Nissan Safari Rally Z Tribute brings rallying heritage to life at 2023 SEMA show

Safari Rally Z Tribute x Datsun 240Z Replica

October 30, 2023

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Nissan pays homage to its motorsports heritage with the Safari Rally Z Tribute 1 built by Tommy Pike Customs and a replica Datsun 240Z Safari rally car at this year's SEMA show.

Celebrating a multi-decade legacy of rallying successes, the showcase vehicles will appear alongside other Nissan concepts and production models in the  Las Vegas Convention Center West Hall, booth #52141 , at the 2023 SEMA show, Oct. 31-Nov. 3.

With the seventh-generation Nissan Z winning fans on both road and race track , the Safari Rally Z Tribute imagines how the sports car could translate that exhilaration to adventures beyond the pavement. The styling of the car also pays homage to the Datsun 240Z rally car that won the 1971 East African Safari Rally .

Leaning into the trend for rugged, go-anywhere "safari" builds, Tommy Pike and his South Carolina-based team raised and toughened the car's suspension, adding commensurate lighting, durability and performance enhancements to ready the asphalt-oriented Z for the dusty world of rallying.

Custom KW Safari suspension and NISMO suspension parts raise the coupe's ride height by 2 inches, helping accommodate 17 x 7.5-inch prototype NISMO Safari wheels shod in dirt-ready Yokohama GEOLANDAR M/T G003 tires.

Protecting vital powertrain and chassis components are a new front bumper guard and skid plate, while an assortment of NISMO Off Road LED lights deliver additional illumination for dusty conditions or night racing. Key interior enhancements include a custom roll bar with 4-point harnesses and custom-trimmed Recaro Pole Position seats.

For further powertrain enhancements, the Safari Rally Z Tribute features an AMS-tuned, 400+ horsepower, VR30DDTT engine combined with a NISMO Track cat-back exhaust system, cold air intake, carbon fiber engine cover, coolant expansion tank, heat exchanger, and street twin-disc clutch and flywheel. Find full details on the vehicle's specifications in the complete build sheet .

Rally victories

No recounting of Nissan racing heritage is complete without noting the success of driver Edgar Herrmann and navigator Hans Schüller, who placed first over the 3,800-mile 1971 East African Safari Rally in the #11 Datsun 240Z race car . It's a milestone for the company that the new, twin-turbo Safari Z Tribute is intended to celebrate.

Notably, the 240Z victory marked the second consecutive win for a Datsun racer, with a Datsun Bluebird 1600SSS scoring the overall win in the grueling off-road contest's 18th year, 1970.

Bringing this racing heritage to life for SEMA attendees, Nissan is showcasing a vintage replica of the rally-winning 240Z, offering a side-by-side look at the through-line of the company's racing and sports car legacies.

On loan from collector Randy Jaffe, the car was restored in 2013 to drivable, period-correct condition. Eagle-eyed fans will recognize the vehicle from the recent Nissan commercial, "60 Years in 30 Seconds," with star Brie Larson piloting numerous heritage Nissan and Datsun vehicles.

Seiko Safari Z watch

Nissan is also building on the Z showcase at SEMA to introduce a limited-edition Seiko Safari Z watch that pays homage to the Seiko sponsorship graphics on the original race-winning 240Z rally car.

The watch is limited to just 240 pieces, with "Safari" and "Z" branding plus a Nissan "23" race number on its face. Each watch will be individually numbered on the caseback. Watches will be available beginning Oct. 31 at nismosafariwatch.orderpromos.com .

The Safari Rally Z Tribute will appear at SEMA alongside a replica of the Datsun 240Z Safari that took first place in 1971.

The Tribute model sits two inches higher thanks to a revised suspension that includes special NISMO parts.

The Tribute also rides on Yokohama Geolandar M/T G003 225/65 tires that are fitted to unique black wheels.

The front end is decked out with six LED auxiliary lights, as well as a skid plate to protect the mechanical bits.

The V-6 engine receives a tune from AMS Performance that sees horsepower rise north of the 400 mark.

The Z is also fitted with a cold air intake, a carbon-fiber engine cover, a heat exchange, a twin-disc clutch and flywheel, and a cat-back exhaust.

The interior remains mostly stock but features a map and auxiliary gauges that mimic the setup of the original rally car.

The cabin also includes a roll bar, four-point harnesses, and Recaro bucket seats.

Thankfully the Safari Rally Z Tribute uses the six-speed manual transmission.

