Known for her unique Rockabilly sound and spectacular voice, Irish musician Imelda May is a truly rare talent in today’s musical landscape.

Imelda was born in Dublin in 1974 and developed an early love of Rock and Roll particularly the work of the likes of Buddy Holly and Gene Vincent who would influence her sound as she grew up. By 16 she was working the Dublin club circuit, picking up tips of the trade from fellow musicians and even occasionally being barred from her own gigs due to her young age.

Her professional career officially began in 2003 when she released her first album on Foot Tapping Records ‘No Turning Back’, first under her maiden name Imelda Clabby and then again under her married name. Following the album’s release she relocated to London with husband and guitarist Darrel Higham.

Her big break came with the follow up album, 2008’s ‘Love Tattoo’. This time, with the support of a Major label, the album hit number one in the Irish charts and caught the attention of UK music maestro Jools Holland. He invited her to join him on tour and after being impressed with the reaction, also got her to appear on his show ‘Later…With Jools Holland’. All of this helped Imelda’s talents to reach new ears and expand her fanbase.

Her third album ‘Mayhem’ hit number one in Ireland and number 7 in the UK and was a sure sign that Imelda was here to stay. She has even made waves in the US performing on shows like Jay Leno and Conan.

Live reviews

I'd never heard of Imelda May until a friend recommended her. Checked her out on You Tube and liked what I saw and heard. We managed to find some tickets to her sold out show at the Paradise Rock Club and had a blast. What a fun band to see live, especially at a small, general admission venue where you can dance. And they sure do make you want to move your feet. Neo rockabilly at it's best. Imelda has a great voice and stage presence. Her husband plays a mean guitar, capturing a true rockabilly flavor. The bass player banged away at the acoustic stand up all night and the horn player added a nice flavor to the mix. She threw in few quieter ballads as a counter point to the mainly uptempo repertoire, and ended the evening with nice nod to the Boston fans, doing a short version of the theme song to Cheers, which she sequed into a beautiful acoustic version of Blondie's Dreamin.

I liked them so much I'll be going to see them again in September at Lupo's Heartbreak Hotel in Providence, RI.

Imelda May is really something special. Her rockabilly sound is very unique. I haven't heard anything like it in years. I couldn't believe all of the young girls I saw in the audience - they were seriously into the music!

A lot of them were dressed like her and everything. Some of them were spot on. Imelda's voice is amazing! It's even better live than on her album. Absolutely beautiful. All in all, it was really great time. The crowd was really into it. Just about everyone knew the words to all of the songs, including me. I usually feel a bit foolish singing along because my voice is terrible. But I threw caution to the wind and just enjoyed the music.

The band she had backing her up was wonderful as well, from the trumpet to the bass. I don't think I could've asked for a better time. She puts on one hell of a show. I'd gladly go see her again anytime. Her version of Tainted Love was awesome, and a really nice surprise. Hope she comes around again very soon!

A quite different Imelda May performance from the last time I saw her live, about 3 years ago. The concert primarily consisted of songs from her new album (Life Love Flesh Blood), delivered by her new and expanded band. LLFB is a terrific album, packed with strong songs, and on the night Imelda and the band performed brilliantly. Highlights were It Should've Been You, The Girl I Used to Be, Black Tears but really every song was memorable.A richer, fuller sound than before and in my view even better. Terrific singer, great songs and superb band - if you get a chance go!!!

"It's impossible not to be swept away by the whirlwind of pounding percussion, rootsy guitar and ravenous vocals" UK's the guardian wrote.

I have been asking myself, why isn't she famous yet? The answer is clear, "when?" is the question, not "if" she would become famous.

She has a raspy voice and a very feminist way of singing rock'n roll. Does she make it worth it every cent of that concert? The answer is yes and you won't be disappointed.

The best part of the concert, the slow burners numbers: Gypsy in Me and Wicked Way and the cover of Dreamin (Blondie cover).

Tickets - $25. Parking - Free. Standing arms length from Imelda May... Priceless. We really enjoyed the concert. We wished it was a little cooler, but we learned that Ms. May requested the temperature be warmer. Oh well.

Ms. May did not disappoint. She was just as fun and sassy as we expected and her band was amazing!

The Park West was a perfect place for this concert. I would definitely see her again at this venue or a similar venue.

Imelda May took a crowd of people who came to see Elvis Costello and weren't really paying attention to fans! All around me I could here people talking about how she "blew them away." Picture a half empty arena with her as the back-up and people walking in to sit down with their drinks. You could see them with their mouths open in disbelief at how amazing she was.

