10 Years Later: All the Details From Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes' Lavish Italian Wedding

The stars became husband and wife in an elaborate celebration at a castle in bracciano.

"I think every little girl dreams about [her wedding]," Katie Holmes said in an interview with  Seventeen  in 2004. "I used to think I was going to marry Tom Cruise ."

"So let it be written, so let it be done."

As fate would have it, her childhood wishes came true less than a year later when, newly split from fiancé Chris Klein , she accepted the Oscar winner's marriage proposal, subsequently gave birth to the couple's only child, Suri , and went on to marry her girlhood crush in one of the most significant wedding ceremonies in Hollywood history.

As pop culture history goes, the marriage ended in a divorce settlement five and a half years later with primary legal custody of Suri granted to her mother.

Nevertheless, for nostalgia's sake, today marks a different milestone for those vows—their 10-year anniversary. On this day in 2006, the actors became husband and wife inside Bracciano, Italy's 15th-century Odescalchi Castle, a celebration that reportedly cost them upwards of $3 million. 

With a price tag that grand, Tom and Katie's wedding cemented itself in celebrity bridal history. From the cream of the crop Hollywood guest list and double wedding gowns to a dinner serenade by  Andrea Bocelli , it seems no expense was spared on the night Holmes became Mrs.  Tom Cruise . 

"If you get invited to that wedding, you go," Brooke Shields , a guest at the wedding, told Jenny McCarthy  in an interview on her  SiriusXM show  in January.  

Before the wedding could begin, the bride needed a gown—or two. Holmes sported two dresses during the special night, both designed by wedding attendee Giorgio Armani . For the ceremony, the  Ray Donovan  actress donned an off-the-shoulder silk and lace design adorned with Swarovski crystals. The crystals alone took 350 hours to place, as People reported at the time.

Then, she switched into a one-shoulder off-white silk organza number embellished with more Swarovski crystals.

Katie wasn't the only one to dazzle the crowd in Armani—her groom and the wedding party all wore the label for the special night. 

"Katie wanted a simple, elegant dress," Armani told People  at the time. "I wanted to make it modern but at the same time complement the sweetness and energy she conveys."

As fans would learn years later, Holmes accessorized with "something old" gifted to her by Shields. After being publicly criticized by Cruise for taking prescription medication for her postpartum depression, Shields said the actor came to her home to apologize. Soon after, she got a call from Holmes to invite her to their Italian nuptials. 

"She said, 'It just wouldn't feel right without you there,'" Shields told McCarthy during the interview in January. "And I said 'OK, I'll bring the something old, as long as it's not me!' And she said, 'would you?'"

The former face of Calvin Klein ultimately delivered the bride-to-be an antique enamel compact. 

The supermodel was just one name on the sprawling VIP list of famous attendees, which included  Will Smith  and  Jada Pinkett Smith , fellow Scientologists  John Travolta  and  Kelly Preston , David Beckham and Victoria Beckham , Jenny McCarthy and then-partner  Jim Carrey ,  Marc Anthony and Jennifer Lopez and former Scientologist Leah Remini . 

Once inside the castle's armory doors, guests were greeted by flag bearers sporting traditional Renaissance attire. With Cruise's older children, Connor and Isabella , Holmes' maid of honor, sister Nancy Blaylock , and Cruise's best man, Scientology leader David Miscavige , present, the couple took part in Scientology's traditional "double ring" ceremony and sealed it with a kiss. 

What followed was a seemingly endless celebration that carried into different halls of the castle, as People  described at the time. After a round of toasts, the bride danced with her father,  Martin Holmes , to  Louis Armstrong 's "What a Wonderful World" and joined Cruise for their first dance to  Fleetwood Mac 's "Songbird."

"It didn't take much time before I realized this Tom guy was a special guy—that he loved Katie, that he cared for her and supported her," Martin said during a toast at their rehearsal dinner at the Villa Aurelia. "Tonight, I am extremely proud and happy to raise my glass to Katie and Tom."

One five-tier wedding cake and fireworks display later, the guests danced the night away with music producer Mark Ronson spinning tunes and Lopez jumping in to perform one of her songs live when it came on. 

A nostalgic moment arrived when Cruise sang  The Righteous Brothers ' "You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling" to his bride—a nod to his iconic performance in  Top Gun . 

Of course, the song now seems like a moment of foreboding as, five and a half years after they wrapped the late-night festivities and boarded a jet to the Maldives for their honeymoon, Holmes filed for divorce . The two have not remarried and Holmes continues to live with her daughter.

While their high-profile relationship was a subject of controversy and speculation since Cruise first jumped on Oprah Winfrey 's couch, the actress recently revealed she wouldn't do it differently. 

"I really enjoy my life," she told Ocean Drive   a year ago. "I don't really regret anything that I've done. I've learned from everything, and everything sort of leads you to the next place. I just keep going."

Actors Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes have flown to the Maldives for theirhoneymoon afterexchanging vows at their wedding in a 15th-century castle north of Rome on Saturday.

Holmes wore a fitted Giorgio Armani off-the-shoulder bridal gown with a train of ivory silk, lace and beaded crystal embroidery. Cruise wore a handmade Armani tuxedo at the ceremony presided over by a Scientology minister.

Cruise's best friend, David Miscavige, was best man, and Holmes's sister, Nancy Blaylock, was the matron of honour.

The couple, who have a baby daughter, Suri,landed in Italy earlier this week ahead of their wedding at Odescalchi Castle in the town of Bracciano,43 kilometres north of Rome.

The sun was shining as Cruise arrived wearing sunglasses. Fans shouted "Tom, Tom!" as he waved from the back seat of a van.

Some 6,000 candles lined the entrance to the castle, its towers and windows. The wedding and reception reportedly cost $2.5 million US.

Celebrities on the guest list included actors Will and Jada Pinkett Smith, soccer star David Beckham and his wife, Victoria, Jennifer Lopez, Marc Anthony, Mission Impossible: III director J.J. Abrams, director Steven Spielberg and actors John Travolta, Richard Gere, Russell Crowe, Kirstie Alley, Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie and Jim Carrey.

Notably, actress Brooke Shields was also invited. Shields and Cruise had a public spat overher use of anti-depressants for postpartum depression. The two made up earlier this year.

The castle, which can host up to 1,400 guests, is adorned with six towers, gardens and a nearby chapel.The medieval structure also has a library with a frescoed ceiling and a loggia looking out on the lake.It was also the location of the 1998 wedding between CNN foreign correspondent Christiane Amanpour and James Rubin, then the spokesman for the U.S. StateDepartment.

Hundreds of photographers as well as residents and fans crowded in front of the town's square outside the castle.

Police were seen patrolling the walls of the castle and all vehicles werebanned from the centre of town.

Bracciano residents celebrate nuptials

One café had a sign which read: "Wishing you love and happiness."

A restaurant in the town was offering a "Tom e Kat" —a basket of parmesan cheese with truffles and mushrooms.

