Hence, they won’t mind if you join them.

Before delving into a detailed itinerary, we have attempted to answer a couple of common questions that people have asked us numerous times while while planning their Leh Ladakh bike trip.

Quick overview

How Long is the Leh Ladakh Bike Trip?

Leh Ladakh Bike Trip

The most popular and endearing Leh Ladakh bike trip is about 15 days long and it covers all the important stops around Leh. This trip generally starts from Jammu/Srinagar and ends in Manali. There also people who choose to fly directly into Leh and just see the important locations around Leh. Such a trip can be completed in 5 to 6 days. We’ve explained how you can easily convert this 14 day itinerary to a 5 Day Leh Ladakh itinerary below.

Leh Ladakh Bike Trip Best Time

The best time for a Leh Ladakh Bike trip is from May end to September when the temperatures are bearable and the mountain passes have opened . After September, the mountain roads generally close due to extreme temperatures and landslides. Before April, due to harsh winter conditions and unpredictable rainfall, it becomes a little risky to conduct a Ladakh bike trip.

Leh Ladakh Bike Trip Cost

Leh Ladakh Bike Trip Highway

An average Leh Ladakh bike trip cost for 15 days is somewhere around Rs. 27,000 to Rs. 30,000 per person if you’re taking your own private vehicle. This cost includes food, accommodation in guest houses or camps and fuel.

Camps and homestays generally have options that include breakfast and dinner and the cost is very reasonable. While riding, there are numerous shacks/dhabas where you can have a good meal for as low as Rs. 100. These include breakfast options like parathas, omelets, sandwiches, butter toasts and coffee while lunch options include Tibetan delicacies like thukpas, momos, chowmein and local North Indian delicacies. If you opt for Non-vegetarian food, it’ll cost youa little more.

If you’re renting a bike for the entire trip, this cost will rise to Rs. 55,000 to Rs. 60,000 per person. The bike rent and fuel cost shall be divided into two in case you’re taking this Leh – Ladakh bike trip with a pillion rider.

Your total cost also depends on the type of bike that you’re renting. The following are the latest bike rental rates in Ladakh for the most popular brands:

  • Royal Enfield Classic 500 CC – Rs. 2,000/day
  • Royal Enfield Himalayan – Rs. 2,500/day
  • BMW/GSR 310 CC – Rs. 3,500/day
  • Bajaj Avenger 220 CC- Rs. 1,500/day
  • Scooty (Activa/Access) – Rs. 1,100/day

An additional Rs. 150/day is charged for Ladakh carrier and saddle bag .

Leh Ladakh Packing List

Leh Ladakh Bike Trip Packing list

Despite recent developments, Ladakh is still quite a remote location. Basic utilities might be readily available in the town of Leh, but in more remote areas, they are quite scarce. So, it’s better to pack them in advance to avoid shortage or paying premium prices for the same.

Also, you shall also need to pack weather sensitive clothing like rain covers, thermal wear, safety gear for riding a bike in Ladakh and some common spare parts for your bike . In addition to this, it’s necessary to carry medication for basic ailments as you don’t know when you might need them. Pack a go-to medication kit along with your bike’s first aid kit to take care of this.

To guide you better for your Ladakh trip, we have created this detailed Leh Ladakh Packing List that you absolutely should follow. We recommend referring this list to ensure that you are prepared for all contingencies during your Leh Ladakh Bike Trip .

Leh Ladakh Bike Trip Route

Leh Ladakh Bike Trip Route

The best and the most convenient route for your Leh Ladakh bike trip starts from Jammu/Srinagar and ends in Manali. For a classic Leh Ladakh Itinerary travel in a clockwise direction starting from Jammu and take stops at the following hubs :

  • Nubra Valley

For visiting Nubra Valley and Pangong Lake, you shall need to come back to Leh to resume your journey as there are no proper roads connecting these locations . There is a new direct route that connects Nubra Valley to Pangong lake via Shyok Village and Wari La. Despite the development of this route, it’s a little riskier to travel by bike . Hence, we recommend that you go back Leh and leave for Pangong Tso the next day.

This Leh Ladakh bike trip route is planned in such a way that it takes care of acclimatization and comfort for beginners as well as advanced riders. The important thing is, that you start from Srinagar or Jammu side .

Why it’s better to start your Ladakh Bike Trip from Jammu?

Leh Ladakh Bike Trip Road

We have visited Leh twice. Once from Jammu side and once from Manali side and we recommend choosing the former route . The following are the main reasons for starting your Ladakh bike trip from Jammu side:

  • If you’re taking your own bike to Ladakh, the best, most convenient and cheapest way to transport it is by train . Indian Railways does a fabulous job of packing and transporting your bike to Jammu (the most well-connected station near Ladakh). A lot of trains from all over India reach Jammu and your Bike will reach there in great condition without any hassle .
  • Jammu is a great hub for bikers riding towards Kashmir, Ladakh and the rest of Himalayas. Hence, with an abundance of mechanic shops, it’s easier to get a couple of modifications done to your bike in Jammu before you start your Leh Ladakh bike trip . We’re talking about adding saddle bags or fitting a luggage rack on your bike or evening getting your bike serviced and ready for exploring Ladakh!
  • However, the most important reason for starting your Leh Ladakh trip from Jammu/Srinagar, is that the ascend to Ladakh from Jammu is a lot easier compared to the one from Manali. The route from Manali side is a lot steeper and a lot of riders struggle with acclimatization. The steeper the ride, the lesser time the body gets to adjust to the change in climate. Acute mountain sickness or any other disease can absolutely ruin your trip.

Now that we have the answered some common questions about a Ladakh road trip, check out the following Leh Ladakh itinerary. We followed this itinerary and had the best time in Ladakh.

14 Day Leh Ladakh Bike Trip Itinerary

The crux of this Ladakh Bike trip itinerary is that you start your ride early in the morning . Through out the route, there’s a possibility of road blockage due to onrushing water due to the melting ice. The later you start, the higher your chances of encountering flooded roads and long traffic jams. Hence, we recommend waking up at 6 in the morning and starting your ride 7 AM. This also allows you to reach your destination earlier and enjoy it more during day time. Additionally, it allows you to take longer breaks at interesting locations enroute.

