World’s Largest Cruise Ships

This week, the Harmony of the Seas sailed out of Southampton Harbor to the awe of many adorning eyes. At a length of 361 meters and a passenger capacity of 6,780, she is now the largest floating cruise ship in the world.

In this blog, we ask the question of to what extent the Harmony of the Seas is a first of its kind? Does the ships size and facilities available eclipse those before it, or is it just a small step up the ladder of the growing capacity of modern day cruise ships?

The creator

Royal Caribbean International, a Norwegian-founded cruise line company based in Miami is responsible for the design and production of the Harmony of the Seas. They have gained increasing public recognition and media attention over the past 30-40 years for creating bigger and better cruise ships from model to model.

In 1978, they launched Song of America, which was over twice the size of the previous model Sun Viking. In fact, 8 out of 10 of the worlds largest cruise ships all belong to Royal Caribbean International, demonstrating both their ability and desire to complete things on a big scale.

So just how big are the worlds biggest cruise liners?

1. The Harmony of the Seas

At 361 meters long and 70 meters high, she is the largest cruise ship in terms of both length and height. She is also the largest by gross tonnage, beating her nearest competitor by other 1,700 gross tonnes.

Her passenger capacity is 6,360 at maximum and her equivalent length is that of 4 football (soccer) fields. She boats the like of 20 restaurants, 23 swimming pools and 11,252 works of art.

2. Allure of the Seas

Also a creation of Royal Caribbean International, she is just 1.1 ft shorter than the newly launched Harmony of the Seas. She has a gross tonnage of 225,282, slightly less than the Harmony of the Seas, which has a GT of 226,963.

The 6,296 passengers she holds all have access to luxury facilities including an aquaroom, zip-line, champagne bar, casino and a central park.

3. Anthem of the Seas

Royal Caribbean International continues to dominate the list of biggest cruise ships, with the next entry being Anthem of the Seas. This ship measures at 1,139 feet, which is taller than The Eiffel Tower. Her passenger capacity reaches 4,905 people at maximum, quite a step down from Allure of the Seas. Her decks host a whole range of luxurious features, including a restaurant from Jamie Oliver! She has two sister ships, Quantum of the Seas and Ovation of the Seas, both from Royal Caribbean.

4. Norwegian Escape

The next ship in the countdown breaks the chain of Royal Caribbean International’s dominance. Another Norwegian company called Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings makes this cruise liner. As you can tell by this point in the article, the renown of Norway’s maritime industry is no myth. This spectacular vessel measures at 1,098 feet, just 44 short of the smallest ship in the Anthem/Quantum/Ovation series above. Life on board offers 24-hour room service, a French bistro café and a steakhouse.

5. Liberty of the Seas

The brief disruption of Royal Caribbean International’s hold over the top 5 largest cruise ships swiftly comes to an end, as their 2013 model Liberty of the Seas takes the fifth spot. Measuring at 1,112 feet she is actually longer than the Norwegian Escape, but over 10,000 gross tonnes less in weight, which is the measure we are using to determine what is biggest. This ship is just as grand as those listed above, with a champagne bar and spa.

Royal Caribbean International has been responsible for creating some of the largest cruise liners in the world. Soon, MSC Cruises is set to shake this up with the release of their newest ship, the MSC Meraviglia. It will measure at 315 meters in length, which is shorter than the RCI fleet. However, it has a gross tonnage of 167,000, bigger than RCI’s Anthem/Quantum/Ovation series. This put’s it at number 3 on our list, a big leap for MSC. We are very excited about seeing it.

OASIS of the SEAS remote control cruise ship model

Nearly as tall as the Empire State building, the 18-deck Oasis of the Seas accommodates up to 5,400 passengers (a record) plus a crew of 2,160. When launched, she was the most spectacular cruise ship ever. There are seven incredible "neighborhoods", each home to countless unique activities and experiences, from the groundbreaking Boardwalk with its colorful carousel to the spectacular amphitheatre style AquaTheater with it's mesmerizing high diving acrobatic shows. This aqua giant offers all the mainland amenities such as a casino, multiple night clubs, several bars, lounges, a karaoke club, a comedy club, 5 swimming pools, a zip-line, a miniature golf course, volleyball basketball courts, theme parks, nurseries for children.

MS Oasis of the Seas boasts the first living park at sea. Her Central Park has over 12,000 plants and 56 trees, many of which reach two and a half decks high and green walls with tropical plants spanning 25ft and which are four decks high. The Royal Promenade has a bar fitted which ascends and descends over three decks and is aptly called The Rising Tide. Many of the ship's interiors were extensively decorated by muralist Clarissa Parish.

