John Anderson

Hoeing orange trees was less than ideal, and so John Anderson took a gig as a plumber’s helper. The pay was alright and the work was steady, but music pulled at Anderson’s 17-year-old heart, and you had to be 21 to play, sing, or drink in Central Florida honky-tonks. Anderson left his home — a magical kingdom until Walt Disney put Cinderella’s Castle on the land that God meant for fathers and sons to hunt turkeys together — and headed 700 miles northwest, to Nashville.

It was the summer of 1972, when songwriting legends walked the streets and pounded the pinball machines. Anderson wanted in, even if it meant living on wages that didn’t provide for essentials like bait and shotgun shells. He took a job as a construction laborer, working on a newfangled building called the Grand Ole Opry House.

Not long after taking the job, he got a raise: They raised him up to the roof, where he thought about how the Nashville wind blows cold and where he stared down at a big, deep hole, with rebars sticking up. That hole would soon become a stage, and that stage was where Anderson wanted to be.

Turns out, he made it. It was holy hell, but he made it to the Opry stage and far beyond. He made it with a voice that was traditional enough to make Emmylou Harris wonder if Anderson might be a distant relative of Lefty Frizzell, yet that was, and is, instantly identifiable. He made it with original music that landed him in the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame, and with radio hits including chart-toppers “Swingin,’” “Straight Tequila Night,” “Wild and Blue,” “Black Sheep,” and “Money in the Bank.”

Before Ricky Skaggs, George Strait, and Randy Travis were household names, John Anderson was Nashville’s young and hard-charging traditionalist, devoted to extending the legacies forged by Haggard, Jones, and Cash, and loathe to compromise when he knew he was right. And, when it came to making music, he knew he was right.

“Back then, it seemed like there wasn’t a whole lot of real country music, the way I think of it,” Harris said. “Then along came John Anderson: John was doing this, and he was all by himself.”

Anderson signed with Warner Bros. in 1976, and set about making music that would gain notice from legends. Haggard heard him early on, and invited him on the bus for a heart-to-heart.

“He said his guitar player, Roy Nichols, brought him a 45 of ‘Your Lying Blue Eyes,’ Anderson remembers. “He said, ‘I’ve loved you ever since.’ But then he looked me in the eye and said, ‘Do you love this, son?’ ‘Yessir, I really do.’ No, do you really, really love it.’ I said, ‘Yessir. Hell, I’m talking to Merle Haggard and I can’t really stand myself right now, but I really love it.’ We went on to to 40 years of being buddies, Me and Merle.”

At the time “Your Lying Blue Eyes” came out, Anderson was playing with house bands around the South. The song became his first Top 20 hit, and soon the name “John Anderson” on a roadside club sign was enough to fill up a parking lot with Trans Ams and pickup trucks. A string of hits ensued, with “1959,” “Chicken Truck,” “I Just Came Home To Count the Memories” and “Would You Catch a Falling Star” leading up to his breakthrough, the John Scott Sherrill-penned “Wild and Blue.” That song was the title track of an album that included Anderson’s first million-selling single, “Swingin,’” written with old friend and running partner Lionel Delmore.

Country great John Anderson has been added to the line-up for Outlaw Country Cruise 7, which sets sail from February 21-27 next year. Organized by Stevie Van Zandt’s Renegade Circus and Sixthman, the Norwegian Pearl sails from Miami to Great Stirrup Cay, Bahamas and Cozumel, Mexico, offering six nights of rock-edged country. Texas honky tonk favorite Joshua Ray Walker is also new in the line-up, which features the notable return of Tex-Mex rock‘n’roller Joe King Carrasco with none other than Sir Douglas Quintet and Texas Tornados co-founder Augie Meyers. Previously announced attractions include the Mavericks, Lucinda Williams, Steve Earle & The Dukes, Ray Wylie Hubbard, Old 97’s, Kathleen Edwards, Carlene Carter, Linda Gail Lewis, Bill Kirchen, Elizabeth Cook, the Waco Brothers, Supersuckers, and more.