Leh Ladakh Itinerary Day 1: Arrival in Jammu and gearing up

Leh Ladakh Bike Trip gearing up

Your first day entails your arrival in Jammu and collecting your bike from the transporter (like the Indian Railways suggested above) in case you’re using your own vehicle for your Ladakh bike trip. If you’re hiring a bike, you’ll have to either hire it from a dealer who can collect the bike from Manali. If you don’t find such a dealer, you can ride back to Jammu (400 kms) instead of Chandigarh (300 kms) as proposed below .

After collecting your bike, get it checked thoroughly by the expert mechanics in the Jammu city center. You can make some modifications like a luggage brace or replace your break liners for better performance.

You can spend the rest of the day exploring Jammu. Popular places include the Amar Mahal Museum, Bagh-E-Bahu, the Bahu fort and Shree Ranbireshwar Temple.

Leh Ladakh Itinerary Day 2: Jammu To Srinagar

Distance: 250 kms

Duration: 8-9 hrs. considering usual conditions

Start early in the morning for Srinagar on NH 44. The road condition is great and you might find usual traffic of goods vehicles. Enjoy the first time joy of riding in the mountains here. NH 44 is the most well developed road in this entire Leh Ladakh bike trip.

Stop for Lunch at near Peerah village. Khajuriah Vaishno Dhaba in Peerah is arguably best place to have Rajma Chawal in the world . The perfectly cooked Rajma, rice, dollops of desi ghee and the lip-smacking anar-dana chutney make this the perfect spot for an early lunch.

Farther on the way, you shall cross Jawahar Tunnel, one of the oldest Himalayan tunnels in India . Moreover, at the time of its construction, it was one of the longest such tunnels in Asia!

You shall reach Srinagar by late afternoon. Check into your hotel/house boat and head over to Dal Lake for an evening walk on its beautiful boulevard. You can also opt for a Shikara ride in the lake.

Leh Ladakh Itinerary Day 3: Srinagar to Kargil via Sonamarg and Draas

Leh Ladakh Bike Trip Sonamarg

Distance: 205 kms

Duration: 7 – 8 hrs. considering usual conditions and traffic on Zoji La

You can start off early in the morning from Srinagar and head to the beautiful valley of Sonamarg. Sonamarg exemplifies why Kashmir is known as heaven on earth.

After a quick breakfast stop at Sonamarg, you shall head towards Kargil via Dras. The route that you shall be taking is the mighty Zoji La . Zoji La is one of the steepest and most under developed mountain passes of the Himalayas. It has been under redevelopment for quite some time. While one side is pretty well developed, the other side is quite a task. Ensure that you are with your group and be extra careful while driving here. The local drivers are quite rash and accidents are quite common.

After descending from Zoji La, you shall see a lot of small yurts selling delicious food cooked by locals. Have a hearty lunch here after an arduous bike ride on Zoji La.

Leh Ladakh Bike Trip Kargil War Memorial

Alternatively, you can take a lunch break in Dras, another quaint little town on the way to Kargil .

Overnight stay in Kargil.

Leh Ladakh Itinerary Day 4: Kargil to Leh

Distance: 220 kms

Leh Ladakh Bike Trip Lamaryu Moonland

The mountain pass that you shall be crossing on Day 4 of your Ladakh bike trip is known as Namika La. The road is very well developed by the Border Road Organization, fondly abbreviated BRO 😅.

After scaling Namik La, visit the famous Lamaryu monastery and its lunar landscapes that have earned it the name Lamaryu Moonland. The landscape formations due to lacustrine deposits in this region reminded us about our epic 4 days in Cappadocia, Turkey .

Your next photo stop shall be the popular Magnetic Hill . It’s a good place to take a break as there are a number of small yurts/shacks selling regional food.

You shall reach Leh by late afternoon or evening depending on the number of stops you’ve taken. You can stay in guesthouses or camps that include dinner . Hence, you don’t have to roam around for food after an entire day of riding.

Leh Ladakh Itinerary Day 5: Leh Local Sight Seeing and Permits

Leh Ladakh Bike Trip: The Most Practical Leh Ladakh Itinerary

Dedicate Day 5 of your Leh Ladakh itinerary to local sight seeing and getting the inner line permits for various mountain passes. You can get these permits online at the official website of Leh District Tourism .

💡 Pro Tip : It’s easier to print the permits at home and get them stamped at the Leh Tourist Information Centre or Leh DC office. You will not be able to find a lot of print shops or reliable internet in the mountains.

Local sight seeing in Leh involves the following must visit places:

  • The Khar – A structure that towers over the entire city of Leh. It houses the Leh Palace, the Tsemo Castle and the Namgyal Gompa.
  • Shanti Stupa –  A Buddhist white domed shaped Stupa located over the Chanspa hill.
  • Hall of Fame – A museum respecting the fallen heroes of the Kargil war and highlighting the hardships of the lives of the soldiers stationed at Siachin Glacier.
  • Leh Main Market – The central market of Leh where you can shop for local crafts like shawls, souvenir t shirts and enjoy a lunch at some cute cafes.

💡 Insider tip: We advise you to book your hotel/camp in such a way that you can keep your luggage in the Leh hotel when you make trips to Nubra Valley and Pangong lake. This way, you won’t have to mount, dismount, carry and unload all your heavy luggage at each destination. This way, you will have a room every time you return to Leh but will not be charged for the time you’re staying in Nubra Valley or Pangong Tso. A lot of hotels are accommodating this request.

Call in an early night as the next day, you shall be driving on one of the highest motorable roads on earth – Khardung La.

Leh Ladakh Itinerary Day 6: Leh To Nubra Valley

Distance: 130 km

Duration: 5-6 hrs. considering usual conditions and breaks

Leh Ladakh Bike Trip: The Most Practical Leh Ladakh Itinerary

On Day 6 of your Ladakh tour, you shall be scaling the mighty Khardung La – one of the highest motorable roads on earth located about 17,582 feet above sea level.

The road is reasonably well-developed. However, there can be traffic congestion due its recent popularity with tourists. Moreover, due to the melting ice in the summers, the pass can be flooded and also lead to breakdowns. Hence, we recommend starting your journey early in the morning. By doing so, you shall reach Khardung La top way before other tourists and might even get the entire place to yourself along with the Indian army personnel stationed there.

💡 Insider tip: The army serves a spiced herbal tea free of cost at the top. It’s a great way to warm yourself up in the cold and also indulge in some great conversation with the army personnel.

