Led Zeppelin – Australia 1972

Led Zeppelin’s 1972 Australasian Tour was the only tour of Australia and New Zealand by the British rock band.

The group had built up a loyal following down under with their first four albums all making the top 3 on the Australian charts, (both Led Zep II and III reached No.1).

The tour commenced on February 16 and concluded on February 29, 1972.

The original plan for this tour was for the group to stop off en route at Singapore for a concert on February 14, but the local authorities refused their entry due to local laws banning males from wearing long hair!

Led Zeppelin received rave reviews for this tour and black and white footage of some of their concert at Sydney on February 27, were filmed by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, some of this footage was later made available on the Led Zeppelin DVD, released in 2003.

16th Feb 1972 Led Zeppelin made their Australian live debut when they kicked off a six-date tour at the Subiaco Oval, Perth. Police battled with over 500 fans who rammed locked gates trying to get into the concert. Over 4,000 fans stood outside the venue without tickets.

17th Feb 1972 Police raided the Scarborough Hotel in Perth, Australia where all the members of Led Zeppelin were staying after their debut live performance in the country the night before. Police woke all the members and searched their baggage and belongings but no drugs were found. Jimmy Page told a local paper: “They came into our rooms and started abusing us – they were very rude”.

18th Feb 1972 Memorial Drive, Adelaide. Zeppelin had brought to Adelaide the largest PA system seen in Australia to produce what was expected to be the loudest rock show ever heard.

20th Feb 1972 Led Zeppelin played an afternoon show at Kooyong Tennis Courts, Melbourne to over 15,000 fans. Zeppelin were forced off the stage near the end of the show after a rainstorm developed suddenly at this outdoor venue, but returned to finish the set.

24th Feb 1972 Led Zeppelin appeared in front of over 20,000 fans at the Western Springs Stadium, Auckland, New Zealand, the group’s first ever gig in New Zealand. News reviews the next day reported the band could be heard over 5 miles from the Stadium.

27th Feb 1972 Led Zeppelin appeared at Sydney Showgrounds, Sydney in Australia, over 25,000 fans attending the show.

29th Feb 1972 On the last date of an Australian tour, Led Zeppelin played at the Festival Hall in Brisbane Festival Hall.

On the 20th anniversary of the original release of Led Zeppelin IV , it was announced that ‘Stairway To Heaven’ had logged up an estimated 2,874,000 radio plays, (back to back, that would run for 44 years solid). As of 2000, the song had been broadcast on radio over three million times.

ARC present LED ZEPPELIN IV with KRAM (SPIDERBAIT) / DARREN MIDDLETON (POWDERFINGER) / MARK WILSON (JET) / DAVEY LANE (YOU AM I)

“This was an incredible performance!”    HiFi Way

“Some of Australia’s best musicians playing some of the greatest songs of all time.”   The Music

“ARC takes a bow for curtain call to a second standing ovation and depart. The audience are having none of this, demanding a return for a final encore.”   BMA

Aussie supergroup AUSTRALIAN ROCK COLLECTIVE (ARC) - Darren Middleton (Powderfinger), Mark Wilson (Jet), Davey Lane (You Am I) and Kram (Spiderbait) - are joining forces again to bring to life one of the greatest albums of all time, Led Zeppelin’s 1971 masterpiece,  Led Zeppelin IV.

Hitting the road for a 12-date national tour in June 2024, ARC will perform Led Zeppelin IV in full, from start to finish, to be followed by a second set playing classics and fan favourites selected from Led Zeppelin’s lauded catalogue.

Hailed as one of the most innovative, successful and influential bands of modern music, their untitled fourth album commonly known as Led Zeppelin IV features the eight-minute epic “Stairway to Heaven,” “Going to California,” “Black Dog,” and “Rock and Roll.”

ARC present Led Zeppelin IV marks the band’s fifth national outing preceded the unanimously praised and sold-out tours paying homage to Pink Floyd’s The Dark Side of the Moon (2023), Neil Young’s Harvest (2022), The Beatles’ Let It Be (2021) and the extended dates of their debut tour, The Beatles’ Abbey Road (2019-2020).

Led Zeppelin - Robert Plant, Jimmy Page, John Bonham and John Paul Jones – released Led Zeppelin IV on November 8, 1971. Produced by guitarist Jimmy Page, the album was recorded between December 1970 and February 1971 at the historic English cottage, Headley Grange.

The informal recording environment inspired the band, allowing them to try different arrangements of material and create songs in various styles. After the band's previous album, Led Zeppelin III , received lukewarm reviews from critics they decided their fourth album would officially be untitled and would be represented instead by four symbols – one chosen by each band member – without featuring the name or any other details on the cover.

As with prior albums, most of the material was written by the band, though there was one cover song, a hard rock re-interpretation of the Memphis Minnie blues song “When the Levee Break.”

Led Zeppelin IV was a commercial and critical success and the band’s best-selling album, shipping more than 37 million copies worldwide while critics have regularly placed it highly on lists of the greatest albums of all time. Led Zeppelin were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1995.

In a 2014 revisit of  Led Zeppelin IV ,  The Music  reviewer Guido Farnell wrote that the album was a “ game changer  that put definition to the term hard rock and created a rule book that was to be ripped up and burned by the punks and post-punks a few short years later.”

As a supergroup boasting 33 ARIA Awards and 16 Top Ten ARIA albums, each ARC member brings a wealth of experience, contributing to the success of renowned Australian rock bands.

ARC’s latest musical odyssey promises an unforgettable experience as they breathe new life into Led Zeppelin’s iconic 1971 album. From the soaring Stairway to Heaven to the electrifying Rock and Roll, ARC will deliver the entire Led Zeppelin IV album in all its glory. Following this sonic journey, the band will treat audiences to a second set featuring handpicked classics and fan favourites from Led Zeppelin’s revered catalogue.