Scientology weddings include traditional elements such as rings and vows as well as a pledge never to go to bed without talking about any differences or problems.

Steps were taken to make marriage legal

The ceremony also stresses a tenet known as ARC: A for affinity, R for reality and C for communication.

The Scientology rite is not legally recognized in Italy and would have to be preceded or followed by a civil union. Cruise's publicist said "the required steps were taken for the marriage to be legal."

Cruise was once married to Nicole Kidman, withwhom he adopted two children — they were among the 150 people attending the wedding. The Australian actress sent her ex-husband andHolmes an expensive vase, wishing them a "lifetime of happiness."

Kidman married country crooner Keith Urban in a lavish event in Sydney, Australia, in March.Urban recently entered alcohol rehabilitation.

Tom Cruise to Wed at Odesalchi Castle

A picturesque medieval castle north of Rome is widely believed to be the secret location selected by Hollywood star Tom Cruise to wed his fiancée Katie Holmes later this month.

The 12th-century Castello Odescalchi, which overlooks Lake Bracciano, is a popular choice for VIP parties. It can host about 1,300 guests at a time and has its own private chapel.

The managers of the castle venue, which is owned by Princess Maria Pace Odescalchi, denied a press report that the long-awaited wedding was to take place there.

But the mayor of Bracciano, Patrizia Riccioni, revealed later that Princess Odescalchi has asked for the piazza in front of her castle to be closed to traffic on November 18, the day when Cruise and Holmes are to marry.

"This coincidence seems to be a pretty strong clue," she said. "Everything points to the Cruise-Holmes wedding taking place in Bracciano, where there will be a succession of international stars".

There was no immediate word from the golden couple itself.

Just where Cruise will wed his actress fiancée on November 18 has been showbiz's best-kept secret ever since the pair announced last month that they would be tying the knot somewhere in Italy.

Two plush Italian lakeside villas, George Clooney's on Lake Como and a former Mussolini residence on Lake Garda, have both appeared in gossip mags.

But on Tuesday Rome's Il Messaggero reported that the ceremony would be held at the Odescalchi castle, an atmospheric site which has hosted kings and a pope in its long history.

In recent years Italian pop star Eros Ramazzotti and top CNN reporter Christiane Amanpour chose it for their weddings.

Il Messaggero said there would be a star-studded party at the castle on November 16, a Catholic wedding ceremony the next day and a final ritual on November 18 presided over by an official of Scientology, the religious sect to which Cruise belongs.

Fabrizio D'Agostino, Rome representative for the Church of Scientology, said he had not been contacted by Cruise and Holmes. But he added that this might not be significant. "They don't have to contact me. They could choose whichever minister they want," he said.

It was unclear how Cruise could be married in a Catholic ceremony when he has already been married twice.

ARMANI STYLE AT WEDDING.

Italian weekly Chi confirmed Il Messaggero's version in a report of its own. It said the organisation of the three-day event was being handled by stylist Giorgio Armani, at a cost of 1.5 million euros.

Armani is known to be providing Holmes' wedding gown and Cruise's suit.

Chi's report claimed that the couple were spending 5,000 euros on embroidered bedroom towels to be given to their guests in the castle. The towels will bear the bride and groom's initials and be coloured according to sex: men's towels matching Cruise's wedding suit and women's matching his bride's dress.

The event is certain to have a strong Italian flavour. As well as saying their vows on Italian soil and wearing Armani creations, the couple will reportedly be drinking Italian wine and giving each other rings made by an Italian jeweller.

Roman gossip gurus think the actor will be turning to his favourite Italian restaurant, Dal Bolognese in Rome's Piazza del Popolo, to handle catering at the snazziest celebrity wedding in years.

Cruise, 44, and Holmes, 27, have been together for about 18 months. In April this year Holmes gave birth to a baby girl, who they called Suri.

It was in Rome that the actor, during a flying visit for the presentation of his film Mission Impossible III, told the world about his new enthusiasm for changing diapers.

Has anyone ever been more in love than couch-jumping Tom Cruise and  Katie Holmes ? We'll wait. Beginning in 2005, the actress and  fashion icon  (not just anyone can  pull off socks over sweatpants , alright?) engaged in a whirlwind romance with PDA-filled red carpet appearances that solidified their public image as TomKat. Within a year of meeting, they were engaged and welcomed a child together. A few months later, they tied the knot (Holmes's first marriage and Cruise's third). While many believed that the union wouldn't last — and it ultimately didn't — the pair still went on to share nearly six years together as husband and wife.

Since their 2012 divorce, we're remembering the Hollywood couple that once gave every teenager a glimmer of hope that it was possible — although highly unlikely — that maybe, just maybe, the dream of marrying their celebrity crush could become a reality.

Here's a look back at Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise's relationship.

April 2005: Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes first meet and are spotted together

As the story goes, after Cruise divorced  Nicole Kidman  and subsequently  split from then-girlfriend Penelope Cruz , the  Mission: Impossible  actor's beloved Church of Scientology set out to find him a worthy (and malleable) wife. After reportedly courting (and ultimately scaring off) famous women like  Sofía Vergara  and  Scarlett Johansson , the task proved more difficult than expected.

Eventually, church officials' prayers were answered through a  Seventeen  article,  per HuffPost . In October 2004, Holmes (then  engaged to Chris Klein ) told the teen magazine, "I used to think that I was going to marry Tom Cruise." 

Six months later, Klein and Holmes announced their breakup, and on April 27, 2005, Cruise and Holmes were first spotted together in Rome. TomKat made their red carpet debut as a couple two days later on April 29 at the David di Donatello Awards. Coincidence? We may never truly know.

"When I met Tom, I was completely in love, and, yes, I admired him growing up — he's Tom Cruise!" she reportedly told  T: The New York Times Style Magazine  ( via  People ).

May 23, 2005: Tom Cruise declares his love for Katie Holmes on The Oprah Winfrey Show

Cruise jolted daytime television when he appeared on  The Oprah Winfrey Show  and ecstatically jumped on her couch while professing love for his new girlfriend (who he subsequently brought out from backstage). The appearance went viral, with many questioning Cruise's sanity, as well as the relationship's authenticity.

June 16, 2005: Tom Cruise announces engagement to Katie Holmes

Shortly after going public with their relationship, Cruise announced at a press conference for  War of the Worlds  that he and Holmes were engaged. According to  The Hollywood Reporter , Cruise, then 43, proposed to Holmes, then 26, with a five-carat yellow diamond ring at a restaurant atop the Eiffel Tower.

"Today is a magnificent day for me; I'm engaged to a magnificent woman," he said, per  People . 

April 18, 2006: Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes welcome their first child together

Holmes gave birth to a baby girl, Suri, in Santa Monica, California, in April 2006. Their newborn daughter made her public debut on the October 2006 cover of  Vanity Fair. 

The  Dawson's Creek  alum  told the magazine , " The moment the doctor handed me Suri, I was just ready. The feeling is indescribable. All I can say is the moment I looked in her eyes, I felt like ... Mom." 

