long-awaited trip or much anticipated trip?

I think they are interchangeable. Both mean that you have been looking forward to going on the trip for a long time.

Thanks for your help Misterk.

RM1(SS)

I wouldn't say that "much anticipated" necessarily means someone has " been looking forward to going on the trip for a long time" - it just means that someone is eagerly awaiting the trip. If I told my family today that we're going to Scotland next week, that would certainly be a much anticipated trip!

Member Emeritus

Can you tell us the source of the sentence? If you wrote it: If it was anticipated or long awaited, why did it come as a surprise ?

The original sentence was "The good surprise of this school year was the long awaited trip to London" The students had been waiting for two years to go there.

heypresto

To me, the trip could be a surprise, even if it was long awaited. They've known for two years that the trip would happen some time, but it came as a surprise when they heard it would be tomorrow/at the weekend/next Tuesday/or whatever.

  • Jun 12, 2013

I see HeyPresto's point (assuming the trip was anticipated at all), but I think you're suggesting that the timing was the surprise. So this would make sense to me: The good surprise was the long hoped-for trip to the UK ... OR: The good surprise was the sudden announcement of ...

US Defense Secretary to make much-awaited visit to South-east Asia

much awaited visit

WASHINGTON - United States Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin's visit to Singapore to deliver the July 27 Fullerton lecture is seen as much-awaited affirmation of the importance of South-east Asia in Washington's Indo Pacific strategy which is increasingly determined by the US response to the rise and reach of China.

Mr Austin, a retired four-star general, will travel to Singapore, Vietnam and the Philippines from Friday, Pentagon press secretary John Kirby announced on Monday (July 19).

The trip will be the first to the region by a top member of the Biden administration.

"Secretary Austin's visit will demonstrate the importance the Biden-Harris administration places on South-east Asia and on Asean as an essential part of the Indo-Pacific's architecture," Mr Kirby said.

"This trip will underscore the enduring US commitment to the region, and our interest in upholding the rules-based international order in the region and promoting Asean centrality," he added.

On Monday night, Mr Austin tweeted: "Strong alliances & partnerships are key to supporting a rules-based order in the Indo-Pacific. That's why I'm visiting Singapore, Vietnam, & the Philippines later this week, & I'm looking forward to delivering the 40th… Fullerton Lecture on the evening of July 27th."

Many see the trip as not too soon.

This is the first visit by a senior US cabinet member to Singapore - where Washington has yet to nominate an ambassador. Mr Austin has travelled to Europe twice, and also visited Japan, South Korea and India.

This has led some analysts to wonder how much priority the Biden Administration assigned to South-east Asia. Mr Austin's speech next week will be closely watched in a region which many see as drifting into China's orbit by default.

This has not gone unnoticed in Washington. "For an effective Asia strategy, for an effective Indo-Pacific approach, you must do more in Southeast Asia," Kurt Campbell, the National Security Council's Indo-Pacific coordinator, said at an Asia Society event on July 6.

Mr Austin had planned to lead a delegation in June to the annual Shangri-La Dialogue, but the resurgent Covid-19 pandemic forced organisers to cancel the event. At that meeting, he could have also met China's Defense Minister Wei Fenghe. Thus far, Mr Austin has not met any top Chinese official, which many have interpreted as a snub by Beijing although there have been no meetings between senior officials on both sides since a high level dialogue in Alaska in March.

Currently the number two at the US State Department, Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman, is in Asia on a swing through Japan, South Korea and Mongolia - but not China.

Mr Austin's visit to Southeast Asia is welcome and timely, said Dr Satu Limaye, director of the East West Centre in Washington DC. "This is part of the Biden Administration's turn to Southeast Asia," he said.

The must-visit sites in Vaishali include;

  • The Relic Stupa, which is believed to contain a part of Buddha’s remains

Marking the beginning of another unforgettable day, you will be heading towards the India-Nepal border for the relevant immigration-emigration related work. The next destination will be Kapilavastu, where King Śuddhodana and Queen Maya are believed to have lived, as did their son Prince Siddartha Gautama (Buddha) until he left the palace at the age of 29.