Renowned as one of the most influential bands in modern music, Led Zeppelin’s untitled fourth album, commonly known as Led Zeppelin IV, has left an indelible mark on the musical landscape. Produced by guitar virtuoso Jimmy Page, the album was a product of creative exploration at the historic English cottage, Headley Grange, between December 1970 and February 1971.

In a departure from traditional album covers, Led Zeppelin IV featured no title or band name, opting instead for four symbols, each chosen by a band member. The album’s diverse range, including the iconic Stairway to Heaven and a hard rock rendition of When the Levee Breaks, earned critical acclaim and commercial success, becoming the band’s best-selling album with over 37 million copies shipped worldwide.

ARC, having previously captivated audiences with homages to Pink Floyd, Neil Young, and The Beatles, is gearing up to add Led Zeppelin IV to their list of celebrated tributes.

Tickets go on general sale at midday on Thursday, November 16. My Live Nation members can seize the opportunity during the pre-sale starting at 11 am on Wednesday, November 15.

JASON BONHAM’S LED ZEPPELIN EVENING – April 2023 AUSTRALIAN TOUR

  • Greg Phillips
  • January 31, 2023

led zeppelin tour au

After a sell-out Australian tour in 2018, The Jason Bonham Led Zeppelin Evening returns for 2023.

The name Bonham is synonymous with Led Zeppelin. John Bonham, or Bonzo, as he was affectionately known, was considered THE BEST drummer of all time before his tragic death in 1980. Carrying the weight of his late father’s legacy, son Jason Bonham – a drummer in his own right since the age of 5, has carved his own name out amongst his musical peers and fans as the real deal and worthy successor to his dad’s crown.

Having played in countless bands over the years including AIR-RACE, Bonham and Motherland which have earnt him Grammy nominations and credibility, Jason was then asked to step into his late father’s shoes by invitation of Jimmy Page and played with the surviving members of Led Zeppelin in New York City in 1988.

Since then Jason has played with a number of other bands, including other Led Zeppelin reunions and has now formed his own project – The Jason Bonham Led Zeppelin Evening which is a tribute to his father’s music.

In fact it was playing in the Led Zeppelin reunion in 2007 that sparked interest in wanting to start the Jason Bonham Led Zeppelin Experience.

“To be in that band is a phenomenal feeling,” says Jason on playing with the original Led Zep. “You can’t really describe it regardless of whether your Dad was in the band or not, it’s just one of the greatest experiences to be in that seat and playing those songs, it’s a dream come true.”

With such a vast and iconic catalogue to choose from, the hardest part for Bonham is deciding the set-list.

“You never want to leave anything out,” he confirms.  “There were so many sides to the band – the acoustic side, the blues side – there are so many great songs we can play.”

After a sell-out Australian tour in 2018, The Jason Bonham Led Zeppelin Evening returns for 2023. It’s a band of accomplished and virtuoso musicians hand-picked by Bonham to justifiably bring the Led Zep canon to blistering life. “It’s the greatest to represent my family and play these songs live!”

Crafting ‘Stereophonic’: How ‘Terrifying’ Rehearsals, Creative Clashes and a Soundproof Studio Led to Broadway’s Buzziest Show

Stereophonic

A little over 10 years ago, David Adjmi was on an airplane, listening to Led Zeppelin’s “Babe I’m Gonna Leave You,” and picturing Robert Plant recording the vocals.

“It’s communicating desire and pain and anguish and torture and lust,” Adjmi says of the song. “I was thinking about all of these conflicting emotions and imagining him singing the raw vocal in a studio — the state he must have gotten into to sing it.”

Popular on Variety

Set entirely in a studio, “Stereophonic” examines the evolving relationships between musicians in a battle of egos and creative control. There are standout performances and Tony-worthy songs, but the show’s most intriguing aspect is how it plays with sound, conducting audio through a permeable glass barrier separating the control room and the live room.

“The idea felt pregnant with theatrical possibility,” says director Daniel Aukin , who was approached by Adjmi in 2014 and signed on even before there was a script.

For much of the three-hour show, the band members are sequestered with their instruments in the soundproof, fishbowl-like live room upstage. On the other side of the glass, the studio engineers man a mixing console that controls the flow of audio. Sometimes the engineers sever the sound from the live room so the musicians can’t hear their gossipy banter. Other times the audience is shut out of the band’s conversations behind the glass.

“What’s terrifying about this play is that until we got into Playwrights, we didn’t know if it would work,” Rumery adds. “The rehearsal process didn’t remotely reflect what the performance process would be.”

Starring Sarah Pidgeon, Chris Stack, Tom Pecinka, Juliana Canfield, Will Brill, Andrew R. Butler and Eli Gelb, the play demands more than just chemistry between its featured players. The actors had to develop the musical chops and roots-rock harmony to sell Will Butler ’s songs — which accelerate the story and heighten the emotion throughout — as well as execute carefully choreographed mess-ups and do-overs to be convincing as sparring, coke-snorting bandmates.

Butler, a Grammy-winning artist and former member of Arcade Fire, helped the actors become a band by persuading them to open for him in Brooklyn last fall. “They’ve seen shows, but they’ve never stood onstage and felt the power that comes from you,” he says. “We got to layer in some of that history for them.”

And while the play will inevitably draw comparison to Fleetwood Mac and the tumultuous creation of “Rumours,” Adjmi is bemused by the urge to find the “real” story in a fictional play.

“I keep getting the question, ‘Is this Fleetwood Mac? Is it this and that?’ Why do people want to know that?” he asks. “There is no real story. The whole thing is invented.”

With its classic rock soundtrack and California chill, “Stereophonic” has an immersive hangout vibe accentuated by hyper-naturalistic dialogue. Characters are constantly talking over each other in a way that feels spontaneous, but the script — filled with interruptive double-slashes and written in two columns demarcating the separate rooms — is anything but. “Timing is everything,” Adjmi writes in an introductory note. “Nothing is arbitrary.”