Since then, the celeb offspring and fashionista has inspired one of our favorite pop culture artifacts of all time:  Suri's Burn Book . 

November 18, 2006: Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes get married

In November 2006, the  Batman Begins  actress's schoolgirl fantasy of marrying Cruise came true. Their wedding was marked by an extravagant ceremony and reception at an Italian castle that cost more than $3 million, according to E! Online .

The star-studded guest list included couples  Jennifer Lopez  and Marc Anthony, John Travolta and the late Kelly Preston, and  David Beckham  and  Victoria Beckham , among others. As for the bridal party, Holmes had her sister Nancy Blaylock as maid of honor, while Cruise chose Scientology leader David Miscavige as his best man.

June 2012: Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes divorce

Interestingly, after Cruise gave a  Playboy  interview in which he praised Holmes, she filed for divorce. Although the  Top Gun  star admitted that he "didn't expect" the divorce —  per CBS News  — the legal proceedings ran smoothly, and a settlement was reached in just 11 days.

Cruise and Holmes have rarely spoken on the record in regard to their split, but it's rumored that Holmes's motivation was to free her daughter from the unique constraints of Scientology. During his deposition against Bauer Media Cruise (whose tabloids claimed he'd abandoned Suri), Cruise was asked if Holmes left him "in part to protect Suri from Scientology." 

Insulted, he said, "There is no need to protect my daughter from my religion." 

However,  according to ABC News , when prodded again, specifically as to whether Holmes had mentioned that she was leaving in an effort to protect Suri from Scientology, Cruise responded, "Did she say that? That was one of the assertions, yes."

Holmes was granted primary custody of Suri in their divorce. Though Cruise was afforded ample visitation, it was widely reported that he rarely saw his daughter. In 2016,  InTouch Weekly  asserted  that the actor hadn't seen or spoken to his youngest child in over 1,000 days (or two-and-a-half years).

From a childhood crush to hyperspeed courtship, parenthood and a storybook wedding, Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes ‘ Hollywood romance seemed to defy all odds. But the fairytale ended today, with news that Holmes has filed for divorce from Cruise, short of their sixth anniversary. Here now is a chronology of major events in their high-profile, and ultimately doomed, relationship.

1980s According to later interviews, as a young girl growing up in Toledo, Ohio, Holmes always had a crush on Tom, her movie star idol.

October 2004 A year after she’d left her defining role as Joey Potter on Dawson’s Creek , Holmes gives an interview to Seventeen magazine, in which she says, “I think every little girl dreams about (her wedding). I used to think I was going to marry Tom Cruise.”

April 2005 Katie meets Tom for the first time, ostensibly regarding a role in Mission: Impossible 3 .

STORY: Tom Cruise, Katie Holmes Divorcing 

April 27, 2005 The couple makes their new love public by appearing together in Rome, where Cruise had traveled to receive a David di Donatello Award for lifetime achievement. Both had major films ( War of the Worlds and Batman Begins ) coming out around the time, leading many to speculate the romance was a publicity stunt.

May 23, 2005 Cruise appears on The Oprah Winfrey Show and declares his love for Holmes, prompting him to punch the floor, grab Winfrey’s hands and, most memorably, jump on her couch with joy. He also pulls Holmes out from backstage. The appearance instantly becomes infamous, known as Cruise’s “couch jumping” episode.

June 13, 2005 Holmes converts from Catholicism to the Church of Scientology.

June 16, 2005 The couple announce their engagement, just shy of eight weeks from having first met. Cruise proposed to Holmes in Paris at the Eiffel Tower at a restaurant on the Tower’s second floor. He does not get on one knee, but he presents her with a ring reportedly containing a five-carat yellow diamond. She says yes. No date is announced.

June 24, 2005 Cruise and Matt Lauer face off for a heated argument on The Today Show over comments Cruise made criticizing Brooke Shields for using the anti-depressant drug Paxil to battle postpartum depression. Cruise calls Lauer “glib” in his defense of psychiatry as a real branch of medicine.

October 6, 2005 The couple, dubbed TomKat by the media, announce they are expecting a child.

December 1, 2005 Cruise purchases a sonogram machine to track his baby’s development, eliciting a warning from The Food and Drug Administration saying private use of a sonogram violates the law.

April 18, 2006 At Saint John’s Health Center in Santa Monica, Calif., Holmes gives birth to a baby girl weighing 7 pounds, 7 ounces. They name her Suri . A statement from the couple on the significance of the name says Suri “is a word with origins in both Hebrew and Persian. In Hebrew, it means ‘princess’ and in Persian, ‘red rose.’”

November 18, 2006 At a lavish affair at the 15th-century Odescalchi Castle in Bracciano, Italy, the couple wed. Holmes wore a Giorgio Armani gown featuring an ivory skil train adorned with lace and Swarovski beaded crystals. Cruise wore a navy-blue tuxedo, also by Armani. Celebrities in attendance include Will and Jada Pinkett Smith , Jim Carrey , Jenna Elfman , Victoria and David Beckham , Jennifer Lopez and then-husband Marc Anthony , Jerry Bruckheimer and JJ Abrams .

August 22, 2006 Viacom chairman Sumner Redstone announces that Paramount Pictures is ending its 14-year relationship with Cruise, citing the damage done by his various public controversies to his box office viability.

January 15, 2008 An internal Scientology video featuring Cruise discussing what the Church means to him is leaked onto Gawker.com, and instantly goes viral. The video inspires scores of parodies.

August 14, 2008 Tropic Thunder opens, in which Cruise wears heavy makeup and a fat suit to play Les Grossman, an obnoxious, hip-hop-loving studio executive. His performance earns positive reviews, and is seen as a step towards improving Cruise’s public image.

September 21, 2009 Suri is photographed by paparazzi wearing high heels.

June 15, 2012 Cruise plays against type again, starring as Stacee Jaxx, a hair-metal rock star in New Line’s Rock of Ages . The film underperforms, taking in $14.4 million at the box office in its opening weekend, giving it a third-place finish. Still, Cruise receives positive notices for his portrayal.

June 29, 2012 Holmes files for divorce from Cruise, making it the third divorce for him and her first. In a statement to the media, Cruise’s attorney calls it “a private matter” and that her primary concern is “her daughter’s best interest.” Cruise’s rep offers that the actor is “deeply saddened” about the news and is “concentrating on his three children.”

During this time, Katie Holmes was engaged to actor Chris Klein. 

March 2005: Holmes and Klein split.

According to People, Holmes and her then-fiancé Chris Klein ended their five-year relationship in 2005. 

April 2005: Holmes and Cruise stepped out as a couple for the first time.

A month after Holmes and Klein split, Holmes and Cruise make their first public appearance as a couple.

The two were photographed together in Rome where Cruise was receiving a David di Donatello Award for lifetime achievement. A source told People the pair had "been dating a couple of weeks." 

May 23, 2005: Cruise declared his love for Holmes during an appearance on "The Oprah Winfrey Show."

