The 18 Best End-Of-The-World Movies That Have Us Prepping For The Apocalypse

The 18 Best End-Of-The-World Movies That Have Us Prepping For The Apocalypse

Michelle Nati

Vote up the movies about the end times that send you into serious survival mode.

The sky is falling! Aliens are landing! Where are the extra batteries? Whether the fictional apocalypse is caused by humankind, extraterrestrials, or natural disasters, end-of-the-world movies offer plenty of suspense and reflection.

Apocalyptic films usually show us the best and worst of humanity as survival hangs in the balance. And as we contemplate our existence and its potential tenuousness, we ask ourselves: What would I do if faced with the end? Or more practically, why didn't I buy that generator?

Interstellar

Interstellar

What Kind Of Apocalypse Is It? Earth is facing environmental collapse. NASA pilot Joe Cooper (Matthew McConaughey) must leave his kids behind and go on a journey to find a new planet via a newly discovered wormhole. But he'll gone be gone for years, and his daughter, Murph, believes he is abandoning her.

Is It The End Of The World As We Know It? For Earth yes; for humanity, no. Through Murph's work - she grows up to become a scientist herself, and with the help of Cooper, TARS' (the robot who assists him on the journey), and future humans, she's able to save humankind. So although Earth is no more, humanity continues on a space colony, and Cooper gets to see his daughter (now an old woman, while he remains the same age) for one last time. He then travels through the wormhole again to meet traveling companion and NASA scientist Dr. Amelia Brand (Anne Hathaway) on a planet that is habitable for humans.

Why It's Worth Watching: Viewers rate Interstellar as one of the best sci-fi films of all time, not only for its scientific accuracy, but also for great acting, original storytelling, and Oscar-winning visual affects. No one can do it quite like director Christopher Nolan.

The Day After Tomorrow

The Day After Tomorrow

What Kind Of Apocalypse Is It? A super-storm triggered by climate change ushers in a new ice age. As the temperatures drop radically over the course of just a few days, a climatologist (Dennis Quaid) tries to reach his son (Jake Gyllenhaal), who is stranded in New York City, before it's too late.

Is It The End Of The World As We Know It? Although many people are lost in the flash freeze of countries around the world, the main characters make it out of the chaos to Mexico, where temperatures are within the range for human life.

Why It's Worth Watching: Climate change message aside - that we need to do something now to correct the course of our fate - special effects make The Day After Tomorrow a worthwhile watch. Who doesn't, at times, want to see Los Angeles wiped out by a massive tornado, or New York City pummeled by a giant tsunami? The bigger the screen, the better.

28 Days Later

28 Days Later

What Kind Of Apocalypse Is It? Jim ( Oppenheimer 's Cillian Murphy) wakes up from a coma to find the hospital and London deserted. He learns that something called the Rage Virus has swept Britain and turned the populace into zombies. He and a group of survivors find a sanctuary outside the city, but it turns out to be no less dangerous.

Is It The End Of The World As We Know It? For most people in the UK, yes. Those who aren't outright killed by zombies but become them eventually starve. (The infected in this story aren't undead and don't feast on human flesh.) The survivors find a remote cottage where they live until a plane flying over the location discovers them.

Why It's Worth Watching: 28 Days Later made one big change to its zombie lore that breathed new life into the genre: the infected are now fast and aggressive, as opposed to the lumbering zombies of the George Romero movies. Their speed and homicidal urges make for edge-of-your-seat viewing. (The film spawned a sequel, 28 Weeks Later , and another sequel, 28 Years Later , is in the works .)

The Road

What Kind Of Apocalypse Is It? We never really know what created the post-apocalyptic hellscape of The Road. What we do know is that it wiped out all plant and animal life.

Is It The End Of The World As We Know It? Yes, a few survivors are either scavengers, cannibals, or people trying to escape becoming dinner. The story focuses on an unnamed man (Viggo Mortensen) who desperately tries to keep his son alive.

Why It's Worth Watching: We won't kid you - it's bleak . There's really not much hope here for the survivors even after the boy is picked up by a family who promises to take care of him in the wake of his father's passing. But's it's still a well-acted, well-written, and beautifully filmed movie.

Don't Look Up

Don't Look Up

What Kind Of Apocalypse Is It? Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence play astronomers who discover a comet is about to destroy Earth, but have a problem convincing the powers that be that it should be taken seriously. The solution? “Don't look up.” The news polarizes the world: some prepare, some don't, and a few privileged people manage to escape the planet for an unknown fate.

Is It The End Of The World As We Know It? Only the president's aide and son (played by Jonah Hill) survives. (While walking among the ruins he records himself on social media, telling no one to “like and subscribe.”)

Why It's Worth Watching: Don't Look Up , as a metaphor and warning for the current state of the world, is an extremely dark take on climate change, politics, Silicon Valley, the media, business, and human nature.

I Am Legend

I Am Legend

What Kind Of Apocalypse Is It? A genetically engineered measles virus created to cure cancer has a grave effect and wipes out most of the population, but there are also mutants called Darkseekers who survive. Like zombies, they feast on flesh and are strong and quick.

Is It The End Of The World As We Know It? A few survivors are immune, but most people have died or become Darkseekers themselves. Dr. Robert Neville (Will Smith) continues to study the Darkseekers and potentially look for a cure.

Why It's Worth Watching: In a version of I Am Legend made in 1971 called The Omega Man , Neville was played by Charlton Heston. That film is a camp ride, but this one is more terrifying, and more closely follows the book of the same name it was based on.

2012

What Kind Of Apocalypse Is It? The Mayan calendar predicted a cataclysmic global event in 2012, and the movie of the same name fleshes that idea out. Earth's crust is heated by a solar flare and causes unprecedented natural disasters. Jackson Curtis (John Cusack) is a struggling writer who races to save his family as scientist Adrian Helmsley (Chiwetel Ejiofor) attempts to warn world leaders of the impending doom.

Is It The End Of The World As We Know It? Most of humanity does not make it. However, Curtis, Helmsley, and other survivors do make it to the Drakensberg mountain range in South Africa via a specially built ark. It is now the highest point on Earth, as the African continent has risen several inches. Here, humanity can continue anew.

Why It's Worth Watching: Like The Day After Tomorrow , another Roland Emmerich disaster epic, 2012 is about the special effects. Look for the scene where Mount Everest gets covered in a mega tsunami. Sure, its super unrealistic, but an incredibly fun watch.

A Quiet Place

A Quiet Place

What Kind Of Apocalypse Is It? An alien invasion has already occurred and killed off much of the population. The Abbot family lives in quiet isolation, hoping not to get found out by sightless extraterrestrials with keen hearing and impenetrable armor. To stay undetected, they communicate mostly in sign language.

Is It The End Of The World As We Know It? Yes, but there are smart survivors like the Abbotts, who discover that high-pitched noises weaken the aliens to the point that they are vulnerable to being felled. (And there's already been A Quiet Place: Part II , with A Quiet Place: Part III on the way .)

Why It's Worth Watching: The film is a different take on the genre because it's mostly filmed in silence, heightening the suspense. The characters go to extreme lengths not to be heard, from walking barefoot to covering the area around where they live with sand so the aliens can't hear anything under their feet. When they do make noise, viewers hold their collective breath.

