Presented by BBC Radio 6 Music DJ Chris Hawkins, the event featured live performances from Courteeners frontman Liam Fray , as well as English Teacher, Lisa Stansfield , The K’s and more.

Guest presenters from the region included former Manchester United footballer Gary Neville , New Order ‘s Gillian Gilbert and Stephen Norris, and Grimsby-born actor Thomas Turgoose ( This Is England ). ‌ Neville awarded Courteeners with the Band Of The Year prize. Responding to the nod, Fray said: “It’s really nice to be in a room with this much talent… but this isn’t about us, it’s about Nordoff And Robbins and the work that they do, it’s about music, and the way they’re changing lives with music and sometimes even saving lives with music.”

The singer also delivered an acoustic rendition of Courteeners’ classic single ‘Not Nineteen Forever’ and a cover of Oasis ‘ ‘The Masterplan’.

Rising Leeds band English Teacher picked up the Best Newcomer award, and performed ‘Albatross’ and ‘Albert Road’ from their acclaimed debut album ‘This Could Be Texas’ (watch the video below).

Soloist and former One Direction member Tomlinson was named Artist Of The Year at the first Northern Music Awards.

In a video acceptance speech, the ‘Faith In The Future’ singer said: “It means the world to win Artist Of The Year, thank you, thank you, thank you. And thanks to Nordoff And Robbins for doing such an incredible thing.”

The Charlatans ‘ frontman Tim Burgess received the Northern Music Award 2024, and said it was “incredible to be recognised”.

“Music is important on so many levels, and I’m a firm believer in the unique way that it can connect people,” he continued.

“It means a lot to me to be able to support the great work of Nordoff And Robbins, who use music therapy to unlock life for some of the most vulnerable people in society – and through the funds raised by everyone coming along to the Northern Music Awards, we’ll be opening up music therapy to even more people across the north.”

Lisa Stansfield, meanwhile, took home the Northern Icon Award. She commented: “Music and singing are in my blood as much as being a proud Mancunian, so to be named Northern Icon at the first ever Northern Music Awards is an immense privilege.

“I’m incredibly proud to support Nordoff And Robbins to raise money for a new music therapy centre for the people of Greater Manchester. The benefits of music therapy are simply life-changing, helping children and adults who are otherwise isolated to break through barriers and find a connection.”

Elsewhere, Leeds’ beloved Brudenell Social Club and Manchester’s famous Band On The Wall were both named Inspirational Venues Of The Year (under 500-capacity and 2,000-capacity, respectively).

Nadra Shah, Director Of Engagement And Communications, Nordoff And Robbins, said: “The Northern Music Awards are all about honouring the massive musical talent that continues to come out of this region. We want to thank all the artists, venues, festivals, music industry teams, sponsors and music fans who have come together to celebrate with us and make this first-ever awards a reality.

“We’ve had an amazing night honouring the enormous success of both established artists and some of the region’s most exciting new emerging talent. The awards aim to support and help to grow the ecosystem of northern musicians whilst shining a light on the transformative work that Nordoff And Robbins does with music therapy to connect with some of the region’s most isolated communities.

“In 2024 we’re celebrating 20 years of music therapy in Greater Manchester and we’re excited that this show will support our vision to open a brand new music therapy centre for the people of the city – helped by the money raised from these awards.”

The Northern Music Awards are due to take place in a different northern city each year, kickstarting a new chapter in celebrating the diverse talent from this part of England, per a press release.

The charity’s official website reads: “We deliver music therapy to a range of clients across the UK, including some of the most vulnerable people in society. We meet the growing need for music therapy by training music therapists and ensuring that their skills are not only maintained but developed.

“We research music-making and its potential to inform how we can support our clients and people in challenging situations.”

Meanwhile, Courteeners are set to make appearances at TRMSMT Festival in Glasgow and Lytham Festival in Lytham St Annes, Lancashire this summer. Find any remaining tickets here .

English Teacher, meanwhile, released their first album ‘This Could Be Texas’ earlier this month via Island.

In a glowing five-star review , NME wrote: “[It is] everything you want from a debut; a truly original effort from start to finish, an adventure in sound and words, and a landmark statement.”

Northern music awards winners call for more help for region’s emerging talents

Lisa Stansfield says difficulties young people face in getting a start are ‘disgusting’, at inaugural ceremony in Manchester

More should be done to help talented emerging musicians from the north of England, top artists have said at the inaugural Northern music awards in Manchester.

The awards, run by the music therapy charity Nordoff and Robbins, took place in a packed Albert Hall, with winners including the former One Direction singer Louis Tomlinson – who beat Sam Fender and Self Esteem to pick up artist of the year – the Courteeners, Aitch and Mel C.