At the top, a lot of tourists and bike groups get pictures like the one above with the Khardung La top milestone. This picture is an amazing souvenir to get from your Leh Ladakh bike trip.

After reaching Nubra Valley, head over to the famous sand dunes of Hunder and get a picture with the Himalayan Bactrian Camels. These camels are unlike any that you might have seen. They are furry, sturdy and have two humps instead of a single one like regular camels.

Leh Ladakh Bike Trip: The Most Practical Leh Ladakh Itinerary

A lot of people opt to ride these camels. We request you not to do so as the it’s cruel and the camels hardly get any rest due to the onslaught of tourists. Instead, get a picture with them for a memorable, cruelty free souvenir from Ladakh.

Leh Ladakh Itinerary Day 7: Relax day at Turtuk Village

Distance: 85 kms

Leh Ladakh Bike Trip: The Most Practical Leh Ladakh Itinerary

Take a well deserved break from long bike rides in the beautiful Turtuk village in Nubra Valley. The village is located very close to the Line of Control (LOC) and is known as the gateway to the Siachin glacier .

You will have to park your bikes at the designated parking spots at the entrance of the village and continue on foot . The village is constructed like a beautiful maze set between cherry and mulberry orchards. You might even encounter a lot of cherry trees in the streets of Turtuk village.

Turtuk is a photographer’s dream. It is located in a beautiful valley surrounded by towering mountains. The landscape is green in contrast to the rest of Ladakh as it is irrigated by glacier water distributed in the village through canals constructed 200 years ago.

There are a number of small cute cafes serving piping hot food. Some of our favorite dishes in Turtuk were Spicy Chowmein, buckwheat pancakes with walnut puree, freshly squeezed mulberry or cherry juice and any local dish made from mulberry, cherry, walnut or apricot!

Moreover, you can also ask for a guided tour of the numerous walnut, cherry or apricot orchards and buy some fruits for home as well if you can accommodate them in your luggage.

Return back to Hunder at your camp/guest house. Overnight at Hunder.

Leh Ladakh Itinerary Day 8: Nubra Valley To Leh

Distance: 130 kms

Duration: 7-8 hrs. considering usual conditions and breaks

Leh Ladakh Bike Trip: The Most Practical Leh Ladakh Itinerary

Start your return towards Leh early in the morning as you shall be taking a pretty long stop at Diskit.

The Diskit Monastery houses the tallest Lord Buddha statue in India, that is visible even from its approach road . The statue stands an impressive 106 feet and is an amazing photo spot. Click some great pictures here and explore this 14 th century Diskit Monastery before heading back to Khardung La for your return leg to Leh.

Upon reaching Leh, rest and recover in the innumerable cafes or shop for souvenirs in Leh Main market. Overnight at Leh.

Leh Ladakh Itinerary Day 9: Leh to Pangong Lake

Distance: 223 kms

Duration: 5-6 hrs. considering usual conditions

Leh Ladakh Bike Trip: The Most Practical Leh Ladakh Itinerary

On day 10 of your Ladakh bike trip, start at 7 AM towards the Instafamous Pangong Tso via the mountain pass Chang La.

Pangong Tso or Pangong Lake is the pristine lake that features in the hit Bollywood movie, 3 Idiots . This is very evident as tourism and commercialization have set up many photo spots with “3 Idiots” references.

You shall be reaching the lake rather quickly as the road is quite well developed to boost tourism. Upon reaching the lake, find a spot that’s away from the scores of tourists. The lake is a tranquil paradise and its beauty is in its serenity. Don’t let the crowds take that away from you.

That being said, you still have to get those pictures with this piece of natural beauty. So, sit on some lonesome rock in the middle of the lake and ask one of your rider friends to start clicking. The rush of tourists increases with each passing hour. Hence, visit the lake as early as possible.

Leh Ladakh Bike Trip: The Most Practical Leh Ladakh Itinerary

Most tourists make a day trip to Pangong lake. However, we highly recommend staying a night in one of the camps along the shores of the lake. This not only gives you private access to the lake without the tourists but also provides you with an opportunity to witness one of the most magical sunrises (picture below) you will ever see.

Overnight in Spangmik.

Leh Ladakh Itinerary Day 10: Pangong Lake to Leh

Duration: 8 – 9 hrs. considering usual conditions and long stay at Thiksey Monastery

Leh Ladakh Bike Trip: The Most Practical Leh Ladakh Itinerary

Wake up early in the morning to witness a magical sunrise as pictured above. Relax at the camp by the calm waters of the lake.

Day 10 of your Leh-Ladakh trip entails your return to Leh from Pangong Lake and doesn’t involve any major sites or congested mountain passes . Hence, you can afford to start today’s ride a little late. After a hearty breakfast and a fun bonding session with your bike gang by the lake, start your return journey.

On the way back, pay your respects at the majestic Thiksey Monastery . This humongous temple complex houses the Maitreya (Future Buddha) standing tall at 15 meters, inside the temple complex. The monastery is known for its well-planned architecture, spectacular views and calm vibes.

You shall return to Leh by evening. Overnight in Leh.

Leh Ladakh Itinerary Day 11: Leh To Tso Moriri

Leh Ladakh Bike Trip: The Most Practical Leh Ladakh Itinerary

On Day 11 of your Ladakh bike tour, head to Tso Moriri – one of the highest mountain lakes in the world . The lake stretches out till about 28 kms and provides some of the most beautiful and serene views in the world.

You shall be passing the second highest motorable road in Ladakh, Taglang La. There is another less popular route as well, but if you’re a biker, you’d definitely not want to miss out on scaling Taglang La. It was my favorite mountain pass to cross in the entire duration of my Ladakh bike trip. It is very well developed, provides beautiful views of snow covered mountain peaks and the traffic is considerably manageable as well.

Post Taglang La, the route to Tso Moriri is a rather steep one. The road isn’t that developed, the incline is considerable high and you might have to go off road for longer durations. If you’re not an experienced biker or if you’re driving in the mountains for the first time, I would recommend you to skip Tso Moriri and head straight to Sarchu.

Leh Ladakh Itinerary Day 12: Tso Moriri to Sarchu

Distance: 230 kms

Duration: 9-10 hrs. considering usual conditions

Leh Ladakh Bike Trip: The Most Practical Leh Ladakh Itinerary

Start early in the morning from Tso Moriri so that you can reach your next stop, Sarchu before dark.

