Check out two Mestalla Stadium reviews we selected from Tripadvisor, which give you an idea of what to expect at this attraction.

Great tour guide

I took the 1.30 tour, and there were only five of us. The others were Spanish, so we effectively got a private tour. The guide was friendly and made it interactive with facts about the stadium, history, etc. It was a really good experience, and I was pleased we went.

Karen90, Tripadvisor

Excellent tour

Very good tour of a great and traditional football ground. It may be old but very atmospheric. The excellent tour guide, Adrian, obviously loves his club. There is a beautiful reception area under the main stand with original tiling and a small but excellent museum.

Valencia Football Stadium Tours and Football Breaks

Valencia CF was founded in 1919 by people involved in the business of exporting citrus fruits from the region. They played their first competitive match in 1921 at the Algirós stadium before moving to their current home of Mestalla in 1923. Initially the club played in a regional league before being admitted into the newly formed Spanish Second Division for the 1928-29 season. Three years later they were promoted to the top tier of Spanish football. Valencia football stadium tours are a great way for visitors to the city to learn about the history of one of Spain’s greatest clubs.

Table of Contents

In 1941 Valencia won their first Copa del Rey title followed by their first La Liga title in 1942. They established themselves as one of Spain’s top clubs in the 1940s and 1950s under the management of Jacinto Quincoces. The club endured a dry spell during the 1960s and 1970s but returned to prominence after the signing of Mario Kempes in 1976. Kempes helped Valencia win the Copa del Rey in 1979 and the La Liga title in 1971-72.

The 1980s saw Valencia win two more Copas del Rey as well as the European Cup Winners’ Cup in 1980. In the 1990s, they added another Cup title and celebrated their centenary in 1999 by qualifying for the Champions League for the first time. They won La Liga in 2001-02 and 2003-04 under Rafael Benítez and went on to win the UEFA Cup and Super Cup and reach two successive Champions’ League finals.

In the 2010s Valencia continued to consistently qualify for the Champions League but struggled to advance past the round of 16. In 2014 the club was taken over by Singaporean businessman Peter Lim who has overseen a long period of instability which has seen many managers come and go. Whilst remaining competitive the club has never been close to the heights of the early 2000s and has just a single Copa del Rey title from the 2018-19 season to show for their efforts.

Valencia Football Stadiums (1919-2024)

Algirós stadium.

Valencia CF played at the Algirós Stadium from 1919-1923 which had an estimated capacity of around 5,000 spectators.

Mestalla Stadium

The home of Valencia CF hosted its first match in 1923 against Levante FC in front of 17,000 spectators seated in wooden stands. The first major upgrade of the Campo de Mestalla came in 1934 when a second tier was added, raising capacity to 45,000. This figure reached 70,000 in the 1990s but was reduced to 49,500 after the stadium’s most recent renovation was completed in 2011. After 100 years of history, Mestalla’s days may be numbered but its rich history will live forever in the annals of Valencia CF.

Nou Mestalla Stadium

Construction of this new 75,000 seater stadium, which was meant to replace Mestalla, was stopped in 2009 due to Spain’s financial crisis and Valencia CF’s lack of funds. Today, this half-built stadium stands as a monument to the club’s failings under the current ownership. The club did announce plans to restart construction of the new Valencia football stadium with its capacity reduced to just 49,000 seats but no such progress has taken place. At the moment it is impossible to know when or if Nou Mestalla will ever be completed. In the meantime Valencia CF continue to play their home matches at the historic Mestalla stadium.

Valencia Football Stadium Tours

The Mestalla Forever Tour is a fascinating stadium tour of Valencia CF’s historic Mestalla Stadium . The tour begins outside the stadium with guides providing an overview of Mestalla’s design and history. Visitors then enter the stadium through the players’ tunnel to emerge on the side of the pitch. The tour then proceeds up to the press boxes, VIP suites and the zone where post-match interviews are held. You also get a glimpse of the changing rooms but these remain off-limits to the general public.