Then it is time to experience the spirituality of Jetavana, one of the most famous of the Buddhist monasteries or viharas in India. It was the second vihara donated to Gautama Buddha after the Venuvana in Rajgir. The monastery was offered to him by his chief male patron, Anathapindika. The must-visit sites include;

The best time to visit Phuket: month-by-month guide

Located on Thailand’s breathtaking Andaman Coast, Phuket is the country’s largest and most popular island. Every year, it welcomes millions of visitors from all over the world, with over 30,000 visitors per day.

Phuket is also considered an ideal honeymoon destination. With countless things to see and do, many say it is Thailand’s best island.

Whether you desire to sunbathe on one of its white-sand beaches, go scuba diving or snorkeling, or simply eat some of the delicious food, Phuket is every traveler’s dream as it has everything you need for an enjoyable trip.

With so much to offer, it is tough to decide when to visit Phuket. While it is possible to visit the island all year round, heavy rainfall sometimes restricts access to certain areas.

Similarly, strong winds occasionally make some beaches too dangerous to access. But don’t you worry, we are here to tell you about the best time to visit Phuket.

Below you will find our month-by-month guide to this incredible destination which will help you plan your much-awaited trip:

Phuket lies close to the equator so average temperatures don’t vary much, but rainfall varies significantly every month, so this is the main factor to consider when planning your trip.

In terms of rainfall, January is one of the best months to visit the island, as the average expected rainfall is around 35 mm over a just a short five-day period. Also, temperatures do not exceed 32 °C, making the atmosphere dry and warm and therefore suitable for venturing out in Phuket.

January and February have similar average maximum temperatures, with expected highs of 33 °C. However, at 30 mm, the rainfall is considerably lower than the previous month, making February the driest month of the year.

With calm seas, and mostly blue skies, visitors have the opportunity to enjoy their stay without being interrupted by bad weather conditions.

The best time to visit Phuket: month-by-month guide

The average maximum temperature increases to 34 °C in March. However, spiking humidity levels mean the weather gets quite hot, which some visitors find uncomfortable and need to rely on air conditioning to survive the heat.

Although March does not see rain often, any rain comes in the form of short bursts, and the humidity is still high. The days are sunny and somewhat suffocating, so not ideal for tourists.

While April’s temperatures don’t reach more than 34 °C, it is still regarded as one of the hottest and most humid months of the year, and humidity levels continue to increase as the month goes by.

The only difference between March and April is that it rains a lot in April. The average amount of precipitation is 160 mm, which means rain showers are frequent.

But don’t worry, the rain doesn’t last very long, so it is unlikely to ruin your plans. Just remember to carry a light umbrella with you in case of heavy rainfall.

May’s average daytime temperature remains around the same as that of April, but nighttime temperatures drop to 29 °C.

The rainfall level stays at 350 mm, making the days very hot and the nights very wet and uncomfortable. As the month enters its latter half, the island is hit with the prime of the monsoon season and things seem to get stickier and damper. If you are not a big fan of mosquitoes, then possibly avoid visiting in July.

The average temperature in June stays at a high of 32 °C, with lows of around 24 °C. Like May, June also sees many days of rainfall.

What differentiates June from the previous months, however, is the fact that visitors must expect short bursts of heavy rainstorms and thunderstorms instead of light frequent showers.

Between the storms, expect nice sunny skies and cool breezes. However, if stormy rain is not your thing, visiting Phuket during June is not advisable.

July brings increasingly cool winds, making the outside atmosphere rather pleasant and much more comfortable.

Even though both the expected rainfall and the number of rainy days are higher than the previous month, the weather seems to be more bearable because of the winds.

The average maximum temperature lies around 31 °C. Popular activities for this month include swimming and scuba diving.

The average maximum temperature in August remains at around 31 °C, and the precipitation amount is the same as in July.

However, in August, rainy days are limited to ten days only, making it considerably easier for visitors to plan activities.

The rain falls in short bursts like before and is followed by cooling breezes which make both the inside and outside temperatures very pleasant and enjoyable.

The wettest month of the year brings heavy downpour, thunderstorms, and long periods of rain, stretching up to a whopping 19 days. The average temperature in September stays at 30 °C.