On the way, you shall be crossing More Plains . More plains are a rare flat land in the Himalayas where there are no ascents or descents on the road and you just keep driving on a flat road. The road is adorned with large stone hills on either side along with plain lands that create an ideal photo spot for you and your bike. Ever seen those Ladakhi pictures of a bike parked on the side of a long, never ending road with mountains on either side? Yes, that picture (like the one above) was taken on More plains. No other road in Ladakh provides the luxury of such an amazing picture.

After crossing More plains, you shall be driving on the main highway connecting Ladakh to Himachal Pradesh. So, expect a lot of truck traffic and be careful as a number of accidents have taken place on these roads.

Reach the tent city of Sarchu before nightfall. There is one main bridge that connects Sarchu to the main highway. If the bridge gets flooded, you might not be able to enter Sarchu.

There are a number of budget, mid-range and luxury camps in Sarchu for your night stay which also include dinner and breakfast in the room rate. Sarchu has been developed as a tent city as it falls at a convenient distance for bikers riding from Leh to Manali. So, finding food and accommodation shall not be a problem. However, advance booking is still recommended.

Overnight at Sarchu.

Leh Ladakh Itinerary Day 13: Sarchu To Manali

Leh Ladakh Bike Trip: The Most Practical Leh Ladakh Itinerary

Distance: 180 kms

Duration: 6 hrs. considering usual conditions and breaks

Start the 13th day of your Himalayan bike ride from Sarchu for Manali. The distance is quite short but traffic and fog can be deterrents to a short ride.

On the way, cover the pristine Suraj Tal and Deepak Tal lakes that are visible from the roadside itself.

Have lunch in Keylong, one of our favorite Himalayan towns that has great options for food with numerous cafes.

When we visited for the first time, we had to take the route through Rohtang Pass that added an additional 3 hours to our ride time due to the risky roads, traffic and the fog. However, after the construction of Atal Tunnel, the travel time and distance have greatly reduced. Take the Atal tunnel to save time or visit Rohtang if that’s on your bucket list.

After reaching Manali, visit the Hidamba temple or roam around on Mall road to explore Manali at your pace.

Overnight in Manali.

Leh Ladakh Itinerary Day 14: Manali To Chandigarh/Jammu/ Delhi

Leh Ladakh Bike Trip: The Most Practical Leh Ladakh Itinerary

This brings us to the 14 th day of your Leh Ladakh Bike trip. We have kept the option open for you to chose the destination as per your convenience.

You can opt to ride to Chandigarh (300 kms) like we did since it was the nearest, well connected hub for us to transport our bikes back to our home town.

You can head back to Jammu (400 kms), in case you have rented your bike from there and you need to return it back to Jammu.

If you’ve rented your motorcycle from a dealer who doesn’t mind collecting the bike from Manali, you can take an overnight sleeper bus to Delhi and return home.

15 Day Leh Ladakh Itinerary: Buffer Day/day exploring any of the locations in detail

Leh Ladakh Bike Trip: The Most Practical Leh Ladakh Itinerary

You can easily add another day to your 14-day Leh Ladakh bike trip by keeping a buffer day for unforeseen circumstances like landslides, road closures, harsh weather, etc. If there are no such unavoidable situations, you can dedicate an extra day to any of the locations mentioned above to explore them further or relax and take in its beauty.

We suggest that you don’t add any additional location from the ones stated above on your extra day. That will lead to increased fatigue and lesser joy. You are on a holiday after all.

Suggested 5 Day Leh Ladakh Itinerary

Leh Ladakh Bike Trip: The Most Practical Leh Ladakh Itinerary

If you only wish to spend 5 days in Leh Ladakh, you can easily convert this itinerary to 5 day Leh Ladakh itinerary. Just fly in and out of Leh from Delhi and skip Days 1, 2, 3, 4, 11, 12, 13, 14 of the above itinerary . In addition to that, do a day trip to Turtuk instead of dedicating another entire day to it.

You can easily land in Ladakh, drop your luggage at a base hotel in Leh, hire a bike from Ladakh and visit all the important locations around Ladakh in 5 days.

Manali Leh Cycling – How to Prepare Yourself

Kanishka Poddar

Touring on a bicycle from Manali to Leh is a dream ride for cyclists across the globe. The Manali Leh Cycling ride takes you through five treacherous high mountain passes on the way, out of which 2 are above 5000 meters. wherein one used to be (falsely) claimed as the second highest motorable road in the world.

When you plan a bicycle trip on Manali Leh Highway, it generally takes 7-14 days to complete the 474 km long stretch between Manali to Leh. However, it all depends on your pace, motive, and time available for this bicycle ride.

I completed this bicycle ride from Manali to Leh in 10 days as I wanted to do at ease, with the comfort of stopping anywhere I feel like to enjoy the views, a cup of chai, or to make conversation with locals on the way.

Today, I am going to share with you how you can prepare yourself for a Manali Leh cycling trip in the coming seasons. In my subsequent blogs, I will also cover about Manali to Leh cycling itinerary in detail.

Let's quickly dive into the details:

Manali Leh Cycling Preparation

When I started preparing, I could not find any Manali to Leh cycling blog. Hence, I thought of starting a series on Discover with Dheeraj for making a successful Manali to Leh cycling trip. I am sure with this platform the blog will help 1000s of adventure cyclists looking forward to this adventurous journey on Manali Leh Highway .

Of course, needless to stay, before I get into the details, you would need some physical training for Manali Leh cycling trip before starting this trip. So, start taking short bicycle rides around the home or in smaller hills near you to build up the stamina.

How to Carry your Bicycle & Reach Manali

The best way to reach Manali from Delhi is to take an overnight HPTDC or HRTC Volvo bus from Delhi. These buses generally take anything between 12-14 hrs depending on the road condition and traffic.