“My writing is extremely exacting to a degree that is sort of unnatural in American theater,” Adjmi says. “And I’m a little embarrassed by it because I don’t know why I demand so much from everybody.”

Yet Aukin offsets the writer’s tight grip on the words with a sense of freedom and flexibility. “The push-pull between us really served the play and created a combustible, interesting energy,” says Adjmi.

At a tech rehearsal just days before the show opened previews, Aukin is still completely reshaping scenes and tweaking dialogue, as Adjmi watches nervously from the orchestra. “Let’s do it badly a few times,” Aukin tells the actors while toying with Act II. “We’re gonna find it.”

Five rows back, Adjmi whispers, “This is all new. … It’s terrifying.”

Even after the show opens previews on Broadway, Aukin is still tinkering. “Sometimes you have things that felt absolutely necessary, and then you go, ‘Maybe that was just scaffolding,’” he says.

“Because of the savagery of parts of this play, we talked very openly about having very clear lines of communication among everyone,” Aukin says.

Adjmi is more candid.

“Sometimes people feel like I am pushing them to a degree that is not quite human, and I think they’re right,” he says. “I know that I have to let go, and I will let go. But my job as an artist is to try to get it as close as I can to what I want and then let go, because it’s never going to be exactly the way I want.”

Having reached Broadway more than a decade after his airborne flash of inspiration, could Adjmi finally be satisfied?

“I definitely appreciate what’s happening right now, and I feel awestruck by the whole thing,” he says. “But I am not somebody who is ever going to be happy with anything I do. I am relentless with myself, and I have to be that way.”

He takes a breath. “At the same time, I know I will never achieve perfection. It doesn’t exist.”

Five Touchstones for ‘Stereophonic’

Metallica: Adjmi watched thousands of hours of documentary footage while writing “Stereophonic” and was fascinated by 2004’s “Metallica: Some Kind of Monster,” which follows the band as the musicians work out their issues with a group therapist. So much so that he even borrowed a couple lines of dialogue for “Stereophonic.”

The Beatles: Butler cites the Beatles as foundational for both his own music and his “Stereophonic” soundtrack, while Adjmi pored over diary entries and studio notes from producer George Martin to get into the nitty-gritty of recording an album. Though the play’s setting and conversational patter evoke “The Beatles: Get Back,” Adjmi says he avoided watching Peter Jackson’s 2021 documentary: “People kept saying, ‘It’s just like your play!’ and I was like, ‘I don’t want to watch it because I’m going to have an anxiety attack because my play is probably never going to happen because of this pandemic!’”

Robert Altman and Maurice Pialat : Two filmmakers inspired Aukin’s approach to “Stereophonic.” “It’s like if you took a Robert Altman movie and transcribed the text, including where and how people overlap speaking,” he says, referring to Altman’s 1975 musical dramedy “Nashville.” Of French director Pialat, Aukin says, “There is something so bracingly present and raw about a number of his films. He works a lot with actors and nonactors, often in the same scene, and achieves a really rare and unusual quality.”

“Sound City”: David Zinn didn’t know squat about sound when he was tasked with building a set designed around a mixing console. So he turned to Dave Grohl’s 2013 film “Sound City,” a history of the famed recording studio in Van Nuys. “Dave Grohl made this great documentary about the Neve board he bought,” Zinn says. “And I just studied that.” Next he had to convince someone to loan the production a “$500,000 piece of equipment to sit onstage.”

Led Zeppelin Tribute – Letz Zep

Led zeppelin tribute – letz zep tour dates.

led zeppelin tour au

Described in Kerrang Magazine as ‘Better than a LED ZEPPELIN Re-union’ and Led Zeppelin’s record label Warner Music as ‘Europe’s Best Tribute to LED ZEPPELIN ’, LETZ ZEP have earned their international reputation as with World’s Best Tribute to the World’s Greatest Ever Rock Band, LED ZEPPELIN.

Celebrating the music of LED ZEPPELIN, the setlist includes Stairway to Heaven, Immigrant Song, Black Dog, Rock and Roll, Kashmir, Whole Lotta Love, Ramble On, Heartbreaker, Good Times Bad Times, Dazed and Confused + Loads More!

Both Jimmy Page and Robert Plant have attended LETZ ZEP shows. They were so impressed by LETZ ZEP, they invited them to perform at the official launch party of LED ZEPPELIN’s ‘Mothership’.

LETZ ZEP possess the considerable musical ability required to produce a completely convincing recreation of LED ZEPPELIN in their prime, complete with the “tight but loose” raw excitement that was the trademark of a Led Zeppelin concert… “If you close your eyes, you would think it was Led Zep themselves”!

Letz Zep Press Release

Question: How do you pay tribute and do justice to one of the greatest rock and roll bands on the planet and cram over 7 hours worth of incredible material into just one live show?

Answer: Letz Zep – One of the best internationally credited Led Zeppelin tribute bands which have more than 30 festivals behind them and have had the privilege of sharing the stage with artists of the stature of OZZY OSBOURNE, Dr. Feelgood, Saxon and Uriah Heep.

Members Billy Kulke (vocals), Andy Gray (guitars), Shaun Herd (bass, keyboards & mandolin) and Simon Jeffrey (drums) take fans on a 2-hour journey that has been praised as ‘like listening to the true Led Zeppelin ’ (Amsterdam Melkwig).

Since their inception in 2014, Letz Zep have mastered the Led Zeppelin experience, performing a hit laden show featuring all the much loved classics such as ‘Stairway to Heaven,’ ‘Immigrant Song’, ‘Dazed and Confused’, ‘Rock and Roll’, ‘Kashmir’, ‘Whole Lotta Love’ ‘Heartbreaker’, ‘Black Dog’ and many, many more.

