This excursion was the HIGHLIGHT of our whole trip! Seriously a 'Bucket List" experience! We went to Kauai to specifically kayak this coast line. Annie...Where do I begin? She was the MOST positive, engaging, charismatic host. She truly had our best interest at heart. She was encouraging and compassionate, however she also let us know if we needed to be paired with others, she would over-ride our 'plan' but since we all worked well together, everyone just had the BEST DAY EVER!!

david and eric clevin

A huge mahalo to the group at Napali Kayak! We had a blast but more so gained an experience full of memories and feelings that will last a lifetime. This was such an adventure. The intense challenge was part of the 5 stars for us. We thought the staff did a tremendous job setting us up for expectations and performance out there in the open ocean. Annie's serious pep talk and dire warnings fired me up like I was going into battle, and I guess we sort of did battle our way through the most beautiful coastline in the world.

The whole crew at Napali Kayak are great, they are super friendly even bright and early before a long day on the water. I was lucky enough to have Captain Annie take us on the epic journey down the remarkable Napali Coast. he jewel of the trip of course was Kalalau, aka garden of eden. The most beautiful place i have ever seen. Fully in love and absolutely would paddle with this company again! Very professional, caring and amazing staff!!!!

Paddling through the water near the Na Pali Coast

We did the 17miles kayak day trip and it was worth every cent we spent! Annie and Nick were great guides, taking care of everything and assuring that we had a good time. It is a pretty long day out and be prepared for a sometimes uncomfortable seating position and some waves. But if you make use of the little breaks in between to stretch your legs and jump into the water, you'll be fine! And even if getting back into the kayak seems impossible to do, it is in fact not that hard. It was a great day and the coolest way to see the napali coast, and dolphins, and beautiful beaches! Highly recommended!

The adventure of a lifetime begins at the end of the road.

Napali Kayak invites you to join us for a sea-kayaking adventure along the emerald cliffs of Kauai’s Na Pali Coast.

We use the highest quality sit-on-top tour kayaks with rudders, Werner paddles and cozy seat backs. Most importantly, we specialize in fun! We also have the North Shore’s highest quality, lowest priced kayak rentals.

Why Kayak The Na Pali Coast?

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Na Pali Kayak (@napalikayak)

The Na Pali Coast of Hawaii is one of the most beautiful coasts in the world. It features towering cliffs, narrow valleys, rugged sea caves, cascading waterfalls, and secluded beaches.

This scenic and historic coastline is also featured in the Jurassic Park movies.

The best way to experience this mystical coast is by kayak. The only other option you have for exploring this wild coast is on foot. From a kayak, you get to see the pali, or sea cliffs, from an entirely different perspective and you can access sea caves and secluded beaches that are not accessible to hikers.

The kayaking trip along this coast is roughly 17 miles long and takes an entire day to complete. However, you can break up your journey and extend your trip by camping at one of two locations along the way.

Kayaking Kauai ’s Na Pali Coast is not easy. You will experience ocean conditions, with strong currents and high surf. There are also limited places to stop along the route: only two designated landing beaches.

To kayak this coast, you should have an excellent level of physical fitness. You should also be a strong swimmer and have some experience of kayaking.

I don’t recommend kayaking this coast of Hawaii if you’re a beginner, as this trip is a challenging paddle that’s best suited to advanced paddlers with sea kayaking experience . It also often requires several hours of kayaking without a break.

It’s worth mentioning that there is no cell service on the remote Na Pali Coast.

What To See When Kayaking The Na Pali Coast

As well as the stunning scenery, one of the main draws for people to kayak along this spectacular coast on the west side of the island of Kauai, is the abundance of marine life.

When kayaking along this coast, you are likely to see sea turtles as they bob their heads out of the water or swim along near your kayak.

Dolphins are also common sights along the Na Pali Coast, often jumping and playing around in the waves.

If you’re lucky, you may see the endangered Hawaiian monk seal, one of the rarest seals in the world.

If you plan to combine your kayaking trip with snorkeling, you’ll also have the chance to spot colorful reef species, such as butterflyfish and parrotfish.

Sea Caves, Secluded Beaches, And Coastal Waterfalls

Video: kayaking the na pali coast.

There are lots of sea caves along this stretch of coast, some of which you can paddle into. There are also several sea arches, carved out by the power of the ocean and volcanoes.

One of the famous caves is the Waiahuakua Cave, the second-longest sea cave in the US. You can paddle through this large cave and witness the Waiahuakua Falls, the waterfall that flows into the cave through a hole in the ceiling.

You can also explore an open-ceiling cave near Honopu Beach.

Honopu Beach is one of the secluded beaches you’ll come across as you kayak around this rugged coast. Waterfalls can be seen cascading into the ocean from the cliffs and around the caves.

Access to the beaches is not permitted. The only two accessible beaches for kayakers are Miloli’i and Kalalau.

Best Places To Kayak On Na Pali Coast

Ha’ena beach.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by @maskatei

Ha’ena Beach is one of the most popular launch spots for kayak tours on Kauai’s Na Pali Coast. This scenic beach is located on the north coast of Kauai and is a great starting point for the 17-mile sea kayaking trip along the Na Pali Coast.

Starting at Ha’ena Beach means you can paddle along the rugged coastline in a southwesterly direction so that you’re paddling with the current. This can be an easier route than paddling against the current heading north from Polihale Beach.

Because this beach is in Ha’ena State Park, you need to have Ha’ena State Park reservations to access the beach.

Class of Rapids rating:

Class I/II – difficulty depends on the ocean conditions. Easy conditions if calm but can be difficult with strong surf and currents.

Where to launch & How to get there:

Ha’ena Beach, HI-560, Kapa’a, HI 96746

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Volcano and Travel lover (@volcat2)

Ke’e Beach is a picturesque beach that lies within Ha’ena State Park, which means you need reservations to access the beach. This beach marks the start of the Na Pali Coast.

It can be an excellent place to launch if you have your own kayak. Commercial kayak tours are not permitted to launch from this beach.

