Suffering from the high altitude sickness is the most concerned issue of a Kailash tour. Based on our over 20 years' experience in Tibet tourism, there is no need to worry too much about it. High altitude sickness is the very normal reaction when entering the highland, usually, you will feel a little bit headache, sleepness, chest distress. However, since our Kailash Manasavor yatra always starts with at least 4 days in Lhasa, which will help you get acclimatized to the high altitude. It is helpful to drink more hot water and have some fruit. Please remember to not have shower every day and do not take the risk of washing your hair or body with snow or stream. Otherwise, catching cold would be extremely dangerous at high altitude.

1. where is mt.kailash and how to get there.

Mount Kailash, situated in the far west of Ngari, Tibet, is approximately 1500 kilometers from Lhasa and 700 kilometers from Gyirong port at the Sino-Nepal border. If traveling from Kathmandu to Mount Kailash, the journey extends to around 820 kilometers.

You can get to Mount Kailash from Lhasa by land, which takes around 13 to 16 days with sightseeing en route and a night stay at the Everest Base Camp. Alternatively, you can travel to Mount Kailash from Kathmandu via the Gyirong border. It generally takes 10 days by land.

The nearest airport to Mount Kailash is Ngari Gunsa Airport, offering flights from Lhasa, Kashgar, Urumqi, Chengdu, and Xian. Opting for a quicker route, you can fly from Lhasa to Ngari Gunsa Airport (within 3 hours) and then drive the remaining 250 kilometers to Mount Kailash in about 5 hours. Due to limited flight schedules, plan accordingly.

TThe road condition of western Tibet has been greatly improved in recent years. Most of the roads from Lhasa to Mount Kailash are well paved, except for a gravel stretch near Lake Manasarovar.

4. High Altitude of the Mt.Kailash and Lake Manasarova

Mount Kailash proudly stands at an elevation of 6638 meters, while Lake Manasarovar sits gracefully at 4590 meters above sea level.

The average altitude of the Mount Kailash trek is above 4500 meters, during which you will cross the Dromala Pass (5630 meters) - the highest point along the trekking route.

Since you will trek for at least 4 days for such a high altitude, you may face the challenge of altitude sickness, often experiencing symptoms like headaches, sleeplessness, and chest distress.

To help you adjust to the high altitude of the Tibetan Plateau, our Kailash Manasarovar Yatra starts with at least 3 days in Lhasa. As you go west to Shigatse and Everest, your body gets used to the increasing altitude.

To feel better at high altitudes, drink lots of hot water, eat fruits, and cut back on daily showers. Don't risk washing with snow or stream water—it's super risky in the cold at these heights.

5. Best Time to Visit the Mt.Kailash and Lake Manasarovar

The best time for the Kailash Manasarovar Yatra is from April to October each year, featuring an average temperature of 9.5°C. Daytime temperatures typically range from 10-15°C, while nighttime temperatures can drop below freezing, resulting in a substantial temperature difference between day and night.

The Mount Kailash region experiences minimal rainfall, though July and August are the rainy seasons, often accompanied by the appearance of rainbows.

During the remaining months, expect clear blue skies, white clouds, diverse vegetation, and May stands out as the best time to witness the breathtaking beauty of Kelsang flowers.

6. Accommodation of the Kailash Manasarovar Tour/Yatra

The accommodation conditions at Mount Kailash are quite basic - almost basic dorm beds in guesthouses and small inns. Generally, guesthouse rooms along the Kora route can accommodate 3 to 4 people, with shared toilets available on each floor.

It’s worth noting that private bathrooms or bathing facilities are not accessible during the Kailash kora. To ensure basic cleanliness, it's recommended to bring wet wipes along.

7. Drinking Water along the Kailash Manasarovar Tour/Yatra

During the Kailash kora, there are tent tea houses that provide hot drinks such as Tibetan butter tea, sweet tea, and bottled water for both tourists and pilgrims. Additionally, guesthouses along the trail offer boiled water for guests. You can bring your personal bottles to fill with drinking water at these points or carry some bottled water. It's important to note that drinking water directly from taps or rivers is not recommended.

8. Food along the Kailash Manasarovar Tour/Yatra

During the Kailash Manasarovar Yatra, dining options remain quite basic, with tent tea houses and monastery guesthouses offering simple fare such as instant noodles and egg-fried rice. As fresh meat and vegetables are scarce in the local area, and all ingredients are sourced from larger cities like Lhasa and Shigatse, the cost of a meal is relatively higher compared to other cities.

To maintain your energy levels during the journey, it's recommended to bring along some chocolate or energy bars for the hike.

9. Travel Permit of Kailash Manasarovar Tour/Yatra

The first necessary travel document is the Chinese Visa. Once you have your Chinese and a valid passport, you can proceed to apply for the Tibet Travel Permit.

The Tibet Travel Permit is required for entering the Tibet Autonomous Region. Without the Tibet permit, you can not board a flight or train to Tibet.

Since Mount Kailash is situated in the remote western part of the Tibet Autonomous Region, additional travel documents are necessary for your visit, such as the Alien’s Travel Permit and the Military Permit.

Har har mahadev,I had a strong desire to visit Kailash Mansarovar, When I started searching for good tour operator, It was very difficult to identify the best one as all were promising the best. In the process when I contacted Max Holidays and asked the contact number of a person who visited Kailash last year, I was provided the number of three person and I contacted one Mr.Nirankar Agarwal who explained the entire process of yatra and with his satisfied experience with Max, I along with two colleagues took up the journey with the Max. Day 3:Fly Nepalgunj – Simikot (2900m) – Overnight in Simikot

Enjoy your breakfast early in the morning, then proceed for a Tanah Lot Temple Tour. This temple is built on a temple and is famous for having a spectacular panoramic view of the sunset.