Billy Kulke (the uncanny Jimmy Page look-a-like), says Letz Zep originally began as a hobby but the band loved playing the Led Zeppelin catalogue so much, they began to take it seriously.

“We did it for our own entertainment because we thought it would be fun,” Kulke admits. “But we kept on getting more and more people to shows.”

It wasn’t until Robert Plant saw the band live that things really started taking off for the act.

“When I was growing up, people always said I look like Robert Plant ,” confesses Kulke. “I thought, yeah, there is a slight resemblance, he does look a bit like me,” he laughs.

Plant’s reaction to seeing Letz Zep live was, “I walked in and saw me.”

Jimmy Page  has also attended a gig by Letz Zep when he invited he band to join him after the show. He complimented the band on the performance.

”That was ambitious, but you pulled it off”, said Jimmy about the set Letz Zep performed in his presence. ”I’ve been hearing a lot of good things about your band, we have a lot of mutual friends so stay in touch” Jimmy continued, ”You have captured the spirit of Led Zeppelin concerts, you really are very, very good.”

Since then the tribute band have played shows in France, Spain, Portugal, Germany, Russia, Poland. Italy, Belgium, Holland, Andorra, Malta, Greece, Switzerland, Luxembourg, Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Slovenia, Hungary, Latvia, Croatia, Serbia, Brazil, Mexico, Venezuela, Uruguay, Australia, New Zealand, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Haiti, India, the list goes on…. and on! Taking in over 40 countries on SIX continents.

Led Zeppelin have such a vast back catalogue of songs and albums that the hardest part of any Letz Zep show is deciding the set list.

Kulke confesses that Letz Zep change the running order of songs for each tour, depending on where they are playing. If it’s a country they’ve not performed before, it tends to be a more hit-laden set and when they return later, they tend to perform the more lesser-known tracks. “Songs that people don’t expect, but equally love,” says Kulke.

A Letz Zep show is designed to take the fan on a sonic journey. For Kulke, the acoustic part of the show is a personal highlight.

“It kinda shows that it’s not all power and bombast. You can sit there and you can entertain 2000 people sitting on a stool just singing gently. I think that’s important.”

Led Zeppelin are one of the best-selling music artists of all time; their total record sales are estimated to be between 200 to 300 million units worldwide. They achieved eight consecutive UK number-one albums and six number-one albums on the US Billboard 200, with five of their albums certified Diamond in the US. Rolling Stone magazine described them as “the heaviest band of all time”, “the biggest band of the Seventies”, and “unquestionably one of the most enduring bands in rock history”. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1995; the museum’s biography of the band states that they were “as influential” during the 1970s as the Beatles were during the 1960s.

For Letz Zep , the members are under no illusions of the legacy of their heroes but also aim to bring the best to audiences each night.

All four members possess the considerable musical ability required to a completely convincing recreation of Led Zeppelin in their prime, complete with the ‘tight but loose’ trademark element so essential to the raw excitement of a Led Zeppelin concert

“The reaction from the people in the crowd is amazing,” admits Kulke. “Especially when we perform ‘Stairway to Heaven’, you see grown men crying. They thought they’d never hear songs like this live and it really means a lot to people and that’s where I get my pleasure from.”

Led Zeppelin

Led Zeppelin , often hailed as the epitome of rock ‘n roll greatness, had its origins back in 1966 when Jimmy Page , a London-based session guitarist, took over as the bassist for The Yardbirds, replacing Paul Samwell-Smith. Notably, The Yardbirds also featured guitar legend Jeff Beck. By 1968, The Yardbirds were on the verge of disbanding, and Page and Beck aimed to create a new supergroup, initially considering adding The Who’s rhythm section with Keith Moon and John Entwistle. Though this plan never materialized, Beck, Page, and Moon did collaborate on a single track named “Beck’s Bolero,” featuring future Led Zeppelin bassist, John Paul Jones .

After The Yardbirds broke up following a gig in Bedfordshire, the band still had commitments for several Scandinavian performances. Jimmy Page and Yardbirds bassist Chris Dreja agreed to finish the tour under the moniker “The New Yardbirds.” Page initially attempted to recruit lead singer Terry Reid, who declined but recommended Robert Plant , the singer for the Band of Joy. Plant accepted the offer and brought Band of Joy’s drummer, John Bonham . When Chris Dreja withdrew from the tour, Jimmy Page brought in John Paul Jones .

The New Yardbirds, now comprising Jimmy Page , Robert Plant , John Bonham , and John Paul Jones , held their first jam session in a London record store’s basement. Their debut collaboration was a rendition of the blues track “Train Kept A-Rollin’,” famously performed by Johnny Burnette. Before embarking on the Scandinavian tour, the group also participated in a recording session for P.J. Proby’s album “Three Week Hero,” during which they recorded a track titled “Jim’s Blues.” This was the first studio recording to feature all four members of the future Led Zeppelin, with Plant playing harmonica instead of singing.

Following the Scandinavian tour, The New Yardbirds began working on their debut album. However, the band received a cease and desist letter from the original Yardbirds bassist, Chris Dreja, stating that “The New Yardbirds” name was only approved for the remaining Yardbirds tour dates. The origin of the name Led Zeppelin remains somewhat unclear, but it’s rumored to date back to the initial Page, Beck, Moon, and Entwistle project, where someone suggested that the project would fail like a lead balloon. The “A” in “Lead” was dropped at the suggestion of manager Peter Grant to avoid mispronunciation as “leed,” and “balloon” was replaced with “Zeppelin,” a more robust term for airships that had been used before World War II.