With generally calm, clear waters in the summer, this can be a popular place for swimming, snorkeling, and sunbathing . The calm waters can also make launching a kayak a little easier.

The beach is sheltered from large waves by a coral reef. However, beyond the reef, the waves can often be pretty strong.

To kayak NaPali Coast, you can launch from here and head south to paddle alongside the towering cliffs.

Class I/II – easy to moderate. Generally sheltered waters close to the beach with stronger waves beyond the reef.

Where to launch & How to get there:

Ke’e Beach, Kuhio Highway, HI 96746

Polihale Beach

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Gabe Jacobs (@gabejacobs)

Polihale State Park Beach is typically the landing beach and exit point for paddlers having completed the Na Pali Coast kayaking trip from the north.

Launching from this beach means you will typically have to kayak against the current to paddle north along the Na Pali Coast. This will usually be more difficult than paddling from the other direction. However, the water tends to be calmer in general on this side of the island.

A benefit of launching at this beach is that you’re within sight of the rugged cliffs that make up the Na Pali Coast State Wilderness Park. This might be useful if you don’t want to kayak the entire distance or don’t want to stray too far from your base camp.

One trip you could do from this starting point is the five-mile paddle to Miloli’i. This can be a good spot to stop for lunch before paddling back on the five-mile return journey.

If you want to kayak the entire 17-mile route, I recommend you use this beach as your exit and start at Ha’ena on Kauai’s north shore.

Class I/II – easy to moderate. Easy, mostly flatwater in calm conditions. Susceptible to strong currents and surf.

Polihale State Park, Lower Saki Mana Road, Hwy 50, Waimea, HI 96796.

Best Time Of Year To Kayak Na Pali Coast

Generally, the only time of year you can safely kayak the Na Pali Coast is during the summer months. Because of the rough seas during the winter, it’s not possible to kayak this coastline at any other time of year.

Organized Na Pali Coast kayaking trips are only available in the summer months, usually between May and September.

Na Pali Coast State Wilderness Park only permits kayaking along the coast between May 15th and September 7th.

Even when paddling during the summer, the weather conditions can change quickly, making this route difficult and dangerous to kayak. Some sea caves and beaches may not always be accessible due to rough seas.

It can be better to begin your adventure in the morning when the winds and ocean conditions tend to be calmer.

Is A Permit Required For Kayaking Around Na Pali Coast?

You don’t need a permit to kayak along the Na Pali Coast. However, you may need a permit to land on some of the beaches and to access some of the launch sites in state parks.

You will need a permit to access Ha’ena Beach or Ke’e Beach. You will also need a permit to land or camp at Kalalau Valley, one of only two legal landing spots for kayakers on this coast.

The second legal landing spot for kayakers is Miloli’i Beach. The Miloli’i Valley can only be accessed by boat during the summer months. Kayaks can use the beach for day use without a permit. But you will require a permit for an overnight stay.

You can obtain a permit for Na Pali Coast State Wilderness Park online.

Kayakers are not allowed to land at any other beaches along the Na Pali Coast.

What To Pack For Kayaking The Na Pali Coast

There are no services or facilities on this part of the island so you will need to bring all your essentials with you. This includes enough drinking water for your entire trip.

It can be very hot at the landing beaches and paddling all day in the sun can cause you to become dehydrated quickly. Also, don’t forget your sun protection. I recommend storing all your gear inside a dry bag to protect it from ocean spray and capsizes.

  • Life jacket (tour companies should provide these for guests)
  • Drinking water or water purification tablets
  • Lunch and snacks
  • Change of clothing
  • Camping gear for an overnight trip
  • Rain jacket
  • Snorkel gear
  • Waterproof phone case
  • GPS device (if you’re not on a guided tour)
  • Marine radio (if you’re not on a guided tour)

Na Pali Coast Kayaking Tours

There are three outfitters on the island of Kauai where you can arrange guided paddling trips along the Na Pali Coast. These outfitters have the legal permits required to land passengers inside the Na Pali Coast State Wilderness Park.

Napali Kayak

Napali Kayak is based in Hanalei on the north coast of Kauai and offers two day-trip options for kayaking the Na Pali Coast: one full-length tour starting at Ha’ena with the final destination at Polihale; and one full-day trip from Polihale to Miloli’i and back. Both of these trips include opportunities to swim and snorkel.

Kayak camping trips are also offered, ranging from two to seven nights. Additionally, you can book a private guided tour if you want a custom-made kayaking trip.

All kayaking trips with Napali Kayak require you to be a strong swimmer and be in good physical condition.

You can rent kayaks and camping equipment from Napali Kayak if you want to embark on a self-guided trip.

Kayak Kauai

Kayak Kauai is located at the Wailua River Marina on the east coast of Kauai.

You can rent kayaks for exploring the calm waters of the nearby Wailua River for a few hours or you can rent kayaks plus camping gear for exploring other locations on the island. However, these rental kayaks are not for use in the ocean.

Kayak Kauai offers three Na Pali Coast kayaking tours on sit-on-top double kayaks with rudders . One tour is a full-day trip along the length of the Na Pali Coast from Ha’ena and one is a full-day round-trip tour from Polihale to Miloli’i. The third tour is a multi-day kayak camping trip.

Outfitters Kauai

Outfitters Kauai is based in Lihue and offers guided tours on the Wailua River and the Hule’ia River, with custom trips available for kayaking the Na Pali Coast.

You can also rent kayaks for use on the local rivers.

Final Words

Kayaking the Na Pali Coast is not for the faint-hearted (or anyone who suffers from sea sickness). This is a grueling trip with very few places to rest. However, if you choose to venture to this part of the island, you’re rewarded with some of the most spectacular scenery in the world.

I recommend booking a tour if you plan to experience this part of Hawaii by kayak unless you’re a very experienced sea kayaker. Launch in the morning and don’t forget your dry bags.

