Classic Safari Camps

Machaba Safaris Camps In the Okavango Delta

Machaba Safaris is a small owner run safari outfit offering classic luxury tented safaris in Botswana and Zimbabwe. With three very good camps in the Okavango and one boutique lodge in Chobe, Machaba Safaris offers a classic safari experience with a perfect blend of the authenticity and luxury.

The three camps in the Okavango include Machaba Camp and Little Machaba Camp in Khwai and Gomoti Plains Camp, Gomoti Private and Kiri Camp set on a private concession (NG32) in the southern Okavango. All these camps are well located with excellent year-round game viewing opportunities, though the Gomoti Camps and Kiri camp offer a more exclusive experience. The camps are thoughtfully designed, simply but extremely stylish and always strive too keep the connection with the natural environment in which they are set.

The camps have a strong eco-friendly focus and are notable for their owner run attention to detail. Guests are encouraged to take a back-of-house tour of the camp to understand the considerable eco efforts the owners have made to mitigate any environmental impact with a number of sophisticated systems.

The latest edition to the Botswana portfolio is Ngoma Safari Lodge which was acquired in 2020. This is a boutique luxury lodge set on the quieter western side of Chobe Riverfront, offering a more exclusive Chobe safari. It is a smart, well equipped lodge with excellent views of the plains.

Established in 2012 by Alistair Rankin, Chris Hatshe and Murray Collins with the opening of the original Machaba Camp, the collection has grown to include Little Machaba, Gomoti Plains, Kiri Camp, Ngoma Safari Lodge. In Zimbabwe the collection includes Verney’s Camp in Hwange and Ingwe in Mana Pools.

Gomoti Plains Camp

Gomoti Plains Camp is a classic tented camp with a modern elegant style overlooking the Gomoti river system in a particularly scenic and game rich area of the Okavango Delta. Ten spacious and thoughtfully designed tents offer a fantastic base to explore this exciting area. This area consists of a variety of habitats, from woodland to open grasslands and wetlands attracting an interesting array of wildlife and good concentrations of animals year round. An excellent classic camp.

The latest edition to the Machaba Safaris collection, Kiri Camp in the Okavango Delta opened in June 2022. Like Gomoti Plains Camp, it lies in the NG32 private concession and offers the same superb and exclusive game viewing experience. Kiri Camp is a stylish and luxurious camp with views overlooking the Kiri channel offering game drives and mokoro rides.

Machaba Camp

Machaba camp sits below the shade of sycamore trees in a quiet corner of the game rich Khwai concession in the eastern Okavango. There is a friendly down to earth feel to this camp, offering an authentic safari with plenty of sophisticated touches to make this a spoiling experience. Stylish and thoughtfully designed rooms, excellent food and great guides come together to deliver a great all round safari.

Little Machaba Camp

Little Machaba Camp is the charming smaller sister camp to Machaba Camp, set in a scenic spot overlooking the Khwai River in the game lively Khwai concession in the east of the Okavango. This is a classic tented camp in the style of the traditional 1950’s safari, simple but sophisticated and extremely comfortable. A wonderful base from which to enjoy the excellent game viewing in the Khwai area.

Ngoma Safari Lodge

Ngoma Safari Lodge is set within the peaceful Chobe Forest Reserve, just 3km from Chobe National Park – with its infinite views over Chobe’s seasonal floodplains. A sanctuary away from the Kasane crowds, this small luxury lodge bears witness to the prolific game found along Chobe’s riverfront from its rocky height along the escarpment. Ngoma Safari Lodge offers a range of activities including game drives within Chobe National Park, boat cruises and night drives within the Forest Reserve.

Machaba Camp

Machaba Camp

About Machaba Camp

Elephants peacefully grazing the Khwai floodplains in front of Machaba conjure up something of a safari idyll.

The permanent water, fringing Moremi Game Reserve, is key to the year-round appeal of this classic tented camp, whose setting – backed by a narrow tract of woodland – attracts wildlife aplenty. Guests, too, are very much at home here. The tents are substantial, but still very much tents, their shallow porches opening straight out on to the sandy soil, with the river just beyond. This is no place for fancy decking. Instead, rush mats and oriental-style rugs are spread across the floors, topped with comfy chairs and sofas and a mix of wooden furniture to create a decidedly homely feel. While folding directors’ chairs and metal-framed beds add an authentic stamp, creature comforts are by no means lacking. The beds are huge – and supremely comfortable. Big round mirrors hang above his and hers basins in the bathrooms. White tablecloths rule in the dining area. And there’s a lovely circular pool with a view (and just a bit of decking). To wander along the sandy paths – lit at night by storm lanterns – is to accentuate the feel of the bush. That sustainability is taken seriously here is a big plus.