As the legend goes, Led Zeppelin signed with Atlantic in what was reported as the most significant debut recording deal for a new band at the time. This deal granted the band complete creative and business autonomy, leading them to form the company Superhype to manage publishing rights. The Superhype name appeared on the initial pressing of the first Led Zeppelin album but was later replaced by Warner Brothers on subsequent releases. “Superhype” wouldn’t reappear on a Led Zeppelin release until their untitled fourth album three years later.

Though their first UK tour was still billed as “The New Yardbirds,” Led Zeppelin performed their first show under that name on October 25th at the University of Surrey in Battersea. Their eponymous debut album was released in the US in January 1969, peaking at number 10 on the Billboard Chart. It was released in the UK in March, where it peaked at number 6. According to Stephen Erlewine at allmusic.com, Led Zeppelin ‘s debut album took “… the heavy distorted electric blues of Jimi Hendrix, Jeff Beck, and Cream to an extreme,” creating “a majestic, powerful brand of guitar rock constructed around simple, memorable riffs and lumbering rhythms.” Even today, Led Zeppelin ‘s debut album is considered a rock ‘n roll landmark and an early influence on the burgeoning heavy metal genre.

In their first year as Led Zeppelin , the band toured extensively in both the USA and the UK before releasing their second album, Led Zeppelin II. Recorded while on tour in America at various studios, the album reached number one on the charts in both the UK and the USA. Heavier, bluesier, and more direct than their first record, Led Zeppelin II is still seen as a quintessential rock album and one of the greatest of all time.

The opening track of Led Zeppelin II , “Whole Lotta Love,” would become one of Led Zeppelin ‘s signature songs and was performed at every concert from June 1969 onward. It was even re-recorded by The Collective Consciousness Society, becoming the theme song for the BBC TV show Top of the Pops, ensuring its recognition among music fans in Britain.

The song “ Heartbreaker ” from Led Zeppelin II proved to be highly influential. Eddie Van Halen credits it as the inspiration behind his “tapping technique,” which inspired countless guitarists. Guitar icon Steve Vai describes it as “defiant, bold, and edgier than hell” and calls it “the definitive rock guitar solo.” Even Nirvana covered the song at their first-ever show in March 1987.

In 1970, Page and Plant secluded themselves in a remote cottage in Wales to write their third album, Led Zeppelin III . What emerged from these sessions was far from what anyone might have expected. Influenced by folk and Celtic music, “ Led Zeppelin III ” surprised fans, divided critics, yet still achieved chart-topping success on both sides of the Atlantic.

The opening song of Led Zeppelin III , “ Immigrant Song ,” became one of the band’s most popular tracks. Inspired by Viking invasions of England, the song was released as a single in the US and became a top 20 hit. Lester Bangs described it in Rolling Stone as having “bulldozer rhythms” and praised Plant’s “double-tracked wordless vocal crossings echoing behind the main vocal like some cannibal chorus wailing in the infernal light of a savage fertility rite.” The song became well known in Japan as the entrance theme music for legendary pro-wrestler Bruiser Brody.

As Led Zeppelin continued to ascend in global popularity, their shows grew more extravagant. The band members adopted flamboyant clothing, incorporated complex light shows with mirror balls and lasers into their stage performances. The band began travelling in their own private jet, nicknamed “The Starship.” Tales of extravagant and raucous behaviour began to circulate, with stories of entire hotel floors being rented for private parties and wild exploits. One such story involved Jon Bonham riding a motorcycle through a rented floor of The Continental Hyatt House Hotel in Los Angeles.

In 1971, Led Zeppelin released their fourth album, deviating from their numeric tradition. The album was released untitled and is now commonly referred to as Led Zeppelin IV or Untitled IV, due to the four symbols featured on the record sleeve, often called “Zoso” or “Four Symbols.” Each of the four symbols is said to represent a member of the band.

Led Zeppelin IV would become the band’s best-selling record, with over 37 million copies sold worldwide, solidifying its place among the best-selling records of all time. As of 2006, the album had sold 23 million copies in the United States alone. The album includes the infamous “ Stairway to Heaven “, which, although never released as a single, became the most requested and played song on American radio in the 1970s.” Stairway to Heaven ” was voted number three by VH1 on its list of the 100 Greatest Rock Songs in 2000. In 2004, it ranked 31st on Rolling Stone’s list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.

Although somewhat overshadowed by the anthem status of “ Stairway to Heaven “, Led Zeppelin IV also featured Led Zeppelin ‘s signature songs like “ Black Dog “, a top 10 single in Australia, and “ Rock ‘n Roll “, which featured The Rolling Stones’ pianist, Ian Stewart. In 1972, rock critic Robert Christgau described “ Rock ‘n Roll ” as “simply the most dynamic hard-rock song.” From 1972 to 1975, “ Rock ‘n Roll ” opened every Led Zeppelin concert, and for their final tour, it served as an encore. It was also the last song Led Zeppelin played at their reunion show at the O2 Arena in London in 2007.

Led Zeppelin ‘s fifth album, Houses of the Holy , broke with the numbering convention and was released in March 1973. The album featured a controversial cover designed by the graphic design group Hipgnosis. The record demonstrated greater musical experimentation, incorporating mellotron, orchestration, and synthesizers. Houses of the Holy included signature Led Zeppelin songs like “ The Song Remains the Same ” and “ No Quarter “. From 1973 onward, “No Quarter” became a centrepiece of every Zeppelin concert, played at nearly every show until their final tour. The album’s North American tour shattered attendance records, many of which had been previously set by The Beatles. The band’s performances at Madison Square Garden were filmed for the 1976 movie “ The Song Remains The Same “.

After the successful Houses of the Holy tour, Led Zeppelin established their own record label in 1974, Swan Song, named after an unreleased song. The label’s logo, a mythical winged human figure often interpreted as either Apollo or Icarus, became synonymous with the group and has appeared on merchandise for decades.

