Deemed as the highest mountain in the Visayas mainland, Mt. Kanlaon majestically stands in Negros Island, the 4th largest island in the Philippines. Its peak stands 2,435 meters above sea level. Mt. Kanlaon is under Trail Class 4 with up to 4 days climb, according to Pinoy Mountaineer .

Mt. Kitanglad is the 4th highest mountain in the country. It is among the protected natural landscapes and hiking spots in the Philippines. As one of the top 5 tallest mountains in the Philippines, Mt. Kitanglad boasts a summit with an elevation of 2,899 meters above sea level in Bukidnon province, the Food Basket of Mindanao.

Mt. Kitanglad Range National Park is one of the few remaining flourishing rainforests in the Philippines. As a biodiversity haven, it is home to the rarest plant and animal species, including the Philippine Eagle. Being one of the abundant landscapes in the region, it also serves as the headwater of the three main river systems in Mindanao.

For its hiking specs, Mt. Kitanglad has a major climb classification with a difficulty rating of 6/9 and a trail class between 2 to 4 based on the Pinoy Mountaineer guide. Despite having well-established terrains, the path going up is extremely challenging, and only the most veteran hikers can surpass it.

6. Mt. Dulang-dulang (Bukidnon) 

Tucked within the Kitanglad Mountain Range is another breathtaking peak in the country with a beautiful mountain view on top. Mt. Dulang-dulang, the 2nd highest mountain in the Philippines, rises 2,938 meters above sea level. It possesses dense forests covered with thick moss and fog.

Emerging from the lush rainforests are a variety of landscapes, tall pine trees, and dense jungles that resemble a mystical vibe. The ancient trees that surround the forests are spiraling, and some even have convoluted branches. If you get lucky to see a clear summit, you might even get a glance at the majestic Mount Apo.

Given its major climb classification and a difficulty level of 6/9, those attempting to reach its summit should have prior hiking experience and extensive preparation. You must have yourself physically and mentally conditioned to traverse moss-covered jungles and slippery slopes.

Another magnificent hiking destination in the Philippines, known as Mt. Guiting-Guiting, lies at the heart of the Sibuyan Island in Romblon province, between Luzon and Visayas mainlands. It stands majestically at around 2,058 meters above sea level.

Bordering the Northernmost provinces of Benguet and Ifugao in the Cordillera region, Mt. Pulag is the country's third-highest mountain and Luzon's highest peak with an elevation of 2,922 meters above sea level. It is one of the most popular destinations for a major hike in Luzon.

1. Mt. Apo (Davao) 

The highest in the country and undeniably the best mountain to hike in the Philippines is Mt. Apo with a summit towering 2,956 meters above sea level over Southern Mindanao. It is located west of Davao City , home to the critically endangered Philippine Eagle.

As a Filipino, I take great pride in our country’s stunning white sandy beaches, vibrant marine life, and breathtaking sunsets. You’ll find these natural wonders in abundance, whether you’re in Luzon, Visayas, or Mindanao!

Our mountains may not receive as much international recognition as our islands and beaches, but they are equally deserving of our pride. I can attest to their beauty, having witnessed it firsthand.

In this blog post, I’ll introduce you to 10 of the most famous mountains in the Philippines. These mountains are beloved by Filipino hikers. If you’re looking for a hiking bucket list in the Philippines, these are the mountains that you are looking for.

Did you know that the Philippines has thousands of mountains? This is because of the country’s volcanic history, which goes back millions of years. These mountains vary in height, from a few hundred meters to almost 3000 meters above sea level. Peakvisor says that over 3000 of these mountains have names.

With so many mountains, it’s hard to say for sure which ones are the most beautiful or best for hiking. But we can figure out which ones are the most famous. These are the mountains that hikers and photographers love.

To make the list in this post, I did something simple. I looked at the Instagram account of SinoPinas. I looked at their photos and checked out all the mountains they showed. Then I counted up the results. The mountains that SinoPinas showed the most ended up on this list.

Why did I choose SinoPinas? I picked SinoPinas for this mini-study on the Philippines’ most famous mountains for a few reasons. First, local knowledge: Filipinos know the beauty of the Philippines better than anyone else. SinoPinas is a platform made by Filipinos, for Filipinos. Second, community focus: SinoPinas is a group of Filipinos who want to explore the Philippines. They want to learn about its beauty, culture, and people, one place at a time. I’m sure that the mountains SinoPinas shows are as beautiful in real life as they are in pictures.

10 Famous Mountains In The Philippines

Now, let me introduce you to 10 of the most famous mountains in the Philippines. I’ll provide a brief overview of each, including their elevation, location, and notable features. This will give you an idea of how to reach the starting point of each hike and how challenging these hikes can be.

But in a very brief summary:

• Minor hike = for everybody . Usually, these hikes are only day hikes. But some may involve overnight camping.
• Major hike = challenging . These hikes typically last for more than 2 days.

10. Mount Ugo

Let’s kick off the list of the most famous mountains in the Philippines with Mount Ugo, a 2150-meter tall mountain in the provinces of Nueva Vizcaya and Benguet.

Mount Ugo, despite being a major hike, is a popular hiking destination in the Philippines. Hundreds of mountaineers hike up Mount Ugo for an epic view at its peak yearly.

On the hiking trails of Mount Ugo, you will be passing through pine forests and highland villages inhabited by natives. There are parts of the hiking trail where you can already see a view of the Cordillera mountain range, which can be so motivating to reach the summit. You can witness a view of a sea of clouds from Mount Ugo’s summit, making it a compelling mountain to climb. 

What can serve as a twist in your hiking experience on Mount Ugo are the ghost stories echoing in the ears of the hikers visiting Mount Ugo. Mount Ugo is rumored to be haunted by the people who died in aircraft accidents that happened in 1960 and 1987. 

Believe it or not, the established guide system in Mount Ugo is linked to these accidents. The rescue operations held paved the hiking trail where you will be trekking to the summit of Mount Ugo.

How to go to Mount Ugo?

Starting from Metro Manila, get a Victory Liner bus ride from Kamias Terminal going to Aritao. After arriving in Aritao, rent a jeep to transport you to Kapaya. A jump-off point awaits you there in Kapaya, Nueva Vizcaya.

Mount Ugo hiking difficulty:

Mount Ugo is a major climb with a difficulty score of 5 on a scale of 9 . The trail of Mount Ugo involves walking, hiking along rugged terrain, and scrambling. It would take a total of 9 to 10 hours to reach the peak and 2 to 3 days to finish the whole hiking activity.

9. Mount Dulang Dulang

Mount Dulang-Dulang, with a peak rising above the clouds at 2938 meters above sea level, is the second-highest mountain in the Philippines. This mountain, often called by hikers as Mount “D2,” is also one of the country’s most famous mountains.

You can find Mount Dulang-Dulang in the province of Bukidnon within Mindanao island, southern Philippines. Along the hiking trails to the summit of Mount Dulang-Dulang, you will see different landscapes varying from pine forests to mossy forests and grasslands.

However, if there’s a part of Mount Dulang-Dulang that’s totally unmissable, it’s its mossy forest. If there is one feature of Mount Dulang-Dulang that made it famous, it’s definitely its mossy forest.

The mossy forest of Mount Dulang Dulang looks absolutely enchanting! The trees here have twisted branches, comparable to fairytale movies and elven forests. Some hikers even describe the mossy forest of Mount Dulang-Dulang as the Rivendell (a fictional place in the movie “Lord of the Rings”) of the Philippines.

You can also witness a sea of clouds from the summit of Mount Dulang-Dulang. But do you know what can make your visit or hike to Mount Dulang-Dulang unique? It’s the immersion to Talaandig or Higaonon tribe.

You will discover a fascinating culture before you hike Mount Dulang-Dulang. These tribes have an ancestral claim to the mount Dulang Dulang. And indeed, before climbing the mountain, one must first seek a blessing from the leader of the tribe.

Rituals, chicken sacrifice, and the hanging of white bands at the summit are just some of the respect-manifesting activities that add to the mystical character of Mount Dulang Dulang.

Mountaineers like Mark Osorio, who has been to Mount Dulang Dulang, have enjoyed the company of these tribes.

He said, “It made me realize that we can’t just judge a place and its people based on rumors and stereotypes until we have proven it wrong by staying there for a while.” 

How to go to Mount Dulang Dulang?

Land travel to Mount Dulang Dulang starts from Cagayan De Oro City if you are coming outside of Mindanao. In Cagayan De Oro City, find Agora Terminal, and from there, take a bus to Malaybalay, Bukidnon. In Malaybalay, ride the jeepneys headed to Lantapan.

Mount Dulang-Dulang hiking difficulty:

Mount Dulang Dulang is a major climb with a difficulty score of 6 on a scale of 9 . You would need 2 days to finish the hike and 10 hours to reach the summit. On the trail, you will walk along rugged terrain, do scrambling and climb easy cliffs (beginners should be protected by a rope)

8. Mount Pinatubo

For me, one of the reasons why the mountains in the Philippines are so fascinating to hike is because their beauty is diverse like Filipinos. If you will notice, it is already evident in the 10 famous mountains in this post.