Imelda and her band were OUTSTANDING!

Great show with masses of talent. Highlights were definitely mike Sanchez, Robert plant and Imelda! Shame about the rows of doughnuts who think it's ok to make you watch it through/ around their mobile phones - even after you ask them to move to the aisle out the way. Intimate, seated venues like this should throw these people out imho

We last saw Imelda May in concert a couple of years ago. She was very good then. This time she was superb. She rocked the up tempo numbers but her voice has a sweet poignancy when she sings ballads. Such a talent. A great rapport with the audience. Can’t wait for her next tour!

Interview: Imelda May talks love, lust and speaking her mind for good

imelda may irish tour 2022

It wasn’t meant to be a theme of her new album 11 Past the Hour, but Imelda May admits it just turned out like that. From the lusty lyrics of Just One Kiss — the single she released with the help of Noel Gallagher and Ronnie Wood — to the more nurturing Don’t Let Me Stand On My Own, a duet with her real-life boyfriend Niall McNamee, love in all its forms is explored among the tracks on this album which comes in the midst of a turbulent year.

For this Liberties belle, though, it’s a case of glass half full. ‘I’m the most excited,’ she says, of letting her new record loose on the public today. ‘Of any album I’ve made, this one is my favourite to date. I think any new album you release should be your favourite but this one definitely is because of what we’ve all been through. Sometimes the tough times that we go through make you appreciate the good times more.’

Today's top videos

Story continues below.

It’s fair to say that love has helped May overcome those hard times and despite having her tours cancelled due to the coronavirus, the vaccine rollout is bringing good news to the horizon. She has announced dates all over Ireland for May 2022 and she’s feeling positive, despite not being back on the road just yet.

Imelda May New Album 11 Past The Hour

‘There’s loads of positivity on this album,’ she tells me. ‘There’s a good balance I hope in there, things to think about.

‘I noticed after – it wasn’t a theme at the time when I was writing – but I noticed that every song is about love in some form, not necessarily romantic love.

‘Made To Love is about fighting for love, that it’s worth fighting for – about those people who fought and died for love and that we need to keep carrying that on.

Imelda May New Album

‘Don’t Let Me Stand On My Own is about mental health and that kind of supportive love, sticking with each other, holding each other up.

‘There are songs about lust, there are songs about nature and Mother Earth and how she’s feeling.

So it’s about loving in all its forms, it’s a balanced view of love in every way I think – and hope.’

Imelda May Niall MacNamee

There is, though, one song of love Imelda left off her latest album. Fans of her social media accounts would have seen a picture of the star by her mother Madge’s beside, clasping her hand when Imelda managed to get home to Ireland over Christmas. Madge is suffering from dementia and though Imelda has written a spoken word piece about her, there’s also a song that didn’t make it onto the album.

‘I wrote a song that my mam but I didn’t put it on the album because it was just way too emotional,’ she admits. ‘I don’t know what to do with it, but I thought I would wait for the right moment so I will see what I will do with it afterwards. Because I thought ‘I won’t be able to sing this on tour.’

‘I knew I wouldn’t be able to and also by the time I go on tour at this point,’ and she pauses to gather herself, ‘who knows, you know? anything the older I am much of be who I Her dad too, what the his daughters ‘they loving and a bad word ‘But there’s always a touch to my mother in everything that I do because I’m very much a product of her.’

Imelda May Niall MacNamee

In fact one of Imelda’s earliest memories is of her mother putting her into a pram and heading down to a protest, placing a placard in her little baby fingers.

of her up in were always didn’t know willing to ‘That’s the mother that I have,’ she says, laughing. ‘She showed me loads of love and she also showed me that you can do ‘So yes, anything you put your mind to. The older I get the more appreciative I am of my parents and how much of them is in me ? I wouldn’t be who I am or without them.’

Her dad Tony was always a feminist too, before Imelda even knew what the word meant, and pushed his daughters to aim for the sky.

‘They were just so artistic and loving and I never heard them say a bad word about anyone,’ she says of her parents as she was growing up in Dublin’s Liberties. ‘They were always accepting and if they didn’t know something they were willing to learn and it’s just phenomenal to have them.

And what a voice used, as it is, for all the right reasons, tackling subjects other musicians might tend to shy away from.

‘I was raised to speak my mind and that’s what I do,’ says Imelda. ‘Always but certainly on the last album and this album moreso than ever.

‘I always wrote honestly, but I kind of found a way of hiding it but on the last album and this one I don’t feel like doing that any more. It’s my album so if I can’t say what I want on my own album, then where can I?’ she says.