The Norwegian Pearl offers five unique venues which will stage an array of special performances, unique collaborations, exclusive tribute shows, and recordings of SiriusXM Sessions at Sea, hosted by artists and SiriusXM Outlaw Country DJs Steve Earle, Elizabeth Cook, and Mojo Nixon.

Organizers promise that the seventh Outlaw Country Cruise will be “the most exhilarating cruise vacation ever.” Also on board are a Pool Deck with multiple hot tubs, the Pearl Club Casino, Mandara Spa, Body Waves Fitness Center, Sports Court, and more. There will also be shore excursions in Great Stirrup Cay, Bahamas and the island of Cozumel, Mexico.

Carena Liptak’s review of the Anderson tribute album for Holler notes: “Though each of these marquee artists lends their signature sound to their Anderson tribute performance, at no point does the song feel overwhelmed by the performer’s own stardom…it’s mainly due to some stellar song matchmaking by producer Dan Auerbach and his partner in the project, David “Fergie” Ferguson.

“Each artist was selected for the way their musicality overlaps with Anderson’s; as a whole, the diversity of the project is a tribute to his dynamic artistry.”

An Acoustic Evening with John Anderson

An Acoustic Evening with John Anderson

Sunday, September 24, 2023

7:30pm | Doors open 6:30pm

John Anderson pushed himself to complete his vocals for  Years , telling producer Dan Auerbach, “Let’s get everything because I might not wake up.”

It’s not an overstatement. In a risky procedure a few months earlier, when anesthesia was used, Anderson was told by doctors that he’d died on the operating room table. His wife told him that it had happened three times. That knowledge weighed heavily on the legendary country singer while writing and recording  Years  because he knew that his next appointment – just a few days after the sessions — would require the same anesthesia.

Remarkably, Anderson kept his health crisis a secret from his touring band and the music industry, and even now he prefers not to get into all of the details. However, his recovery has become his testimony.

During his period of recovery, Anderson got a phone call out of the blue from Auerbach, who was simply calling as a fan, inspired by a conversation with David Ferguson (co-producer) about great singers. When Anderson later met them both in person at Auerbach’s Easy Eye Sound studio in Nashville, they clicked as a unit immediately. On the spot, Anderson – a Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame inductee — accepted an invitation to write the next day.

That first co-write yielded “Years,” an emotional centerpiece of the album sung from the perspective of a man with some miles on him.

3 Reasons Why Jonathan Smith Hire Will Work For Michigan State Football

© Nick King/Lansing State Journal / USA

3 Reasons Why Jonathan Smith Hire Will Work For Michigan State Football

Even the seemingly perfect hire can sometimes go awry, but here are three reasons why Michigan State football's hire of Jonathan Smith will work out well for the Spartans...

  • Author: Matthew Lounsberry

In this story:

As usual, there will be several new head coaches at new programs across college football at the start of the 2024 season.

These changes have come for various reasons, whether they be a former coach retiring, moving on to the NFL or a new college football program, a coach being fired for lack of performance or, in Michigan State's case, a lack of performance on top of an embarrassing scandal.

MSU's move to hire Jonathan Smith away from Oregon State was met with almost exclusively position reviews from those in the industry, with many arguing it may have been the best hire of this past coaching cycle. With that in mind, here are three reasons why the Smith hire will work out great for MSU.

1. Smith is a proven program-builder

When Smith was hired at Oregon State in 2018 to replace Gary Anderson, his alma mater was in a tough spot, having gone 7-29 over the prior three seasons. It took a while for Smith to right the ship, as the Beavers went 2-10 in his first season, 5-7 in Year 2 and then 2-5 in the COVID-shortened 2020 season.

