Hear Journey’s First New Song This Decade, ‘The Way We Used To Be’

By Andy Greene

Andy Greene

Journey have shared a music video for “The Way We Used To Be,” which is their first new music since their 2011 LP Eclipse . It’s also the debut of Journey’s new lineup , which now features Narada Michael Walden on drums, Randy Jackson on bass, and Jason Derlatka on keyboards and backing vocals in addition to returning members Neal Schon, Jonathan Cain, and Arnel Pineda.

“[This song] came out of one of the many loops I’d written while the long downtime continued with the pandemic we all had to deal with,” Schon said in a statement. “So utilizing my time and trying to keep fans in touch I started posting many jams and loops I created very quickly most every day. On ‘The Way We Used To Be’ I laid down the keyboard loop with over-dubbed rhythm and a little blues lead guitar and sent to Jonathan. He sent it back very shortly after with demo vocals and lyrics and I said to myself with a smile, ‘We’ve still got it!'”

“I felt Jonathan nailed the lyrics and melody with haunting chorus ‘got to get back’ – ‘to the way we used to be,’” he continues. “So this was the complete new beginning chapter for Journey – many more follow the same sequence with all of us collectively writing and working together. We now have over 26 songs that we’ve written and whittling it down to 10 or 12. We are very excited by all the new musical endeavors we’ve created together looking forward to getting back on the road to you.”

Earlier this year, Schon spoke to Rolling Stone about the difficulty of creating a new Journey album while the band was spread all over the world and in lockdown. “Narada and I have been working nonstop,” he said. “Jonathan [Cain] is also working from his houses in Florida and Nashville. Arnel is working from Manila. Randy Jackson is working mostly from L.A. And it’s one of those Zoom sessions and it sounds phenomenal. It sounds like we’re all playing in the room at the same time.”

There’s no release date for the new album, but Schon said he hoped it would come out before the end of the year. In the meantime, Journey are playing their first post-pandemic show at Chicago’s Aragon Ballroom on July 29th. Two days later, they are headlining Lollapalooza. Their only other live date is an appearance at the IHeartMusic Festival in Las Vegas on September 18th.

Editor’s picks

The 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history, every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term.

Since the last time they played in public in late 2019, Journey went through a messy breakup with bassist Ross Valory and drummer Steve Smith stemming from a legal battle over the group’s copyright. They resolved the matter outside of court in April. When he spoke to Rolling Stone , Schon said he wasn’t willing to rule out playing with them again at some future point.

“Who knows?” he said. “I’ve known these guys for a long time. I didn’t agree with the way they went about business. I had been in a situation in the band with management and some of them for a long time where I felt like they were trying to make me leave. I was catching on to a lot of things that I’m getting to the bottom of now, business-wise.”

Also on the Journey horizon is a biopic about Arnel Pineda. Crazy Rich Asians director Jon Chu and Joker screenwriter Scott Silver have both signed onto the project.

“I’ve been implying it to [Scott Silver] that we should end everything [at my first Journey concert] in Chile,” Pineda told Rolling Stone earlier this year. “And I remember when my wife decided to join me on tour in 2011. We were playing to a 30,000 crowd that night. I was telling my wife, ‘Remember Hard Rock Cafe when there were only three tables? Now it’s 30,000 people.’ It was just unbelievable. It doesn’t get old to me. It’s still so surreal and bizarre.”

Journey to celebrate 50th anniversary with 30 shows in 2024: See where they're headed

journey on the go youtube

Journey is continuing the celebration of its five-decade career with a run of 2024 shows.

The 50 th Anniversary Freedom Tour kicks off Feb. 9 in Biloxi, Mississippi and will play 30 dates in North America through April 29 in Bridgeport, Connecticut. Tickets go on sale at 10 a.m. local time on Sept. 29 via ticketmaster.com.

Toto, which supported Journey on their tour earlier this year to celebrate their "Freedom" album, will again join Journey founder, guitarist Neal Scho n, keyboardist Jonathan Cain, lead singer Arnel Pineda, keyboardist Jason Derlatka, drummer Deen Castronovo and bassist Todd Jensen as show openers.

Journey's tour finds the Rock & Roll Hall of Famers tearing through a set list of anthems including "Any Way You Want It," "Faithfully," "Be Good to Yourself" and, of course, "Don't Stop Believin'."

When "Freedom" arrived in July 2022, Schon told USA Today that the album title was originally tapped for the band's 1986 release, "Raised on Radio," but then-singer Steve Perry didn't like it, "so we sat on it for many years … when we were tossing around album titles said, why not just call the whole thing 'Freedom?' It's for the times right now."

Schon was also sanguine when reflecting on the band’s legacy.

"It’s quite an accomplishment and I’m very proud of what we’ve done and how we’ve gotten through emotional and personnel changes and survived," he said. "It’s pretty mind-boggling but also a lot of hard work."

Tiffany Haddish opens up about journey to peace amid a difficult past

The comedienne and actress shared how sobriety and celibacy, as well as eight miscarriages, have impacted her journey to personal peace ahead of the release of her second book.

Tiffany Haddish is over the fame, but she’s looking forward to what’s to come in her life.

