Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Mumbai on Friday and flag off two Vande Bharat trains from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT). This is his second visit to Mumbai in less than a month and comes before the upcoming Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) polls.

PM Modi will first flag off the Mumbai-Solapur Vande Bharat Express from CSMT in the afternoon. Afterwards, the second semi-high-speed train linking Mumbai to Sainagar Shirdi - a temple town in Ahmednagar - will be flagged off from the same terminus.

With the two trains becoming operational, the number of Vande Bharat Express trains running from Mumbai will increase to three and the count will go up to 10 for the country. The first Vande Bharat train in Maharashtra connected Mumbai with Gujarat's Gandhinagar.

Officials told PTI that Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, his deputy Devendra Fadnavis, Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari and Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw will be present at the function held at CSMT.

The prime minister will also inaugurate two vehicular underpasses at Kurar and Malad and the Vakola-Kurla and MTNL-LBS (Lal Bahadur Shastri) elevated corridor arms on Santacruz-Chembur Link Road. These arms connect the Western Express Highway (WEH) to the Eastern Express Highway (EEH).

The Kurar underpass will help ease traffic on WEH and connect the Malad and Kurar sides of the busy highway. Pedestrians will be able to cross the road with ease and vehicles will move without having to get into the heavy traffic on WEH.

PM Modi will also inaugurate a new campus of Aljamea-tus-Saifiyah (The Saifee Academy) at Marol in suburban Andheri. The institute is focused on protecting the learning traditions and literary culture of the Dawoodi Bohra community.

PM Modi gifts projects worth Rs 38,000 cr to Mumbai; rides newly-launched metro | WATCH

Pm modi rode metro train after inaugurating mumbai metro rail lines 2a and 7 built at a cost of around rs 12,600 crore. he was seen chatting with metro staff and other co-passengers during his ride on a new track comprising a 35km-long elevated corridor stretching from andheri to dahisar..

35 km-long Metro project

The PM inaugurated Mumbai Metro Rail Lines 2A and 7 built at a cost of around Rs 12,600 crore. They comprise a 35km-long elevated corridor stretching from Andheri to Dahisar in suburban Mumbai. He rode the newly launched metro. PM Modi also inaugurated 20 'Aapla Davakhana' (health clinics) named after Shiv Sena founder Bal Thackeray.

Big push to Maharashtra's infrastructure

The projects gave a big push to infrastructure, urban travel and healthcare ahead of civic polls, where the BJP and the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena will seek to showcase these ventures to take on the political rivals.

This was Modi's first visit to Mumbai after Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde took office in June-end las year after dislodging the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government. At the inauguration and foundation stone laying ceremony of development projects at Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC), both Shinde and deputy chief minister Devendra Fadnavis targeted the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena faction and the MVA government.

Civic elections in Mumbai and some other important cities, including Pune, Thane and Nagpur, are likely to be held later this year.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Shinde's faction of the Shiv Sena are looking to wrest control of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) from the Thackeray-headed camp.

At a function held at the MMRDA ground in BKC, Modi inaugurated and laid foundation stones of a string of projects worth more than Rs 38,000 crore aimed at developing infrastructure, easing urban travel, and strengthening healthcare in the financial capital.

He laid foundation stones for seven sewage treatment plants, a road concretisation project and redevelopment of the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus.

Fadnavis targets MVA government

Earlier in his speech, deputy chief minister Fadnavis said in the 2019 Assembly polls, Modi had urged people to vote for a 'double engine sarkar' (BJP in power in state and the Centre) in Maharashtra. "But due to betrayal of some people, for two-and-a-half years (the tenure of MVA regime) we did not have a pro-people government in the state. But because of true followers of Balasaheb Thackeray, our government is back now," the BJP leader said, apparently referring to Shinde, who revolted against the Shiv Sena leadership in June 2022, leading to collapse of the Uddhav Thackeray-led government.  Modi is the only PM who inaugurated projects whose ground breaking ceremony he had performed, Fadnavis said, adding this reflects beginning of a new culture.