After that, however, Smith reeled off three straight winning seasons (7-6, 10-3, 8-4) from 2021 through 2023. That 10-win season in 2022 saw Oregon State finished with the No. 17 ranking in the country, the first time in 10 years the Beavers had finished ranked in the national polls, and their highest final ranking since finishing in the Top 5 in 2000 (when Smith started at quarterback for OSU).

It took a while for Smith to turn things around in Corvallis, but the head coach had a mostly steady upwards projectory at his alma mater.

2. Smith is an offensive coach

Being an offensive coach isn't a prerequisite for success. After all, former MSU head coach Mark Dantonio was a defensive guy and he led the Spartans to new heights in the 2010s. On the flip side, MSU's last offensive head coach — John L. Smith — was an abstract failure in East Lansing.

With that history understood, it's also important to understand the recent changes to both college football as a whole and the Big Ten. The "three yards and a cloud of dust" days are long past in this conference. MSU doesn't have the benefit of winning with just one side of the ball the way Iowa has done for the past several years.

The Spartans are still going to play a physical brand of football behind Smith and offensive coordinator Brian Lindgren, make no mistake. However, MSU fans can expect to see more creativity and just a flat-out better scheme than what they had to endure under former offensive coordinator Jay Johnson. On the other side of the ball, I rellay like Smith's hire of Joe Rossi as defensive coordinator as well. It may take time, but the Spartans should have a good balance on both sides of the ball in the years to come.

3. Smith knows how to win with less

Let's be frank here — MSU does not recruit at the level of Ohio State, Oregon, Penn State, USC and Michigan in football. That's just a fact.

Former MSU head coach Mel Tucker and his staff landed some big fish in recruiting over the past few years, but his recruiting classes lacked depth, and MSU's program lacked development. That's the opposite of what Smith and the staff he brought to East Lansing are known for.

It remains to be seen how well Smith will recruit in East Lansing. The resources he'll have access to at MSU will be vastly superior to the ones he had at Oregon State, so his staff may surprise on the trail. However, it's hard to expect MSU's classes to routinely rank in the Top 15 in recruiting.

That's not as big of a deal for Smith and Co. as it would be for other coaches however, because they have proven to be excellent developers of under-recruited guys. That's the exact formula that Dantonio used to win championships in East Lansing, and Smith is in the same mold. At Oregon State, Smith's rosters were never as star-studded as those of Oregon, USC and the other major programs of the former Pac-12, but the Beavers could still go toe-to-toe with those programs by the end of his tenure. That's what MSU needs its head football coach to be able to do in the Big Ten.

The Michigan State Spartan Football Spring Green and White Game (Spring Showcase) will be held at the High Cathedral of the Spartan Nation, Spartan Stadium, on April 20, 2024, at 2 p.m.

If you purchase an independently reviewed product or service through a link on our website, Rolling Stone may receive an affiliate commission.

Quick Answer: Stagecoach tickets have sold out, but fans can still find available passes on sites like StubHub and Vivid Seats .

Country music fans, mark your calendars. Eric Church, Miranda Lambert, and Morgan Wallen are set to headline California’s Stagecoach country music festival this year, which returns to the Empire Polo Club at the end of April. Stagecoach tickets have officially been on sale for months, with general admission and weekend passes sold out on the fest’s website. Don’t want to miss out on the action? Here’s what you need to know to buy sold-out Stagecoach tickets online, plus the artists and bands rocking the desert that weekend.

Where to Buy Stagecoach Tickets Online: 3-Day Passes, VIP Tickets, GA Tickets

As with a lot of festivals, general admission and VIP passes for Stagecoach have seemingly sold out online, including the Corral Standing Pit and Rhinestone Saloon passes. Right now, you can join Stagecoach’s waitlist if passes open up. But that’s not the only place you can score 2024 Stagecoach tickets. You can find three-day passes and single-day tickets on a variety of ticket reseller sites, including Vivid Seats and StubHub .