Fans can then ascend into the stands for panoramic views of the pitch and end the Mestalla Forever Tour at the Valencia CF museum which is filled with historic club memorabilia. The standard tours last around an hour and fifteen minutes with tickets needing pre-booking online. The Mestalla stadium tour is a great way to learn about the arena’s illustrious past and is highly recommended for any football supporter visiting the city.

Valencia Football Fixtures 2023-24

How to get valencia football tickets.

You can order Valencia football tickets online from the Valencia CF official website. There are usually tickets available for most matches but they tend to be sold out for games against Real Madrid and FC Barcelona. The website is fairly self-explanatory, simply select “Entradas” next to the game you want to attend then change the language to English at the top of the page. You can then select your preferred seats which are shown in green on the website view.

You then have 10 minutes to complete the booking. When completing the booking process you will see a box asking for a DNI. This is a Spanish identification number. Fans from other countries should simply enter their passport number as identification. Once the booking is complete the tickets will be sent to you by email and should be printed out before going to the stadium.

Valencia FC Kick-Off Times

Unlike the other major football associations of Europe the Spanish FA only announce the confirmed day and time of matches about 7 to 10 days before they are due to be played. Of course this can cause some concern for fans who are taking a city break to Valencia but in most cases this is rarely an issue provided that you’re in Valencia from Saturday afternoon until Monday. Once official confirmation of kick-off times is announced at the Spanish FA it is published on the Valencia CF website .

Valencia Football Stadium Guide

Getting to the mestalla stadium.

Known as the Campo de Mestalla, the Valencia football stadium is very close to the city centre. You can take a taxi or number 10 bus from the Plaza del Ayuntamiento to Aragón which is very close to the stadium. Alternatively, use the small underground system departing from Xàtiva (outside the main Estació del Nord) and take the green line number 5 to the stop nearest the stadium at Aragón.

A new piece of history at the Mestalla Forever Tour

mestalla tour forever

The Mestalla Forever Tour has a new piece on display, specifically on the top floor of the Mestalla VIP Box, which turns 100 years old on May 20, 2023.

It is the model of the stadium renovation project, then Luis Casanova, from the late 70s and aimed at preparing the pitch to meet the conditions required for the 82 World Cup held in Spain.

To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video

Now, the piece, recovered by the collector Pepe Roca and donated by him to the Club, has been restored by the Heritage Restoration Institute of the Universitat Politècncia de València in collaboration with the VCF Foundation's Patrimonial Department - VCF Museum.

Thanks to the joint work of all parties, an important piece has been recovered for the enjoyment of all Valencians.

Mestalla, Valencia FC’s historic home

Information

The Mestalla stadium, the oldest stadium of any of the football teams in the Spanish First Division , is the stage on which the story of Valencia FC has been played out. This is where the fans of this team have trembled with nerves and excitement whilst witnessing the players in their different coloured kits sweat it out on the pitch, and football history has been written. Situated between the Avinguda de Suècia and the Avinguda d’Aragó in the Valencian capital, the Mestalla stadium has, since it was inaugurated on 20th May 1923, been expanded, and currently has capacity for 55,000 spectators.

Would you like to find out about the secrets and quirks of this nearly 100-year-old club? We’re going to share a few here, but we also suggest that you pay a trip to the stadium and sign up to the Mestalla Forever Tour. You’ll see the press room, the changing rooms, and you’ll even get to emerge onto the pitch through the tunnel, whilst being regaled with the history of Valencia FC, and all the best anecdotes.

Daily tours of the Mestalla stadium

There are tours of the Mestalla stadium every day of the week. From Monday to Saturday, you can choose between morning tours (10:30 AM to 1:30 PM) or afternoon tours (3:30 PM to 6:15 PM) of the inside of the stadium. On Sundays, there are only morning tours. When there are matches on, they still run tours, but the timings might be changed and you won’t be taken to the changing rooms, for organisational reasons.

