Introducing Tuath Scot
Tuath Scot are a Scottish trad band based in Glasgow. Blair Teska and Ross Macleod who are originally from the Highlands, deliver a unique take on traditional Scottish music. Tuath Scot have been taking the trad music scene by storm lately, make sure to give them a listen!
The History of Scottish Trad Music
A couple dancing to Scottish Traditional music
Scottish Trad Music has experienced a remarkable resurgence of late, captivating audiences spanning multiple generations. It’s not just a trend, it’s a cultural revival.
Blair Teska, member of Tuath Scot
Deeply rooted in Scotland’s cultural heritage , traditional Scottish music, often synonymous with Scottish folk music, encompasses a diverse range of styles, from ballads to reels (lively fast-paced tunes), jigs (quick, lively dance-tunes with a 6/8-time signature), and airs (slow melodic tunes). With origins tracing back thousands of years, trad music holds a significant place in Scotland's musical legacy.
Iconic Scottish instruments like the bagpipes have long been associated with this genre, with a legacy dating back to the 15th century. However, the musical landscape of Scotland extends far beyond the bagpipes. Scottish music can be traced back over 2,300 years ago since the discovery of Western Europe's earliest stringed instrument - a lyre-like artifact found on the Isle of Skye.
The first published traces of Scottish music are from 1662, when John Forbes of Aberdeen published the earliest printed anthology of secular music in Scotland, earning recognition as the first known published collection featuring traditional Scottish songs. Nonetheless, The Scots Musical Museum, published in 1787, stands as one of the most influential compilations of traditional Scottish folk music.
Today, one of the most popular genres of Scottish trad music, Celtic rock, has emerged from the harmonious blend of traditional Gaelic music and rock. It brings together the conventional sounds of electric guitar, bass guitar and drums, with the rustic charm of acoustic Scottish folk instruments.
Key Scottish instruments
Instruments are not just tools, they’re carriers of culture, tradition and familial bonds. Our wonderful instruments produce enchanting sounds of the past and have helped influence many bands and artists throughout the years. Here are some of our most iconic instruments used in Scottish music today.
Scottish musical instruments
Bagpipes
Bagpipes, a quintessential Scottish instrument, consist of, you guessed it - a bag and pipes! Bagpipes are one of the three national instruments of Scotland, along with the fiddle and the clàrsach.
When talking about bagpipes, we need to mention the Great Highland Bagpipe, an iconic symbol of Scottish musical tradition and a true testament to Scotland’s rich cultural heritage. This wind instrument, which consists of a bag, drones, chanter, and blowpipe, radiates a commanding presence with its resonant, stirring tones.
Tin Whistle
Closely associated with Celtic music, the tin whistle may look simple on the outside, especially compared to the complexity of the bagpipe, but it’s incredibly effective. It is often referred to as the Penny Whistle, reflecting a time when it could be purchased for just a penny.
Fiddle player in a ceilidh band
Accordion
A staple in dance bands and folk music, the accordion started appearing on the Scottish music scene relatively recently, but its roots can be traced back to Italy in the early 19th century. Swiftly gaining popularity across Europe, this instrument found its place in the heart of Scottish music.
Fiddle
In the early 18th century, the fiddle found its way into the hearts of Scots, becoming a beloved and popular instrument across Scotland. Fiddlers were at the heart of town and village life, taking centre stage. Almost every local community had its own fiddler, creating magical tunes for weddings, Ceilidh dances, and other special occasions.
Friends dancing to Scottish Traditional music
The clàrsach
Preceding even the bagpipe, the clàrsach (Scottish Gaelic for harp) holds the prestigious title of Scotland's oldest national instrument. It was considered the cornerstone of Gaelic country music, weaving enchanting melodies long before other instruments. The origins of this musical instrument go all the way back to the 8th century, shown through early depictions on Pictish stones.
Bodhran drum
Playing the bodhrán involves striking both the skin and the wooden frame using a beater or hand, depending on the desired sound. While rooted in Irish tradition, it’s commonly featured in Scottish folk music, providing rhythmic accompaniment for dances and tunes.
Contemporary Scottish Trad Music
Today, traditional Scottish music is not only surviving, but actively thriving. Contemporary artists such as Tuath, Elephant Sessions, Mànran, Capercaillie, Breabach, Hò-rò, and Blazin’ Fiddles skillfully merge traditional techniques with modern innovation, creating a dynamic and evolving musical landscape that resonates globally.

