"The No-Rush Tour" Based on The Original - Optimized for Travelers who arrive by Hurtigruten

Based on the many requests we have received lately, Blue Puffin is now offering a shorter version of our original North Cape Sightseeing tour especially catered to Hurtigruten guests .

This is for their North-bound journey, with arrival to Honningsvåg at 10:55 a.m. and departure time at 02:30 p.m.

How does it work?

We prefer to be clear to avoid misunderstandings.

Unfortunately, it is not possible to join a 4-hour tour, if your ship is in town for only 3:35 hours… This is why we have created Hurtig Special !

Sorry to say, but we need to cut parts of the original itinerary – there is no way around it.

We chose to leave out the King Crab Show, because there is simply no time.

We also chose to stay at North Cape shorter than on our regular North Cape Sightseeing tours, which is the only way to still visit Kamøvvær, the most picturesque fishing village on our island. We believe this is still very much within reason. On our regular departures, we recommend to watch the panorama movie. It is about 15 minutes long. By not watching it, you gain some precious time.

north cape norway tour

The North Cape or Nordkapp is the northernmost point of mainland Europe.

The North Cape, as its name suggests, is the northernmost point of mainland Europe and a magnet for visitors from Europe and afar. The main drawcard is visiting the North Cape plateau at midnight in summer to experience the eternity of the midnight sun, as it comes down to touch the horizon before it again starts its rise. A great escape from the crowds at the North Cape plateau is doing a 9 kilometre midnight hike (approx 4 hours return) to Knivskjellodden, which is actually 1500 metres further north than the plateau.

There is an Information Exhibition hall as you arrive to the North cape plus a bar and cafe. Honningsvåg is the closest town to the North Cape.

Don’t miss an excursion to the North Cape plateau above the Arctic Circle to witness the sun that never sets.

Nordkapp – the North Cape – is the end of the world

In the same way as points such as the Cape of Good Hope and Cape Horn, the North Cape is a place that every authentic traveller simply has to visit. The outermost reach of Europe marks a celebratory finish to any journey to the north.

You cannot get further north in Norway than the North Cape, or Nordkapp. Since the 16th c., the North Cape, or Nordkapp, as been among the premier sailing marks of the world.Since 1664 people come here to look out into the sea and feel that they have completed something.

A true voyager must go to Nordkapp, the North Cape, at some point in his life.  These days, it is easier than before, but the end of the world feeling is still there.

Looking North © Beate Juliussen

This is where you turn around

At 71 degrees north, the North Cape forms the northern extremity of Europe. The 307 metre high cliff, diving directly down into the Arctic Ocean, has  for centuries been a point of reference for seafarers. Along with the Cape of Good Hope, Cape Farewell, Cape Horn and Cape Comorin, it a milestone for sailors and world travellers alike.

The North Cape is Europe’s most northerly point

The gallery east of the sun represents the boldness of nature around the north cape, knivskjelodden is the northernmost north in norway, knyskanes is the old name.

Of course, Nordkapp has never been a secret to the locals. People lived here for thousands of years, and the Sami culture emerged at least 2000 years ago. From the 14 th C. onwards, there were several small communities of Norse speaking fishermen on the island of Magerøya, and they called the cape Knyskanes. Although dried cod was sold in Bergen to the international market, Europeans had vague ideas about the far north.

The North Cape is discovered and named

In 1553 a British expedition searching for the North East passage to the Far East passed the unmissable promontory, and the navigator Richard Chancellor named it the North Cape. He had noted that the coast towards the east turned slightly south. The Norwegian word Nordkapp is a mere translation of North Cape. They never found an alternative sea route to the Indies but opened trade with the Russian port city of Arkhangelsk (Archangel) instead.

Noordkap becomes a point of reference to the seafarers of the world

The name North Cape then started to turn up on sea charts and world maps, frequently named Noordkap by Dutch cartographers. Whale hunters from the Netherlands, England and France as well as traders heading for Russia meticulously chartered their passing of that milestone in this age of discoveries. Every sailor knew about it.

The first tourist gets to Nordkapp in 1664

In 1664, the Italian priest Francesco Negri reached the North Cape on foot. His summed his experience up like this: “My curiosity is now satisfied, and I can return to Denmark, and God willing my homeland”. He is the first known real tourist to reach this extremity of the world. In 1795, the French prince Louis Philippe d’Orléans was escaping French revolutionary assassins by going to places far away, among them Le Cap Nord, Nordkapp. As he also impregnated the daughter of a nearby vicar, his DNA still flows in local veins.