While the modern tradition of turning practical family cars into rally racers is good, there was a time when automakers expected their sports cars to win rallies, and that was great. Nissan won the 1971 East African Safari Rally in a 240Z, and its latest build for the 2023 SEMA show pays tribute to that success.

Built by Tommy Pike, the one-off rally Z has been raised with KW Safari suspension, as well as NISMO parts. It also gets 17 x 7.5-inch prototype NISMO Safari wheels wrapped in Yokohama GEOLANDAR M/T G003 tires, and the total ride height increase is set at 2 inches.

Tommy Pike also added some protection to the Z’s underbelly. This includes front bumper guards and a skid plate, as well as a set of NISMO Off Road LED lights.

To keep the driver safe, the Z has had Recaro Pole Position seats with four-point harnesses. The twin-turbo V6 has been tuned by AMS to make more than 400 hp (298 kW/405 PS), featuring a cat-back exhaust system, cold air intake, a carbon fiber engine cover, a coolant expansion tank, a street twin-disc clutch, and flywheel.

Finished in red with a black hood, the Safari Rally Z Tribute is designed to look just like the number 11 Datsun 240Z that won the 1971 East African Safari Rally , with Edgar Herrmann at the wheel and Hans Schüller navigating. A milestone for the brand, the win was its second in a row, following the victory of the Datsun Bluebird 1600SSS in 1970.

The show car will be on display next to a replica of the rally-winning racecar at this year’s SEMA show . The winning 1971 240Z is also being honored by Seiko, which has introduced the $299 NISMO Seiko Safari Watch. With a red and blue NATO-style strap, and Z branding on the face, the watch is available to buy now .

Nissan Z Gets The 911 Dakar Treatment As Tribute To Safari Rally-Winning 240Z

The concept pays homage to the Safari Rally-winning 1971 Datsun 240Z.

Nissan is going off-road mad at the 2023 SEMA show and has revealed a Safari Rally Z Tribute concept as an homage to the Datsun 240Z that won the 1971 East African Safari Rally in Kenya. This follows a curious Nissan Juke tribute concept in 2021 , but thankfully, the new concept stays true to its roots by actually beefing up the new Nissan Z to Porsche 911 Dakar standards of off-road aesthetics and capability.

The homage to the #11 Datsun 240Z rally car looks the part, not just due to the new Z's reto design elements that hark back to the original, but because of its matching livery and design accouterments specially made for the concept. Built by Tommy Pike Customs - a South Carolina-based car custom shop that also brought Nissan concepts at last year's SEMA Show - the livery is a sublime callback to the original's orange-and-black scheme.

To make the Nissan Z off-road ready, the builder installed custom KW Safari suspension and Nismo suspension parts, raising the ride height by two inches. At each corner, 17-inch prototype Nismo Safari wheels are wrapped in Yokohama Geolandar M/T G003 tires.

With its ride height taken care of, it needs to be protected from rocks it may run into at high speeds, so it wears a bespoke front bumper guard and underbody skid plate. Then, perched atop its black hood, Nismo LED off-road spotlights are the ultimate callback to the original rally car.

Inside, Recaro Pole Position bucket seats with red inserts and four-point harnesses ensure race-readiness and a custom rollbar aims to protect in the event of a rollover.

Under the hood is a tuned version of the VR30DDTT 3.0-liter twin-turbo engine with over 400 horsepower (the stock figure). Nissan hasn't divulged the full details, only that the car was tuned by AMS Performance. It's partnered with a Nismo Track cat-back exhaust, could air intakes, carbon fiber engine cover, coolant expansion tank, heat exchanger, and a twin-disc clutch and flywheel. AMS has tuning packages capable of getting as much as 500 hp from the VR30DDTT, so we wouldn't be surprised if this concept has more poke than even the official Z Nismo's 420 ponies - double that of the original rally car.

The Safari Rally Z Tribute will be on display at the SEMA show alongside a vintage replica of the #11 240Z owned by collector Randy Jaffe. Also on the Nissan stand will be the Forsberg Frontier Off-Road Race Truck fresh off a class win at the NORRA 500 and the Rugged Rouge and Sentra project builds .

Nissan Z concept pays homage to Safari Rally-winning 240Z

Porsche 911s styled like the rally cars that competed in the East African Safari Rally back in the 1970s and '80s have become popular in recent years. Porsche even launched its own last year in the form of the limited-edition 911 Dakar .

However, Porsche wasn't the only automaker that found success in the Kenyan rally. Nissan was another, initially in 1970 with the Datsun Bluebird 1600SSS. Nissan even won the event several more times, including in 1971 with a Datsun 240Z.