The Oasis of the Seas's displacement (the actual mass of the vessel) is at approximately 100,000 metric tons--almost the weight of an American Nimitz-class aircraft carrier. The ship's officers are very pleased with the her stability and performance. During her first transatlantic crossing, she faced winds "almost up to hurricane force" and seas in excess of 39 ft.

I went on 2 of Royal Caribbean's largest and newest cruise ships. I enjoyed them, but they're not for everyone.

• Both mega-ships are jam-packed with amenities, dining options, and people.
• They might not be for you if you want a quiet cruise to unique destinations.  

Before booking a vacation at sea, travelers should always research the best cruise line and ship for their needs.

Royal Caribbean has become synonymous with giant, family-friendly cruise ships

According to its current expansion plan, by 2028, about a third of Royal Caribbean's fleet will consist of mega-ships.

The latest addition, the 1,196-foot-long and 248,663-gross-ton Icon of the Seas, set sail in January, unseating its less than two-year-old predecessor, Wonder of the Seas , as the world's largest cruise liner.

Together, the two vessels can accommodate a whopping 19,238 people — 4,554 crew and 14,684 guests.

At almost all times of the year, these throngs of travelers can be seen running around the ships' eight neighborhoods, lining up for waterslides, and indulging at a combined 29 bars and 48 eateries.

I've attended complimentary sailings on Wonder and Icon, the longest being three nights on the latter. From their colorful pool decks to their inescapable crowds, as a solo adult traveler, I was equal parts entertained, overwhelmed, and overstimulated the entire time.

But admittedly, I had fun. I do love a good waterslide — and Wonder has three of them, while Icon has six.

If you plan on cruising with your children — and if they, like me, love activities like rock climbing and mini-golfing — Royal Caribbean's mega-ships could be your best option.

Its two largest and newest vessels are jam-packed with things to do. They each have more than 20 dining options and dozens of unique activities, a shortlist of which includes ice-skating rinks, ziplines, and shopping mall-like walkways.

But don't expect a peaceful retreat. The rowdy bar-hopping adults and screaming children at the water playground aren't exactly conducive to a relaxing vacation.

Mega-vessels might not be for you if you want a quiet, itinerary-focused cruise

If you want a relaxing and upscale vacation — maybe one that doesn't involve crowds of children — Royal Caribbean's behemoth vessels shouldn't be your top choice.

There are many ways to have a luxury vacation on Icon of the Seas . But unless you want to pay for upcharged amenities at every turn, you might be better off spending more upfront to reserve a more premium cruise line — especially if you're interested in cruising for the destinations, and not the ships.

After all, like most of Royal Caribbean's largest vessels, both Icon and Wonder are exclusively sailing in the Caribbeans.

Many desirable destinations like French Polynesia have set restrictions on cruises , including limits on ship size, amid concerns of pollution and overcrowding.

If stopping at these ports — or really anywhere outside the Caribbean — is at the top of your vacation wish list, you'll have to prioritize a smaller Royal Caribbean ship or go with higher-end companies like Oceania , Silversea, and Regent Seven Seas.

You might not get a waterpark, but at least you'll get a quieter vacation to destinations no mega-ship will likely ever be allowed to visit.

It’s not every day a new cruise line arrives. The debut of the remarkable Explora I was a moment years in the making for Explora Journeys , the upstart luxury operator that aims to bring a European sensibility to the world of vacations at sea. So far, the project is a smashing success, thanks to the ship’s low-key vibe, standout food and beverage, and intriguing itineraries that visit in-demand ports in Northern Europe, the Mediterranean, and the Caribbean. My own August 2023 trip on Explora I , from Copenhagen to Hamburg, Germany, included fulfilling visits to places such as Oslo and the town of Stavanger, Norway, a gateway to adventurous hiking with a postcard-perfect Old Town. The ship itself was also a destination, with its abundance of outdoor space — including an alfresco fitness center — and pools at seemingly every turn. The 461 suites, all of them with balconies, are filled with luxurious touches such as Frette linens and robes, heated marble floors, and Dyson hair dryers. But Explora I truly shines when it comes to food: During the week I was aboard, it was impossible to find a bad meal — and I was often astonished at the quality of, in particular, the pasta served in the Emporium Marketplace and the sushi on offer at Sakura, two of the nine restaurants aboard. The most ambitious of them all is Anthology, a rotating-chef concept that has seen a residency from seafood whiz Mario Ulaissi, known for his Michelin three-starred restaurant on Italy's Adriatic coast, and that recently welcomed Emma Bengtsson, from Aquavit , in New York City. Much has been made of Explora I ’s Rolex boutique — the first on any cruise ship — but for my money, the other shops on board were more interesting: The company has tapped family-owned businesses around the world to create capsule collections of resort wear, handbags, fragrances, sunglasses, and beautiful gifts that can’t be found elsewhere. Oceania Cruises’ Vista