About a month after the two started dating, Cruise filmed one of his most well-known interviews ever. While on "Oprah,"  he jumped on the set's couch  to gush about Holmes.

Cruise said, "I'm in love. I'm in love and it's one of those things where you want to be cool, like, ‘Yeah I like her' … that's not how I feel." He added, "I wanted to meet this person and I met her and she's extraordinary."

June 13, 2005: Holmes said she's converting to Scientology.

At the "Batman Begins" premiere, Holmes told reporters that she was going to convert to Scientology .

In a separate interview with "W," she spoke a bit  about the process , saying, "You know, it's really exciting. I just started auditing and I'm taking some courses and I really like it. I feel like it's really helping."

A few months after they began dating, the two got engaged . Cruise said he proposed with a teardrop-shaped ring at the Eiffel Tower in Paris. He announced their engagement the next day at a press conference for "War of the Worlds."

At the conference, a fairly quiet Holmes said the two planned to have children. 

October 6, 2005: The couple announced they were expecting.

A spokesperson for Cruise told People that Holmes was pregnant with the couple's first child together and the couple was "very excited."

April 18, 2006: Holmes gave birth to a baby girl.

Cruise's spokesperson announced that Holmes had given birth to a baby girl named Suri who was seven pounds and 20 inches long.

October 2006: Suri made her public debut.

Cruise and Holmes showed Suri off to the world on the cover of Vanity Fair magazine. The couple also shared details about their daughter's name. 

"We had the name before we found out [the gender of the baby] because we both thought the baby would be a girl," Cruise told Vanity Fair. He  said their daughter's name meant "red rose."

November 18, 2006: The couple got married in Italy.

Holmes and Cruise sealed the deal with a very lavish wedding in the 15th-century Odescalchi Castle in Bracciano, Italy. Holmes wore a Giorgio Armani gown and the two had a "double ring" Scientology wedding , as per People's report. 

January 2008: Cruise's Scientology indoctrination video went viral.

According to Gawker, a  Scientology indoctrination video featuring Cruise had leaked and spread across media outlets. The outlet described the video as "scary." 

He said, among other things, "When you're a Scientologist, and you drive by an accident, you know you have to do something about it, because you know you're the only one who can really help … We are the way to happiness. We can bring peace and unite cultures."

May 2010: Holmes put on a show for Cruise at a Hollywood benefit.

During the benefit, Holmes performed a seductive dance to the song "Whatever Lola Wants" from the musical "Damn Yankees." She danced around her husband while he did some of his own moves.

September 2010: Holmes gushed about Cruise in an interview and talked about future children.

In an interview with Marie Claire, Holmes described being married to Cruise as "really fun," saying, "It's an amazing life, but we always remind ourselves of how incredibly lucky we are."

When asked about the possibility of having more kids, she said "maybe in a couple of years," adding that she really just wanted to focus on Suri at the moment.

May 2012: Cruise raved about Holmes in an interview with Playboy.

In a "Playboy" interview, Cruise called Holmes "an extraordinary person," saying "if you spent five minutes with her, you'd see it." He added, "I'm just happy, and I have been since the moment I met her. What we have is very special."

June 2012: Cruise promoted "Rock of Ages" without Holmes by his side.

Many noticed when Holmes didn't appear next to her husband on the red carpet while he promoted his new film.

June 29, 2012: Holmes filed for divorce from Cruise.

In June, Holmes' team made a statement to People about how she was divorcing Cruise , who said he wasn't expecting it at all.

Holmes' attorney said, "This is a personal and private matter for Katie and her family. Katie's primary concern remains, as it always has been, her daughter's best interest."

Cruise's rep said, "Kate has filed for divorce and Tom is deeply saddened and is concentrating on his three children. Please allow them their privacy."

Holmes reportedly made calls about the divorce on a disposable cellphone and hired three law firms in three states, according to the Los Angeles Times. 

July 11, 2012: Lawyers for Cruise and Holmes announced they had reached a settlement on custody of Suri.

According to People, lawyers reached a very quick settlement only 11 days after the divorce was filed.  Holmes received primary custody of 6-year-old Suri and Cruise was granted visitation rights.

April 2013: Cruise admitted he had never expected the divorce.

During an interview with German TV network ProSieben, Cruise said he didn't expect Holmes to divorce him .

He described that time of his life as a "tragicomedy," and said, "To be 50 and to have experiences and to think you have a grip on everything ... and then it hits you: This is it, what life can do to you."

Katie Holmes, Tom Cruise Wed in Italian Castle

BRACCIANO, Italy – Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes exchanged vows Saturday in a lavish, star-studded wedding celebrated in a fairy-tale setting: a glowing 15th-century castle in this medieval lakeside town.

Richard Gere , Jennifer Lopez and Jim Carrey were among the more than 150 relatives and friends at the union of "TomKat," whose relationship has created a media firestorm since the superstar couple announced it little more than a year and a half ago.

Giorgio Armani , who designed the clothes of the entire wedding party, was there too, as was Brooke Shields, who has patched up a very public rift created when Cruise criticized her for using prescription drugs to treat postpartum depression.

Oil-fed torches and tiny candles flickered from the battlements and windows of the Odescalchi castle as the couple and guests gathered for the evening wedding in the town about 27 miles northwest of Rome. The ceremony was performed by a Scientology minister, the couple's publicists said.

The couple's baby, Suri, came dressed in white and in her mother's arms, seven months after her birth created a sensation of its own.

The wedding party included Cruise's two children, Isabella and Connor, from his previous marriage to Nicole Kidman, the publicists said in a statement. The best man was Cruise's best friend David Miscavige and the matron of honor was Holmes' sister Nancy Blaylock.

Holmes wore a black dress and boots before she changed into an off-the-shoulder ivory silk gown designed by Giorgio Armani for the ceremony. Her father, Martin Holmes, walked her down the aisle and she carried a bouquet of flowers made by Armani including calla lilies.

Cruise, who sported dark shades and waved to fans as he rode through the castle gates in a van, wore a single breasted navy blue Armani handmade suit, with an ivory silk French collar shirt of the same fabric as the bride's gown for the wedding.

Armani told The Associated Press that Cruise, then Holmes, walked down a stone ramp lined with flag bearers in medieval costumes and to the roll of drums.

They exchanged vows in a former stable decorated simply with white flowers.

"For the Americans, this was very special because Americans do not have this kind of thing back home, and they dream of such things in our beautiful country, and you can see the surprise and the awe on their faces," Armani said.

He added that the 20-minute ceremony ended with "a never-ending kiss" that prompted some of the guests to shout "stop, stop!"

Italian singer Andrea Bocelli serenaded the couple at the reception and the bride and groom cut a five-tiered white chocolate wedding cake. Fireworks later burst above the castle, but the view was marred by a foggy night.

Cruise-Holmes Wedding May Have Some Strange Vows

Other famous guests included soccer star David Beckham's pop star wife Victoria, formerly known as Posh Spice of the Spice Girls.