Of all the mountains in this post, Mount Pinatubo is definitely the one that you’ll find so stunning. This volcano, sitting in the provinces of Tarlac and Zambales, has a postcard-level view from its crater. Mount Pinatubo has a crater lake. And, with its rocky peaks, enthralling scenery is seen, similar to the Canadian Rockies.

Indeed, Mount Pinatubo is an incredible masterpiece of nature.

Did you know? This mountain once stood more than 1700 meters above sea level. When it erupted in 1991, it significantly destroyed itself, lowering its height to 1486m. Because Mount Pinatubo’s beauty was created from destruction, people dubbed Mount Pinatubo, the “Beautiful Disaster.”

There are several ways to go to the crater lake of Mount Pinatubo. The easiest is by riding a 4×4 jeep plus a two-hour hike to the crater. During the 4×4 jeep ride, visitors experience an out-of-this-world adventure on the surface or fields of frozen lahar.  On your way to the crater on a 4×4, you’ll pass by sharp triangular hills that can already fill you with awe.

The entire 4×4 ride lasts for nearly an hour. You must expect a sweaty hike after the 4×4 ride. The hiking trail has very few parts with tree cover.

It is best to go to Mount Pinatubo from December to February. Aside from milder temperatures and clear skies, it is when the color of the lake turns magnificent cyan.

How to go to Mount Pinatubo?

From Metro Manila, take a bus to Capas, Tarlac, then head to Sta. Juliana. Lastly, register and get your 4×4 jeep on Sitio Daipili. It is where you can start your adventure on Mount Pinatubo.

Tip : it is better to join Facebook groups or travel agencies when going to Mount Pinatubo. They will eliminate the hassle of transportation and save you money from renting a 4×4 jeep.

Mount Pinatubo hiking difficulty:

The hike to Mount Pinatubo is a minor climb. It has a difficulty score of 2 out of 9 . The trail leading to the crater is very easy; it would only require walking with care.

7. Mount Ulap

One of the most accessible mountains on this list is Mount Ulap. This mountain, located in Tuba Municipality in Benguet Province, is the favorite hiking destination of the travelers of Baguio City. It only takes 40 minutes to reach Mount Ulap’s jump-off site from Baguio city. 

At 1846 meters above sea level, travelers and hikers on top of Mount Ulap enjoy a scenic view of the Cordillera mountain range. If the weather favors you, you can see the stunning scenery of mountains in different shades of blue. Among those mountains are Mount Pulag and Mount Ugo.

One of the attractions in Mount Ulap is Pong-Ol Burial Caves. This cultural attraction can be your unique experience for this mountain. However, the last time I checked, it was closed to the public because authorities were conducting a study. (see the resources section for more information)

Because of its easy access to the public, weekend hikes seem less fun and less relaxing due to the crowd swarming Mount Ulap.  People often form queues in Gungol Rock, a highlight of the trail, to take photos during weekends. When the line is already lengthy, a visitor gets only a 15 seconds chance to do their pose.

How to go to Mount Ulap?

From Metro Manila, ride any bus headed to Baguio City. In Baguio, hop on a jeepney to Barangay Ampucao, where you register, secure guides, and start your hike to Mount Ulap.

Mount Ulap hiking difficulty:

Mount Ulap is a minor hike with a difficulty score of 3 out of 9 . The whole hike would take only a day unless you want to do overnight camping. The trek to reach the summit typically lasts only two to three hours. It would only involve walking along a rugged/steep terrain and a few scrambling.

6. Mount Balagbag

Among all the mountains on the list, Mount Balagbag is the one closest to Metro Manila. It is situated in Rodriguez in Rizal Province, only two hours away from the metro. 

Fun fact, Mount Balagbag belongs to the Sierra Madre, the longest mountain range in the Philippines. Believe it or not, this mountain range spans over 540 kilometers (340 miles) along half of the length of Luzon Island.

Mount Balagbag stands only 777 meters above sea level, making it the famous mountain in the Philippines with the lowest elevation. Although that is the case, you can still see magnificent views from its peak. 

This famous mountain of the Philippines is visited by many to do overnight camping and enjoy the overlooking view of the city, filled with glittering city lights.

During the day, you should also see a scenic view of the Sierra Madre’s mountain range transition to Central Luzon’s flat plains. You can spot the Ipo watershed from Mount Balagbag, as well.

The trails in Mount Balagbag are spacious. That’s why so many mountain bikers love climbing this mountain. Some parts of Mount Balagbag are barren and grasslands; this makes hiking during midday impossible due to intense heat. Late afternoon or early morning treks are recommended.

How to go to Mount Balagbag?

From Cubao in Quezon City, Metro Manila, ride a bus heading to Tungko (drop off in BDO Tungko). After reaching Tungko, hop on a jeep heading to Licao-Licao. There you can walk or rent a tricycle to transport you to the Barangay registration site to sign up for hiking.

If you have a 4×4 jeep or a pick-up, you can drive directly near the Balagbag campsite.

Mount Balagbag hiking difficulty:

Mount Balagbag is a minor hike with a difficulty of 3 out of 9 . Trekking in Mount Balagbag would only be just a stroll over rugged terrain. The hike could last for 2 days as you might want to have an overnight camp. The trek, however, from base to the summit only lasts for an hour or two.

5. Mount Guiting Guiting

They say the virtues of a true mountaineer, patience and perseverance, are put to the test when climbing Mount Guiting Guiting. Conquering this famous mountain is one of the most challenging hikes in the Philippines.

In fact, Filipino hikers climb this mountain as their preparation before hiking Mount Everest.

Mount Guiting Guiting stands 2048 meters on a small island of Sibuyan in the province of Romblon, 187 nautical miles from Manila. There at the top, lies the view of its marvelous craggy peaks—the part of Mount Guiting-Guiting that made it so famous in the hiking society online and offline.

The stories I read about Mount Guiting-Guiting amazed me deeply. 

I salute the determination and strength of every hiker that has reached Mount Guiting-Guiting’s summit. Trekking on top of Mount Guiting-Guiting’s knife edge ridge and the “kiss the wall” section of the trail seem impossible to pass, but these hikers made it through.

How to go to Mount Guiting-Guiting?

From Metro Manila, get a bus ride to Batangas Pier, then take the ferry to Ambulong Port in Magdiwang, Romblon. Proceed to the local Tourism Council to register and begin your adventure. Get the exact details here .

Mount Guiting-Guiting hiking difficulty:

Hiking on Mount Guiting Guiting is a major climb, and it rates 9 out of 9 in terms of difficulty. The assault to the summit takes 10 to 13 hours to finish, and the number of days you would spend on the trail would be around 3. Mount Guiting Guiting has a trail class of 5, meaning hikers would be using free hands as a climbing method.

4. Mount Apo

Mount Apo, being the tallest mountain in the Philippines, is undoubtedly famous as it is taught in schools as the country’s highest peak. Almost everyone in the country knows what Mount Apo is.

However, Mount Apo is not only famous because the schools mention it to kids. For local hikers, going to Mount Apo’s summit is a meaningful hike. Stepping foot on top of Mount Apo is an achievement for every local hiker.

For me, to be at the summit of Mount Apo figuratively means that I have conquered the entire country. At 2956 meters, nowhere else in the Philippines can you stand higher to have an overlooking view of the country.

By the way, where can you find Mount Apo?

You can find Mount Apo in the provinces of Davao del Sur and North Cotabato in Mindanao. From the jump-off location to the summit, you should be able to see the different features of Mount Apo. Expect to discover its swaps, cogon grasslands, and pine forest.

Then, at the summit, it’s mostly rocky, filled with wild berries and temperate plants.

Bodies of water, like waterfalls and lakes, exist in the landscape of Mount Apo. You must see Lake Akgo on trails and crystal clear Lake Venado, a camping site in mount Apo.

Conquering Mount Apo is not easy, but it’s going to be adventurous and fun. Hiking in Mount Apo involves climbing a 90-degree trail and river crossings through coconut logs without any hold for support.  After the tiring yet rewarding hike, you can relax in Mainit Hot Spring or take a refreshing bath in Bongolanon waterfalls.

How to go to Mount Apo?

Starting from Metro Manila, book a plane going to Davao City. After arriving at Davao City, take the van going to Kidapawan. In Kidapawan, proceed to the tourism office and register for a hike in Mount Apo, secure guides. After your registration, move ahead to Barangay Ilomavis to start hiking.

Tip : Arrange a trip before flying to Mount Apo for faster and easier transportation.

Mount Apo hiking difficulty:

Mount Apo is a major hike and is rated 7 out of 9 in terms of difficulty. There are a few trails for hiking Mount Apo. One of them, the Kidapawan-Magpet trail, involves only walking on rugged terrain and scrambling. It takes 10 to 11 hours to hit the summit and would require 3 days to finish the whole adventure.

3. Mount Kupapey

If you ask me, “what’s the most worth visiting hiking destination in the Philippines?” I won’t think twice; my answer will be Mount Kupapey.  On Mount Kupapey’s summit, 1650 meters (5413 feet) above sea level, lies the scenery you won’t forget.

During pleasant weather, the panorama of the mountains, a sea of clouds, and a breathtaking view of the Maligcong Rice Terraces await you.  When I went to Mount Kupapey, I could not believe what I saw.  It’s an absolutely marvelous beauty. If you go here, make sure you’ll catch the sunrise—it’s spectacular.