Leave the World Behind

Leave the World Behind

What Kind Of Apocalypse Is It? No one knows what causes all the technology people take for granted to stop working in Leave the World Behind , but it's assumed to be hackers. They take out everything from the power grid to cellphones and cars, blocking highways and isolating communities.

Is It The End Of The World As We Know It? It is, but we don't know to what degree. New York City is hit by a bomb at the end of the film, but the audience is as cut off from everything as the characters are.

Why It's Worth Watching: It's equally intriguing and horrifying to think about how we'd live and communicate without the computers that run our lives. Luckily, although significant cyberattacks have occurred, their effects aren't widespread. The possibility of an overall attack is low - for now, anyway.

Cloverfield

Cloverfield

What Kind Of Apocalypse Is It? Cloverfield is told through “found” footage of a group of friends after a giant monster comes out of nowhere and levels New York City. As they attempt to survive and escape the chaos, they document their experiences, providing a raw perspective of the destruction and mayhem unfolding around them.

Is It The End Of The World As We Know It? No, but it's definitely the end of New York City and the main characters, who are stuck there when the military decides to bomb the Big Apple to slay the monster.

Why It's Worth Watching: Found-footage films were all the rage when Cloverfield was released back in 2008, and it, like 28 Days Later , breathed new life into a tired genre. The cast was also mostly unknown, which made it seem all the more realistic.

Children of Men

Children of Men

What Kind Of Apocalypse Is It? Ecocide has led to sterility, and humanity faces extinction. Theo (Clive Owen) is a disillusioned civil servant who becomes entangled in a mission to protect Kee, a pregnant woman. He attempts to lead her to safety in a society that has broken down.

Is It The End Of The World As We Know It? The world will go on, but most of humankind will not. Kee's baby, however, offers hope, because Theo does get Kee to a place where she will rendezvous with a Human Project Ship.

Why It's Worth Watching: It's a bleak story that ends on a hopeful note, as well as a bittersweet one. Theo, who has been dead inside for years, finally finds something worth fighting for in a world that's no longer viable.

12 Monkeys

What Kind Of Apocalypse Is It? In 1996, a mysterious group known as the Army of the Twelve Monkeys may be responsible for a virus that wipes out most of humanity, with the survivors sent to live underground. In 2035, prisoner James Cole (Bruce Willis) goes back in time to help find when the virus mutated and help the human population, so he can be paroled in the present.

Is It The End Of The World As We Know It? The virus is still released although a cure is possible. Cole doesn't survive (at least the older version of him doesn't), and the villainous doctor who releases the virus gets on a plane with it. However, he is seated next to a scientist from 2035.

Why It's Worth Watching: The 1990s sci-fi classic features time travel; eccentric direction by Terry Gilliam; and excellent performances from Willis and Brad Pitt, who plays a person with mental issues involved in the Army of the 12 Monkeys; he received a best supporting actor Oscar nomination for the role.

Geostorm

What Kind Of Apocalypse Is It? Both humans and nature are to blame when climate-controlling satellites malfunction and create deadly weather patterns. Satellite designer Jake Lawson (Gerard Butler) must find the problem before a major storm hits.

Is It The End Of The World As We Know It? No, because Lawson discovers who has manipulated the satellites: the rogue secretary of state, who wants to weaponize them against other countries.

Why It's Worth Watching? Combine special effects, a strong ensemble cast, and a fast-paced script with a race against time, and you have a surefire winner.

Melancholia

Melancholia

What Kind Of Apocalypse Is It? The planet Melancholia leaves its orbit and smashes into Earth. In the first part of the movie, which takes place six months before the end, Justine (Kirsten Dunst), torpedoes her wedding day. The second part focuses on her sister Claire's (Charlotte Gainsbourg) inability to accept the end and Justine's embrace of it.

Is It The End Of The World As We Know It? There's no surviving Melancholia. As the planet approaches, Justine, who has in some sense been waiting for total upheaval, becomes more normal while Claire falls apart. The sisters and Claire's son build a protective structure made of sticks in the yard as they wait for the end.

Why It's Worth Watching: Viewers who have suffered serious depression get the metaphor the planet serves. But for those who don't, Lars von Trier's end of the world is an original, gorgeous mix of European art-house and Hollywood sci-fi.

The World's End

The World's End

What Kind Of Apocalypse Is It?  Gary King (Simon Pegg) is a 40-something alcoholic who feels like his best days are behind him. To recapture his youth, he decides to get the group together for one more pub crawl. As they make their way toward their final destination, The World's End pub, they themselves in the middle of an alien invasion.

Is It The End Of The World As We Know It? Throughout the film, the aliens replace humans with androids known as "Blanks." When the alien invader is destroyed, the world is thrown back into the Dark Ages, but humanity continues and co-exists with the androids. The remaining Blanks integrate into a society reluctant to have them.

Why It's Worth Watching: The final film in Pegg's “Cornetto Trilogy" is the most mature. Sure, it's dark, but still hilarious. The soundtrack - late ’80s/early ’90s Brit pop - also features great songs you might have forgotten about.

War of the Worlds

War of the Worlds

What Kind Of Apocalypse Is It? Ray Ferrier (Tom Cruise) is a father trying to keep his two kids alive as the world crumbles around him due to an alien invasion from a technologically advanced planet. As he attempts to get them to safety, he experiences the best and worst of humanity.

Is It The End Of The World As We Know It? Almost. The aliens plan to take over completely, planting vegetation and fertilizing it with human remains. The planet takes a beating and millions of people perish, but both survive without really trying: the aliens die from exposure to Earth's many microbes.

Why It's Worth Watching: Based on the H.G. Wells novel, Orson Welles's 1938 radio show, and the 1953 B-movie of the same name, this version by Steven Spielberg hits all the rights notes in action, terror, and suspense.

Seeking a Friend for the End of the World

Seeking a Friend for the End of the World

What Kind Of Apocalypse Is It? The world is ending with an asteroid strike in three weeks, and Dodge's (Steve Carell) wife leaves him. Hoping not to die alone, he goes on a road trip to find his high school sweetheart, but forms a friendship with his neighbor, Penny (Keira Knightley), who is searching for a way to get back to England to see her family.

Is It The End Of The World As We Know It? No one survives the asteroid strike, but Dodge and Penny don't die alone. Despite attempting to go their separate ways, they cannot bear to leave each other, and embrace as the asteroid crashes into Earth.

Why It's Worth Watching: Sure, the world will likely be in chaos when the end comes, but this film shows that it doesn't have to be. While it's a gloomy premise as people come to terms with their fate, Dodge and Penny's emotional journey is so strong it tugs at viewers' heartstrings.

This Is the End

This Is the End

What Kind Of Apocalypse Is It? After much of the population is raptured, earthquakes, sinkholes, and demons plague the Earth, as described in the Book of Revelation. James Franco, Seth Rogen, Jonah Hill, Jay Baruchel, Craig Robinson, and Danny McBride play exaggerated versions of themselves trapped in Franco's house during a massive party when things take a turn for the worse.

Is It The End Of The World As We Know It? Yes, the Earth is wiped out, and those who aren't raptured perish in the most gruesome ways: Franco is cannibalized by McBride; Hill, possessed by a demon, is crushed by Franco's fiery home and his soul is sent to hell. But all is not lost: the rest of the group makes it to heaven.