Those who ruled the Mumbai civic body for several years never worked to provide clean water to local residents, he said, targeting the Thackeray-led Sena faction.

Fadnavis also thanked the Centre for providing railway land for re-development of Dharavi, a sprawling slum colony in Mumbai.

Chief Minister Shinde said development took a backseat during the tenure of the MVA administration (November 2019-June 2022).

''We were able to free the people of Mumbai from suffocation under the MVA rule because of Modiji's leadership,'' said the CM. Shinde went on to heap praise on the PM.

"There is something special about Modi's personality. I get a holy (pavitra) feeling," said the chief minister and added the Indian PM was a widely discussed political figure at the World Economic Forum (WEF) annual meeting in Davos. Shinde was in Davos earlier this week.

The CM said his government will transform Mumbai in the next three years and give a new identity to India's financial capital and also Maharashtra. “Lets pledge to create a new Maharashtra under Modi's leadership,” he said.

The 18.6 km-long Mumbai Metro Rail line 2A connects suburban Dahisar (East) with the 16.5 km-long DN Nagar (yellow line) while the metro line 7 joints Andheri (East) with Dahisar (East). The foundation stones of these lines were laid by PM Modi in 2015.

PM lauches mobile app The prime minister also launched Mumbai 1 mobile app and National Common Mobility Card (NCMC).

The app, which can be shown at the entry gates of metro stations, will facilitate ease of travel. It supports digital payment to buy tickets through UPI.

The mobility card will initially be used in metro corridors and can be later extended to other modes of mass public transit, including suburban trains and buses, an official release said.

Commuters will not need to carry multiple cards or cash, it said, adding the NCMC will enable quick, contact-less digital transactions, easing the process with a seamless experience.

The seven sewage treatment plants will be built at a cost of around Rs 17,200 crore and come up at suburban Malad, Bhandup, Versova, Ghatkopar, Bandra, Dharavi and Worli. They will have a combined capacity of around 2,460 MLD, said the release.

In an effort to strengthen healthcare infrastructure in Mumbai, the prime minister inaugurated 20 Hinduhridaysamrat Balasaheb Thackeray Aapla Dawakhana' clinics. The initiative provides essential medical services like health check-ups, medicines, investigations and diagnostics, free to people.

The PM laid the foundation stone for three new hospitals- a 360-bed multi-speciality municipal hospital in Bhandup, a 306-bed facility in Goregaon (West), and a 152-bed maternity home in Oshiwara.

This will benefit lakhs of residents of the city and deliver top-class medical facilities to them, the release added.

The PM launched a road concretisation project worth Rs 6,100 crore for around 400 km of roads in the megapolis.

He also laid the foundation stone for the redevelopment of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus in south Mumbai.

This project is aimed at decongesting the southern heritage node of the terminus, augmentation of facilities, better multi-modal integration and conserving and restoring the world-famous iconic structure to its past glory, the release said. The redevelopment will cost more than Rs 1,800 crore.

The prime minister also started the transfer of approved loans of more than one lakh beneficiaries under the PM SVANidhi Yojana. (With PTI input)

PM Modi to visit Mumbai on January 19, 2023

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Mumbai on January 19 to inaugurate the Navi Mumbai Metro’s 5.96-km stretch between Central Park and Belapur stations, as per the sources. On the same day, the 35-km stretch of Mumbai Metro’s 2A and 7 lines is also likely to be commissioned in PM Modi’s presence.

However, between 15 January and 19, Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis are scheduled to visit Davos to attend the World Economic Forum. There are talks, they might come back early for the Metro inauguration event or change their plan to visit Davos, which is expected to bring investment opportunities for Maharashtra.

Then Maharashtra chief minister Uddhav Thackeray flagged off the first phase of the 2A and 7 lines in April 2022, the 20-km stretch from Dhanukarwadi (Kamran Nagar) to Aarey Colony in the western suburbs of Mumbai.