Before sunrise, you’ll see the valley below Mount Kupapey covered by a sea of clouds. As the sun rises, the clouds disappear, uncurtaining the rice terraces beneath them. The mountains surrounding Maligcong rice terraces cut the radiance of the sun towards the terraces.

This makes each step of the rice terraces glow one by one as the sun begins to peek higher and higher above the mountain.

So, where is Mount Kupapey?

Mount Kupapey is one of the peaks of Maligcong, a small barangay in the municipality of Bontoc. For me, Mount Kupapey parallels Mount Pulag for the awe it can give its visitors.

Awe-filling scenery does not end at the summit of Mount Kupapey.  The descent from the peak is a unique experience, especially for Filipinos wanting a real encounter with their heritage. The hiking trail from the summit traverses Maligcong rice terraces, which are a testimony to Filipino’s ingenuity and unparalleled hard work.

How to go to Mount Kupapey?

From Cubao, Quezon City, Metro Manila, ride on a bus heading to Bontoc, Mountain Province. Alight the bus in downtown Bontoc where you will find a jeepney terminal bound for Maligcong. 

If you cannot find the terminal, rent a tricycle and ask the driver to bring you to the said place. Ride the jeep to Maligcong; the travel time to your destination from the terminal would last 30 minutes.

Mount Kupapey hiking difficulty:

Mount Kupapey is a minor hike with a difficulty of 3 on a scale of 9 . It would only take 3 hours for anyone to get to the summit. Unless you plan to camp overnight, the hike would only last for a day. The trail involves stiff and rugged terrain. Expect scrambling a few times.

2. Mount Mayon

Of all the famous mountains in the Philippines, Mount Mayon is the one which is undoubtedly known all around the world. Being one of the very few mountains to have a perfect cone shape, there’s no doubt why Mount Mayon gets international attention.

Honestly, you do not have to hike to see awe-inspiring mountain beauty. You can just go to Albay, stay in a house in Legazpi with a view of Mayon , and enjoy the extraordinary panorama.

Who would not be mesmerized by its beauty? Is there anyone who does not wonder how it was formed? With a height of 2463 meters and a different shape, spotting it from a distance is effortless.

Do you want to hike Mayon? Sadly, authorities don’t allow hiking on Mount Mayon due to its recent volcanic activities. So visitors and hikers only admire it from afar. Stay tuned with Phivolcs to know when it will be accessible to hikers again.

However, before it was closed to the public, some had been to the summit crater and successfully conquered it. These hikers said the trail they’ve been to is composed of forest, grasslands, and lava flow rock formations. They climbed rocks and traversed a knife-edge-like part of the trail.

How to go to Mount Mayon?

From Metro Manila, hop on a bus straight to Legazpi City, Albay. The bus ride would give you 11 hours of endless sight of the Philippine countryside. Alternatively, you can book a plane that flies 30 to 45 minutes straight to Albay if you’re short of time.

Mount Mayon hiking difficulty:

Mount Mayon is a major climb that takes 3 days to finish. The trail difficulty is rated 7 out of 9 and shall involve walking on a rugged path, scrambling, and climbing freehand with ropes and guides.

1. Mount Pulag

For me, Mount Pulag is a special place. Well, actually, it’s really a notable place!  Why? Mount Pulag is the coldest place in the Philippines, a country with everlasting summer. If you’re a Filipino wanting to experience “winter,” Mount Pulag won’t let your expectations down!

Another reason is that Mount Pulag, with a height that’s 2926 meters above sea level, is the Philippines’ third tallest mountain. Its peak is the point where the borders of the three provinces meet (Benguet, Nueva Vizcaya, and Ifugao). Isn’t it cool that you are in Benguet, Nueva Vizcaya, and Ifugao all at the same time when you are standing at their peak?

Beyond these, the most compelling reason to hike Mount Pulag is the unparalleled panorama you can see from its summit, especially during sunrise with a sea of clouds! The grasslands on its peak turn into golden islands above the clouds.

Like Mount Dulang-Dulang and Mount Apo, Mount Pulag also has a mossy forest that looks so enchanting. It’s the part of the hike that will not let you pass without taking photos.

To me, Mount Pulag is the best mountain to hike because it has hiking trails that fit all people with different hiking experiences. Most importantly, everyone can have an absolutely rewarding view once they reach the summit.

How to go to Mount Pulag?

From Metro Manila, take a bus heading to Baguio City. Rent a taxi to transport you to Kabayan Terminal. Take a van or bus to Kabayan and tell the driver or the bus conductor to drop you off at the DENR office.

After reaching the DENR office and taking your orientation, rent a Habal-Habal driver to help you arrive at the ranger station to start your hike.

Hiking Mount Pulag is a major climb that takes 1 to 2 days to finish. The trail difficulty (Ambangeg—the easiest hiking trail) is rated 3 out of 9 and involves walking on rugged terrain and scrambling. Traversing the trail from jump-off to summit lasts for 4 to 5 hours.

Philippine Mountains With Sea of Clouds

If you’re dreaming of witnessing a sea of clouds, your best chance is to venture to peaks that rise over 2000 meters above sea level. Mountains such as Mt. Pulag, Mt. Apo, Mt. D2, Mt. Amuyao, and Mt. Ugo are renowned for this mesmerizing phenomenon. You might also find luck at Mt. Kupapey and Mt. Balagbag, or any mountain that overlooks a valley with stable air mass conditions.

However, it’s crucial to remember that altitude alone doesn’t guarantee a view of a sea of clouds. The weather plays a pivotal role. The more stable the atmosphere, the higher your chances of beholding this breathtaking sight.

At an altitude of 2000 meters (or 6560 feet), you can expect milder or single-digit temperatures (in Celsius). So, if you’re planning to scale high-altitude mountains in pursuit of a sea of clouds, don’t forget to pack a jacket!

I had my own encounter with this in January 2019 when I ascended Mt. Pulag, hoping to see a sea of clouds. During my first hike on Mount Pulag, I faced freezing temperatures that nearly dropped to 0° Celsius. So, always be prepared!

Its main crater has a lake, so your climb will be rewarded with this unique geographical view that also makes the volcano a popular tourist attraction.

The Spanish Trail, a popular route among hikers, can be trekked by foot or horseback ride. Hiking via this trail can take about 4 hours. Aside from hiking, you can enjoy the views of the Taal Volcano and its surrounding lake by renting a boat – if you’re lucky, you can even catch a glimpse of a school of tawilis (freshwater sardines) in the lake.

While it’s a small volcano, it has had several violent eruptions, the most recent of which was in January 2020 and covered nearby areas in the south of Metro Manila with ashes. So when you’re planning to go, make sure to check the latest Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) advisory first. 

How to get there: From Metro Manila, catch a bus going to Balayan or Nasugbu from Pasay. When you get off at Tanuan Bayan, ride a tricycle to Talisay, then hop on a boat to Taal. If you’re planning to stay the night after your climb, you can check out nearby accommodation in Tagaytay .

2. Mount Gulugud Baboy, Batangas – offers views of bays and islands

With a height of 525 meters, Mount Gulugud Baboy in Anilao, Batangas is a perfect destination for hikers wanting to see the scenic views of bays and islands in Batangas. There’s plenty to see here, as the mountain is also famous for its lush, rolling landscapes and abundance of animals such as dogs, cows, and goats.

If you are into diving, you can also take side trips to nearby resorts such as Phil Pan Diving Resort and Planet Dive Anilao. Sombrero Island – Batangas’s hidden, smallest island – is nearby and offers spectacular views. 

How to get there: Take a bus to Batangas Grand Terminal from Pasay. Once in Batangas, take a jeep to Anilao, then catch a tricycle going to the mountain. If you’re planning to camp, there’s no designated campsite on the mountain, but you can pitch a tent nearby the peak to get gorgeous evening and sunrise views. 

3. Mount Batulao, Batangas – known for its rugged grasslands

Batangas is indeed filled with unique geographical landscapes, including a mountain that gives off the vibe of Batanes’ rolling hills. At 693 meters, Mount Batulao in Nasugbu, Batangas is known for its stunning views of boulders and rugged grasslands.

Aside from the views, the mountain has beginner-friendly slopes. You can climb the mountain via the Old Trail and the New Trail. It’s advisable that you begin with the harder path first, the Old Trail, which features a more challenging route as you’ll have to rappel on some paths, while the New Trail has easier terrain. 

How to get there: Mount Batulao is a few hours away from Metro Manila. At Buendia Terminal in Pasay, ride a bus going to Nasugbu, Batangas, then get off at KC Hillcrest Golf Club. There are 10 campsites on the mountain where you can pitch your tent, but staying at the summit is not allowed.

4. Mount Makiling, Batangas and Laguna – has mud and hot springs

With a height of 1,090 meters, Mount Makiling watches over the towns of Los Baños and Calamba in Laguna and Sto. Tomas in Batangas. The mountain is known for its geothermal areas such as mud and hot springs, so if you’re planning an overnight stay in Laguna before climbing this peak, there’re a lot of nearby hot spring resorts you can relax in too. 