Buy Stagecoach Tickets on StubHub

If you’re still looking for last-minute three-day passes to Stagecoach, you might try looking on StubHub . The ticket site currently has several available general admission tickets available, starting at $416 a piece for a three-day pass, and as much as $500 each for Friday night only. It’s worth noting that you may end up paying more than face value on resale sites, and we recommend comparing prices to other sellers if you don’t have any luck after joining the waitlist.

Buy Stagecoach Tickets on Vivid Seats

Vivid Seats often has festival passes available, even when shows initially sell out. The site currently has Stagecoach passes to buy for all three days or single days. We spotted three-day GA passes starting at $461 at the time of this writing. Pro tip: Rolling Stone readers can use our exclusive promo code RS2024 to save $20 if you spend $200 or more for a first-time purchase on Vivid Seats.

Buy Stagecoach Tickets on SeatGeek

Another site that offers Stagecoach passes is SeatGeek . Like the other shops on this guide, SeatGeek currently has both three-day and single-day tickets available to shop on its site. Three-day passes are currently on sale for about $500 a piece, while single-day tickets for Friday’s shows are going for around $518 for Friday, $723 for Saturday, and $676 for Sunday. If you want to score a small discount on your tickets, fans can use the promo code ROLLINGSTONE10 to save $10 off eligible first ticket purchases over $250.

Can You Livestream Stagecoach 2024 Online?

Nothing compares to seeing your favorite country artists and bands play live in the desert. But if you can’t swing the 2024 Stagecoach schedule or missed out on tickets, you might still be able to watch some of the music fest’s lineup from home. Fans can tune into the Stagecoach livestream when it airs on Prime Video later this month.

Who’s Headlining Stagecoach 2024? Schedule, Lineup

Church’s fans will get the chance to see the star for his headlining set on the first night of the music festival. Lambert will headline the Mane Stage Saturday night, with Wallen wrapping up the weekend as Sunday evening’s headlining act. Stagecoach 2024’s lineup also includes acts including Post Malone, Willie Nelson, Jelly Roll, Elle King, Leon Bridges, Hardy, Bailey Zimmerman, Dwight Yoakam, Megan Moroney, The Beach Boys, Clint Black, Hailey Whitters, Charley Crockett, as well as Nickelback, Diplo, and Wiz Khalifa.

When Is Stagecoach 2024?

The annual Stagecoach country music festival rides into the Empire Polo Club grounds in Indio, California, from April 26 to 28, 2024. The site is also home to Coachella, which also runs over two separate weekends this month. In other words, if you want to go to Stagecoach, don’t forget to book your hotel ahead of time. You can check available hotels near the festival on Expedia , Hotels.com , and Skyscanner now, though rooms tend to book up quickly.

Take a walk in Zariadye park: one of the coolest things to do in Moscow after visiting Red Square

Zaryadie Park is just a 10-minute walk from St. Basil’s Cathedral, so it’s easy to include in your itinerary if you’re going to visit Moscow in 2 days. From its heights, you can see the red walls of the Kremlin. But, the most impressive point of view is the platform which overlooks the Moskva river. A must see! And clearly one of the coolest things to do in Moscow!

  • Open 24 hours a day
  • Good to know! Park Zaryadye is also a place to visit in Moscow in winter. Find out more here: What to do in Moscow in winter?

Visit the Moscow Kremlin

Visit Kremlin is on top of things to do in Moscow. A place of power for centuries, the Kremlin then shows us a whole different image when viewed from the inside. If you want to visit Moscow in 2 days, the Kremlin is certainly one of the must-see places in Moscow.

  • Opening hours : Daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., except Thursday.
  • See our blog post about visiting the Moscow Kremlin

Moscow Kremlin: skip-the-line tickets and 8 things not to miss

Visit the Cathedral of Christ the Savior

This impressive Moscow Cathedral is the seat of the Russian Orthodox Church. It is a must see if you visit Moscow in 2 days and clearly one of the things to do in Moscow. The Cathedral of Christ the Savior was first built in 1883 in memory of Russia’s victory over Napoleon’s Grand Army. Then in 1931 Stalin ordered its destruction. It was then rebuilt again (identically) only in 2000.

