Travel to Ecuador/Galapagos

Travel to Ecuador/Galapagos Rainbow built an ideal programme which reflected perfectly my wishes. Local agents and contacts in Ecuador were efficient, had excellent communucation and everything on a four centre holiday went smoothly and without a hitch. Local guides were outstanding in every respect and accommodations in all centres were if high quality and exactly as described. This trip of a lifetime was excellent value for money and I highly recommend Rainbow Tours for their attention to detail.

Amazing Botswana

Shelley suggested a couple of loactions for my interest in nature photography and both were amazing in their own ways. I experienced a lodge in Chobe and a camp in Moremi. The service at both was first class and logistics of getting between locations by very small plane was smooth and efficient (with great views). The range of wildlife on display was fantastic - every game drive or boat trip provided unique memories. Would highly recommend.

Safari in South Africa and Mauritius

The trip we went on, Safari in South Africa and a week in Mauritius was fantastic. Everything knitted together very well. All recommendations by our travel advisor were excellent, having taken the time to understand what we were looking for. Couldn’t recommend Rainbow more highly.

Amazing holiday

Sarah arranged an amazing 3 centre trip of Brazil. First time to South America and it was beyond our expectations. We also had to move the holiday last minute due to personal reasons and Sarah was amazing at doing this. Iguazo Falls - breathtaking. Rio - safe city with lots to see and do Buzios - beautiful and relaxing. We would recommend Rainbow Tours and South America!

An excellent holiday to Panamá

Always had a positive experience with Rainbow

As on previous trips, we found Jack very helpful in planning an itinerary to suit us and happy to keep making tweaks until we got it right. We had a great time in Mexico and enjoyed all the places we visited. With hindsight we might have done a few things a little differently but on the whole the itinerary worked very well. And we appreciated the refund offered when one tour didn't live up to expectations (not Rainbow's fault, I hasten to say).

Can’t wait to return to Africa

Just returned from an amazing 23 day trip to Africa put together by Shelley from Rainbow tours. The whole trip involved 10 flights and visiting 4 countries. Apart from one or two very minor issues the trip went like clockwork allowing us to enjoy this wonderful continent. Great birding trip to Belize and Guatemala

Jack Brooker at Rainbow Tours put together a wonderful trip for my sister and me to Belize and Guatemala. He was very good at adapting the itinerary to our interests and chose excellent land agents to look after us. We had two great guides, the accommodation was not only comfortable, but also in good locations for birding and all travel arrangements worked perfectly. Cape Town & The Garden Route

We asked Rainbow to organise our trip to South Africa based on 5-star accommodation. Nikki did just that! The hotels we stayed in were 5-star plus and the two Guest Houses were also exceptional. If you go to Cape Town please do not settle for less than The Table Bay Hotel. Eating a sumptuous breakfast overlooking the harbour and Table Bay Mountain will stay long in the memory. Our desire to see the Rockies was put into the background by the stunning scenery around Franschhoek and the subsequent drive to Knysna along Route 62 - beautiful. St James at Knysna is verging on a 6-star rating and the boat trip in their launch on the lake with a wonderful picnic lunch was stunning. Our safari at the Pumba Game Reserve was so good - we managed to see all the Big 5 thanks to our learned guide Hedman. The highlight of a stunning and unforgettable holiday. Thank you Rainbow and in particular our heartfelt thanks to Nikki whose flawless organisation made sure we could really enjoy this once-in-a-lifetime experience.

