How to get from Manila to Cebu (Flight / Ferry)

The Manila – Cebu route is the most popular one in all of the Philippines. There are thousands of people traveling between these two cities every day, and that doesn’t only mean there are plenty of departure times you can choose from, but also very fair prices since the different companies compete for all the customers.

The most important thing right away:

There are 2 ways to get from Manila to Cebu (or vice versa) – by flight or by ferry.

I already have done both of them, and in this quick guide I will give you an overview of both travel options, information on the prices and duration, links to the companies, tips on what to look out for, my own pictures and a video, as well as an overview map.

Manila to Cebu by Flight

Manila to Cebu

Cebu Pacific Air is the most popular choice among most travelers. It’s the low cost carrier of the Philippines that almost always has the cheapest rates – I just checked the price for a one way ticket for next Wednesday, it’s just 1,530 Pesos including all taxes and fees. They currently have 11 (!) daily departures on this most popular route of the country.

 • The flight time from Manila to Cebu is 1 hour and 15 minutes .

Another popular choice is Air Asia , which is also a low cost carrier with similar rates (though I found them to be a couple of hundred Pesos more expensive in 90% of the cases, so I’ve never flown with them so far in the Philippines).

And the third main carrier on the Manila to Cebu route is Philippine Airlines – the national airline of the Philippines. Unlike with the low cost carriers, you will get free drinks and food on board as well as more legroom, but the tickets are more expensive: It’s 2,375 Pesos for the cheapest departure time next Wednesday.

Note: Take your taxi to the airport about 3 hours before your departure time – no matter whether in Manila or Cebu, because the traffic can be horrible.

And if you should still arrive at the airport quite early, you will probably have something nice to look at.

Girl at Manila Airport

As always with flights here in the Philippines, the views out of the window over all these small and big islands are spectacular.

Here is Cebu from above, just 5 minutes before landing:

How to get from Cebu Airport to Downtown?

The airport in Cebu is located on a small island called Mactan, which is connected with a bridge to mainland Cebu. It’s about 14.5km from the airport to Mango Square in downtown Cebu.

I have decided to write a separate post on this topic:

Manila to Cebu by Ferry

Ferry from Manila to Cebu

Only few people decide to take the ferry from Manila to Cebu, and that’s the main reason for it:

 • The travel time from Manila to Cebu by ferry is 22 hours .

Yes, that’s right: It’s an overnight ferry, means you will have to sleep on the boat.

I can tell you that it can still be worth it and quite an experience, but only if you don’t plan other ferry trips in the Philippines, like from Cebu to Bohol or from Caticlan to Boracay .

You can check the departure times of the ferries and prebook your ticket (even though that’s not really necessary, except on national holidays when many boats are fully booked) on the website 2 Go Travel . Note how they call their vessels like “St Pope John Paul II” or “St Leo the Great”.

The price for a one way ferry ticket from Manila to Cebu City is about 1,000 Pesos for Tourist Class , 1,500 Pesos for Cabin for 4 and 3,800 Pesos for a Suiteroom for 2 .

Note: There are only 1-2 daily departures – check them on the website.

This is how the berths in the Tourist Class look like:

Manila Ferry Berths

One of the great things about taking the ferry in the Philippines, apart from getting a feel for how many islands there really are, are the nice surprises when you suddenly spot a whale or a dolphin:

Philippines Dolphin

And it’s amazing how crystal clear and clean the water is:

Philippines Ocean Water

Sunset from the boat:

The ferries leave from Pier 4 in Manila and arrive at  Pier 1 in Cebu City the following day. And if you want to travel from Cebu back to Manila, it’s the same locations, prices and schedules.

What was it like to sail with 2GO? How was the experience?

OK, first of all, full disclosure, our trip was arranged for us by 2GO Travel itself, but I’ll still be as objective as I can.

Personally, I’ve never experienced traveling on a ship prior this ship. A few people I know have never tried or even considered traveling this way because they were afraid of the thought of being in the open sea and feeling huge waves while on board. I myself isn’t scared of waves and I don’t get sea sick easily. But if you’re one of those people, I don’t think you should worry much about it. I didn’t really feel the vessel move for the most part. It felt like I was in a hotel on land.