Modern tourism started in 1873

Oscar II of Sweden-Norway made an epic journey to the north in 1873. His ship anchored at Hornvika bay, and the young and fit king climbed the thousand steps up to the plateau itself. This kickstarted tourism, and exclusive cruise ships sailed up and had champagne in a wooden pavilion up there, before it was blown away by a storm. Another early guest was King Rama of Siam (Thailand) in 1907. The North Cape established itself as a must-see for well-heeled travellers. In 1956, the road was extended all the way to the cape, and since then most people have arrived there by car or bus.

3 fun activities at the North Cape

Gjesværstappan by the north cape is one of norway’s biggest birdcliffs, follow the snowplow towards the north cape, search for the northern lights with an atv, knivskjelodden is actually further north.

We have to reveal a secret. Nordkapp really isn’t the end of Europe. There is a cape next to Nordkapp that is some 1400 metres (..almost a mile..) further north. This point is, however, a rather unimpressive place, and was never any point of reference for sailors. The hike to this point is not particularly strenuous, but you need good windproof clothing. We strongly recommend it, though, because of the view south east to the North Cape cliff. And the feeling of beating the North Cape.

Magerøya is the North Cape Island

Nordkapp isn’t found on the mainland, instead it has its own island, Magerøya. The island has a steep coast, but the top of the island is a flattish, rolling expanse. The vegetation is sparse, although low-grown birch and willow grows on south-facing hillsides. Honningsvåg, the main settlement, is on the protected inside, or southern side, of the island, and a further 3 fishing villages are found in sheltered places along the coast.

Going to the North Cape in winter

For many years, Nordkapp was totally inaccessible in winter. The road was opened at some point in spring by heavy snowploughs, and remained opened to the first snowfall. Now, it is actually possible to go there in the middle of winter. A snow plough drives first one or two times per day, and the tourist bus can follow. You then get to see the Cape rough and cold weather, really giving an end-of-the-world feel. If a Polar low suddenly strikes, the road is closed without notice, and you have to stay in Honningsvåg instead.

If you’re lucky, you can see the Northern Lights on Nordkapp

Visitors in winter often choose the tour going to the North Cape in the evening. With a bit of luck with the weather, one can be lucky enough to see the Northern Lights, the aurora borealis, on the cape itself. This is far from guaranteed, though. We strongly recommend winter guests to try their luck, but then combine with the inland location of Alta. Here the climate is more stable, and you stand far better chances of seeing the green lady.

Magerøya is summer grazing land for the reindeer

Sometimes in April, landgang vessels from the navy land, and thousands of furry invaders run on land. Reindeer, owned by Sami families from the inland community of Karasjok, graze on the island all summer. In June, they look a bit scruffy as they shed their hairs, by August the new winter fur has grown. Then Rudolph has also gained weight ahead of the upcoming winter. After the hard work of moving the reindeer, the Sami can enjoy life and look at the tourists visiting their souvenir stalls. Sometimes in September-October, the reindeer swim their way back to the mainland, and start the long walk towards the Finnish border.

Gjesvær is protected by skerries and islands

The western end of the island looks different from the rest of the island. Instead of the steep cliffs, Gjesvær is surrounded by islands and skerries, most notably the Gjesværstappan. This is one of Norway’s biggest bird colonies, with hundreds of thousands of puffins, guillemots, gannets and cormorants. In spring and summer, bird safaris go out here to see the birds.

Skarsvåg is the world’s northernmost fishing village

The little village of Skarsvåg calls itself the word’s northernmost fishing village. Today, only some 60 people live here, mainly from fishing and tourism. From here, you can walk to the natural arch in the hillside called Kirkeporten (“the church gate”), and through the gate, you can see Nordkapp, easily recognised by its horn-shaped cliff.  Shoppers also stock up at Julehuset (“the Christmas shop”), but going for a walk along the dockside costs nothing at all.

Kamøyvær is a little fjord by itself

Kamøyvær is not to far away from Honningsvåg, and looks very picturesque with big boulders and rocky islands offshore, with colourful houses. Come here for the Gallery East of the Sun, with fun, colourful collage pictures from the island. The artist herself, Eva Schmutterer from Nuremberg, is usually there to explain her very special technique.

Honningsvåg used to be Little Chicago

Honningsvåg is the main centre, a mere half hour away from the cape. This is a compact little town, with shops, cafes, restaurants and hotels. In the 1950ies and 60ies, Honningsvåg got frequent visits from Norwegian and international trawlers, delivering their catch to the busy fish factories lining the dockside. Young and rough fishermen on leave visited the taverns in town, and things could get heated with the unfavourable boy/girl ratio. Black eyes and tooth loss were to be counted in when calling at Honningsvåg, earning it the nickname little Chicago. Much to the chagrin of some, things are a lot quieter these days. The decline in the fish industry has meant that the town is a bit smaller, with tourism being as important as fishing. However, at the popular watering hole “Nøden”, the best aspects of Little Chicago are kept alive, a place where you feel alone.