At the upcoming 2023 SEMA aftermarket show , Nissan plans to pay tribute to the rally-winning 240Z with a modern take based on the current-generation Z sports car . It's called the Nissan Safari Rally Z Tribute, and it's a one-off concept built by South Carolina's Tommy Pike Customs, the same company that built the Datsun Sunny Truck powered by a Nissan Leaf electric powertrain for last year's SEMA show.

Among the upgrades is a custom suspension containing parts from Nismo and KW. It raises the ride height by 2.0 inches and helps to accommodate prototype 17-inch Nismo Safari wheels wrapped in chunky Yokohama Geolandar M/T (G003) tires.

Nissan Safari Rally Z Tribute

Nissan Safari Rally Z Tribute

Underbody protection, including a front guard and skid plate, is also featured, as is additional lighting lifted out of the Nismo Off Road catalog. Interior upgrades include a custom roll bar with harnesses and Recaro Pole Position bucket seats with custom trim.

More power was also added to the Z's twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6. No figure was given, but Illinois' AMS Performance has tuned the engine for more than the stock 400-hp rating.

Nissan will present the Safari Rally Z Tribute at the SEMA show together with a replica of the 240Z that won the 1971 East African Safari Rally. There's no word on whether the automaker plans to offer a version of the Z along the lines of this SEMA build.

The show runs Oct. 31 to Nov. 3 in Las Vegas. Nissan will also show up with the recently revealed Sentra DET concept .

Nissan Built a Safari Rally Z Tribute for SEMA and, Unfortunately, Just SEMA

The build by Tommy Pike Customs honors the 1971 East African Safari Rally-winning Datsun 240Z.

Nissan News photo

NicoDeMattia

In 1971, a Datsun 240Z rally car won the East African Safari Rally and looked kick-ass doing it. To honor that beautiful desert runner, Nissan is bringing a Safari Rally Z Tribute car to SEMA, which will run from October 31 through November 3. As someone who's fully a member of the "Rally All the Cars" camp, I fully support this build and pray Nissan does something unthinkable and puts it into production.

This Nissan Rally Z Tribute is the work of Tommy Pike and his South Carolina-based team at Tommy Pike Customs, who built it for Nissan to display at SEMA, alongside the rest of the brand's concepts . However, it isn't just an auto show stage car; this off-roading Z has the mechanical upgrades to handle some real-deal Safari driving.

Nissan News photo

Its ride height is raised two inches thanks to a custom KW Safari suspension and Nismo parts. That higher ride height allows it to fit 17x7.5-inch Nismo Safari prototype wheels and Yokohama Geolandar M/T G003 tires. A front bumper guard and skid plate protect some of its belly, rally lights mounted to its hood and front bumper provide nighttime desert illumination, and custom Recaro Pole Position seats—with four-point harnesses—keep its passengers safe and snug. It's unclear if Nissan will use this Safari Rally Z Tribute for anything other than auto show eye candy but, if it does, it seems like it can handle much more.

The 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 gets a cold-air intake, a cat-back exhaust, and a twin-disc clutch and flywheel for its manual transmission. Nissan claims it makes more than the stock Z's 400 horsepower, but doesn't say exactly how much.

Nissan News photo

Tommy Pike Customs did a great job making the new Z look just like the '71 rally winner, with an almost identical paint job and sponsorship livery. Obviously, it's almost impossible to beat the looks of the original 240Z, as it was such a perfectly designed car from the beginning, but Tommy Pike and Nissan should be applauded for bringing the world a fitting tribute.

One of the original sponsors for the 1971 240Z rally car was Seiko. To celebrate that partnership, Seiko and Nissan partnered up again to make the limited-edition Seiko Safari Z watch , which will debut alongside the Safari Z Tribute at SEMA. The watch is made to look like the original sponsorship graphics, has a black/red/blue NATO strap, uses a caliber 6N52 quartz movement, and will be limited to just 240 units.

Nissan News photo

I know Nissan will never actually produce this Safari Z, as it's having a hard enough time selling regular Zs . However, with both Porsche and Lamborghini building rally versions of their own sports cars, we all know what Nissan's next move should be.

Nissan 370Z safari Z-Adventure is ready to rally on Yokohama 33s, gold wheels

The car was built for the canceled tokyo auto salon.

nissan z safari

The Nissan 370Z might be on its way out the door, but it still has a few tricks left. The long-serving sports car has seen just about every type of modification, and now that list includes a safari-style rally raid race car. Called the Z-Adventure, the beefed-up sports car looks ready to tackle Dakar.