When to go to Moremi Game Reserve

Our month by month guide: What it's like to visit Machaba Camp in Moremi Game Reserve

Botswana in January

January is at the peak of Botswana’s rainy season. These rains are often in the evening and are short but heavy, with occasional thunderstorms. Temperatures will still be high but cooler than October–December. Animals are generally dispersed, and not easy to spot, with the best game viewing found in the north of Chief’s Island and on the eastern and southern sides of the Okavango Delta . January is also one of the best months to see the zebra and wildebeest migration in the Makgadikgadi salt pans and at Nxai Pan . Migratory birds abound throughout northern Botswana, along with a large number of breeding flamingos in the flooded salt pans. Rates are generally relatively low, making this a good time to visit on a budget.

  • Temperatures are still warm, with occasional thunderstorms
  • The bush feels alive; birdlife is at its most spectacular
  • Big game is dispersed
  • Zebra & wildebeest migration at its height
  • Availability in lodges and camps is often very good

A good time to visit, with pros & cons

Weather in January

Botswana in February

The weather in February is very similar to January, with heavy rain most days – often towards evening – and temperatures on the high side, albeit cooling off from the rains and surface water. Across northern Botswana, the landscape feels green and alive; insects and smaller animals are more easily seen, and many birds and animals are raising their young. However, the rains have created pools and waterholes in the bush and thicker vegetation and tall grass makes it trickier to spot larger animals. Further south, the game viewing is beginning to pick up in the Central Kalahari Game Reserve. Visitor numbers remain low, with attendant rates and availability in camps and lodges.

  • Temperatures still warm with occasional thunderstorms
  • Many animals with young; birdlife at its most spectacular
  • Game viewing picking up in the Central Kalahari
  • Visitor numbers are low, so camp availability can be very good

This is not a great time to visit

Weather in February

Botswana in March

March usually sees Botswana’s main rains starting to tail off. Many days will be clear, with a strong sun raising temperatures. On some days clouds will build, and the late-afternoon may see a short thunderstorm. Across the country, the landscape is green and alive. Many birds and animals are finishing raising their young. Much of the migration is now moving north towards the Savute area or Chobe National Park, though thick vegetation still makes it trickier to spot even larger animals. March is one of the best times to be in the Central Kalahari Game Reserve, where many of the pans fill up and animals come to drink, closely followed by predators. With few visitors in most areas, rates may still be relatively low.

  • Variable weather: rains tailing off but still hot
  • Occasional small thunderstorms
  • Many animals finish raising their young; birdlife still spectacular
  • The best time to visit the Central Kalahari Game Reserve
  • Few tourists visit during March, so rates often low

Weather in March

Botswana in April

During April the rains have usually stopped, though there may be still be the odd late downpour. This results in clear skies and a lovely green, lush landscape. Night-time temperatures usually start to drop during April with this being most noticeable in the Central Kalahari and the Makgadikgadi areas. The Central Kalahari is really coming into its own at this point and from April through to May/June the Savute region is a particular favourite of ours, with good predator/prey interaction. In much of northern Botswana, the camps are coming into their “shoulder” season, so rates are on the rise but still relatively low.

  • Evening temperatures cooling with just the odd shower
  • Northern Botswana is green and lush
  • Many animals still with young; good predator/prey interaction
  • Central Kalahari and Savute the best places for wildlife
  • A popular shoulder season time to book. Rates relatively low

Weather in April

Botswana in May

May is a very popular month to visit Botswana, often the last month of the “shoulder” season before camp rates hit their peak. While there is very little chance of rain, the annual floods from Angola are starting to make their way through the northern part of the Delta, and will eventually reach the majority of the Okavango late June. With cooler temperatures morning and evening, predator activity tends to be higher, although tall grasses can still obstruct game viewing. With cool crisp evenings, and the game viewing really picking up, this is the favourite time to visit for many of our team – and camp bookings throughout Botswana are snapped up quickly.