An absolutely fantastic trip…

Our trip was absolutely fantastic and our experience with Rainbow Tours was excellent. Craig clearly knows Kenya and was able to share great insights and suggestions on how to maximise our time. He spent time seeking to understand the type of trip, lodges, hotels and experiences that would appeal to us. It was time well spent as Sands at Chale is the best hotel we have stayed in. A wonderful well organised trip

Wonderful tailor made Costa Rica trip

A friend and I recently had a 17 day tailor-made trip round Costa Rica. It certainly did not disappoint. Rainbow had arranged everything with the help of their CR partners Travel Excellence who could not be faulted. We stayed in seven different hotels/lodges, all delightful and all totally different, avoiding the worst excesses of the more popular tourist areas. Rainbow completely understood what we wanted in the way of wildlife experiences and accommodation options. Our hosts at the lodges were friendly, professional and unfailingly courteous, as were our knowledgeable guides. All transfers worked like clockwork. When the hiking/snorkelling became too much (we are quite elderly!) it was easy to either opt out or rest. All in all a terrific experience and thanks to Rainbow and Travel Excellence for their superb arrangements professionalism. Costa Rica is indeed a very rewarding destination.

Had a fantastic time in Costa Rica

Had a fantastic time in Costa Rica. What an amazing country. The trip was brilliantly organised by rainbow tours. They took my preferences and ideas to create a fabulous itinerary. The drivers and guides used were knowledgeable, friendly and so enthusiastic about their country. The small hotels we stayed at were perfect. Everything ran smoothly creating no stress. When there was an unavoidable delay to one of our transfer drivers we were informed immediately and a solution provided so we were on our way only 30 minutes later than originally planned. I have already recommended this excellent company to several people.

Tour Kauai Your Way

Your time here should be as unique as you are. With a small tour company, I can individualize your tour to match your interests and schedule. I create opportunities for you that no other tour company provides, bringing you intimate connections with the island, the culture, the history and the people of Kauai. 

Small Groups

Kauai Rainbow Tours is focused on small groups, typically 1-4 people, up to a maximum of 7. Tours start and end at your hotel, condo or rental home. Tour times are customized to your needs as well, ranging from 3 to 8 hours, depending on where you want to go and distances between. Refreshments or meals can also be customized: beverages and snacks, a picnic on the beach, local grinds (food), or a fine dining experience.

Advance Planning

Planning your tour in advance allows for greater possibilities and opportunities. In some cases, weather can play a factor in our plans, and flexibility may be necessary to make the most of your time. Also, please advise me of any special needs or mobility issues in advance so that we can plan appropriately for you.

Tour Suggestions

Here is a sampling of some of the places we can go and things you can experience. Your tour is always flexible as we explore the island.

Kauai has 50 miles of white sand beaches, each with its own distinct personalities and characteristics. We can find you a wonderful snorkeling spot and provide a picnic lunch and beverages. Prefer a secluded spot with endless ocean views? How about a morning beach adventure followed by lunch at an island restaurant? Perhaps sink your toes into the sand as you watch the sun set into the Pacific with a glass of wine in hand. Mix or match. We'll set up the perfect beach experience for you.

Canyon & Rain Forest

Take in the extraordinary views of Waimea Canyon, the “Grand Canyon of the Pacific,” with its dramatic red mountain ranges and stunning waterfalls. Continue onto Kauai’s rainforest at 4,400 foot elevation, culminating in the breathtaking Kalalau Lookout. 

Kauai has a rich culture and history that can be experienced in a multitude of ways, from a tour of Kauai Museum, driving through actual sugar plantation “camps,” taking a peek at a now-defunct sugar mill, strolling through Koloa town, where the first successful sugar plantation was founded, art walks through various towns. Meet with local musicians, as available.

Kauai is nicknamed “The Garden Island” for good reason. Tour nationally-renowned botanical gardens, including one that was architecturally designed and has been the backdrop for many movies. There you can learn the history of plants that were brought by Polynesians by canoe more than a thousand years ago.

Experience Kauai-made products including a chocolate factory, the largest coffee plantation in the United States, iconic Kauai dirt-dyed T-shirts, a microbrewery, gourmet salts, a cookie factory, pie baker and the manufacturer of specialty jams, jellies and other goodies from the lilikoi or passion fruit.

Sightseeing

We’ll take you to popular sights, such as the Waimea Canyon and the Kalalau Lookout, Tunnel of Trees, Menehune Fishpond and Hanalei Bay. Along the way we’ll teach you about island culture and history. We’ll also take you to a few special places known only to island locals.