Imelda May

It can, she admits, make things awkward when it comes to doing interviews but she has to be true to herself and if that means putting everything out there, so be it.

‘As a writer you can’t approach a song wary, there’s no point in doing that. You have to write what you want. When I’m writing I’m not thinking about other people. It’s not selfish but it’s my moment for me when I write ? I love that process.

‘I love to write, it fills me. It nourishes me. Does that make sense? And it’s very cathartic for me as well to put down what’s in my mind and work on it and construct it and put it in a way that has art and beauty to it, hopefully. It’s something that I enjoy very much and it makes sense of what’s going on in my head a lot of the time.’

Sometimes that can be a hard path to tread. The reaction to her poem You Don’t Get To Be Racist And Irish has had a hugely positive response but she has also been getting daily abuse online since she put it on social media, so much so that she has had to report some of it to the authorities.

Imelda May

‘Since I put out the poem You Don’t Get to be Racist and Irish I have had daily abuse for ten months,’ she says of the messages she has received, some of which she reposts ‘just to show people what you get. I’ve also noticed that most people that message me about that poem haven’t actually read it, they think that I’m saying that all Irish people are racist and if you read the poem I’m not at all actually.

‘There’s a lot of hate out there, but I find I remind myself that sometimes the people that hate are just louder. I don’t think there’s necessarily more of them and I don’t think they are any stronger.

‘I think there are more lovers in the world and the love is stronger – that’s what keeps me going and trying to do the right thing.

‘I’m not trying to be a preacher, I’m a musician ? but as a musician I have to write what I feel. I’m not trying to change the world or anything like that I’m just writing from my perspective, which is the only way I can write. Music is a beautiful way to connect art in all its forms, the whole point of it is to connect. So I hope we do.’

Imelda May

There’s a long list of celebrity names collaborating with Imelda May on this album including Gallagher and Wood and also Miles Kane. And her pal Bono is always on hand to offer some advice too. It’s some list of people Imelda May has in her phone and while the rest of us might feel starstruck or nervous, Imelda doesn’t care who you are, as long as you are decent.

‘I take people as they come,’ she says. ‘I like nice people, good people, interesting people and I don’t mind who they are.

‘I’m lucky to have so many great friends, I’m attracted to talented people. And of course Bono and Noel and Miles and Ronnie, they’re extremely talented. I find them absolutely fascinating, but equally I have friends who are really talented and very interesting people who haven’t been successful, or have no desire to be.’

She tells me a story then about herself and Niall when they were just friends, meeting a guy cadging cigarettes on the street who invited them round to his bedsit to see the club art he was making. They went, of course, and drank tea and talked about creativity and the world.

Imelda May

‘We had the best night — he was such an interesting guy,’ she says.

‘I’m happy to meet good souls and good characters wherever I go and keep in touch with them. And then, some of them happen to be very famous and some of them aren’t. That’s just the way I am, I suppose.’

Speaking of Niall, he made a special appearance in the Just One Kiss video, even though the duet was sung with Noel Gallagher.

‘I needed a dirty little sexy rock’n’roll number to rev it up,’ Imelda says of the song’s inclusion on 11 Past The Hour. ‘So I kept the lyrics simple – it’s a lustful song of base emotions.’

Imelda May appears on the new album The Joshua Tree - New Roots. Pic: Getty

The chemistry between the pair flies off the screen and I have to ask how did they make the leap from friends to a romantic relationship?

‘He’s a charmer,’ May says, laughing.

And then, of course, there is their duet Don’t Let Me Stand On My Own, a beautiful song they wrote together at home (McNamee is both an actor and musician in his own right.)

‘The song we did together is about mental health and supporting each other and holding each other up. Because we have all had experiences of that in some way, either with ourselves or with somebody else.

Imelda May New Album

‘We don’t really work together, he has his own thing going on, and I have mine,’ Imelda says. ‘We’re not going out as a duo but over lockdown he was really, really kind if I had any live performances to do.

‘I was at home and I’d say ‘ any chance of playing guitar for me?’ because I’m a terrible guitarist and then ‘Would you mind playing guitar for me again?,’ she says laughing. ‘It was just him helping me out and he was very kind to do it.’

There is a real sparkle from Imelda May, in spite of the lockdown. She seems to be very happy with her lot, a busy mum, a loving relationship and, of course a new album.

‘Everything’s good, yeah,’ she says, with another sparkle. ‘I am very happy, I’m lucky.

‘I think lockdown and this pandemic has magnified a lot of things for a lot of people and it’s made me really try and focus on all the positives.