What I was concerned about was the long travel time and the possibility of being bored with nothing to do on the ship. The journey from Manila to Cebu took us almost 24 hours, but surprisingly and thankfully, I didn’t get bored at any point. Activities and amenities on board would keep you occupied for much of the journey and it could make you feel like it’s already a part of your vacation.

So far pal express is much better than Cebu pacific in terms of customers service and in flight crew. And on time departure and arrival . Especially if you're taking airbus 320 plane . But the small aircraft like bombardier . It usually delayed .

We did booked shorter layovers but flights changed and layovers are too long good thing Philippine Airlines give us a hotel in manila but here Vancouver to Calgary too long layovers and there is enough sets to wait closer to air canada and they will open 4am.we were here 1 am .our flights schedule for air canada 8:10am.we paid expensive flights but not happy of lay over Vancouver to Calgary.

Biz class is way below what other airlines offer. The food was mediocre at best. A WiFi was intermittent and movies were dated. Honestly the best part of the trip was that the Mabuhay lounge in SFO was closed and they gave us pass to Air France lounge. My advise, fill up there before boarding plane.

Not a pleasant experience from the start of booking first flight all the way through to the actually flight. Only saving grace is the food.

No power on an 11 hour flight? What a joke. Crew did not come by enough to get trash or offer water.

Checking in was okay but boarding a little bit slow

There is a problem with the sound while watching movie or listening to the music ( the sound is static & goes on and off). Aside from the sound, the experience was good & stewardesses are nice.

Not leave 12 hours late. This airline is horrible always late does not refund upgrades for cancelled flights inept counter staff.. needs to be shutdown

The food was good but could be better. Also, less salt would be nice.

My biggest concern was with all the schedule changes. Both inbound and outbound flights times were changed, including a time change less than two days before the scheduled departure.

better handling of the checked in luggage. they destroyed mine

Should’ve not separated those who checked-in online and those who checked-in at the airport

the process of paying for the excess baggage weight, the check in process and the boarding process are subhuman. this is an airline devoid of customer service

Cebu Pac has a habit of changing boarding gates. They do a lot of remote boarding. So just be attentive to the announcements, especially if it's near your boarding time.

It was a low cost flight, so no high expectations. The experience was average.

Crew was very helpful because I used a wheelchair to get around

Flight was delayed for almost 30 minutea, I had difficulties to catch up the connecting flight. Bit due to tje well organized Singapore airport I was able to make it

The flight was delayed for 3 hours and I missed my transit flight.

Was denied early boarding for a hot seat row 1C. I asked gate attendant why I couldn’t I board as I paid extra for that seat and it’s privileges that come from purchasing it. and she said no that Cebu Pacific does not allow it. When I boarded plane finally I had nowhere to put my bag as the seats behind me had taken my overhead area. The flight attendant said that the gate attendant was wrong. I fly a lot in the philippines and to Japan and now I have no choice but to fly with Air Asia. At least they board with zones and allow rows 1-3 to board early.

I was rebook by the other airpott because of the delayed flight

The flight was delayed by an hour . Traveling with 75 year old father was difficult and then when he asked for water he was asked to purchase :-) . Overall just an ok experience.

Overall service is good, the only thing I would like airasia to improve is there seating. Their seat handles are broken as well as the back rest

Boarding with air asia is excellent via organized lines by zone except when there is only 1 gate agent and no scanner, only by tearing tickets??? Crazy

The flight was supposed to depart at 9:25. It departed at 9:00. Im glad we were early and did not miss it.

They wouldn't even allow us to bring water from the fountain on board the aircraft.

Premium seats should have legroom this one didn't have it. I had 2 free checked bag but I got charged for while it shows on my reservation

Terrible airline! This airline just ruined our family vacation due to a 12 hours delay as a result of their operational issues.

Too many flight delays. Airport terminal serving Boracay needs upgrades.

Over 6 hours delayed.. using philippine air fleet planes are beat up dirty and uncomfortable. Have been flying air asia for over 4 years from Manila to Tokyo and kansai as well as several local flights from Manila to Bacolod and Cebu.. 3 planes were down for maintenance and caused havoc.. need to invest in new fleet or seriously clean and upgrade the existing fleet. Will not be flying anymore until fixed. Several options out there now to choose from as air asia prices have skyrocketed.. no point in using them anymore . Severally upset passenger here. They can’t even manage the queuing of Zones for boarding as it’s a crab fest free for all now. No discipline and let the passengers in line to board just run into any lane possible.. and priority luggage?? Forget it I’ve paid for it for the last 6 flights and never got it first.. air asia has turned into a expensive joke.. use Cebu pacific or zip air now..