According to officials of Maha Mumbai Metro Operations Corporation Ltd (MMMOCL), once the entire stretch of these two lines with 30 stations and a 35-km elevated corridor becomes operational, it can carry nearly 3 lakh passengers per day.  MMMOCL takes care of the metro rail’s operation and maintenance.

PM Narendra Modi's Maharashtra Visit Postponed, Uncertainty Looms Over Inauguration Of Coastal Road & Other Projects

Mumbai: The much anticipated visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Mumbai, Satara and Pune, scheduled for February 19, has been abruptly postponed. The tour, which was set to coincide with the birth anniversary of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, also included the prestigious Shiv Samman award for the Prime Minister.

The initially planned stops included the PM’s visit to the historic Shivneri Fort in Pune, followed by a trip to Aandhali dam in Satara. Another significant event planned during the visit was the jalpuja ceremony, symbolising the discharge of water from the Jihe Katapur Yojana, dedicated to the PM’s Guru Laxmanrao Inamdar. Key political figures such as MP Udayanraje Bhosale and Madha MP Ranjitsinh Naik Nimbalkar were to accompany him on the tour.

Projects Awaiting Inauguration:

In Mumbai, the postponement has left the BMC and MMRDA authorities scrambling to adjust plans. Among the flagship projects awaiting inauguration was the first phase of the coastal road, the groundbreaking ceremony for the twin tunnels of the Goregaon-Mulund Link Road (GMLR), the integrated trial runs for phase 1 of the Metro-3 corridor, and a women’s financial assistance scheme. Now the fate of these projects are in a limbo.

Plans for the Thane-Borivali twin tunnels, intended to alleviate congestion on Ghodbunder Road, also remain uncertain. Similarly, finalising the opening hours of the coastal road’s Worli-Marine Drive arm is also mired in uncertainty despite civic chief IS Chahal’s preparations and announcements.

Uncertainty Looms:

While BJP leaders remain hopeful for a rescheduled visit by the end of February, the lack of confirmation from official channels leaves the public awaiting further updates. With significant projects and ceremonies hanging in the balance, stakeholders and the public alike remain uncertain about the future timeline for these crucial initiatives.

Modi’s Power Keeps Growing, and India Looks Sure to Give Him More

Few doubt the popular prime minister will win a third term in voting that starts Friday. His strong hand is just what many Indians seem to want.

  • Share full article

Several dozen people standing close together, with many wearing saffron-colored scarves or hats. Some carry cardboard cutouts of Narendra Modi.

By Mujib Mashal

Mujib Mashal followed Narendra Modi on the campaign trail in the important Indian states of Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra while reporting this article.

As he campaigns across India for an election that began on Friday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi speaks of his insatiable ambitions in terms of dinner-table appetite.

Roofs over heads, water connections, cooking gas cylinders — Mr. Modi reads down the menu of what he calls the abundant “development” he has provided to India’s poor. But he’s not stopping there. “What Modi has done so far is just the appetizer,” he said at one stop, referring to himself in the third person, as he often does. “The main course is yet to come.”

To Mr. Modi’s legions of supporters, a third term would bring more of what they find so appealing in him. He is that rare breed of strongman who keeps an ear to the ground. He is a magnetic figure and a powerful orator. He has built an image as a tireless, incorruptible worker for a country on the rise.

But to his critics, Mr. Modi’s talk of a “main course” is an alarm bell for the future of the world’s largest democracy.

Mr. Modi, 73, enters the election a heavy favorite, his party’s grip over India’s more populous northern and central heartlands firmer than ever, the opposition in the same decisive geography even more diminished. Yet even with his place as India’s unrivaled leader seemingly secured, he has carried out a crackdown on dissent that has only intensified.

In the lead-up to the voting, which will run for six weeks before results are announced on June 4, agencies under Mr. Modi’s control have frozen the bank accounts of the largest opposition party. The leaders of two opposition-run states have been thrown in jail, in cases they call politically motivated. (The capital region, New Delhi, is currently governed by a chief minister who sends his directives from behind bars.)