Why It's Worth Watching: It's bottom-line hilarious and keeps you on edge; you never know what will happen next. A lot of the scenes are graphic in tone and physical comedy, but the film is definitely a must-see.

Educational Value

Introduces some very basic scientific principles: The earth is round and revolves each day as it travels around the sun; some creatures are in danger of extinction.

Positive Messages

Encourages having new experiences, expanding one's horizons. Values responsibility to others, follow-through, teamwork, and friendship. Good triumphs over evil. "Never worry about what other people think; what's important is what you think."

Positive Role Models

A team of birds and a little girl summon courage, a sense of responsibility, inventiveness, and their desire to be helpful as they embark on their adventure. Emma disobeys her dad repeatedly, but her behavior is always justified and she does the right thing. Her dad, and the parents of two penguins, learn valuable lessons about listening to, believing in, and trusting their children. One of the birds, the fictional Kakapo, must overcome his natural fearfulness to help his friends and accomplish his goal. The lead villain (a human) is a cackling, child-hating inventor/businessman; his accomplice is a brainless nincompoop.

Violence & Scariness

Plenty of comic cartoon action: bumps, tumbles, chases. Characters drop down a laundry chute and are lost, held captive, chased, stranded on ice floes, and menaced by the bad guys. They make narrow escapes, dangle from a ladder, and become trapped in a washing machine. Some mildly scary images of a cat with bared teeth threatening a young penguin and always hunting for the heroes.

A few instances of name-calling: "nosy brat," "thieves," "scoundrels," "idiot."

Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that Jasper: Journey to the End of the World is a wonderfully animated DVD import from Germany, reissued for English-speaking audiences. The characters have British accents, and it might take a few minutes before young viewers become accustomed to the sounds. There is plenty of cartoon action, mostly laughable falls, slides, bonks, and chases. The lead villain is a mustache-twirling evildoer who hates kids; his henchmen are a bumbling strongman and a steely, teeth-baring cat. Our heroes get stuck in a washing machine, fall down a laundry shoot, and are stranded on ice, but all is resolved without injury or mayhem. Kids who are at ease with pretend vs. real jeopardy should have no problem with either the "danger" or the comic battles. Gentle messages about parents trusting their kids, the importance of teamwork and friendship, and not giving up run through the story. Acceptable movie for sensitive children

What's the story.

It's very, very cold where Jasper (voiced by Rick Adams ) and his family of penguins live in JASPER: JOURNEY TO THE END OF THE WORLD. The elder penguins are certain that their habitat is the entire world: flat, white, and treacherous at its "edge." When Jasper alone sees a sign of something more -- in fact, an enormous luxury liner in their ocean -- no one believes him. One day, while in charge of his baby brother, Jasper sets off on an adventure that will prove him right. When Junior jumps into the ocean and lands on an ice floe, it's up to Jasper to rescue him. Winds overtake the brothers on their tiny ice floe, and as they float further and further from their land, snow and ice give way to sunshine and warmth. And there before them is the amazing ship. Before they know it, they've stowed away, met two new friends -- Kakapo, a very fearful parrot ( Rob Rackstraw ), and Emma, the ship captain's captivating little daughter (Kate Rawlings) -- and are united with them in a quest to save precious stolen parrot eggs from Dr. Block (Steve Hudson), a lemonade tycoon who wants to spread fear to all the children of the world. Will Kakapo save the eggs? Will Jasper and Junior find their way home? Will Emma find new "best friends forever?"

Is It Any Good?

This delightful tale with its wonderfully distinctive characters is one of those rare movies that both kids and grown-ups will enjoy. The animation, humor, and storytelling all are first rate. The very amusing action sequences find the heroes in all sorts of unusual shipboard predicaments -- swooshing down laundry chutes, clutching at portholes, and outwitting a diva who's interfering with their objective. Best of all, these sequences are dependent upon the personalities that have been established, so they are funnier and more inventive than others that rely strictly upon action alone. Terrific voice performances from all, with special kudos to Steve Hudson, who handles a slew of unique vocal roles. Recommended for all kids who clearly know the difference between real and cartoon jeopardy.

Talk to Your Kids About ...

Families can talk about Jasper's role as a big brother to Junior. Even though Junior is sometimes mischievous, how does Jasper treat him? Does he remain patient? Loving? If you have brothers or sisters, how do you handle any mixed feelings you have?

Find out what the word "extinct" means when it's related to living creatures. How does the threat of extinction make Kakapo's quest for the eggs so important?

Why did the penguins think the world was so small when the story opened? Upon what were they basing their belief? How did Jasper prove them wrong? How does learning new facts and listening to new ideas change us?

journey to the end of the world movie

Now streaming on:

An intelligent, meticulously crafted drama about British soldiers in the trenches of World War I, “Journey’s End” is the latest cinematic rendition of a play by a war veteran, R.C. Sheriff, which premiered in England in 1928 with Laurence Olivier in a lead role. While the play was a huge hit on both sides of the Atlantic, and has proved an admirably durable theatrical staple (I saw the hit Broadway revival of 2007), one might wonder why it would be made into a movie in the present day.

An obvious one-word answer: “ Dunkirk .” Although they concern different wars, the two movies plumb the innate drama, tedium and terror of soldiers on foreign soil bracing for an onslaught by overwhelming enemy forces. Intimate and verbal, though, Saul Dibb ’s film provides a satisfying antithesis to Christopher Nolan ’s macrocosmic, hyper-sensory view of war: it gives close and sustained attention to a handful of soldiers facing both an implacable foe and their own mortality.

Since its debut, Sheriff’s play has been praised for its precise, flavorful realism and avoidance of cliches and rhetoric. Unlike many literary and cinematic treatments that would come later, it’s neither staunchly “patriotic” nor polemically “anti-war.” Leaving aside the war’s political causes (aside from one character’s statement that it should never have happened), it focuses squarely on the certain individuals and their ways of dealing with a situation of impending catastrophe.

Simon Reade ’s script for the film preserves the play’s virtues while opening its action outward in appropriate and judicious ways: While most of the drama remains in the bunkers of the British forces, when the soldiers leap out of the trenches onto the battlefield, we see that, too.

The tale takes place in the spring of 1918 near St. Quentin, France. The war has already dragged out for nearly four years, with millions killed; it will grind on for more than a half-year longer, snuffing out countless lives as it does. There is, in other words, nothing either strategically or historically significant about the episode we witness; it’s just another horror in a seemingly endless succession of them.

The film escorts us into the battle zone following fresh-faced teenaged Second Lieutenant Raleigh ( Asa Butterfield ), who could have done his service in a safer place but instead has gone to some trouble to get assigned to the command of Captain Stanhope ( Sam Claflin ). Before the war, Stanhope was a senior boy at Raleigh’s school and enamored of his sister; the three spent holidays happily wandering England’s countryside, the younger man recalls.

The early scene where Raleigh encounters Stanhope for the first time in the unit’s underground HQ is one of the film’s most memorable. Instead of the warm welcome he expected from his admired older pal, Raleigh finds a changed man. Though respected by his soldiers, Stanhope is a stiff and troubled officer and hardcore alcoholic. Naturally he doesn’t like Raleigh seeing him like this, and fears the reports he might send his sister.