The safest way to carry your bicycle on the bus is to pack it in a bicycle/TV box which easily goes in the luggage compartment of any Volvo buses. This makes sure you do not have any surprises when you start your bicycle trip from Manali to Leh

Important Tips

Some important tips for carrying a bicycle on Manali to Leh trip:

  • HPTDC Buses are the best bet as they only charge Rs. 300 extra for your bicycle. If you take a private bus, they can charge anything between Rs. 500 to Rs. 1000 for the bicycle.
  • The Bike Shop at Greenpark, in Delhi, is a recommended place for getting your bike packed at a nominal charge. They pack it pretty well to ensure the bike is safe.
  • I have always preferred touring on my bicycle and would carry it with me. However, another option is to rent a bicycle from Delhi or Manali. In Delhi, a decent MTB bike is available for RS. 500/- per day at The Bike Shop, and in Manali, it is available for Rs. 700/- per day. Eventually, both come down to the same price after the trip as you keep the bicycle for a longer duration when renting from Delhi than Manali.
  • It is next to impossible to find carrier racks and pannier bags on rent for Manali Leh cycling trip. So, it is advisable to buy it yourself. Decathlon and Happy Earth has good options at decent price points.
  • Once you reach Manali, Naveen at the local Firefox Store in New Manali is always up for help. He has every tool and spares for your bicycle and has extensive knowledge of the Manali Leh route.
  • Stay closer to the bus station in New Manali as you would not like to move around with the big bicycle box in Manali town.

So, now that you know how to pack and carry your bicycle for Manali Leh cycling trip, let’s get into the next steps.

Getting ready for the ultimate adventure of Manali Leh Bike Ride

Physical & Mental Fitness for Manali Leh Bicycle Ride

It is a popular saying that no amount of physical training is good for the Manali Leh cycling ride in the Himalayas as it all comes down to your mental fitness. Your body will be the last to give up in most of the extreme situations you would encounter in the route. However, anyone who has been regularly cycling and is comfortable on the saddle for a long duration is fit enough for the ride physically.

As I said, in the end, it all comes down to your mind. You need to be strong-headed to be able to complete the ride and need to have control over your emotions. Training for Manali to Leh Cycling Trip

Here are some important tips for the training for Manali to Leh cycling experience:

  • Understanding your route and terrain makes you a lot more confident about the ride. So, make sure you read through the list of places on Manali Leh Highway and understand where you expect what.
  • Small things like being able to repair your bicycle, having camping gears to camp in the middle of nowhere , enough food and water to survive also makes you mentally strong. It provides you with a cushion when caught in an adverse situation.
  • Be euphoric and proud for even thinking of doing this ride and for reaching Manali to start your ride. It is the biggest first step towards a lifetime adventure you are about to experience from Manali to Leh. Not many get to take that first step, remember and be motivated with this thought.
  • AMS/ High Altitude Sickness is a reality. To understand better, it also makes you way more comfortable as you will be able to take care of yourself in extreme situations on this bike ride from Manali to Leh.
  • Make sure you stay in Manali, preferably Solang Valley, for a couple of days to acclimatize and go short rides around Solang Valley and back. These extra days and ride in Manali or around Solang Valley will be a Manali for the next two weeks.

Know Your Bicycle

The foremost important thing during the Manali-Leh cycling experience is to know all about your bike and its mechanics. Once you leave Manali, you won’t find any mechanic to repair your bike for the next 400+ km till Upshi, Ladakh, or Leh.

There are few bicycle repair shops on Manali Leh Highway at Koksar, Keylong & Zing Zing Bar who can help you with your flat tire but nothing beyond that.

Things to know before the trip

Knowing the following things will definitely be of great help during this bicycle trip from Manali to Leh and will also make you mentally strong:

  • Practice repairing a flat tire & replacing tubes.
  • Know how to change or remove the chain links. It always helps to know the basics of cleaning and maintaining a bike chain .
  • One should know how to adjust and change brake/gear wires.
  • Learn how to change spokes without using the spoke tools (It’s a jugaad :))

As you get ready to leave pass the vegetation

List of Spares to Carry on Bicycle trip to Ladakh

Beyond this, here is a list of spares & tools you should definitely carry on Manali Leh cycling trip:

  • 2 sets of spare tubes, puncture repair kit & hand pump.
  • 1 set of spare chain link and chain link removal tool
  • Basic bicycle tool kit
  • Spare Spokes (2 pc)
  • Break/Gear Wires (2 pc)
  • Commonly used extra screws and nuts.
  • Machine oil or any lubricant. I personally prefer Machine oil over anything else.

Pro Tip: Make sure your tubes are matched with your bike and it is preferred to carry tubes with thicker nozzle.

Understanding Your Route from Manali to Leh

We need to understand that cycling in the  Himalayas isn’t even close to cycling in your regular terrains. On this Manali to Leh cycling trip, there will be long stretches with almost no population, places to stay or have food; you will be cycling at an average elevation of over 4500 meters, with thin air, deserts, strong headwinds, and nature around will never fail to surprise you with a new challenge.

It is, therefore, advisable to have some basic plans with destinations for night stays pre-identified. Also, it is important to understand every place on the way from Manali to Leh where you will find places to stay or eat, at minimum.

The route I took was as per my riding pace, places to stay and availability of food. I did carry my own camping gear but eventually camped only once in Darcha.

Here is a route that can be considered for completing the ride in 10 days.

Food & Stay Places on Manali to Leh Cycling Expedition

Here is a list of some important places on Manali Leh Highway where food and accommodations are available on this bicycle trip on Manali Leh Highway.

  • Zing Zing Bar (Lower & Upper)
  • Whiskey Nala
  • Debring (Lower & Upper)

During our ride, we tried to keep an average total weight of 15 kgs on our bike distributed evenly in the rear pannier bags, frame bag and on the handlebar.

Pack Wisely for your Bike Ride

Now many would understand the importance of packing if you haven’t been on a bicycle tour before. When making a Manali Leh cycling trip, it becomes all very important.

I have traveled through Thailand, Vietnam, and places in India on my bicycle and have learned over the period that packing your belonging wisely is the most important thing for any bicycle tour.

It not only keeps you less messy but also helps a lot with the ride, pace and balance. Here are a few things I consider while packing:

  • Frame bags should have the entire go-to thing you would need like money, gloves, camera, mobile, food, etc.
  • Both the Pannier Bags should weigh the same for a good balance.
  • One of the pannier bags should have things you use less whereas the other one can have more regular things. It helps you with being less messy.
  • If you don’t have front bags, do have some weight on the front while climbing or downhill for the right balance and control over your bicycle.
  • Solar Chargers should be kept on top as you will be using it while riding for charging the batteries. The best place is on top of the rack.

High Altitude Sickness is Real

High Altitude Sickness is a reality and we should never joke about it. Being on a bicycle will help you with acclimatization over the days as you climb gradually over the days and generally stays at high altitudes. However, I always advise taking preventive steps to help you complete the ride without any troubles.