Cruise and Holmes arrived separately to the castle earlier Saturday, with pouring rain forcing Holmes and her daughter to take shelter under large, green umbrellas as they left their limousine. The sun was shining on the castle when Cruise arrived in a van from Rome, where the family had been staying in a luxury hotel near the Spanish Steps, with some fans shouting, "Tom, Tom!"

When the groom drove up, Holmes watched from a castle window and anxiously gestured with her hand. Holmes was giving Cruise a Vacheron Constantin watch engraved simply, "I Love You," as a wedding gift, the company said. It said she bought the gift in Los Angeles last week.

As the sun began to set, candles were placed in pots along the road to the castle and in some of the windows. Men wearing tuxedos and women holding up the hems of their long gowns walked up the steep path to the castle.

Security was tight, with Carbinieri paramilitary police patrolling the walls of the castle and all vehicles banned from the center of Bracciano.

The flag of the Odescalchi family, whose ancestors include Benedetto Odescalchi, the 17th century pope Innocent XI, fluttered over the castle's towers.

"When I first walked here, I didn't know why they chose this place," said Emily Roeder, 19, of Atchison, Kan., who came to Bracciano for the day from Florence, where she is studying. "Then I saw the castle and the streets all around, and it's really romantic."

Hundreds of the town's 14,000 residents and fans of the stars braved intermittent rain to catch a glimpse of the arrivals.

"I want to see at least one of them — even if it's not Tom Cruise," said 15-year-old Erica Bandiera.

"I want to see Beckham's wife," said her friend Luca Costanzi, 15, with a huge grin.

Holmes and Cruise became engaged in June 2005, about two months after they went public with their relationship, kissing and posing for photographers in Rome. Their daughter was born April 18.

Much of the attention given to Cruise since he jumped up and down on Oprah Winfrey's couch proclaiming his love for Holmes has been negative. He was mocked for that episode, criticized for his comments about Shields and questioned about his embrace of Scientology, the religion founded by science-fiction writer L. Ron Hubbard that holds an opposition to psychiatry and related medication among its tenets.

In August, Paramount Studios severed its 14-year deal with Cruise's film production company; Sumner Redstone, whose company owns Paramount Pictures, said "his recent conduct has not been acceptable to Paramount." Earlier this month it was announced that Cruise and his producing partner, Paula Wagner, are taking over the Hollywood movie studio United Artists.

Scientology ceremonies contain many elements of traditional weddings, including rings and vows. But they also include certain Scientology fundamentals, including vowing never to go to bed without communicating about any differences.

A spokesman for the Church of Scientology for Rome, Fabrizio D'Agostino, said an exchange of vows with a Scientology rite was not legally recognized in Italy, and would have to be preceded or followed by a civil union.

The publicists said Cruise and Holmes had "officialized their marriage in Los Angeles prior to their departure for Italy," saying that was customary for couples marrying outside the United States. Cruise's publicist Arnold Robinson did not immediately reply to an e-mailed question about whether that meant they had been married in a civil ceremony.

Cruise, star of the "Mission: Impossible" series and "War of the Worlds," was divorced from Kidman in 2001, was previously married to Mimi Rogers and had a high-profile romance with Penelope Cruz. Holmes, who starred in TV's "Dawson's Creek," and last year in "Batman Begins," had been engaged to Chris Klein.

The ‘dawson’s creek’ star is still an enigma: after a promising start that included working with hollywood’s most renowned directors, the most talked-about marriage of its time altered her plans.

If someone awoke now from a coma they went into in the early 2000s, they would expect Dawson’s Creek (1998-2003) stars James Van de Beek and Katie Holmes (who turns 45 this Monday) to be actors with successful, established careers. But it was Joshua Jackson who turned into a TV star with a few outstanding series under his belt like Fringe , The Affair and Mr. Death , and Michelle Williams is the one who became one of her generation’s best actresses, thanks to her roles in Brokeback Mountain (2005), My Week with Marilyn (2011) and The Fabelmans (2022). Meanwhile, James Van Der Beek’s great legacy is a crying meme and Katie Holmes reigns in fashion magazines but is ignored by film magazines. Hardly anyone could name three of her movies from the last decade, but fashionistas could mention a look of hers that they admire.

Pictures of her went viral the day she hailed a cab wearing a jacket that revealed her cashmere bra underneath. The Khaité bra, which cost $545.42 (€500), sold out in an hour; shortly thereafter, an inexpensive version was available at Zara. The reason for Holmes’s change in status from actress to fashion icon is surprising: Tom Cruise. Her relationship with the megastar —the couple was nicknamed TomKat— was so controversial that Vanity Fair magazine claimed that the pairing was the result of a Scientology casting process .

Whether that is true or not, the relationship clearly did change the public’s perception of them both and irrevocably degraded Holmes’s career. Before her marriage, she had worked with directors such as Ang Lee, Curtis Hanson and Christopher Nolan. After the divorce, she has not appeared in any memorable projects.

“What we had stumbled upon”

Holmes was born in Toledo, Ohio, in 1978; she is the youngest of five children and has four brothers. She graduated from Notre Dame Academy and had been admitted to Columbia University, but her real vocation was acting. She sent an audition tape to the casting call for Ang Lee’s The Ice Storm (1997) and got the part. She made her debut on screen in a big way, opposite Kevin Kline and Sigourney Weaver. “I thought things were going to be really fun. My first day in L.A. was January 21, 1996. My mom and I were driving on Santa Monica Boulevard and saw a big sign that said ‘Golden Globes.’ So we went and sat on the bleachers in the rain to watch movie stars arrive. We couldn’t believe what we had stumbled upon.”

Back then, she probably couldn’t imagine how often she herself would walk that same red carpet. But the phone didn’t ring again as quickly as she had hoped, and she came to believe that her career was over. As she told The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon , “I thought, ‘Oh, well, that might be it.’’ You know, ‘That might be all there is.’ But it was okay, ‘cause I was like, ‘You know what, that’s okay. Like, that was an amazing experience.’ And I can, like, tell my grandkids and I’ll be fine.” But the success wasn’t going to fade so quickly. Another of her auditions had captivated Kevin Williamson, who spearheaded the 1990s slasher movie revival as the writer of Scream (1996). At the time, Williamson was looking for stars for Dawson’s Creek .

“My first encounter with Katie Holmes was when I was watching a videotape her mother sent us,” Williamson stated. “The tape showed Katie in her basement in Ohio, auditioning for the role of Joey in Dawson’s Creek in which her mother played Dawson. After watching it, everyone in the room was speechless.” Williamson is effusive in his praise of the actress: “To meet her is to fall instantly under her spell. She is a rare gem: hypnotic, intelligent, funny, sweet, shy, boisterous, elusive, talented, beautiful, soulful, elegant, sophisticated, innocent, naïve, comical, feminine, childlike, loving, kind, reliable, caring, protective, generous...”