We had three flight delays before eventually taking off 3 hours late. Inflight service was very limited, but it was a relatively short flight. Luggage was delivered promptly.

Mga tol, I am planning to bring my car to Cebu next year. Can you please help me the directions to get there. How long does the travel takes. What are the stop overs of the trip. Thanks a lot.

BicolExpress is offline

If your coming from manila, take the slex and drive up to matnog, sorsogon.Travel time 12 to 13 hours depende sa speed mo. Kung isasabay mo sightseeing daan ka sa cam.sur wake boarding facility and sa cagsawa ruins sa albay..Then Ro-Ro to allen, samar. Drive ka na ulit along western samar. Tatawid ng san juanico bridge to leyte. Marami ports ang leyte na may RoRo papunta cebu. Meron sa Ormoc, Isabel and Hindang and others na di ko alam. Pinakamalapit sa cebu is isabel leyte. Mga 2 1/2 hours from tacloban. May Roro dun papunta sa danao cebu. aprox. 4 hours ang pagtawid. Taga Albay ako but i'm working in Cebu. Uwi this xmas dalhin ko din car ko. Update kita kung magkano na bayad sa pagtawid and how is the road condition in samar. Leyte is good but not quite. Ang from manila to sorsogon no problem.

afrasay is offline

Tama si BicolExpress. I took that route last year. Two days lang nasa Cebu kana. Tip ko lang is to leave Allen early (3am), if you're gonna stay for the night, for Isabel Leyte. 11:30AM o 12:30 PM ang alis ng roro for Danao. Muntik na kaming maiwan ng ferry kasi 4:30 na kami nakaalis ng Allen, plus you have to take into consideration the road condition in Samar.

How about the Batangas - Mindoro - Panay - Negros - Cebu route? :car: 3903

Gerbo is offline

An alternate but rather circuitrous route is via Batangas-Mindoro-Panay-Negros-Cebu route. You will be able to pass by Puerto Galera, Caticlan (or Boracay), Capiz, Ilolilo City, Bacolod City, Dumaguete City, then southern tip of Cebu province. It's really more of a "pasyal trip". Nice if you bring along your family or you're in a group. If you are alone and would opt for a leisurely ride (di ka mapapagod)... take a Superferry to Cebu with the car as rolling cargo. Next day naduon ka na.

Thanks for all the info. I'd rather take the Batangas-Mindoro-Panay-Negros-Cebu route. I will bring my family with me, so the trip is more on sight seeing. Is there any precautions that I need to know? Hindi ba delikado ang way sa mga Niece People Around. What are the timings of the RORO from Batangas to Mindoro, Mindoro to Panay? Any suggestions of the good hotels and restaurants on the way to the trip? Where can I get a detailed map that indicates all the route. How many copies of OR and CR do I need? Pasensya na sa lahat nang hassle, I need to plan this ahead so that I know all the things that I gonna do for this trip.