During the guided tour you’ll discover why Valencia’s football stadium is called Mestalla. It got its name from the old stream that flowed past the southern side of the stadium and was called Mestalla. However, between the years 1969 and 1994, the stadium changed its name to Estadi Luís Casanova, in tribute to the well-loved Luís Casanova Giner, who’s considered one of the club’s best presidents, as well as having been the driving force behind the transformation of the stadium in the 1950s. In 1994 he himself asked that the name be changed back to Mestalla.

Mestalla Forever Tour

What route will the Mestalla Forever Tour take you on? We’re going to explain it below, as visually as possible. You’ll visit the VIP box, the VIP stands, the trophy room, the fan balcony, the ‘black and white corner’, the anteroom and the press room, the home team changing rooms, the changing room tunnel, the players’ tunnel, the bench , the chapel, the referee’s changing room, the medical centre and, lastly, the official Valencia FC shop where, if you like, you can take your own Valencian ‘trophy’ home. The Mestalla Forever Tour costs €10.90 for adults and €8.50 for concessions. Children under 4 years old get in free.

To understand the history of Mestalla, home of Valencia FC, we need to start at the very beginning. Let’s turn the clock back to 1923, when a friendly match between two local teams, Valencia and Levante, marked the beginning of the story of the Mestalla Stadium. It was the start of a new era that left the old pitch, Camp d’Algirós , the club’s first home, behind. At the time the team wasn’t in the First Division, but the stadium had capacity for 17,000 spectators, who saw the clear potential their team had to perform well in regional championships.

First remodelling of Mestalla

Just a few years later, in 1927, the stadium was remodelled for the first time with the aim of expanding its capacity to 25,000 people. However, those changes weren’t to last long, as during the Spanish Civil War its structure was seriously damaged. It was used as a concentration camp and junk heap and only the skeleton was preserved. The interior was left as what was essentially an empty plot of land, with no stands and a cracked podium.

Once the war ended, the Valencian stadium was recovered, and the team won its first title: the Cup of 1941. In the 1940s, they went on to win three league titles and two cups. It was then that Valencian stadium went through its most significant change, the result being capacity for 45,500 spectators. During those difficult times, no one could’ve dreamed of such a magnificent stadium. But the dream didn’t last long, as in October 1957 the River Túria broke its banks, and the flood seriously affected the stadium.

Mestalla en un partido del Valencia F.C.

Thankfully, the home of Valencia FC recovered quickly and not only got back to normal, but even went on to introduce electric light to the field during the Falles festival of 1959. During the 1960s, the stadium was practically unchanged, but that wasn’t the case for the neighbourhood, also called Mestalla, that started to transform quickly. It wasn’t long until the stadium started to host big European matches. Nottingham Forest was the first foreign team to face ‘ che ’, a nickname for Valencia FC, in an official match at Mestalla. That was on the 15th September 1961.

Di Stéfano on the bench

At the beginning of the 1970s, the local team was the home of none other than Alfredo di Stéfano. The Valencian team made its début in the European Cup and the UEFA Cup. In 1972 the club’s head office was inaugurated, with the trophy room presided over by the club’s original flag. In 1978, Mestalla was remodelled once again, with sights set on the World Cup of 1982. It was at that time that Valencia FC had a player amongst its ranks who many consider to be the best footballer in the world: Mario Alberto Kempes , who helped the team win the Copa del Rey, the Recopa and the UEFA Super Cup titles.

Mestalla was also chosen as the setting for Spain’s first World Cup in 1982 and has been graced by players as iconic as Maradona and Pelé, as well as Kempes. Many tournaments and international matches have been played out on Mestalla’s pitch, which has also hosted lots of finals of La Copa.

But Mestalla is, above all, the home of Valencia’s supporters, at least until the new stadium, the “New Mestalla” or “Nou Mestalla” is built. The plans are for it to be erected on the Avinguda de les Corts Valencianes .

Mestalla is an attraction that’s nearly 100 years old, a stadium that has housed one of the most relevant clubs in the history of Spanish football, and it is well worth paying it a visit.