In 1975, the band released their double album, Physical Graffiti . Like their previous albums, it achieved commercial success but as a result of it’s popularity, all preceding L ed Zeppelin recordings re-entered the Billboard 200 charts. In May 1975, Led Zeppelin performed five sold-out nights at Earls Court Arena in London, which was the largest arena in Britain at the time. “ Physical Graffiti ” featured the epic “ Kashmir ”. John Paul Jones believed the song showcased all the elements of Led Zeppelin’s sound. Led Zeppelin archivist Dave Lewis regarded it as “arguably the most progressive and original track that Led Zeppelin ever recorded.”

Led Zeppelin ‘s seventh album, Presence , marked a turbulent period for the band and could be seen as the beginning of the end. Prior to recording, Robert Plant was involved in a serious car accident, causing the band to cancel all touring commitments for the release. Consequently, the ten-minute opening track “ Achilles Last Stand ” was one of the few songs from the album performed live. Although the album achieved platinum status, it received mixed reviews from fans and critics and was somewhat overshadowed by the release of the film “ The Song Remains the Same ” and its soundtrack. It began to appear that the band’s excesses were catching up with them.

In 1977, Led Zeppelin embarked on their first tour in several years. Although it initially set new attendance records, the tour was marked by a series of offstage issues and incidents, culminating tragically with Plant receiving news that his five-year-old son had passed away from a stomach virus. The remainder of the tour was cancelled and Led Zeppelin ‘s final U.S. performance took place on July 24th at the Oakland Coliseum in California.

In 1978, Led Zeppelin regrouped in Stockholm, Sweden, to record what would become their final album as an active band, In Through the Out Door . The album largely reflected the turmoil within the band, as Robert Plant was still grieving his son’s death, Jimmy Page was battling heroin addiction, and Jon Bonham was struggling with alcoholism that would eventually claim his life two years later. In the midst of this chaos, the band grew weary of the music industry’s demands. In Through The Out Door divided critics, with some appreciating its forward-thinking synthesizer influences, while others saw it as out of touch with the punk movement in England. Despite mixed responses, Led Zeppelin headlined two performances at the Knebworth Music Festival in August 1979, playing to over 104,000 people on the first night.

In 1980, a show in Nuremberg, Germany, came to an abrupt end after three songs when Jon Bonham collapsed on stage. The collapse was attributed to drug and alcohol abuse, although the band claimed he had simply overeaten. On September 25th, Jon Bonham passed away during rehearsals for an upcoming U.S. tour. The subsequent inquest revealed that he had consumed around 40 shots of vodka, leading to vomiting and choking.

On December 4th, 1980, a statement to the press declared, “We wish it to be known that the loss of our dear friend, and the deep sense of undivided harmony felt by ourselves and our manager, have led us to decide that we could not continue as we were.” Thus, officially marking the end of the career of one of the world’s greatest rock and roll bands.

Led Zeppelin blazed a trail for hard rock and heavy metal, and their influence continues to resonate decades after they disbanded.

JASON BONHAM Says 'It Was Quite Emotional' Performing LED ZEPPELIN Music At Madison Square Garden

In a new interview with Brian Casey of the 93.5 Max radio station, drummer Jason Bonham — son of the legendary John Bonham — spoke about his LED ZEPPELIN EVENING show, which he is once again taking on tour across North America this spring. He said (as transcribed by BLABBERMOUTH.NET ): "One of the reasons why we're still doing this 14 years in is the fact that I took something that was purely kind of therapeutic, just a way to play the music, didn't really think of it as something that we'd be carrying on doing much past the first time we did it, and then the second time, and the next thing you know, here we are, 14 years later, which blows my mind. You'd think we'd have learned the songs by now. So, it's one of those things, it's naturally grown. And to the point of, to get invitations to go and play with other artists… I never imagined us going out, and one of the highlights for me was to play with Peter Frampton , and we opened up for Frampton at Madison Square Garden. To go on stage and be playing LED ZEPPELIN music back in 2019, it was quite emotional. To think of this was where the ZEPPELIN concert 'The Song Remains The Same' , everything was filmed there, Madison Square Garden. And the love, and to walk out at 7 o'clock — you know, most of the time, you don't go and see the opening act, but to walk out and see a house full was this huge respect that they have for the music of my father and LED ZEPPELIN . I'm still overwhelmed and just humbled that the fact that when we go out, like we're just about to go and do some shows with Billy Joel , we're doing some [shows] with HEART again, and we're going to do some shows with DEF LEPPARD , to get these phone calls, it's just amazing to be thought of, to come and bring my, what started off as a little bit of fun. So, yeah, we are still enjoying it."

Bonham also talked about the fact that JASON BONHAM'S LED ZEPPELIN EVENING makes it a point to reproduce the music faithfully. "We had an insurgence of… one is a guitar player called Mr. Jimmy [Japanese musician Akio Sakurai ] that came to the band in 2017. And his knowledge and his tone and the whole thing has really made all of us, like, we have to suddenly… He knew way more than me. It was great for us. It was a time that we needed to, if we were gonna continue on, he came in and just brought the joy back. It's been a wonder. His ability to take you to those places where, as I said, the guitar, the way Jimmy Page used to play it, it was like he'd make it sound — and it wasn't easy to do that. It was a struggle, and it was a conversation you had with the guitar that was making it do it, and the guitar would fight back. And that's the thing — you get players that can play all those runs, they make it sound too easy. That's not what Jimmy and LED ZEPPELIN were about. It's the feel. So, yeah, to find somebody that studied Jimmy , and only studied them like the Japanese can — they studied their subjects and their masters — and they go, 'This is what they do.' And it's a wonder to watch him do that."

Jason Bonham spent nearly a decade touring as JASON BONHAM'S LED ZEPPELIN EXPERIENCE before changing the band's name to JASON BONHAM'S LED ZEPPELIN EVENING . Bonham later explained that the switch was prompted by a request from the LED ZEPPELIN camp, who wanted to use the "Experience" name for a project involving the archive of ZEP live recordings.