As she prepares for the May 7 release of her new memoir, “I Curse You with Joy,” which follows her 2017 New York Times bestseller, “The Last Black Unicorn,” the comedienne and actress is opening up about her journey to finding peace amid controversy — which started with her decision to remove alcohol from her diet, according to People magazine .

“This is my challenge to people. Stop drinking for six months, and just see how your life changes,” said Haddish. “You’re going to have your snatched body back, you’re going to see your relationships will be better, and you’ll stop dealing with people you don’t need to be dealing with.”

Tiffany Haddish memoir

“My issue was,” she shared, “I was waking up next to ugly men.”

Police arrested the “Girls Trip” star in Georgia in January 2022 after they found her asleep behind the wheel. She was charged with DUI and improper stopping on a roadway. In November, police found her asleep in her car in the middle of an intersection in Beverly Hills, resulting in another DUI arrest in Los Angeles.

“I’m very sober,” she shared recently, noting that it’s been a key ingredient in her happiness. “I haven’t had a drink since [the November incident]. When I sit back and look at my life, everything that’s crazy that’s happened is because somebody or myself had alcohol in their system.”

The actress revealed that she is also celibate, even though she is dating.

“They went together,” said Haddish on cutting out alcohol and sex simultaneously.

Haddish’s memoir has also pushed her to get transparent about the heartache she’s endured throughout her reproductive health battle, People reported.

The Grammy Award-winning comic learned last year that she has endometriosis, a condition in which the endometrium grows outside the uterus and can cause pelvic pain.

“I’m pretty sure the devil is real,” said Haddish, “because the first day of my period, no matter what, the devil goes into overdrive. I feel like my life gets turned upside down.”

While Haddish has learned to manage her heavy and painful periods, the most severe potential side effect of endometriosis for her has been pregnancy losses. The “Haunted Mansion” star shared that she has suffered eight miscarriages , and even though she’s not entirely sold on getting married for a second time or becoming a mom, there’s a part of her that wants to.

“I’ve got all this love,” Haddish told People, “I should give it to somebody who can grow with it.”

Prototype to pro: Graham Barton’s journey from Duke Dirt Devil to Buc

  • Rick Stroud Times staff

TAMPA — Graham Barton admits the name he suggested for the Duke offensive line may not have been the best.

It was an alliterative nod to the team mascot with enough grit befitting of the position group. However ...

“Everyone is throwing out names and nothing is really sticking and then I was trying to get things that (were alliterative) and I said Dirt Devils and everyone booed it (and) made fun of me because it’s a vacuum,” said Barton, laughing. “It’s like, ‘So what does that mean? We suck?’ ”

Far from it. Barton and his fellow offensive linemen eventually embraced their life of grime and the name stuck like grass to a facemask.

“By the end of the year, us and the quarterback room all have Dirt Devil T-shirts,” he said. “In all seriousness, we just had such a great position room and that identity was all about toughness and grit and playing through hard stuff. We had guys go in and out of the rotation with injury and just people battling and finishing every play, finishing through the whistle, playing with violence.

“That was just who we were at Duke — what we decided we were going to play each snap with. The Dirt Devil name kind of just encompassed all of that. (It was) a fun identity, but really spoke to who we were as a unit.”

On Friday, Barton arrived at the Bucs training facility looking clean in his light blue collared shirt and navy suit.

The first-round pick was greeted in the atrium of the facility by nearly every staff member after arriving from his hometown of Nashville. He led a cheer of “Tampa!” followed by the familiar response of “Bay!”

“He fits the prototype of what we’re looking for — big, fast, and strong,” coach Todd Bowles said. “... We’ve got a lot more beef in the middle where we can beef up and kind of keep people off the quarterback from coming up the gut. He’s a guy we sought highly coming into the draft and he kind of came to us, so we were ecstatic to have him.”

Barton, who played left tackle his last three seasons at Duke, was the center of attention and will soon be competing at center as the presumptive successor to Robert Hainsey.

Halfway through the 2023 season, Bowles and general manager Jason Licht agreed that the Bucs needed to get bigger on the interior offensive line and provide more push for the run game and protection for quarterback Baker Mayfield.

This was Barton’s first trip to Tampa Bay but his journey to the NFL was predictable when he was a freshman for the Ravenwood High School Raptors in Brentwood, Tennessee, a suburb of Nashville.

“I coached for 10 years and was the head coach for four years and Graham was always the most mature high school football player — and I’d go farther and say the most mature high school student — I ever came across,” said Matt Daniels, Barton’s coach for four seasons at Ravenwood.

“When you sat and talked to him, you felt like you were talking to someone seven or eight years older. To me, that’s kind of why we all were like, ‘Yeah, he could be special in terms of the NFL one day,’ because a lot of people have that physical piece, but they don’t have that other side.

“He would hang out in the coaches’ office after practice and talk about practice and talk about the game coming up that week and being a part of game plans. It was different, you know? And of course, other people saw that. This culture of not only building relationships with the coaches, but then he would have other buddies stay with him and we’d hang out and talk. He was big on helping us build our culture and being a really, really tight-knit group.”

Barton was an outstanding athlete who played lacrosse until he stopped his junior year to concentrate on football.