Awards were presented by New Order, the former footballer Gary Neville and the mayor of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham.

Speaking to the Guardian before picking up the northern icon award on Tuesday evening, the Rochdale singer and songwriter Lisa Stansfield said it was “disgusting” how hard the government had made it for young people to get a start in the music industry.

Highlighting the economic climate and the lack of dedicated support for the arts, Stansfield said: “There aren’t enough platforms for young musicians. It’s made very, very difficult by this government for them to do anything. They don’t have any money and they’re being charged to go everywhere to do gigs. It’s disgusting really. And this government don’t care.

“It’s shit. Do you know what I hate that people say? People who have choices always say everybody has a choice, and it’s disgusting because there are a lot of people who don’t have any choice whatsoever. And all they need is a tiny little push, that’s all they need.”

Lily Fontaine from the band English Teacher performing on stage at the awards.

Research earlier this year found half of the UK’s most streamed artists of all time were from London , while last year was the ninth in a row that the prestigious Mercury prize was given to a London artist. The jazz quintet Ezra Collective, who won the award with their album Where I’m Meant to Be, said more funding outside London would help diversify the prize.

The Leeds band English Teacher, who won newcomer of the year at the awards, agreed. They said northern artists were having to spend a lot of time going back and forth to London for gigs and to make connections in the industry.

“Making our way up the industry ladder in the past few years I think there is definitely a sense of [it being London-centric], particularly in attitudes and where the attention is directed,” said guitarist Lewis Whiting.

His band’s frontwoman, Lily Fontaine, added that music charities had helped take them from their formation in 2020 to releasing their debut album earlier this month , but the charities consistently struggled for funding.

She also highlighted BBC Introducing, a nationwide local radio programme dedicated to unearthing new music, as a key factor in the band’s rise. The BBC announced last year it would be cutting the number of local programmes from 32 to 20 as part of cost-saving measures.

Fontaine said: “I think that was a shame because I think that having a lot of industry people in the regional areas really helps – it really helped us. I think filling those gaps, those elements that have been taken away, with something else would be great.”

Tim Burgess after winning his award

The Charlatans frontman, Tim Burgess, who was presented with the 2024 Northern music award, said tackling UK-wide issues, such as better pay for musicians, would help lift all artists.

“We need to look at it and try to make sure there’s equality,” he said.

Liam Fray, of the Courteeners, said it was “probably inevitable” that so many popular artists are from the capital because “it’s expected that you would go to London to make it”.

But his home city of Manchester was thriving musically, he said, and there was a sense of optimism in the north. “What I have noticed in the last couple of years is the amount of bands moving to Manchester – I’ve got friends who are producers and they can’t move for work. Not Mancunian bands, bands from everywhere else, so that’s exciting.”

Born 11 April 1966 Lisa Stansfield dominated the soul pop music world in the late 80s and early 90s with her smooth sophisticated sound. If George Michael was the king of blue-eyed soul then she was the queen. She has sold an astonishing 20 million albums around the world.

Though Stansfield’s breakthrough in the mainstream was not until 1989, she got her start in the music industry in 1980. During this year she won a singing competition for the program “Search for a Star”. This accomplishment led to a series of appearances in television shows and several single releases. In 1984 she entered in the pop group Blue Zone consisting of her fellow school mates Ian Devaney and Andy Morris. The band put out several singles which would breach their way into the UK top 100 starts as well as America’s “Billboard Hot 100”. Even some of the group’s B-sides such as “Big Thing” became a favorite on radio stations and dance clubs. The group only released one album before Stansfield broke out into her own solo career following the success of the Coldcut single“People Hold On”, which she was featured on.

Almost immediately after the release of this song Arista records signed Stansfield on as a solo artist and in 1989 she put out her first solo full length “Affection”. This album would prove to be the most successful release of her career and one of the most successful releases in soul pop history. The album has gone on to sell 5 million copies around the world and has been certified as 3x platinum in the UK. During its release it topped charts around the world, landing at #1 in Austria and Italy and #2 in Sweden, the UK, Switzerland, Spain and Germany. The album housed her biggest single “All Around the World” . This track peaked to the very top of charts in many countries and scored the #3 position on the Billboard Hot 100. The album was also a critical success and got her two nominations at the Grammy Awards for Best New Artist and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. Riding of the hype of this album Stansfield became involved in several charity organizations such as raising money for anti-poverty efforts in Ethiopia and raising awareness for AIDS. She also put out a Christmas single “Do They Know It’s Christmas”, which claimed #1 on the UK Singles Chart for 3 weeks.