All of this, Mr. Modi’s critics say, shows the penchant for full control that has become evident over his decade as prime minister. Mr. Modi, they contend, will not stop until he has turned India’s democracy into one-party rule. Power is being aggressively consolidated “around the cult of the leader’s personality,” said Yamini Aiyar, a policy analyst in New Delhi.

“The deep centralization of power has significantly undermined institutional checks and balances baked into India’s democratic structure,” Ms. Aiyar said.

Many Indians seem willing to accept this. Mr. Modi has remained deeply popular even as he has become more autocratic. He has paid little price — and even found support — for his effort to remake India into what analysts have called an illiberal democracy.

He exploits contradictions. The right to vote is held as sacred in a country whose democracy has offered protection in a turbulent region. But polling also indicates that large numbers of Indians are willing to cede civil liberties to support a powerful ruler they see as getting things done.

Another seeming incongruity: People who speak of their own economic strife also often express faith in Mr. Modi’s running of the country’s affairs, a testament to the forceful narratives he weaves.

Indians have more tangible reasons to back him, too. Mr. Modi relentlessly tends his broad support base through generous offerings across society: favorable deals for the business elite in a growing economy, robust welfare programs for India’s impoverished majority, and a strong dose of Hindu nationalism for those in between.

A campaign stop this month in his party’s stronghold of Uttar Pradesh illustrated this winning formula.

Mr. Modi stood in the back of a saffron-colored truck as it moved slowly down a shopping street lined with global brands and jewelry shops, a scene that spoke to the new wealth that has lifted millions of Indians into the middle class.

Overhead, billboards with pictures of Mr. Modi — his face is everywhere in India — told of achievements like the installation of more than 100 million toilets for the poor and India’s rising stature.

At the end of the “roadshow,” at the junction where Mr. Modi’s vehicle turned right and headed back to Delhi, was a stage set up with loudspeakers. As Hindu nationalist songs blared, actors dressed up as the deities Ram and Sita posed for selfies with the crowd.

Mr. Modi’s inauguration in January of a huge temple dedicated to Ram, on the disputed site of a mosque razed three decades ago by a Hindu mob, has been a major election-year offering to his Hindu base.

“We are Hindu, we are Hindu, we will only speak of Ram,” went one song’s chant. “Those who brought Ram, we will bring them to power.”

Mr. Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party, or B.J.P., started in 1980 as an urban middle-class organization centered around a Hindu majoritarian core. Under Mr. Modi, it has recast itself as the party of the poor and of the village in northern India, analysts say.

Some in India believe that poorer people have merely fallen under Mr. Modi’s spell. Nalin Mehta, the author of the book “The New B.J.P.,” called that fundamentally wrong.

“The fact that the B.J.P. continues to win these victories reflects how successful it has been in getting newer constituents of voters who never voted B.J.P. before, and who may not even be followers of Hindu nationalism,” he said.

Mr. Mehta attributes much of that success to the party’s expansion and branding of welfare programs and its efforts to promote itself as pan-Hindu, actively reaching out to India’s marginalized castes.

By prioritizing direct digital welfare payments, the B.J.P. has cut out the middleman and made sure the handouts are seen as coming straight from Mr. Modi.

Technology also allows the party to follow up, with B.J.P. workers — armed with data — knocking on the door of anyone who received a water tap, a gas cylinder or a government grant to build a home.

Data creates layers of feedback that help the party pick its candidates, jettisoning large numbers of incumbents before each election. “This B.J.P. is very ruthless on winnability,” Mr. Mehta said.

Bringing it all together are Mr. Modi’s outsize appeal and his political and technological acumen.

He has put his personal story at the center of his narrative of an ascendant India, the main pillar of his campaign. If a lower-caste son of a chai seller can become one of the most powerful men in the world, he says, other ordinary Indians can dream, too.