Its forest has been declared as an ASEAN Heritage Park because it’s home to a variety of species, 62 of which are native to the Philippines such as the Philippine eagle owl, Philippine pygmy fruit bat, and the Philippine monkey. Aside from this, in Filipino mythology, the mountain is even believed to be the sanctuary of lady Maria Makiling whose reclining position is said to be akin to the mountain’s shape. 

How to get there: You can begin your trip to Mount Makiling by taking a bus going to Sta. Cruz, Laguna from Cubao. Get off at Olivarez Mall in Los Baños, then take a jeep going to UPLB College of Forestry. There are two campsites on the mountain where you can pitch your tent: the Tayabak Campsite and Malaboo Campsite.

5. Mount Hibok-Hibok, Camiguin – offers majestic views of White Island

Rising to an elevation of 1,332 meters, Mount Hibok-Hibok guards over Camiguin Island. While every mountain’s peak offers great views, Mount Hibok-Hibok’s summit is where you can marvel at the majestic White Island, a white sandbar stretching on Camiguin Island.

The Mt. Timpoong-Hibok-Hibok Natural Monument, comprising the forests of Mount Timpoong and Hibok-Hibok, is also one of the ASEAN Heritage Parks in the Philippines. The park is considered a heritage park because of its unique species such as the Camiguin hawk owl, Camiguin narrow-mouthed frog, and medicinal tree Kalingag. 

Nearby hot springs abound, such as the Ardent Hot Springs made up of man-made pools, a popular starting point when climbing the mountain.

How to get there: Take a van going to Agora Terminal from Cagayan de Oro, then catch a van or bus going to Balingoan Port. Once at the port, hop on a boat going to Benoni Port. You can pitch a tent at the mountain’s base camp.

6. mount ulap, benguet – overlooks cordillera mountain ranges.

Nestled high in Itogon, Benguet, Mt. Ulap stands at 1,846 meters and offers views of the Cordillera mountain ranges. It makes for a perfect day hike for tourists coming from Baguio, as it’s only a 40-minute ride from Burnham Park and hiking can be completed from 4-6 hours. 

The stunning landscapes of the mountain, dotted with pine groves and formed by rolling grasslands, indeed represent the region’s geographical features.

The Gungal Rock, protruding over a steep cliff, is one of the most popular stops on the mountain. It’s a perfect spot to take pictures, as it offers you a panoramic view of the surrounding mountainous hills under a sea of clouds. You can also learn a thing or two about ancient traditions while climbing the mountain as you’ll pass by ancient burial caves, where you can see skulls and bones. 

Due to its location in the chilly highlands of North Luzon, bring thick jackets with you when climbing the mountain as temperatures can range from 15 to 20°C.

How to get there: When heading to the mountain from Baguio, take a jeep going to Barangay Ampucao in Itogon, then get off at Ampucao Elementary School. There are several campsites on the mountain, but look out for manure from cows grazing on the field.

7. Mount Kanlaon, Negros Island – highest point in the Visayas

Mount Kanlaon , which stands at 2,435 meters, is the highest point in the Central Visayas and one of the Philippines’ active volcanoes. Aside from its diverse flora and fauna, the mountain is brimming with hot springs such as the Mambucal Hot Springs, Bucalan Hot Spring, and Bungol Hot Spring where you can relax and take a warm bath. 

Wasay, Mananawin, Maput and Guintubdan are four trails that reach the mountain’s summit. It takes about 2 days to hike the mountain via most of these routes, while the Guintubdan trail can be conquered by experienced hikers in one day. The mountain has two summit cones with craters, and Pagatpat Ridge, an intersection point of all four trails, is where hikers can set up camp overnight. 

How to get there: Take a van from the Bacolod-Silay Airport. Get off at the Ceres South Bus Terminal in Bacolod, then ride a bus bound for Canlaon. 

Once in Canlaon, you can ask the driver to drop you off at the Canlaon City Bus Terminal where habal-habal (motorcycle taxi) drivers wait.

8. Mount Mayon, Bicol – famous for its symmetrical cone shape

Mayon Volcano , which rises to 2,462 meters, is world-renowned for its symmetrical cone shape. Its beauty has inspired a popular romantic myth from Bicol about a princess named Magayon and a warrior named Handiong, a prince from a tribe that rivalled against hers.

While it’s a natural beauty, it’s also one of the Philippines’ most active volcanoes. It has erupted several times – the most violent eruption, that claimed thousands of lives, was recorded in 1814. 

The remains of the Cagsawa Church from the 1814 eruption can still be found near the mountain and have been a popular attraction in Albay as well. Do make sure to check the latest safety advisory from the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) before you head there. 

When it’s open for climbers, the mountain has two trails – the Buyuhan and Buang trails – that you can walk on to reach the summit. There are two camps on the mountain: Camp 1 is at the foot of Mayon, while Camp 2 is located near a waterfall.

How to get there: As traveling by land to Albay from Metro Manila can take a while, booking a flight to Legazpi Airport from Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) can be more convenient.

9. Mount Pulag, Benguet – offers views of a sea of clouds

Elevated 2,926 meters above the ground, Mount Pulag is the third-highest mountain in the Philippines. Aside from Mount Ulap, the mountain is also a perfect stopover when you’re in Baguio, as it’s within the Cordillera region. Here, you’ll be rewarded with views of a sea of clouds as the mountain stretches from Ilocos Norte to the Cordillera provinces. 

A variety of wildlife species, such as the Philippine Brown Deer and Northern Luzon Giant Cloud Rat, thrives here, while its forest is home to the rate pitcher plant and pine trees. It has 4 trails, with varying levels of difficulty. Ambangeg Trail is the easiest, while Ambaguio trail is the most difficult because of its steep inclines. 

Since it’s located in the highlands of North Luzon, you should bring a thick jacket when climbing this mountain as temperatures can drop to 1°C.

How to get there: Ride a taxi going to Old Slaughter House from Baguio, then get off at a van terminal in Kabayan. Head to the local Department of Natural Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) station, and from there, ride a habal-habal going to the Ranger Station. 

Do plan your trip dates ahead of time, as during the weekends, you can only camp at Ranger Station, while Camps 1 and 2 are open on weekdays.

10. Mount Apo – the Philippines’ highest peak

Standing tall at 2,954 meters, Mount Apo in Davao del Sur is the Philippines’ highest peak. Stretching across 64,000 hectares of land, the mountain is home to various geographical wonders, so you’ll be rewarded with plenty of things to see here such as lush landscapes, lakes, rivers, and volcanic deposits. It’s also home to about 272 bird species such as the Philippine Eagle. 

Reaching this mountain’s summit, which takes about 3 to 4 days, is only advisable for experienced mountaineers. There are various trails you can choose to take, but the most popular is the Sibulan – Mt. Apo trail for its easy accessibility from Davao City an hour away, and the beautiful wildlife along the way. 

How to get there: From Davao Airport, you can get to the mountain by hailing a taxi or rent a car going to the mountain’s starting point. There are three camps on the mountain – the Sitio Tompis bake camp, Tinikaran Holding Camp 1, and Tinikaran Holding Camp 2, where a tiny dam of still water can be found.

At 2,956 meters above sea level, Mt. Apo (or “master” or “grandchild” in Filipino) is the highest mountain in the Philippines. Scale the summit and be rewarded with majestic views of Davao to the northeast, Digos City to the southeast, and Kidapawan City to the West. Mt. Apo was declared a national park in 1934 by then President Manuel L. Quezon, and rightly so. Apart from lush forests, it is home to over 272 bird species, the most notable of which is the endangered Philippine eagle.

2. Mt. Dulang-Dulang

The second highest mountain the Philippines is home to the Talaandig tribe, who consider Mt. Dulang-Dulang a sacred place. The tribes folk live side by side with an amazing variety of wildlife – deer, flying lemurs, monkeys, and bats, to name a few. Start your journey on trails lined with pine trees and then navigate through jungles that take you back in time. Be rewarded with a view of Mt. Apo and the entire Kitanglad range at the peak.

3. Mt. Pulag

Mt. Pulag is Luzon’s highest peak. This national park is home to the Ibalois, Kilanguya, Kankana-eys, Karao, Ifugaos, and the Ilocanos. It is a popular destination among mountaineers for its amazing sea of clouds and views of the Milky Way galaxy right before the sun rises. Due to a fire that destroyed more than 5 hectares of grassland, Mt. Pulag is closed to trekkers until further notice.

4. Mt. Kitanglad

Legend has it that Mt. Kitanglad was named after a great flood submerged the land and only the mountain’s peak, which was the size of a blade of lemon grass (“tanglad” in Filipino) was visible. Mountaineers might be surprised to learn that Mt. Kitanglad is a communications center. But don’t be put off by its seeming modernity. The challenging trails, beautiful views, and the richness of its biodiversity make the journey worth it.

5. Mt. Tabayoc

Tabayoc, in the native tongue, means “basin”, which may refer to the four lakes surrounding it: Lake Tabeo, Ambulalakao, Iculus, and Detapnaco. A significant portion of Mt. Tabayoc’s trail is known as the “Monkey Trail” – trekkers would have to climb over boulders, swing from one branch to another, and hang on to vines to move forward. If you’ve ever wondered what it would be like to be in Tarzan’s shoes (or, um, loincloth), climbing the second highest mountain in Luzon would be your chance to find out.