PRICING & PAYMENTS

Pricing begins at $70 per hour for 1 to 4 people; $100 per hour for 5 to 7 people. 

You'll enjoy the island in the comfort of an all-wheel drive Subaru. We can conveniently pick you up at your accomodations, and drop you off wherever you wish at the end of your tour. Amenities such as a special occasion lei greeting, picnic lunch or beach chairs and towels are are available for an additional fee.

AMAZING DAY!

Don and I had Randy for our day on Kauai. It truly was a fantastic day. Randy met us at our cruise ship, right on time and even had a welcome gift for us. His knowledge of the island is only surpassed by his passion to share information on such a beautiful island. During our reservation process he asked what we were interested in and he delivered. He also had extra stops planned out if we were interested. Even though he kind of had a day planned he made it clear that this was our time and if we wanted to do anything else we were able. If you are heading to Kauai, either for a limited day stop from a cruise ship of you are there for several days please connect with Randy.

RARE & WONDERFUL

We feel so lucky we found randy!! He is a naturally caring person and knows all the great spots on the island. Waimea canyon in late afternoon was incredible. Randy also picked us up at 5am so we could hike up the sleeping giant to watch the sunrise. We also hiked the Kalalau trail to the end camped one night and hiked back. Randy also dropped us off at 6 am. My daughter hiked faster than me so she made it back first. Randy waited with her for me. (Who does that?) Randy is a rock star and we feel lucky to have met him.

MARVEL AT NATURE’S WONDER: HALF-DAY TOUR TO THE AMAZING RAINBOW MOUNTAIN

You will depart from Cusco at 03:00hrs in a tourist bus and ride for approximately 2 and half hour to get to starting point (4650M).

But before we get to that starting point, we will stop for breakfast, a healthy breakfast will give us energy to get our day off to a great start.

After a quick stop for breakfast, we will we continue our trip by bus in order to arrive to the starting point, where we begin the trekking for 2 hours approximately with direction toward the look point of rainbow mountain 5100masl, from where we have an impressive view of the Rainbow Mountain, Ausangate snowcapped (6375mts) in its natural form and mountain scenic beauties!!!

We will get enough time to admire the extraordinary beauty of this place, then we begin to descend for an hour to departure point, where our private bus will be waiting for us to take us to lunch place and then back to Cusco at 1:00 pm

Travel to Ecuador/Galapagos

Travel to Ecuador/Galapagos Rainbow built an ideal programme which reflected perfectly my wishes. Local agents and contacts in Ecuador were efficient, had excellent communucation and everything on a four centre holiday went smoothly and without a hitch. Local guides were outstanding in every respect and accommodations in all centres were if high quality and exactly as described. This trip of a lifetime was excellent value for money and I highly recommend Rainbow Tours for their attention to detail.

Amazing Botswana

Shelley suggested a couple of loactions for my interest in nature photography and both were amazing in their own ways. I experienced a lodge in Chobe and a camp in Moremi. The service at both was first class and logistics of getting between locations by very small plane was smooth and efficient (with great views). The range of wildlife on display was fantastic - every game drive or boat trip provided unique memories. Would highly recommend.

Safari in South Africa and Mauritius

The trip we went on, Safari in South Africa and a week in Mauritius was fantastic. Everything knitted together very well. All recommendations by our travel advisor were excellent, having taken the time to understand what we were looking for. Couldn’t recommend Rainbow more highly.

Amazing holiday

Sarah arranged an amazing 3 centre trip of Brazil. First time to South America and it was beyond our expectations. We also had to move the holiday last minute due to personal reasons and Sarah was amazing at doing this. Iguazo Falls - breathtaking. Rio - safe city with lots to see and do Buzios - beautiful and relaxing. We would recommend Rainbow Tours and South America!

An excellent holiday to Panamá

An excellent holiday to Panamá with three locations across the country from city to mountains to Caribbean island. Rainbow Tours ensured we were looked after every step of the way from airport pick up to final departure. Great hotels and excellent local guides for the various excursions.