  • Cool mornings and evenings with little chance of rain
  • Game viewing is beginning to pick up
  • Predator activity increasing, though grasses still quite high
  • Last month of “shoulder” season for most camps
  • Availability goes quickly throughout Botswana

A very good time to visit

Weather in May

Botswana in June

June is the real start of the dry season. Temperatures are still cool in the morning and evenings with night-time temperatures sometimes reaching freezing, rising to 25–30 degrees Celsius during the day, with blue skies. Along with this comes a certain clarity to the air, favourable for serious photographers. Surface water and waterholes begin to dry up during this period and many animals begin to congregate around the remaining areas with water. Visibility is improving as the grass is beginning to die back, and game viewing is very good everywhere, with particular improvement in the Kwando–Linyanti areas. Not surprisingly, camp availability is becoming scarce and rates are high.

  • Warm, comfortable days; cold nights, morning & evenings
  • Air clarity favours serious photographers
  • Wildlife is gravitating to waterholes, making game-viewing productive
  • Grasses beginning to die back
  • Most camps are into peak season, with rates correspondingly high

Fantastic: the very best time to visit

Weather in June

Botswana in July

Evenings and mornings are still cool in July, and this combined with great game viewing makes it one of the most popular times to visit Botswana. Vegetation is really thinning out now making game easier to spot, with the few remaining waterholes attracting lots of wildlife. The north-eastern side of Chobe National Park, along the Chobe River, is also very rewarding, although this area can become very busy. Game viewing is extremely good in the Khwai areas, too, but again, this is a public area and – unlike in the private concessions of the Delta – vehicle numbers can be high. Camps are now very much into the peak season, and tend to be full.

  • Comfortable days; cold nights, morning & evenings
  • Game viewing very good as vegetation dies back and waterholes dry out
  • Chobe Riverfront and Khwai areas become very busy
  • Private concessions helps to avoid potentially high vehicle numbers
  • Now very much into peak season

Weather in July

Botswana in August

August is a popular time to visit Botswana, coinciding with the European summer holidays, and camp availability is difficult. Temperatures are generally cool at night, and comfortable during the day, although towards the end of the month they can rise above 35 degrees Celsius (albeit with low humidity). Cloudless skies bring spectacular star-gazing. Wildlife has congregated around the few remaining water sources, and much of the vegetation has now died back, so wildlife viewing tends to be varied and rewarding, particularly in the Okavango Delta. Depending on the rains in Angola this can also be one of the best times to see the delta floods at their peak.

  • Dry, warm days, with mainly cool nights
  • Cloudless skies with spectacular stars at night
  • A fantastic time for wildlife watching, particularly in the Okavango
  • Traditionally one of the best times to see the Delta in full flood
  • Peak season: so high rates and many lodges full

Weather in August

Botswana in September

September is another favourite month for some of our team members. Daytime temperatures are getting warmer, but nights remain cool. With the drier conditions, most of the greenery has faded from the landscape, and dust or even smoke create hazy conditions that aren’t great for photographers – though this does result in fantastic sunsets. This is another extremely good month for game viewing, with large numbers of elephant and buffalo congregating in the Chobe region and migrant birds begin to return to Botswana. Rates remain high – and availability correspondingly low.

  • Warmer days and cool nights
  • One of the best months for wildlife viewing
  • Large congregations of elephant & buffalo in the Chobe region
  • Hazy conditions less good for photographers, but brilliant sunsets
  • High season rates; many lodges & camps are full

Weather in September

Botswana in October

October is the one of the hottest months of the year, and usually one of the driest. Towards the end of the month the chances of rain can increase, and along with this can come greater humidity. The air is usually dry and hazy, making photography more challenging, but the lack of water and vegetation result in very good big-game viewing. Water levels are now much lower, so water-based activities such as boating, mokoro trips and fishing cease in many of the camps which are not on major tributaries.

  • Hot temperatures, with the chance of rain towards the end of the month
  • Great big-game viewing
  • Less opportunity for water activities in camps as floods recede
  • Hazy air not great for photographers
  • Final month of the peak season in camps

Weather in October

Botswana in November

November usually marks the end of the dry season in Botswana, when increasing temperatures drive a rise in humidity, sometimes culminating in the first rains. These are often short but very heavy showers in the late afternoon or during the night, and can be spectacular. The rains lower the temperatures slightly but bring a flush of green back into the dry landscapes. As waterholes in surrounding areas fill, wildlife will gradually begin to disperse as it is not restricted by the availability of water. November is a great time for birdwatching, with the arrival of many migrant birds. The first couple of weeks are very popular with travellers looking for great game viewing at lower rates as Botswana enters the “shoulder” season.

