Kennebunkport Luxury Vacation
We love Kennebunkport… so do Presidents , painters and poets… it’s a beautiful seaside village encompassing two towns, four beautiful beaches, miles of coastline, an iconic lighthouse, and a plethora of great pubs, waterfront restaurants and lovely inns and hotels.
Confession: we lived here and loved Kennebunkport … from the beautiful Kennebunk River that divides Kennebunk and Kennebunkport – perfect for boating, paddleboarding, kayak and canoeing, to the oceanfront beaches and walks of Gooch’s, Parson’s Way, Colony Beach, and Goose Rocks Beach. We are proud to call Kennebunkport our home for 26 years!
What we love most about KPort is the culture, you have hard working lobstermen sitting at a bar next to Secret Service agents, famed artists and actors (we are not going to name drop) enjoying happy hour at favorite bars like Old Vines and Alisson’s. Sightings of President Bush, #43 (as #41 passed in 2018 along with his beloved wife Barbara), along wtih big tuna catches off commercial fishing boats are common from the same pier.
Our idea of a perfect Kennebunkport day is a morning walk along Ocean Avenue past St Anne’s Church, Spouting Cave and the Blow Hole to Walkers Point, coffee at Dock Square Coffee House, and a trip to the Farmer’s Market in downtown Kennebunk. Then a boat ride!
We love to get out on the water, boating , the best way to see the Maine coast. For a great hour and half lobster boat tour, Rugosa Tours leaves the Nonantum Resort and Captain Bob gives a wonderful, narrated tour as you pass the Bush Compound, the seals and birds on Bumpkin Island and out towards Goat Island Light. You even pull up lobster traps and learn all about lobstering. If you prefer to sail, the Pineapple Ketch offers a beautiful sailboat for a two hour cruise, particularly at sunset. Or for speed lovers, New England Eco Adventures rib boat is wild, and wet, zipping to Wells and Cape Porpoise!
Lunch at The Boathouse Bar KPT overlooking the River is a ten, especially when you can sit outside on the riverfront deck. See Kennebunkport’s best restaurants reviews .
Depending on the tides, we highly recommend renting a kayak, SUP or canoe from Kayak Excursions to go up River, ideally with an incoming tide, continue under the bridge toward Cape Arundel Golf Course (where former Presidents play) and beyond to picnic rocks. Time the tide right, just before high tide, and you can ride it inland and when the tide turns – you can ride it back toward the sea. That’s true luxury – letting nature give you a push paddling versus charging against the strong Maine tides.
Drive out to Cape Porpoise , a traditional working pier, for stunning views of Goat Island Lighthouse, and continue on out to the best sand beach – Goose Rocks Beach for a walk. Rent a bike from Kayak Excursions to cycle around the coastal roads, out Ocean Ave and to Cape Porpoise.
For shopping, Kennebunkport’s Dock Square is loaded with fun boutiques for clothing, jewelry, home décor, art and gourmet food. Our favorite Kennebunkport Shops: Dannahs’, Dock Square Clothier, Daytrip Society, Minka, Spaces, and Mainely Vines. Be sure to browse some of the best art galleries in Maine, Maine Art is the largest – with the Lyman Whitaker wind sculptures out front.
Happy Hour in Kennebunkport and Lower Village is happening. We love getting drinks at Stripers at the Breakwater Hotel in the Adirondack chairs out front on the riverbanks, or The Boathouse on the deck, or the Spirit – the sailing vessel turned bar on the river. Old Vines Wine Bar across the bridge on Port Road is cozy and convivial, with an extensive cocktail and wine list plus tapas style bites. Batson River Brewery has a cool vibe for a distillery with an outdoor deck overlooking town.
Enjoy live music at Vinegar Hill Music Theatre – a classic old playhouse barn, or hear live music and meet the locals at Pilot House, Pedros or The Burleigh. The most splendid sunset spot is The Colony Hotel by the saltwater pool looking out to sea. Then head to your hotel, your bed, and rest till you do it all again!
Kennebunkport’s best waterfront hotels! See this guide to the best lodging in Kennebunkport , the best beachfront inn is the Seaside, the most romantic BnB is The Kennebunkport Captains Collection , the most fun and family friendly on the water is Nonantum Resort.
