Jason Derulo on Indian music: You guys have some of the best stuff in the world

Excited about his upcoming india visit, pop sensation jason derulo, who performs at time out 72 in goa, has the trip sorted in his mind — it is going to be ‘culture, music, architecture... and, of course, the food’..

What’s the best way to get an introduction to India than with a packed show in Goa at the peak of the Christmas-New Year season? That’s what Jason Derulo is getting, and he’s sure excited about it. The American singer-songwriter-dancer, known for hits such as If It Ain’t Love, Wiggle, Swalla, and Talk Dirty, is performing at the music fest Time Out 72 on December 27, and Indian food is at the top of his to-do list. In a telephone chat, Derulo tells us that he definitely will have naan and a thick curry.

For your first visit to India, what do you have in mind?

I am really interested about Indian cuisine and looking forward to gorging [myself] on the delicacies I will be offered. I don’t know much about India, so once I visit, I am looking forward to learning more about the culture, music, architecture... and, of course, the food. (Laughs)

What will be on your set list? Will you perform Swalla, Wiggle…

Of course! (laughs) Won’t it look wrong if I don’t play these songs? I will be like mad if I am there and I don’t perform my favourite numbers. So [my playlist] is going to have my hits. There is going to be a big party [at the music fest] that will witness performances by big musicians from around the world. And there will be a variety of audience members. So I will make sure I keep the party going.

Any particular place that you’re planning to visit or a dish you’d love to taste?

I definitely have to have naan bread with curry. I mean, a nice thick curry. And, suggestions about must-visit [destinations] and food are welcome.

What are your expectations from your Indian fans? How much do you interact with them via social media?

I am looking forward to having loads of fun. Well, it’s hard to say who is Indian and who is not. I don’t necessarily know who I am speaking to; I just enjoy the conversations.

You’ve been delivering one hit after another. And expectations go a notch higher every time. How do you deal with it?

I cannot worry about expectation and pressure, I just focus on my work and make music the way I wanna make [it]. I think people should always own up their stuff. For me, making a better song than what I made last, and having fun while doing it, works. I don’t want to stress myself unless it’s necessary. Making a song is usually an emotional roller-coaster for me. So I keep it simple and don’t worry about whether it will be a big hit or not.

And what about low points?

I deal with low points like everyone else would; I take it with a grain of salt. Sometimes it’s me turning to music. Also, I have a supportive family and that helps every time. Then I have my fans... I head to them and that instantly makes me happy. I consider my fans as my family.

Do you listen to Indian music? Any plans of collaborating with any artists?

I do look at the Indian music charts. You guys have [an] intricate music scale and some of the best stuff in the world, so I like listening to that. I might not have [an artist’s] name in mind but I do enjoy listening to them online whenever I get time. It’s so different, so close to the culture.

Regarding collaboration, I can’t really talk about them right now, as they are all surprises. But I do have to tell you that I am releasing an album titled 777 in February. I have a song coming up shortly.

What keeps you occupied when you are not creating music?

I love watching movies and TV series. It’s my favourite time pass when I am at home. I also love writing. Not just writing in general, but am also penning some screenplays for films at the moment. This has been my new pastime for two years.

I've been to many concerts, but I've never enjoyed it as much as I did in Jason Derulo. It was an incredible show and I would repeat it a thousand times more.

If you have the opportunity, you should go, you will really love it for sure. He is a singer and an stunning dancer. He's dances will leave you amazed. He is so sexy!!!

If I have the opportunity to repeat, I will do it without a doubt. LOVE YOU JASON. He and his show is AMAZING.

Jason Derulo On The Indian Artist He Wants To Work With & More

Global hitmaker and the king of Tiktok, Jason Derulo talks to HELLO! about his love for music, how fatherhood changed him and his upcoming book…

HELLO! : Welcome to Mumbai! Please tell us what you love about India.

Jason Derulo: “First, how incredible the culture is! You go to a lot of different countries, but when you come to India, you know that you are here... The culture is so beautiful. The food is also so incredible — it’s probably my most favourite cuisine in the world. Then there’s the Indian scale. In other countries, you have a very different scale in music, but the one in India has a lot of added notes. It makes for a very, very beautiful voice that we’re not used to in the US.”

H!: You just sang live at the Indian Premier League. How was the experience?