Facts about visiting Nordkapp – the North Cape

Where is the north cape.

The North Cape is a cliff on 71 degrees northern latitude, constituting the northern end of Europe. It is found in the municipality of Nordkapp, where Honningsvåg is the centre. The nearest bigger airport is in Alta.

Nordkapp or North Cape? What is correct?

The term “North Cape” is the original term, coined by English navigator Richard Chancellor in 1553. This name has been used by sailors for centuries, and it would be too bad to give it up. North Cape has then later been translated into Norwegian as Nordkapp, replacing the old term Knyskanes, which today is never used. Nobody is offended if you say North Cape in English, but keep in mind that all signs point to Nordkapp. Terms like Cap Nord (French), Cabo Norte (Spanish), Caponord (Italian), Nordkap (German and Swedish) and Noordkap (Dutch) are also in use. These translations are never wrong or offensive, but are not found on maps and signs anymore.

When should you come to Nordkapp?

The North Cape area used to have a hectic 6-8 weeks of tourism in summer, when the small community was overran. Then there would hardly be a tourist in sight the rest of the year. Mid May to the end of July is the midnight sun period. During this time, hotels tend to fill up, and it feels busy. However, most of the tourists come from cruise ships, being transported directly to the Cape with hardly a stop elsewhere. You can thus walk around Honningsvåg, do hikes, participate in guided tours and excursions, without feeling the weight of tourism. There is absolutely no need to avoid the island of Magerøya at this time. However, on the Cape itself, it can be pretty full around Midnight. August is still tourist season, but less busy. In September , most tourists have left. That is a shame, as the hiking is really good at this time. The Northern Lights start appearing in late August, and by mid September they appear frequently. October and November are definite low season, but the locals are busy with their daily lives. This is really the time for a deep dive into living the local life, and the Northern Lights make frequent apparitions. In December and January , the sun is below the horizon, and it’s dark almost all day. Far from depressing, this is a time for snowmobiling and Northern Lights watching. From February on, the days are longer. Then you can do longer treks on skis and snowmobiles, notably to the North Cape. March is a month when you can have it all, as the days are long, but the Northern Lights are still very much around at night. The Northern Lights are on the wane from early April , but snow is guaranteed. At the end of winter, well into May , the white expanses invite you to outdoor activities. Remember you suncream!

Where should we stay in Nordkapp?

Honningsvåg has two proper hotels open all year. In addition, another two open in the busy summer season. There is a youth hostel open in the summer, and there is one camping site. Smaller fish camps and holiday villages are found in the smaller villages on the island. Prebooking is essential in June-July. The rest of the year, it’s not full at all.

How do you get to the North Cape?

There are buses all year from Honningsvåg to the North Cape plateau. The bus is frequently cancelled in winter due to weather, though. Honningsvåg has a little airport with frequent connections to Hammerfest and Tromsø, from where there are flights to Oslo. A cheaper option might be to fly to Alta, because of the numerous discount tickets available. From Alta there is a daily bus, and Honningsvåg should be combined with nearby destinations like Alta and Hammerfest anyway. From Alta you can also take a catamaran to Hammerfest, a very comfortable ride, and from Hammerfest you can take the Hurtigruten to Honningsvåg. You can drive from anywhere in Norway to Honningvåg all year.

Nordkyn is the next peninsula

Honningsvåg and the Cape is bustling with life in summer. However, if you take the Hurtigruten 2 hours to the next peninsula, is a different story. The Nordkyn peninsula is Europe’s northernmost mainland, and some 2300 people live her, chiefly in Kjøllefjord and Mehamn, but also in smaller hamlets. This is an area of lovely, easy hikes, small museums and tight-knit communities, and has an away from it all – feel.

Finnkirka stands proud on Europe’s most northern headland

Foldalbruket rose from the ashes of world war two, hike across the hilltops to skjøtningberg, gamvik museum tells the story of the nordkyn peninsula, slettnes lighthouse is a beacon on europe’s most northerly headland, walk to the sea cliffs above the famous finnkirka.

Visit the North Cape in Norway

The North Cape in Norway is northern Scandinavia's most popular travel destination—and for good reason. The North Cape is a monumental natural experience. Along with breathtaking views and unusual climatic conditions, the dramatic cliff allows you to stand at Europe's northern end.

About the North Cape

The North Cape is a 1,000-foot-high cliff that is generally referred to as the northernmost point of Europe. A quarter of a million tourists visits the North Cape each summer, making it one of Norway's top travel destinations . It is located in the region of Finnmark, also called the Norwegian Lapland.

Region of Finnmark

On the same latitude as Greenland and Alaska , you will find Finnmark. Norway's Finnmark region is a wild and wonderful part of Norway. In Finnmark, travelers can visit 19 unique destinations, offering everything from quiet, relaxing vacations to adventurous outdoor trips.