  • Hot in the middle of the day; sometimes humid
  • Heavy showers increasingly likely as the month progresses
  • Wildlife watching still good, but less reliable once it rains
  • Migrant birds start to arrive
  • “Shoulder” season brings mid-range rates in camps

Weather in November

Botswana in December

The rains in Botswana have now started, bringing some respite to the high temperatures. Game viewing becomes harder as wildlife is more dispersed but great sightings can still be had in the right areas such as Khwai and the Kwara and Mombo concessions. Areas such as the Makgadikgadi Pans change completely with the salt pans becoming covered in a shallow layer of water attracting large numbers of breeding flamingos. Low-season rates at many camps are a draw.

  • Temperatures starting to fall from the highs of October/November
  • Very high chance of rain, usually large heavy storms for short periods
  • Flamingos return to breed at the Makgadikgadi Pans
  • Wildlife more dispersed, so game viewing more challenging
  • Typically low-season rates in the camps

Safari Lifestyles View

Machaba Camp is newly built in late 2012.  The camp site in a beautiful riverine area that has very good reputations for game.

The Khwai community concession sits right on the border with the Moremi Game Reserve and as there are no fences to the reserve itself and the wildlife flows freely between the two areas.

Wildlife sightings here have been tremendous over that last few years with regular sighting of resident lion, leopard and packs of wild dogs that often den here. The camp itself is beautifully done in an "old school" style where the whole lodge is tent based and the accommodations are to very high standard. This is the kind of lodge which takes you back in time a little and seems less fussy than most. Sitting in probably the best area of Khwai and right on the Khwai River itself, your down time at the lodge between activities can sometimes be the best viewpoint for wandering animals.

Activities here are excellent, day and night drives are available as is the ability to go off-road to follow elusive leopards.

Safari Lifestyles really likes this camp and feel that its well priced considering the area it is in, the experiences offered and the quality of the accommodation.... in fact, it is currently our favourite camp in Botswana..!!

Wildlife & Activities

The wildlife viewing is generated around similar species to that of the general Oakavango Delta. In and around Khwai you can see general plains game such as elephant, impala, zebra and wildebeest sable antelope with great concentrations of lion, leopard and hyena. In recent seasons there have also been good numbers of wild dogs and some occasional cheetah.

The more aquatic animals like hippo, waterbuck and red lechwe are generally always seen depending on the area visited.

Birdlife is also strong and concentrates on the main river area where lovely flocks of pygmy goose and white-faced ducks mingle with spur-winged goose, comb ducks and African Jacanas.

NIGHT DRIVES

Camp Overview

Machaba Camp is situated in the game rich Khwai area, on the eastern tongue of the Okavango Delta. The name Machaba is the local Setswana name for the Sycamore Fig Tree, the tree of life. The Machaba tree abounds in the Okavango Delta and most African riverine forests.

Machaba trees are renowned for their abundant fruit, which feed a vast array of animals throughout the year, including elephant, baboons, bush buck, green pigeons and many more.

The camp is built in the classic 1950's style, with luxury safari tents, en-suite bathrooms and living areas, not forgetting the romantic outdoor showers. All the tents are situated on the ground and the pathways to the tents meander between the large riverine trees

Lodge Layout

All 10 luxury tents are situated in the beautiful riverine tree line on the Khwai River, overlooking the famous Moremi Game Reserve. From these tented verandas one can watch the daily parade of animals coming down to drink at the river in front of camp.

You arrive at camp at its entrance and only then do you begin to understand how thick the area is with trees. Probably not even having seen the Khwai River on the way in, you walk to the main entrance of the communal area. sonstructed beautifully in grey canvas in a slightly Aarabic style, the lounge is to your left and the dining area to the right. In front of you is a large and raised sandy area where safari chairs and a campfire await for your relaxation. in the middle of this sandy ledge is the big Machaba tree, form here you are right on the Khwai River with its stunning views... we know this camp well and much game activity can be seen from this vantage point.