He mostly played left tackle, except for one memorable rep at defensive tackle to preserve a win against Pulaski (Arkansas) Academy his senior year.

“Somebody told him to go in on defense and he wasn’t within earshot,” Daniels said. “So he ended up sprinting onto the field. They’re going through their cadence, they’re about to snap the football, and he did not stop. He was in a full spring and, you know, he ran a sub-5.0 40-yard dash.

“So he’s in a full sprint and as the ball is snapped, he put a swim move on the center and flushed the quarterback immediately, and I think he wound up sharing a sack with one of our edge rushers and that was basically the game. It was fourth down and he was just cracking up coming off the field.”

Ravenwood finished 13-2 in Barton’s senior year, losing the state championship game.

Unbelievably, he didn’t receive an offer to play Division I football coming out of high school. It took impressing Duke coaches at their summer camp to earn one.

But Barton arrived at the campus in Durham, North Carolina, during the 2020 summer of COVID-19.

It was tough managing the isolation of having to be somewhat quarantined in dorms while waiting to see when his freshman season would begin.

“His goal has been to play in the NFL and a lot of people say that,” said former Duke offensive line coach Greg Frey, who is now at Tulsa. “... This is a guy who took coaching and took a tough situation (COVID shutdown) and continued to just grind and go after it and lift. He was in the weight room on his own. He’d come in and get extra lifts in. ... It was just incredible determination and discipline towards what he wanted to be.”

As former Alabama head coach Nick Saban said on ESPN during Thursday’s draft coverage, Barton could have taken name, image and likeness (NIL) money elsewhere and gotten into the transfer portal. But he loved Duke, where he majored in public policy.

“I’ll never forget when he committed to Duke,” Frey said. “He said, ‘I was standing on the roof of one of the buildings talking to coach (David) Cutcliffe’ and said he just knew that’s where he was committing. He said he just had that gut feeling. He felt that culture, and I know he will feel his way as a rookie, but he’s going to want to help drive that culture in Tampa.”

A letter from @grahambarton53 's parents pic.twitter.com/iaabTa06Wi — Duke Football (@DukeFOOTBALL) April 26, 2024

Shortly after the Bucs took Barton with the 26th overall pick, his mother Heather and father Phillip released a video documenting their son’s journey from a multi-sport athlete as a kid to the NFL.

“About the time Graham turned 3, he learned to navigate the DVR, re-watching college football games over and over,” his father said. “Later, we asked Graham what he liked most about watching football and he thought for a minute and replied, ‘the tackling.’ ”

The video ends with his parents encouraging him to follow his dreams.

“It definitely brings the emotions out,” Barton said. “My parents have been there every step of the way. They’ve taken me to practice, they’ve signed me up for every different sport, (they’ve) pushed me, fed me, they’ve been a huge part of this process, and I wouldn’t be anywhere near here without them. So, just to hear them share that message and how proud they are — it’s just a special moment for the family, for sure.”

Not a bad journey for a Dirt Devil.

After the Taliban took over in Afghanistan in 2021, four women — parliamentarians, ministers and journalists — were stripped of their positions of power. Resettling in Canada, the documentary An Unfinished Journey (part of the 2024 Hot Docs Festival in Toronto) documents their continued fight for freedom for women, women's right to education, and pressuring international power to force the Taliban to reverse gender apartheid policies.

Co-director Amie Williams has been living in Greece since 2018 and found out that a group of women airlifted out of Kabul were set to arrive in Athens. She met them through the Melissa Network , an organization for migrant and refugee women in Greece.

"We heard that these women were coming and we discussed, maybe this would be a really good opportunity to go meet them, see what's happened, talk to them, break bread with them, try to give them some solidarity," Williams told Yahoo Canada .

Moving the production to Canada, following three women on their journey, eventually adding a fourth in Canada, Toronto-based co-director Aeyliya Husain was particularly attracted to telling this story.

"I'm interested in women's issues that show my cultural background and about women that shatter the stereotypes and tropes of Muslim women," Husain said. "I met with the women as they started to come here to Canada, ... and then we eventually started filming with them."

Homaira Ayubi served four terms in Afghan parliament and we see her attending protests and meeting politicians in Canada. Zefnoon Safi, from Laghman Province, has a 20-year political career, but had to come to Canada without two of her daughters, who remain trapped in Afghanistan. Nargis Nehan was a minister who worked closely with Afghanistan’s ousted president Ashraf Ghani.   Journalist Nilofar Moradi had openly criticized the Taliban in her work, and resettled in Ottawa with her husband, six-year-old son and seven-month-old daughter.

Throughout An Unfinished Journey , we see these women mobilize a community, crafting a real call to action for women, and governments, all over the world.

"We wanted to highlight everything that the women have accomplished and that they are still accomplishing and doing," Husain said. "They have to have hope, right, in order to carry on, in order to connect."

"They were powerhouse heroines in their own right, in Afghanistan. They overcame incredible obstacles to get to where they were," Williams added. "I just felt like the world needs to know this, that these are hopeful stories, these are stories of incredible strength that all women can benefit from hearing."

'As long as Afghan girls can't go to school, no woman should ever think her life is free'

In terms of creating an environment where all these women felt comfortable to open up to the filmmakers, Williams stressed that they never pushed for their participation, originally in Greece.