Visit Kennebunkport during some of its best festivals , Launch – a Maritime Festival, fall foliage and Halloween when Summer Street decorates their haunted homes to the hilt, and Christmas Prelude in Kennebunkport which resembles a Rockwellian holiday postcard.
You will soon “sea” why we “LoveKpt” the best seaside town in Maine! Love where you live! And be sure to tour the coast and stay at our top waterfront Maine hotels from Ogunquit to Kennebunkport to Camden and beyond – Acadia & Bar Harbor .
“Kennebunkport has been my anchor to windward throughout a full and challenging life. It has kept me grounded and focused on what is really important.” -President George H. W. Bush, 41

- # 1 in Best Maine Beaches
A politico can tell you that the Bush family has been vacationing on Kennebunkport for years. And a paparazzo might encourage you to camp out along Ocean Drive to snap a blurry photo of the presidential family at their Walker's Point compound. But harboring politicians isn't even what this southern coastal area of Maine does best, nor is it what the town should be known for. Kennebunkport is simple, sea-centric bliss: a natural beach destination with miles of rugged shoreline dotted with summer homes and sailboats. In town, local fisher- and lobstermen deliver the morning's catch to the open-air cafes while artists open up shop on the wharves of Dock Square . Even the beaches are unassuming and quiet, with secret footpaths leading you from the road. Here, you might have literally found the place where you can get away from it all.

Hidden Pond
In an area not short on antique furniture, white table cloths and afternoon jazz, the rustic yet luxurious Hidden Pond provides a welcome breath of fresh sea air.
The Atmosphere
Four miles north of the bustling Southern Maine seaside town of Kennebunkport, the cottages and bungalows of Hidden Pond are dotted throughout pretty woodland and feel a world away from the crowds downtown. This is certainly a luxurious, eminently comfortable spot but simple and unpretentious so as not to detract from the real draw; the nature that surrounds you. If summer camp was designed with adults in mind, this might be the dream. Hiking trails snake through the woods, bikes are on hand for adventures further afield and two pools (one for adults only) sit among the trees. End your days roasting s’mores around the bonfire.
Closer to the central lodge building are the two bedroom cottages, perfect for families, and a little further afield the secluded one bedroom cottages. These rustic shingle buildings with screen porches blend into their leafy surroundings perfectly with their simple style belying the luxury inside.
Food and Drink
Earth, the resort’s fine dining restaurant, draws diners from throughout Kennebunkport and is one of Southern Maine’s finest.

Where to Eat, Stay, and Play in Kennebunkport, Maine

Since the 19th century, the twin Maine towns of Kennebunk and Kennebunkport have seemed to hover above other seaside destinations, suspended in a sort of celestial, enduringly preppy haze. Over 150 years as a moneyed shipbuilding community and sailing resort will do that—not to mention result in a deluge of historic sea captains homes-turned-private mansions. It’s a veneer that hasn’t cracked—not even under the weight of thousands of height-of-summer tourists who’ve flooded in for the beaches and lobster rolls at The Clam Shack . And a cluster of unquestionably lovely businesses have been bolstering the towns’ dreamy ideal since the ‘70s—couth spots like The White Barn Inn , and Ocean at The Cape Arundel Inn , both perfect for Muffy and Chip to get G&Ts between croquet and a dependably exquisite prix fixe.
But over the last several years, barging into all that refinement has been an influx of newcomers that are by turns a little funkier, a tad more casual, more worldly, and in some cases downright cool. Chefs from across the country are moving here and making their mark with menus that dovetail tradition with innovation, while heavyweight restaurants from large cities are choosing Kennebunk/port as the first place to open new sibling iterations. Add to that the swell of new inns and boutiques that are increasingly staying open through winter and accommodating the towns’ off-season festivals, and not only is the area offering more to do than sail, it’s shaping up to become an urbane year-round destination.

Rosella KPT's sushi menu keeps the seafood as local as possible.