The lounge is awash with an array comfortable sofas, wooden chairs, cabinets, lamps, glassware and African bric-a-brac, all very tastefully chosen to be an eclectic mix of old and modern.... the effect is very pleasing and one which sits perfectly within this very simple structure.

The dining area is again very furnished with table with crisp white cloth and expensive glassware. Cooked English breakfasts are prepared right before you on a small kitchenette at the end of this area

To one end of the camp, past the last tent is a good sized swimming pool with wooden decking and sun-loungers under umbrellas... the pool looks right over the river and its not unusual to have elephant feeding close by.

Overall, its a delightful place to spend time in.

Room Description

The room are all fanned out either side of the main lodge and all have views over the Khwai River and are secluded enough from each other being set in quite thick bush.

For the daily rate of this camp, the rooms are some of the best in Botswana. They are quite cavernous in size and made from grey canvas and steel poles. Each tent as standard has a small seating area outside with chairs for you to relax in and a table and a canvas washbasin to wash you hands in. Through a large zipped doorway (in traditional African bush camp style) you are led into the main area comprising of a large room with a very large "campaign" style steel bed. Grass matting covers most of the floor and there is a lovely writing table, lamp and chair together with a beautiful soft armchair.

A canvas slipway to the rear leads you to the large ablution area with unusually designed his and hers wash basins with his and hers leather-clad hanging mirrors. Also in this area is a good sized internal shower and toilet. There is also a doorway that leads to a lovely and unique outside shower... unique as in the shower's effect is that it passes through a bucket... those of us who travel to the bush often, know exactly what a bucket shower is!

Camp Environment

The camp sits right on the Khwai River in the Khwai Community Concession on the border of the Moremi Game Reserve.

This area is deemed to be a public concession and is of outstanding beauty, delivering the same reputation as Moremi, in that the diversity of game and vegetation is shared. Much smaller in size, its real benefit is accessibility and differences in accommodation, which is mostly more affordable in terms of its lodges and its suitability for Mobile Safaris and Self Drivers.

Machaba Camp sits in a very thick area right on the river in the concession, our view is that it holds the best spot of any lodge. Pretty much every lodge maintains the policy of guiding guests back their tent in darker hours, none more so important as at Machaba as there are many predators in the area and the thick bush makes them harder to spot.

This 7-night Safari in Botswana Is All About Wildlife, Water, and Sustainability — Here's What It Was Like to Visit

The Okavango Delta creates a safari landscape like no other.

machaba safaris botswana

Courtesy of Wilderness Safaris

Less than an hour after landing at a remote airstrip, we're having sundowners en route to the lodge. A troop of dozens — perhaps a hundred — baboons returns to the trees around us to roost for the night. A nosy kudu slowly circles our makeshift camp. Chatty squirrels chitter away in the branches above our heads. We sip our gin and tonics and watch as the Okavango Delta settles into dusk. So it goes on safari in Botswana.

We hop back into the jeep and make for Vumbura Plains, our home for the next few nights, passing elephants under trees and lechwe antelope spread across the flooded plains. But interestingly, it's not the wildlife that captivates me on the ride. It's the water.

The Okavango Delta is a sprawling inland delta, and each winter, floodwaters from the Okavango River inundate some three million acres of grassland and desert. It creates a vast waterscape that not only draws human visitors like me but plenty of animal ones, too. So as we're driving to the lodge, my heart stops as the road disappears into the waters — and I hold my breath as we plunge right in. "You might want to pick up that bag," our Wilderness guide Dave Luck says to me as the water gurgles beneath the floor of the jeep, seeping in through the crevices.

The floodwaters aren't very deep, though, and the local guides know where the roads twist and turn, even if I can't see anything through the murk. It's a surreal feeling to be navigating these waters in a jeep rather than on a boat.

We arrive at Vumbura Plains , and there's plenty more water to be found here. The camp was newly rebuilt in 2022 and now has a series of 14 open-air suites connected by elevated wooden walkways. I sit in my sunken living room adorned with water-lily motifs, and even though it's after dark, I can hear wildlife wading through the water all around me.

The water remains a source of intrigue for me during our stay at Vumbura Plains, perhaps even more so as we take to the skies in a helicopter. From our aerial vantage point, I can see just how expansive the floodwaters are — and how filled they are with wildlife. Water-loving hippos and crocodiles are spread across the saturated plains, while elephants march single-file through the reeds, creating meandering pathways visible from the air.