While the North Cape is a wonderful experience in itself, travelers can also enjoy bird safaris to a nature reservation with more than two million seabirds or exciting deep-sea rafting at night. In the summer, there is no sunset; there's the midnight sun .

During the rest of the year, you can view the northern lights (Aurora Borealis) . A popular activity at the North Cape is to hike on the snow-covered mountains and cliffs. Watch out for the length of the day here in winter, though, as it can stay dark for quite a while during the time of the polar nights .

Getting There

From Oslo, Norway , travelers have several options to get to the North Cape:

  • Drive from Oslo to the North Cape.
  • Fly from Oslo to Alta/Hammerfest.
  • Take a North Cape cruise.
  • Take the train or bus.

Accommodations

DAY 1 : Oslo*

You've arrived

Welcome to Norway! First stop: Norway’s thriving capital, Oslo. Your hotel is located in the heart of the city, with the rest of the day or evening spent at your leisure.

You’ll likely want to explore the many charms the cosmopolitan capital has to offer. Why not make your way to the city centre, making sure to take snaps of the architecturally distinct Rådhuset town hall, Royal Palace, and Oslo Cathedral.

Along the waterfront, there’s Aker Brygge for popular eateries, the imposing Akershus Fortress, and the gleaming new buildings around Bjørvika waterfront. The latter is where you’ll find modern attractions such as the Oslo Opera House and landmark new Edvard Munch Museum which, as you’d expect, has the world’s largest collection of works by the iconic Norwegian artist.

Or, if there’s enough daylight left, you could even jump on the metro from Central station. A short 20-minute ride is all it takes to bring you to the edge of a tranquil alpine forest that overlooks the city.

DAY 2 : Oslo*

Discovering Norway’s capital

After breakfast at your hotel, we’ll go on a tour to two of Oslo’s main attractions. Vigeland Sculpture Park is located at the centre of splendid Frogner Park. There, you’ll find more than 200 visually striking sculptures in bronze, granite, and cast iron by prolific Norwegian artist Gustav Vigeland.

Further north from Vigeland, just outside of Oslo, is Holmenkollen Ski Jump. You won’t be doing any jumping yourself, but the impressive building enjoys panoramic views over the city, lakes, and fjord. Beneath the ski jump is also the world’s oldest ski museum featuring 2,500 pairs of skis and 4,000 years of skiing history.

The tour will end at the pier where your ship, MS Trollfjord, is waiting to depart by early evening. Once we’ve welcomed you aboard and you’ve settled into your cabin or suite, you’ll meet your Coastal Experience Team. You’ll get to know each member of the team well as they give lectures and organise onboard activities for you throughout your voyage.

Meet your fellow guests in the ship’s two-storey panorama lounge and mark the moment we make history by sailing from Oslo for the first time. Watch as the capital’s twinkling lights fade into the distance and admire the scenery and various points of interests seen along Oslofjord.

DAY 3 : Kristiansand

The city of lighthouses

Sitting along the southern tip of the country, Kristiansand is Norway’s fifth largest city. We aim to be alongside from morning to late afternoon, giving you plenty of time to explore.

As you walk around Kristiansand, you might notice that the city is built on a very uniform grid plan, with several straight roads running from the harbour all the way through the city. These roads are lined with architecture from different eras, evidence of the extensive rebuilds the city had to go through after major fires in the 18th and 19th centuries-, and a World War II attack.

Kristiansand is on a mission to become the most sustainable port in Europe. Find out more about this admirable quest on an optional excursion that includes a visit to Odderøya Island. Here, you can see beautiful views of the ocean and city and visit 18th-century military barracks transformed into creative artist studios that run several sustainable initiatives.

Kristiansand’s 20th-century military past is the focus of an optional excursion to Batterie Vara. Originally built as a German fort in World War II, it features the world’s second largest cannon ever to be mounted on land.

Another optional excursion takes you to the working Lindesnes Lighthouse, which marks Norway’s southernmost point. See the beacon that has been guiding seafarers to safety on dark nights since the early 20th century, and learn about the long history of the site that goes all the way back to 1656.

  • Highlights of the South Coast & South Cape Join our guide on an overland exploration of southern Norway. Admire varied Nordic scenery, taste exquisite wine, and have lunch at Norway’s southernmost point.
  • Kristiansand WWII History Tour Step into the past as you learn about southern Norway’s WWII history on a tour of Kristiansand’s historical sites.
  • Norwegian Christmas at Skraastad Farm How do Norwegians celebrate Christmas? This tour will answer that question, and many more you might have about Norwegian culture and local traditions.
  • Green Walking Tour of Kristiansand Embark on a fascinating walking tour of Kristiansand, one of the most environmentally friendly ports in Europe.