  • Where? Ulitsa Volkhonka 15. At the foot of the Kropotkinskaya metro station.
  • Opening hours . Daily: 10: 00-17: 00, except Monday: 13: 00-17: 00
  • Free entry (some closing restrictions, for example a short)

Good to know! In orthodox religious places, one must avoid excessively uncovered clothing. Women should cover their heads. After visiting the Cathedral of Christ the Savior, you can explore Bolotny Island and Gorky Park. This is one of the routes our guide to Moscow.

Cathedral of Christ the Savior

The old Krasny Oktyabr factory: one of the coolest things to do in Moscow

If you cross the Moskva River by a pedestrian bridge which is located just in front of the Cathedral of Christ the Savior, you will enjoy a beautiful view of the city and at the same time you can discover Balchug Island. Furthermore, if you want to visit Moscow in 2 days, you can include this island in your itinerary between the cathedral and Gorky park. Here is the old confectionery factory Krasny Oktyabr, which has gradually turned into a fashionable micro-district. There are then some elements of street art, cafes and restaurants and some Moscow bohemian side. At the end of the island you can see a gigantic 98-meter-high monument dedicated to the Russian reforming tsar Pierre The Great.

Good to know! You can find on this island are the trendiest nightclubs in Moscow. On weekends, there are taxi caps after midnight so there are so many people. On the other hand, if you go there in winter and during the day, the island is quite empty and less interesting to see.

Gorky Park is one of the TOP places to visit in Moscow, because it allows you to better understand the life of the locals and their rhythm. In fact, it’s a huge entertainment park. For example, in winter there is a giant ice rink and in summer – free dance or yoga lessons, sandy beaches for playing volleyball, an outdoor cinema. So, like the locals, have a Stakantchik (ice cream or cooked corn), and enjoy the atmosphere of the place: that’s one of the interesting things to do in Moscow to discover the city.

  • Where? Krymsky Val 9. 20 minutes’ walk from Krasny Oktyabr, along the quays.

Sparrow Hill and Moscow State University

The Sparrow Hill, Vorobiovy Gori in Russian, is the highest point in Moscow. It is rather known to Russians, but less to travelers. A nice view on Moscow opens from the hill, and in particular on the Luzhniki Stadium. In addition, on the hill itself is the Moscow State University: an impressive skyscraper from the Soviet era.

  • How to get there? By bus T7 (35 min) from Oktyaborskaya station, near Gorki Park. By metro (Vorobiovy Gorki station) + climb the hill on foot. On foot along the Moskva along the Gorky Park (1h30) + climb in funiculars.

Good to know! It is possible to cross the Moskva river by funicular. We actually tested it and it was pretty cool! That is one of our favorite things to do in Moscow!

What to do in Moscow

What to do in Moscow in 3 days?

If you are going to visit Moscow in 3 days, it would be interesting to dive into the Soviet era which strongly marked the country and the city. After the Bolshevik Revolution, the capital was transferred from Saint Petersburg to Moscow, in order to mark the change of power. Moscow then became the world showcase for communist ideology. Here are the best things to do in Moscow for 3-day-trip!

VDNKh, visit Moscow of the Soviet era

VDNKh is a large exhibition center in the north of Moscow, where there are still several striking witnesses of the USSR. The most interesting are the Museum of Cosmonauts and the Statue of the Worker and the Kolkhozian , which will certainly impress you with its size!

Visit

GULAG History Museum

The explanations of the museum are very well done. We really have the feeling of going back in time. If you are going to visit Moscow in 3 days and you are interested in history and this subject in particular, I recommend this museum. Visit the GULAG History Museum is one of the most interesting things to do in Moscow.