6. Mt. Kalatungan

Mt. Kalatungan (or “praying mantis eggs” in the native tongue) is classified as a potentially active volcano and is considered as one of the most challenging climbs in the country. In keeping with local traditions, mountaineers perform a ritual sacrifice prior to the climb.

Mt. Piapayungan remains to be one of Mindanao’s most elusive peaks.

8. Mt. Ragang

Mt. Ragang, also known as the Blue Mountain, is the highest point in Lanao Del Sur. Emerge from the ethereal mossy forest and be rewarded with a view of Lake Lanao as well as towns of Maguindanao, Lanao del Sur, and Cotabato.

9. Mt. Maagnaw

Mt. Maagnaw is the third highest peak in the Kitanglad range and the 8th highest mountain in the country. If you’ve conquered Mt. Dulang-Dulang and Mt. Kitanglad, this should also be on your list. The views at the summit are truly breathtaking.

10. Mt. Timbak

If you’re on a mission to summit the 10 highest mountains in the Philippines, Mt. Timbak – the 9th on that list – is said to be the easiest to complete. Get a glimpse of the local way of life along the way, and take photos of the three crosses at the summit. Mountaineers usually plan a day hike to Mt. Timbak from Baguio. Its environs are also a playground for trail runners.

11. mt. halcon.

With lush forests, crystal clear water from its rivers, and majestic views at the summit. Mt. Halcon is one of the must-climb peaks in the country. It is also one of the most difficult due to its steep slopes. Make sure you’re up to the challenge – both physically and mentally – before embarking on this adventure. As the weather is critical to the success of the climb, it’s best to plan a trip during the summer months.

12. Mt. Kanlaon

This active volcano is popular among avid climbers and is the main highlight of the Mt. Kanlaon Natural Park. Mountaineers can climb Mt. Kanlaon via two trails: Wasay and Guintubdan. The Wasay trail is considered as one of the longest and most demanding in the Visayas region; it could take two days before you reach the crater.

13. Mt. Mayon

According to local folklore, Mt. Mayon or Mayon Volcano was named after the princess Daragang Magayon (which translates to “beautiful lady” in English). Its perfect cone shape is a huge crowd-drawer; mountaineers and regular tourists brave a trip to see it even if the volcano continues to be restive.

14. Mt. Madjaas

Mt. Madjaas reigns supreme among the mountains in Panay. Its name means “tall” in the local dialect, but it could also refer to its grandeur, as it rewards climbers with sweeping vistas at the summit.

15. Mt. Mantalingajan

Palawan is synonymous to pristine beaches – but there are also highlands waiting to be explored, like Mt. Mantalingajan. Locals refer to the highest point in Palawan as the “Mountain of God.”. It was once the home of the Tau’t Daram, known for their ferociousness and extraordinary agility. It is also home to an amazing array of trees, plants, and flowers endemic to the area. Warning: it takes an average of 4 to 5 days to scale it!

16. Mt. Guiting-Guiting

Fondly referred to as G2 by enthusiasts, this mountain is the highest in the province of Romblon. Guiting-Guiting in the local dialect means “jagged” – this could refer to how challenging it is to scale it – the experience is said to be at par with Mt. Halcon and Mt. Mantalingajan. The mysticism surrounding the mountain adds to its allure.

17. Mt. Ulap

Scale Mt. Ulap to get a feel of the Cordilleras: marvel at pine trees, grasslands, vast mountain ranges, quaint villages, burial caves, and hanging bridges along the way. It’s suitable for hikers of all levels.

18. Mt. Pinatubo

Mt. Pinatubo made it to the world headlines with its massive eruption in 1991. Today it is one of the most popular day hikes near Manila; Mt. Pinatubo’s moon-like terrain, ash fields, rocky rivers, and renowned crater lake are huge crowd drawers. Mt. Pinatubo is home to the Aetas, who continue to thrive in the area.

19. Alto Peak

The highest point in the Eastern Visayas region, Alto Peak is at the heart of the stunning Lake Danao National Park in Ormoc, Leyte. Its climate and vegetation is reminiscent of the Cordilleras.

20. Mt. Mariveles (Tarak Ridge)

Another popular day hike near Manila, Tarak Ridge rewards trekkers with views of Bataan, Manila Bay, Corregidor, and Cavite. The craggy landscape and strong winds make Tarak Ridge an exciting, must-see destination.

21. Mt. Balingkilat

Mt. Balingkilat (or “Mountain of Thunder” in the Aeta language) is one of the highest peaks in Zambales. Trekkers could scale this and the nearby Mt. Cinco Picos in one adventure-packed weekend. Marvel at the South China Sea and beautiful coves like Anawangin, Taleisayen, Nagsasa, and Silanguin once you reach the summit.

22. Mt. Makiling

With its rich flora and fauna, a trip to the mystical Mt. Makiling is a must among mountaineers, scientists, and tourists. The mythical forest nymph Maria Makiling is said to be the mountain’s guardian. Mt. Makiling’s silhouette is said to be that of Maria in a reclining position.

23. Mt. Iraya

The imposing Mt. Iraya is one of the 22 active volcanoes in the country. It is sacred to the Ivatans, the local people of Batanes – the elders believe that a ring of clouds forms around Mt. Iraya when a loved one departs.

The majestic Mt. Arayat is a regal presence amidst the plains of Central Luzon. Mt. Arayat is said to be the home of the goddess Mariang Sinukuan, which translates to "the end" or "she who others have surrendered to."

31. Mt. Gulugod Baboy (with Sumbrero Island)

Gulugod-Baboy actually refers to the hills that dot the Calumpan Peninsula in Mabini, Batangas. There are three peaks on the range: Gulugod-Baboy, Gitna, and Pinagbanderahan. Look out to Janao Bay, Maribacan strait, Mindoro, Verde Island, and Batangas Bay from the summit. Cool off after the hike and take a side trip to Sumbrero Island.

32. Mt. Nagsasa (with Nagsasa Cove)

Also known as Mt. Bira-Bira, Mt. Nagsasa boasts of the most picturesque views of Zambales. A crowd favorite, Mt. Nagsasa is doable enough for beginners but also delivers a fulfilling experience for the more advanced trekkers. Mt. Nagsasa leads to the idyllic Nagsasa Cove, where one can relax and swim after a long and exhausting climb.

33. Mt. Pamitinan

Although it will only take 1.5 to 2.5 hours to reach the summit, Mt. Pamitinan’s steep trails and rock formations will test one’s agility and endurance. It’s highly recommended for rock climbing and bouldering enthusiasts.

How to get to the Mountain Province

There is no commercial airport in the Mountain Province and most people who go here travel by bus or with a private car. The most visited town in the mountain province are Sagada and Bontoc. To get to these two places, you can take a bus from Manila or from Baguio. Alternatively, if you are already Banaue, you can also take a bus from there to either Bontoc or Sagada.

Mount Pinatubo

Mountaineers have a variety of reasons why they should climb a certain mountain. For adventure-seekers and professional climbers, the main reason is the level of difficulty of the hike. The more challenging the ascent is, the better. History-lovers climb mountains because of their rich past intertwined with their present state. There are some people who visit mountains that are mysterious and mystical, relative to their belief and religion. Whatever your reason is, I'm sure you'll find the right mountain to climb.

The Bagobo tribes of Mindanao have called this mountain “Apo,” meaning grandfather. It is the highest peak in the Philippines, with a height of 2,954 meters, situated in Davao del Sur. It is an already dormant volcano that has three major summits and a wide volcanic crater containing the crystal clear Lake Venado. It provides a difficult scale for climbers because of its thick mossy forests, steep trails, and giant rock boulders. Sulphur vents and deposits can also be seen throughout the area – a silent reminder of Mount Apo’s volcanic past. It is also a home of the Philippine Monkey-eating Eagle, the world’s largest eagle and the country’s national bird.

In June 1991, people witnessed the second largest volcanic eruption of the 20th century. It destroyed the summit of Mount Pinatubo and from 1,745 meters, it now stands at 1,486 meters. It is located at the intersection of Zambales, Tarlac, and Pampanga and has been a major tourist destination since the 1991 eruption. Although it unleashed a huge expanse of terror and destruction, its past outburst made the land around it more fertile. Today, valleys of ash can still be seen on the way to this mountain.

The villagers of Cordillera call it the “Playground of the Gods”. The 2,930-meter-high Mount Pulag is the third highest mountain in the Philippines and the highest peak in Luzon. Its land area covers portions of Benguet, Ifugao, and Nueva Viscaya, and it is considered as the center of the Igorot tribal culture. It is a popular tourist destination because of its close proximity to Baguio. It takes at least three hours to climb to the top, but the travel experience is very rewarding. This mountain lets people experience three types of vegetation – a pine forest at the bottom, a mossy forest in the middle, and vast grasslands at the summit which provides a breathtaking 360-degree view of the Cordillera. With good weather, you’ll see mountaintops over a vast ocean of white swirling clouds. Along the way, a wide variety of flora and fauna can be appreciated. Mount Pulag is the home of dwarf bamboo and Benguet pine.