DAY 4 : Haugesund and Hardangerfjord

Viking history

As we sail past the southern tip of Norway, we’ll begin heading north along the west coast. Just past Stavanger, we’ll reach Haugesund, the ‘Home of the Viking Kings’.

The nickname is inspired by sites such as St. Olav’s Church, built in 1250 by King Håkon Hå. There’s also Haraldshaugen, a national monument reputed to be the first king’s burial site. Why not step back in time to the Viking Age at Nordvegen Visiting Centre which features exhibitions presented by a fictional Harald Fairhair himself.

After a short stay in Haugesund, you’ll rejoin the ship for some scenic cruising in Hardangerfjord. At 179 kilometres in length, it is the second longest fjord in the country, and fifth longest in the world.

The stunning waterway is one of Norway’s finest. See mountain scenery everywhere you look, with the white peaks that tower over the fjord being reflected in the shimmering water below.

The region is famous for its apple products, from jams and juice to its award-winning cider, which one food writer described as ‘Nordic Champagne’.

  • Haugesund Viking Tour by Bus Immerse yourself in the rich Viking heritage and coastal culture of Avaldsnes, Norway’s oldest royal seat.
  • E-Bike the Coast of Haugesund Let the e-bike take the strain as you roll through the beautiful nature and rich history of the homeland of the Viking kings.
  • Haugesund Art Walk with a Local Artist Glassblowing, architecture and Marilyn Monroe – there’s more to this art walk through picturesque Haugesund than you might expect!
  • Viking Adventure by RIB Get a unique perspective on Norway’s Viking history as you whoosh along the beautiful, narrow strait that gave Norway its name.

DAY 5 : Ålesund

A picturesque town

After a hearty breakfast on the ship, we’ll dock mid-morning at a town that spreads out across a string of islands. With almost an entire day to explore, you’ll have plenty of time to see all that Ålesund has to offer.

As we approach the shore, you might first notice the distinctive style of architecture. Every detail of the buildings, from the bright colours to the rounded spires, were all inspired by the Art Nouveau style, which was popular in the early 1900s. Almost the entire town received a makeover in the style when it was rebuilt after a major fire in 1904.

As you leave the waterfront, you’ll find yourself in a fairy-tale town, wandering narrow streets lined with unique houses. If your camera’s memory card isn’t already full after this, you can get impressive photos of the archipelago from the nearby Mount Aksla viewpoint. The 418 steps leading there might look intimidating, but the views are well worth the effort.

You can also visit the Atlantic Sea Park, Norway’s first marine science centre. This is one of Northern Europe’s largest saltwater aquariums, providing a home to seals, otters, and crabs, as well as many other kinds of marine life. You can even see Humboldt Penguins here, a species otherwise absent north of the equator.

Optional activities may include a fjord tour of either Geirangerfjord or Hjørundfjord. If weather allows, kayaking may even be an option. Imagine gliding across the surface of the fjord, skimming your hand over the pristine water as marine life swims in the depths below you.

  • Architecture & Breweries - Ålesund on Foot Explore Ålesund’s remarkable Art Nouveau architecture then taste some of the best small-brewery beer from the local area.
  • Saga Islands Bus Tour to Alnes - Winter Join this bus tour to experience two islands, one lighthouse and countless tales of the Vikings. The scenery is impressive too!

DAY 6 : Brønnøysund

Distinctive Nordic nature

Surrounded by islands and water, Brønnøysund sits on a narrow peninsula that juts out of the mainland. Around 5,000 people live in this small town, many in colourful houses against a backdrop of gentle slopes and dramatic mountain peaks.

Enjoy the bustling atmosphere of the harbour and take a walk along Havnegata. Drop into one of the pubs for a snack, or treat yourself to a meal in a local restaurant. Wander the visitors’ marina, or visit an 1870 Neo-Gothic stone church.

As we sail, look out for the Vega archipelago, a cluster of some 6,500 islands, skerries, and islets. There’s a UNESCO World Heritage Centre on the island of Gardsøy which showcases how highly prized eider down is harvested from the local eider ducks by providing little huts for them to build their nests in.

On an island south of Brønnøysund, you’ll find Torghatten mountain, recognisable by a natural tunnel that runs through the centre. According to local lore, the hole is the result of a troll who fired an arrow at a young woman who had rejected his advances. As the Troll King threw his hat to protect her, the sun began to rise, turning the hat to stone with a hole in the middle from the arrow.

On an optional excursion, you can take an hour’s walk up to the hole in the mountain. Peer through the tunnel and enjoy the view of the islands around.

We’ll continue sailing north in the afternoon, leaving the Helgeland coast behind us as we cross the Arctic Circle around midnight.