JD: “Oh, I had a great time! It was fantastic. I sang a lot of songs for about 50 minutes! (Laughs) I have a lot of incredible fans out here. I didn’t know whether a lot of them knew who sang those songs. Hopefully, it was a moment where I could connect the dots for them and help them put a face to the voice behind the numbers, let them know it’s been me singing all the familiar tunes they’ve heard. (Laughs)”

H! : Back home, you have your fifth studio album on the way. What can you tell us about it? Does it have any fun collabs with other artists?

JD:   “On this album, there’s a very cinematic portion to it. I can’t announce what that is just yet, but it’s an experiential album and has a very new concept. It does have collabs, but I can’t tell you yet! You’ll have to wait for it!”

H!: When is it going to drop?

JD: “That remains to be seen! (Smiles)”

H!: You’re also about to debut a book this June, Sing Your Name Out Loud: 15 Rules For Living Your Dream . How was the writing experience, and what’s the most important message readers can take away from its pages?

JD: “I’ve been really inspired and reinvigorated by writing the book. Sometimes, when you know things and reinforce them by saying them out loud, or by teaching someone, it kind of brings those rules and things you know to the forefront. So I feel like it’s given me this newfound energy. I don’t know whether there’s one most important rule in this book. It was hard enough trying to whittle it down to 15! (Laughs) But I really do believe that the book is powerful. It’s even helped me in a lot of ways!”

H!: What continues to motivate you as an artist?

JD: “The love for music... The love for creation... I love creating things from nothing, and music has always been my number one love. So my favourite thing to do is to write songs and perform them. I don’t really need anything else to push me, besides that.”

H!: What’s your recipe for success in the music industry?

JD: “I’m never complacent. I’m never satisfied with where I am and constantly try to grow, change and morph. Whenever I reach a destination, I change the destination so I never feel like I’ve arrived somewhere. And I think that’s the biggest failure for a lot of artists who feel like they’ve made it and then lose the hunger they had, starting out. They forget there’s another young artist that wants it just as bad, one who has that hunger. So you can be out the door just as fast as you get there. I’ve watched a lot of artists come and go. I didn’t let my career fall to the wayside. Some artists surpassed me, but it’s true that it’s really tough to have longevity in the music business, or any craft. Especially music because there are very few slots and not a lot of known artists are killing it all the time.”

H!: Which Indian artist would you love to work with?

JD : “Oh, that’s a tough one. There are so many talented artists here. But if I had to pick one, it would be the rapper, King!”

H! : How did becoming a father change you?

JD: “I want to be better for my son, Jason King. I think the biggest change is that now, everything is for him. My entire life, it was always about trying to get myself to the next level, what I’m going to do next, or how I’m going to better myself. Now, it’s about how I’m going to do that for him. How I’m going to give him the right opportunities and make sure he gets the right amount of time and love. I want to make sure he understands a sense of family. I grew up in a very close, tight-knit family, and I want him to feel the same kind of love. I had a great upbringing and didn’t need very many friends because I had so much family around. I hope I can give him the same experience in life.”

H!: What’s a little known fact about you?

JD:   “That I can cut hair really well! In fact, I’ve cut my own hair for my look right now!”

H!: How do you love to unwind?

JD : “First let me ask: How old are the people who read HELLO!? (Laughs)”

H! : Thirties and up...

JD: “Ah, ok. Then to answer your last question, I have a little drink, tune in to Netflix and watch a movie. It’s my favourite thing to do! And definitely eat some Indian food!”

H! : What’s your go-to Indian dish?

JD: “Chicken Tikka Masala!”

H!: We love the colour of your hair right now. What made you choose blue?

JD: “Oh, I just woke up one day and was like... blue!”

Jason Derulo To Embark on ‘Nu King World Tour’ in February

Five years separate Jason Derulo from his last official global outing (the ‘ 2Sides World Tour ‘), but the wait for his next international jaunt is set to come to a close in just a few weeks thanks to the ‘Nu King World Tour.’

Designed to support the February 16 -due new album ‘ Nu King, ‘ his first studio effort since 2015’s ‘ Everything is 4,’   the worldwide trek is set to kick off with a stop in Stockholm on February 22 before touching down in Paris, London, Dublin, Frankfurt, Munich, and more before wrapping up its European leg in Zurich on March 29 .