"I think they appreciated us visiting them, there was a group of them that were living far from the city and in a rundown hotel, and they were getting quite bored, I think, and just waiting around for the next big bureaucratic hurdle they had to overcome to get their paperwork to Canada," Williams said.

"They also had a lot to protect. ... It's forced migration, they didn't want to be there. The last thing they probably wanted to do was be in a film or talk to a journalist, or a reporter. But it was me and young Afghan and Iranian refugees. So I think we came across very differently than say a CNN crew. It took time and certainly when they got to Canada, it helped that Aeyliya's from a similar cultural background. And it took a lot of time in Canada. It took us over two years to make this film."

"You're building a relationship with them, ... you start off slowly and you start talking to them, and you're open and transparent," Husain added. "You're trying to involve them in the process of what will we film and trying to get them engaged in it."

At the core of this film is that this isn't a story that only impacts Afghan women, it's really a message for all women around the world.

"A lot the women, in even in the film, say, we're not just fighting for rights for women in Afghanistan, but for women all over the world," Husain said. "We need to fight for returning education to young girls, allowing women to go out of their homes, they're basically being erased from public spaces and this is really dangerous."

"We need to look at it as a global community and go, we cannot allow this to happen here, because we cannot allow this to spread and happen to other countries in the world."

Women's rights have been under attack in recent years, including, but certainly not limited to, abortion rights in the U.S .

"It's really terrifying to watch what's happening in the United States from afar and I do think that ... as long as Afghan girls can't go to school, no woman should ever think her life is free," Williams said.

"This isn't just not going to school, it means you can't leave your home. So they're being erased from public view. And I don't see how any woman anywhere can watch this happen and not want to do something."

The filmmakers highlighted that part of creating this project was also to establish an impact campaign.

"We want to get countries like Canada, that has a feminist foreign policy, to make a statement about gender apartheid, and to get it codified in international law," Husain said. "There are a number of senators who are working on this, and we had a screening and Parliament Hill, ... to push them to actually make a statement and to define what gender apartheid is too."

Beyond breakfast biscuits: a father’s emotional journey to the chick-fil-a headquarters.

Brian Perry , Manager of Streaming & Creative Content , KPRC

The flow of life is often measured by its unpredictability and the unexpected events that shape our experiences. There are moments that stand out, altering the course of our existence in profound ways. For my family, one such moment occurred when something traumatic unfolded, leaving a permanent mark on our lives.

In July 2020, our youngest son, Ethan, who had just turned 12, was diagnosed with T-cell lymphoblastic Lymphoma, initiating a journey marked by Faith, Hope, and Love. Despite initial optimism, Ethan’s condition worsened, leading to relapse and relentless treatments. Faith in medical expertise sustained us, but Hope dwindled as Ethan’s condition deteriorated. After enduring extensive treatments, Ethan’s brave decision to go home signaled acceptance of his fate. He passed away on March 25, 2021, leaving us devastated.

Before cancer, our family found solace in Saturday mornings at Chick-fil-A, enjoying breakfast biscuits together. During his cancer journey, we discovered a Chick-fil-A right inside of the hospital at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. It quickly became our haven, providing comfort amidst the chaos.

A few weeks after Ethan’s passing, I woke up on a Saturday morning and drove to our neighborhood Chick-fil-A, and I ordered 2 breakfast biscuits, one for me and one for Ethan. Even though he was not there and would never get to enjoy breakfast with his dad, I still ordered him one. I got my order and then went to the car, and I cried and cried. I can’t remember if I even ate the biscuits that day. Then the next week, on Saturday morning, I went back, and have not stopped. For the past 35 months, this ritual has persisted each Saturday morning. Ordering two chicken biscuits, one for me and one for Ethan.

The word ‘restaurant,’ comes from the French, and means to restore. This holds true in my case. This Saturday morning ritual connects me to cherished memories and the warmth of shared moments. Last February, I wrote an article titled “How Chick-fil-A Biscuits bring comfort to a grieving father” . This article was inspired by a Facebook post I had shared with my friends. Many of them were moved by it and encouraged me to turn it into an article. I was hesitant at first, but after a lot of thought, I realized that sharing my story could help others. It also would be a window into the world of how a parent grieves when losing their child. I sent it to our digital team and asked them if they would publish it and the next thing I knew, it was published on all the Graham Media Group websites and the story sort of went viral. Then on the following Saturday after the article was published, I went to Chick-fil-A for breakfast, as usual, and when I walked in there was a reserved sign on table #13. I remember stopping in my tracks and tears were pouring out of my eyes. In the original article, I had mentioned that I like to sit at that table, because it faces east and there is nothing more beautiful than a ray of sunshine on your face.

From that day forward, the team at Chick-fil-A puts out a reserved sign on table #13 every Saturday morning. A few weeks later, Tony Levine, the restaurant operator, joined me for breakfast. He had with him a wrapped gift. He told me it was from the team at the Support Center in Atlanta. My wife, Angie, did not join me for breakfast that day, so I waited till she got home to open it. We slowly untied the red ribbon and set it aside. I then lifted the lid and inside was a framed painting of two chicken biscuits, hash browns, a drink, all atop a table with the number 13 on it. It perfectly captures the moment, and this one-of-a-kind piece of art is proudly displayed in our home.

