Guinea’s military ruler, Colonel Doumbouya, visits neighbouring Sierra Leone. Here’s why
Guinea’s military ruler, Colonel Mamady Doumbouya, is on a diplomatic visit to neighbouring Sierra Leone.
The colonel was received in Freetown by Sierra Leone’s president, Julius Maada Bio who promised to strengthen the ties between the two countries.
“It is an honour for me to come and see my brother Bio, because he is the first president who came to visit us when we took power on 5 September ( 2021, Ed. ), on 11 October President Bio was already in Conakry.
“That was a testimony of the friendship, the brotherhood between the Republic of Guinea and the Republic of Sierra Leone. And we will work further on this, to strengthen once again our ties of cooperation, brotherhood, and friendship”, affirmed Doumbouya.
Also commenting, President Julius Bio, reiterated that “Guinea and Sierra Leone, we are not (just) neighbours, we are so related that it is difficult to draw a boundary between us. But that is what happened after colonialism, the ‘scramble for Africa’. So we have to keep this relationship between our two countries, and basically, that’s what we are doing.”
Relations with Sierra Leone have long been good, even though there is an ongoing minor border dispute over the ownership of the village of Yenga, situated near the border between the 2 countries, and an associated dispute over the exact boundary, which lies on the course of the Makona river.

Uganda: Museveni’s son newly appointed as military chief to fight corruption
Fighting corruption in the military will be a top priority for Uganda’s military chief— son of veteran president Yoweri Museveni.
Muhoozi Kainerugaba, who was recently appointed by his father in a move widely expected to accelerate his rise to eventually succeed him, made the statement at a formal handover ceremony on Thursday.
Kainerugaba “vowed to improve the welfare of soldiers by fighting the evil of corruption and mismanagement of resources”, according to a statement released by the military.
Despite Ugandan regulations prohibiting serving military commanders from entering politics, Kainerugaba regularly engages in political sparring with opposition politicians and has established a pressure group that has been mobilizing political backing for him, earning him condemnation from both sides.
His military career was expedited, according to Uganda’s opposition, in order to position him to assume political power but his has denied that he is being prepared for president.
The Ugandan military is heavily involved in maintaining regional stability and has contingents fighting Islamist insurgents in Somalia and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
He has being controversial with some of his stance and once once threatened to invade neighbouring Kenya. Kainerugaba has also praised Russian President Vladimir Putin after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, later said the threats were a joke.
The electoral commission released the roadmap for the 2026 polls expected to cost Ush1.3 trillion ($354.8 million) last year but opposition leaders including Dr Kizza Besigye, Robert ‘Bobi Wine’ Kyagulanyi and other politicians in Parliament, have argued that this is an exercise in futility if there is no holistic electoral reforms before then.
South Africa: Opposition Democratic Alliance open to coalition with ruling ANC
The Democratic Alliance (DA), the second-most popular party in South Africa, has revealed that it would not rule out a compromise with the ruling African National Congress (ANC).
The DA says it will consider the move if the ANC does not get the necessary majority to maintain its hold on power in the May elections.
The May 29 election might prove to be the biggest test yet for Nelson Mandela’s former party which has ruled South Africa since the end of white minority rule thirty years ago. Voters dissatisfied with inadequate service delivery, unemployment, crime, and power outages might cause the ANC to lose its legislative majority according to pollsters.
Another bottleneck for the ANC is the factional division it has suffered with former President Jacob Zuma’s political base out of the party, having created the uMkhonto weSizwe (Spear of the Nation). In that case, as the president of South Africa is chosen by the parliament, neither President Cyril Ramaphosa nor a replacement for the position could hold onto power without the support of a coalition.
“It would depend on which ANC you’re dealing with and what their programme of action is,” DA leader John Steenhuisen said, declining to disclose whether any talks had already taken place.
“I’m not ruling out anything, depending on what the election results are.”
Meanwhile, Nomvula Mokonyane, the ANC’s deputy party secretary, informed reporters earlier this month that the party was not thinking about forming a coalition government with other parties and that she did not believe a power-sharing agreement would succeed.
To garner the majority of votes required to win government, the Democratic Alliance has united with smaller parties. These include the longtime ANC bitter rival, the Zulu nationalist Inkatha Freedom Party; additionally, Action SA, which has developed a platform based on a strong anti-immigration stance and appeals to working- and middle-class voters; and Freedom Front Plus, which targets rural white South Africans who feel politically marginalized since apartheid.
While the EFF is well-liked among low-income Black South Africans, companies and the rich view the DA as a party that supports business. The EFF pledges to address land ownership disparities and nationalize industries.
“It’s a long shot,” Steenhuisen said. He added that if the opposition coalition did not win, his priority would be to prevent the Marxist Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) from getting a seat on the executive.
“What I call the ‘doomsday coalition’ … is a tie-up between the EFF and the ANC,” he said.