If you were a teenager in the 2010s, Jason Derulo probably holds a special place in your heart. The R&B pop singer who brought us bangers like ‘Ridin’ Solo’, ‘Trumpets’ and ‘Watcha Say’ was the soundtrack to plenty of parties, pre-drinks and bedroom dances. You know you can’t just say his name, you have to croon it. 

So if you’re a big Derulo fan, you’ll probably know that Jase is making a big comeback this week as he brings his ‘Nu King’ world tour to London. The show is a surefire to bring slick choreography, ever-so-smooth vocals and a healthy dose of nostalgia. If you’re headed to the gig, here’s everything you need to know.

Jason will take to the O2 Arena’s stage tomorrow, on Wednesday March 6.

Rosamund Pike has been taking over New York City this month—one stylish event after the next. The actor (who recently navigated a busy awards awards season , thanks to her unforgettable role in Saltburn) made her press rounds at several buzzy events, recapping all of her personal highlights for Vogue . On the lineup? There was the Brooklyn Museum’s Brooklyn Artists Ball, the Badass Art Woman Awards, and Christian Dior’s pre-fall 2024 presentation held on Monday evening.

On April 9, Pike attended the Brooklyn Artists Ball , which is the Brooklyn Museum’s largest fundraising event. “I loved this event because during dinner, I had a chance to talk at length to Maria Grazia [Chiuri] and Karishma Swali,” says Pike, adding that that chatted about their shared passion for embroidery and their work furthering opportunities for women through the Chanakya school in India. The star also mingled with fellow guests such as Mickalene Thomas, Naomi Watts, and Rebecca Hall, and took in an electric performance. “Little Simz rocked the room," she says of the British rapper. "I loved that she got us all up dancing; I love it when a room starts to move, and people let go. I was one of the first on my feet!”

The following day, the star also attended the 2024 Badass Art Woman Awards at the Angel Orensanz Foundation; The event aimed spotlight women who are pushing culture, art, and design forward, and included honorees such as Thomas, Chiuri, Swali, and Jane South. “This evening celebrated women who get shit done together through dedication, shared brain space, and exchange,” says Pike. “I met jewelers, artists, curators, and people who teach artists the business of art. It was inspiring.”

As though the two parties were not enough excitement, Pike also made time in her schedule to attend Dior's pre-fall collection runway show on Monday evening, hosted at the Brooklyn Museum. A longtime-wearer of Dior, Pike was thrilled to take in the fashion house’s elegant new assortment in-person. “Dior [is] a name you associate with impeccable design and craftsmanship,” says Pike, adding that “Maria Grazia is a true feminist and her decisions are intentional, detailed and honest. I love the way her clothes move, whether they are holding you or flowing from you.”

Pike’s favorite looks from the Marlene Dietrich-inspired collection? “I loved the elegantly-cut short velvet shorts with beautiful suiting on top,” says Pike. “There were beautiful sexy oversized shirts, with nonchalance and attitude, paired with wide slouchy trousers that flowed. And the deconstructed menswear; I saw a suit like mine in dark black velvet—so gorgeous.”

Of course, Pike had to bring her own statement look to the front row. “An audience at a fashion show is a funny crowd,” says Pike. “People are more on edge. They are an audience who are also being watched, which is a complicated idea. I need to make my look a little bit like a performance for that reason—I need to find a character I believe in, and channel myself through her.”

If Pike’s Dior show look was a character, it was certainly a sophisticated one. Styled by Leith Clark, the star’s all-black suit channeled Dior’s iconic New Look silhouette in a fresh, modern way. “I like a look that encompasses elegance with an edge,” says Pike. “I fell in love with the proportions of the suit, and the way the jacket kicks out. Elegance is underrated in our times; I prize it highly.” The star did have fun with her accessories. She punctuated the look with a white Lady Dior bag and an unexpected shoe combo. “I chose to wear socks with my high platform shoes, a little wrinkled like I used to do at school when I knew I was supposed to pull them up straight,” she says. “The socks undercut the severity of the look. You know this person is playful as well as strict, a little deshabillé in her elegance!”

Now that Pike’s whirldwind fashion tour of New York is over, she'll be getting back to film work. “I have recently made an experimental film called Hallow Road with Babak Anvari—a treasured, close-knit experience,” says Pike. “And I have just completed an epic season three of The Wheel of Time . I have been so excited by the work we created this season. We have just returned from a very exciting and demanding location shoot which will really deliver for fans of the show.”