Always had a positive experience with Rainbow

As on previous trips, we found Jack very helpful in planning an itinerary to suit us and happy to keep making tweaks until we got it right. We had a great time in Mexico and enjoyed all the places we visited. With hindsight we might have done a few things a little differently but on the whole the itinerary worked very well. And we appreciated the refund offered when one tour didn't live up to expectations (not Rainbow's fault, I hasten to say).

Can’t wait to return to Africa

Just returned from an amazing 23 day trip to Africa put together by Shelley from Rainbow tours. The whole trip involved 10 flights and visiting 4 countries. Apart from one or two very minor issues the trip went like clockwork allowing us to enjoy this wonderful continent. Costa Rica for Christmas

Great birding trip to Belize and Guatemala

Jack Brooker at Rainbow Tours put together a wonderful trip for my sister and me to Belize and Guatemala. He was very good at adapting the itinerary to our interests and chose excellent land agents to look after us. We had two great guides, the accommodation was not only comfortable, but also in good locations for birding and all travel arrangements worked perfectly. Cape Town & The Garden Route

We asked Rainbow to organise our trip to South Africa based on 5-star accommodation. Nikki did just that! The hotels we stayed in were 5-star plus and the two Guest Houses were also exceptional. If you go to Cape Town please do not settle for less than The Table Bay Hotel. Eating a sumptuous breakfast overlooking the harbour and Table Bay Mountain will stay long in the memory. Our desire to see the Rockies was put into the background by the stunning scenery around Franschhoek and the subsequent drive to Knysna along Route 62 - beautiful. St James at Knysna is verging on a 6-star rating and the boat trip in their launch on the lake with a wonderful picnic lunch was stunning. Our safari at the Pumba Game Reserve was so good - we managed to see all the Big 5 thanks to our learned guide Hedman. The highlight of a stunning and unforgettable holiday. Thank you Rainbow and in particular our heartfelt thanks to Nikki whose flawless organisation made sure we could really enjoy this once-in-a-lifetime experience.

What a fantastic trip, from start to finish. There were memories that will last us a lifetime. The organisation by Rainbows and Nikki in particular was superb! An absolutely fantastic trip…

Our trip was absolutely fantastic and our experience with Rainbow Tours was excellent. Craig clearly knows Kenya and was able to share great insights and suggestions on how to maximise our time. He spent time seeking to understand the type of trip, lodges, hotels and experiences that would appeal to us. It was time well spent as Sands at Chale is the best hotel we have stayed in. Perfect for relaxing, yet options for the more active. Fully inclusive was well worth it. Elerai Lodge was also a fantastic experience to see the animals Thanks Craig and the team.

A wonderful well organised trip

Wonderful tailor made Costa Rica trip

A friend and I recently had a 17 day tailor-made trip round Costa Rica. It certainly did not disappoint. Rainbow had arranged everything with the help of their CR partners Travel Excellence who could not be faulted. We stayed in seven different hotels/lodges, all delightful and all totally different, avoiding the worst excesses of the more popular tourist areas. Rainbow completely understood what we wanted in the way of wildlife experiences and accommodation options. Our hosts at the lodges were friendly, professional and unfailingly courteous, as were our knowledgeable guides. All transfers worked like clockwork. When the hiking/snorkelling became too much (we are quite elderly!) it was easy to either opt out or rest. All in all a terrific experience and thanks to Rainbow and Travel Excellence for their superb arrangements professionalism. Costa Rica is indeed a very rewarding destination.

Had a fantastic time in Costa Rica

Had a fantastic time in Costa Rica. What an amazing country. The trip was brilliantly organised by rainbow tours. They took my preferences and ideas to create a fabulous itinerary. The drivers and guides used were knowledgeable, friendly and so enthusiastic about their country. The small hotels we stayed at were perfect. Everything ran smoothly creating no stress. When there was an unavoidable delay to one of our transfer drivers we were informed immediately and a solution provided so we were on our way only 30 minutes later than originally planned. I have already recommended this excellent company to several people.