Yokohama Tire built the Z for this year's Tokyo Auto Salon , but the event was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. So instead, Yokohama is releasing it now to promote its gold Advan Racing RC III wheels and Geolandar M/T G0003 33-inch tires.

The safari-style build, which takes a car not originally meant for off-roading and giving it a lift and knobby tires, has gained popularity in recent years. It's as much an offshoot of overlanding as it is a rebellion against slammed cars, and results can be mixed. The Z Advenure's professional quality, however, and the fact that the 370Z is already a pretty old dog, makes this an interesting build.

While keeping its sports car silhouette, the Z Adventure adds massive fiberglass fender flares to accommodate LT255/75R17 front and 33x12.50R17 LT tires typically meant for a Land Cruiser or Pajero. Its Advan RC III 10-spoke alloys were developed by Yokohama's wheel division for rally cars. The suspension gets a lift from remote reservoir coilovers by King Off-Road of California, while the underbelly gets protection from a Jaos skid plate.

More typical Z modifications can also be found, like a Wilwood brake kit, Bride racing seats with six-point belts, and HKS exhaust. On the other hand, an electric winch and sand ladders mounted across the rear spoiler aren't bits you'd find on your typical modified 370Z. Yokohama says it's even capable of towing a small trailer for dirtbikes or snowmobiles. IPF driving lights and a four-point roll bar round out the safety modifications.

Yokohama Tire says it wants to show the Z Adventure at off-roading events to promote this unique style of rig. We have to admit, it does look pretty fun to drive, and donor 370Zs are plentiful. Perhaps a red and black tribute to the Datsun 240Z that won both the 1971 and 1973 Safari Rally is in order.

Nissan Safari Rally Z Tribute Concept Breaks Cover At SEMA 2023

  • Nissan showcases the Safari Z Tribute, a rally-oriented concept car that pays homage to their motorsport heritage and features off-road and performance upgrades.
  • The Safari Z is powered by an AMS-tuned engine and equipped with NISMO parts such as suspension, exhaust system, and cold air intake.
  • The Safari Z's exterior enhancements resemble the iconic #11 Datsun 240Z rally car, with custom lighting, front bumper guard, skid plate, and a suspension lift to tackle various terrains.

Nissan pays homage to their decades-long motorsport heritage at SEMA 2023 by showcasing the twin-turbo Safari Z Tribute, a modified variant of the popular Nissan Z sports car. The Safari Z is a rally-oriented concept that is outfitted with off-road and performance upgrades that not only enhance the power and control but allow the coupe to embark beyond the pavement.

Nissan unveiled the Safari Z tribute car alongside its inspiration, a restored #11 Datsun 240Z . The original #11 Datsun 240Z won the 1971 East Africa Safari Rally with driver Edgar Herman and navigator Hans Schuler in the cockpit. The victory marked the second consecutive win by a driver in a Datsun, with the 1970 event won by the Datsun Bluebird 1600 SSS.

Nissan reinvigorates their storied legacy of rally motorsports with their latest concept. Designed by South Carolina-based custom car creator, Tommy Pike and his team of experts, the Nissan Safari Z blends past legacy with modern prowess. And what better place to unveil an off-road vehicle than Las Vegas? What with the miles and miles of desert, there’s plenty of room to test the Safari Z in formidable conditions.

We have sourced info from Nissan, and Nissan Global, to bring you this feature on the Nissan Safari Z introduced at the 2023 SEMA auto show.

Custom NISMO Upgrades Take The Nissan Z Off-Road

The Safari Z’s looks and exterior enhancements do its predecessor justice, beautifully blending the timeless essence of the old-school rally aesthetic with Nissan's modern, sleek tuners. However, the performance upgrades are what get the off-road and rally enthusiasts excited. And the Safari Z tribute car has plenty, including a handful of custom NISMO parts.

Nissan Safari Z Performance Upgrades

  • KW suspension
  • NISMO suspension parts
  • NISMO strut tower brace
  • Tommy Pike custom brake package
  • NISMO cat-back system
  • Yokohama GEOLANDAR M/T G003 tires
  • AMS-tuned VR30 DDTT engine
  • NISMO cold air intake
  • NISMO coolant expansion tank
  • NISMO heat exchanger
  • NISMO street twin-disc clutch and flywheel

The Safari Z is motivated by an AMS-tuned VR30DDTT engine said to exceed 400 horsepower. The spunky engine pairs with a NISMO cat-back exhaust system, cold air intake, and street twin-disc clutch and flywheel. The transmission isn’t specified, but the 2024 Nissan Z from which the Safari Z is built upon features the option between a six-speed manual transmission and a nine-speed automatic transmission. A carbon fiber engine cover reduces weight while adding to the visual impact of the replica.