Stanhope (the role that launched Olivier) is the pivotal figure in this drama. The other main character, gentlemanly, bookish Lieutenant Osborne ( Paul Bettany ), has joined the unit just recently but seems to have already formed a solid bond with Stanhope, who obviously needs his steadying, sane friendship.

A side note: The first film version of “Journey’s End” was directed in 1930 by James Whale , who would direct “Frankenstein” the following year and whose troubled psychic life as a gay WWI veteran is the subject of Bill Condon ’s “ Gods and Monsters .” While rights issues have kept Whale’s “Journey’s End” long out of circulation, a friend who’s seen it told me it’s rife with homosexual subtext. Apart perhaps from a poignant scene where a drunken Stanhope implores Osborne to tuck him into bed, that’s not the case here.

Instead, the drama describes the tensions, anxieties and sustaining camaraderie that unite these men and their fellows—including stalwart cook Mason ( Toby Jones ) and battle-hardened Trotter ( Stephen Graham ) and Hibbert ( Tom Sturridge )—as they begin a week when they’ve learned a massive German offensive is expected to begin. All know that they will be neither be evacuated nor reinforced. They are simply sacrificial lambs of the most basic strategic sort, their deaths meant only to momentarily slow the advancing enemy.

A crucial turn at the film’s dramatic apex comes when the Brits’ commanders send down an order that the unit mount a party of two officers and ten men to dash across no-man’s-land in the face of enemy fire, grab any German soldier they can, and bring him back in hopes of extracting intelligence about the upcoming attack. Raleigh and Osborne are the officers chosen for the detail. The mission is almost assuredly suicidal, just as it is inevitably futile, since it can do little or nothing to affect the impending slaughter.

Dibbs does a fine job bringing a nuanced, realistic visual style to this venerable tale of war’s cruel and colossal wastes, and his actors are all first-rate, with Bettany a special stand-out. But though it proves the timelessness of Sheriff’s drama, the film doesn’t make a particularly strong case for why, “Dunkirk” apart, it should be considered more-than-usually relevant today.

The 15 Best Post-Apocalyptic Movies After the End of the World

journey to the end of the world movie

If you buy something using our links, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Thanks for your support!

Post-apocalyptic movies are uniquely bleak, but they can also be hopeful. No matter how bad society gets, these movies can inspire us and make us feel like it's never too late to recover and turn around.

Then again, some of the best post-apocalyptic films don't have happy endings at all. They show us the worst-case scenarios of the future and act as warnings against wasting what we currently have.

Whatever the case, I love end-of-the-world movies and I love imagining what I would do—as a nerd with no extraordinary physical capabilities whatsoever—in such scenarios.

Here are my picks for the best post-apocalyptic movies about the end of the world that are seriously worth watching.

Note: There's a lot of overlap between movies that are post-apocalyptic , disaster , and dystopian . For this article, I'm strictly focusing on movies that take place AFTER an apocalypse has devastated the world. That's the only criteria!

15. Retreat (2011)

journey to the end of the world movie

Directed by Carl Tibbetts

Starring Thandiwe Newton, Cillian Murphy, Jamie Bell

Drama, Horror, Thriller (1h 30m)

5.8 on IMDb — 62% on RT

Imagine if society collapsed and you didn't even know about it. Carl Tibbetts ponders this question in his gloomy thriller Retreat , starring Cillian Murphy, Thandie Newton, and Jamie Bell.

Tibbetts' directorial debut takes place on a small and uninhabited island off the coast of Scotland, where an unhappy couple go to try and rekindle their marriage.

Then a bloody, half-conscious man washes ashore and informs the couple of an airborne disease that has broken out all over the world.

Argromoto Flu has a 100% fatality rate, but with the stranger's behavior becoming increasingly erratic, the couple begin to question its authenticity. Retreat is focused into a claustrophobic setting, made to broil in suspense under a dramatic score.

14. This Is the End (2013)

journey to the end of the world movie

Directed by Evan Goldberg and Seth Rogen

Starring James Franco, Jonah Hill, Seth Rogen

Comedy, Fantasy (1h 47m)

6.6 on IMDb — 83% on RT

Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg provide another knee-slapping comedy, this time taking place at the end of the world. This Is The End is particularly funny because all the actors play a not-quite-true-to-reality version of themselves.

A huge gathering of celebrities come together for a party at James Franco's house in Hollywood. Suddenly, an apocalypse of Biblical proportions erupts and traps a bunch of the guests in Franco's house, where cabin fever begins to brew.

James Franco, Jay Baruchel, Danny McBride, Jonah Hill, and Michael Cera team up along with star cameos from Emma Watson, Rihanna, Paul Rudd, Kevin Hart.... the list is endless.

This Is The End gets more and more insane as the movie goes on. Rogen clearly ran free with this story, and in turn, the audience have fun with it. A truly bonkers movie, devoid of any rules.

13. 9 (2009)

journey to the end of the world movie

Directed by Shane Acker

Starring Elijah Wood, Jennifer Connelly, Crispin Glover

Animation, Action, Adventure (1h 19m)

7.0 on IMDb — 57% on RT

Here we have a seriously underrated animated film directed by Shane Acker and produced by Tim Burton—and as you'd expect from a Tim Burton production, this one can get pretty creepy at times.

In 9 , a scientist accidentally creates intelligent robots that become corrupted, which leads to the extermination of humans. That same scientist then sacrifices himself to create nine Stitchpunk dolls—each imbued with a portion of his soul—to stop the robots.

Voiced by the likes of Elijah Wood, Jennifer Connelly, John C. Reilly, and Christopher Plummer, 9 is a surprisingly dark and emotional journey that's visually fun and worth the ride.

journey to the end of the world movie

12. I Am Legend (2007)

journey to the end of the world movie

Directed by Francis Lawrence

Starring Will Smith, Alice Braga, Charlie Tahan

Action, Drama, Horror (1h 41m)

7.2 on IMDb — 68% on RT

In I Am Legend , Will Smith stars as the leading man... or should we say, the only man. A virus that was meant to cure cancer has wiped out the globe, making Robert Neville the last man standing in New York City. Well, him and some cannibalistic mutants.

Since Neville is immune to the virus, he spends his days hiding out with his dog, experimenting for cures and monitoring the radio for any signs of other survivors, all while avoiding the zombie-like "Darkseekers."

Francis Lawrence's sci-fi drama-thriller was a hit with action fans, immersing viewers enough to overlook the questionable special effects. Smith brilliantly carries the movie on his shoulders, making us long to reach out and end his incessant loneliness.

11. The Book of Eli (2010)

journey to the end of the world movie

Directed by Albert Hughes and Allen Hughes

Starring Denzel Washington, Mila Kunis, Ray Stevenson

Action, Adventure, Drama (1h 58m)

6.8 on IMDb — 47% on RT

Decades after a nuclear apocalypse, a mysterious man is tasked with delivering a book to a location he receives in a vision.

Say what you will about the subject matter, The Book of Eli holds a special place in my heart for its themes of perseverence and holding fast to one's convictions in the face of opposition.

Is it a subtle film? No. But it's exciting! And Denzel Washington puts on a heck of a performance as Eli.

journey to the end of the world movie

10. WALL-E (2008)

journey to the end of the world movie

Directed by Andrew Stanton

Starring Ben Burtt, Elissa Knight, Jeff Garlin

Animation, Adventure, Family (1h 38m)

8.4 on IMDb — 95% on RT

WALL-E centers on WALL-E, one of many trash-compacting robots that were created to help clean up a world turned wasteland. But even though humans gave up on Earth long ago and took to the skies, WALL-E continues to roam the planet and clean.