Best new restaurants in Kennebunkport
When the folks behind Rosella , the East Village’s wildly popular boîte and the only sustainable sushi restaurant in New York City, started looking around for an ideal place for a second location, they landed on not Washington D.C., Boston, or even Portland, but Kennebunk. And they brought with them their eccentric and creative approach to just about everything. The new outpost, Rosella KPT , is tricked out with hand-sewn art inspired by indigo patchworks; Chef Matt Kramer avoids overfished species and keeps the seafood as local as possible—which in Kennebunk means the entire state is literally his oyster. Said bivalves show up in dishes like Mere Points from Brunswick with fish sauce granita and blood orange, alongside sashimis of dry-aged steelhead trout and silken bluefin tuna.
The same thing happened when Via Sophia , Washington D.C.’s modern osteria, opened an additional location. Again—in Kennebunk. This version’s called Via Sophia by the Sea , and is more seafood-centric than the original. Its chic brown leather banquettes fill up nightly with well-heeled twenty- and thirty-somethings in for the cioppino teeming with plump mussels and lobster, but also to down Negronis beneath the abstract art and mod bubble lighting. (PSA: The sour orange cheesecake deserves its own cult, and could double as an aprés-dinner pillow.) Downstairs there’s even a little nightlife rearing its head in town. The Rabbit Hole , a ‘20s-inspired speakeasy lounge, pulls in a multigenerational crowd for Alice in Wonderland-themed cocktails and live music.
“Kennebunk has been pretty buttoned up with no nightlife until now, and there’s still a lot of old money people here,” says bar manager Ashley Wilson. “But things are getting more relaxed. We see everyone from 21-year-olds to grandmothers that I’m surprised are still awake.”
Zuni Cafe alums Nate Norris and Annie Callan have also migrated to the area—where they’ve been visiting from San Francisco most of their lives—and are outfitting a funky space downtown with tin ceilings and gleaming tiles to open Bev’s Café & Market . And even the stalwart classics are morphing. White Barn Inn , hands-down the ne plus ultra of fine dining in the area, has opened Little Barn in the abutting room—a cozy and refined-but-rustic space rolling out cosseting dishes of buttery skate wing schnitzel. And Ocean has relaxed its environment, too. In its kitchen you’ll now find San Francisco transplant Peter Rudolph, who made his biggest mark with a Michelin star at Rosewood’s Madera Restaurant in Menlo Park—where he proved that refined food doesn’t need to mean a stuffy dining experience. He’s deploying that wisdom here with bright, fresh, and light flavors that spotlight local seafood, eaten with a direct view of the surf from whence it came. “I came to Maine for the food and the relationship with the ocean,” he says, “and the culture surrounding that relationship.”
New spots to shop
A stable of imaginative shops in Kennebunkport’s Dock Square have opened recently: Daytrip Society ’s aisles are packed with diaper bags in trippy swirl fabrics, gift wrap festooned with botanical illustrations, and picnicking supplies. Across the street, Minka presents its meticulously chosen stock of handmade vases, sustainable handbags, and downy throw blankets according to color and texture, adding sensorial layers to the shopping process. And down Ocean Avenue, Dannah —the well-established and gorgeous jumble of women’s jewelry, clothing, and body creams—has just opened Dannah For Men , a sleek setup peddling everything from retro radios and barware to loud, fun socks and button-down shirts and accessories dapper enough to have you thinking that, yes, there is indeed life beyond that eternal fixture of prepdom, the whale-print belt.
The Wanderer Cottages, 17 design-forward units, made our 2023 Hot List .
Where to stay in Kennebunkport
Blending the hip with the historic in luxurious boutique hotels is a Lark Hospitality trademark, and the company’s four new properties in old Kennebunkport sea captains homes—William Jefferds House, James Fairfield House, Acton Patterson House, and Nathaniel Lord Mansion—are paragons of that practice. Expect as many ornately carved poster beds as zebra-striped pillows, and antique portraits overlooking shag rugs and mid-century modern tables. Equally casual and creative is Goose Rocks Beach House , which opened last season with full multi-bedroom suites overlooking one of Kennebunkport’s prettiest beaches, all decked out with Frette linens, full kitchens, and complimentary beach cruiser bicycles.