  • Keep yourself hydrated. Drink as much water as you can and always remember that waters in the stream are safe and good to drink.
  • We used to carry a thermos filled with hot black tea. It used to be of great relief when the temperature starts dripping en route to the passes. Perhaps the best way to keep yourself warm.
  • If you have not been on high altitude earlier, it is advisable to consult your doctor and get prescribed for high altitude medicine, which can be taken a couple of days in advance. It helps a bit but you must consult the doctor.
  • Always remember the golden rule: Ride higher and sleep lower.
  • On Day 0 of your trip, make sure you do an acclimatization ride in and around Manali or Solang Valley. The ride to Solang Valley – Manali and back are most advisable.

Mobile Connectivity

There won’t be any good mobile network post Marhi till you reach Leh. You will notice some network in your BSNL phone in places like Keylong, Darcha, and Sissu but mostly limited connectivity will be present.

The army camps at Sarchu and Pang has a satellite phone and you can call anywhere across India and globe on payment of nominal fees. The rates for domestic calls were just under Rs. 2/- per min.

Navigation & Maps

Since there is no network Google Maps will not be of much help as even its offline contents need some internet to retrieve information. However, maps.me works flawlessly and is a savior in this route. So, download and take it else take a print out copy of this article for reference.

It works offline, has extensive details of the settlement, places to eat, treks & hikes and more. It even gives you an elevation profile for your ride.

Cycling on the roads of Manali to Leh

But the other passes are not to be underestimated, as each has something unique to offer.

Manali to Leh Cycle Trip

The Khardung La Pass may be the highest motorable pass, but the Bara Lachha La gives it a run for its money by being the loopiest of them all. The twins, Naki La and Lachu La stand side by side, whereas the Rohtang Pass grabs the title of being the moodiest as well as the most unpredictable of them all. The toughest cross? It has got to the Tanglang La Pass with its altitude of 5,360M.

If you think the passes are all there is, you would be mistaken, for one look at the Gata loops with their 21 curves is bound to send a chill down your spine. A few other examples of the awe this excursion has in store for you would include the More plains, considered one of the highest and coldest deserts in the world, offering a constant panoramic view of snow-laden peaks. As you go riding, you would get to witness the glory of the many distinctly-colored rivers like Chandra, Bhaga, and Indus .

As you reach the end of your adrenaline-filled journey, you get to view the high-altitude city of Leh, along with all its raw and untapped beauty. And while we can offer only a word picture of this surreal experience, the only way to realize its true essence is to experience it firsthand. Do not be scared of all this data, however, as hoards of people every year take on this expedition. To do it well, you will need to prepare of course.

Everything you need for those 7 to 14 days, bicycling along the 474 km long stretch between Manali to Leh should be well planned, along with some other important details we will discuss in this article.

Physical Preparation For Manali To Leh Cycle Trip

Before going on an expedition such as this bicycle trip from Manali to Leh, it is fair to assume you will need a good amount of preparation. There may be a popular saying that no amount of physical training is enough for this trip to the Himalayas as it all depends on your mental fitness, but that does not mean you need no physical preparation at all.

How-to-prepare-for-Manali-to-Leh-Cycle-Trip

There are a few factors to keep in mind as you train your body to endure all the excursions that are sure to befall you on this trip.

  • Companion: The first thing to remember is that this is a bicycling trip, and for that, you need to make sure you and anyone else in your party have been regularly cycling and are comfortable being on the saddle for a long duration of time.
  • Great stamina and endurance: Another thing to remember while checking your physical prowess before the trip is that you have enough stamina built. And for that, you need regular exercise. Building stamina or undertaking endurance exercises enhance your overall system. So, going on this trip is not something you plan over the weekend. You need to take some months and get yourself ready. Walking is a good endurance builder, but you need to match the intensity of your walking to the fitness level required for this trip. So, put on your best walking shoes and go jogging, or even better running to build endurance. This particular activity is free, but if you were to join a gym or go on the treadmill, you can keep a measuring eye on your progress.
  • Equipment-based training: If you were to join the gym you would see machines like treadmills, stair climbers, ski machines, steppers, and ellipticals everywhere, and with good reason as well. These can exact a great workout out of you in a small space as well as a little amount of time. And one of their great benefits is the ability to keep track of your progress by recording time for how long you could sustain your jogging stretch or even how fast you were able to sprint a certain distance. The negative side? These machines may be a bit too challenging for a beginner or anyone with low fitness levels. Thus, a trial run becomes necessary unless you overexert yourself on these.
  • Cycling: And finally, cycling is the only physical skill that is of utmost importance on this trip. Cycling, unlike the other types of machinery at the gym, does not need a certain fitness level. Most people who are unfit or even 50 pounds overweight find that stationary cycles are a great way to ease into the world of fitness. So, while preparing for your bicycle trip from Manali to Leh, it is important you try and bicycle as much as possible, to lessen the transition.

But it is not just exercising that would physically prepare you, you need to have good nutritious food every day as well. To make sure your overall health is at an optimum stage to undergo this particularly exerting expedition. A proper diet is often as important as physical exercise. Another thing added to your checklist is to get your full body check-up done to avoid any unforeseeable problems.

Mental Preparation For Manali To Leh Cycle Trip

While attempting this trip, your body will be the last to give up in those extreme situations encountered en route.

Mental-Preparation-for-Manali-to-Leh-Cycle-Trip

So you need to keep your wits about yourself and make sure you are mentally prepared for this trip.

  • Don’t lose focus: The first thing you need to work on is building your focus. If driving up or down a hill needs focus, you can only imagine how much focus would be needed for riding a bicycle through the mountains.
  • Keep calm: If you are someone who does not handle stress well, you might need to work on that before planning this trip. Keeping yourself calm when something unforeseen happens is a skill many lacks, but is needed in unpredictable places like these, where things are bound to deviate from the original plan. So, while on roads like these, be calm as you concentrate and be extremely confident that whatever happens, you would be able to back yourself and get through any kind of terrain or weather.
  • Know the basics: Another thing to remember is that this trip is a minimum of a week-long, so there might be times when you get antsy or the destination may seem far away. What is important in those situations is to be patient and trust yourself and your plan. Before setting off, you have had your plans along with certain contingencies ready, and it is important to remember that during those times when you get agitated. Setting off without learning the basics like how to make yourself a meal with certain ingredients or how to fix a flat tire, tighten a nut, or make sure your carrier is not undone is a grave mistake as well. Knowing these basics would make sure your trip is far smoother.