The rain is usually followed by intense periods of humidity, where the air moisture level peaks at approximately 90%, making it very uncomfortable to be in Phuket.

The weather seems suffocating and very difficult for the tourists to bear. Visiting the beach is also not the best idea as September’s strong winds make the waves go higher and higher, claiming a few lives each year.

The island starts to see the departure of the monsoons in October. Nevertheless, expect still to see 310 mm of rainfall in this month.

But since the rain stretches over 23 days, thunderstorms and heavy downpours are not expected. In October, you’re more likely to see light showers followed by sunny and humid conditions.

Beaches remain closed as conditions are still too dangerous; however, it is still possible to go fishing. The average maximum temperature remains at 31 °C.

Temperatures still do not reach above 31 °C in this month, but the weather is much more pleasant in terms of humidity levels and rainfall.

The monsoons are redirected and there are only cool breezes, making the overall atmosphere very pleasant.

Whatever remains of the monsoon falls over a duration of 16 days and rainfall does not exceed 190 mm. The oceans are open for tourists to sit by and relax.

The monsoon officially comes to an end in December, allowing those who are not so fond of the rain to come and relax comfortably on the island.

The humidity levels also decrease to about 70- 75%, further improving the climatic conditions, meaning less reliance on air conditioning, and more time strolling around markets and on beaches.

The average daily temperature falls as the month passes by, hitting at a low of 27 °C as December ends. Otherwise, the average is approximately 31 °C.

Conclusion – the best time to visit Phuket:

Deciding which time to go to Phuket honestly depends on what you want to do there. If you are after good beach weather, then December to March is the best time to visit as you’ll experience less rainfall and plenty of sunshine.

Expect blue skies, calm water, sunshine, and rare, yet bearable, rainfall during these months. However, for activities such as diving, visiting Phuket between November and April is recommended.

WATCH | 'India Unity Day' march held in 20 major US cities ahead of PM Modi's visit

Indian americans are holding 'india unity day' march across major us cities in order to welcome pm modi ahead of his much awaited first state visit..

Shashwat Bhandari

The 'India Unity Day' march is being held in major US cites including New York, Washington and others in order to welcome the Prime Minister.

Diaspora disappointed after Modi's community event scale curtailed

PM Modi's first state visit to the US beginning this week will include an address to the Indian diaspora at a relatively modest gathering in Washington DC because of his tight schedule, dashing the hopes of community leaders who had hoped to organise a gala event.

"Narendra Modi is the most popular Indian prime minister for the global Indian diaspora. Now he is the most popular world leader," said Bharat Barai, chairman of the Indian American Community Foundation, which had initially planned a mega carnival-like event in Chicago to rival the welcome the prime minister received at Madison Square Garden in 2014 and in Houston in 2019.

At both these events, and more recently in Australia, Modi was greeted by a rapturous crowd of tens of thousands of Indian diaspora, displaying enthusiasm and pride unseen before.

Modi's visit will have significant outcome, says S Jaishankar

PM Modi's State Visit to the US will have "significant outcomes", External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said.

Interacting with reporters on the sidelines of a function here, he also said that it will be the first time that an Indian prime minister will be addressing the US Congress twice.

Prime Minister Modi is visiting the US from June 21-24 at the invitation of President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden. They will host Modi at a State Dinner on June 22.

The visit also includes an address to the Joint Session of the Congress on June 22.

"The prime minister is going on a State Visit, which signifies the highest level of honour. So, the honour that he will receive, has been accorded to a very few people, so far," Jaishankar said after the function that was held at Badarpur in South Delhi as part of the BJP's mega outreach campaign -- 'Sampark se Samarthan' -- to mark the completion of the nine years of the Modi government."

"The prime minister will address a Joint Session of the US Congress. No Indian prime minister has addressed it twice. So, it will be the first time. World over also, very few people have done that... Winston Churchill, Nelson Mandela. So, there are very few people who have addressed the US Congress twice," Jaishankar said.

A Championship HBCU Basketball Team Finally Gets Their White House Moment More Than 65 Years After Their Victory

A championship HBCU men’s basketball team finally got their visit to the White House more than 60 years after their big wins.