Holmes was soon gracing the covers of magazines like Seventeen and Rolling Stone . Dawson’s Creek became a small phenomenon that captured a generation of viewers eager for a more adult teen fiction than usual. Let’s not forget that it was the first to show a homosexual kiss, a historical milestone in American television, and the series approached topics like addiction and death less prudishly than usual. At the center of the phenomenon was Joey Potter (played by Holmes), the apex of a love triangle, but not a sexualized character. She was serious, focused, a good student, a good friend —in short, a far cry from life’s Brenda Walshes and Kelly Kapowskis.

“I didn’t want to be the sexy young thing. I am not sexy. I used to have a friend of mine come to all my photo shoots to make sure that they didn’t try to make me that way,” she told Glamour . At the time Holmes was in a relationship with costar Joshua Jackson. Hollywood was experiencing the umpteenth boom of cinema by and for teenagers at the time, and the industry was eager to get its hands on the show’s four leading ladies. Holmes took advantage of the moment and cleverly combined independent films like Doug Liman’s Go with her discoverer Kevin Williamson’s horror movie Teaching Mrs. Tingle , and high-aspiration films, such as the dazzling Wonder Boys where he shared the cast with Michael Douglas, Frances McDormand, Robert Downey Jr. and Tobey Maguire. After Dawson’s Creek ended in 2003, Holmes began her new life with a blockbuster, Batman Begins , in which she played a role created specifically by Christopher Nolan for the film: Rachel Dawes, Bruce Wayne’s first love. The stage seemed set for Katie Holmes to become one of the great stars of the 21st century.

And then Tom showed up.

How to destroy your public image

In early 2005 Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise began a whirlwind romance. According to Vanity Fair , the relationship was orchestrated by the Church of Scientology, to which Cruise belongs, at all times. After the “failures” of his relationships with Nicole Kidman and Penelope Cruz, they were looking for a more “malleable” profile, the magazine reported. There was a clue was given in a 2004 Seventeen magazine article in which Holmes (then engaged to actor Chris Klein, star of American Pie, whom she dated for three years) stated that, as a teenager, she believed she would end up marrying Tom Cruise.

Six months later, Klein and Holmes announced their breakup and Cruise and Holmes were spotted together for the first time in Rome. The TomKat phenomenon was born, much to the media’s delight. " “When I met Tom I was completely in love and, yes, I admired him growing up – he’s Tom Cruise!” she told The New York Times . A few weeks after the couple’s first photo together went public, Tom Cruise appeared on Oprah Winfrey’s show. Who doesn’t remember that? The interview that became an example of how to trash your public image. Moments like Tom Cruise getting down on his knees, grabbing the host’s hands and jumping on the couch became popular and led people to believe that he had lost his mind (including Oprah herself, who exclaimed that outright).

Nearly 20 years later, perhaps most reprehensible and memorable was the way he dragged his future wife onto the set as if she lacked her own identity: Cruise left the set, went to the dressing room and ushered her in. Whether she was prepared or not, she looked really uncomfortable, and the situation seemed embarrassing.

Few people talked about The War of the Worlds , the film Cruise was promoting at the time (which was equally successful based on its own merits and the name of its director, Steven Spielberg), and Paramount ended up walking away from what was then its golden goose.

In love with publicity

But nothing could stop that tsunami of love. Cruise proposed to Holmes with a five-carat yellow diamond ring at a restaurant atop the Eiffel Tower. It was all so giddy and over-the-top that the usually not-at-all catty People magazine conducted a poll, asking its readers whether the romance was real or a publicity stunt (62 percent voted it was a stunt). Tina Brown wrote a Washington Post an article titled “It’s Only Publicity Love” and the Boston Globe declared, “Sure They’re in Love—with Publicity.”

Their wedding was a series of excesses. It was held at the Odescalchi castle 35 kilometers (about 22 miles) north of Rome amid ringbearers, flower girls and torchlights; the guest list included Will Smith, Jim Carrey, Jennifer Lopez, John Travolta and David Beckham and Victoria Beckham. That fairytale wedding marked the beginning of the decline of both actors’ careers. It was almost definitive in Holmes’s case. In the Cruise’s case, it began a period of wandering in the desert from which he struggled to recover. If their wedding caused a stir, the birth of their daughter Suri attracted even more interest. We saw their daughter for the first time on the October 2006 cover of Vanity Fair . It was the magazine’s second best-selling issue (the first featured Jennifer Aniston’s confessions following her divorce from Brad Pitt).

Mrs. Cruise’s career

Katie Holmes’ appearances were limited to smiling after her husband and her films were increasingly irrelevant. In an incomprehensible decision, she gave up her role in a new Batman installment and the part went to Maggie Gyllenhaal. According to Holmes, she preferred to star in the comedy Mad Money (2008); according to Hollywood rumors, Cruise did not want her to act in the most important film of the year while he did not.

Holmes starred in more and more inconsequential films, and her most famous appearances were no longer on the red carpet, but in the front row at fashion shows. Those who believed that the couple had no future together had to wait six years to be proven right: in June 2012, the pair divorced. Like their wedding and their parenthood, rumors surrounded their split. People said that a clause in the divorce settlement established that she could no longer be seen in public with another man for five years and could not talk about her marriage or Scientology; otherwise, she would lose €5 million ($5,454,250). “She is allowed to go out with people, but not in public places or in view of the media, and she should not allow any boyfriend to be near her daughter Suri,” the leaks claimed.

That ceased to be considered a rumor when an open secret was confirmed: her relationship at the time with actor Jamie Foxx. After the divorce, no images of Cruise with his daughter have surfaced, although the teenager is one of the most photographed celebrity daughters and the actor is one of the media’s most scrutinized men.

Holmes did not try to resurrect her career, like so many stars who take their foot off the gas to start a family. Her most recent films have not sparked any interest. Only her role as Jackie Kennedy in The Kennedys and her appearance as a “slutty pumpkin” in How I Met Your Mother merited media attention.

In the past year, Holmes has been more focused on Broadway, directing very personal projects and raising Suri. The dazzling teenager from Ohio is now the mother of a teenager with whom she lies on the couch to watch Dawson’s Creek ; as she has stated on more than one occasion, that is her life’s most important work. Now, she alone runs that life.

The aftermath

The TomKat wedding was back in the news this year amid Remini’s lawsuit against Scientology.

The King of Queens actress, who left the organization in 2013 and has become a vocal critic, claimed she had been “stalked, surveilled, harassed, threatened, intimidated” since she left. Within the lawsuit were multiple mentions of Cruise, because she claimed her life as a Scientologist changed after his “wedding of the century.” The church has called her lawsuit “ludicrous” and “frivolous.”

Among Remini’s claims was that she asked where best man Miscavige’s wife, Shelly , was and it caused drama. She also claimed she witnessed other behavior at the wedding “that set off red flags,” including unethical contacts between various Scientology executives and others at the wedding, and when she spoke up about it, she was admonished. As a result, she claimed she was held at a Scientology facility for four months after the wedding. She also claimed she had to make amends to the newlyweds by donating money to name a seat in a theater after Suri.