Discover the Napali Coast by kayak. This 17-mile Ocean Kayak Adventure begins on Kauai’s north shore and ends at Polihale Beach Park on the west side of Kauai. The day consists of a  12-hour day of coastal paddling, sea caves, plunging waterfalls, hanging valleys, secluded beaches, and caving. The Napali Kayak tour is an epic ocean journey. You will paddle beyond the valley of Kalalau , past the famous arch of Honopu, and into the turquoise waters of volcanic sea caves. While you go along the coast, you will paddle next to playful dolphins, sea turtles, and possibly a rare glimpse of the Hawaiian monk seal.

Kayak through an ice-cold waterfall that makes its way to the ocean from the mountains of Waialeale and paddle into a magical open-ceiling cave. Sit on top kayaks with self-bailing scuppers and comfortable backrests. Your kayak has a rudder, improving steering and forward paddling efficiency.

The tour is a one-way paddle downwind. At about the halfway mark on the coast, you can make a beach landing and spend a few hours discovering Milolii, have lunch, and rest for the remaining part of the tour. While at Milolii, you can beach comb, hike up the valley, and visit an ancient Hawaiian fishing village. The final destination is Polihale Beach Park. The dramatic cliffs of the Napali Coast meet the longest white sand beach of the Hawaiian Islands. Here, a shuttle van will pick you and your kayaks up, and you’ll be transported back to Hanalei with an arrival around 7:30 pm.

Amazing amazing kayak tour with a great guide company! We were the first boat tour out on the water this year and our guides Annie, Mitch and Mason made sure we had the best time! Super engaging. We felt safe and cared for the entire time, even though it was a windy day — rain, sun, rainbows, wind — we had it all. Long but super fun day of paddling in one of the most gorgeous places on earth. We got to go in a cave, the guides explained Hawaiian history and animal facts to us. Annie risked her phone and took some wonderful photos of us. Definitely worth doing!

Seems like they delete their 1 star reviews, so I'll try again. I'm sure all the '5 stars' are just friends and family..Ivan was one of the rudest people my family and I have ever had to deal with. Very belittling and impatient and bossy. He rubbed me the wrong way during the check in process in the morning and he just got worse as the day went on. The trip itself is very beautiful but the crew will leave you behind and you're pretty much guaranteed to flip over multiple times along the way. One flip of my uncle and cousin and they lost all their water for the trip because the clips didn't work. The equipment is overly used to say the least and the life jacket smelled of BO which was making me nauseous. On paper, this seemed like the trip of a lifetime, but it was far from it! Save your money and to the tubing in the caves or rum tour or anything but this! You'll thank me later.

Terrible!!!! Haven't had such a bad experience in along time! Our vacation was going amazing! Every tour and place we went to had 5 star customer service and we were really excited for this tour! We arrived early and were filling out the waiver. I filled out one section and my dad went to fill out the bottom. He put cursive where he was supposed to print his name (he's dyslexic and embarrassed of it) the guy in charge (Ivan) yelled at him and crumpled the paper and through it away. Told him he should of brought his reading glasses and to fill it out again. My dad does it right the second time and Ivan yells at him he did it wrong again and crumpled up and threw away the next paper. I go over after seeing my dad struggling and being yelled at and he fills it out the same way and it's all of a sudden ok. So we are off to a rough start but we were still excited for the trip and let it go. We get to the place and unload kayaks and supplies. Everything was rushed and Ivan was back to his snappy, rude ways. We were at this point told that we are guaranteed to flip multiple times and that we have until the first mile stop to decide if we are down for the whole experience. We get a quick crash course on the rules and instructions for the day. The instructors, Annie and Austin were to lead and follow us for the day. They should never allow 'beginner' kayakers let alone people who have kayaked recreationally. I soon realized it was going to be a lot more difficult than planned as my dad and I were sharing a kayak and the instructor took off. The whole first mile I did not feel safe or that if anything were to happen that the instructors would even be able to help us. After the mile 4 of us in our group decided to tap out. Here we meet Ivan again. He doesn't hesitate to belittle us and say he's never had this many people quit and that now our sandwiches will be enough for the people who kept going to have two. We drag our kayaks up and he tells us we need to hurry because he's parked where he isn't supposed to be...he looks up to the lifeguards who had been friendly to us as well and says ' you guys ever seen this many people quit at once?' . I wished at this point that we'd just kept paddling so we didn't have to deal with his rudeness anymore! We go to wash the sand off our feet because he didn't want us 'dirtying' his van. As we walk by we hear 'Mayday!! Mayday!!' Ivan is without his walkie and the crew members were trying to contact him for help. We go and tell him his walkie is going off and they're yelling 'Mayday' he said they don't do that and went to the van and sure enough ... 'mayday!' My uncle and cousin who were pressing on had flipped twice and my cousins water for the day had broke free and my uncle couldn't get back in the kayak on his own. He's in great shape just over 6ft tall so he needed help. He said he was yelling to Austin(one of the guides) to help him and Austin was yelling at him to just get n the boat... he finally realized my uncle wasn't 'pretending' and came over and helped him back in. They begged him to be able to turn around and quit. They paddled back and Ivan say them and started with his rude antics again saying they shouldn't of continued and that they didn't have a clue of what they were doing. They aren't beginners and they allow beginners on this trip... I just don't get it. I'm not sure how this happened 5stars minus for the views and the experience minus the staff. We didn't get our money back or the pictures of us that were part of the tour. The whole drive back Ivan was having road rage with multiple drivers. He recommended us to do easier paddles in the bay for beginners at this point. We were done. My dad was so upset about the experience and my uncle was very disappointed as well. I can't believe they let Ivan stay there and be the 'face' of the company. Would of been nice to get a refund but also we just wanted to not send Ivan over the top anymore than he was. The experience gave us a lot to talk about, but nothing positive. I'm thinking most these posts are their family to help with reviews. Hoping people read this entire review and don't make the same mistake we did! Mahalo!