For old school beach cottage appeal there’s The Wanderer , a new assemblage of 17 design-forward units that run from teensy to roomy on up to a two-bedroom house—which made Traveler 's Hot List for 2023 . And anyone familiar with the cheeky retro charm of The Yachtsman Hotel & Marina Club , Kennebunkport’s ’70’s-meets-modern luxury motel plunked on the banks of The Kennebunk River, will delight to know that it’s now winterized, updated with fireplaces, and open year-round. The better to welcome visitors to the town’s year-round festivals including Prelude, Kennebunkport’s multi-week, renowned holiday celebration.

T&C Travel Guide: The Best of Kennebunkport, Maine
From our favorite hotels to the Bush family's favorite beach, this is your ultimate guide to Kennebunkport.
If Maine is—as the state slogan proclaims—the way life should be, Kennebunkport has long been the way life would be, if only you'd been born a Bush. The town, about 30 miles south of Portland, has always been undeniably pedigreed and well-groomed, with a quaint downtown and pristine marinas full of boats, though perhaps a little too conventional, too khaki. But these days, with an influx of former urbanites and a dining scene to rival cities much larger, Kennebunkport is a destination that'll surprise native New Englanders and city folk alike. From luxe hotels to the Bush family's favorite beach—this is your ultimate guide to Kennebunkport.
Where to stay
The historic Federal mansion ( above ), recently restored by Lark Hotels and just a few blocks from downtown, is a modern B&B: in-room iPads, a boutique wine list, and bold interior design (don't miss the Vineyard Vines suite), with super-friendly innkeepers and a pulled pork egg sandwich that beats any hair of the dog.
8 Pleasant Street, (207) 967-4454
Hidden Pond
Private cottages nestled among 60 acres of birch trees aim for a "glamping" feel, with screened-in porches, outdoor showers, and a breakfast basket delivered to your door, muffins still steaming. Beach and town are a few minutes away, but the Tree Spa and on-site restaurant Earth, both of which call on produce from the resort's organic garden, make compelling reasons to stick close to camp.
354 Goose Rocks Road, (207) 967-9050
The Boathouse
Smack in the middle of town with marina access and harbor views, The Boathouse offers convenience paired with luxury, in the form of Frette linens, Malin + Goetz toiletries, and friendly service. In-house restaurant David's KPT is perfect for pre-party or nightcap, with a raw bar and creative cocktails.
21 Ocean Avenue, (207) 967-8223
Where to shop
Hurlbutt Designs
The K'port outpost ( above ) of the Kennebunk design mecca specializes in tabletop and gifts, many of them seaside-themed (and chic, not corny): sterling silver whale ice cream scoops, glass blown fisherman ornaments, knot door stoppers, and more.
50 Dock Square, (207) 204-0408
Farm + Table
An 1889 barn now houses small-batch peanut butter, heirloom aprons, hand-poured candles, and more by independent artisans from around the country. Gifts are wrapped in custom Maine-made pine boxes and, if your intended recipient is local, hand-delivered in the shop's red 1953 Ford truck.
8 Langsford Road, (207) 604-8029
Daytrip Society
The colorful and jam-packed store (and parent company to the charming Daytrip Jr. a dozen doors down) is devoted to the concept of hitting the road, with Patagonia couriers, Pendleton beach towels, Brahms Mount throws, as well as plenty of things you didn't know you needed, like the hedgehog wallet comb we couldn't leave without.
4 Dock Square, (207) 967-4440
Where to Eat
Salt & Honey
Jackson Yordon's three-year-old Dock Square restaurant, on the second floor overlooking the center of town, serves up the perfect mix of casual and refined (two words: lobster tacos). Go there for breakfast, lunch (as seen above), or dinner coupled with drinks and live music.
24 Ocean Avenue, (207) 204-0195
In an 1850s, eclectically decorated barn, owners W. Scott and Bridget Lee run a "locally sourced, globally influenced organic eatery," that's definitely a local favorite. (No less than three new friends sent us here for the egg rolls, made with blue cheese, and they were not wrong to do so.) Other standouts include: skillet steamed mussels, Vermont cheddar and cavatappi, and the spot-on, super-friendly service.
2 Ocean Avenue, (207) 967-4994
If you're looking for that famous Maine lobster, you've come to the right place. Located in the Breakwater Inn, Stripers offers "dinner with a view," and they may as well mean a view of lobster—there's lobster tacos, lobster stew, lobster cakes, and lobster poutine (and that's just for starters). The lobster tagliatelle competes with the lobster pie for the artistic win, but purists should go for the steamed Maine lobster, removed from its shell for you for just $2 more.