While inequality has grown and 800 million Indians are at the mercy of monthly rations, many focus instead on their faith that Mr. Modi is not a thief. He casts himself as a bachelor with no descendants who works only for the Indian people, unlike what he calls the corrupt political dynasts in the opposition.

“Modi wasn’t born in some royal family to become prime minister,” he told a crowd of tens of thousands in the state of Maharashtra. “It’s you who have brought him this far.”

The political opposition has been severely weakened by infighting, leadership crises and its struggle to offer an ideological alternative to the B.J.P.

But it also faces a playing field that Mr. Modi has tilted in his own favor.

He has cowed the broadcast media. Independent journalists who do question his policies have been jailed or subjected to legal harassment. India leads the world in internet shutdowns, obscuring unrest that looks bad for the government. And officials under Mr. Modi have forced social media platforms to scrape critical content.

Investigating agencies have been set loose on Mr. Modi’s political opponents — more than 90 percent of cases involving politicians over the past decade have involved the opposition. Many languish in jail or the court system. Those who switch allegiance to the B.J.P. find that their cases vanish.

On the campaign trail in the state of West Bengal, an opposition candidate, Mahua Moitra, spoke of saving democracy from the authoritarianism she said had led to her own expulsion from Parliament — in a messy case involving a former romantic partner, a Rottweiler named Henry and accusations of graft.

Autocracy and Mr. Modi’s perceived coziness with billionaires have been the opposition’s two main attack lines. While campaigning, Ms. Moitra told a group of women that they were still waiting for government money to build homes because Mr. Modi “is busy building palaces for his friends.”

Analysts doubt that either issue will resonate widely. Many Indians, particularly in his stronghold in the north, which has a decisive say in who rules from New Delhi, like exactly what they are getting from Mr. Modi.

“He is the prime minister, and if he is not strong enough, then what good would it be?” Anjali Vishwakarma, 37, an interior designer, said as she walked along the Ganges one recent day with her family in Mr. Modi’s constituency of Varanasi.

Suhasini Raj contributed reporting from Varanasi, Sameer Yasir from Krishnanagar and Hari Kumar from Ghaziabad in India.

Tesla remains committed to India expansion despite Musk's postponed visit

Tesla remains committed to India expansion despite Musk's postponed visit

Tesla remains steadfast in its expansion plans in India despite Elon Musk 's recent decision to postpone his meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi . Industry analysts suggest that the ongoing elections in India are likely the reason behind Musk's rescheduling. "Unfortunately, very heavy Tesla obligations require that the visit to India be delayed, but I do very much look forward to visiting later this year," Musk stated on April 20.

India manufacturing plans were delayed recently

At his anticipated visit, Musk was expected to reveal his plans regarding establishing a manufacturing facility in India. As part of a new EV policy, the Modi government recently reduced import taxes on specific electric vehicles for companies pledging a minimum of $500 million investment in manufacturing infrastructure within three years. However, just two days before his visit to India, Musk withdrew his plans.

Tesla may eventually establish a base in India

Despite Musk's unexpected decision, analysts agree that Tesla will eventually establish a base in India, which overtook Japan as the world's third-largest automobile market in 2022. Tesla's entry into India's electric vehicle market could heighten competition, prompting local carmakers like Tata Motors to offer discounts due to falling battery prices and productivity-linked incentives (PLIs) offered by the government.

Maharashtra Congress chief Nana Patole alleged the state government comprising the Eknath Shinde faction of Shiv Sena and the BJP is wasting public money for promoting Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Mumbai on Thursday.

Patole wondered whether issues like suicide by farmers, unemployment, inflation etc. would find a mention in the prime minister's address. "PM Modi had performed the 'jalpoojan' ceremony for Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj's memorial in the Arabian sea six years ago. But what happened after that? Modi should speak about the memorial tomorrow and also on unemployment, price rise and suicide by farmers. 3,000 farmers committed suicide last year," Patole told reporters.