Our next adventure takes us away from the floods, in the Linyanti Concession, where the eight-room DumaTau camp becomes our next home. There is water here, too, as the lodge sits on a riverfront that's very popular with elephants. In fact, one waltzes right past my tented suite as I'm reclining for an afternoon nap.

On one of our game drives across the dry terrain, we see dozens of vultures perched on every tree within eyesight. And that means one thing: dinner is served. (Not ours, of course, but lions'.)

As we make our way through the tall, rustling grass, we spot a few lounging lionesses and their playful cubs. Then the smell hits us: it's a slightly putrid buffalo, one that the lions have been feasting on for some time. One lioness is polishing off its exposed ribs, her strong teeth tearing into the flesh and peeling it straight off the bone. Dave hands me a small tin filled with a fragrant salve. "For the smell," he notes, rubbing some under his nose. The trick works wonders, and we continue our observations of the feast.

You might think such a sight (and odor) might deter us from our own dinner back at DumaTau, but the cuisine at this camp is too delectable to pass up. The food system, as the printed menu tells me, is responsible for some 30 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions. So Wilderness designs "mindful menus" here, incorporating locally sourced, sustainable ingredients into its dishes to reduce its "foodprint." What's more, food waste is minimized by the kitchen's upcycling team, which turns scraps into preserves, pickles, and stocks. Nothing goes to waste in nature, and so it shall be at Wilderness camps, too.

Our final leg of the safari takes us back to the Okavango Delta, this time to the camp Jao. And here, I'm awestruck at the architecture. Jao feels like a movie set. It's a series of striking, modern tree houses that blend natural elements with high design and sustainable engineering. (The thatch, for instance, is actually made from recycled plastic.)

The room that really takes my breath away is the double-height library and wine room, at the center of which is a giraffe skeleton. Jao is equal parts futuristic and classic safari, and it's certainly a feast for the eyes.

We return to watery adventures in the delta, but not in jeeps. One afternoon, we take a more traditional form of transportation: a hand-carved mokoro canoe. Skilled gondoliers use long poles to propel us through the floodwaters, pausing at points to teach us about the flora of the region. We make necklaces out of water lilies and wear them proudly as we glide through the reeds.

On our last night in Botswana, the staff prepares us a beautiful sundowner send-off — a massive spread arranged on my suite's terrace surrounding a fire pit. As we watch the light fade over the water, we once more sip on our gin and tonics, the sights and sounds of our trip shining brightly in our memories.

A seven-night, three-camp Bucket List Botswana safari with Wilderness starts at $12,120 per person; book your trip at wildernessdestinations.com .

I've had the pleasure of staying at Machaba (5 years ago) with a large group and recently at Little Machaba with a few friends. The location, set up, and staff at Little Machaba is intimate and second to none. The very genuine and caring staff made us feel like we were family staying in their home. The hostess and staff provided top service by fulfilling each request and creating surprise experiences from a morning mokoro to brunch in the bush. I'm so happy you had great sightings and sounds magical. Thank you for choosing Machaba Safaris for your Botswana adventure.

We saw a lot of animals including lions, wild dogs, a honey badger, a wild cat, as well as many kind of birds. We were only the guest during our whole stay and really relaxed and enjoyed our stay. Some animals such as hippos, buffalos, and antelopes visited our tent.

Absolutely fantastic experience! Machaba camp is ran by a family and this is reflected in the whole atmosphere. The management and staff go above and beyond to make one feel welcome and at home. The service is impeccable and the guides are extremely knowledgeable. When you're not enjoying the fantastic meals and service in the camps, you're being guided to amazing wildlife sightings while being provided with in depth knowledge about the environment. The activities include walking safaris, boat (and mokoro) rides and even helicopter flights. A true 5 star experience in a place that isn't intrusive to it's surroundings. HIGHLY recommended

Thank you for taking the time to write that lovely review and give us feedback. I am very happy to know you had an amazing experience at Machaba Camp. Thank you for choosing us for your safari :)