Each March, on the anniversary of Ethan’s passing, Angie and I take a “reflection trip” and we were looking at possibly going to Atlanta. I can honestly say that I do earn plenty of Chick-fil-A (CFA) rewards and as a Signature Member, one of the benefits is access to backstage tours at the Support Center. Also, we have family in Atlanta and have not seen them in a while. I had mentioned this in passing to Tony one day and he said the Support Center has a great tour and has all the history of Chick-fil-A. Then the following week, I got a phone call from Tony, and he told me that the team at the Support Center would like to host Angie and me for a visit. While we were still on the phone, I got an email from Ed Perry, who is the Principal Operations Lead and Business Consultant for CFA. Ed was going to be our host and gave me all the information for our day at the Headquarters. I was reading the email and I noticed that the date of the visit was Monday, March 25th. This is the three-year anniversary of Ethan’s passing. Then I saw the sign and it hit me. This is Ethan’s doing. I have become a believer in signs, and I was convinced that this was one of them. Ed Perry! My last name is Perry. Ed starts with “E” and so does Ethan. What are the chances that our host for a visit to the CFA Headquarters has the same last name as us? Oh, and he has the same initials as our beloved son, “EP”. Ethan’s friends always called him “EP”. This brought a smile to my face.

We arrived in Atlanta on Saturday, March 23 and before we left for our flight at Hobby Airport, yes, we stopped for breakfast at CFA. I booked an afternoon flight so that I would not miss my Saturday morning ritual. We got to our hotel near the airport and settled in. On Sunday, we went to World of Coke and the Atlanta Aquarium. Both are great places to visit if you are in Atlanta. Coke and Chick-fil-A have a deep history. S. Truett Cathy, the founder, sold Coke in his neighborhood when he was eight years old. You can read more about that here .

Monday, March 25 came, and we were to arrive at the Support Center at 8 a.m. for our visit. We left our hotel and drove to the campus. We checked in with the security guard at the gate and were given a parking pass and a map, then we drove to the main building. The property sits on 73 wooded acres with nature trails, a lake, and beautiful landscaping. We parked our car, gathered our things, and walked up the path to the main entrance.

When we arrived, we were greeted by Ed Perry “EP” and a few other members of the team. To our surprise, they had warm chicken breakfast biscuits waiting for us. I was not expecting that, and I knew that this was going to be a day we would not forget. Our day started with lots of introductions, handshakes, hugs, smiles, and of course the biscuits. We began our walk through the building, with its open office concept and brightly lit corridors. We were headed to another building that was connected to the main one via an enclosed elevated walkway. Our first stop of the day was the Monday morning devotional. This is hosted by the Cathy family and is optional for employees to attend. There are around 4,000 people that work at the Support Center, and I was a little nervous to attend devotion because I was asked to speak. This is because they want to introduce their invited guests and team members that are visiting the Support Center. Since some of them were familiar with my original story that was published last year, they wanted me to share the story and the reason for our visit. I had no idea how big the space was going to be or what to expect, so I made sure to be prepared. I had written a speech that told the story of Ethan, his cancer journey and how for the past three years, I find solace enjoying breakfast biscuits each Saturday morning at Chick-fil-A. This was also my way to personally thank everyone at the Support Center for their love and support. It was neat to be a witness to their culture and I was thankful for the opportunity to be an invited guest. It is no secret that Chick-fil-A’s founder led a life that was centered on biblical principles. At the devotion, they welcomed everyone and talked about the week to come. On the agenda was a keynote speaker who gave a very impactful talk about encouragement.

I found the topic very interesting as throughout my entire grieving process, people have encouraged me to share my story and I have been doing that. Once her talk had ended, they began introducing the guests that were visiting the Support Center that day. Ed, our host, had informed us that we would be the last group to be introduced since I was going to be speaking. Most of the other guests in attendance were employees from restaurants around the country and some family members of CFA Operators. When it was our turn, we accompanied Ed to a microphone that they had set up near the main stage. He then introduced Angie and me to the crowd. I had noticed that the attendance had grown throughout the morning from when we first arrived. Ed was giving a little background on our visit and as I stood there in front of what felt like hundreds of people, I looked up at the sky through the arched glass ceiling. There were some clouds slowly moving in the sky and I felt Ethan looking down at me saying, “dad, I love you”. I then stepped up to the mic, took a deep breath, and began my speech. The room got quiet, and my voice was the only sound that filled the space. I had written my thoughts down because this is a sad story, and I can get emotional when speaking and at times can get lost in those emotions. So having it written out helps me stay on track. I spoke for about five minutes, and I remember looking up a few times and I could see people intently listening and really focusing on my words. I could feel the energy in the room and then I got to the end of my three-page speech. I looked up and said my final sentence. “Thank you for allowing me to share my story and for having Angie and I here today.” Then the silence was broken by applause, people stood up and I could see some of them wiping tears from their eyes. I stood there for a moment taking it all in. I then walked over to Angie, and I gave her a big hug. After devotion, Andrew Cathy, Truett Cathy’s grandson and current CEO of Chick-fil-A came over to meet us and we spent some time together and had a very nice chat. Then we were off to the main building for our behind-the-scenes tour. On our way to the tour, we stopped at the studio where they have the “Red Couch”. Yes, the “Red Couch”, the one that they use in their commercials. We had a seat and took some pictures. I was not surprised that they had a studio right there on the campus, it was very similar to the studio at KPRC. Lights, cameras, and set pieces.