Props to Ivan, Ahja(sp?), Mitch, and Matty. Was a little nervous going in, but we paddled the coast safely and had plenty of time to take it in and take a dip. Why spend your money on a big boat or copter zipping by when you can immerse yourself in the water and interact with nature. Thanks for a great time, highly recommend if you're on the fence (you can do it)!

Napali Kayak is THE place to go for Na Pali Coast kayaking tours! Seriously: not only do Ivan and Josh care about making your kayak adventure the best experience possible, but they really want to tailor it as much to your needs as plausible (difficult, at best, for a family of four from Chicago!). It's also clear that they really care about Kaua'i, and honoring the beautiful paradise that the Garden Island is. Napoli Kayak has been in business for almost 20 years; through the thick and the thin - they're reliable, responsive and responsible. Napali Kayak should be your first choice for kayaking tours / rental in Kaua'i!

What a wonderful adventure. The weather was perfect and we got to see all the awesome caves. It is a long day, and isn't for the faint of heart.... take anti nausea meds... it helped alot. The crew, I'm not sure if we have ever met better people. They were so helpful nice...and even funny. They made the 17 mile paddle interesting and fun. This was a bucket list item for my husband and me, lifelong kayakers...this was a level up for sure for us. Beautiful scenery and funny Dad Jokes along the way made this a great day. Highly recommend this team if you are choosing to adventure in kayak on the Napali Coast.

Our family of 6 had an amazing time on the Napali Coast Kayak trip. Sadie and Mitch were our guides and Sadie told us all the stories about the various caves, Hawaiian history and made it a fun 17 mi trek. We would highly recommend this experience for any adventurous family/individuals. Memories for a lifetime

Spent the day with Sadie and Mitch from Napali Kayak doing a father and daughter trip. They were awesome guides. Never felt unsafe, both were excellent with the history of the ancient Hawaiians, and both provided an excellent tour of the many caves that we explored. The scenery was spectacular. Definitely recommend it to all who have a love for exploring and a desire for an epic adventure. Mahalo Gene and Gigi Fischer

What a day! This trip is full of amazing scenery, truly knowledgable guides, and 17 miles of bliss on the water. We highly recommend Napali Kayak tours as part of time spent on Kauai. It was spectacular! Thanks to Ivan, Annie, Sadie, Jeffrey, and Jake - y'all made the experience the best experience! Mahalo from Buddy and Sheila

We booked kayaks to camp kalalau as soon as we were able to get our camping permits locked in. The week before, we watched the surf report, which was consistent the whole week for our launch and landing dates. Part way through, josh was teetering on having us go out, but on Tuesday, he said it looked fine. Come Friday, we dropped by the shop to get everything finalized, and suddenly he was back to oh surf is too high, and suddenly he and Ivan were talking about "7 foot waves." The forecast was exactly the same as it had been before. 3.5 ft waves with single digit winds and 10s swells, which is actually on the low side for swells. It was pretty clear what the issue was when josh asked us if we had men coming with us. Suddenly, we were inexperienced girls who say "woo" just looking for an easy downwind paddle. His solution was for these same girls who came prepared to kayak to instead go on one of the most dangerous hikes in the world. I consider myself a novice hiker, and I certainly didn't bring my best hiking shoes to kayak. But I made it up and down 14 miles of hills with a 60L pack on one of the world's most dangerous hikes. I consider myself an advanced paddler, and with the benefits of paddle tracking technology, I have objective proof to back it up. We volunteered this along with the fact that we had other advanced paddlers to demonstrate and then guide any others who might need extra direction on certain parts. I went in well aware surf might be big and I couldn't predict exact conditions. We were all prepared to tackle unexpected waves, winds, etc as an expected part of the deal. It didn't matter because all josh and Ivan saw were little girls who they apparently also thought couldn't read a basic surf report. I've attached multiple surf reports for the day they thought was so "unsafe." Being that they're currently the only ones running kayak tours on na pali specifically, it's a pretty good bet it was them sending groups out on Saturday (when the surf was 1/2 a foot higher, and I told my group we'd be staying put all day) and Monday (when the surf was about the same, but the winds were 10mph higher and would potentially make conditions worse). It was never about safety. Attached are the "7 foot waves" and the day's surf reports, which were actually 3.5 (or about upper waist to chest high depending on your height).

Napali Kayak Tours

  • Staff review
  • Photos ( 22 )

Napali Kayak's gold standard is their all-day guided kayak tour of the Napali Coast, and it doesn't disappoint. Expect a full day of adventure on the open water, with a landing at a remote state park accessible only by boat or helicopter. Excellent guides and staff make the entire experience memorable and stress-free.

Some companies tend to make exaggerated claims. But when Napali Kayak promises an epic, unforgettable adventure, they deliver. Napali Kayaks offers rentals of a wide variety of kayaks, SUPs, and outdoor equipment, but their hallmark offering is their guided tour of the Napali Coastline. Get up close and personal views of those emerald-carved cliffs, and you might discover your new favorite place in the world.

The full tour, called the Ha’ena Napali Coast Tour on their website, covers 17 miles of paddling, and it traverses some of the world’s most scenic waters. This tour is only recommended for young adults/adults aged 15 and up. Previous paddling experience isn’t required, as long as you’re healthy and highly motivated to learn. You do need a decent level of physical fitness; paddling for several hours on the open ocean is no joke. This tour includes a landing at a state park accessible only by air or water. You’ll land your kayaks there, enjoy lunch and a stroll in the state park–or a nap, whatever suits your fancy, before heading back.

Of course, shorter tours are available. The Polihale guided tour is a bit shorter, at only 10-12 total miles of paddling. This tour goes from Polihale to Milolii, and it spans smoother, less turbulent waters on the island’s leeward side. This trip will be easier for travelers who are prone to seasickness, but it still offers stunning views and an opportunity to dip into the water at will.

Guided tours require an early morning check-in: 4:45 am for tours departing from the Hanalei headquarters and 6:30 am for those departing from Waimea Town’s west side, and they typically provide a tasty lunch–an option of a couple of different sandwiches, along with cold fruit. You’re expected to supply your own water, though (preferably at least 3 liters for an all-day trip), and you’ll definitely want a waterproof camera along for the ride. It would be a good idea to pack along with a few energy bars or some sort of sealed snack to have on hand. Though it’s not required, a roll-top dry bag will come in handy here for stowing your stuff!