There is nothing quite like reaching out to all areas of Scotland with our music and are proud to represent the LGBTQ+ community with the richness and diversity of Scottish Trad Music.
Ceilidh dance
When diving into the vibrant world of Scottish tunes, you can't help but get your groove on with a Ceilidh dance! Originally, they were simple local gatherings, but later expanded and developed into literary entertainments with storytelling, recitations and songs. Instrumental music and dancing came after that to form what we now call a Ceilidh dance.
Modern Ceilidh dances are all about creating connections, building a strong sense of community, and, most importantly, having a blast on the dancefloor. Whether you're in it for the dance moves, the music, or just soaking up the good vibes, get ready for an unforgettable time!

Ed Miller’s Folksong Tours of Scotland. I will be leading two tours in 2024, May 26-June5 and June 16-26.
As of January 2024, both tours are sold out. If you would like to put your name(s) on the wait list in case there might be any cancellations, please let me know at [email protected]
Flights from the USA are overnight; so the latest you can depart is May 25 for Tour No.1 or June 15 for Tour No.2 You are free to arrive in Scotland before the tour starts or to stay afterwards; but we will rendezvous either at Edinburgh Airport on the morning of May 26/June 16, or at the Apex Hotel (Waterloo Place) in the centre of the city if you arrive on an earlier date. Arriving a day or two earlier is strongly recommended so as to counteract the effects of jetlag.
The cost of this year’s tour is $3600 per person, based on double occupancy. This price covers all transport and hotels in Scotland, all breakfasts and dinners, performers’ fees and entry to most historical sites. It does not cover lunches, tips, single room supplement ($750) or airfare. Direct flights into Edinburgh are available on United (fr Newark) and American (fr Chicago, Philadelphia or JFK); while several other companies have flights via London, Dublin, Amsterdam etc. Keep checking for any special offers.
Please send a deposit of $500 per person to book a place/s and full payment is required by 1 February. If you cancel after that date, I can only give a refund if I can find someone on the waiting list to fill your spot/s.
The basic aim of these tours is to give people the chance to enjoy and learn about Scotland through experiencing its music and landscape. You will meet and hear singers and musicians on their home ground, visit the contexts from which the songs and music have come, and have the chance to enjoy occasional hikes in both the Lowlands and the Highlands. This is NOT a search for the Scotland of Braveheart, Jamie Fraser or the Loch Ness Monster – rather it is a unique opportunity to learn about the music, people, history and landscape of this amazingly varied country in an interesting, personal and entertaining way.
Tour No.1 will include 3 nights at the luxurious Peebles Hydro Hotel in the Borders area; 2 nights in the Atholl Palace Hotel in Pitlochry on the southern edge of the Highlands; 2 nights at the Pearl Hotel in Oban on the northwest coast and 3 nights in the Apex Hotel in central Edinburgh.
Tour No.2 will be 3 nights in Peebles, 2 nights at Ardoe House near Aberdeen; 2 nights at the Atholl Palace in Pitlochry and 3 nights at the Apex in Edinburgh.
Some not-too-arduous hikes will be available in Dunkeld, Balquhidder and Edinburgh, with other activities suggested for non-hikers.
Some of the possible performers you will meet and hear include fiddlers Iain Fraser, Paul Anderson and Pete Clark, singer/songwriter Robin Laing; Jim & Susie Malcolm, bothy songster Scott Gardiner, songwriter Karine Polwart, Edinburgh-based singer George Archibald and Robert Burns expert Charlie Milne, as well as others still to be arranged.
Guide Charles Hunter and myself will also be singing and telling stories throughout the trip. Songbooks will be provided so everyone can sing along as we travel….. this IS a singing tour …..bring your voices and enthusiasm.
We can only accommodate a maximum of 35 participants; so if you are interested in joining the tour group, please send in your application form and $500 deposits ASAP to ensure a place . Once I receive these, I will send you a reading list, detailed itinerary and other materials.
A’ the best, Ed