"The state government is wasting the public money in promoting the visit of the prime minister," he alleged.

Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray had alleged tenders worth more than Rs 6,000 crore were floated at a higher price for the concretisation of 400 km of roads in Mumbai for the benefit of contractors. They were used to this practice for the last many years," Fadnavis told reporters when asked about Aaditya Thackeray's remarks.

Both police stations, which come under the jurisdiction of the MBVV, did not act on the complaints quickly, he had alleged earlier. (PTI)

With the politics of aggressive Hindutva nationalism under a maverick leadership and smartly packaged with social engineering, the BJP has emerged as a powerful political force against which the Opposition lacks strategic and ideological alternatives.

However, in Maharashtra, the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena is trying to advance a parallel version of Hindutva politics, distinct from the BJP’s model. It appears that the Sena is trying to rejuvenate Hindutva by adopting progressive religious-cultural ideas that endorse reformist-socialist values and challenge the hegemony of social elites.

A man from Maharashtra's Thane city was allegedly duped of Rs 5 lakh by online fraudsters when he was checking a fault in his TV channel service, police said on Tuesday.

The incident took place on January 14 when the man called up his TV channel service provider as its details were not displayed on his television screen, an official from Chitalsar police station said quoting the victim's complaint.

While he was speaking on the phone, he got a call from another number where the caller asked him to download the AnyDesk app. After the man downloaded the app, he found that an amount of Rs 5 lakh was debited from his bank account through net banking even when he had not initiated the transaction, the official said.

The man subsequently complained to the police who registered a case against unidentified persons under Indian Penal Code Section 420 (cheating) and provisions of the Information Technology Act, he said. Efforts were on to trace the culprits, the police added. (PTI)

One new case of coronavirus has been detected in Maharashtra's Thane district, taking its infection count to 7,47,415, a health official said on Tuesday. The new case was reported on Monday, he said.

There are currently nine active Covid-19 cases in the district, which comes under the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, he said. The death toll in the district remained unchanged at 11,971. The recovery count stood at 7,36,208, he added. (PTI)

Shiv Sena (UBT) leader and former minister Aaditya Thackeray on Monday wrote a letter to Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) chief Iqbal Singh Chahal, raising questions over the civic body’s mega 397-km Cement Concrete (CC) road contracts worth Rs 6,000 crore. Read more

A leader from the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party said the PM's visit on Thursday will boost their morale and help in setting up a "favourable pitch" for the BJP and the Shinde-led Balasahebanchi Shiv Sena for the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections, which are overdue.

The Sena faction led by Shinde and the BJP are eyeing control of the cash-rich BMC, which was earlier under the Shiv Sena rule. The civic body is now governed by an administrator since its term ended in March last year.

Large size cut outs of the PM, Shinde and other leaders have been put at an intersection near Shiv Sena (UBT) head Uddhav Thackeray's home in suburban Bandra. (PTI)

The Bombay High Court sought to know from the state government and the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on the current policy about hawkers, who function outside hawking zones hampering pedestrian movement on street. The bench sought to know from the authorities why unlicensed hawkers are allowed to function, who obstruct sidewalks. It said that basic facilities be provided to disabled pedestrians.

The Bombay High Court on Monday observed that a mechanism needs to be evolved for the regulation of the high population of stray dogs on the streets regarding their feeding, grooming, neutering and vaccination. The court sought assistance from a city-based NGO ‘The Welfare of Stray Dogs.’ A division bench of Justice G S Patel and Justice S G Dige was hearing a plea filed by six residents of a society in Navi Mumbai seeking to direct the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) to identify and demarcate feeding stations in public places for stray dogs.

On the weather front, the city’s AQI again breached the 300-mark and dropped to ‘very poor’ category on Monday. According to the readings observed in the SAFAR, the overall AQI of Mumbai was 306 on Monday. The city also recorded worse AQI than Delhi for the second day in a row. Delhi’s AQI was recorded at 242, which is categorised as ‘poor’. Several pockets of the city continued to record worse AQI.

