positive impacts on the traveler and the local communities. Cheers from Copenhagen.

Incidentally my next post is based on Copenhagen; love your city! And yes, it’s great to see more companies adopting sustainable tourism practices – makes a big differences in the way we experience places too.

Have you known of Unventured? How did you miss it?

Haven’t heard about it before; will google now.

Thanks for the nice summary of sustainable tourism companies.

Hope it’ll be helpful on your own travels, Anand.

Very attractive & beautiful place to visit. Thanks for such nice information.

Thanks for reading!

This is fantastic. I love how ethical and local travel is becoming more important

Thanks Rebecca! I always say it’s the need of the hour – but also a more immersive and meaningful way to travel.

Bookmarking this post, Shivya. Lately I have been preoccupied with ways to travel sustain-ably and encourage friends and family to do so too. I’d love to travel with some of these organisations and learn more about their initiatives and models. Thank you– Mohana

Yay, mission accomplished! I’m so glad you’re thinking about sustainable travel and encouraging others too. I’m still on a journey to learn more, and these orgs have really helped. Hope you’ll feel the same way Mohana!

Hi Shivya, For donkey years, I have been a regular reader of your blog. A solo woman traveler who is location independent. Sounds marvelous and inspiring.

Such an expansive post on travelling in India and exploring the limitless facets and humans often hidden. Thanks for bringing this rich culture out and yes I do follow India Untravelled. Love the stuff about travel alive and vibrant. Eco tourism in India is a must and glad you wrote about it.

Hi Shivya, I discovered you through Kuntal Joiser’s instagram account, and I must admit I found a gem of a blog. I hate those blogs full of ads, that try to sell you something all the time, where girls travel dressed as if they were going to their sister’s marriage are posing in bikini’s with a load of make up and not a drop of sweat, or that post highly edited and unrealistic photos. I am more your travel type: I enjoy traveling slowly, in comfortable clothes, explore a lot on foot, like to mix with the locals and eat their food, roam the backstreets and love off-the-beaten-track destinations. And I absolutely love India: been 10 times, mostly for work, but almost every time I could travel a bit, and the best part is that I got invited to my colleagues houses and met their families, that was for me one of the best travel experiences ever. I am very interested in trekking in Ladakh and will definitely check out this Women’s travel company, thanks for recommending it! Congratulations on your blog and on your lifestyle! I did not have the opportunity to leave it all behind when I was younger but I really admire the courage of the people who do it.

Another input for a sustainable company. A company that was sustainable, eco friendly before the words kind of became “main stream”. Check out http://www.cghearth.com . maybe you want to write about us sometimes? Let me know

Hi shivya- love your blog. I am planning a trip for my family and wondered if you have suggestions of places that would be good for families. Looking for somewhere where we can immerse in a locale as Well as do some service. Not looking in india (because we have family there and they will want us to stay with them 🙂 or asia. maybe south america, europe, northern africa…?

Hi Shivya, thanks for the post – such an enlightening read! I’m planning on travelling through Amritsar and Rajasthan by myself, and I’d be keen to experience an offbeat side of both places if possible, and with a local travel company. Do you know of anyone that organises solo/ trips for 2 people in either of these locations?

Thanks in advance!

this is very inspirational, keep up the good work girl.

Very nice blog Thanks Also look at Kalap trust which is doing yeoman service in uttarakhand This is a remote place located about 8hrs from Dehradun in the Upper tons valley This is run by an NGO providing rural health and education services inthose villages Besides they have mobilised the rural youth and ladies to set up Homestays and trained them to conduct treks in the hills This will help them generate a livelihood where there is none today Rgds

Planning an international trip is complicated. these are the elements to consider..

Declan Halloran's family considered traveling to popular Algarve region spots Albufeira or Lagos in Portugal last summer, but he knew those cities would be hot and packed with British and Irish tourists.

Instead, he planned a trip to nearby Costa Vicentina, a wind-swept coastal area that's less touristy.

"We were the only Americans there," he said.

While exciting, international travel involves many considerations. Do you want to see Machu Picchu or the Great Wall of China or go on an African safari? Do you want to avoid other tourists? What can you fit in without rushing? And can you even afford your grand plans?

Fortunately, travelers departing from Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport will have more options. Last year, the airport's dominant carrier, Delta Air Lines, resumed service to Tokyo. Aer Lingus will resume service in April to Dublin after a four-year hiatus. Lufthansa will offer its first-ever service in Minnesota on June 4 with year-round flights between MSP and the airline's Frankfurt hub.