Nice experience with Vidal Expeditions and our guide Jose who showed us the best of Cusco. We purchased the services of this company and we were not wrong always very punctual and very respectful of everything. The activities, hotels and food were well organized. 100% recommendable.

Ausangate Nevada & Rainbow Mountain Trek – 3 Days

We did a three day trek. Ausangate is very beautiful with high mountains, glaciers, pretty lakes and this colours. We came to Rainbow Mountain before the hords of tourists came. And also time to see the Red Valley which is beautiful as well. It was like a private tour. The cook, the guide and the horseman served us well, nice and a lot of food

The Peaks of Ausangate

This tour was one of the best adventures I had in my life. The guides Eduardo and Herman are kind, knowledgeable, and were always checking up on me since we were at 16,000+ altitude. They know the terrain very well and we’re giving me history and geography lessons on the trail. We shared many laughs and stories together. Our mountain cook Jaime cooked delicious meals for breakfast, lunch, and dinner and was always offering me a hot beverage. Pedro our horseman always had my tent ready at the next camp! The sites on and around Ausangate are awe inspiring. There are way less trekkers on this trail than the others, so if you are looking for peace and calm, this is the trek to be on. We had to start very early some days and the. reward was seeing the crimson sky and sunrise. Overall this was a thrilling trek, one that tested my limits, and left me humbled and helped me define who I am. Totally recommend it to any adventure seekers!

Ausangate Trek to Rainbow Mountain 4 days

This was our honeymoon trip to Peru and Tourradar/Andean Path Travel company made it one of the best trips ever! My wife and I did the 4-day Salkantay trek to Machupicchu and We were extremely impressed by their professionalism, Our guide was Edwin, and he made the experience even greater, because of his knowledge of the inka history and helpfulness throughout the whole hike. We highly recommended this tour company and our guide Edwin.

We had an amazing time hiking to Rainbow Mountain with our guide Nico; he was very patient and well informed about the area. The driver was great as well. Food and tickets were well organized; we did not have to stop as the other people did. We also arrived early to the view point, and we did not meet a lot of people, which was great to enjoy the tour as much as we could. 10/10 for these guys; it's worth it!

What To Know For A Rainbow Mountain Hike

How long is the hike to rainbow mountain.

The trail is 7km (4 miles) along a sandy path. It takes around 3 hours to hike.

How difficult is the trek to Rainbow Mountain?

The trail to Rainbow mountain is moderate and not that difficult to hike. The difficulty depends on your fitness as well as how you deal with the high altitude. I would not recommend hiking to the Rainbow mountain if you aren't already pre-acclimatised (more on this below).

Can I get to Rainbow Mountain on my own?

Are there toilets on the way to Rainbow Mountain?

There are basic bathrooms on the route to Rainbow Mountain. You will have to pay 1 Peruvian sol to use these facilities. So, make sure that you bring change and your own toilet paper!

What Is Rainbow Mountain?

Rainbow Mountain is relatively new as far as natural attractions in Peru go. As recently as 2013, locals noticed a change in the mountain. Glacial retraction revealed ‘rainbows’ of orange, red, brown, and purple forming on the slopes.

After the first photographs hit the internet (thank you, Instagram!), Rainbow Mountain gained almost instant fame. Cusco tour operators were quick to cash in on the mountain’s popularity.

The first tours to Rainbow Mountain were in 2016. Rainbow Mountain is currently one of the best-selling day trips from Cusco .

However, the colorful slopes of Rainbow Mountain have a dark cause. Climate change is increasing the melting rate of ice in the Andes. All across the South American mountain range, glaciers are retreating further and further up the slopes.

The colorful display on Rainbow Mountain is a happy accident. The colors are a result of chemical reactions in the soil and rock - melting ice mixing with minerals, including iron sulfide.

Where Is Rainbow Mountain?