JASON BONHAM'S LED ZEPPELIN EXPERIENCE was formed in 2009 to pay tribute to Bonham 's father, who died in 1980 at the age of 32. "It was meant to be part of my way of expressing my love for music and expressing myself with a tip of the hat to my father," Jason told Mixdown in a 2017 interview. "Soon after doing the 28 shows that we did with an orchestra, everyone said, 'You're not going to stop now, are you? You haven't been here, you haven't played there…' And so I said, 'As long as you guys want me to do it, I'll do it.' It's really fan-based. It's not us and them; it's about love for LED ZEPPELIN , and that's how it's grown, as a very honest, natural, fan-based show. You guys all knew him as Bonzo ; I knew him as dad, and there's a great interaction."

Jason launched JASON BONHAM'S LED ZEPPELIN EXPERIENCE two years after taking part in LED ZEPPELIN 's one-off performance at London's O2 Arena tribute concert for friend and Atlantic Records founder Ahmet Ertegun . The rare live set, which saw Jason behind the drums in place of his late father, was released in 2012 as "Celebration Day" .

He told the Chicago Tribune about JASON BONHAM'S LED ZEPPELIN EVENING : "We're not LED ZEPPELIN . We are fans. We love the music. We give it 150 percent energy and time to make it as good as we can make it to give people that feeling and make people go back to their youth.

"I never wanted it to be we are just playing music. It had to be personal with stories to tell people what Dad was like at home. It's nice to know that so many people love hearing that music played in a live environment."

The performance includes LED ZEPPELIN favorites as well as deep cuts.

"The hardest thing is picking the songs," Bonham told the Chicago Tribune . " "There's more deeper songs — 'In The Light' , 'Friends' , 'Four Sticks' — songs that never got played live and never made it to a ZEPPELIN show. The list could go on for the more obscure ones that fans like to hear. Of course we still do 'Kashmir' , 'Stairway To Heaven' and 'What Is And What Should Never Be' . We started doing 'Dancing Days' , 'Houses Of The Holy' and 'That's The Way' . This show is one of the most fun things to do because I get to play all this great music in front of people that really appreciate it."

The most valuable vinyls ever revealed – could your collection be worth £10,000?

The Beatles vinyl for Please Please Me

We’ve all heard about innocent-looking Harry Potter books paying off mortgages – but have you ever considered the treasures that could be hiding in your record collection ?

If your wedge of vinyls has been handed down and spans back to the 60s and 70s, you may just own a £10,000 cultural relic. Or perhaps there’s one sitting in your local charity shop with a £5 price tag.

If you are lucky enough to own the UK’s most valuable vinyls then call your mother – you just won £67,000.

As today is April 20 – Record Store Day, don’t you know? – why not have a flick through those old boxes and find out if you’ve got one of the following treasures.

From the likes of The Beatles to Led Zeppelin , the company A2D2 – which connects analogue music devices to smart speaker sound systems – has researched the UK’s most valuable records, and here are the results.

The UK’s most valuable vinyl records revealed

The beatles – the white album.

The White Album is the colloquial name for the band’s ninth studio album, officially called The Beatles.

But because of its blank white exterior, the album – which simply has The Beatles written on its cover – is now known better by its pretty self-explanatory nickname.

The Beatles self-titled 1968 vinyl double-LP, better known as the White Album

The 1968 album contains some of The Beatles’ most beloved tracks including Blackbird, Back In The U.S.S.R. and Helter Skelter. It’s also the only double Beatles album from legends George Harrison, Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr and John Lennon.

Original copies – especially those with low serial numbers, in pristine condition and with the original Apple logo – can be worth a fortune, potentially fetching up to £10,000.

Complex – Complex

Complex’s self-titled rock album – with an iconic skeletal tree on a burnt orange background – was only pressed 99 times, and is one of the most sought-after psychedelic albums of all time.

Recorded in 1970, Complex’s album includes songs Funny Feeling, Green Eyed Lucy, Witch’s Spell, and Norwegian Butterfly.

An immaculate copy was picked up for £1 and later sold for a whopping £10,000. So it’s worth checking…

Dark – Round the Edges

With only 40 copies ever pressed, Dark’s Round The Edges – their debut album – is a real prize.

With tracks including Darkside, Maypole, The Cat, and Zero Time, this psychedelic 1972 rock album in its original form is considered to be the holy grail of record collections.

One of these rare copies could be worth up to £8,350.

Led Zeppelin – Led Zeppelin

Of vocalist Robert Plant, guitarist Jimmy Page, bassist and keyboardist John Paul Jones, and drummer John Bonham’s many brilliant creations, among record collectors their self-titled debut studio album is of biggest value.

The 1969 album – which includes Dazed and Confused, I Can’t Quit You Baby, Good Times Bad Times, and Black Mountain Side – was recorded at Olympic Studios in London shortly after the band formed.

With its turquoise typography and a unique Superhype credit, one of the first pressings of Led Zeppelin’s debut album was sold for £7,100 in 2013.

A Fleeting Glance – A Fleeting Glance

Another psychedelic rock album on the list is A Fleeting Glance – a record put together by a variety of mysterious musicians at a social club. It allegedly includes an uncredited appearance by Billy Fury.

Only five copies of this curious album are known to exist, and so if another is found it could be worth up to £6,400.

The Beatles – Please Please Me

The Beatles’ debut album, Please Please Me, was first released on March 22 1963 with bangers including Love Me Do, Twist and Shout, and Please Please Me, and – naturally – it’s worth a lot of money.

The early UK Parlophone pressings with the black and gold label are highly sought after, worth up to £6,000.

Beatles vinyl record which was found in a Cancer Research UK charity shop in Enfield, north London, and has been auctioned for more than £4,200.