To help plan an ideal trip while keeping all of your priorities in mind, here is some expert advice to consider:

Travel agents said the majority of Minnesotans they help go to Europe for a week to two weeks. While information about those countries is widely available, and there are several nonstops from MSP airport, the agents are still busier than ever.

Linda Snyder, vice president of travel and retail services for AAA Minneapolis, has already started booking client trips to Europe for next year and the year after that. River cruises book up fast. You should reserve every tour, church and museum visit before departure, if possible.

"Ideally, you're planning a year ahead of time," she said. "That's not to say you can't plan three to six months out."

But if you do, you might have to make more compromises or spend more money.

A1 Travel agent Monique Delph books flights six to nine months before departure.

"I've seen the ticket price double closer to the trip from six months out," she said.

Check your cellphone coverage and consider texting and calling free via WhatsApp , a widely used international messaging app. You can pay extra to still use your plan's data coverage, just plan to use free Wi-Fi or purchase or rent a portable Wi-Fi to use while in the other country.

Wherever you go in the world, review the CDC guidelines for entry requirements and consult your doctor or a travel health clinic for any vaccinations or medications needed.

Also find out whether you will need to apply for a Visa to enter the country.

"You need to make sure your passport has six months of validity beyond the date you return. That's something people miss," Snyder said. "If you're going for a month, you should have six months left from when you come back. That's true for most places."

She also encouraged travelers to enroll in the STEP program so the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate knows of your trip in case of a natural disaster or other global event.

"It's a good safety measure," she said.

Money matters

Realistically, you'll likely spend more than you planned. But it's better to realize that sooner than later and start saving now.

"The biggest question is the budget, and there's usually some sticker shock," Delph said.

After paying for the flight and hotels, she recommended a minimum of $100 a day per person, but that can swing up or down. A luxury buyer or party animal might spend much more.

Delph recently booked a nine-night trip for a couple in central Paris. Including the flight and a 4½-star hotel, the cost is $5,850. A mother-and-daughter trip Delph booked to Rome and Florence for 10 nights during spring break was similar at $5,800.

Experts said the days of waiting for flight deals have passed, and travelers agreed.

"Last minute doesn't exist because of these algorithms," said globe hopper Noopur Curtis of Minnetonka, who often flies to Chicago in search of better travel options to India. "I've tried for the past two years and haven't found a deal."

As prices easily climb well more than $1,000 for a roundtrip to Europe, other locations farther afield are often even costlier. Traveling to Africa will be double a Europe trip from New York, said Georgina Lorencz, owner of African Travel Seminars.

When traveling to many countries, a combination of credit cards, an ATM card and cash to exchange is all you need but look into the specifics of your destination. Lorencz tells clients to bring a Visa or Mastercard and $500 to Africa. When exchanging for local currency, bring clean, newer bills and ask for the same. She recently tried to exchange some British pounds with the late Queen Elizabeth's image, but the currency exchanged declined them.

Timing is everything

Flight delays and changes are more common. Try to book the first flight of the day and build in extra time for travel even if it's not needed, such as staying near the airport before an international flight home.

Airlines flying in other countries often operate under stricter consumer rules and might offer refunds and compensation. So it's worth filing a claim for any trouble at the carrier's website.

Consider whether you want to go to your destination in its high season, which will be more expensive. For a first-time trip to Europe, Snyder recommended going in fall or winter when your money goes further, and crowds are more sparse. Want to go to the Olympics in Paris this summer? At this point, you'll need lots of money or lots of flexibility. Probably both.

"Another big question is, 'How many countries can we see in a week?'" Delph said. "If it's just a week, I would tell them to do one."

Be creative. Halloran's family sometimes stays at ski resorts in the Alps in summer that offer great hiking and rooms at half the price of ski season, said the University of Wisconsin freshman, whose side hustle is travel planning for friends and family. Michael Florey, a semi-retired Minneapolis attorney, suggested trying pricier spots like Michelin-starred restaurants at lunchtime and renting rooms at vineyards to see the countryside.

"You can try the wine, and don't have to worry about driving drunk," Florey said. "You can just go to your room."

Travel agents can help

Even with so much information available online, hiring a travel agent could still be a good option. Travel agents say they offer expertise, relationships and organization, such as when your trip involves multiple stops or you need to hire a trusted driver or guide abroad.

"Planning tours in advance and skip-the-line tickets, all of those are things travel professionals can help with," Snyder said.

They also may understand the local customs and hotel standards, which can vary widely.

"I still believe in travel agencies," Curtis said. "I have built travel agendas myself. That takes a lot of work. Travel agencies can do a lot of that work for you at a small premium."