If you have ever enjoyed Ed Miller as a performer, how about spending 10 days traveling Scotland with him as he shares his friends, music, humor and knowledge with you “on location” in his homeland.
Imagine hearing Border ballads in a 16th century tower, hearing Iain Fraser’s fiddle music in the Border hills; learning Gaelic songs from Margaret Bennett, singing sea songs in a fishing village or farming songs in an Angus bothy; joining in a pub session; enjoying Robin Laing’s songs of love and whisky; exploring the pubs, museums and shops of Edinburgh; or following the footsteps of Robert Burns. These are the kind of experiences Ed brings you on these very personal folksong tours.
Originally from Edinburgh, Ed has lived for several decades in Austin TX. He can, therefore, see his homeland from both a Scottish and American perspective. As a singer, folklorist (PhD), geographer (MA), radio host and amiable character with an infectious love and knowledge of Scotland, he is the perfect guide for such a tour.
The basic aim of these tours is to give folk song enthusiasts the chance to enjoy and learn about Scotland through experiencing its music, history and landscape. You’ll meet and hear singers and musicians on their home ground, visit the contexts from which the songs and music arose and enjoy informal talks and evening concerts.
We will stay in high quality hotels with wonderful food and will travel by luxury coach with an experienced driver and a blue-ribbon Tourist Board-approved guide.
Ed, guide Charles Hunter; fiddler Iain Fraser and our driver make a great & entertaining team – this will be their 23rd year working together.
The cost for this 2024 tours is $3600 per person based on single occupancy. This price includes all hotels and ground transportation in Scotland, all breakfasts & dinners, performers’ fees and entrance to Historic Scotland sites. It does not include airfare, single room supplement ($750), lunches and tips for driver and guide.
Due to the exclusive nature of these tours, reservations will be limited to 35 people.

Six Reasons Why Going To Gigs Alone Is The Best
So you want to go see that metalcore band you love but none of your friends like that “shouty” music? Or you REALLY want to go check out that new artist on TikTok you discovered but all your mates won’t go to a gig where they only know one song? Or worse, your group of friends cannot get themselves organized and work out which show and when to go on a tour, so you’re worried you’ll miss out on tickets. Let them be miserable and start living your best life by going to concerts by yourself. Trust us, it’ll be the best thing you’ll ever do!
Going to gigs alone can be daunting. What am I going to do with myself in between sets? Are people going to think I’m weird? Why would I not want to share the experience?
Listen, we are all for sharing the experience, but sometimes it’s either missing out or going alone, and in those cases we definitely recommend going alone. Here’s a few reasons why you’ll never regret it once you build up the courage to go through with it.
1 . See artists you really REALLY want to see
Imagine the FOMO of missing your favourite band on their new tour, hearing all those new songs live, seeing everyone post about it. Don’t let that happen, and get that ticket. Plus you then get to tell the pals who didn’t want to come how you saw that band or artist before they blew up or how they played that one B-side track that everyone loves – now who has FOMO?
2. Meet new friends
It’s no secret that music brings people together. That moment when everyone’s favourite ballad hits and there’s not a dry eye in the building, you turn to your left or right and suddenly you bond with a stranger over your favourite song. For the metalheads, we also recommend mosh pits, follow the rules of the pit but what a way to make new friends!
3. The freedom
Now hear us out – but going to a gig alone means you can get to the venue when you want, you can go to the loos when you want, you can stand in line at the merch for hours and no one will ask if you’re sure you want to wait. And no one will drag you home when you want to wait after the show has finished and find every piece of confetti or ask for the setlist.
4 . It’s a cult
You are not alone in going to gigs by yourself, you’d probably be surprised by how many people do the same thing. Some fan groups even have entire sub cultures of going to gigs alone (shoutout to Frank Turner’s solo armada, we see you!) – bringing us back to reason #2, new friends.
5. Confidence boost
Going to a gig by yourself will do wonders for your confidence. Sure the first time might feel a bit awkward and weird, but isn’t it always? Remember your first day of school? And then it was kind of okay after a while (let’s ignore our teenage years…) Once you’ve done it and experience all of the divinity of a solo gig you’ll feel free as a bird.
6. Experience the music your way
Whether you love hanging out by the bar, need to be front row, prefer seats or want to leave a bit earlier to catch the last train – the world is your oyster! The experience is yours, you don’t need to coordinate with someone else, rely on them to enjoy the show as much as you are and have as much of a good time as you are. And frankly, if you took a chance on a new genre or new artist and it isn’t your vibe, you can just go home. Glorious.
So there you have it – doesn’t sound too bad now does it?! At the end of the day it all comes down to you and your artist, a concert will always be a shared experience whether with strangers or friends. The most important thing to do is have fun.
Your next gig awaits
It all starts here.
Create memories to last a lifetime
Whether it’s your favourite band, an evening with friends, discovering new artists or the seventh show on the tour, we are your go-to home for all things live music.
Don’t miss out on the biggest announcement and keep checking back for latest news and last chance tickets.