In view of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Mumbai Thursday, the city police commissionerate has issued an order banning the use of drone, paragliders , and remote control microlight aircraft flying activities in Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC), Andheri, and Jogeshwari areas on the day for 24 hours. PM Modi will be in the city for the inauguration of the Navi Mumbai Metro’s 5.96-km stretch between Central Park and Belapur stations.

As Mumbai’s air quality index again deteriorates to ‘very poor’, doctors anticipate further rise in the footfall of patients with respiratory distress and asthma. It is advised to mask up while stepping out. On Tuesday, as per SAFAR, the air pollutant—PM10 (µgm-3) surged to 200 in the category of ‘moderate’ AQI. While the PM2.5 (µgm-3) increased to 134, worse than Delhi which was 126. For over a month, the financial capital—Mumbai has been under the cast of poor air quality which is impacting the health of citizens.

I n a bid to declutter Malad , the BMC has chalked out a holistic decongestion plan to ensure improved vehicular movement. Malad, located in P North ward in the western suburbs, is the biggest ward in terms of area and population and records heavy vehicular traffic. Over the last few years, several infrastructure projects have also been initiated in Malad, affecting traffic movement. Moreover, street vendors and residential properties have taken over a major chunk of the roads, affecting road widening works.

Musk delays India visit and meeting with Modi as Tesla, SpaceX eye huge market

Elon Musk waves

Elon Musk postponed a visit to India which would have included a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, saying he must tend to pressing issues at Tesla Inc.

“Unfortunately, very heavy Tesla obligations require that the visit to India be delayed, but I do very much look forward to visiting later this year,” the billionaire said in a post on X . He had been scheduled to visit for two days — April 21 and 22 — to  announce plans  to enter the Indian market.

The decision to postpone comes after a hectic week at Tesla. Early Sunday, Musk announced in a memo to the company’s more than 140,000 employees that he was reducing headcount by more than 10% globally. Two top executives also departed.

On Wednesday, the company said it will ask shareholders to vote again on a $56 billion compensation package for Musk that was voided by a Delaware court in January. And on Friday, Tesla recalled almost 3,900 Cybertruck pickups and cut the price of most of its cars in the US by $2,000 as sales slow and inventories rise.

The company will also report first-quarter earnings on April 23, having already reported vehicle deliveries that  missed estimates  by a wide margin. The stock has fallen more than 40% this year, dropping the automaker’s market value to less than $470 billion.

Musk’s planned India visit was critical in terms of timing for both him and Modi. India has kicked off voting for its national elections where Modi is seeking a third term, citing the nation’s economic rise. Investments from billionaires like Musk would burnish his appeal among voters.

Musk is seeking permission for SpaceX’s Starlink to operate in what will be by far its biggest market. Starlink has already received assurances from India’s government that it will be able to start operating in the country as soon as the third quarter of this year, Bloomberg reported  earlier .

Tesla has also been trying to break into India for years, but high import taxes were a deterrent — something Musk has pointed out repeatedly. India last month lowered import taxes on EVs from foreign carmakers that pledge to invest at least 41.5 billion rupees ($497 million) and start EV production from a local factory within three years.

A sizable investment by Tesla would enable Musk to tap into India’s burgeoning electric-vehicle market and counter slowing demand for EVs elsewhere. Tesla watchers, however, would want to see action on the ground after witnessing delays in previously announced projects such as constructing a massive plant in Mexico.

narendra modi mumbai visit plan

During a public rally in Morena, Madhya Pradesh, on April 25, Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched a scathing attack on the Congress party. His criticism came in response to the recent decision by the Karnataka government to include Muslims in the list of communities eligible for reservation in employment and educational institutions (OBCs). Prime Minister Modi lambasted the Congress, accusing them of playing divisive politics and pandering to vote banks rather than focusing on the overall development of the nation. Watch video.