The Tennessee A&I Tigers of Tennessee Agricultural & Industrial State University in Nashville made history in 1957, becoming “the first HBCU team to win a national championship,” and then “again by becoming the first college team to win three back-to-back national titles from 1957-1959.”

Mr. Barnett, George Finley, Ernest Jones, Henry Carlton, Robert Clark and Ron Hamilton attended a private ceremony on Friday at the White House, where Vice President Kamala Harris paid homage to the team during a round-table discussion in the Roosevelt Room, The New York Times reports. It’s now been 67 years since the team’s first national title.

“There’s so much that we have accomplished as a nation because of the heroes like those that I’m looking at right now,” stated Harris . “I, like so many of us, stand on your broad shoulders, each one of you.”

Finley said, “This is the greatest day of my life,” continuing “I thought this would never take place.”

“[Winning] the championship was big, but it wasn’t as big as being here with [Vice President] Harris today,” added Finley .

The team gave Harris a custom jersey following the ceremony and received a tour of the White House .

Their path to this much belated visit was not without obstacles. According to CBS , “the team was subject to a bomb threat on the plane during their return trip home from Kansas City following their victory at the NAIA (National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics) championship game in 1957.”

In addition, it would also take decades for the Tigers to get inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame . This honor was finally bestowed in 2019 after a years-long public relations campaign, which was covered in the PBS documentary “The Dream Whisperer.”

Progress on this front was made in January when Congressional Representative Gregory W. Meeks (D-NY) “led a letter joined by more than 50 Members of Congress to President Biden to respectfully request that he invite the surviving members of the 1957-1959 Tennessee A&I Tigers Men’s Basketball Team to the White House. I am pleased that my request has been honored, and that the Tennessee Tigers enjoyed a long overdue commemoration to honor their historic accomplishments,” per a statement.

“The Tennessee A&I Tigers men’s basketball team broke barriers on the court while fighting injustice off it.

In 1957, they became the first HBCU to win a national championship before becoming the first team to win three in a row,” Vice President Kamala Harris wrote on Threads. “It was my honor to welcome them to the White House for the first time.”

Barnett, who also played for the championship winning New York Knicks during the 1970s, has another upcoming celebratory moment later this year. On Saturday, during the Men’s Final Four tournament, it was announced that “Barnett will be inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.”

Tesla's CEO, Elon Musk, has confirmed his upcoming visit to India through a post on X (formerly Twitter), expressing his anticipation to meet Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi. This announcement comes in the wake of reports speculating Musk's visit and potential investment plans in India, possibly including the establishment of a new factory.

Musk, who has previously articulated his intention to introduce Tesla electric vehicles in India, is expected to be accompanied by other executives from the company during his visit. The meeting is scheduled to occur in the final week of April, although specific details remain undisclosed.

Looking forward to meeting with Prime Minister @NarendraModi in India! — Elon Musk (@elonmusk) April 10, 2024

Musk had previously met PM Modi during the latter's US visit in June last year, where he discussed his plans to visit India in 2024 and the imminent entry of Tesla into the Indian market. Musk's visit follows the Indian government's recent announcement of a new electric vehicle policy that offers import duty concessions to companies investing a minimum of USD 500 million in setting up manufacturing units in the country.

Tesla had approached the Indian government last year seeking duty cuts for importing its vehicles. In 2022, Musk declared that Tesla would not commence manufacturing in India unless permitted to sell and service its cars in the country. In the prior year, he had suggested that Tesla could establish a manufacturing unit in India, contingent on the success of its imported vehicles. Musk had expressed his desire to launch Tesla vehicles in India, lamenting the 'highest import duties in the world by far of any large country'.

Recent Comments by Elon Musk

During a recent discussion on X (formerly Twitter) with Nicolai Tangen, CEO of Norges Bank Investment Management, Elon Musk affirmed Tesla's intention to enter the Indian market. Musk highlighted India's status as the world's most populous country and emphasized the importance of making electric vehicles (EVs) accessible in India, mirroring the trend in other countries. "India is now the most populous country in the world. India should have electric cars just like every other country has electric cars. It's a natural progression to provide Tesla electric vehicles in India," Musk stated, underlining the company's commitment to contributing to India's EV landscape.