Rainbow mountain is in the Cusco Region of the Andes mountain range in Southern Peru. It can be reached by a 2-hour drive south from Cusco. The trailhead lies just beyond the small town of Pitumarca.

If you book a tour, you will be getting up around 4 am for an early drive to the start point. Most operators will make an hour stop for breakfast before you trek Rainbow Mountain.

Hiking Rainbow Mountain

The hike to rainbow mountain.

The 7km (4-mile) return trail to Rainbow Mountain is fairly flat. There is a very gradual incline until the last section where you walk upslope to the mountain.

This last steep bit only takes about 30 minutes up a steep slope. This is packed, hard ground and can get slippery if it has been raining, so please take measured steps.

On average, it takes 1.5-2 hours to reach the viewpoint at Rainbow Mountain. The return trip is all downslope and only takes an hour.

Please Note: If you are struggling with the altitude, you can pay for a horse ride. This trip will only take you to the base of the final ascent.

The challenging part of a Rainbow Mountain Hike is the altitude. You will be starting at an altitude of 4,300m (14,000 ft) and get up to 5,000m (16,000 ft). Even if you are very fit, the elevation can take its toll on you.

Best time to visit Rainbow Mountain

In the mountainous part of Peru, there are two distinct seasons:

• The dry season
• The wet season

The dry season (April to October) is the best time for any kind of trekking around Cusco. This is when tours to Rainbow Mountain are at their busiest too.

Strictly speaking, the wet season is between November to March. This doesn’t mean that it doesn’t rain over other months. I experienced brief thunderstorms in Cusco in August and September during my stay!

You can trek Rainbow Mountain all year round. However, I’d recommend avoiding January and February because of the higher chance of heavy rain during this time.

The shoulder seasons (April and October) are usually a good time to trek on Rainbow Mountain as you will experience fairly cool and dry days. There are slightly fewer crowds around these times too.

What To Pack (and wear) for Rainbow Mountain

The sun is intense, but even a light wind starts to feel icy on your skin. The solution? Pack for all weather possibilities!

Packing List For Rainbow Mountain:

• Bottle of water. Take at least 1.5l per person.
• Sunglasses, a cap, and high-protection sunscreen (SPF50+).
• Rain poncho or Waterproof jacket.
• Layered clothing, a warm beanie and jacket. You may want to take a colorful poncho, scarf, etc. for good pictures.
• Camera or cell phone.
• Toilet paper and hand sanitizer.
• Coca leaves to chew on to help stave off the worst effects of altitude sickness.

Wear trekking shoes with good grip . I’m a big advocate for trail runners. They are multi-functional and take up less space than traditional hiking boots in your daypack while traveling.

Wherever you go, always have some cash on you. Smaller bills are useful for tipping the guide or paying to use a toilet.

Altitude Sickness On The Trek To Rainbow Mountain

Rainbow Mountain is situated 5,200m (17,000 ft) above sea level. This means you are at risk of getting altitude sickness .

It is very important that you spend a few days acclimatizing properly. Especially before doing any of the treks around Cusco.

Please Note:  It is not a good idea to make Rainbow Mountain your first hike in Peru. Most companies recommend you wait to do Rainbow Mountain on your second day in Cusco. If you have the time, I’d suggest first spending 2 full days in Cusco acclimating to the high altitude before undertaking any strenuous treks.

Symptoms of altitude sickness include:

• Shortness of breath

Chewing coca leaves as you hike will help prevent these effects. The guides carry canisters of oxygen but you do not want to be in the position to need it.

What to Expect At Rainbow Mountain

There are a few things you can always expect on a trip to Rainbow Mountain:

• Peruvian culture up close 

Hundreds of other Tourists

You are going to see other people on Rainbow Mountain. Lots of them. In peak season, between 3,000-4000 visitors trek to Rainbow Mountain. That is one day!

Rainbow Mountain is maxed-out as far as tourism goes. Even out of the busy months, you can expect at least 500 tourists at this attraction. If you're looking for an off-the-beaten-track, this isn’t it.