Unlike most post-apocalyptic movies, WALL-E manages to be a rebuke against reprehensible human behavior—namely excessive consumerism and corporate greed—yet also wholesome and uplifting.

After EVE arrives to assess the planet for human habitability, we're taken on a lovely ride as EVE and WALL-E form a bond that ends up being one of the best love stories in cinema. This is peak Pixar, for sure.

journey to the end of the world movie

9. Zombieland (2009)

journey to the end of the world movie

Directed by Ruben Fleischer

Starring Jesse Eisenberg, Emma Stone, Woody Harrelson

Action, Comedy, Horror (1h 28m)

7.6 on IMDb — 89% on RT

After the world is taken over by a zombie outbreak, four strangers—named after the cities Tallahassee, Columbus, Wichita, and Little Rock—band together to take a road trip across America in search of refuge.

It sounds serious, but Zombieland is one of the greatest comedy zombie movies ever made. On top of being funny, it has a lot of heart shared between the characters as they work together.

Plus, there's a legendary cameo by Bill Murray. What more could you ask for? Zombieland is one of the most rewatchable movies, and it's a wonder that this all takes place in a world ruined.

8. 28 Days Later (2002)

journey to the end of the world movie

Directed by Danny Boyle

Starring Cillian Murphy, Naomie Harris, Christopher Eccleston

Drama, Horror, Sci-Fi (1h 53m)

7.5 on IMDb — 87% on RT

A man wakes up 28 days after a contagious virus has devastated his country, turning people into raging monsters.

While 28 Days Later is full-blown horror, one thing sets it apart from other zombie films: its insistence on exploring the different facets of humanity in the face of catastrophe and despair.

There are some real human moments here, which heighten the thrills that much more and elevate 28 Days Later from just another zombie movie to one that's deep, insightful, and chilling.

7. Snowpiercer (2013)

journey to the end of the world movie

Directed by Bong Joon-ho

Starring Chris Evans, Song Kang-ho, Tilda Swinton

Action, Drama, Sci-Fi (2h 6m)

7.1 on IMDb — 94% on RT

After a man-made catastrophe covers the entire planet in snow, the last surviving remnants of humanity are stuck aboard the Snowpiercer, a train that endlessly circles the globe.

Snowpiercer is stylish, packed with action, but more than that, philosophical. Using its unique setting, the film explores class warfare and inequality in a way that's both subtle and a gut-punch.

journey to the end of the world movie

6. Mad Max: Fury Road (2015)

journey to the end of the world movie

Directed by George Miller

Starring Tom Hardy, Charlize Theron, Nicholas Hoult

Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi (2h)

8.1 on IMDb — 97% on RT

It's hard to think of a post-apocalyptic movie that's more stylish than Mad Max: Fury Road . The character designs, insane vehicles, creative worldbuilding, and high-octane action sequences make for a film that's unmatched in terms of sheer entertainment value.

Directed by George Miller, Mad Max: Fury Road is essentially one long car chase across a desert wasteland as Max Rockatansky allies with Furiosa to escape—and later fight—Immortan Joe and his army.

Post-apocalyptic popcorn flicks are surprisingly uncommon, which makes this film all the more impressive.

5. 10 Cloverfield Lane (2016)

journey to the end of the world movie

Directed by Dan Trachtenberg

Starring John Goodman, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, John Gallagher Jr.

Drama, Horror, Mystery (1h 43m)

7.2 on IMDb — 90% on RT

If you're a fan of suspense films that take place in one setting, 10 Cloverfield Lane should be high up on your watchlist.

A woman, after crashing in a car accident, wakes up in an underground bunker with two men who won't allow her to leave. Why? Well, they claim that the Earth is now uninhabitable to humans.

It's an edge-of-your-seat kind of film through and through, with a tremendously terrifying performance from John Goodman. He's the last person you want to be stuck with after an apocalypse.

4. A Quiet Place (2018)

journey to the end of the world movie

Directed by John Krasinski

Starring Emily Blunt, John Krasinski, Millicent Simmonds

Drama, Horror, Sci-Fi (1h 30m)

7.5 on IMDb — 96% on RT

In the near future, the world is overtaken by bloodthirsty alien creatures who are blind but have ultra-sensitive hearing—to the point where they can hear the slightest noise from miles away.

A Quiet Place is a horror film with near-zero dialogue and maximum tension, forcing its characters to live in silence and use sign language for communication as they try to survive in this new world.

3. Children of Men (2006)

journey to the end of the world movie

Directed by Alfronso Cuarón

Starring Clive Owen, Julianne Moore, Chiwetel Ejiofor

Action, Drama, Sci-Fi (1h 49m)

7.9 on IMDb — 92% on RT

Imagine a future where women can no longer get pregnant. A bleak future that'd be, wouldn't it?

Children of Men poses that premise with a twist: after 18 years of global strife, a refugee woman secretly gives birth to a son, and one man must protect her as he escorts her to a scientific facility.

With impeccable direction from Alfonso Cuarón and a strong lead performance by Clive Owen, Children of Men is a must-watch for anyone who wants a philosophical movie about humanity wrestling with its flaws in a hopeless world.

journey to the end of the world movie

2. The Matrix (1999)

journey to the end of the world movie

Directed by Lana Wachowski and Lilly Wachowski

Starring Keanu Reeves, Laurence Fishburne, Carrie-Anne Moss

Action, Sci-Fi (2h 16m)

8.7 on IMDb — 88% on RT

If you identify as a geek, you've probably already seen The Matrix —but if you haven't, that's okay. All that means is you still have the privilege of watching this brilliant film with fresh eyes.

The Matrix is a shining example of a dystopian cyberpunk future founded on the aftermath of an apocalypse, and there's a lot of symbolism and thematic depth to dig through if you're into that sort of thing.

Watching it now may not be as impressive as catching it when it released in theaters, and it probably won't blow your mind because so many movies have copied it since. Even so, The Matrix remains one of the best of its kind and still holds up well.

1. The Road (2009)

journey to the end of the world movie

Directed by John Hillcoat

Starring Viggo Mortensen, Charlize Theron, Kodi Smit-McPhee

Drama, Thriller (1h 51m)

7.2 on IMDb — 74% on RT

Be warned: The Road is a downer. The overall atmosphere, the subject matter, the themes explored, the character moments—it's all very mature, dark, heavy, and even hopeless.

Based on the book by Cormac McCarthy, The Road centers on a father and his young son as they trek across a post-apocalyptic wasteland.

They need to make it across the country to find safety along the coast, but their journey is impeded by roving bandits, rapists, cannibals, and all manner of others who have long lost their humanity.

The Road is a thoughtfully haunting film—one you'll be thinking about long after the credits—that's crafted for a deep impact. The horrific reality of it all is what makes The Road the best of the best post-apocalyptic movies of all time.

Apes ride in to Hollywood for premiere of new film 'Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes'

W e are taking you to the world premiere of "Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes." This film is set in the future. And this time around, the apes are now the dominant species on the planet.

Apes on horseback rode onto the red carpet to open the world premiere of "Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes" in Hollywood. This is the latest film in a franchise that began 56 years ago.