Every U.S. State will experience at least a partial solar eclipse today. If you want to check what time you'll be able to see the solar eclipse and find out what it may look like from your location check out this great interactive map from NASA .

A total solar eclipse occurs when the moon passes directly between the sun and Earth, casting a shadow on our planet. It appears almost exactly the same size as our sun and for those witnessing the event from the path of totality, it will completely cover the sun's visible disk.

Last minute preparations

If you haven't been able to get hold of a pair of eclipse glasses and are looking for an easy way to still view the solar eclipse safely we have a list of some alternative ways to view the eclipse with items from around the home .

Remember NEVER look directly at the sun. To safely view all of this event, you must use solar glasses or filters. Only those in the path of totality will be able to remove them briefly to see the sun's corona with their naked eyes. Those not in the path of totality must keep them on the entire time.

Everyone observing the partial phases of this eclipse — and for those outside the path of totality, that's the entire event — will need to wear solar eclipse glasses while cameras, telescopes and binoculars will need solar filters placed in front of their lenses.

Elon Musk to meet PM Modi on India visit, set to unveil EV plan

N EW DELHI: Elon Musk is set to come to India to meet PM Narendra Modi and announce a much-awaited plan to make Tesla electric cars in the country. The widely-speculated move was announced by the maverick but charismatic global business leader - who also runs satellite communications company Starlink and micro-blogging platform X (earlier Twitter) - through X handle, "Looking forward to meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in India!"

Musk will be travelling to India later this month and his visit comes during the peak election season. It will signal govt's success in getting a marquee investor to set up shop in India and help create jobs. After Apple's vendors, who relocated from China, Tesla is expected to be the biggest investment story for Modi govt.

Musk's visit had been speculated right from the time of 'Vibrant Gujarat' investor summit in Jan this year and became "more or less a certainty" after the EV policy for new entrants was announced recently. The policy offers import duty concessions for five years to companies that invest $500 million or more in setting up a manufacturing facility in India and source components here. The policy itself was announced days ahead of the poll announcement.

All indications point to Musk visiting India to announce his ambitious project, groundwork for which is being done for years. The project is likely to see Tesla commit at least $2-3 billion investment as it sets up a factory to manufacture entry-level electric cars (speculated as Model 2, notwithstanding the recent question marks around the development of the product), to be priced around Rs 25 lakh.

In earlier briefings of its plans with govt, the American EV maker - which is under pressure recently over the fall in its stock price (dropped by nearly a third in 2024) and sales slump - had indicated an aggressive capacity of five lakh units annually, fulfilling Musk's much-cherished dreams of an affordable EV.

An aggressively-priced electric car in a growing market like India will provide Tesla with ammunition it needs to quell investor discontent, while arresting decline in sales. Tesla will announce Q1 results on April 23, to be followed by investors call where Musk is likely to brief analysts.

Tesla (TSLA) to Unveil Its Much-Awaited Robotaxi on Aug 8

Tesla, Inc. ( TSLA Quick Quote TSLA - Free Report ) is poised to reveal its robotaxi on Aug 8, 2024, per Elon Musk’s post on X. The robotaxi reportedly utilizes TSLA’s latest vehicle platform. During a 2023 event revealing the company’s third Master Plan, Musk hinted at the potential of a Tesla robotaxi, even showcasing a fully concealed vehicle. A few years ago, Musk conjectured that Tesla owners could generate income by sending their autonomous cars for pickups and drop-offs. Several of Musk’s predictions regarding the actual availability of self-driving vehicles remain overdue. In April 2019, Tesla planned to start operating its robotaxis by 2020. The car was expected to last for 11 years and drive one million miles, helping the company and car operators earn a profit of $30,000 each year.   In 2015, Elon Musk told Tesla’s shareholders that the cars manufactured by the company will become fully autonomous within three years. In 2016, he suggested that by the end of the following year, sending one of its vehicles on a cross-country drive would not require any human intervention. Tesla is yet to deliver a technology that can transform its cars into level 3 automated vehicles. The automaker offers advanced driver assistance systems, comprising a standard Autopilot option or a premium Full Self-Driving (“FSD”) option.