Lorencz provides her clients going to Africa with a comprehensive 30-page guide with everything they need to know about preparing for travel and what to expect on the ground. She also works to make the trip efficient. Since many African restaurants cook food to order, Lorencz coordinates with them ahead of time so her travelers aren't waiting more than an hour for their meals.

"Imagine if you walk into the restaurant on your own," she said. "You would be sitting there for a while"

Pack strategically

Packing a large bag to check might be no problem if you're going to only one destination or on a cruise or guided tour. If you're taking buses and trains between multiple locations, think again.

"Sometimes you get to those cities, and the cab can't even get down the street, and you have to get out and roll your bag down cobblestones," Snyder said.

Another advantage of a carry-on is being able to keep the bag with you on a plane for peace of mind. Consider packing cubes to fit more in, taking fewer clothes and sending out laundry for longer trips.

"Always keep a small medicine kit," Curtis said. "Your Advil, something to stop diarrhea, and something to get you through a cold."

Study cultural norms

You might have to cover your shoulders and wear long skirts or pants to visit sights in many Islamic countries as well as many cathedrals in Europe.

Avoid using your left hand at the dinner table in Africa and Asia. A hand gesture like a thumbs up common in American culture is offensive in Africa. Be aware that several languages might be spoken in some countries and English might not be as familiar, particularly in remote or rural areas.

Lorencz recalled an appreciative traveler who attempted to hug a cooking class instructor in Morocco, but he found out it's a no-no in Islamic culture to touch a woman who's a stranger.

"I couldn't believe how fast she jumped out of the way," she said. "She was somebody's wife. She was older and more traditional. No, don't touch her."

Lena, our guide in Moscow was excellent. She was very knowledgable and could answer any question we had for her. We liked that she could pick up on our interests and take us places we might not have thought of to go. When we realized that one of the places we had chosen to see would probably not be that interesting to us, she was able to arrange entry to the Diamond Fund and the Armoury for us. Riding the Metro with Lena was a real adventure and a lot of fun. In Saint Petersburg we found Anna well versed in the history of the Tsars and in the Hermitage collection. Arkady in Veliky Novgorod was a very good guide and answered all of our questions with ease. Novgorod was perhaps a long way to go for a day trip, but we did enjoy it. Vasily was a great driver to have and kept us safe with good humour and skill. We enjoyed ourselves so much, my daughter says she is already planning to return. We would both have no hesistation to recommend ExpresstoRussia to anyone we know.

Just wanted to let you know that My grandson Bruno and I couldn´t have been more pleased with our week in Moscow (6/15 - 6/21). We were absolutely enchanted with the whole experience, including getting lost a couple of times in the Metro during our free time. Although both our guides (both Eleanas) were excellent, I would particularly commend the first one (she took us to the Tatiakov, the KGB tour, and to that beautiful cemetery where so many great Russian artists, authors, composers, musicians, militarists, and politicians are buried). Her knowledge is encyclopedic; and her understanding of today´s Russia as a product of its past was, for us, truly enlightening. I will be taking another tour in Russia, with my wife, within the next two or three years. I will be in touch with you when the time comes. Meanwhile, I will refer you to other potential visitors to Russia as I meet them.

Moscow, a City Like No Other

Moscow is Russia’s largest city with a population of between 12 and 13 million. It is also Europe’s largest city and when you visit Moscow, you can feel it. The layout and architecture of the city is eclectic, ranging from crooked, ancient streets and alleyways to wide, bustling boulevards, from medieval churches to Stalin skyscrapers and to modern, glass buildings towering over everything and of course in the center of it all is the Kremlin and the magnificent Red Square. Moscow is also home to a fantastic, efficient and very beautiful metro system – each station having its own special design. In fact, Express to Russia’s Moscow metro tours and excursions are some of our most popular attractions that we offer. On our Moscow tours, you will see this and more.

Moscow Kremlin in the times of Ivan III

Moscow Tours centering on Russian History

Moscow has a long and interesting history and has been the capital of Russia in many of its different iterations – capital of the Grand Duchy of Moscow , the Russian Empire and of course the Soviet Union (who could ever forget the Soviet Union?). Moscow, was founded in the 12th century by Prince Yuri Dolgaruki (Yuri of the long arms – he really did have long arms!). From that time on, it was home to the Russian Tsars until Peter the Great moved the capital to St. Petersburg in 1703. The city has survived invasions and sieges from the Mongols, the Tartars, the Poles, Lithuanians and Napoleon but has always persevered. Our Moscow tours will enlighten you on this great history and give you insights into Muscovites and their unique culture. Our Moscow tours show you what the city is like today but also brings to life the past. Moscow never seems to sleep and is bursting with energy. A Moscow tour with Express to Russia is truly the best way of getting to know Russia’s largest and most vibrant city.

