Having chalked up over fifty years at the peak of the music and entertainment industry, Justin Hayward’s voice has been heard the world over.  Known principally as the vocalist, lead guitarist and composer for the Moody Blues, his is an enduring talent that has helped to define the times in which he worked. Over the years the band has sold more than fifty five million albums and received numerous awards. Commercial success has gone hand in hand with critical acclaim and The Moody Blues are renowned the world over as innovators and trail blazers who have influenced any number of fellow artists.  In 2018, along with the other members of The Moody Blues, Justin was inducted into the legendary Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Born and brought up in Swindon in the UK, Justin’s interest in music started early when he was five years old and his grandfather bequeathed him his large collection of 78 rpm recordings. “It opened a world of imagination to me,” says Justin.  Having taught himself to play the ukulele, he soon progressed to guitar and by his early teens he was playing in local groups.  Upon leaving school at 17 he answered an advertisement in Melody Maker newspaper and successfully auditioned for UK Rock and Roll hero Marty Wilde. “I got the job playing guitar for Marty – it was a dream come true for me”. Justin credits Marty with encouraging him to become a songwriter; he made several recordings with Marty’s ‘Wilde Three’ and also appeared with them at the London Palladium.  They remain close friends to this day: “Marty is still my hero”. Having started the ball rolling as a songwriter in his own right with a couple of solo singles, he joined the Moody Blues in the summer of 1966. Hitting his stride immediately with the single ‘Fly Me High’, he followed it up with the classic hit songs ‘Nights in White Satin’ and ‘Tuesday Afternoon’ from the seminal album ‘Days of Future Past’. This album went on to become a favourite of the NASA astronauts and was taken aboard the Atlantis shuttle space craft by Chief astronaut “Hoot” Gibson on many missions.

This purple patch showed no sign of abating as Justin created other classic, era and genre-defining hits ‘Question’, ‘The Voice’, ‘The Story In Your Eyes’, ‘I Know You’re Out There Somewhere’ and ‘Your Wildest Dreams’.  These laid the foundation for the incredible success story of the Moody Blues – as well as his solo work – which continues to this day. When the Moody Blues took a break from touring in 1975, Justin worked on the Blue Jays album, followed by the hit single ‘Blue Guitar’ (recorded with the members of 10cc). Although the Moodies continued to record and tour at the highest level, Justin also found time to create several solo albums: ‘Songwriter’, ‘Night Flight’, ‘Moving Mountains’ and ‘The View From the Hill’. Justin hit the Top Ten globally in 1978 with ‘Forever Autumn’ – created for Jeff Wayne’s ‘War of the Worlds’ album.  Becoming signature song, this was the spur to him taking to the stage – for five years, from 2005 – 2010, and starring in the spectacular live stadium production. In the 1980s he was made a member of the famous ‘SODS’  (The Society of Distinguished Songwriters) and in 2012 he was elected ‘King SOD’.  He also collaborated in 1989 with Mike Batt and the London Philharmonic Orchestra and recorded the album ‘Classic Blue’. In March 1997 Justin was chosen as the subject for the TV show ‘This Is Your Life’ in the presence of many of his friends including Marty Wilde, Lionel Bart and astronaut “Hoot” Gibson. In 2005 he was presented with ‘The Golden Note’ award from ASCAP, the top honour for a British writer, and he has appeared in Nashville regularly with other songwriters in showcase events. In 2013 The Performing Rights Society in the UK awarded him his second Ivor Novello statue for ‘Outstanding Achievement’.

Whilst releasing solo albums and DVDs and working on many different projects, including new solo recordings, Justin continued tour with the Moody Blues all across the world. Justin records in Italy and France of which he says, “Spending time making music in a beautiful place with your friends is every songwriter’s dream”. His  album of new songs ‘Spirits Of The Western Sky’ – for Eagle Rock – was followed by several solo tours, and a ‘live in concert’ DVD ‘Spirits…Live’, which reached No1 on the Billboard Video chart. “My solo tours give the perfect balance to the big production of the Moody Blues concerts. I’m so lucky to have both”.  Spirits Of The Western Sky (Eagle Rock Ent.) was followed by 2016’s All The Way (Eagle Rock Ent.) - a compilation of Hayward’s most popular solo work and live performances of Moody Blues classics and in 2021 Justin released two more new solo songs One Summer Day / My Juliette (Eagle Rock Ent.)