Tommy Pike and his team raised and toughened the suspension to ready the asphalt-oriented Z for rally conditions. This includes a custom KW Safari suspension and NISMO suspension parts, which give the Safari Z a 2.0-inch ride height lift. While the raised ride height certainly helps when driving in unpredictable conditions, it also serves to accommodate the large Yokohama GEOLANDAR M/T G003 tires, which wrap around 17 X 7.5-inch prototype NISMO Safari wheels.

The Safari Z Pays Homage To Nissan Motorsport Heritage

Nissan and Tommy Pike set their sights on the Nissan Z with a box full of NISMO upgrade parts and a singular objective: take this street car and transform it into the ultimate rally car. Though the Safari Z has yet to produce performance specs, it certainly looks the part! Cosmetically, the Nissan Safari Z resembles a modern version of the #11 Datsun 240Z rally car. The teardrop-shaped coupe sports the same orange paint job and decal layout as the 1971 rally-winning Datsun, though specific decal brands are changed to reflect modern Nissan backers.

Nissan Safari Z Cosmetic Upgrades

  • Tommy Pike custom aluminum hood-mounted light pods
  • Four-inch NISMO off-road driving lights
  • Six-inch NISMO off-road driving lights
  • Tommy Pike Customs front bumper guard and skid plate
  • Recaro Pole Position seats customized by Tommy Pike
  • Custom integrated harness bar with four-point harness
  • Yokohama GEOLANDAR off-road tires
  • Custom Safari Z wheels
  • NISMO carbon fiber engine cover

The number also changes from the iconic #11 to #23, possibly alluding to the year in which it was unveiled. The Safari Z features commensurate lighting, as well as NISMO off-road LEDs, combined they deliver additional illumination for dusty conditions and night races. The Safari Z receives a new front bumper and skid plates for additional durability, as well as a 2.0-inch suspension lift, ensuring the car can perform in rally conditions including dirt, sand, mud, rocks, and rough terrain.

Interior-wise, the Safari Z received custom roll bars and Recaro Pole Position seats, both customized by Tommy Pike with unique accents. The rally replica also gained four-point seat harnesses for maximum safety. Tommy Pike and the team of experts behind the Nissan Safari Z tribute car leaned hard into the rugged, go-anywhere safari vehicles and produced an eye-catching piece of work with an interesting story and real off-road capability.

Nissan x Seiko Debut The NISMO Safari Z Watch At SEMA, Limited To Only 240-Pieces

Seiko Maiin

When it comes to honoring motorsport history, Nissan knows how to do it in style. At the 2023 SEMA show, the JDM legend took the wraps off the new Nissan Z Safari Rally Tribute car, paying homage to the iconic 1971 Datsun Fairlady Z’s victory at the 19th East-Africa Safari Rally. As if that weren’t exciting enough news for car enthusiasts, Nissan Motorsports has teamed up with Seiko, one of the original sponsors of that legendary rally racecar, to launch an exclusive timepiece: the limited-edition NISMO Safari Z watch.

Limited to just 240 pieces, this watch is a must-have for die-hard Nissan fans and watch collectors alike. Inspired by the exhilarating world of rally racing, it showcases an embossed blue dial decorated with metallic elements and Nissan’s iconic #23, a clever play on words in Japanese. The watch also features Nissan Z and Safari branding, making it a tasteful nod to racing and timekeeping heritage. Completing the look is a color-matched NATO-style strap with racing stripes in black, blue, and red.

When it comes to specs, the Seiko x Nissan’s newest creation doesn’t disappoint. It comes with a 60-minute track marked in five-minute increments, LumiBrite hands and markers for easy visibility, and a date calendar for practicality. The case measures a versatile 40mm in size and is crafted from polished stainless steel with a black ion-finish bezel. Water-resistant up to 100 meters, the watch is powered by Caliber 6N52 quartz movement. And at a price point of $299, it offers an attractive blend of style, functionality, and heritage. The all-new NISMO Seiko Safari Watch is currently for sale on the NISMOSafariWatch website . View all Nissan models currently for sale on duPont REGISTRY by clicking the link below.