GO BACKSTAGE: A Fascinating Tour of Chick-fil-A: Exploring the History and Operations

When we arrived back at the main building after the first part of our tour, we thanked our wonderful tour guide and said goodbye to our new friends from the two other Chick-fil-A’s that were with us. We were reunited with Ed and met Sarah from Public Affairs. We were scheduled to join some of the team for lunch, but we were taken back to the studio for a quick interview with Sarah about our story. It was interesting to be the one interviewed, because I am always behind the scenes and am not used to being the story. After that, we left the studio and went downstairs to the lower level where the Café was. Ed had saved a table for us, and we put our stuff down and then went to go get some food. It was very crowded and there were different stations with all sorts of eats and treats. They had the classics like, chicken sandwiches, grilled nuggets, pizza, salads, fountain sodas, iced tea, and many other items. These were offerings that were available every day. Then they had an area where the menu changes daily. This day there was baked chicken with rice and broccoli.

I opted for a slice of pizza, a salad, and a chicken sandwich. How could I not have a chicken sandwich, I was at the headquarters after all. While I was walking around with my food, lots of people recognized me from devotion and came up to me with kind words. Some even mentioned that they had heard about my Saturday morning ritual from my article last year. Everyone was so kind and made me feel so welcome. I was sort of eating while walking and talking. I was fortunate enough to get a few bites of pizza, ate about half the sandwich and never had time for that salad. Then someone asked me if I wanted some ice cream or a shake, I smiled like a little kid and next thing I knew, I had a chocolate shake in my hand, and it was delicious. Things started to calm down and we had some nice conversations with our table mates. We had to wrap things up at around 2 p.m. because we had to catch another shuttle bus to the Chick-fil-A Archives.

After our visit to the Archives, we looked at the time and it was getting late in the day and our visit was coming to an end. Back at the main building, we collected our things, said our goodbyes, and stopped at the gift shop for a few things. Before we made it back to the car, we stopped and recorded a quick selfie video on our phone for Tony and the team back in Houston. We sent it off and got in the car and drove to our cousin’s house in north Atlanta.

I left with a tear in my eye and my heart was filled with warmth. We stayed in Atlanta for a few more days. We visited the Botanical Gardens, The Center for Puppetry Arts, which had an exhibit from the Jim Henson Collection, and spent the rest of the time with family. Our cousin, Ben, had organized a cube drive for pediatric patients at Scottish Rite Hospital in Atlanta and we went with him to deliver those cubes. We are very proud of Ben for honoring Ethan’s legacy.

We founded a non-profit called Ethan’s Ohana and one of the things we do are cube drives for kids. Ethan had learned to solve the Rubik’s Cube in the hospital and became a master at it. You can read more about that on our website. At Ethan’s Ohana, we inspire acts of kindness toward others and create a community of support and understanding that nurtures hope, healing, and resilience.

A HUGE THANK YOU…

I want to thank my KPRC and Graham Media Group family for encouraging me to share my story. I am fortunate to work with an amazing group of people each day. Angie & I want to thank Ed Perry, Andrew Cathy, and the entire staff at the Support Center. They welcomed us with open arms and made our visit special. We made some new friends and are forever grateful for the experience. A huge special thanks to Tony Levine, and Chick-fil-A Sienna Crossing. They have become a surrogate family, very aware of our story, some of them having even known Ethan. Tanya, Luke, Andrew, Rhonda, Matilda, and so many more of the amazing team members lift my spirits during dark moments, providing solace, strength, and a reason to smile. The Chick-fil-A community has been an indispensable part of my journey toward healing. So, should you happen to be at Chick-fil-A Sienna Crossing on a Saturday morning, consider indulging in breakfast and joining me at table #13. Let us collectively acknowledge and celebrate the enduring strength of love and resilience amid moments of loss.

A Hunter uses the Prismatic subclass from The Final Shape

Preparing for The Final Shape , Destiny 2 ’s upcoming expansion that will serve as the finale of the Light and Darkness saga, is going to be quite a bit of work. But I have two pieces of good news for you on that front. First, there’s only so much you can do in a given week. And second, depending on what you like to do in the game, you might not need to prep at all.

In this Destiny 2 guide, I’ll walk you through what you need to do before jumping into The Final Shape , explain what’s going away on June 3, and, most importantly, if any of this matters to you at all.

Note : While the release date for The Final Shape is June 4, Bungie will shut the servers down 24 hours early, on June 3, in order to prepare the game for the expansion. Do not plan to cram last minute the night of June 3 or you will be very, very sad when you find the servers are offline.

Do you really need to prep before The Final Shape?

The Limited Edition of the Brave weapons from Destiny 2

Whether Destiny prep is a thing you need in your life is a question that only you can answer, as it depends heavily on what kind of player you are.