PGMA opens Central Nautical Highway as Ro-Ro caravan “sails on” Monday SATURDAY, APRIL 26, 2008 | INFRASTRUCTURE The third component of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo’s Strong Republic Nautical Highway (SRNH) -- the Central Nautical Highway, -- is about to “sail on” on Monday from Bulan, Sorsogon in Luzon all the way to Misamis Oriental in Mindanao. The Central Nautical Highway Roll-on-Roll-off is the central trunk route connecting the province of Sorsogon to Balingoan in Misamis Oriental, passing through Central Visayas and connecting to the east-west trunk routes of Cawayan in Masbate, Bogo Port in central Cebu, Tubigon Port in Bohol, then to Jagna Port also in Bohol, and to the Mambajao Port in Camiguin. The President will send off on Monday the RO-RO caravan that will test the viability of the nautical highway at the Bulan Port and Cawayan Port. At some points of the voyage, she shall be joining the caravan. The RO-RO caravan’s “sail on” from bustling Jagna Port in Bohol on the way to Mambajao Port in scenic Camiguin will have the President on board as she will be presiding over Tuesday’s National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) Cabinet Group meeting as the caravan sails on to the Bohol Sea. The caravan ends Wednesday (April 30) in Cagayan de Oro City with the holding of the Central Philippines SRNH Conference. The SNRH -- an integrated set of highway segments and ferry routes, combined with road and ferry routes not formally part of SRNH -- is touted as one of the President’s legacy projects as it stands to spur economic development in the countryside. It links the island provinces through an efficient transport system that would enhance access to tourists areas throughout the country; and offers an alternate route for the flow of agricultural products at a lesser cost. The President has said that” …the nautical highway brings development closer to the provinces… that will connect the market of Luzon to the production centers, the agricultural production centers of Mindanao.” Travelling by Ro-Ro reduces the cost of travel by 37 to 43 percent for passengers, and 24 to 34 percent for cargo when compared to both sea and air travel. It also reduces travel time by 10 to 12 hours when compared to ordinary sea travel. Called the “highway of the sea,” the Ro-Ro system ferries trucks carrying goods and produce from Mindanao to Luzon and vice versa, directly to their destinations, without unloading in every port. The SRNH -- a 919-kilometer (land) and 137 nautical mile (sea) transportation infrastructure -- includes the Western Nautical Highway or the western seaboard trunk route that links Manila and Dipolog City in Mindanao, and the Eastern Nautical Highway or the eastern sea link that connects Biliran in Leyte to Surigao City. And, of the course, the Central Nautical Highway that would be opened Monday (April 28). Transportation Undersecretary Len Bautista stressed that the sea route, once it goes on its maiden sail Monday, must be operational from thereon. The Montenegro Lines and Negros Navigation would be plying the central seaboard trunk. http://www.gov.ph/news/default.asp?i=20750 here's the link of montenegro lines. nandito narin ang fares .. http://montenegrolines.com.ph/msli_web/ dont take he samar route. jeez unless your an off roader.

macjep69, First you need to have map of Southern Luzon, Samar and Leyte.Make sure that it is current, you can buy this in National bookstore. From Manila you're direction is Matnog, Sorsogon(So you will pass Laguna, Quezon Province and Bicol Region). From Matnog tatawid by Roro going to Allen Northern Samar and then travel ka uli by land from Allen Samar to Isabel Leyte and then Roro from Isabel Leyte to Danao. Timing nang Roro, sa matnog to allen parang 24hrs yon(1hr travel), isabel layte to danao 12:30pm daily pero may dinagdag yata na isang biyahe (03:30am)-travel time is 4hrs. Ang ginawa kasi namin from Alabang travel kami nang madaling araw to matnog (15hrs yong travel namin dahil mabagal lang ang takbo ko), mga 9pm tumawid kami nang allen samar 10pm nasa allen na kami, rest kami sandali, then around 3:30am travel kami uli from allen to isabel leyte, mga almost 10hrs din ang travel namin.

Top 5 airlines serving from manila to cebu city.

My flight got canceled and I nearly missed my connecting flight to el nido because of this . So I had to get up at 4am to catch a ferry to cebu and travel 7 hours to the airport I am not happy at all

Driving an EV from Manila to Mindanao: Very doable

D ESPITE the increasing popularity and availability of electric vehicles in the country, many people still have reservations about adding an EV to their garage. This hesitation is usually because of one (or both!) of two things: prohibitive price of the vehicles and "range anxiety." Let's face it. Even though many EVs, especially if you factor in regenerative charging, can easily get you from Manila to Baguio and back on a fully charged battery, range anxiety is real. This is probably because we're so accustomed to being able to top up at any of the numerous gas stations we pass along the route.

Especially in our country whose infrastructure isn't as sophisticated or "ready" as other more advanced countries, it is good to see that more and more charging stations are cropping up, albeit most are doing so independently.

SM Supermalls EV charging stations

Did you know that SM currently has 32 EV chargers distributed among 27 SM Supermalls nationwide? This makes SM Supermalls the biggest chain of malls in the country to offer this service.

"The EV charging stations in SM Supermalls are one of the sustainability initiatives under the SM Green Movement. Aside from advocating air conservation and clean energy through this innovation, we champion solid waste management, water conservation, energy efficiency and disaster resilience for a greener, safer tomorrow," said Steven Tan, president of SM Supermalls.