Frequently Asked Questions From Our Travelers

What is the best time to visit moscow.

Any time of year is fine depending on what you plan to do. Summertime is pleasantly warm, ideal for exploring the city and its vibrant atmosphere, but Moscow will be much busier and accommodation is more expensive. Winter can be quite cold but beautiful nonetheless, and this is unproblematic if you intend to spend most of your trip in museums and galleries. There are also various festivals and events organised throughout the year. For more information about the best time to visit, read our guide

How many days are enough in Moscow?

If you plan your itinerary strategically and aren’t averse to a packed schedule, you can cover Moscow’s main sights over a long weekend. Most popular attractions are in the city centre, and the Moscow Metro allows you to cover much ground in a small amount of time. Ensure that your accommodation is fairly central and book tickets in advance, so that you can make the most of your days. For an informative and well-organised day out, check out our Moscow day tours with options to suit all interests.

Do they speak English in Moscow?

As Russia’s capital city, tourists are well accommodated in Moscow. There should be English-speaking staff in restaurants, bars, hotels, shops and attractions in tourist hotspots, and there are also English-speaking tourist police. Transport services have English translations on their maps and English announcements via intercom; alternatively, order taxis from the Yandex Taxi app (Russian Uber), though it’s unlikely that your taxi driver will speak English. If you get stuck and cannot communicate, it’s fine to use Google Translate.

Is it safe to travel to Moscow?

It is no less safe to travel to Moscow than to any European city if you exercise common sense and look after your belongings. As with every city some regions can be more unsavoury than others, but no tourist attractions are located there. The traffic in Moscow is notorious, so exercise caution when crossing roads. Do not take unlicensed taxis; book in advance or take public transport, which is widespread and perfectly safe. If you encounter any problems, look for the special tourist police who can help you. Moscow Holiday Packages

What makes Moscow worth a visit are it's colorful and remarkable structures and the warmth of the inviting capital city. Have a tour of the city which is generally known as the ‘Fire Square’.

Best time to visit

In summers, Moscow generally offers a warm climate along with a little downpour. It is a great time to roam around the city in light, cotton clothes and witness many exciting tourist attractions around you. A tour to the Red Square, St. Basil Cathedral, and Kolomenskoye museum on a nice sunny day would be perfect in Moscow city.

The New Year’s Eve in Moscow’s winter is a great deal and is worth witnessing in a visit to the Russian capital. Many games, contests, and Russian cultural traditions take place in Red Square area every year while it is covered in snow. Make sure to pack loads of warm clothes to beat the freezing temperature while you give a tour to Moscow during winters.

Best Way to reach

The one and only way to reach Moscow from India is by air. There are 5 airports in Moscow city out of which 3 are connected to international airports of cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Lucknow, and Bengaluru through flights.

‘Regulation of short-term stays, travel not within ministry purview’

Short-term stays not under our purview, says sarawak tourism minister, approval for sarawak’s two new deep sea ports.

Abdul Karim: Ministry working hard to draw more tourists to Sarawak.

Regulation of short-term rental accommodation and online travel agencies in Sarawak does not fall under Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Ministry, its minister says.

Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said the licensing of accommodation providers was under the local government while travel agencies were licensed by Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry at the federal level.

“We will look into unlicensed accommodation providers if the matter is really serious.

“We have discussed this but it is for the local authorities to look into this matter.

“As far as my ministry is concerned, we want to make sure that the number of visitors goes up and that those who come here feel happy with what we have to offer,” he told reporters in Kuching.

Abdul Karim was responding to Malaysia Budget and Business Hotel Association (MyBHA) president Sri Ganesh Michiel’s call for his ministry to assist budget hotel operators in Sarawak in ensuring business sustainability.

In a statement, Sri Ganesh said budget hotels would resort to raising room rates only if the authorities did not address threats to the industry.

He said unresolved issues included the failure to regulate online travel agencies and short-term rental accommodation operating without business licences that affected licensed hotel operators.

“We would like to emphasise that we have no intention of indiscriminately raising budget hotel prices.

“We will continue to support the state government’s ambition to attract a high volume of tourists, but the government must ensure that registered and licensed tourism or hospitality industry entrepreneurs are the ones benefitting from tourist arrivals,” added Sri Ganesh.

Abdul Karim said his ministry was working hard to draw more tourists to Sarawak, and this included organising over 200 events annually.

He said the increase in visitor arrivals would benefit the budget hotel industry, even at existing room rates, and advised against price increases.

“Don’t raise the rates when there are a lot of visitors; it will not help the industry.

“When there are so many tourists coming in, the occupancy rate will also increase.”