Are you planning on jumping into The Final Shape day one, playing the campaign on normal, exploring the new destination, grabbing a few of the new Exotics, and then moving on to another game for a bit? If that describes you, you absolutely do not need to prep at all for The Final Shape . Even if you’re intending on eventually playing through the new raid once the Contest mode leaves, you still don’t need to prep. Enjoy the final weeks of the Into the Light update stress free.

So, if even normal raiders don’t really need to prep, who does? Endgame players and raid racers, that’s who.

For those of us who like to push into difficult content immediately in Destiny 2 , materials are important, as you’ll want to be able to quickly Masterwork new Exotics or other items before diving into new content. But the XP grind is the really big one, as dropping tons of bounties on day one is how you can quickly access the new Artifact perks.

The early perks will be useful if you’re planning on playing the Legend campaign, but certainly not necessary. Where you’ll really want these perks is in the day one raid race for The Final Shape , as they can make a huge difference in your damage. Bungie hasn’t announced the Artifact mods as of this writing, but there is always something useful for a day one raid in there, and they typically come toward the end of the Artifact’s upgrade track, so you’ll need a lot of XP.

The Destiny 2 raid emblem.

To throw just one more small caveat in here, Bungie is introducing the new Fireteam Power system in The Final Shape , which you might be wondering about as you’re starting your prep. Well, Bungie has already clarified that Fireteam Power won’t apply during the Contest mode period of The Final Shape raid. So even if you have a designated Power grinding machine on your team, you’ll still want to prep your bounties and gather some materials.

For those not in the know, Fireteam Power allows the member of the Fireteam with the highest total Power level to share it with their allies — although players who are sharing that power will be five levels below the leader. This will be useful for the normal version of the raid once the Contest modifier is off, but as I mentioned before, you shouldn’t need to prep much anyway if your only goal is to complete the raid on normal.

Even if you’re a very confident raider and endgame player, prepping is more important than ever before if you’re planning on jumping into that raid race. Because The Final Shape raid release launches only three days after the expansion — rather than the customary 10 days — you’ll have very little time to grind out XP and resources once the expansion is in your hands.

How to prep your Destiny 2 character for The Final Shape

Flying members of the Dread enemy race in Destiny 2: The Final Shape

Prepping your Guardian for an expansion is a big task, but it’s a ritual Destiny players have been engaging in for years now. The idea here is to spend the last few weeks before an expansion comes out running around the worlds of Destiny and loading up your character with bounties, materials, and great weapons. It’s doing the busy work now so you don't have to do it when there is new content to focus on instead.

What materials should you hoard?

With Legendary Shards going away in The Final Shape , it’s hard to know exactly what the economy is going to look like on June 4. However, there are still some materials you definitely want to try and max out before the expansion launches:

  • Upgrade modules (25 max)
  • Ascendant Shards (30 max)
  • Ascendant Alloy (30 max)
  • Enhancement Prisms (100 max)
  • Enhancement Cores (no max, but try to store a few hundred)

Finally, let’s talk about Glimmer for a second. Glimmer has been given increased importance in Destiny 2 over the past few years , and that’s a trend that will likely continue in The Final Shape . The problem is you can only hold 500,000 at once.

So how can you stock up on something with a finite cap? Well, some players are taking their excess Legendary Shards and using them to purchase Phantasmal Fragments at the Lectern of Enchantment on the Moon for 10 Legendary Shards a piece. Rahool, the Cryptarch in the Tower, will allow you to exchange 10 Phantasmal Fragments for 10,000 Glimmer.

Keep in mind that Bungie could absolutely remove the ability to exchange these things in The Final Shape . But think about it this way: What else are you going to use those Legendary Shards for? It’s worth exchanging them now on the off chance Bungie doesn’t change anything here.

How and why you should prepare bounties

Bounty prepping is its own beast, and is extremely useful for juicing your XP the moment an expansion comes out.

There are definitely right ways to do it — as Skarrow9 details in his video above — but you also can’t really go wrong with it. Weekly Bounties like the Ascendant Challenges are ideal, but dallies also give great XP. Just stay away from repeatable bounties, bounties associated with seasonal content (as they’ll disappear from your inventory on June 4), and hoarding more than seven Crucible, Vanguard, and Gambit bounties.

If you have any bounties to turn in on Final Shape day, wait until you’re given the Artifact, group up with some friends on a destination like the Moon, put an XP boost mod on your Ghost, and just dump all of them at once.

Note : Bungie mentioned a potential change to the bounty system months ago, called Pathfinder , but haven’t said anything else about it. While there’s nothing to suggest bounty prepping won’t work in The Final Shape , it’s worth keeping in mind that Bungie could change this process anytime and invalidate all your hard work — especially with whatever Pathfinder is on the horizon. Now, there isn’t much evidence to suggest that your bounties will be worthless on June 4 — and I’d like to think Bungie would’ve said something by now if that was the case — but it’s worth keeping in mind all the same.

How to clean your Vault

Excess vault space is very important at the start of a new Destiny 2 expansion, as it lets you hoard new stuff into your bank before anyone has decided if it’s any good yet. There’s nothing worse than getting a new gun or perk, thinking it’s useless, sharding it, and then finding out it’s actually amazing 24 hours later.