Twenty-six of the 27 SM EV charging stations are equipped with Wallbox Pulsar Plus 7.4-kilowatt (kW) alternating current (AC) chargers with Type 2 connectors that are standard for European and Asian vehicles from 2018 onwards. The one located in SM Baguio, however, is equipped with a Level 3 Tritium RTM 75kW direct current (DC) fast charger with CCS1/CCS2 and CHAdeMO connectors that allows for faster charging. These connectors are compatible with a wide range of battery EVs from Asian, European and American makes.

In Metro Manila, SM Malls with EV charging station are: SM North Edsa, SM Megamall, SM Mall of Asia, SM Aura, SM Southmall, The Podium, SM City Valenzuela, SM City Grand Central, SM City Fairview, SM City Manila, SM City San Lazaro, SM City Sta. Mesa, SM City Marikina, SM City Bicutan and SM City BF Parañaque.

Aside from SM Baguio, the charging stations located outside Metro Manila are in SM City Clark, SM Center Tuguegarao Downtown, SM City Trece Martires, SM City Sta. Rosa, Sky Ranch Tagaytay, SM City Naga, SM City Cebu, SM Seaside City Cebu, SM City CDO Uptown, SM CDO Downtown Premier and SM Lanang Premier.

For now, charging at SM Malls is free for anyone who wants to avail of the services, for as long as your vehicle is compatible or you have your own adaptors. This is regardless of how long they need to charge their vehicles, and depending on availability (first-come, first-serve basis).

Can I get to Mindanao in an EV?

Would it be possible to travel from Manila to Mindanao in an EV just relying on SM Charging stations? Let's do the math. Say for example we take the BYD Dolphin EV (currently priced at P 1.688 million) that has a range of 400 kilometers (km) — starting from Araneta Center in Quezon City with a full charge.

The first leg south-bound would be towards SM Sta. Rosa (approximately 45.5 km) to top up the battery. Even though the initial distance is quite short, topping up the charge as far as possible from Manila is crucial as the next drive is going to be a long one. The BYD Dolphin can plug into SM's Wallbox Pulsar Plus 7.4kW AC charger using a CCS2 to GBT adaptor. According to BYD Philippines President Mark Tieng, it will take 40 minutes to charge 10 percent, equivalent to 40 km.

From Sta. Rosa, it's an 8-hour drive (356 km) to Naga City that is honestly challenging no matter what kind of vehicle you bring. Due to mall hours and time constraints, you will need to wait until morning to plug into SM Naga's EV charging station. Since the mall opens at 10 a.m. and a full-charge would take about 6 to 7 hours, you will have just enough time to drive to the Matnog Pier (210 km) to catch the roll-on, roll-off (RORO) vessel to Cebu that leaves at midnight. The voyage that crosses Luzon to Visayas will take around 9 hours — enough time to sleep and regroup. Upon arrival in Bogo City, travel time to SM Seaside City Cebu (100 km) will take about three hours. Since charging would take another 6 to 7 hours, you just might need to spend the night in the city again before heading to the Pier (7 km) to take the RORO vessel that crosses to Mindanao that will sail for 8 to10 hours. Upon arrival in Cagayan de Oro, it's just a six-minute drive (2.4 km) to the nearest SM Mall.

This, of course, is just theoretical. We never said it was going to be easy, but it is possible. Also, it's worth noting that charging times would be drastically shorter if the stations were all equipped with fast DC chargers like the one in SM Baguio. But again, with the given equipment, it is still possible.

So, while there still isn't an official list of EV charging stations in the country, it's good to know that most SM Supermalls offer the service and are more than "happy to serve" your EV charging needs.

A land trip from Luzon to Mindanao is doable with EV cars like the BYD Dolphin.

Cebu Pacific Air (CEB) announced the resumption of flight service operation at the Tacloban Airport after the Aviation authority finished with its emergency runway repair works at the airport.

Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) spokesperson Eric Apolonio said Tacloban Airport resumed normal operation at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday after it completed the emergency asphalt repair of Runway 18/36.

“CEB was able to conduct a safety assessment of the runway at the Tacloban Airport following examinations and repairs performed by the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines,” the CEB management said in a statement.

On Wednesday, the airline suspended at least 10 flights in Manila and Cebu to and from Tacloban Airport due to the emergency runway repair. Passengers affected have been offered options through the Manage Booking portal on the CEB website.

The CEB management clarified that the cancellation was due to an infrastructure failure at the airport, not its fault, as the damaged runway was being repaired.