Owen Teague plays the movie's young hero, Noa. In a dark time, he takes on a dangerous mission, hoping to do the right thing for the future of both apes and humans.

"He's an extraordinarily lovable character," said Teague. "I had a really hard time shaking him afterwards and I didn't want to see him go so I'm really hoping that we get to make more of these, and I get to see where he ends up."

Veteran actor William H. Macy is also part of the ensemble cast. "It's really well-layered and I played a character who is a bit of a turncoat to the human race."

Then there's Peter Macon...thrilled to play a wise and kind orangutan named Raka

"I really want to pour myself into something as challenging and difficult as this to grow and to move my personal needle as an artist," said Macon.

There's also the "king" himself...played with power by Kevin Durand.

"He's trying to save apedom from you stinky humans. You understand?" said Durand.

Then, in his character's voice, he added, "You humans mess everything up, kill each other, kill the land. I shall run the world from now on!"

Director Wes Ball talked about the end of this five-year journey.

"We left it all in the field: me, myself, the entire crew," said Ball. "We put everything we had into this, and we hope fans will love it just as much as we do."

You'll see "Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes" in theaters nationwide beginning May 10th.

  • With twists and turns that keep readers on edge, fans of Fullmetal Alchemist will find a new favorite in Daemons of the Shadow Realm.

The latest manga from Fullmetal Alchemist creator Hiromu Arakawa, Daemons of the Shadow Realm , was a return to the fantastical for the mangaka, but more than that, a return to many of the themes that made her previous hit series a success. Fans who've been longing for something like Fullmetal Alchemist may be pleasantly surprised that, despite some major differences, the two works have more in common than not.

Daemons of the Shadow Realm follows Yuru, a young boy from an isolated mountain village, who has a twin sister, Asa, who's being held in a cell near the center of town, allegedly for her own good and the good of the town. The twins' birth marked the beginning of a prophecy, kicking off a series of events that would eventually lead to the village being devastated by an attack from the outside world--an attack led by a woman who claims to be the real Asa, who escaped the village long ago.

Yuru is dragged into a massive conflict over who will control the prophesied power that the twins will inherit, but all he really wants is to be reunited with his long-lost family.

Daemons of the Shadow Realm Recaptures Much of Fullmetal Alchemist's Greatness

Much like Fullmetal Alchemist , Daemons of the Shadow Realm puts two siblings at the center of the story, but it does so by turning Ed and Al's relationship on its head. For Ed and Al, all they had was each other, but Yuru and Asa didn't even get to have each other for most of their lives. It gives the siblings a very different sort of relationship, with Yuru unable to fully trust Asa the way Ed and Al could trust each other. Yuru is very sheltered as a result of his village upbringing, despite being a skilled hunter and survivalist, while Asa is familiar with the ways of the real world.

Daemons of the Shadow Realm is set in a world much like the modern day, but for the existence of Daemons, spiritual beings that come in pairs and can be contracted with. Daemons largely take the role that Alchemy did in Fullmetal Alchemist ; it's a power that's complex, but able to be understood, and always works in predictable ways . Yuru contracts with the two guardian spirits of the village , known only as Left and Right, who turn out to be incredibly powerful. Daemons, however, have their own personalities, and sometimes even wills, making them much trickier to work with.

Another thing which the new series does well is recapture that uncertainty of who's good and who's bad. Every time it looks like there's a clear-cut villainous side, new information is revealed which justifies their behavior, making the conflict very morally gray. Akin to Ed working as a State Alchemist and "Dog of the Military," Yuru and Asa must make alliances which they aren't fully comfortable with.

Given the constant subversion of who's good and who's bad, it's difficult to talk about Daemons of the Shadow Realm without getting into spoiler territory. The twists and turns of the story are half the fun, so it's recommended that readers go into it with as little foreknowledge as possible. Almost 30 chapters in now, Daemons of the Shadow Realm has been picking up steam, but it's still early enough that diving into the story isn't a major time commitment. Fans of Fullmetal Alchemist should absolutely give Daemons of the Shadow Realm a shot.

Daemons of the Shadow Realm can be read on Square Enix's Manga Up! App.

The Secret Push That Could Ban TikTok

U.s. lawmakers have long worried that the chinese government could use the app to spread propaganda..

From “The New York Times,” I’m Sabrina Tavernise. And this is “The Daily.”

[THEME MUSIC]

American lawmakers have tried for years to ban the video app TikTok over concerns that its ties to China pose a national security risk. Last week, they passed a law that might finally do it. Today, my colleague, Sapna Maheshwari, on the secret effort behind the law and what a ban would mean for the company’s 170 million American users.

It’s Tuesday, April 30.

So Sapna, tell me about this law that just passed that potentially bans the social media app TikTok. We’ve seen efforts in the past to rein in TikTok, but this one really seems like the most substantial yet.

It’s a huge deal. What this law really does is it puts the future of this hugely popular app with 170 million American users into question. TikTok has reshaped the way many people listen to music. It’s changed the way we cook. It’s made a whole different kind of celebrity.

But it’s never been able to shake these concerns around the fact that it has really close ties to China. It’s owned by a Chinese company, ByteDance. And lawmakers, for years, have been worried that the Chinese government could somehow use ByteDance and TikTok to get information on Americans or possibly spread propaganda.

President Trump tried to ban it in 2020. The State of Montana tried to ban this app last year. TikTok has largely survived those challenges, but this time it could actually be banned in the United States.

So let’s talk about this. Why did this effort succeed where the other ones failed?

So it’s an interesting story.

Here we go.

The committee will come to order.

And it really dates back to this hearing about a year ago that Congress had with Shou Chew, the CEO of TikTok.

Mr. Chew, you are here because the American people need the truth about the threat TikTok poses to our national and personal security.

Members of the committee, thank you for your time.

— TikTok has repeatedly said that it has addressed these national security concerns and that there’s no issue here. And you can hear that when Shou Chew testified.

Let me start by addressing a few misconceptions about ByteDance of which we are a subsidiary. ByteDance is not owned or controlled by the Chinese government.

He’s saying American investors are behind ByteDance.

Now, TikTok itself is not available in mainland China. We’re headquartered in Los Angeles and in Singapore.

And I myself am Singaporean. I live in Singapore.

The bottom line is this — American data, stored on American soil, by an American company, overseen by American personnel.

And we are actually going above and beyond what American technology companies do to keep things safe.

And I look forward to your questions. Thank you very much.

And is Congress convinced by that?

Congress is not convinced by that.

ByteDance is a Chinese company?

Well, ByteDance owns many businesses that operates in China.

Is it or is it not a Chinese company?

Congressman, the way we look at it, it was founded by Chinese entrepreneurs.

No, no, no, no. I’m not asking how you look at it. Fact, is it a Chinese company or not? For example, Dell is a company —

It was this really fiery, five-hour hearing, where Republicans and Democrats asked really contentious questions.

We do not promote or remove content at the request of the Chinese government. Will you repeat —

The question is, are you percent certain that they cannot use your company to promote such messages?

It is our commitment to this committee and all our users that we will keep this free from any manipulation by any government.

OK. If you can’t say it 100 percent certain I take that as a no.

There’s this underlying sense of distrust around the company and its ties to China.

I will remind you that making false or misleading statements to Congress is a federal crime.