Her second full length effort “Real Love” was produced and partially written by her previous Blue Zone bandmates Devaney and Morris. This release was yet another critical and commercial sensation entering the top ten charts across the world and strongly securing a name in both the R&B and hip-hop world. Stansfield followed this up by recording a few singles for movies. In 1992 her song “Someday (I’m Coming Back)” was included in the “The Bodyguard: Original Soundtrack Album” and in the following year her song “In All the Right Places” became the theme song for the dramatic film “Indecent Proposal”.

Stansfield’s involvement in the film industry continued to grow with time and after the release of her third self-titled album she made her film debut in the 1999 movie “Swing”. She also contributed many jazz and swing inspired songs for the soundtrack and even did a duet with one of her music hero’s “Barry White”. Stansfield’s next two albums “Face Up” and “The Movement”, while not as commercially viable as her previous releases, did mark a stylistic change and received positive reviews from the critics. Stansfield ventured into electronic dance and disco music with these releases and was lauded for her more experimental approach. It would be a decade before Stansfield released her long awaited follow up “Seven”. During this music hiatus she was performing in theatre productions and television series such as “The Edge of Love”. Her comeback album was received with near unanimous praise amongst critics and was welcomed in the charts at #13 in UK and Germany, #25 in Austria, #32 in the Czech Republic, and #42 in Switzerland.

Live-Bewertungen

Lisa Stansfield hit the mainstream with her amazing debut "Affection", but over the past few years she has managed to keep a fairly low profile. Though she took a 10 year break between 2004's "The Moment" and her most recent "Seven" she is simply not an artist to be forgotten. You can still hear her influence echo across many relevant pop artist today (particularly Little Dragon and Jessie Ware).

Stansfield took the freeform styles of funk and soul but put her own sterilized spin on it. Many may criticize her for tampering with these genres perhaps suggesting that she turned these emotive elements into a cold calculated form; however the intrigue and originality of her sound cannot be denied. She still keeps the passion of soul alive but presents it in a very sleek modernized manner. Her stage presence is amazingly cool and collected. Her vocal delivery is powerful but is always in control.

To this day her audiences still lose it to her chart topping single "All Around the World" . They also can not resist the lovely grooves of her new recordings. One of her most recent tracks "Can't Dance" showcases Nile Roger style guitar riffs, syncopated bass and four to the floor drumbeats. Her touring band is outstanding. Lisa's back up singer hits every note in her immense range and her horn section always seem to be right on time when dropping in to add a needed punch to the melody. Lisa 's latest album features compositions by orchestrator, Jery Hey, a collaborator essential to the creations of Michael Jackson's "Thriller", so you know it is going to have that disco vibe that will drag you to the dance floor. At a Lisa Stansfield show you can sing your heart out to "All Woman" or dance your self to death to "This Time Is the Right Time". Anytime is the right time to see Lisa deliver a kick ass performance.

I have been to see Lisa live since the early 90's and her latest concert at Southend Cliffs Pavilion was truly AMAZING....Her voice seems to be better than ever. She preformed many of her classic hits: All around the world, People hold on, etc. but for me its her new songs that her voice really sounds out. She has moved on as a singer, with what I feel is now a much more relevant soulful sound. The tracks for her current Album Seven are outstanding with "Conversation" the standout moment of the night. I wish the general public would take a chance on her new material once again as they will be in for a surprise, powerful soulful, meaningful music that is timeless. She is a British treasure that we all need to take to our hearts and make sure she keeps giving such pure joy for may years to come. BUY THE ALBUM/SEE HER LIVE!

Lady Lisa Stansfield was amazing last night at The Music Box in San Diego. She sounds great, her band is fabulous, and the energy was high. She sang a few songs from the Deeper album as well as several of her classics! We bought the VIP Meet and Greet package and were so excited to meet Lisa. She was lovely, gracious and warm. It was a night we will always remember and cherish. Lisa Stansfield is “All Woman.”

Lisa was fantastic! What a voice and energy! So fun to watch her and her whole band play almost all the songs we remember and some of her new stuff, which is very reminiscent of her old songs. Just incredible and enjoyable.

For those who saw her at the Fillmore, we also had the best opening act ever-the DJ was incredible and played the kind of music we wanted to hear.

Great vocals and band in a great setting. These halls are much more personal for listening to quality music. Lisa still has a strong voice and put a lot of effort into her show. the band were good and overall a good show for the money.

1 plus was the support act of Jazz Morley, very unusual that support acts are good, she was worth her own gig

Lisa Stansfield was amazing from start to finish mixing tracks from her new album ‘Deeper’ with hit classics from the 80’s and 90’s. Lisa absolutely rocked the Royal Philharmonic venue Liverpool. Loved every minute of what was a truly brilliant concert! Lisa is just as goood now as she was back then. 10/10.