In 2022 Justin was featured in the on stage revival of Jeff Wayne’s epic production ‘The War Of The Worlds Live’, playing to sold out stadiums across the UK. In June of 2022 he was awarded an O.B.E in the late Queen Elizabeth’s birthday honours list. To coincide with his 2023 solo tours Justin has released his brand new single ‘Living For Love’ on BMG records.

He is consistently touring the globe as a solo artist – accompanied by Julie Ragins on vocals and keyboards, flute player Karmen Gould and guitar player Mike Dawes, one of a new generation of brilliant and exceptionally gifted young players.

“I have spent most of my life, so far, on the road.’ says Justin, “and playing live and creating a small piece of magic in a room is like a drug to me, one that I never want to give up”.  His is a talent that has helped soundtrack more than a generation and created a legacy that remains undimmed.

Justin Hayward Still Has The Zest To Perform, Delivers A Gem Of A Show

justin hayward tour 2023

Justin Hayward who was the main vocalist of the renowned Moody Blues, made his way to the Vine Showroom Saturday night. He took the fans for a bit of a stroll down memory lane but also delivered a pristine sounding set. Not only did the fans get quite a few of the classic hits of the Moody Blues but Hayward talked about a few of the songs giving it a storytellers feel throughout the 85-minute acoustic set.

The show began with Hayward taking the stage and starting things off with the solo track “Eastern Sun” culled from his 2013 release Spirits of the Western Sky. From there he was intermittently joined by long-time keyboardist Julie Ragins, flutist Karmen Gould and guitarist Mike Dawes. Dawes also served as the opener and during his 25-minute set he played just an acoustic guitar and added quirky commentary making the show start with a twist. Hayward then played a batch of Moody Blues songs most notably “Tuesday Afternoon” which really drew a big response from the crowd as soon as they heard the opening chords. Lesser known songs such as “The Actor” and “Hope and Pray” went over very well.

One of the many highlights was “The Voice”. The 1981 classic played acoustically was unique and yet sounded very standard at the same time. Ragins bolstered the song with her aptly timed vocals giving it a different yet familiar flavor. But it wasn’t until “Your Wildest Dreams” where the show really kicked into gear. Very methodically they played what this reviewer feels was the best song of the night in “Question”. Simply stunning to hear this one and it was performed with such zest. Closing out the main set with the highest charting song the Moodies ever had in the stellar “Nights in White Satin” was a great way to end.

Back for two more songs, the band chose to close with the vastly underrated “The Story In Your Eyes” while capping things off with the last charting song the Moodies had with “I Know You’re Out There Somewhere”. It was simply amazing to see a show of this caliber at this point in the career of Justin Hayward. His voice to this point remains as vibrant as it was when he first joined the Moody Blues.

With the Moody Blues being put out to pasture following the retirement (2018) and subsequent passing (2021) of founding member Graeme Edge, it is now up to Hayward and bassist/vocalist John Lodge to keep the music of the band alive. With their enshrinement into the Rock Hall in 2018 and the many bands they influenced, their legacy will live on forever regardless.

Set List The Eastern Sun Driftwood (Moody Blues Song) Tuesday Afternoon (Moody Blues Song) The Actor (Moody Blues Song) Hope and Pray (Moody Blues Song) The Western Sky The Voice (Moody Blues Song) Living for Love Forever Autumn Never Comes the Day (Moody Blues Song) Your Wildest Dreams (Moody Blues Song) Question (Moody Blues Song) Nights in White Satin (Moody Blues Song)

Encore The Story in Your Eyes (Moody Blues Song) I Know You’re Out There Somewhere (Moody Blues Song)

Justin Hayward is preparing for the launch of his The V oice of the Moody Blues UK tour next month, and already looking forward to live dates stretching into next year.