Expect knowledgeable local guides who actually love what they do and who love introducing visitors to Kauai’s flora and fauna. Many visitors say that the guides were one of the best parts of the trip. They’re fun, helpful, and have a great sense of humor–all very important when spending an entire day with someone new!

Not sure you’re up for such a long paddle? You can always rent a kayak or SUP and explore some of Kauai’s calmer waters on your own. Stop by headquarters or give them a call, and the Napali Kayaks staff can set you up with the gear you need along with information on the best waterways to explore.

Insider Tips: -Keep in mind when planning your trip that the season for visiting the Napali Coast’s waters is limited; Napali Kayaks only leads tours from April 15-October 15. During the winter months, those waters turn into a big-wave surfer’s dream; not ideal for the average paddler.  -Feeling extra adventurous? Consider a guided camping trip with Napali Kayaks and spend the night under the stars on one of the most remote parts of the island.

The Na Pali Coast of Kauai: 3 Ways to Visit (+ Best 2024 Tours!)

Is the Na Pali Coast at the top of your Kauai bucket list? Read on to discover how to visit the jaw-dropping Na Pali coastline in Kauai!

Stretching for 17 sensational miles along the northwestern coast of Kauai, the Na Pali Coast is home to some of the most beautiful landscapes you’ll see anywhere on the planet, and is one of the best places to visit in Hawaii .

Experiencing the beauty of the Na Pali Coast is without a doubt one of the top things to do in Kauai .

You’ve probably seen the jagged spires of the nā pali (“many cliffs” in Hawaiian) rising up beside the turquoise waters of the Pacific Ocean in photos online — the Na Pali Coast is one of the most photographed places in Hawaii.

With their red, pink, and rust hues contrasting with the rich emerald or light green on the slopes and valleys, the towering coastal cliffs are dramatic, if a little forbidding, in their beauty.

Some of the cliffs rise up almost straight up, as much as 4,000 feet above the ocean.

In between the cliffs are impossibly narrow, and lush, valleys. Incredibly, they were once settled.

The Hawaiians that lived here cultivated taro and other crops on terraces cut into the hillsides, and fished to supplement their diet.

They also traded with other communities, using outrigger canoes to venture out in the summertime when the waters are calmer. The only other way of transport in and out of the valleys was via strenuous foot trails.

Sadly, the population here was drastically impacted by diseases brought in by foreigners, and eventually the Hawaiians that were left on the coast departed for other places, attracted by the potential for an easier lifestyle elsewhere.

Today, even though it is remote, the Na Pali Coast is one of the bucket-list destinations for travelers to Kauai.

The towering cliffs, verdant valleys, beautiful waterfalls, pristine beaches, and picturesque sea arches and caves of the Na Pali Coast are irresistible to anyone that loves the majesty of nature.

The Honopu Arch along the Na Pali Coast in Kauai, Hawaii

For visitors that arrive by boat, or even hikers, there’s the added attraction of seeing marine life in the water.

Spinner dolphins cavorting in the waters are a common sight, and you may see humpback whales in the winter.

Boat tours may also offer the opportunity to snorkel, and you can look for sea turtles in addition to colorful fish and coral .

While visiting the Na Pali Coast is definitely an adventure, a first visit to Kauai isn’t really complete without admiring this place of infinite beauty, provided the weather gods are on your side.

And once you visit, you’ll want to put the Na Pali Coast on your Kauai itinerary every time you visit the Garden Isle!

The Three Ways to Visit the Na Pali Coast of Kauai

There is no road access into the Na Pali Coast.

Currently, you can admire the beauty of the Na Pali Coast in one of three ways: from the air, from the water, or by hiking.

We describe each of the three ways in more detail below.

We’ve done a doors-on helicopter tour over the Na Pali Coast, and we’ve enjoyed a sunset catamaran cruise to the coast. We loved both these ways of experiencing the Na Pali Coast!

A rainbow over the Na Pali Coast of Kauai Hawaii

While we aren’t big hikers, we’ve also hiked a portion of the Kalalau Trail to get up close to the beauty of the coast.

Whichever option you choose for your Napali Coast adventure, note that visiting this beautiful part of the Garden Isle requires some planning!

1. Soar over the Na Pali Coast on a Helicopter Tour

Probably the most thrilling way of experiencing the spectacular beauty of the Na Pali Coast is to take a helicopter tour over Kauai.

Although most Kauai helicopter tours are whole-island tours, you can bet that the Na Pali Coast is high on the flight itinerary on most tours!

The Na Pali Coast of Kauai from a helicopter

If the weather permits, your helicopter pilot will fly low over the serrated ridges, so that you can ooh and aah at the magnificent scenery unfolding beneath you.

Viewing the cliffs, with their red and green hues, rising up by the side of the turquoise waters of the Pacific Ocean is a thrilling experience that will stay with you for a long time.

You may even fly low enough, or hover, to see the lush narrow valleys up close, waterfalls flowing down the slopes, and the pristine coves that line the coast.

While both doors-on and doors-off helicopter tours offer great views over the Na Pali Coast (most of the photos here were taken on a doors-on tour), there’s no doubt that having nothing between you and the beauty of the Na Pali Coast is quite an experience!

Morning or afternoon flight?

Should you pick a morning flight or an afternoon one? There isn’t a clear-cut answer!

Mornings usually tend to be less prone to weather disruptions. Clouds usually roll in and winds kick up as the day progresses, making later departures more likely to be canceled.

On the other hand, the Na Pali cliffs tend to be in the shadow in the morning. The sun shines on the cliffs in the afternoon, making it much nicer for photography.

If you are a serious photographer, though, check to see what the company you choose for your tour will allow in terms of gear.