Mount Daguldol, Batangas

If you can’t decide whether to go swimming or mountaineering, then this is the place for you. Mount Daguldol has a beach at its foot, making it a popular tourist spot. The trail is gentle and lined with rest stops, friendly locals, and cold refreshments. It also has a lot of streams and waterfalls along the way so you can cool off once you get tired of the climb. Its summit provides a view of Batangas Strait and the high mountains of Mindoro Island, plus a campsite which looks like a golf course.

Mount Mariveles, Bataan

The 2,465-meter-high Mount Kanla-on is one of the most beautiful mountains in the Philippines. It is certainly the highest and most active volcano in Visayas, showcasing its craters, cones, sulphuric vents, hot springs, caves, natural gardens, and mini forests. Most prominent are the enormous caldera on the north and a deep active crater on the south. Mount Apo is the most prominent and highest mountain in the Philippines with an elevation of 2,954 meters above sea level.  It has three peaks with the southwest peak having the highest elevation and is topped by a wide crater containing a small lake.  While it is classified as dormant stratovolcano, Mount Apo has actually no known historical eruptions despite the presence of volcanic rocks and volcano craters (solfataras) in the area.

Mount Apo, also called Apo Sandawa , is a national park and a protected area considering the hundreds of species of flora and fauna inhabiting this imposing mountain.  It is home to the critically endangered Philippine eagle , the national bird of the Philippines.  Over 200 bird species of birds, 111 of those are endemic to the area, also inhabit the mountain.

The mountain has four major lakes, 19 major rivers, 21 creeks, waterfalls, 2 geothermal plants, and 2 hydropower plants.  Conquering Mount Apo is probably every mountain climber’s dream but is best explored by experienced mountaineers and hikers only due to its elevation and difficulty.  Hiking the mountain takes 3 to 4 days roundtrip.

How to get to mount apo.

There are several trails leading to Mount Apo – Kapatagan Trail, Talomo Trail, and Sibulan Trail are accessible via Davao while Kidapawan Trail, New Israel Trail, and Bongolanon Trail can be reached via North Cotabato.

Via Sibulan Trail

Sibulan Trail is the shortest and said to be the most scenic. The entry point is Santa Cruz, Davao del Sur

Step 1 Book a flight to Davao City from your current location via Cebu Pacific Air, Philippine Airlines, and AirAsia. These commercial airlines have multiple direct flights to Davao City from Manila and Cebu everyday. Cebu Pacific also flies to Davao from Puerto Princesa and Iloilo at least once a day.

Step 2 Depending on your flight schedule and your itinerary, you can either stay for a night in Davao City or proceed to Santa Cruz upon arrival in Davao.

From the airport, you can reach Santa Cruz by riding a metered taxi found outside the terminal as they are cheaper than the taxis found at the exit. One way ride costs not less than P700 and travel time is around two hours.

Alternatively, you can also take a taxi to Ecoland Terminal where you can ride a bus or shuttle to Santa Cruz.

Step 3 Upon arriving in Santa Cruz Terminal, ride a motorcycle or tricycle to get to the municipal tourism office where you will register, get a permit, pay the required fees, and meet up with your guide. It is best to find a guide at least two days before your arrival in Davao so you have someone to help you arrange your itinerary and other things needed for the hike.

Via Kapatagan Trail

Kapatagan Trail is considered the longest trail to Mount Apo. The entry point is Digos City.

Step 2 Depending on your flight schedule or itinerary, you can either stay a night in Davao CIty or proceed to Digos City upon arrival in Davao.

From the airport, the fastest and most convenient way to get to Digos City is through a taxi ride. However, it costs higher so if you are on a tight budget, consider taking a bus from Ecoland Terminal. Travel time from Davao City to Digos City is around one hour and 30 minutes.

Step 3 Get off at Digos Terminal and take a van to Kapatagan where you will register, pay required fees, and arrange guides and other things needed for the hike.

Via Kidapawan Trail

It is best to be in Kidapawan at least a day before your scheduled hike.

Step 2 From Francisco Bangoy International Airport, ride a taxi to take you to Ecoland Terminal which is approximately 12 kilometers away. Fare should be around P400 ($8 USD).

At the terminal, take a bus via Mindanao Star or Davao Metro Shuttle. The first trip of Mindanao Star is at 3:00 AM and the last trip is at 8:00 PM with 30 minutes trip interval. Meanwhile with Davao Metro Shuttle, the first trip is at 6:00 AM and the last trip is at 9:00 PM with 15 minutes interval. Fare is between P150 to P263 and travel time is about three hours.

Step 3 Proceed to Kidapawan tourism office and pay the climbing fee, guide fee, porter fee, and others. It is best to contact the tourism office prior to your schedule so they can arrange your guide, transportation, and others.

The A irport Closest to Mount Apo

Francisco Bangoy International Airport (IATA: DVO), the airport closest to Mount Apo, is located less than 150 kilometers away from Mount Apo Natural Park.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit this attraction to avoid crowds is early in the morning, usually before 10:00 AM.

This attraction is closed from June to August .

In recent years, tourism has increased in Sagada because of mainstream media influences. Sagada’s local government has set requirements that tourists must follow before visiting the municipality. Additionally, visitors are required to pay the tourist registration fee (PHP 100 or USD 2) at the local tourist information office. Here are the travel requirements before visiting Sagada:

• Book at least a one-night stay at a DOT or LGU-accredited accommodation online. You can find the list of accredited establishments here.
• After securing your booking, your accommodation will provide an access code for registration through the Umali Kayo Tourist Registration Portal. Sign up and follow the instructions on the website.

How to Go to Sagada

Bringing your private vehicles is possible, but the most popular option is riding a bus. Here are several ways to visit Sagada:

If you are coming from Manila, you can take the usual route from Manila to Baguio City. You have the option to take a break in Baguio City before heading to Sagada because the drive to the Mountain Province is challenging. 

• From Baguio City, drive northward via Halsema Highway to Bontoc, the capital of the Mountain Province. Halsema Highway features zigzag roads, and some sections of this highway are located next to a cliff. The trip from Baguio City to Sagada via Halsema Highway can take up to 5 hours, depending on the weather and road conditions. You can check the local government’s Facebook Page for any updates about Halsema Highway.
• After safely arriving at Bontoc, you can drive westward of the city to Stauton Road. This road will lead you to Sagada.

How to go to Sagada from Cubao: Commute Option

This is the most popular method of visiting Sagada. CODA Bus Line provides bus transportation from Cubao Quezon City to Sagada, which takes around 8-10 hours.

Montalban Rizal is just a few hours away from Metro Manila making it an ideal backpacking destination for those who want to have a weekend of fresh air and escape the hustle and bustle of city life. A first-class municipality, Rodriguez has become a sort of "dormitory" for Metro Manila because of its proximity to the capital city. 312.70 sq. km., but only 5, 346 hectares of urban land from aggregate soil in seven lowland barangays, making it one of the most unusual urban settlements in the Philippines.

Tourists from neighboring towns and those from further afield are increasingly attracted to the growing number of inland resorts, making this a rapidly expanding industry. Rancho Luisito, with its zipline, big bucket, and waterslides, is a standout, as are Noah's Park's adventurous team-building facilities, Coco Mountain Resort, with its Australian surf camp motif, and Costa Abril, with its wave pool. Located on the banks of the San Mateo River, the convention center is the first of its kind in Rodriguez, Rizal.

The province of Rizal has become a haven for adventurers and mountaineers alike, especially in the town of Rodriguez. Montalban is truly blessed with gorgeous mountains mostly with jagged limestone crags and breath-taking mountaintop vista. There are about fifteen summits and hiking sites in Montalban, making it one of Rizal's most popular and frequently visited mountain hiking destinations near Metro Manila. These mountains may not be as high as many of their Sierra Madre rivals, but that doesn't mean the trails aren't hard.

Here is the list of hiking destinations in Rodriquez (formerly Montalban) in the province of Rizal:

1. MT. BINICAYAN

Elevation: 424+ MASL

Difficulty: 3/9

Location: Brgy. San Rafel, Montalban Rizal

Depending on your pace, the hike to the top will take you between 1.5 and 2 hours.  The hike is only 2.3 kilometers long, but the ascent and descent will take around 3 hours if you take your time and enjoy the scenery. The ascent and descent are both extremely steep, necessitating the use of proper trekking footwear. It's a good idea to have a pair of hand gloves because the rocks can be very sharp. Your Instagram feed will be awe-inspiring from the summit, especially if you climb early enough to catch a sea of clouds against the sunrise. 

This is a recommended mountain for beginners because it's not too difficult to climb. If you enjoy scaling rocky outcrops, this hike is for you. This is usually part of the trilogy trek (Mt. Binicayan, Mt. Pamitinan, and Mt. Hapunang Banoi). To have the best view of the sea of clouds at the summit, it is best to start trekking early in the morning. This mountain's features are its unusual rock formations and the thick fog near the peak. In the wet season, the trail becomes treacherous and requires a certain amount of maneuverability.

There is a 50 PHP entry charge per individual. The guide costs 500 PHP for a group of five. 

There are no water sources along the trail, so be prepared and make sure to bring extra drinking water.

How to get to Mt. Binicayan:

Travel to Eastwood Subdivision in Quezon City by taking the UV Express Van from Gateway Mall Cubao and getting off at the Ministop branch in front of the building. It costs around P50 via van ride. To go to the DENR Registration area, take a tricycle to Sitio Wawa and get off at that stop. This mountain is sometimes called Mt. Binacayan.