  • Legends of Torghatten and Brønnøysund by Bus - Winter See Brønnøysund’s sights by bus then follow in the footsteps of trolls to a mythologised mountain with a hole right through it.
  • Winter’s Walk and Mini-Concert in Brønnøysund Discover Brønnøysund’s fascinating history, geology and musical talent on this guided winter walk through the town’s highlights.

DAY 7 : Svolvær and Stokmarknes

Lofoten islands and our historic birthplace

Today, we explore Lofoten, a striking group of islands that rise out of the Norwegian Sea. As soon as you see the towering peaks around you with fishing villages clinging to their sides, you’ll understand why this island chain is so often praised as one of Norway’s most stunning locations.

We’ll dock in the town of Svolvær mid-morning. Located on the island of Austvågøya in the heart of Lofoten, Svolvær is the biggest town of the archipelago, humming with shops, restaurants, galleries, and cafés to enjoy. You can also admire views of the Svolvær Goat, a nearby mountain named for resembling a goat and its horns.

A variety of optional excursions are available from Svolvær, including winter fishing, paddling along the coastline in a kayak, or embarking on a bus tour to learn more about Lofoten’s history.

We can’t visit the area without spending some time in Stokmarknes. This historic town is part of Vesterålen, an archipelago just northeast of Lofoten. Of all the places we visit, this one is particularly special to us. It was here that the Original Coastal Express was founded in 1893 by shipping pioneer Richard With.

The Coastal Express soon became a lifeline for Norway’s remote coastal communities, and fittingly, our legacy has been immortalised in the place where it all began. Standing on the waterfront, you’ll find our 1956 ship MS Finnmarken, encased in a glass building like a ship in a bottle.

This is Hurtigrutemuseet, the museum that chronicles our history as Norway’s leading expedition cruise line from start to now. On a guided tour, you can explore the retired vessel and experience the atmosphere of a past era.

  • Lofoten Winter - Art, History, and Henningsvær Get to know Lofoten’s history, admire timeless art in SKREI, and soak up the fishing village atmosphere of Henningsvær.
  • Winter Fishing in Lofoten Try your hand at sea fishing aboard a traditional Norwegian fishing boat from 1917
  • Kayaking in Lofoten - Winter Take to the water and see Svolvær’s coastline from a different perspective as you follow a local guide and paddle aboard your own two-person kayak.
  • Lofoten RIB & Sea Eagle Adventure Go in search of Sea Eagles in the skies above Lofoten aboard a RIB boat, and admire the superb scenery of this wild archipelago.
  • Best of Vesterålen Winter - History, Arts & Culture Tour Experience breathtaking views, rich culture and coastal heritage on a bus tour of the stunning Vesterålen archipelago.
  • The Coastal Express Heritage Tour Take an exclusive tour of the Hurtigruten Museum, home to our full-sized retired ship, in our birthplace of Stokmarknes.
  • Mountain Hike in Vesterålen  (Winter) Follow in the footsteps of trolls on this invigorating hike to scale one of Vesterålen’s majestic mountains.
  • Snowshoeing in Vesterålen Take a short snowshoe hike through the pristine wilderness to a nearby tearoom and glass-blowing studio.

DAY 8 : Tromsø

The gateway to the Arctic

Today you’ll get the chance to see the Arctic Capital itself. Often called the “gateway to the Arctic”, Tromsø is Norway's northernmost university city, and the ideal place to enjoy some proper winter activities, like dog sledding and snowshoeing.

Sitting around 217 miles north of the Arctic Circle, Tromsø experiences Polar Night for just over a month in the winter, and will give you a great chance of seeing the Northern Lights.

This urban city is buzzing with life, with everything from trendy restaurants and cafés to boutique shops selling local crafts and produce, and even high fashion. MS Trollfjord will be in port here for 10 hours, giving you plenty of time to both join optional excursions and explore the city yourself.

Among the activities on offer is a guided tour of the Polar Museum which chronicles the city’s legacy of Arctic hunting and trade. For live animals, head to the Polaria centre, an aquarium home to a variety of Arctic marine species, including seals.

Across the water from Polaria, you’ll find the Arctic Cathedral, standing out in the cityscape due to its striking design and impressive stained-glass window. There may also be opportunity to visit some of Tromsø’s surrounding fjords and possibly the rugged island of Senja.

  • Tromsø, The Arctic Capital – Winter Explore the remarkable polar heritage, modern culture and extraordinary panoramic views of Tromsø, ‘Paris of the North’, in winter.
  • Dog Sledding in Winter Wonderland Join us on a mini polar expedition across the snowy Arctic landscape in the valley of Breivikeidet near Tromsø.
  • The Bucket List - Dogsledding, Ice Domes & Reindeer Enjoy dog sledding, magical ice domes and real-life reindeer on this all-in-one, ultimate bucket list tour of Tromsø.
  • Whale Watching in Arctic Silence Be immersed in Arctic serenity as you get an unforgettable view of orca and humpback whales playing in their natural habitat.
  • Explore Tromsø by E-bike  (Autumn) Hop on an electric bike to explore the city known as the “Paris of the North” with ease. Enjoy a local’s-eye view as you discover little-known sights and admire the gorgeous Arctic scenery.