"A well-informed, engaging and entertaining tour and narration of the evolution of Glasgow music and its characters. Have been on the Merchant City Tour twice with friends visiting from the US - it's been a highlight of their trips both times. The passionate guides are embedded in the music scene of the city so guests get the lowdown from the inside. Highly recommend this experience."
"A great city walking tour , with lots of info, amusing stories and interesting locations in the city's east end. A particular highlight was an unexpected visit to the Britannia Panopticon Music Hall which was just amazing to see....like stepping back in time! Our guide for the tour was excellent...very well informed and very entertaining. Highly recommended."
"A really excellent day out. Despite the constant downpour, it was a pleasure doing the 2 hour stroll through the streets with Alison. A very knowledgeable lady indeed. Fascinating to hear her stories (and those of our fellow walkers) and great to find some little gems of musical establishments we would normally have walked right past. Highly recommended."
"Really enjoyed the tour - great way to spend a couple of hours on a Saturday morning. Fiona the guide was excellent. Extremely knowledgeable, very enthusiastic and is deeply immersed in the Scottish music scene with great anecdotes and first hand experiences. Highly recommend the tour. Just listening to the spotify list shared after the tour which is a great bonus!"
"Two hours of fantastic information, stories and places to visit. Starting at the Clutha we had 2 hours of diverse information from Billy Connolly to Bowie and Franz Ferdinand to funny stories in the Panopticon. Fiona was a terrific guide who is obviously immersed in the Glasgow music scene. Lots of nice additional personal experiences. Loved it!"

College launches Taylor Swift 'masterclass' to get parents clued up
- Pop star will perform at Murrayfield Stadium between June 7 and 9
- Will YOU attend a Taylor Swift masterclass? If so, email [email protected]
Don’t know your Fearless from your Folklore? Then a top Scottish college has you covered after after it launched a Taylor Swift masterclass aimed at teaching parents and plus ones everything they need to know ahead of her Edinburgh concert.
It's not long before the pop megastar touches down in Scotland, taking to the stage at Murrayfield Stadium to perform her Eras Tour in front of more than an estimated 215,000 Swifties between June 7 and 9.
Ahead of her hugely anticipated arrival, Glasgow Clyde College is offering the one-time-only course to provide the full Love Story on all things about the tour to help the plus-ones of super fans have the best night of their lives.
From crowd chants to need-to-know information on each era of singer's career, the masterclass, which is being delivered by a Taylor Swift expert, will give members of the public a whistle-stop lesson that'll leave them ready for the gig.
Top tips will be shared around Taylor's iconic wardrobe, hair styles from throughout the eras and make-up techniques for attending the sold-out shows, as well as details on setlists and key lyrics.
Swifties have been on red alert since the global music icon announced her European tour last year, and based on Ticketmaster data, more than 2.9 million UK fans were trying to secure tickets.

It was recently reported that she'll break the record for the country's biggest show, beating Harry Styles who played to a Scottish crowd in 2023.
Of those attending, it's expected many will be taking a plus one along with them - whether that's a parent, sibling or partner - who might draw a Blank Space in Taylor's repertoire.
The one-off course will take place at Glasgow Clyde College's Langside Campus on May 7 from 6-7:30pm in the Innovation Centre.
Robert Anderson, Curriculum Assistant Principal at Glasgow Clyde College said: 'Taylor mania doesn't seem to be slowing anytime soon, and we expect it'll reach its peak here in Scotland in June.
'We understand that not everyone will be up to speed on all things Taylor and might not get the full Eras experience.
'That's why we created this masterclass - to prepare those who'll be heading along to the gig with their superfan kids, friends or partners to ensure they have just as memorable a time.
'Taylor's gigs are known for being so well crafted, and unless you're a fan yourself, you might miss some of the iconic moments.
'Our expert will take you through everything you need to know - leaving you a Swiftie in no time.'

We'll be back from 6am with all the latest from Westminster.
But until then, here are the headlines:
Ireland's prime minister has insisted the UK must respect an existing arrangement between the two countries to take back asylum seekers.
Simon Harris told Sky News the UK must honour a deal that has been in place since 2020 as a row escalates over the Irish government's new plans to return to the UK asylum seekers who cross the border into the Republic from Northern Ireland.
Irish justice minister Helen McEntee told a parliamentary committee last week that more than 80% of recent arrivals in Ireland came via the land border with Northern Ireland.
The UK government has said it will not take back asylum seekers who cross the border into Ireland "until the EU accepts that we can send them back to France".