2. MT. PAMITINAN

Elevation: 426+ MASL

Location: Brgy. San Rafael, Montalban Rizal

The Pamitinan Protected Landscape, according to historians, served as a protected area because of its historical significance as a secret haven for the Katipuneros during the Spanish era. Historians claim that Andres Bonifacio uttered the first battle cry of Revolution inside the Pamitinan Cave at So. Wawa, Brgy. San Rafael, Rodriguez, Rizal.

Aside from its historical significance, PPL is also popularly known to spelunkers and cave enthusiasts because of its two popular caves - the Pamitinan Cave and Bat Cave. During summer, the Bat Cave becomes an interesting site for tourists who wish to trek across it. The Bat Cave boasts hundreds of stalactites and stalagmites and numerous ring stone dams that enthrall tourists and enthusiasts alike.

The PPL is also known for its ancient rock formations; Some of the Kinabuan, Angat, and Madlum. Some of the rocks were believed to be about 135 million years old. At the Kinabuan Rock Formation, the rocks are made of volcanic basalt and intrusive gabbro believed to have been formed during the Cretaceous Period of the Mesozoic Era around 70 - 135 million years ago. Meanwhile, the Angat Formation which existed as early as the Miocene Period of the Cenozoic Era dates about 20 - 25 million years ago. Lastly, The Madlum Formation, well known for Buenacop Limestone, dates back to the late Miocene age formed about 5 - 11 million years ago.

3. MT. LAGYO

Elevation: 396 MASL

Mt. Lagyo is usually paired with Mt. Susong Dalaga if you are doing a twin hike. This mountain features rock-climbing trails same as Mt. Pamintinan and Mt. Binacayan. The rocks are very sharp so you have to prepare gloves to protect your hands. 

If you want to try more exciting trilogy hike, you can do Mt. Parawagan (grassland) + Mt. Lagyo (rockies) + Mt. Suso ng Dalaga (grassland).

Popular side trip when climbing Mt. Lagyo is El Rancho Trail and Natural Spring . Go to Barangay San Rafael then just ask for directions going to "Sitio Lagyo". Turn left if you are in Acacia going to Mt. Lagyo. It is approximately 30 mins trail/walk from Ka Andres Store. Ask for directions on where you can find El Rancho. 

4. MT. HAPUNANG BANOY

(sometimes spelled as Mt. Hapunang Banoi)

Elevation: 517+ MASL

Difficulty: 4/9

Location: Brgy. Mascap, Montalban Rizal

It is well-known for its stunning rock and limestone formations, which blend seamlessly with the dense forest's diverse array of greenery. The Sierra Madre Mountains may be seen from this perch. The "older sibling" of Mt. Pamitinan and Mt. Binacayan, Mt. Hapunang Banoy (Banoi) is much more difficult, higher, and takes a lot longer to hike. The trail to Mt. Pamitinan follows the same route as the one from Mt. Banoy until you reach the junction where you must turn left (turn right is to Pamitinan). The rocky trails are dotted with bamboo groves. The view deck on the observation deck offers a stunning vantage point.

In most cases, Mt. Hapunang Banoi and either Mt. Pamitinan or Mt. Binacayan can be ascended as a twin hike. The sequential hike might be recommended by your tour guide if you indicate your interest in it prior to the hike. You'll of course, have to pay an additional fee for this. 

5. MT. PARAWAGAN

Elevation: 462 MASL

Mt. Parawagan is one of Rodriguez, Rizal's most demanding and beautiful mountain hikes. Brgy. San Rafael is located on the western side of Sitio Wawa and has a route that leads to the trailhead in Sitio Parawagan. Views of tiny streams, mixed forests, the Sierra Madre Mountains and the rolling green greenery along the trail's sides will greet you. You'll be able to see the La Mesa Dam Reservoir and Makati's skyline from a distance of about 6 kilometers.

If you're searching for a beginner-friendly hiking experience, this might be the spot for you.  It features one of the most straightforward routes, making it perfect for trail running. The good news is that the views from this easy hike are on par with the breathtaking views found on the tougher ones.

You'll be able to see the entire area from the summit, which is completely free of obstructions.

6. MT. MATAMIS NA LUYA

(Also called Mt. Purro)

Elevation:  545MASL

Difficulty: Minor, 5/9, 4-6 hours (ascending), Trail Class 1-3

Location: Brgy. San Rafael / Puray, Montalban Rizal

Also called Mt. Purro. This mountain offers a wide variety of flora and fauna. The adventure involves 11.5-hour trek, 8 river crossings, and rafting. The trail is mostly exposed with some loose soil and cogon grass. Narra and bamboo trees are also common along the trail. The descending trail sometimes has loose soil and rocks with streams along the way. Common wildlife are cows, goats, chicken, swift and crows but there are no limatiks.

You can have a view of Marikina, Anipolo, Tanay, Rodriguez, Rizal and General Nakar Mountain Ranges. It is recommended to wear sun protection - sleeves and gloves can be helpful. There are no campsite here. Always pass thru the required registration and secure guides. You may need special permission as this mountain is protected.

7. MT. AYAAS

Elevation: 627+ MASL

One hour from Manila, Mt. Ayaas is a convenient location to explore. From the summit of Mt. Ayaas, 627 meters above sea level, one can see the Sierra Madre and its adjacent peaks, such as Mt. Pamitinan, Mt. Binacayan, and Mt. Hapunang Banoi.  It is a gateway to the vast Sierra Madre mountain range that hikers cannot miss.

On the journey to the summit of Mt. Ayaas, you'll pass through rivers, deep forests, and open grasslands. While the mountain is suitable for novices because of its gentle slopes, it gradually becomes more challenging as you ascend the mountain. Hikers may rest at the summit and marvel in the surrounding mountains from the peak. 

Mt. Ayaas is the only non-limestone formation-type mountain among the Montalban Pentalogy (Mts. Pamitinan, Binacayan, Hapunang Banoi, Sipit Ulang, and Ayaas). This mountain also has the longest trail among all Montalban mountains.

The trail is mostly ascending with partly-shaded areas. As the heat might cause dehydration, it is recommended for hikers to bring plenty of water. If you're going trekking in the summer, be prepared to hike in the scorching sun all the way to the top.

Elevation: 340+ MASL

This mountain is the latest addition to the so-called Montalban Pentalogy turned Hexalogy. 

Mt. Oro's is known for its exposed trails, with only a few shady spots. If you've climbed Mt. Maynoba, you'll have a good idea of the trail's type.

This mountain's trail is ideal for first-timers because it is not primarily on assault and is only a short distance in total. If you go at a decent pace, you can reach the summit in 45 minutes to an hour and a half.

There are two summits on Mt. Oro, both of which offer a 360-degree view over the Rizal highlands.

9. MT. SIPIT ULANG

Elevation: 252 MASL

Rodriquez, Rizal is home to Mt. Sipit-Ulang. Great rock formations and limestone pathways have made it a popular destination in recent years. It has a grade of 3/9 difficulty and is only a short walk up to 252 MASL. 

For whatever reason, the name "Sipit Ulang" refers to a petrified huge crab's claw that looks to be reaching toward the sky (or crabs claw). This rock's vantage point provided a postcard-worthy view of Mt. Pamitinan, Mt. Binacayan, and Mt. Ayaas, all of which can be seen in the distance from the summit of the rock.

After crossing a small brook, the hike begins in a meadow and gradually ascends. The majority of the trail was surrounded by trees and plants, as well as rocks and narrow rock formations that were both menacing and eerie.

Passing through tight corridors between rocks and crawling up sharp rock formations were a challenge, but the experience of slipping and sliding through these passageways was both amazing and exciting. The variety of rock formations on the trails added to the beauty of the hike.

10. MT. LUBOG

Elevation: 955+ MASL

Location: Brgy. Puray, Montalban Rizal

Mt. Lubog is a very promising dayhike in Rizal. It takes about 1 hour and 45 minutes of hiking to reach the summit depending on your pace. It’s so much like Mt. Lagyo and other mountains in Montalban because of the limestone. The one thing that sets Mt. Lubog apart from the other hiking destinations in Rodriguez, is the thick forest canopy that provides cover to climbers until one reaches the clearing at the rocky summit.

At 955 MASL, the summit is a wonderful haven of rocks, where hikers can feel perched in one of the gateways to the breathtaking view of the southern Sierra Madre. The summit resembles a labyrinth of boulders and karst formations. This is one of the reasons why the summit of Mt. Lubog is also referred to as "Simbahang Bato".

Side trips include the Lubog Cave and the Panintingan Falls.

11. MT. BALAGBAG

Elevation: 777+ MASL

Location: Brgy. San Isidro, Montalban Rizal

Mt. Balagbag is a popular hiking destination because of its proximity to Metro Manila. It is part of the Sierra Madre Range as it transitions into the lowlands of Central and Southern Luzon. Easy and broad, Mt. Balagbag is also a popular mountain bike destination. Hikers who attempt this trek during the summer will endure primarily exposure to the sun - though locals recall that the peak was once covered with trees - which maybe now lost due to illegal logging. For this reason, dim trekking or early morning or late afternoon hikes are recommended. 