133 Ocean Avenue, (207) 967-3118
The White Barn Inn
Maine's top-rated Relais & Chateaux hotel also houses one of the East Coast's most acclaimed restaurants, serving up special occasion Maine-inspired fare in a converted 1820s barn with exposed beams and original wood flooring. Go for the nine-course, $165 prix-fixe menu featuring selections like Quebec foie gras, cocoa crusted lamb, and blood orange soufflé for dessert.
37 Beach Avenue, Kennebunk Beach, (207) 967-2321
Where to Drink
Old Vines Wine Bar
For a more sophisticated, though no less intoxicating, time huddle around the fire pit at Old Vines, above , which has poured Southern Maine's most extensive selection of hard to find, small-batch wines and beer since 2009. They also serve a pretty mean Maine Mai Tai (rum, dry curacao, orgeat syrup, lime, angostura bitters) and a life-saving late night menu of charcuterie and pommes frites.
173 Port Road, Kennebunk, (207) 967-2310
The best of Pedro's long list of creative margaritas—all made with Pedro's house-made sour mix—includes the tres chiles-infused Margarita en Fuego and the Margarita Prima, starring hand-squeezed orange and lime juice. Wash them down with live music on Friday nights.
181 Port Road, Kennebunk, (207) 967-5544
Federal Jack's
The waterfront views from Fed's, the original home of the Kennebunkport Brewing Company, are unbeatable, but then so is the people watching, especially on weekend nights, when a mix of fishermen, old moneyed debs, and hipstery tourists come for craft beer and live music starting at 10:30 p.m.
8 Western Avenue, Kennebunk, (207) 967-4322
Where to catch some rays—and waves
Gooch's Beach
The area's most popular beach ( above ) has it all: a long and wide coastline, active surf, lifeguards on duty, and plenty of people. Dogs are welcome before 9 a.m. and after 5 p.m.(former First Lady Barbara Bush has been spotted walking hers here). Stop by Bennett's for sandwiches and Market Day for snacks to cover all your beach picnic needs.
Beach Avenue, Kennebunk
Goose Rocks Beach
Soft white sand and mellow surf, thanks to protection from the Goose Rocks barrier reef, make this a popular spot for locals, and a lesser known option for tourists (note: there's no lifeguard on duty).
Kings Highway, (207) 967-0857
Coastal Maine Kayak & Bike
Sign up for a guided kayak or stand-up paddleboard tour to the Cape Porpoise Lighthouse or along the Kennebunk or Mousam rivers, or rent on your own and plan a personalized adventure. Bike rentals come with trail maps, and staff will gladly suggest routes for all ages and abilities.
8 Western Avenue, Kennebunk, ( 207) 967-6065
Where to be a landlubber
Vinegar Hill Music Theater
The 1887 post-and-beam barn ( above )—recently renovated to include new balcony seating boxes, a full service bar, and upgraded acoustics—plays host to musicians, authors, and comics, from Livingston Taylor to Christopher Buckley.
53 Old Post Road, Arundel, (207) 985-5552
Seashore Trolley Museum
The world's oldest and largest museum of mass transit vehicles is also one of the area's most surprisingly delightful attractions, with working trolley cars, restored horse-drawn buggies, an on-site restoration shop, and the occasional Bush family appearance. It is worthy of a rainy day visit, at the very least.
195 Log Cabin Road, (207) 967-2712

This Luxury Hotel in Maine Is in the 2024 Solar Eclipse Path of Totality — and Still Has Rooms Available
Yes, you still have time to book, but hurry.
Alessandra Amodio/Travel + Leisure
A total solar eclipse is traversing a large swatch of the United States on April 8, and if you don’t happen to already live in the path of totality, now is the perfect time to plan an eclipse getaway. And Cape Arundel Inn & Resort in Kennebunkport , Maine, is not just the ideal spot to see it, but also still has plenty of rooms available for you to choose from.
The luxury inn sits within the region of 95 percent totality , meaning the sun will be almost entirely covered by the moon for several minutes on eclipse day. And it’s celebrating this celestial event with both special programming and an eclipse package.