Scotland's First Minister Humza Yousaf has resigned – days after he cut the SNP's powersharing deal with the Scottish Greens.
It followed a bitter row over the SNP's climbdown on climate targets as he said the agreement between the parties had "served its purpose".
As a result, his former Green allies teamed up with the Conservatives, Labour and Liberal Democrats to get behind two no-confidence motions, one in himself as leader of Scotland and another regarding the entire Scottish government.
Now attention turns to another SNP leadership contest and what the divisions in Scottish politics could mean for the future of the independence campaign.
On the Sky News Daily , Matt Barbet speaks to Paul Hutcheon, political editor of the Daily Record, and Shona Craven, from The National, about how the SNP can move on after Mr Yousaf's resignation.
Plus, Connor Gillies , our Scotland correspondent , explains how the leadership election will unfold.
The Sky News live poll tracker - collated and updated by our Data and Forensics team - aggregates various surveys to indicate how voters feel about the different political parties.
With the local election campaign well under way, Labour is still sitting comfortably ahead, with the Tories trailing behind.

The UK has sent the first failed asylum seeker to Rwanda - under a voluntary scheme.
The scheme is for those who have gone through the asylum process and had permission rejected, rather than for migrants who have illegally entered Britain by crossing the Channel on small boats.
The migrant was sent on a commercial flight and handed a fee from the British taxpayer to help relocate under the terms of a deal with Rwanda.
According to The Sun, the man of African origin claimed asylum in the UK but was rejected at the end of last year. He then accepted the offer to go to Rwanda.
He left the UK on Monday.

More than 2,600 seats are up for election in 107 English councils on Thursday.
Now, YouGov has made its final calls for some key contests using the MRP polling method after interviewing almost 9,000 people over two weeks.
Here, exclusively on Sky News, are the headlines...
Scotland's First Minister Humza Yousaf resigned yesterday in the face of two confidence votes after he dramatically brought the power-sharing deal with the Scottish Greens to an end last week.
How did we get here?
The Bute House Agreement - signed back in 2021 and named after the first minister's official residence in Edinburgh - brought the Green Party into government for the first time in the UK.
It gave the SNP a majority at Holyrood when the votes of its MSPs were combined with those of the seven Green members, and also made Green co-leaders Patrick Harvie and Lorna Slater junior ministers.
Without it, the SNP would need to have operated as a minority administration at Holyrood.
What caused the relationship to sour?
There had been mounting tensions between the largest party at Holyrood and their junior partners in government.
The Greens were angered at the SNP-led administration's recent decision to ditch a key climate change target.
That, combined with the decision to pause the prescription of new puberty blockers to under-18s at Scotland's only gender clinic, resulted in the Greens announcing they would have a vote on the future of the power-sharing deal.
What brought things to a head?
Mr Yousaf decided to pull the plug on the agreement last Thursday - arguing it had "served its purpose" - prompting a major fallout with his former allies, who vowed to back a no-confidence motion in his leadership proposed by Scottish Conservative leader Douglas Ross.
Scottish Labour also submitted a motion of no confidence in the Scottish government as a whole.
In the face of the two votes, Mr Yousaf announced he would stand down yesterday, but said he would stay on to allow a successor to be chosen.
Scotland's health secretary has been told the NHS is "not coping, GPs are struggling, and primary care is on its knees".
Neil Gray came under questioning at the Scottish parliament on Tuesday amid reports that the number of private GP clinics in Scotland has more than tripled since the COVID pandemic as patients have struggled to get appointments on the NHS.
Scottish Labour MSP Carol Mochan asked: "Does the cabinet secretary accept that by not adequately funding GP services, this government have overseen the development of a two-tier health system where the worst off go without and even those on lower incomes are forced to pay for them or their loved ones just to see a GP?"
In response, Mr Gray said COVID was the "biggest shock in the history of the NHS and its effects are still felt".
Nominations have now opened in the SNP leadership contest to find a replacement for First Minister Humza Yousaf after he announced he was stepping down yesterday.
Senior figures have backed former deputy first minister John Swinney for the top job, while a smaller number of the party's parliamentarians have backed former finance secretary Kate Forbes.
Mr Yousaf has said he will stay on to allow a successor to be chosen.
How does the contest work?
The SNP's national secretary announced nominations had opened yesterday at 11.59pm.
They will close next Monday.
Prospective candidates will need to gain the support of 100 members from 20 different SNP branches in order to qualify for the contest.
What happens next?
Whoever wins the contest will then need to be able to win enough votes in Holyrood to be elected first minister.
The SNP needs just two votes to secure an overall majority.
The most likely backers for the SNP would be the Greens, given both parties are pro-independence.
However, the Greens announced last week they would not support the first minister in a confidence vote after Mr Yousaf scrapped the powersharing agreement between the party and the SNP, which eventually led to his political downfall.

There might not be a general election just yet, but there are important votes that will define how the areas around us are run for the next four years.