I understand. Again, you can go on our platform. You will find that content.

And it becomes clear through the hearing that, across the board, Republicans and Democrats largely feel the same way.

Mr. Chew, I got to hand it to you. You’ve actually done something that in the last three to four years has not happened except for the exception of maybe Vladimir Putin. You have unified Republicans and Democrats.

So within weeks of this hearing, this small group of lawmakers gets together. And they say, let’s come up with a law that works where all the other ones have failed and actually make TikTok answer to its Chinese connections once and for all.

So tell me about this small group of lawmakers. Who are they?

So it starts with Republicans. Among them is Steve Scalise, one of the most powerful Republicans in the House. And a small group sort of works together for a few months, but they realize that in order to really make this law work, they’re going to need Democrats. So they end up working through this House Committee that’s focused on China and competition. And this is where the bulk of the work on this bill takes place.

And just to note, this is a really small group. There’s less than 20 key players who are working on this. And all throughout, they are keeping this very, very secret.

And why exactly are they keeping it secret? What’s the point of that?

So this group really wanted to keep this out of the eyes of TikTok, which has a huge lobbying presence in DC, and has successfully worked to kill bills that targeted TikTok in the past. And what they’re really doing is looking at all of the past efforts to either force a sale or a ban of TikTok, and trying to work their way through why those plans didn’t succeed and what they can do differently.

But while the lawmakers are working on this bill, something big happens that kind of changes the politics around it. And that’s October 7.

Your social media feeds are unique to you, but could they be shaping how you view the Israel-Gaza War? The BBC’s —

As the war breaks out and people start getting information about it, a lot of people are getting information about the Israel-Hamas War on TikTok, especially young people.

Social media algorithms seem to be driving some users towards increasingly divisive posts —

And there’s this big messy argument spilling out into living rooms and all over the internet, and, of course on TikTok. And it’s getting very heated. For instance, there’s this moment in the fall where a bunch of TikTok users start sharing this old manifesto.

I read Osama bin Laden’s “Letter to America.”

It’s wild, and everyone should read it.

Go read “A Letter to America.” Seriously, go read it.

That was actually written by Osama bin Laden, defending the 9/11 attacks and criticizing the United States’ support of Israel. TikTok users start trying to tie it to the modern day conflict.

Reading this letter, it becomes apparent to me that the actions of 9/11 were all just the buildup of our government failing other nations.

The way this letter is going viral right now is giving me the greatest sense of relief. Now it’s all coming to light because of Palestine.

And there’s these accusations that TikTok may be promoting one side of the conflict over the other. And a couple of researchers look at hashtags around Palestine, and they say that the data they pulled shows that TikTok is showing way more pro-Palestine videos and not so much for Israel. And this sets off huge alarm bells for this small group of lawmakers.

But isn’t that just a function of the fact that TikTok, at this point, is the public square in the United States for young people? I mean, this is what young people were talking about, and this is where they’re doing the talking.

TikTok has pushed back really forcefully against these accusations. They said that Gallup polls show that young people view Israel differently than older generations. They say that they’re not the ones influencing what people post, that the hashtags and the videos are a reflection of the user base and nothing that they’re doing to influence.

But for lawmakers, this doesn’t really make their concerns go away. Instead, this conflict shows them how TikTok could be used to spread propaganda. It made lawmakers feel that TikTok could be really dangerous when it comes to shaping the views of Americans on foreign policy, on US elections. And what it also does is, it provides this driving force to this group that’s drafting this bill. And they suddenly see that this might be a way to bring more people into their effort.

And so heading into November against this backdrop, they even bring in the White House and the Justice Department to help work on this bill. And with the White House, they want to make sure that this is a bill that the president will support. And they work with the Justice Department to shore up the language in the bill to help defend against court challenges.

Because the Justice Department, of course, would be the one that would have to defend the bill, right?

That’s exactly right. And so they’re trying to make it as rock solid as possible so that they can win in court when TikTok challenges this law. And so March rolls around, and they decide that it’s time to unveil this bill that they’ve been working on for close to a year.

The battle over TikTok on Capitol Hill is intensifying.

This morning, House lawmakers have agreed unanimously to move a bill to a full floor vote.

And TikTok is caught completely flat footed. They didn’t see this coming. And this is just what the group wanted. So TikTok has this army of lobbyists that’s suddenly scrambling. And they go into damage control mode. They start reaching out to members of Congress.

This app is so much more than just an app for dumb TikTok dances.

They fly a group of TikTok stars and small businesses to come to DC —

This is a life-changing apps.

— and lobby on the steps of the Capitol and meet with lawmakers.

Standing up here with all these amazing TikTokers behind me is a complete honor, and every single one of them would voice their opinion just like this. This is how we feel. This has to stop.

They set up interviews between these TikTok creators, as they’re known, and big TV shows and news programs. And they’re doing everything they can to fight against this bill before it goes any further. And then they decide to do something unusual, which is use TikTok itself to try and derail this bill.

How exactly do they do that?

So days after this bill is announced, a ton of TikTok users get a message when they open the TikTok app that basically says, call Congress and tell them not to ban TikTok.

Hmm. OK. So like, literally this window comes up and says, call Congress. Here you go.

Exactly. You can enter your zip code, and there’s a button that appears. And you can press it, and the call goes straight to your representative.

So offices are quickly overwhelmed by calls. And TikTok sent out this message to users on the same day that a House committee is going into vote on this bill and whether to move it forward. And so the stunt happens. They go into vote, and they come out, and it’s 50 to 0 in support of the bill.

One of the representatives who worked on the bill said that this stunt by TikTok turned a lot of no’s into yeses and yeses into, quote, “hell yeses.”

[LAUGHS]: so the whole episode sounds like it actually backfired, right? Like, TikTok’s stunt essentially just confirmed what was the deepest fears of lawmakers about this company, that the app could be used to influence American politics.

That’s definitely how a lot of lawmakers viewed it. And when this bill is brought to the full House a week later, it passes by an overwhelming majority. And weeks later, it passes in the Senate as part of a broader aid package. And on Wednesday, it’s signed into law by President Biden.

But now the question is, what does it mean? Like, how will this actually work? And how will it affect the tens of millions of Americans who use TikTok every day?

[MUSIC PLAYING]

We’ll be right back.

So Sapna, now that Biden has signed this bill, what does it actually mean in practice for TikTok? What does the law do?

So the law is really trying to push ByteDance, the company that owns TikTok, to sell to a non-Chinese owner. And the company basically has nine months for this sale to happen. There’s an option for President Biden to add another three months to that clock. And if the company doesn’t find a buyer or refuses to be sold, it will be banned.

And what would a ban actually mean, Sapna? I mean, people would still have the app on their phones, right? So it wouldn’t disappear overnight.

Yeah, no one’s coming to pick up your phone and to forcibly delete this thing. What the law says is that app stores and web hosting services wouldn’t be allowed to carry TikTok anymore. So basically, it would kind of die a slow death over time, where it wouldn’t be updated and just kind of peter out.

So the bottom line here is that the clock has started on this potential sale, right? They have 12 months to find a buyer. So what are the obstacles here? I mean, it sounds pretty ferociously complicated.

There’s a ton of challenges here. And it’s a very messy choose-your-own adventure. So one of the first big questions is who could buy this?