‘It’s easy to get overwhelmed by what’s going on so I like to focus on trying to change things that are in my power.

‘It’s good to value the simple the good things in life, and I think this pandemic has made us all very aware of the people that we love, because we missed them so much, and look forward to seeing them all again – which we will do.’

Globally revered Irish artist Imelda May has today announced her first major UK tour in over five years in support of her highly anticipated new album ‘11 Past The Hour’.

Superstar singer and songwriter Imelda’s sixth studio album ‘11 Past The Hour’ - her first new music in four years - is a record that brims with sensuality, emotional intelligence, spirituality and intuition, marking a new chapter for Imelda and showcasing her at her most authentic. With pals and collaborators like Ronnie Wood, Noel Gallagher, Miles Kane & Niall McNamee, and with inspired contributions from feminist thinkers and activists such as Gina Martin and Dr Shola Mos-Shogbamimu, the album is an invigorating blast of rock’n’roll, with a purpose.

Imelda says: “I cannot wait to see you all again, to dance and sing together, to connect and feel the sparkle in a room where music makes us feel alive and elevated for a while. A magical feeling we can only get from live music. Let’s go!!!!”

The Daily Mail’s 4-star album review on Sunday proclaimed “The whole album is crying out to be performed live. She could get a party started in a convent”.

Imelda May’s 2022 UK tour will see her perform songs from her new album ‘11 Past The Hour’ and the most celebrated tracks from her incredible repertoire, showcasing Imelda’s unique ability to evoke the purest of emotion using her voice as her sole instrument.

Her last headline tour in 2017 received rave reviews such as Metro’s “It was like the Irish stars had aligned for a perfect moment creating rock and roll gold” & The Evening Standard’s “May’s wild side was worth the wait, though her mature reinvention was the evening’s real triumph”.

Vladimir Putin has reportedly ordered rolling energy blackouts across Moscow as temperatures reach – 22C. The blackouts are said to cover the entire Moscow metropolitan area which has a total population of around 22 million. The order issued states that electricity is “not to exceed 12 hours per day” with the blackouts in place from January 14 through March 31 2024, according to  Ukraine  commentator Igor Sushko.

Sushko posted on X: “The entire Moscow metropolitan area, population 22 million, will have rolling blackouts of electricity “not to exceed 12 hours per day” from January 14 through March 31, 2024. – announced by the fascist state.”

It comes after a heating main ruptured at the Klimovsk Specialised Ammunition Plant in Podolsk, about 30 miles south of central Moscow, on January 4. As a result, tens of thousands of Russians are said to be without heat in their homes in the Moscow region due to subzero temperatures.

According to a map published by a Russian Telegram channel and circulated on various social media platforms, the affected areas include cities such as Khimki, Balashikha, Lobnya, Lyubertsy, Podolsk, Chekhov, Naro-Fominsk, and Podolsk.

Residents in Moscow, specifically Balashikha, Elektrostal, Solnechnogorsk, Dmitrov, Domodedovo, Troitsk, Taldom, Orekhovo-Zuyevo, Krasnogorsk, Pushkino, Ramenskoye, Voskresensk, Losino-Petrovsky, and Selyatino, are also experiencing power outages, according to other Russian media reports.

Power outages have been reported in St. Petersburg, Rostov, Volgograd, Voronezh, and Primorsky. Meanwhile, a huge fire t ore through a large warehouse  used by  Russia ’s largest online retailer south of St Petersburg on Saturday morning.

The blaze covered an area of 70,000 square meters, with 50,000 square meters of the Wildberries warehouse collapsing, according to  Russia ’s Emergency Situations Ministry. No casualties were reported.

Videos posted to social media appeared to show employees running down fire escapes and fleeing the scene. A video shot from a passenger jet flying nearby showed flames totally engulfing the warehouse, sending huge plumes of smoke into the sky.

Putin: We can better destroy our own grid ourselves…………………………………………………

And the hoarde just follows like blind idiots.

Vote for putler. He will cut your electricity bills for you.

12 hour a day blackouts for 10 weeks? Of course it will be back to normal a few days before the fake election. Perhaps we should send some drones to the north east and give them some of their own medicine….

What wonderful news. How many warmonger morons that are freezing their asses off and sitting in the dark are still for war? Instead of fixing the broken country, the idiots wage an expensive war.

You can bet your life that the area the siloviki live won’t suffer any power cuts.

Of course, not.

They still have warm feelings about killing Ukrainians and stealing their children. That should hold them over…..

they could always go to the front if they’re cold, it gets a bit hot there with the occasional blinding flash of light.