DAY 9 : Honningsvåg

The northernmost point

Arriving early in the morning, you’ll have a full day in Honningsvåg. The northernmost city on the mainland, Honningsvåg’s landscape is quite distinctive, with barely any trees or bushes. This far north, winters are long and snowfall is high, so get ready for some fantastic winter scenery and activities.

Feel the snow crunching under your snowshoes as you hike across the plains. You might even be able to try your hand at ice fishing, a beloved winter tradition in the far north. Get a taste of the local delicacy, king crab, which is caught in the waters around Honningsvåg and served year-round. Admire local art in the Once Upon a Dream art gallery, and don’t miss the Honningsvåg Church. This is the oldest building in the area, dating back to 1885.

The highlight of any trip to Honningsvåg is a visit to the North Cape. This is one of the northernmost points of mainland Europe, and as we’re visiting in winter, we can get there by snowmobile. Standing near the northern edge of Norway and looking out over the Barents Sea under the polar night sky is a truly special experience. Add the ethereal Northern Lights dancing in the sky above, and you’ve got a sight you’ll never forget.

The cape is marked with a famous globe monument, which demands a selfie or two… or five. When you’re ready, head inside North Cape Hall to warm up, and learn about life in the High Arctic through a short film and a variety of exhibits.

Having reached the northernmost point of our voyage, we’ll turn around and begin going south as we sail away in the evening.

  • North Cape and King Crab Experience - Winter From iconic views at North Cape to delicious king crab in Sarnes, join us as we experience the highlights of Honningsvåg in winter.
  • Quad Biking to North Cape Drive your own quad bike on a thrilling adventure to continental Europe’s northernmost point.
  • Snowmobiling to North Cape Experience raw Arctic nature as your drive yourself on a thrilling snowmobile ride to the European mainland’s northernmost point.
  • Arctic Ice Fishing Take a short snowshoe walk to a nearby lake to try your hand at some ice-fishing before enjoying the taste of your freshly hooked and cooked catch of the day.

DAY 10 : Alta

The city of Northern Lights

Alta is one of the bigger coastal towns we visit, with a population of over 10,000 people. A particularly famous part of the town is Alta River, one of Norway’s best salmon rivers. Here, large salmon are regularly caught, with some even weighing up to 24 kg. You won’t regret trying some fresh grilled salmon in one of the local restaurants.

At 70 degrees north, this town is still far above the Arctic Circle. The area is known for particularly good Northern Lights visibility, so keep your camera ready. If the skies are clear and the conditions are right, you should be able to get some amazing shots of the lights dancing above you.

You can learn more about this incredible natural light show on a guided tour of the town. The Northern Lights Cathedral even has an exhibition showing how Alta became the epicentre for ground-breaking research of the Aurora Borealis between the 19th and 20th centuries.

Increased snowfall in the winter allows for some truly authentic Arctic excursions, like dogsledding. The snow and climate of Alta also creates the perfect conditions to build and maintain the Igloo Hotel, located on the banks of river Alta.

You’ll have the chance to visit and tour the world’s northernmost ice hotel, built out of snow and ice every winter and carved with different artistic themes by local sculptors. Head to the hotel’s ice bar, decorated with handcrafted ice sculptures and order a drink in an ice glass – no ice cubes needed.

  • Visit The Magical Igloo Hotel in Alta Explore the beautiful Igloo Hotel, made entirely from snow and ice. Even your free drink comes in a glass carved from ice!
  • Dog Sledding on Wheels in Alta Try dog sledding on wheels through beautiful countryside near The Northern Lights City and meet the friendly dogs that pull you.
  • Dog Sledding in Alta Go dog sledding through snowy scenery near The Northern Lights City and meet the enthusiastic dogs that pull you.
  • UNESCO Rock Art & Northern Lights Cathedral Peruse prehistoric rock art at Alta Museum and admire the stunning architecture of the city’s iconic cathedral.
  • Hike to Mount Komsa Soak up some of the best views in Alta on this invigorating hike to the summit of Mount Komsa.

DAY 11 : Lødingen

Village life and fjord nature

The administrative centre of a municipality with the same name, Lødingen is a village on the southwestern shore of Hinnøya, with a population of under 2,000. This is a port that our ships used to visit on one of our earlier coastal routes and returning here is a kind of homecoming for us.