We came to Machaba camp in July because the camp we've originally booked in Kwai river was closed because of COVID. So it was a bit of surprise to land in the camp we knew nothing of. And what a fantastic surprise, semi-rigid tents make you feel like in old days "out of Africa", they are though perfectly safe, with wooden floor, immense windows all around, outdoor bath tube under a tree, so romantic. An exquisite taste and discret luxury that makes you feel home, not like some other pretentious places in Okavango area for bling-bling guests. The pool is rather size of jacuzzi but refreshing and calm. The Staff is discrete, efficient and helpful, the guide flexible. One night several lions had a roar meeting 100 meters from our tent, it was a thrilling experience to be awaken by their conversations, next day we could see their foot prints all over the place we usually took a safari car. The staff was smiling and confirmed that "yes, they were close and many". Sylwia from Geneva

Thank you for the amazing feedback, we are so excited to hear that several lions were around your tent and gave you such a thrilling experience as this is such a special spot in the Delta. Our staff are fantastic their enthusiasm and passion exudes through everything they do. Thank you for choosing us for your Botswana adventure and that we could make your visit truly memorable, we really look forward to welcoming you back in the near future at one of our Machaba Camps.

Machaba Safaris Machaba Camp Lion

on Apr 6, 2024

Botswana - Okavango Delta - Machaba Camp

Machaba camp wildlife sightings march 2024.

Throughout March, we endured a series of heat waves, without the relief of any rainfall. The latter half of the month brought some relief in the form of cooler nights, with temperatures dipping to a cooler 13 degrees Celsius. The river's water level plummeted significantly under the sun's warmth, causing the once-lush grass to wither into a dry, brown hue. Despite this desolation, the riverbanks became a haven for numerous elephants, who sought relief in the succulent riverine grasses during the sweltering afternoons.

Machaba Camp Okavango Delta

Surprise Hyenas!

After our guests checked in one afternoon they immediately left for the afternoon drive with smiles all over their faces. We started slow as everything was new and exciting. Along the riverfront road leading to a crossing better known as the ‘first drinking spot’, we noticed a buzz of activity from the game in the area.   There had been lions spotted near Magotlho, so our guide Moss decided to get there from the eastern side. To our absolute surprise and delight were two hyenas mating. We spent a long time watching as the guests were so enamored with the hyenas' behavior.

Lions At Last

On a hot afternoon, Bt and his guests braved the scorching sun to embark on a search for lions which his guests had longed to see the moment they arrived in camp. Leaving camp, we took the riverfront road leading to Babra. We saw vultures hovering over a dry leadwood tree. A dense thicket of Kalahari apple trees covered the stem of the leadwood tree. We used binoculars to scan the area and in a flash, two female lions came out of that thicket at full speed chasing a black-backed jackal. The guests were excited and amazed at the same time. A growling sound was heard coming from the thicket, Bt drove around the thicket on the eastern side where four female lions and a male lion were found feeding on a zebra carcass. It was getting late before we left the scene with many questions from the guests about what happened to the jackal that was chased by the two lions.

Machaba Camp Lion Kill

A Tired Leopard

It was a warm morning when Moss and his guests decided to slow down and appreciate Mother Nature. They drove around Leopard Lagoon before heading towards the Magotlho area. The general game was in abundance with elephants and other animals congregating along the riverbank to have a morning drink before heading back into the bush. As we were watching this spectacular sighting that looked like a scene from the  Massai Mara animal migration, an alarm call from impalas and squirrels was heard coming out of the south. As our guide Moss turned his head he set his eyes on a leopard that looked tired from an unsuccessful hunting mission. The leopard walked close to the vehicle, lay down on the ground, and started licking its wounds. When the leopard moved off we followed until it reached a narrow river crossing. It galloped like an impala, pronking across the river into the Moremi Game Reserve to the amazement and excitement of the guests.

Some Privacy Please

On a beautiful and hot afternoon, we were driving around Dolar Lagoon when we suddenly decided to change direction towards the hyena den though it was not the right time to find them in their den. We drove westwards and connected to the road to our Mokoro station. On that road we spotted two leopard tracks going up north and tracked them with the hope of seeing them, unfortunately, the tracks went into a bushy thicket. We then followed the road and later saw the tracks rejoining the road. We continued tracking them and to our delight, found them mating near the Mokoro station. The honeymooners were at ease and did not seem bothered by the presence of the onlookers. We have had some beautiful, albeit hot weather in March and some incredible sightings that our guests will not soon forget. We are however looking forward to the cooler temperatures of Autumn and all the wildlife encounters that come with it! Until next time, Linguist Machaba Camp