The itinerary begins in Milton Keynes on September 11 and includes ten concerts, finishing on the 23rd and including a London appearance at Union Chapel on September 19. The tour comes in the wake of Hayward’s appearance in the touring production of Jeff Wayne’s Musical Version of The War of The Worlds – Alive on Stage!

Subtitled Life Begins Again , the musical spectacular saw him reprising his role as the Sung Thoughts of the Journalist, singing the signature hits from the original smash hit album, “Forever Autumn” and “The Eve of the War.” “It was extraordinary to be a part of it,” he tells the Express & Star in Birmingham, the city that was the home base of the Moody Blues when Hayward and John Lodge joined in 1966. “I got that vibe when I came on for ‘Eve Of The War.’ It was almost as though the audience felt: ‘Oh, it’s him, we’re in safe hands.’”

Hayward, who became an O.B.E. in the Queen’s 2022 Birthday Honours List, followed that production with another round of dates in the US in May and June. His UK run includes a Birmingham Town Hall show on September 12, and he will host the On The Blue Cruise between January 28 and February 2, 2023. He tells the Express & Star he continues to get a huge thrill from live performance.

“I still look forward to being on the road, very much,” he says. “I love being with the crew and the other musicians. That’s where I’m completely happy. I hope the phone keeps ringing. I’ve got gigs coming up next year. I’m still offered gigs, which is really great.

“It’s all about the songs really. I feel that the songs mean a lot to people. They have a place in people’s lives. I know exactly that feeling because I know what songs mean to me. I can listen to a Dusty Springfield song and be transported back to a time and a place. I feel very lucky to have that, to have that catalog of songs.”

Tickets for Justin Hayward’s UK tour are available via his website .

justin hayward tour 2023

Having chalked up nearly fifty years at the peak of the music and entertainment industry, Justin Hayward’s voice has been heard the world over.  Known principally as the vocalist, lead guitarist and composer for the Moody Blues, his is an enduring talent that has helped to define the times in which he worked. Over the last forty-five years the band has sold fifty five million albums and received numerous awards. Commercial success has gone hand in hand with critical acclaim, The Moody Blues are renowned the world over as innovators and trail blazers who have influenced any number of fellow artists.  Justin is honoured with the Moody Blues on the Rock Walk Hall of Fame on Sunset Boulevard.

This purple patch showed no sign of abating as Justin created other classic, era and genre-defining hits ‘Question’, ‘The Voice’, ‘I Know You’re Out There Somewhere’ and ‘Your Wildest Dreams’.

Proving that he could write massive hits outside of the Moody Blues, Justin hit the Top Ten globally in 1978 with ‘Forever Autumn’ – created for Jeff Wayne’s ‘War of the Worlds’ album.  Becoming, even for a writer of his stature, a signature song, this was the spur to him taking to the stage – for five years, from 2005 – 2010, and starring in the spectacular live stadium production.

Whilst releasing solo albums and DVDs and working on many different projects, including new solo recordings, Justin continues to tour with the Moody Blues all across the world. Justin records in Italy and France of which he says, “Spending time making music in a beautiful place with your friends is every songwriter’s dream”. His latest album of new songs ‘Spirits Of The Western Sky’ – for Eagle Rock – was followed by several solo tours, and most recently a ‘live in concert’ DVD ‘Spirits…Live’, which reached No1 on the Billboard Video chart. “My acoustic solo tours give the perfect balance to the big production of the Moody Blues concerts. I’m so lucky to have both”. His live solo show is currently being shown all over the USA on PBS TV.

He is consistently touring the globe with The Moody Blues, and as a solo artist – accompanied by Julie Ragins, and Mike Dawes, one of a new generation of young exceptional and gifted guitar players.

“I have spent most of my life, so far, on the road”, says Justin. “Playing live and creating a small piece of magic in a room is like a drug to me, one that I never want to give up”. His is a talent that has helped soundtrack more than a generation and created a legacy that remains undimmed.