Remini previously claimed, in 2015, that her invitation to the wedding came with a request to get her high-profile friends to attend , including her BFF Lopez and Lopez’s then-husband Marc Anthony. She said the church wanted to recruit them. (Lopez has denied being a Scientologist but said her father is .) She also claimed baby Suri was at one point crying on a bathroom floor and that nobody picked her up. Remini said at the time that Holmes accused her of “disrupting the party” and submitted a report to the church about her.

While the church has denied Remini’s claims, Holmes said at the time, “I regret having upset Leah in the past and wish her only the best in the future.”

Here is where Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes got married

I had been told that Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes got married here - The Odescalchi Castle. Since we arrived Bracciano, I had been soooo looking forward to visiting the castle. Fee is required for the entrance and guide tour. The guide tour was conducted in Italian (though the group we joined was more English speaking people than Italian...). Inside the castle, they do have some signboards on the wall, to give brief introduction about the function of each room in English. Even though you may not be able to understand what the guide tour said, just read from the board yourself okay =) The garden area outside the castle and the open area in the castle are allowed to take photos, apart from that, it is forbidden to take photos inside the castle. Overall, I enjoyed the visit to the castle. You know, the 'Castle' thing is like a dream to every girl. This is the only and famous one in Bracciano, it is unique and got its own history. I don't consider it is a waste or boring to visit it. It definitely made my day =) Cheers D

The only way to visit the castle is through a guided tour. We were fortunate that the tour, which was originally supposed to be in Italian, was given in English. You get to see only part of the castle as the owners occupy the other wing. Photos only allowed on the exterior of the castle. You do get to pop in and out of the castle. Beautiful views of the lake. We were also fortunate that there was an exhibition of typical period clothing throughout the years as this enhanced the tour. Tour guide gave us ample information about the castle and its past residents. Castle is most famous for the celebrity wedding of Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes, but this is downplayed in the tour & only comes up if asked. If you're in Bracciano, it's a definite must.

We took a train from Rome to Bracciano and had lunch looking over the volcanic lake watching the families playing in the water. We walked down from the town and when asking about getting a taxi to take us back up the hill , a gentleman offered his assistance and drove us to the top. I love Italians they are always so helpful and gracious. The castle tour was in English because of the time of the year, and we found it engaging. There was a display of dresses that seemed overshadowed by the stories about the castle and the family that owned it. The view from the top over the country side and the lake made us feel like kings and queens. This is the same castle where the fairy tale wedding of Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes took place and the guide shared some of the details of the wedding since she took part in the preparations. An enjoyable day and a pleasant reprise from the hustle and bustle of Rome.

The guided tour lasts an hour and is informative.There was an exhibitoion of dresses from various ages which added to the rather sparse rooms which felt cold compared to a U.K country pile.Fabulous views over the lake

Strong points: the position, the view on the lake, the idea of strength and power, the architecture. The weak point: the objects and the pieces of furniture left; are not too many and not at the top, maybe the fee family Orsini had to give to family Odescalchi was very high!

I refuse to review this under all the incorrect headings as this is the actual name of the sight. A great first time view of the lake and surrounding beautiful Lazio countryside just one hour north of Rome. We stopped on enroute back from Tarquinia and made the 6pm tour. The tours are in Italian except in high summer or advance reservation. To me that's the charm and a great way to learn. It's not hard to understand what is being told during the one hour guided tour. (unless you were the two rude German and English families with our group whose kids were so badly misbehaved). No mention of Tom Cruise thankfully bit this is the place he helped make famous after the pope leftbehind several centuries ago. Great place, lovely (patient) guide.

Tom, Katie wed in Italian castle

In a fairy-tale setting, Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes exchanged wedding vows Saturday in a glowing 15 th -century castle in this medieval lakeside town.

The evening ceremony was performed by a Scientology minister in front of more than 150 relatives and friends, the couple’s publicists confirm to Access Hollywood .

Oil-fed torches and tiny candles flickered from the battlements and windows of the Odescalchi castle as the couple and fellow celebrities gathered for the ceremony in the town about 27 miles northwest of Rome.

One of the guests was the couple’s daughter, 7-month-old Suri, who was dressed in white and arrived in her mother’s arms.

The wedding party included Cruise’s two children, Isabella and Connor, from his previous marriage to Nicole Kidman, the publicists said in a statement. The best man was Cruise’s best friend David Miscavige and the matron of honor was Holmes’ sister Nancy Blaylock.

Holmes wore a black dress and boots before she changed into an off-the-shoulder ivory silk gown designed by Giorgio Armani for the ceremony. Her father, Martin Holmes, walked her down the aisle and she carried a bouquet of flowers made by Armani including calla lilies.

Cruise, who sported dark shades and waved to fans as he rode through the castle gates in a van, wore a single breasted navy blue Armani handmade suit, with an ivory silk French collar shirt of the same fabric as the bride’s gown for the wedding.

‘Never-ending kiss’ Armani, who was among the guests, told The Associated Press that Cruise, then Holmes, walked down a stone ramp lined with flag bearers in medieval costumes and to the roll of drums.

They exchanged vows in a former stable decorated simply with white flowers.

“For the Americans this was very special, because Americans do not have this kind of thing back home, and they dream of such things in our beautiful country, and you can see the surprise and the awe on their faces,” Armani said.

He added that the 20-minute ceremony ended with “a never-ending kiss” that prompted some of the guests to shout “stop, stop!”

Italian singer Andrea Bocelli serenaded the couple at the reception and the bride and groom cut a five-tiered white chocolate wedding cake. Fireworks later burst above the castle, but the view was marred by a foggy night.Other famous guests included Brooke Shields, Jennifer Lopez, Jim Carrey, Victoria Beckham and Roberta Armani, the designer’s niece.

The two stars arrived separately to the castle earlier Saturday, with pouring rain forcing Holmes and her daughter to take shelter under large, green umbrellas as they left their limousine. The sun was shining on the castle when Cruise arrived in a van from Rome, where the family had been staying in a luxury hotel near the Spanish Steps, with some fans shouting, “Tom, Tom!”

When the groom drove up, Holmes watched from a castle window and anxiously gestured with her hand. Holmes was giving Cruise a Vacheron Constantin watch engraved simply, “I Love You,” as a wedding gift, the company said. It said she bought the gift in Los Angeles last week.

As the sun began to set, candles were placed in pots along the road to the castle and in some of the windows. Men wearing tuxedos and women holding up the hems of their long gowns walked up the steep path to the castle.

Security was tight, with Carbinieri paramilitary police patrolling the walls of the castle and all vehicles banned from the center of Bracciano.

The flag of the Odescalchi family, whose ancestors include Benedetto Odescalchi, the 17 th century pope Innocent XI, fluttered over the castle’s towers.

“When I first walked here, I didn’t know why they chose this place,” said Emily Roeder, 19, of Atchison, Kan., who came to Bracciano for the day from Florence, where she is studying. “Then I saw the castle and the streets all around, and it’s really romantic.”

Hundreds of the town’s 14,000 residents and fans of the stars braved intermittent rain to catch a glimpse of the arrivals.