We’re getting more vault space in The Final Shape , so cleaning out your old junk is less important this time around. However, I’d still aim to have anywhere between 50-100 open slots available. It’ll probably take you a bit to fill up 200 open slots once The Final Shape arrives, which should give you a nice break from vault management for at least a couple of weeks.

One final thing to keep in mind here is that Bungie is un-sunsetting all of you sunset weapons in Destiny 2: The Final Shape . If you’ve gone this long with a bunch of old guns still cluttering up your vault — specifically the ones you currently can’t upgrade, with the grayed out seasonal banners — do not delete them . Bungie will allow you to upgrade their power again in The Final Shape , meaning you’ll be able to use all of them once again. If you’ve sadly deleted a lot of your great, old guns — like I have — have no fear, as Bungie has assured players that it will add new methods to reacquire those old guns sooner rather than later.

Everything leaving Destiny 2 on June 3, 2024

Guardians walk into the Helm in Destiny 2

Even if you don’t care about preparing for Destiny 2 : The Final Shape , you might want to go experience the Lightfall seasons before they disappear for good. Sure, there is some decent loot to have here, but really you want to soak in the story and vibes while you have the chance. While each season only has a moment or two that really matters — like the massive lore cutscene Bungie dropped during Season of the Deep —there is still some important stuff for you to know before jumping into the latest expansion.

Below, I’m going to lay out what all is leaving and what is worth spending time on while you can.

Lightfall seasons

Mara confronts the spirit of Riven in Destiny 2: Season of the Wish

As usual, the seasons from the year of Lightfall will all disappear once The Final Shape comes out. That means all of their story content, their activities, and their craftable weapons will be gone. And while Bungie likes to reprise a handful of old guns every season or place them into the Exotic mission rotator, there’s no telling when any of that will happen.

If you want to get caught up on the story and experience all the various activities, you want to do it before The Final Shape . For reference, the four seasons are:

  • Season of Defiance
  • Season of the Deep
  • Season of the Witch
  • Season of the Wish

If all of that feels a little too intimidating, open up your menu, go to the Journey tab, and select Titles. You’ll find the Moments of Triumph 2023 badge there. Work your way through the Triumphs, as they do a really nice job of pointing you toward all the stuff that’s about to go away, and it offers some fun rewards as well.

As for craftable weapons, there are some really good ones this year and some really not good ones. I’ve combed through each of the four seasons and selected two weapons from each that you should really focus on for PvE (non-competitive or Crucible content).

Some of these weapons — like Scatter Signal and The Eremite — are incredible for endgame content. And some are just unique weapons that offer some rare rolls. Grab them all if you can:

  • Regnant (Void grenade launcher, Season of Defiance)
  • Imperial Decree (Kinetic shotgun, Season of Defiance)
  • Until Its Return (Strand shotgun, Season of the Deep)
  • Thin Precipice (Strand sword, Season of the Deep)
  • Semiotician (Strand rocket launcher, Season of the Witch)
  • The Eremite (Solar fusion rifle, Season of the Witch)
  • Scatter Signal (Strand fusion rifle, Season of the Wish)
  • Appetence (Stasis trace rifle, Season of the Wish)
  • Subjunctive (Arc submachine gun, Starcrossed mission)

Exotic missions

Guardians run through the Starcrossed mission in Destiny 2

We got three Exotic missions during the year of Lightfall , with Season of the Witch being the only season without one.

  • Avalon (Vexcalibur, Void glaive)
  • Whetstone (Wicked Implement, Stasis scout rifle)
  • Starcrossed (Wish-Keeper, Strand bow)

The fate of these missions is currently unknown. Typically, Exotic missions disappear along with their season. However, Bungie has recently added the Exotic mission rotator to the game, which allows you to dive into old Exotic missions like Presage or Operation: Seraph Shield .

However, even if all three of these missions go straight into the Exotic rotator, you’ll still need to wait for them to come around if you want to replay them or get their rewards. Now is the time to get your fill and craft these Exotic weapons.

Into the Light

The Hall of Champions in Destiny 2

Some of the Into the Light update is leaving , and some of it is staying. It’s a little bizarre, so let’s get into it.

Here’s everything leaving from the Into the Light update on June 3:

  • Pantheon, the endgame raid gauntlet, as well as its Godslayer Title
  • The Limited Editions of the Brave Arsenal weapons
  • The Hall of Champions, including the Arcite 99-40 quests, the Super Black shader quest, the Parade Armor chests, Trophy of Bravery tokens, and the weapon attunement system

So if all that is going away, what’s staying from Into the Light? Basically everything else:

  • The non-Limited Edition Brave Arsenal weapons (Bungie has mentioned re-adding the weapon attunement system in sometime after The Final Shape )
  • All three PvP maps
  • “The Whisper” mission
  • The “Zero Hour” mission
  • The Parade Armor and Super Black shader (Bungie said it will add new ways to get both of these after The Final Shape )

Now is the time to farm for all of the items above. Even for the stuff sticking around, it will be more difficult to do all of it after June 3 than it is before.

If you do all or any of the above, you’ll be ahead of the curve for The Final Shape when it launches on June 4.