Going on this trip, you can never be 100% prepared for all the challenges, but if you can, try to incorporate all the suggestions regarding your physical as well as mental preparation to enjoy the expedition to its fullest. Once you set your mind and body to it, the surrounding scenery would do the rest and you will find yourself at Leh before you know it.

High Altitude Sickness During Manali To Leh Cycle Trip

While living in the plains most people don’t consider high altitude sickness as a thing. But it is nothing to joke about.

High-Altitude-Sickness-during-Manali-to-Leh-Cycle-Trip

Being on a bicycle may help with acclimatization over the days as you climb the steep grade and generally stays at high altitudes, but still, there are preventive steps that can be taken to help complete the ride without any problems.

  • Stay hydrated: Hydration is a must and should be remembered, especially at high altitudes. Drink whatever water you have with you and always remember to refill at streams as they are safe and good to drink from.
  • Keep yourself warm : Apart from water, carrying a thermos filled with hot black tea is also advisable. As the temperatures start to drop en route to the passes, you will find that a hot cup of tea makes all the difference in the world. Not to mention that it is probably one of the best ways to keep yourself warm. The problem mostly occurs with those who have had no prior experience with high altitudes. If that is the case, it is always advised to seek a doctor and get some high-altitude medicine. Taking it a couple of days earlier helps the cause, but consulting a doctor is a must.
  • Acclimatization is the key: The golden rule to follow in cases of high altitudes is to ride higher and sleep lower. Another way to prepare yourself and acclimatize is to ride in and around Manali or Solang Valley on Day 0 of your journey. The most advisable ride is to Solang Valley – Manali and back. As you see it is not much you can do to make sure you don’t get sick. But if you do keep these pointers in mind, your transition will get a little easier. But ultimately it is time and experience that helps your body, so the more you hike or ride in high-altitude places, your body will acclimatize better.

Know Your Bicycle For Manali To Leh Cycle Trip

The very basic of going on this bicycle expedition from Manali to Leh is that you would be bicycling your way through 500-ish km. And for that, you need to make sure you know everything there is to know about bicycles. In the plains, whenever your cycle breaks, you can just go to the nearest repair shop and have the issue solved.

Know-Your-Bicycle-for-Manali-to-Leh-Cycle-Trip

But in the hilly areas, where the population is sparse, you would be hardpressed to find such shops.

  • Once you start your trip and leave Manali, you won’t find any mechanic to repair your bike at all, at least for the next 400+ km till Upshi, or Leh. For smaller issues like a flat tire, there are some bicycle repair shops on Manali Leh Highway at Koksar, Keylong, and Zing Zing Bar but nothing beyond that. So, before setting on the trip, take some time and get to know your cycle.
  • Knowing your bike also includes learning a few tricks of the trade, which results in you being confident that if your bicycle were to indeed break down in the middle of the road, you could salvage the situation. For example, if you know how to change the tires as well as replace the tubes, you won’t need to rush to the nearest repair shop right away. And with enough practice, you could do it in recorded time and be on your merry way.
  • Knowing the basics of cleaning and maintaining the chain on your bike is also important. That way you could change or remove the chain links when needed. Adjusting or changing break or gear wires is also a piece of important knowledge on the part of the rider. And lastly, the spokes, and how to change them without using the spoke tools.

So, you can see knowing your bicycle inside out is indispensable knowledge every rider must have if they aim to complete the trip with minimum hassle.

Things To Carry For Your for Manali To Leh Cycle Trip

There are many essential things to be packed for those 7 to 14 days, things humans cannot survive without. And with this list is also included some bicycle parts as just knowing how to fix your bicycle may not be enough if you were to have a malfunction along a secluded highway. So, it is just as important to carry some spares that may be needed along the way. So first things first, necessary items to be packed include clothes.

● 4 Full sleeved non-cotton T-shirts

● 1 Fleece T-shirt

● 1 Fleece Jacket

● 1 Hollowfill/ Down feather Jacket

● 1 Wind and Waterproof Jacket and pant combo

● 3 Synthetic Trek pants (avoid shorts, capris, or fitted denim)

● 1 Pair of Fleece or woolen gloves

But clothing is not enough, everyone needs at least some grooming products every day. So, it is safe to assume products like moisturizer, sunscreen, hand sanitizer, toothbrush, toothpaste, anti-bacterial powder, chapstick, toilet paper, wipes, and quick-dry towels are something everyone must pack.

The terrain is considered while packing the essentials, so, it is advisable to pack a woolen cap. For those who need glasses, it is advised to wear contact lenses and use UV-protected dark sunglasses with side covers. Trekking shoes with both cotton and woolen socks are also a must.

Things To Carry For Manali To Leh Cycle Trip

Other Important Tips For Manali To Leh Cycle Trip

There are a few other necessary tips you must remember as well if you plan to take your bicycle and go on a trip from Manali to Leh.

  • Firstly, you have to take your bicycle with you, and transporting that is a hassle. If you were to take a private bus, they could charge you anything between Rs. 500 to Rs. 1000 for your bicycle. Considering this, an HPTDC bus would be your best bet as they charge just Rs. 300 extra for the bike. If you wish to buy a bike though, the Bike Shop at Greenpark, Delhi, is an excellent recommended place to get one at a nominal price. Their packaging also makes sure your bicycle is safe for the journey.
  • Apart from buying one you could also rent one, either from Delhi or Manali itself. A good MTB bike is usually rented for around Rs. 500 a day at Delhi. On the other hand, carrier racks and pannier bags for rent are not a good idea, and neither are they readily available. So it is best to buy them yourself. And once you reach Manali, it is usually advised to stay near the bus station in New Manali. That way you won’t have you move around with your big bicycle box in the town.
  • It is also important to remember to bring a map with you. There you will not find any reliable network connection, so Google Maps will be out of the question. However, some websites provide maps, which in turn work flawlessly and are therefore a savior on this route. So, download a map of the area and take it with you on the trip for safety. Keeping a list of all the places on the highway that offers food and accommodations on your bicycle trip is also a good idea. The places in order are- Kothi → Marhi → Koksar → Sissu → Gondola → Tandi → Keylong → Jispa → Darcha → Zing Zing Bar (Lower and Upper) → Bharatpur → Sarchu → Whiskey Nala → Pang Debring (Lower and Upper) → Rumptse → Upshi → Karu → Thiksey → Leh

In the end, no matter where you’re going, either from Manali to Leh or even the Manali to the Khardung La cycling trip, knowing the things mentioned earlier is enough for you to prepare yourself for a cycling trip to Ladakh.