You are also going to have to queue up for your photo in front of the mountain. If this sounds like a nightmare, it's okay to opt for a calmer day trip with less crowds.

Please Note: There are a few tour agencies that leave as early as 2:30-3:00 am. This is one way to get a head start on the crowds. That is, if you don’t mind sacrificing sleep.

Stunning Views

There is a reason this hike is so popular. Rainbow Mountain’s array of colors is truly beautiful!

The layers of browns, reds, and oranges are a unique sight that you can’t find anywhere else in the world. You will also have the perfect view of Ausangate Mountain and other snowy peaks.

Most tour groups only spend 20-30 minutes at the top of Rainbow Mountain. This is very short, but does give you time for a photo and a good look around.

Please Note: The online pictures you see of Rainbow Mountain are heavily filtered. In real life, the different layers are not as intensely colored as you may expect.

Locals In Traditional Clothing

You can also expect to see lots of dressed-up Peruvian women and Alpacas. For a few soles, you can even take a photo with them. From my own perspective, I’d recommend not supporting this type of interaction as it can be harmful from an animal-ethics standpoint.

A whole micro tourism economy has developed around Rainbow Mountain. This is great in terms of providing some much-needed income for the locals. The downside is that it creates a dependency on the visitors. The sustainability and site impacts could do with further investigation.

Alternatives and Add-Ons to Hiking Rainbow Mountain

Red valley hike.

Red Valley is the valley visible below Rainbow Valley. If you have time, you may take a different route back from Rainbow Valley through the Red Valley. If you go through Red Valley, it takes about 2.5 hours from Rainbow Mountain, most of which includes spending time appreciating the view.

Some people that have visited Red Valley say that it is actually better than Rainbow Mountain. This is because you have this scenic valley entirely to yourself.

Unfortunately, most tours do not have time to visit Red Valley after the trek to Rainbow Mountain. If you are lucky (and your group is fast), you may walk back this way.

If you want to see Red Valley, specifically choose an agency that has it included in their tour packages. You can also book a private tour or get there on your own.

Palccoyo - The ‘Other’ Rainbow Mountain Trek

If you want to see rainbow-colored slopes, there is a second option. Palccoyo is often called the ‘other Rainbow Mountain’ and is slowly gaining popularity as an alternative to Vinicunca.

Hiking to Palccoyo is much easier than getting to Rainbow Mountain. It is a flat pathway and is more of a leisurely walk than a proper trek. It is also a much shorter walk. It takes only 40-60 minutes to get to Palccoyo's viewpoint and the same amount of time going back. Palccoyo (4,900m / 16,076 ft) is at a slightly lower altitude than Vinicunca (5,200m / 17,060 ft).

A big pro of visiting Palccoyo is that there are fewer crowds and you can walk through tranquil Andean communities. Also, if you choose to go to Palccoyo, you will see three different rainbow mountains.

Sounds good? Then you should definitely consider taking this alternative tour.

Hi Alison, We reach Cusco in April 2024. We acclimatize ourselves for 2 days in Sacred Valley exploring Andes at 9,160 Feet – Sacsayhuaman & Pisaq Archaeological Site on one day and Moray Archaeological Site & Maras Salt Mines on another day. We are planning to do the KM104 Trek on one day. So, the next day – can we plan to do the Rainbow Mountain Hike? We are considering the alternatives between Huayna Picchu which is more steeper and Rainbow Mountain after doing the 7miles KM104 trek.

Hi Pavani, thanks for your message. Huayna Picchu is the mountain directly behind Machu Picchu. It’s a short (1-2 hour hike up and down) and can only be accessed from within Machu Picchu. Rainbow Mountain is a day trip from Cusco. It is quite a bit higher than the highest pass on the Inca Trail, so it is good to do towards the end of your journey. Your itinerary sounds great. I would do Rainbow mountain as a day trip from Cusco after you have visited Machu Picchu.