We’ll dock at around midday, using Lødingen as a base for a few hours to explore more of Hinnøya island, Norway’s largest island south of Svalbard. Wander the streets near the port and admire the traditional red fishing huts, or rorbuer, that line the shore. As you walk, you’ll likely notice the calming atmosphere that village life brings.

The highlight of this visit has to be the breathtaking fjords and mountains that the Norwegian coast is so famous for. Branching off of Andfjord, Gullesfjord cuts into the north side of Hinnøya, bordered by pristine mountain ranges. The area is popular among campers, who stay on the campsite or in cabins and fish for cod in the fjord during winter.

From Lødingen, you can join a handful of optional excursions, including a fishing trip with a local, an immersive Sámi experience to learn more about their culture and history, or a visit to Dampskipsbrygga, Lødingen’s former wharf.

  • Sámi Handicrafts, Food, and Culture Spend some time with a local Sámi family and learn about their unique customs that have been passed down through the ages.
  • Fishing with a Local Join the local fisherman for a fishing trip in the waters around Lødingen, perhaps with sea eagles flying overhead.
  • Norway’s Coastal Heritage: Visit Lødingen's Steamship Wharf Take a journey through time at Dampskipsbrygga, Lødingen’s former wharf which has been lovingly restored as an exhibition venue.

DAY 12 : Rørvik

An ancient fishing town

Continuing south, we’ll leave the land of the Polar Night as we cross the Arctic Circle in the early hours of the morning.

The Vikna archipelago is a chain of around 6,000 islands, islets and skerries. The largest of the chain, Inner-Vikna, is where we’ll make our next stop. We aim to dock at the port town of Rørvik around midday, remaining there for about a few hours.

The town and its surrounding areas have a long history, with burial mounds found there that date back to ancient times. The area’s maritime legacy is well-documented across Rørvik’s many museums, particularly The Norwegian Coastal Museum.

Similarly, at SalmoNor visiting centre, you can take a tour of a modern salmon farm and find out more about the Norwegian aquaculture industry that supplies the world with tasty Nordic salmon.

Another major export is cod, and the town even has an annual Cod Festival in March. This species of fish is especially common in the waters of the archipelago during winter, so why not indulge yourself in some fresh cod cakes while here.

Return to the ship in the late afternoon for your penultimate evening on board. Enjoy the ship’s facilities, such as the soothing panoramic sauna or sample some warming local aquavit in the top-deck bar.

  • Time Travel through the Coastal Town of Rørvik Get to know the history of Rørvik on this guided tour across three of the town’s key museums.
  • Nærøya: The island of the Gods Wander in the footsteps of sea kings on the island of Nærøya, home to a remarkable 900-year-old church.
  • Visit a Local Art Museum Delve into a world of art at a captivating private museum, thoughtfully curated over 50 years by local owner Magne Olav Aarsand Brevik.

DAY 13 : Molde

Perfect panoramas

To round off our journey, we’ll visit Molde, the capital and commercial centre of Romsdalen that sits on the southern coast of the Romsdal Peninsula. We’ve stopped at this port many times before on our Coastal Express route, but this time we’ll be making a much longer stop, so you’ll have all the time you need to get your fill of the town.

There are optional activities organised by your Coastal Experience Team that add to your experience of Molde. Accessible nearby on an optional excursion is the Atlantic Road, an icon of the Norwegian coast that often features in Hollywood movies.

If the weather is favourable and time permits, join us on an optional hike up to Varden viewpoint for the best panoramic views of the area. Gaze at the town from above at a height of 402 metres above sea level and admire the 222 snowy peaks across Moldefjord.

If you prefer to stay closer to the ground, you can pop into the Romsdal Museum, one of Norway’s largest folk museums about ten minutes away from the town centre.

Back on the boat, we’ll end our voyage on a high note with an end-of-trip farewell dinner. Take this opportunity to trade photo highlights and experiences with your fellow travellers one last time.

  • The Atlantic Road - A Scenic Bus Tour from Molde Let us drive you along the swooping Atlantic Road, one of the most beautiful routes in the world.

DAY 14 : Bergen

Norway's second largest city

From the south to the north, and back down to the south, reflect on your journey as you watch our approach to our last port of the voyage, Bergen, in the early morning. Say your goodbyes to the crew and disembark the ship, marking the end of your travels with us.

You’ve sailed on The North Cape Express, exploring Norway’s coastal cities and villages all the way to the top of the European continent. During the journey, you’ll have experienced Norway’s varied climate, seen majestic mountains and fjords, and maybe gazed up in awe at the Northern Lights once or several times.

We hope you’ll cherish each of the memories of The North Cape Express that you’ll take home with you. Come sail with us again soon, on another iconic voyage of our spectacular home: the Norwegian coast.