Some tiny waterfalls and rivers may also be seen on the road to Mt. Balagbag in Rodriguez, Rizal, which can also be crossed from San Jose Del Monte in Bulacan or other nearby towns. Aside from hiking, this mountain is also a favorite destination for runners, bikers, and 4x4 wheel enthusiasts. It's a great training venue for them before joining a competition. The trail is also wide so big cars can go up near the helipad.

12. ESPADANG BATO

Elevation: 455 MASL

It's not hard to see why the locals referred to it as Espadang Bato because of its highly pointed shape that resembles a sword. There is no doubt that this peak is one of the most popular in Rodriguez's mountains.

The distance from Barangay Hall of Mascap to this location is roughly 3.6 kilometers. Mount Sipit Ulang's trail forks to the south, about 1.5 kilometers in length, at the junction of the two trails. Espadang Bato may be found just beyond the junction, a prominently protruding limestone rock structure.

With a walk to neighboring mountains, falls, and summits, you can get the most from Espadang Bato. A typical day trek includes a trip to Mount Sipit Ulang and a stop at Payaran Falls as well.

13. MT. SUSONG DALAGA

Elevation: 325 MASL

There are many mountains in the Philippines called Mount Susong Dalaga or Bundok Susong Dalaga, which means "Maiden's Breasts Mountain".

Mount Susong Dalaga is a scenic viewpoint in Rizal situated nearby to Mount Lagyo. This mountain is usually part of the Trilogy hike - Mt. Parawagan + Mt. Lagyo + Mt. Susong Dalaga. 

The initial trails were relatively easy until reaching the grassland which eventually leads to the very steep ascent to its peak. This steep incline would actually make it harder for climbers to reach the summit during the rainy season. Mt. Susong Dalaga has a 70° assault downslope composed of loose soil with ridges on both sides.

Mt. Lagyo and Mt. Binacayan can also be seen at the summit of Mt. Susong Dalaga.

Mt. Susong Dalaga summit is just a small open space with no trees and can only accommodate a small group of hikers at a time.

14. MT. MAL-AC

Also spelled Mt. Malac (Mal-ak)

Elevation:  639+ MASL

Mt Malac is a perfect trail for those looking for a less-traveled mountain to hike, with the reward of a refreshing side trip to waterfalls after. The trail is a combination of grasslands ridges and minor rocky river trekking. Although the trail takes 2-3 hours to the summit, 1.5 hours to the waterfalls, and 2 hours back to the jumpoff, totaling 5.5 to 6.5 hours of walking on sometimes uncovered path, the terrain is pretty easy and can be dared even by persistent beginners. Mount Malac is situated southeast of Mount Cabuan, and north of Mount Caypipili.

The first part of the trail traverses the dry riverbed before starting the assault. The second part of the trail is the first assault with vegetation providing shade to hikers. Some parts of the trail can be characterized by burned grassland due to kaingin.

Some vegetation still served as shade from the scorching heat of the sun at the beginning of the ascent. However, close to the summit, the grassland has dominated the panorama with a few trees here and there.

The usual twin hike combination includes Mt. Macareba + Mt. Mal-ac with a side trip to Puray Falls or Baawan Waterfalls.

Hiking Mt. Mal-ac highlights a breathtaking 360 view of Sierra Madre Mountain with an option to do overnight camp at Mogul Peak.

15. MT. MACAREBA

Elevation:  535+ MASL

This mountain is also one of the less-traveled mountains in Rodriguez, Rizal. The trail is a combination of grasslands, bamboo, and narra covered forest. Trails are very muddy in the wet season. The hike features a view of Sierra Madre (Rizal) Mountain Range and the Manila skyline.

The usual event combination is a day hike to Mt. Macareba plus a side trip to Biting Uhay & Puray Falls. As mentioned above, this mountain is usually paired with Mt. Mal-ac for a twin hike.

Solar eclipse 2024: Follow the path of totality

Solar eclipse, what you need to know to watch monday's total solar eclipse.

A stunning celestial event is visible across the country Monday, when the moon crosses directly in front of the sun: a total solar eclipse. For those in the path of totality, there will be a few brief moments when the moon completely covers the sun and the world becomes dark.

Traveling for totality? Skip ahead.

This will be the last chance to catch a total solar eclipse in the continental U.S. for about 20 years, so here's what you need to know to safely enjoy!

When is the eclipse?

April 8, 2024 there will be a total solar eclipse that crosses from the Pacific coast of Mexico through the United States.

What is totality and why it matters

According to NASA , totality will start around 11:07 a.m. PDT/1:07 EDT in Mexico and leave Maine at around 1:30 pm PDT/3:30 pm EDT.

A partial solar eclipse will be visible across the contiguous United States, so even if you're not directly in the path, you should be able to see something special, weather permitting.

Where to see totality?

More than 30 million people live in the path of totality for Monday's eclipse, and many more in nearby areas.

Here's what we know about Monday's weather forecast.

Why totality matters

As NPR's Neil Greenfieldboyce explains , "During a total eclipse, the sky darkens suddenly and dramatically . The temperature drops. Stars come out. Beautiful colors appear around the horizon. And the once-familiar sun becomes a black void in the sky surrounded by the glowing corona — that's the ghostly white ring that is the sun's atmosphere."

Eclipse Science

For april's eclipse, going from 'meh' to 'omg' might mean just driving across town.

A partial eclipse, while still a fun experience, is hardly as dramatic. Those with a view of the partial eclipse will see crescent-shaped shadows like those seen here in 2017.

How to watch safely

If you plan to look directly at the eclipse (partial or totality), you're going to need eclipse glasses handy because looking directly at the sun without proper protection ( traditional sunglasses don't count! ) can be harmful to your eyes.

The perfect celestial soundtrack to the total solar eclipse

As NPR's Joe Hernandez explains, "Proper eye protection must be worn throughout a total solar eclipse — except for the roughly 3 1/2 to 4 minutes when the moon fully obscures the sun, a brief period known as 'totality.' (You will need to take your glasses off during totality to actually see it.)"

Traveling for totality?

The celestial event is driving a ton of domestic travel to the path of totality. If you're headed out of town to view the eclipse, here are some NPR Network resources for areas in the path of totality:

Texas The path of totality crosses through the Lone Star State, with some areas expecting a possible influx of visitors in the hundreds of thousands to catch prime viewing. Our member stations across the state have gathered local resources to help you navigate the region and the eclipse!

Arkansas The eclipse will be cutting through the state, putting Little Rock in the path of totality. Check out Little Rock Public Radio for local resources.

The southwestern edge of the state will be well-positioned to witness the total solar eclipse this year. Kentucky Public Radio is covering the eclipse throughout the region, from Kentuckiana eclipse mania to the University of Louisville's free class about the celestial event. Missouri The southeastern corner of the state will be in the path of totality, crossing across towns like Whitewater and Ste. Genevieve. Head to St. Louis Public Radio for local coverage and resources. Illinois Carbondale seems to have won the eclipse lottery, being in the path of totality both in 2017 and for this year's eclipse . Indiana A huge portion of the state will be within the path of totality, giving cities across Indiana, including Bloomington and Indianapolis, prime viewing of the eclipse.

Ohio The Buckeye State is getting bisected by this year's path of totality, plunging a number of the state's most populous areas into darkness for a few minutes on Monday.

• Columbus: With the capital city just south of totality, head to WOSU for regional resources.
• Cincinnati: Totality will just miss the border town. Here are some tips from WVXU on how to navigate the eclipse in the region.

Pennsylvania Only the northwestern-most corner of the state will catch totality, with views from the lakeside in Erie being particularly well-positioned for a stunning viewing experience. WESA has more from across the region.

Plan to watch the eclipse from a wild mountain summit? Be ready for harsh conditions

New York Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse and Plattsburgh will fall under the path of totality on Monday. If you're planning to travel to the region for the best views, here are some local resources to stay safe and informed:

Vermont The Green Mountain State will see totality across its most populous region, including Burlington and Montpelier, as well as the Northeast Kingdom on the Canadian border. Vermont Public has everything you need to know to navigate your time in the region to enjoy the eclipse safely. New Hampshire The northernmost region of the Granite State will be in the path of totality, providing prime viewing to those in Coos County. NHPR has info on local events, travel updates as well as special coverage with New Hampshire Public Television. Maine The last state in the path of totality in the U.S., much of Northern Maine will be positioned for prime viewing. The rural region is preparing for an influx of visitors, and safety officials are encouraging visitors and locals alike to be prepared. Maine Public will be covering the eclipse and has everything you need to know to navigate the region safely.

How to document the eclipse safely

With the ease of cell photography , it can be tempting to reach for your phone to document the eclipse and the moments of totality, but make sure to do so safely.

As NPR's Scott Neuman explains , "For starters, you'll need to wear eclipse glasses or similar protective eye gear while aiming your camera or even just observing the eclipse."

Feeling ambitious? Here are a few more tips.

Or if you're not inclined to capture the moment visually, you lean into some other forms of creative expression. Indiana, for example, has named Linda Neal Reising the official poet in the state for this year's eclipse.

As former NPR reporter and eclipse superfan David Baron shared with Life Kit , viewing totality "[is] like you've left the solar system and are looking back from some other world."

So consider focusing on being present in the moment to enjoy the celestial spectacle.