It is a gateway to enter Shyok and Nubra Valley. This road came into existence in 1988 due to the hard work and interest of the government. The Indian Army maintains it. There you can find Caffe and Medical services handled and maintained by the Indian Army.
  • As we make our way to the desert town of Hundar, the ride will get steeper. Upon reaching, soak in the beautiful sight of the white dunes and have the views prettier. The sand looks like moon sand due to its white color. It will be an experience of a lifetime riding the exotic Bactrian Camel or the double-humped camel, found in the cold desert.

Best adventure ever. Also made a lot of new friends while on this trip and learnt a lot about the place as well. Great accommodation, food and transportation. The fuel comes with the package as well which was a great thing for us. Everything was also well organized for us. Best trip ever.

It was our dream to explore Ladakh and it came true. We also had an amazing guide throughout the tour. The food and accommodation were great as well. Loved it.

We came with lot of memories and photographs.

This is the most precious bike trip that I have taken in my lifetime. Once we reached Leh we got introduced to the fellow bikers and followed by the briefing session. We also spent one day in Leh and saw some of the most beautiful monasteries and markets. this is lifetime memorable movement.

A beautifully organized trip to a beautiful place. The whole tour was thrilling and adventurous. The local support won my heart, especially our team leader and host. Amazed by the experience and I would definitely like to go on another trip through Banbanjara....

While the bike ride was fun, one must admit that it was indeed very tedious. I wish I had taken a partner along. That was a convenient option to do. That being said, the trip was overall a nice and fun😃 experience. I had a great time. I enjoyed the bike😉 tour so much.

It was sheer and absolute fun. I wish I could take more such biking expeditions. It was not that costly too. It was quite cheap and affordable. Also, we covered some of the best bikable roads ever. The fun of being on the road is unexplainable.😊😊😊

One of the best experiences I ever had. Staff members were too good, helpful, and fun at the same time. The weather was splendid, and stays offered by Wanderon were good and good too good.

Both motorbike aficionados and adventure seekers will love the Leh Ladakh bike trip ride with Umling La Pass. It is a once-in-a-lifetime adventure because of the rough terrain, spectacular scenery, and high heights. This manual gives you a thorough overview of all you need to know to organize and carry out this epic expedition.

Planning Your Leh Bike Trip

Best Time to Visit

From May through September, when the weather is largely consistent, is the best time to bike through Leh. Visitation should be avoided during the winter when numerous routes are closed due to significant snowfall.

Obtaining Permits

Umling La Pass and other restricted regions require permits for visitors from Leh. These licenses are available through the Leh District Administration office. Make sure you have all the required paperwork and adhere to the application procedure.

Route Planning

Consider the distance, geography, and driving conditions as you carefully plan your trip. Popular routes include Leh-Umling La Pass, Srinagar-Leh Highway, and Manali-Leh Highway. For guidance on the best route for your ability level, speak with experienced riders or tour guides.

Preparing Your Motorcycle

Choosing the Right Bike

Choose a motorbike that is dependable and strong, appropriate for long journeys and difficult terrain. Popular options include KTM, Himalayan, and Royal Enfield. Before starting the voyage, make sure your bike has been properly serviced and maintained.

Essential Gear

Invest in quality riding gear, including a helmet, riding jacket, gloves, knee and elbow guards, and riding boots. Additionally, carry tools and spare parts for basic repairs on the road.

Modifications

Think about modifying your motorcycle as needed, such as installing off-road tires, enhancing the suspension, and adding crash protection. The performance of your bike can be improved with these tweaks under difficult circumstances.

Packing for the Trip

Clothing and Equipment

Pack layers of warm clothing, rain gear, and a windproof jacket to prepare for varied weather situations. If you intend to camp along the trip, bring a first aid kit, some basic toiletries, and your camping gear.

Documents and Essentials

Remember to bring your identification, license, permits, and travel insurance papers. Extra copies of these documents should be kept in a waterproof bag.

Snacks and Water

Stock up on plenty of water and non-perishable food to stay hydrated throughout the journey. Access to food and water may be restricted in isolated regions.

Health and Acclimatization

Acclimatization

Acclimatization is essential to avoid altitude sickness because Leh is located at a high altitude. Before trying Umling La Pass, which reaches an elevation of more than 19,000 feet, spend a few days in Leh to acclimatize.

Health Precautions

Before your journey, speak with a healthcare provider about how to prevent altitude sickness and get the necessary immunizations. Carry medication for common maladies like allergies, gastrointestinal discomfort, and headaches.

The Leh Bike Trip Itinerary

Leh to Umling La Pass

Rugged terrain and erratic weather make the trip to Umling La Pass difficult. To avoid being exhausted, properly plan your daily miles and rest stops.

Leh: Take a tour of this old city and stop by the Leh Palace, Shanti Stupa, and Leh Market.

Admire the breathtakingly blue waters of Pangong Lake, a high-altitude lake that was featured in the film “3 Idiots.” Enjoy the stunning scenery, dunes, and the unusual opportunity to ride a double-humped camel in Nubra Valley.

Safety Tips and Challenges

Altitude Sickness

Recognize the signs of altitude sickness, and if they worsen, descend right away. In the first few days at a high altitude, drink plenty of water and refrain from strenuous physical activity.

Weather Conditions

In the Himalayas, the weather can change suddenly. Regularly check the weather forecasts and be ready for sudden changes in the weather and the state of the roads.

Road Conditions

The gravel, dirt, and water crossings on the routes leading to Umling La Pass make them potentially dangerous. Ride carefully, wear safety equipment, and be ready for difficult riding circumstances.

Mechanical Issues

Perform routine maintenance and mechanical checks on your motorcycle. Carry the necessary equipment and extra parts to handle frequent issues on the road.

Accommodation Options

Hotels and Guesthouses

A variety of lodging choices are available in Leh, ranging from affordable guesthouses to opulent hotels. During the busiest travel times, reserve your lodging in advance.

Camping is a fantastic alternative along the way for the daring. Make sure you have the required camping equipment and research any applicable local laws.