Which time of day you choose is up to you, but we suggest booking the tour early in your itinerary so if it does get canceled, you have the option to reschedule before you have to leave!

Flights over the Na Pali Coast

This popular doors-off Kauai helicopter tour offers you morning or afternoon departure times. The total flight time is 45 to 50 minutes.

Prefer a doors-on experience? We loved our flight in the Eurocopter ECO Star . Morning and afternoon departures are offered.

The flight time is 50 minutes and the window glass is expansive, allowing for great views over the emerald spires of the Na Pali Coast.

Flying over the Na Pali Coast of Kauai, Hawaii

You can also fly over Kauai in a small aircraft. The slow-flying airplane with large windows is made especially for sightseeing.

This super popular airplane tour over Kauai lasts about an hour and you’ll fly over many Kauai landmarks, including, of course, the Na Pali Coast.

Several departures are offered through the day and the tour is narrated.

You can bring a camera on board, and, if you have a GoPro, they may even mount it on the exterior of the plane for an extra fee.

2. Admire the Na Pali Coast from a Boat!

Boat tours are by far the most popular way of experiencing the Na Pali Coast.

Not only can you admire the coast at leisure from the water, you may even be able to get close to one of the may Na Pali Coast waterfalls!

One of many Na Pali Coast waterfalls you may see on a boat tour of the coast in Kauai!

While boat tours are still pricey, they aren’t quite as pricey as helicopter tours.

And, one of the advantages of boat tours is that you may see marine life on your way to the Na Pali Coast and back!

Plus, you can choose to snorkel in the turquoise waters if you choose a snorkeling tour .

Boat Tour Departure Points

In the summer, some smaller vessel Na Pali Coast tours depart from Hanalei on the north shore. Year-round, boat tours depart from Port Allen on the south shore.

So no matter when you visit Kauai, weather permitting, you can take a boat tour to the famous coast.

The advantage of departing from Hanalei is that the Na Pali Coast is very close, so you do not spend a lot of time getting to and from the coast. 50-foot catamarans and smaller vessels depart from the north shore.

But the very largest catamarans only depart from Port Allen, so if that’s the type of boat you choose, plan on departing from the south shore.

What type of boat should you choose?

When it comes to Na Pali Coast boat tours, you have several choices. You can pick a large catamaran, a smaller boat, or a raft!

The largest (60-foot) catamarans depart from Port Allen. While you’ll be sharing the boat with more people, larger boats tend to be more stable.

The waters around the Na Pali Coast can get very choppy, so if you prefer a more stable Na Pali Coast boat experience, a larger vessel is definitely the way to go!

The larger boats are also likely to offer more amenities, such as restrooms.

But be aware that the larger boats may not be able to maneuver in and out of sea caves along the coast, or get you close enough to be sprayed by a Na Pali Coast waterfall.

A Na Pali Coast waterfall from the water in Kauai, HI

For a more intimate experience, you can choose a slightly smaller catamaran or other boat, and there are even some sailing options available.

Adventure lovers may want to consider a zodiac raft tour of the Na Pali Coast!

A zodiac raft is an inflatable rigid boat, agile enough to get in and out of the sea caves along the coast, and get under waterfalls, for a much more thrilling and immersive experience.

You’ll also be closer to marine life en route, such as spinner dolphins.

And some raft tours can actually land at Nu’alolo Kai, where you can explore the remains of an ancient Hawaiian fishing village.

On the flip side, however, your ride will be much choppier, so it’s not for visitors that are prone to motion sickness or those with back or neck problems.

Plus, given the small size of the raft (generally about 12-14 people or so), there are no bathrooms or other amenities on board.

And it’s so noisy, with the waves and the motor of the boat, that no commentary is usually possible.

Small boat cruises along the Na Pali Coast of Kauai, HI

Morning or afternoon boat tour?

The waters along the Na Pali Coast are usually calmer in the early morning, so if a stable ride is important, pick a morning tour.

But even on morning tours, by the time you head back, the trade winds will most likely have kicked up, creating some motion on the return journey.

The light is better for photos on afternoon tours, as the sunlight falls on the cliffs during the afternoon, bringing out their colors vividly.

The Most Popular Na Pali Coast Boat Tours

This deluxe Na Pali morning snorkel tour on the Lucky Lady is a half-day excursion that will take you past the spectacular scenery of the coast.

You’ll see the jagged cliffs, lush valleys, and waterfalls from the water, and perhaps spot dolphins and turtles, and whales in the distance in the winter.

There’s time for snorkeling and swimming, and lunch is included.

>> Check price and availability for this morning catamaran tour of the Na Pali Coast!

There’s also an afternoon Lucky Lady cruise option that includes sunset and dinner.

This Napali 1/2 Day Snorkel Adventure by Raft zips you in and out of caves and gets you under waterfalls on an exciting exploration of the Na Pali Coast.

En route, you will stop to swim and snorkel at one of the best coral reefs in Kauai. The 5.5-hour excursion includes a deli lunch and beverages.

You can pick a morning tour or an afternoon one. Prepare to get wet!

>> Check price and availability for this 1/2-day raft excursion to the Napali Coast!

This sunset sailing cruise is on a motorized catamaran, but when wind and weather allow, they hoist the sails for a lovely experience going up the coast.

The 5 hour excursion leaves from the Port Allen marina and includes dinner. You’ll see the cliffs in the best light of the day! And you may be treated to a spectacular Kauai sunset , as we were on our last trip!

Touring the Na Pali Coast of Kauai in Hawaii

Kayaking the Na Pali Coast

You can also paddle down the Na Pali Coast in the summer, at a time when the surf is small.

On a kayaking tour, you’ll start at Ha’ena, the eastern part of the coast, and end at Polihale Beach, on the western end.

It’s best to join a guided kayaking tour , and you need to be in top shape, a strong swimmer, and experienced kayaker, because it’s not an easy trip.

On a guided tour, you’ll likely have a lunch stop at Miloli’i Beach. Miloli’i, and Kalalau Valley, with a camping permit, are the only two places along the coast where you can legally land.