On eclipse day, the hotel will invite all guests to gather on its expansive front lawn from 2 p.m. onward to watch the celestial event — the eclipse will end over the area at about 4:40 p.m. The hotel will provide the all-important protective eyewear for all guests, themed cocktails and canapés to nibble on, and even a guided sound bath and meditation to make the experience feel all the more attuned to the stars above.
Beyond the event, the hotel is also offering an eclipse package , which includes a 15 percent room discount, a complimentary early check-in, access to the party, welcome amenities like a bottle of wine, and a branded journal for the wellness session. To take advantage of the package, guests must book a minimum two-night stay between April 7 and April 10.
Heidi Kirn/Courtesy of Cape Arundel Inn
Though guests may want to stay even longer, as the hotel offers all the right touches for an idyllic spring getaway in the Pine Tree State. That includes a fantastic view of the Atlantic Ocean out every window, charming rooms filled with New England-style furnishings like four-poster beds and linen chairs, and marvelous regional dining at its restaurant, Ocean, which also offers a three-, four-, or five-course prix-fixe menu along with a chef’s wine pairing.
Guests can always pair their eclipse wellness with more time at the hotel’s winter spa pop-up, which is at its Clubhouse Lounge, including an array of massages and facials. And while, yes, the inn still has space now, those rooms are not expected to last long, so make your reservations at capearundelinn.com .
Total Solar Eclipse 2024
Rates can vary widely by room type and season. "We Paid" is intended to give a general sense of price, but you might find considerably different rates for your trip.
When we book, we aim for the optimum season for the destination, but we avoid holidays and major public events, when prices are highest. We generally book a room at one category up from the most basic.
We take advantage of promotional rates, when possible. That means the rate you see above might have included other benefits, such as spa or meal credits.
White Barn Inn, Auberge Resorts Collection
- White Barn Inn is without a doubt a destination for excellence in service — the staff is simultaneously delightful, knowledgeable and efficient.
- The White Barn Inn Restaurant is a must. The Four-Star restaurant is the perfect spot for a sophisticated, New England-centric meal, crafted by culinary wizard Mathew Woolf.
- This is an intimate and quiet inn with lush bedding, large tubs and fireplaces, so bring your loved one. Families are welcome, but those with smaller children (12 and younger) are better suited in the offsite cottages.
- The sumptuous spa adds another comfy layer of relaxation with treatments like the Bath Ritual, a hydrotherapy soak in an Infinity edge tub filled with your choice of lagoon water bath pebbles or milk bath that's followed by a Swedish massage and hydrating body cream application.
- The deep sense of place is what makes White Barn Inn different from other hotels. New England oozes with charm and her rugged coastline is like no other — intoxicatingly beautiful, ever-changing with the seasons and brimming with decades of history.
- Located 1.5 hours north of Boston and 30 minutes south of Portland, Maine, White Barn Inn hugs the southern Maine coastline along a quiet stretch of the Kennebunk River.
- The luxury hotel is within minutes of the village of Kennebunk and its year-round outdoor activities, shopping, art galleries, restaurants and museums.
- Be sure to check out the Stellar Cellar Series offered on the first Saturday of every month at the idyllic inn. From cheese making to crafting the perfect cocktail, the culinary team teaches a new technique each month.
- In the main and garden buildings, most rooms are traditional in style and spacious with a queen-sized bed and roomy bathroom.
- Housed in a refurbished carriage house, May’s annex offers spacious suites.
- For maximum space and privacy, May’s cottage on the main property is a freestanding building about the size of most suites and just down the road, the inn offers four cottages along the Kennebunk River.
- A New England classic, The White Barn Inn Restaurant — the charming candlelit space inside White Barn Inn — is bedecked with fresh flowers and white linen-topped tables.
- Chef Woolf’s multi-course prix fixe menu changes weekly, highlighting seafood from Maine’s waters as well as native game and poultry.
- The vast wine selection complements the cuisine, and a rolling cheese cart offers some of the best local artisans’ products.
- The Bistro offers New England classics in a casual setting, encompassing a restored barn dating from the 1820s. It features a high-end spin on a selection of casual regional favorites such as oysters on the half shell, lobster pizza, and surf and turf.