Day 4: Heli to Hilsa (3700m) & Drive to Taklakot (3900m) – Overnight in Taklakot

Morning – Take Helicopter to Hilsa (20 min – 12kg weight limit) & wait for other members to arrive at Hilsa (since it is a group visa and everyone have to enter Tibet side in one group) Afternoon – From Hilsa drive to Purang border to Taklakot (27 km) and stay at Hotel. We will stay overnight at Taklakot. (On the way we have to pass upto 3 Checkpoints where checking might take upto 1 hr in each post)

Day 5:At Taklakot (3900m) – Rest Day – Overnight in Taklakot

All Day – Entire day free for Acclimatization

Day 6:Drive to Manasarovar Lake (4550m) – Overnight in Mansarovar

After Breakfast – Drive towards Manasarovar Lake (95 km). On the way you will have to pass the first checkpoint. Then after driving for 70 kms from Taklakot we will reach Rakshas Tal. On the right of Rakshas Tal you will see Gurla Mandhata Parvat & first view of Mount Kailash and Manasarovar lake. Drive from Rakshas Tal to Manasarovar Lake (25 km). Start Parikrama of Manasarovar Lake (90 km – 3hr by Private A/C Coach). Perform Puja.

Day 7:1st Day of Parikrama – Drive to Darchen (4650m) & Yama Dwar & Trek to Dirapuk (4880m) – Overnight in Dirapuk

After Breakfast – Drive to Darchen (35 km – 1 hr) and Yama Dwar (8 km) – the starting point for Kora. We will trek to Dirapuk for 14 km. You will visit the North face of Mt. Kailash and touching the feet of Mt. Kailash (Charan Sparsha). Travelers who do not want to trek around (Parikrama) Mt. Kailash can go back to Darchen wait for rest of the group to arrive from Parikrama. Meal: Breakfast at Manasarovar, Lunch & Dinner on the way during Parikrama

Day 8:2nd Day of Parikrama – On to Zuthulpuk (4670m) via Trek to Dolma La Pass (5700m) – Overnight in Zuthulpuk

After Breakfast – Trek from Dirapuk to Dolma La Pass (8 km). About 3 kms before reaching Dolma La Pass is steep hill and quite difficult to walk. Also descending from Dolma La Pass is the same for upto 3 km. While descending you can see Gaurikund on the right. After walking for about 2 – 3 hrs we will reach Phedi. After some rest we will start trek to Zuthulpuk (12 km trek for 6 hours).

Day 9:3rd Day of Parikrama – Trek to Darchen – Drive to Hilsa via Taklakot – Overnight in Hilsa / Simikot

After Breakfast – After short easy Trek (8 km – 3 hrs), we will reach our Private A/C Coach pick up point. Then drive to Darchen (3 kms) and merge with other members who were waiting. From there drive to Hilsa (also we will take helicopter to Simikot based on situation)

Day 10:Fly Hilsa – Simikot – Nepalgunj & Fly back to Kathmandu – Overnight in Kathmandu

Fly to Hilsa to Simikot (20 mins) by Helicopter – Fly from Simikot to Nepalgunj (around 1 hr)/ Surkhet and fly back to Kathmandu (or proceed to Lucknow by Road)

Day 11:Transfer to Kathmandu Airport

About Kailash Manasarovar Yatra

The heavenly abode of lord shiva, mount kailash.

Considered one of the most ardently followed holy places in this world. Located at an immensely high altitude of 22,000 feet, only a limited number of pilgrims are able to have glimpses of this divine hub every year. Mount Kailash is clipped in the Kailash Range and is an indispensable part of Tibet’s Trans-Himalaya.

Millions of devotees are keen to participate in this Kailash Yatra , majorly with the intention of indulging in Mount Kailash’s Parikrama as well as the divine dip in the pristine water of the Mansarovar Lake. These two spiritual activities are notified as assistance for these people to swipe off their sins and get relieved from the negativity, thus, achieving salvation. The Yatra is open for anyone whose age falls between 18-70 years and can be undertaken either by foot, helicopters, buses, or standardized land cruisers.

Carrying an astounding religious importance, Mount Kailash is worldly prominent as a Spiritual lesson-packed pious destination and has crossed all the limits of followers and the sense of divinity associated with it. The peak carries a prominent relevance among Hindus and Buddhists, but both of these religions have different opinions about this pilgrimage center. However, as told by the Jains, this is the Moksha Attainment Place of the first Jain Tirthankara i.e. Rishabhanatha. Despite the two ways in which this divine peak can be visited, the people here believe in going to this place on foot as, according to them, walking around Mount Kailash in a clockwise direction brings good fortune in their life. It is greatly believed that a pilgrim cannot attend the religious ceremonies of this place until and unless he has been ‘called’ by Lord Shiva. Whereas it is a real thing that the people coming here think that completing the walk around the peak in a single day is a great sign, this is not at all an easy task.

It is believed that Lord Shiva, along with his wife Parvati, resides at the summit of this peak, which no one has reached till now. This pious destination carries major unsolved mysteries along with it, with one of them questioning Kailash, as many consider the same as the central point of Earth. But the answer to this question is still myriad. Mount Kailash stands out of the crowd as it is the sole peak that is an ‘unclimbed’ one till now.