ByteDance and TikTok are private. We don’t know their financials. But analysts estimate that it will cost tens of billions of dollars. That narrows the buying pool pretty quickly. And a lot of the companies that could afford to buy it, like Meta, the owner of Facebook, or Google, which owns YouTube, would probably be kicked out of the running because they are simply too big. Regulators would say, you already own these big apps. You can’t possibly add this to your stable.

There’d be a monopoly concern there.

Exactly. And then, there’s a lot of questions around how this would work, technically. ByteDance and TikTok are very much global organizations. You have the CEO in Singapore. They have huge operations in Ireland. They have this big workforce in the US. And of course, they do have engineers in China.

So how do you extract all those things, make it all work? It’s a very big international transaction.

And then there is the chance that the Chinese government blocks this sale and says, you cannot do this, ByteDance. We will not allow it.

So Sapna, how does that actually work, though, in terms of China? I mean, can China actually just ban the sale of this company? I mean, it is a private company after all, right?

Well, here’s one way it could work. The Chinese government could block the export of TikTok’s algorithm. And let me explain that in kind of plain English.

They could basically block the technology that fuels the TikTokiness of this app, the recommendations, the magic of it, why you see what you see when you’re looking at TikTok.

TikTokiness, is that an adjective?

That is now an adjective.

[LAUGHS]: Nice.

And there’s a chance that Beijing could say, hey, you can’t export this technology. That is proprietary. And if that happens, that suddenly makes TikTok way, way less valuable.

So the Chinese government could let the sale go through potentially, but as a kind of an empty shell, right? The thing that makes TikTok TikTok, the algorithm, wouldn’t be part of the company. So that probably isn’t very appealing for a potential buyer.

Exactly. And I mean, the role of the Chinese government here is really interesting. I’ve talked to experts who say, well, if the Chinese government interferes to try and block a sale of this app, doesn’t that underscore and prove all the concerns that have been expressed by American lawmakers?

If you’re worried about China being in control of this thing, well, that just confirmed your fears.

Exactly. And I mean, it’s an interesting thing that ByteDance and TikTok have to grapple with.

So bottom line here — selling TikTok is quite complicated, and perhaps not even possible for these reasons that you’re giving, right? I mean, not least of which because the Chinese government might not allow the algorithm to leave the country. And that’s not something that the US Congress has a lot of control over.

So is this law fundamentally just a ban, then?

That’s what TikTok is calling it. Right after this bill was signed into law on Wednesday —

Make no mistake, this is a ban, a ban on TikTok and a ban on you and your voice.

— Tiktok’s CEO made a TikTok — what else?— that explained the company’s position.

Because the freedom of expression on TikTok reflects the same American values that make the United States a beacon of freedom.

He actually argued that TikTok reflects American values.

TikTok gives everyday Americans a powerful way to be seen and heard. And that’s why so many people have made TikTok part of their daily lives.

And he said that this law infringes on the First Amendment free speech rights of Americans who love it and who use it every day.

The facts and the Constitution are on our side, and we expect to prevail again.

So it’s very clear that TikTok plans to challenge this law in court. And the court fight to follow will determine the fate of TikTok’s future in the US.

So is that First Amendment argument that the TikTok CEO is making here going to work?

Nobody wants to put money on that. I mean, the company is really approaching this with the idea that the First Amendment rights of Americans are being infringed on. But if you remember, the government has been working on this law. They’ve been anticipating those challenges. And they can justify an infringing of First Amendment rights in certain cases, including with national security concerns. And so it’ll be up to a judge on whether those concerns pass muster and justify this sale and even a potential ban of TikTok.

Got it. So TikTok will argue free speech, First Amendment. And the government will counter by saying, look, this is about China. This is about America’s national security interests.

That’s right. And the legal experts that I’ve spoken with say this is a really big and sticky area of the law, and it’s a huge case. And they really think that this will go to the Supreme Court, regardless of who wins in the first round of this.

So where does that leave the millions of Americans who use TikTok, and many of them, of course, who earn a living on the platform?

I mean, it’s really uncertain what happens now with the company, and the clock has started ticking. When I’ve looked at TikTok and looked at videos from users —

This is about the impending TikTok ban. And it just triggered me so much. It makes my blood boil, and I have to get this out there.

There’s a lot of shock —

The most success I’ve had has been here on TikTok, and now they’re trying to take it away.

This is so stupid!

— and anger.

You can’t ban apps! You can’t ban things from people!

People are confused.

Word on the street is that in the next 9 to 12 months, TikTok could be banned.

And they’re also caught a bit off guard, just because there have been these years of efforts to do something about TikTok. People on the app have been hearing about a TikTok ban, really, since 2020.

The government can take away a literal app on our phones, and we’re supposed to believe we’re free?

A few TikTokers have said, how can this be the thing that the government is pushing through so quickly?

Can we stop funding a genocide? No. Can we get free COVID tests? No. Can we stop killing the planet? No. Can we at least watch videos on an app of people doing fun things and learn about the world around us? No.

So there’s this sense of distrust and disappointment for many people who love this app.

We got rid of TikTok. You’re welcome. Protecting you from China. You know that phone was made in China. Ah!

And I think there’s also this question, too, around what about TikTok makes it so harmful? Even though it has increasingly become a place for news, there’s plenty of people who simply use this app for entertainment. And what they’re seeing out of Washington just doesn’t square with the reality they experience when they pull out their phones.

And I wonder, Sapna, I mean, just kind of stepping back for a second, let’s say this ban on TikTok succeeds. If it goes through, would Americans be better off?

It depends who you ask. For the users who love TikTok, if it actually disappeared, it would be the government taking away a place where maybe they make money, where they get their entertainment, where they figure out what to read or what to cook next. To free speech advocates, this would be dystopian, unheard of for the government to crack down on an app with such wide usage by Americans.

But for the American political class And the National security establishment, this is a necessary move, one that was years in the making, not something that was just come up with on the fly. And ultimately, it all comes down to China and this idea that you can’t have a social media app like this, a source of news like this, that is even at all at risk of being influenced by the Chinese government and our greatest adversaries.

Sapna, thank you.

Here’s what else you should know today. On Monday, in its latest high-profile showdown with pro-Palestinian protesters, Columbia University gave students until 2:00 PM to clear out from an encampment at the center of campus or face suspension. It appeared to be an effort to remove the encampment without relying on New York City Police, whose removal of a previous encampment there two weeks ago inspired similar protests on campuses across the country.

Free Palestine!

Hi, this is Sharon Otterman reporting for “The New York Times.”

00 PM deadline for protesters to clear out of the encampment at the center of Columbia University has come and gone, and there’s still quite a large contingent inside the encampment.

But Monday’s warning seemed only to galvanize the Columbia protesters and their supporters.

And hundreds of students and others from around the campus have come out to support them. They are currently walking around in a picket around the encampment.

Hundreds of students, standing for or five people deep, encircled the encampment in a show of solidarity. They were joined by members of the Columbia faculty.

There’s also dozens of faculty members, who are prepared to stand in lines in front of the main entrance to the encampment, in case Public Safety or the NYPD move in. But as of 2:00, there was no sign of that happening.

Then, on Monday evening, Columbia announced it had begun to suspend students who had failed to leave the encampment. It was unclear exactly how many students had been suspended.