With an overnight permit, kayakers can camp at either Kalalau Valley, or Miloli’i Valley (only in the summer).

>> Check price and availability for a Na Pali Coast guided kayaking tour now!

3. Hiking the Na Pali Coast

A helicopter tour or a boat tour is a wonderful way to experience the Na Pali Coast, but if you want to get up close to its beauty — see rare plants at touching distance, or swim in the plunge pool of a Na Pali waterfall — then you have to hike!

The Kalalau Trail is the hiking trail that traverses the coast. It’s the only way to access the Na Pali Coast via land.

Kalalau Trail Kauai HI

The epic trail is 11 miles each way, and most hikers do it as a backpacking trip, spending one or more nights at a campsite.

An overnight camping permit is required to hike the trail beyond Hanakapiai Beach, and permits can be obtained here .

Starting at Ke’e Beach in Ha’ena State Park , the trail makes its way through five valleys along the Na Pali Coast and ends at Kalalau Beach, where it is blocked by vertical fluted cliffs.

Along the way, the trail drops down to the ocean at Hanakapiai Beach and then at Kalalau Beach.

The trail is much like the old foot trail that connected settlements here in earlier times!

En route, hikers are treated to glorious views, both over the ocean and along the coast.

Native and introduced Hawaiian plants are abundant along the trail, and many rare and endangered species grow along the cliffs.

Look for wild goats on the cliffs and whales spouting in the waters below in season!

Day Hikes at the Na Pali Coast

Hikers that want to experience the Kalalau Trail but not want to do the entire trail have several day hike options!

You can hike just about one half of a mile to a viewpoint for fabulous views over Ke’e Beach, or hike the moderate to strenuous trail two miles each way to Hanakapiai Beach and back.

A view of Ke'e Beach from the Kalalau Trail in Kauai, HI

And if you want to experience one of the valleys in the Na Pali Coast State Wilderness Park, you can hike four miles each way to Hanakapiai Falls, one of the best waterfalls in Kauai . You may even be able to slide into the plunge pool here for a dip.

This trail is strenuous and involves detouring inland from the Kalalau Trail at Hanakapiai Beach. There are several stream crossings!

The trailhead for the Kalalau Trail is within Ha’ena State Park , one of the most-visited state parks in Kauai . Entry and parking reservations are required for Ha’ena State Park, and can be obtained here .

Note that visitation to the park is regulated and spots get snapped up as soon as they become available. Stay on top of the reservations calendar to make sure you do not miss out!

Hanakapiai Falls Kauai HI is one of the waterfalls in Kauai to which you can hike!

We have a detailed guide to visiting Haena State Park that you must read if you plan to visit.

Taking a dip and watching the sun set at Ke’e Beach, one of the best swimming beaches in Kauai , is a great way to end your hiking adventure in the Na Pali Coast!

Tips for Visiting the Na Pali Coast

Get oriented: where is the na pali coast.

The Na Pali Coast is located in the northwest part of the island of Kauai in Hawaii (see map ).

Ha’ena State Park is the eastern end of the coast. From Ke’e Beach, inside Ha’ena State Park, you can actually see the cliffs of the Na Pali Coast.

The trailhead for the Kalalau Trail into the Na Pali Coast State Wilderness Park also starts by Ke’e Beach.

Polihale Beach in Polihale State Park is the western end of the coast, and you can view the cliffs of the Na Pali Coast from here as well.

You can also admire the Na Pali Coast from viewpoints in Koke’e State Park , which is located along the west coast of Kauai.

Na Pali Coast from Kokee State Park in Kauai, Hawaii

The Kalalau Lookout and the Pu’u O Kila Lookout offer fantastic views into the ridges and valleys of the coast on clear days.

Visit the Na Pali Coast in the summer for the best weather!

Kauai can get very rainy in the winter months, especially along the northern portions of the island.

Since the scenery is the primary reason to visit, and helicopter and boat tours can be expensive, you’ll want to schedule your trip for a time when the weather isn’t likely to dampen your adventure.

Not only is it usually cloudy and rainy in the winter, the ocean is also very rough along the north shore of Kauai, with huge waves.

In fact, boat, raft, and kayak trips to the Na Pali Coast only depart from the north shore during the summer months, because the ocean can get really rough along the north shore in the winter.

Hiking the Na Pali Coast is also more uncomfortable and more dangerous in adverse weather.

For your best shot at a bright sunny day for your Na Pali Coast adventure, plan to visit in the summer, between late May and early September.

The Na Pali Coast of Kauai in Hawaii

Book your Na Pali Coast boat or helicopter tour early in your trip

Weather on Kauai can turn at any time, and both helicopter flights and boat tours are subject to cancelation if weather is unfavorable.

Since admiring the Na Pali Coast is likely high on your wish-list for Kauai, book your boat or aerial tour for as early in your stay as you can.

If your tour does get canceled for some reason, this will give you the opportunity to reschedule or book another tour for a later day in your stay.

Book a morning tour for clearer skies and calmer waters

Mornings on Kauai’s Na Pali Coast tend to be better weather-wise. The ocean is generally calmer, if you are planning a boat tour, and the skies clearer if you are planning an aerial tour.

In the afternoons, clouds usually roll in, and by late morning, swells in the ocean kick up.

Afternoon helicopter or boat tours are usually more apt to be canceled on account of weather than morning tours.

Although our captain was able to get our boat very close to one of the Na Pali Coast waterfalls despite choppy waters, I imagine it’s much easier in the mornings when the waters are calmer.

Vegetation along the Kalalau Trail in Kauai

Book an afternoon tour for better light for photography

If you are very particular about the light for your photos, pick a bright sunny afternoon! When the sun’s rays fall on the cliffs, as they do in the afternoons, the colors of the cliffs look sensational.

In the mornings, the sun is behind the cliffs, so they are in the shadows for the most part.

Bring a rain jacket on your Na Pali Coast boat tour or hike!