John Lennon once revealed the band recorded their first album in one long twelve hour session.

‘The last song to be done was a song called Twist and Shout, which nearly killed me,’ he said.

Sir Paul McCartney also recalled how Lennon had to save Twist and Shout until last to preserve his throat.

‘John was sucking zoobs all day – those little throat tablets. And he finally had to do Twist and Shout knowing he had to do it last because it would just rip his throat apart to do it,’ he said.

‘It was great. You can still hear that on the record.’

Sex Pistols – God Save the Queen

The Sex Pistols’ God Save The Queen boasts one of the most recognisable record covers in British history, as the band name and record title over Queen Elizabeth II’s eyes and mouth proved wildly controversial at the time.

Released in May 1997 in the midst of Queen Elizabeth II’s Silver Jubilee – the band denied this timing was intentional – the song went on to cause uproar.

God Save The Queen by Sex Pistols vinyl

Written in Johnny Rotten’s London squat, the record was banned by the BBC who described it as an example of ‘gross bad taste’. It was also banned by the Independent Broadcasting Authority, which regulated Independent Local Radio.

Amid the furore, band members Paul Cook and Johnny Rotten were also physically assaulted by offended monarchists with razors and iron bars.

Nowadays, a first pressing on the A&M label, which was quickly withdrawn, can command a price of up to £6,000.

Joy Division – An Ideal For Living

An Ideal for Living is the first EP by post-punk band Joy Division, released on June 23, 1978, not long after they changed their name from Warsaw.

They released the EP under their own label, Enigma, before later signing to Tony Wilson and Martin Hannett’s Factory Records.

The EP was recorded at Pennine Sound Studios in Oldham and includes four tracks: Warsaw, No Love Lost, Leaders of Men and Failures.

The record was largely self-financed on a budget of just £400, and only 1,000 copies were pressed. Every record is said to have been individually folded by the bandmates.

Joy Division's Ian Curtis performing live onstage at the Lantaren

An Ideal For Living also caused controversy with its cover, showing a member of the Hitler Youth.

Later that year, the EP was re-pressed as a 12″. Only genuine original pressings have an anti-slip ring on the centre label of the 7″ – and they are all black vinyl.

If you’ve got one of these in good condition, you could be £4,700 richer.

NEW YORK (AP) — Heart — the pioneering band that melds Nancy Wilson’s shredding guitar with her sister Ann’s powerhouse vocals — is hitting the road this spring and fall for a world tour that Nancy Wilson describes as “the full-on rocker size.”

“I’ve been strengthening. I’ve got my trainer,” she says. “You go one day at a time and you strengthen one workout session at a time. It’s a lot of work, but it’s the only job I know how to do.”

The Rock & Roll Hall of Famers who gave us classic tracks like “Magic Man,” “Crazy on You” and “Alone” will be playing all the hits, some tracks from of their solo albums — like Ann Wilson’s “Miss One and Only” and Nancy Wilson’s “Love Mistake” — and a new song called “Roll the Dice.”

“I like to say we have really good problems because the problem we have is to choose between a bunch of different, really cool songs that people love already,” says Nancy Wilson.

Like “Barracuda,” a sonic burst which first appeared on the band’s second album, “Little Queen” and is one of the band’s most memorable songs.

“You can’t mess with ‘Barracuda.’ It’s just the way it is. It is great. You get on the horse and you ride. It’s a galloping steed of a ride to go on. And for everybody, including the band.”

The tour kicks off Saturday at the Bon Secours Wellness Arena in Greenville, South Carolina, and will hit cities including Atlanta, Boston, Baltimore, Pittsburgh, Milwaukee, Cleveland, Detroit, as well as the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival and Red Rocks Amphitheater in Morrison, Colorado. International dates include stops in London, Oslo, Berlin, Stockholm, Montreal and Glasgow.

The band’s Royal Flush Tour will have Cheap Trick as the opening act for many stops, but Def Leppard and Journey will join for three stadium dates in Cleveland, Toronto and Boston this summer.

Ann and Nancy Wilson will be filled out by Ryan Wariner (lead and rhythm guitar), Ryan Waters (guitars), Paul Moak (guitars, keyboards and backing vocals), Tony Lucido (bass and backing vocals) and Sean T. Lane (drums).

The tour is the first in several years for Heart, which was rocked by a body blow in 2016 when Ann Wilson’s husband was arrested for assaulting Nancy’s 16-year-old twin sons. Nancy Wilson says that’s all in the past.

“We can take any kind of turbulence, me and Ann, and we’ve always been OK together,” she says. “We’re still steering the ship and happy to do it together. So we’re tight.”

The new tour will take them to Canada, which was warm to the band when they were starting out as what Nancy Wilson calls “a couple of chicks from Seattle.” She recalls Vancouver embracing Heart, and touring in one van across Canada in the dead of winter on two lane highways.

The Wilson sisters broke rock’s glass ceiling in the ‘70s and Nancy Wilson says they only had male influences to look to, like Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, the Beatles, the Rolling Stones and the Moody Blues.

Now she says she looks out and loves seeing generations of female rockers. “You have boygenius and you have Billie Eilish and you have Olivia Rodrigo and so many amazing women — Maggie Rogers and Sheryl Crow, who calls us her big influence. And then Billie Eilish might have Sheryl Crow as her influence. So it’s a really nice legacy to pass along. I like to say we’re the OG — the original gangsters — of women and rock.”

Heart has made it into the Rock Hall, won Grammys, sold millions of albums and rocked hundreds of thousands of fans but Nancy Wilson has one place she’d still like to shine.

Next year will mark the 50th anniversary of their debut album, “Dreamboat Annie,” which was the same year that “Saturday Night Live” started. “So we’re actually kind of putting it out there — Heart never played on ‘Saturday Night Live.’ But what about the 50th birthday party with Heart?”