“I want to see at least one of them—even if it’s not Tom Cruise,” said 15-year-old Erica Bandiera.

“I want to see Beckham’s wife,” said her friend Luca Costanzi, 15, with a huge grin.

Scientology ceremonies contain many elements of traditional weddings, including rings and vows. But they also include certain Scientology fundamentals, including vowing never to go to bed without communicating about any differences.

A spokesman for the Church of Scientology for Rome, Fabrizio D’Agostino, said an exchange of vows with a Scientology rite was not legally recognized in Italy, and would have to be preceded or followed by a civil union.

The publicists said Cruise and Holmes had “officialized their marriage in Los Angeles prior to their departure for Italy,” saying that was customary for couples marrying outside the United States. Cruise’s publicist Arnold Robinson did not immediately reply to an e-mailed question about whether that meant they had been married in a civil ceremony.

Holmes and Cruise became engaged in June 2005, about two months after they went public with their relationship, kissing and posing for photographers in Rome. Their daughter was born April 18.

Cruise, who was divorced from Kidman in 2001, also was previously married to Mimi Rogers and had a high-profile romance with Penelope Cruz. Holmes, who starred in TV’s “Dawson’s Creek,” had been engaged to Chris Klein.

Back in 2012, the former Hollywood power couple  Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes announced to the world they were getting a divorce after six years of marriage. According to Ranker , news of the A-list split sent shockwaves throughout the world of show business and sparked waves of rumors and speculation as to why the pair decided to call it quits. So, why exactly did Cruise and Holmes get divorced?

As Extra reported, the former husband and wife first began dating in 2005. Katie Holmes has remained quiet about her divorce from Tom Cruise

According to InStyle , both Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise have remained tight-lipped about the exact reasoning behind their divorce. However, the "Mission Impossible" actor previously revealed that he "didn't expect" his wife to file for divorce. Although neither party has confirmed why the highly publicized breakup actually took place, there are plenty of rumors surrounding Holmes' decision to get out of the marriage. One of the primary rumors was reported by HuffPost in 2013, when Cruise discussed Holmes' aversion to raising their daughter, Suri, in the Scientology religion.

While the "Top Gun" actor was being questioned during a deposition for a defamation case involving Bauer Media, a lawyer asked whether the "Dawson's Creek" alum had requested a divorce "in part to protect Suri from Scientology," (per HuffPost). The outlet went on to say that Cruise initially reacted with frustration, indicating, "there is no need to protect my daughter from my religion." However, as the attorney continued to press Cruise on the matter, the movie star admitted that Holmes' desire to keep Suri from Scientology, " ... was one of the assertions, yes."

Despite her newfound freedom as a single woman, Radar Online reported in 2016 that Holmes had made a "secret divorce deal" with Cruise that allegedly forbid her from publicly commenting on their separation or dating someone else for five years after their breakup. Though almost a decade has passed since their divorce, the "Batman Begins" actress has still remained quiet about the situation.

The most commonly accepted cause surrounding the demise of the couple's relationship is that Katie Holmes wanted to remove herself and their daughter Suri from any involvement with the Church of Scientology. Per InStyle , Tom Cruise appeared to back up this theory by admitting that one of the reasons his ex-wife filed for divorce came down to the controversial religion itself during his defamation case against Bauer media.

During the 2013 deposition, Cruise also revealed that his daughter Suri, who was just seven years old at the time, was no longer a practicing member of the Church of Scientology (via HuffPost ). This particular revelation came as a surprise to many, primarily because those who leave the Church are deemed a "Suppressive Person" and are eventually cut off from other practicing members — which includes immediate members of their own family. According to the Mirror , Cruise and Holmes' divorce settlement afforded Holmes "sole custody" of Suri, and reportedly included "'ironclad' rulings that Suri would not be exposed to anything Scientology related."

How Katie Holmes and Suri Cruise's relationship with Tom Cruise will change once she turns 18

I t's a big week in the Holmes household, as Katie Holmes' daughter with her ex-husband Tom Cruise , Suri , is poised to turn 18 years old on April 18 , finally entering adulthood.

The actress, 45, and her teen daughter lead their lives away from the spotlight, while Tom, 61, has reportedly been estranged from his youngest for over a decade.

After their divorce in 2012, Katie was granted full custody of Suri, and Tom agreed as part of their settlement to pay $400,000 per year in child support to his ex-wife for Suri's upbringing.

However, that agreement lasts until Suri turns 18, and is set to expire this week, after 12 years of payments, which roughly equate to $33k a month in child support (Katie did not ask for spousal support in their divorce).

While it is reported that Tom might still pay for Suri's insurance bills, plus contribute to her college tuition (as one of the highest paid actors in the world), it seems like the end of his child support might just extinguish one of his last remaining links to his daughter.

For her day out, Suri opted for a stylish ensemble, featuring a billowing tan sweater cinched at the waist with a leather belt, paired perfectly with a flowing white skirt. 

Her outfit was completed with a pair of well-worn cowboy boots, adding a touch of rugged charm to her sophisticated look.

As she navigated the sidewalks, Suri snacked on a bag of chips and sipped from a green water bottle, her long brunette locks styled with a center part, cascading beautifully down her back.

This sighting comes shortly after her significant birthday, a celebration in which her estranged father, Tom was notably absent. 

The Hollywood star has been busy in London, engrossed in the filming of his eighth Mission Impossible movie and recently attending Victoria Beckham’s 50th birthday celebration.

Tom’s involvement in the glittering social scene, including his time with the Beckhams, starkly contrasts with his absence from Suri’s life. 

The pair have been estranged since 2013, a year following his highly publicized divorce from Katie. 

The end of Suri’s 18th year also marked the conclusion of Tom's child support obligations, which were reported to be around $400,000 a year as stipulated in their divorce settlement.

The last public sighting of Tom and Suri together was during a trip to Disneyland in 2012, the same year his marriage to Katie ended.

Looking to the future, Suri is rumored to be eyeing a career in fashion, with plans to study the subject in New York starting this September. 

Family lawyer Theresa Wright commented on the situation, explaining the nuances of child support obligations that might extend due to educational pursuits. 

"If Suri is enrolling in Art college, Tom would still be responsible for paying child maintenance to Katie until Suri reaches the age of 20, provided she stays in Art college full time. There may have been an agreement in Katie and Tom’s divorce settlement that maintenance is provided for longer, in which case it may be that Tom continues to pay child maintenance until either Suri finishes university or reaches the age of 25," she told HELLO!

Meanwhile, Tom remains committed to his own career, continuing to film the latest Mission Impossible sequel in the UK. The project, tentatively titled Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two , is expected to release on May 23, 2025. 

This follows the release of Dead Reckoning Part One last July. The production of MI:8 has faced several setbacks, including delays due to the Hollywood writers' strike and the need to pause filming to promote the previous installment.

Filming locations for the eighth installment have included various iconic sites across Derbyshire, Surrey, and central London, such as the Natural History Museum in Kensington and Westminster Bridge.