The new Oceania Vista is in a class of its own; no really, it’s the first in Oceania Cruises ’ new Allura class. Of its 11 bars and restaurants, three are entirely new to the Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings–owned brand — including a high-end cocktail spot called Founders’ Bar, serving 26 intricate drinks that use house-made syrups and top-shelf booze like Whistle Pig and parsley-infused Grey Goose. As Oceania levels up, the cruise line has produced a ship that feels more like a floating resort than the vessels that came before. There’s pickleball; a health-conscious restaurant, Aquamar, serving made-to-order salads and pressed juices; and a coffee shop that looks like one in walking distance of my home in L.A. (marble counters, gold accents, leather bar stools) and pulls an espresso shot of similar quality. Vista has more suites than others in the Oceania fleet, too: There are 14 Oceania Suites (up to 1,200 square feet); eight Vista Suites (up to 1,850 square feet); and three Owner’s Suites with Ralph Lauren Home decor and two massive terraces (2,400 square feet). But the most hotel-like touch? A celebrity chef–driven restaurant, Toscana, where Giada De Laurentiis — the ship’s godmother — supplied two recipes for the menu. As someone who watched a lot of Everyday Italian in the early aughts, I was particularly excited to try her signature, Capri-inspired lemon spaghetti, and lemon-cream sauce with grilled shrimp and capers didn’t disappoint. Regent Seven Seas Cruises’ Seven Seas Grandeur

Regent Seven Seas Cruises’ sixth ship, the Seven Seas Grandeur , sailed its inaugural season in December, joining sibling ships Seven Seas Explorer and Seven Seas Splendor as the newest member of the luxury fleet. The cruise line is a favorite among T+L readers for its gorgeous ships and all-inclusive pricing that covers unlimited shore excursions, dining at specialty restaurants, and even round-trip airfare. Grandeur lives up to its name thanks to stunning, art-filled spaces designed by cruise ship interior experts Studio Dado: signature restaurant Compass Rose is enchanting with interiors inspired by a fairy-tale forest; the Observation Lounge sparkles with an undulating chandelier and swanky bar; and the $11,000-per-night Regent Suite has a private en suite spa and custom Treesse mini pool. As I boarded Grandeur for the ship’s inaugural sailing, I was mesmerized by the grand staircase and glittering chandelier. And with a maximum capacity of 744 guests, I found it easy to take time to myself in the myriad of quiet spots tucked throughout the ship, whether in the Serene Spa and Wellness area, in the Library, or on the Sports Deck overlooking the ocean. Seven restaurants include specialty steakhouse Prime 7, pan-Asian restaurant Pacific Rim, and breakfast and lunch buffet La Veranda, which refines the cruise buffet experience with daily specials like paella and sushi. Several bars and lounges, a pool and hot tubs, a casino, Broadway-style productions, and cooking classes at the Culinary Arts Kitchen make the ship a destination in itself, though guests will want to take advantage of those included excursions on Caribbean, Central American, North American, and European itineraries, ranging from seven to 16 nights, during the ship’s 2024 season. Silversea’s Silver Nova

Carrying 728 passengers, Silver Nova is big for the luxury sector, but boasts a hugely important metric: a capacious passenger space ratio — that is, the number of guests relative to the size of the ship. Simply put, this ship offers more elbow room per passenger than almost any other cruise vessel. Silver Nova is wrapped in glass, with an asymmetrical layout; the funnel is positioned off-center, so is the pool, offering an expansive, uncluttered pool deck. Many features of the brand-new ship recall previous Silversea successes, my favorite of which is the S.A.L.T. (Sea And Land Taste) program, expanded for Silver Nova . S.A.L.T. perks include a gorgeous, sea-facing lab for hands-on culinary lessons (at no additional cost), plus a new concept, the Chef’s Table, where an 11-course menu is prepared for just 24 diners. All facets of the S.A.L.T. ecosystem, including ingredients, a bar, lectures, and shore excursions, are keyed to the region Nova is sailing. While food is a drawing card for Silver Nova , accommodations also received a revamp. Tied to the theme of bringing the outside in, there are brilliant new suites found in the aft starboard corner of the ship, with wraparound balconies revealing a 270-degree view.  This is where you can tuck me in when I win the lottery and head off on a world cruise.