Discover the Patriarche Pounds district

It’s a nice neighborhood in Moscow where you can come across rather affluent locals, but not necessarily very bling-bling. Take a walk in this area is really a cool thing to do in Moscow! In addition, the Ponds of Patriarch is one of the places of Bulgakov’s novel “Master and Margarita”. As this is an interesting area to see, we have included it in a walking tour of Moscow. The route ends at the Moscow Kremlin, which is very convenient, because you will be able to visit Moscow in 3 days by optimizing your trips.

What to visit in Moscow in 4 days: TOP things to do in Moscow in 4 days

If you want to visit Moscow in 3 days, you will already see a lot of things. On the other hand, if you stay one more day, you have plenty to do! The Novodevichy Convent, the Tchistie Proudy district and the Izmaylovo Kremlin are very good candidates for you, if you are going to visit Moscow in 4 days.

Visiting Novodevichy Convent in Moscow

The Novodevichy Convent is one of the most brilliant examples of Russian architecture, according to UNESCO. This beautiful complex was built in 1524 and today consists of the convent, but also of a cemetery whose status could be compared to that of Père-Lachaise in Paris. Visiting Novodevichy Convent is one of the great things to do in Moscow, if you want to go a little bit outside of the center!

What to see in Moscow in one day

Discovering Tchistye Proudy district

It’s one of the most popular areas of Moscow, with many cafes, restaurants and bars nearby. It is therefore a place to discover if you want to visit Moscow in 4 days. It is just as pleasant for a stroll as for the discovery of local life. For example, in winter the pond turns into an ice rink.

Visiting the Izmaylovo Kremlin, one of the coolest things to do in Moscow!

The Izmaylovo Kremlin is more of a tourist than a historic place. On the other hand, it is a pretty impressive place to discover, especially on weekends. Inside the Kremlin, there is a flea market where you can find a little bit of everything, but mostly good souvenirs to bring from Moscow. For example, chapka, traditional Russian scarves or matryoshka (Russian dolls). Add the Kremlin and the Izmaïlovo market to your itinerary if you are going to visit Moscow in 4 days, because it is a nice and very colorful place! Visiting the Izmailovo Kremlin is one of the things to do in Moscow, if you want to put colors in your Instagram account! 😉

Things to do Moscow blog

In 4 days, we will have the opportunity to see several Moscow: Classic Moscow, Moscow of old Russia, Soviet Moscow and a little bit of the new Moscow. So what to visit in Moscow on the 5th day of travel?

Walking on Arbat Street

All Russians know Rue Arbat. So, walking on Arbat street is one of the things to do in Moscow. However, after the years, little by little it became very touristy. This is a pedestrian street only. There are souvenir shops, restaurants and cafes there, but it is no longer the most authentic neighborhood in the city.

Seeing the buildings of Moskva-City (Moscow City)

Moskva-City is Moscow’s business center, much like Paris’s Defense district. The skyscrapers of Moskva-City are among the tallest in Europe: 373 meters high! Very nice place to see at dusk.

What to visit in Moscow in 6 days or more?

There are still so many places to see, because Moscow is a big megalopolis and there is always something exciting to do there. For example: the ancient Kolomenskoye village or the WINZAVOD contemporary art center .

If you are interested in history and want to see Russian cities on a rather “human scale”, it would certainly be interesting for you to discover the cities of the Golden Ring . For example, it is very easy to get to Sergey Posad from Moscow (less than 2 hours in train). Visiting the Golden Ring is one of the best things to do in Moscow if you are staying more than a 5-6 days.

There are still plenty of places to see in Moscow, however I did my best to list here the best things to do in Moscow, what to see in Moscow in one day, but also in 2, 3, 4 or 5 days in Moscow!

Moscow travel tips:

  • Airport transfer: how to go to Moscow?
  • Where to stay in Moscow (hotels, districts)?
  • Tourist voucher for Russian visa
  • Christmas and New Year in Moscow
  • What is the best time to visit Moscow?
