Metro Transit steps up safety efforts with monitors displaying bus behavior for all to see

Eva Hyvarinen was recently on a Metro Transit Route 11 bus when she noticed movement near the front. She looked up and did a double-take.

She saw a TV monitor mounted behind the driver displaying images from outside the bus, then inside and finally an image of her.

"At first, I thought, what in the world is that," said the Minneapolis resident who has been riding public transportation since 1982. "Oh, that is this bus. I found it disconcerting. It made me sick. I didn't see any explanation for it."

Metro Transit is installing monitors that show what is being captured by onboard cameras on hundreds of its buses this year as the agency takes more steps to improve safety on the state's largest public transportation system.

Like cameras at self-checkout stations in retail outlets, the purpose "is to remind people when on transit there are expectations that you behave in a certain way. It's a reminder there is a watchful eye and their behavior is being recorded," said spokesman Drew Kerr.

As part of a concerted effort to beat back crime, Metro Transit over the past year has put into place steps outlined in its Safety and Security Action Plan to address issues such as homelessness, smoking, drug use and violent crime. The agency has stationed unarmed security guards at troubled light-rail platforms and transit stations, put Transit Rider Investment Program (TRIP) agents on trains to crack down on fare evasion and revised its Code of Conduct to give riders clear explanations of what is expected of them on trains and buses.

The monitors are part of the action plan.

Frontline staff like drivers like Howard Hudson suggested Metro Transit install the screens as another way to deter bad behavior.

"I like them," he said. "I'm excited about being part of change. They record what is going on."

The agency is spending about $3,000 per bus to install the system, which takes footage from six to eight cameras and displays what was recorded on the screen near the front of the bus. The images, which change every few seconds, are beamed back to headquarters where transit staff can watch and dispatch help if necessary.

"There are no dead spots," said Metro Transit Chief Operating Officer Brian Funk.

Hyvarinen, who suffers from motion sickness, says the rotating images are nauseating and invasive. While she is aware security cameras are on the bus, she doesn't see the point of broadcasting what they pick up.

"I don't want to see anybody in the back of the bus, and I don't want to see things I don't want to see," Hyvarinen said. "What do I do if I see something that looks dangerous? If people are going to fight, a camera won't stop them from having a fight. It does not make me feel safer."

Cops hunt for woman who pepper-sprayed MTA cleaner on Bronx train

THE BRONX, N.Y. (PIX11) —There were no cameras on the train where a woman pepper-sprayed an MTA cleane r in the Bronx early Monday, police said.

The assailant was, however, captured on surveillance video leaving the subway station after attacking the 44-year-old worker on the No.1 train in the Van Cortland Park-242nd Street subway station in Kingsbridge at around 4 a.m., according to NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny.

“As of right now, there’s no video on in the train car but there is video on the platform. We came up with some good stills. Unfortunately, her face is masked up,” Kenny said at a press briefing Tuesday.

Kenny said the suspect was sleeping on the train and became belligerent when the MTA worker woke her up so she could continue to clean the train. The victim was sprayed in the face and a co-worker took her to the hospital for treatment, police said.

The woman then fled and remained at large, as of Wednesday. The NYPD released a photo of the suspect.

A similar attack happened on a stopped subway train in Queens last Monday. An MTA employee was punched in the face after waking a sleeping man and asking him to get off the train, according to authorities.

The suspect in that incident was arrested without incident, police said.

MTA workers have called for increased safety measures in subways following several attacks on employees. Gov. Kathy Hochul has implemented a new safety plan, which includes more random bag checks and the National Guard joining the NYPD in subway stations.

Provincial gas tax funding will help operate and expand local public transit services

The Ontario government is supporting transit in Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound with a $1,052,544 investment from the 2023-24 Gas Tax program. The funding can be used to expand service hours, increase routes, purchase new vehicles and improve accessibility to increase transit ridership.

“This investment is fantastic news for transit riders in our community,” said Rick Byers, MPP for Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound. “Under the leadership of Premier Ford, we will continue to invest in local transit to drive economic growth, make travel more convenient and connect people to the things that matter most to them.”

The breakdown of funding for Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound is as follows:

• Town of Hanover (including of Arran-Elderslie, Brockton, Chatsworth, Grey Highlands, Hanover, Huron-Kinloss, Kincardine, Saugeen Shores, Southgate and West Grey) - $740,828
• Municipality of Meaford - $65,797
• City of Owen Sound - $245,919

“No matter where you live, Ontarians deserve access to fast, reliable and affordable public transit,” said Prabmeet Sarkaria, Minister of Transportation. “Our government is helping municipalities improve their transit systems now and for decades to come.”

“The gas tax funding directly supports Saugeen Mobility and Regional Transit Corporation (SMART) on behalf of the Municipalities of Arran-Elderslie, Brockton, Chatsworth, Grey Highlands, Hanover, Huron-Kinloss, Kincardine, Saugeen Shores, Southgate and West Grey,” said Hanover Mayor Sue Paterson. “SMART is an important service in our region, providing an accessible transit option for our residents to get to and from commitments such as medical appointments, community events and shopping.”

“These funds support Meaford Moves+ which is our Accessible Transit, providing door-to-door pick-ups and drop-offs,” said Meaford Mayor Ross Kentner. “For residents with disabilities this is such a valuable service.”

“Local public transit is an essential service in our community, helping people get to work, school, and medical appointments," said Owen Sound Mayor Ian Boddy. "This investment from the Province through the Gas Tax program will allow us to continue to provide a high level of transit service in Owen Sound while supporting our growing region.”