On a boat tour of the Na Pali Coast, if the swells kick up, you will likely be sprayed as you travel back and forth.

Bring a light rain jacket with a hood to stay protected, especially if you choose a smaller boat or a raft!

A rain jacket is also useful when you are hiking the Kalalau Trail, as showers (and misty weather) are possible at any time.

  • The historic Kalalau Trail offers an 11-mile journey with lush landscapes and camping options.

Napali Coast unfolds as a 16-mile (26 km) stretch of awe-inspiring beauty on the island of Kauai, extending from the remote Polihale Beach in the west to Kee Beach on the north shore. This pristine coastline is a visual masterpiece, boasting beautiful beaches, towering sea cliffs, and lush valleys with waterfalls cascading into the Pacific. Once home to Hawaiians, it now draws visitors globally, leading local authorities to manage permits, camping access, and visitor restrictions to preserve its natural wonders.

Activities at Napali Coast

Hanakapiai Falls: Embark on a 2-mile hike from Hanakapi’ai Beach to witness the 300 feet high Hanakapiai Falls. The short trek unveils the enchanting beauty of this natural wonder.

Hike to Kalalau Valley: A physically demanding but rewarding adventure awaits those willing to traverse the Kalalau Trail. Spanning 11 miles and crossing five valleys, it reveals lush landscapes, towering cliffs, and the historic Kalalau Beach. A camping permit is essential for those venturing beyond Hanakoa Valley.

Napali Coast Hiking

The historic Kalalau Trail, originally built in the 1800s,spans 11 miles and crosses five valleys. While the initial stretch from Ha’ena State Park to Hanakapi’ai Beach is suitable for a day hike, completing the full trail requires a camping permit and is recommended for experienced hikers. The journey is a testament to the island's diverse landscapes and rich history.

Camping on the Napali Coast

Campers can find respite at the Hanakoa campsite, six miles from the trailhead, and at Kalalau for a maximum of five nights. Permits are required, and reservations are advisable due to temporary closures caused by flooding.

Kayaking Adventures

For a unique perspective, embark on a one-day kayaking tour from Ha’ena to Polihale Beach. Paddling for 5-6 hours amidst sea caves and waterfalls provides an intimate encounter with the coast's natural wonders.

Napali Coast Tours

Guided tours streamline planning, ensure safety, and offer a variety of experiences at competitive prices. Options range from cruise and sailing tours, shore excursions, and helicopter tours to water sports, outdoor activities, and luxury tours.

Best Time to Visit

Plan kayaking adventures in the calm seas of summer and enjoy hiking between May and October for optimal conditions.

Accessing Napali Coast

Napali Coast State Park begins at Haena State Park, a 41-mile drive from Lihue Airport. Public transport to Hanalei followed by a cab to Kalalau trailhead is an option, but it's recommended for those without camping gear.

Top tips for hiring a car at moscow vnukovo airport.

  • Whether you’re visiting Moscow for a week or a month, getting a car rental at Moscow Vnukovo Airport (VKO) is the best way to explore the Russian capital. You’ll traverse various parts of the city that aren’t fully accessible by public transport. Self-driving lets you choose the shortest route to your destination and avoid traffic. Renting a car will save you money compared to using a taxi when you look at the overall costs to multiple destinations.
  • Collecting your rental car at Moscow Vnukovo Airport isn’t that complicated. You’ll find several local and international car rental suppliers at the airport with an on-site counter. Car rental desks at VKO are on the ground level in the Arrivals section, Terminal A. Once you get to the airport, head straight to your preferred company’s rental desk. You can also visit the rental desks after booking online. Make sure you carry all the requested documents. After processing, a staff member from the rental company will guide you to the pick-up point outside the terminal. Take your time to inspect the car for any dents or damages. Check the fuel level and make sure your maps are working and in your preferred language since most road signs in Moscow are in Russian.
  • The other benefit of getting a car rental at Moscow Vnukovo Airport is that you’ll have a smooth return process. Most rental companies will ask you to return the rental car to the exact location you collected it, or the drop-off point stated in your rental contract. What you should pay attention to is the return period. Make sure you return the car on time to avoid the late return penalty fee. You can inform the company early if you’re facing challenges and can’t return the rental car on time. After dropping off the vehicle, conduct a final inspection to check for damages before heading to your rental counter for clearance.
  • Moscow Vnukovo Airport usually gets busy between March to July when most tourists visit for the summer holidays. During this period, car rental bookings are generally high. You can experience long waits at the car rental counter. The airport also gets busy during weekends, special events, holidays, and major conferences in Moscow. We advise you to book in advance for availability and to save money since rates are comparatively pricey during the peak travel season.
  • Book your car hire at Moscow Vnukovo airport at least 4 weeks before your trip in order to get a below-average price

Moscow Metro

The Moscow Metro Tour is included in most guided tours’ itineraries. Opened in 1935, under Stalin’s regime, the metro was not only meant to solve transport problems, but also was hailed as “a people’s palace”. Every station you will see during your Moscow metro tour looks like a palace room. There are bright paintings, mosaics, stained glass, bronze statues… Our Moscow metro tour includes the most impressive stations best architects and designers worked at - Ploshchad Revolutsii, Mayakovskaya, Komsomolskaya, Kievskaya, Novoslobodskaya and some others.

What is the kremlin in russia?

The guide will not only help you navigate the metro, but will also provide you with fascinating background tales for the images you see and a history of each station.

And there some stories to be told during the Moscow metro tour! The deepest station - Park Pobedy - is 84 metres under the ground with the world longest escalator of 140 meters. Parts of the so-called Metro-2, a secret strategic system of underground tunnels, was used for its construction.

During the Second World War the metro itself became a strategic asset: it was turned into the city's biggest bomb-shelter and one of the stations even became a library. 217 children were born here in 1941-1942! The metro is the most effective means of transport in the capital.

There are almost 200 stations 196 at the moment and trains run every 90 seconds! The guide of your Moscow metro tour can explain to you how to buy tickets and find your way if you plan to get around by yourself.
