Our Favorite Dopp Kits Keep Your Toiletries Safe and Contained While Traveling

If you purchase an independently reviewed product or service through a link on our website, Rolling Stone may receive an affiliate commission.

Unless you’re a frequent flier who lives out of those one-quart bags, there’s no reason to throw all of your travel essentials into a plastic baggie when you can keep them organized in a cool dopp kit. These structured carryalls make it easier to stow away your toiletries without worrying about any mid-trek spills — plus, they’re great for keeping your stuff discrete.

What Are the Best Dopp Kits?

Often called wash bags or toiletry bags, the best dopp kits are usually lined for easy washing and feature several compartments for organizing all of your personal care products. Some come in hanging designs that allow you to keep some items separate from others, and there are also options that come in wide-mouth silhouettes so you don’t feel like you’re digging into a black hole just to find your tweezers. Many of these travel bags come in modular and structured shapes, making them easy to squeeze between clothing as you’re packing.

Whether you’re finally ready upgrade your beat-up bag, or you’re shopping for gifts for your favorite traveler, we’ve rounded up some of the coolest dopp kits that — dare we say — look handsome enough to leave out on display. Check out our top picks below.

1. Coach Dopp Kit with Baseball Stitch

Sports fans will dig this sleek calf leather dopp kit from Coach. Its navy and orange striped design and stitching is a subtle nod to baseball, and the interior and exterior pockets provide plenty or storage and organizational space. It measure 10 inches long by 4.75 inches tall by 4.75 inches wide, and is finished with a sturdy zipper.

We dig this structured toiletry bag’s two zippered compartments, which make it easy to separate essentials (say, your skin care products from grooming tools). The combination of smooth cowhide and ballistic nylon gives it a utilitarian and cool touch, and the interior lining is an extra-luxe touch. The carryall measures 5.5 inches tall by 9.75 inches long by four inches deep, and it has a convenient 1.25-inch handle.

This cool dopp kit by British-bred brand Ben Sherman is roomier than it looks, thanks to its dome silhouette and full-length interior zippered pocket. 10. Sturdy Brothers Dopp Kit

This structured dopp kit is made in the U.S. of luxe horween leather that only looks better with age. At 10 inches long by five inches wide by three inches deep, it’s flatter and longer than most other bags, so it’s great if you’re throwing in larger items like an electric shaver. We like that it’s lined with canvas (so it’s easy to clean) and finished with brass hardware.

Full Review

Here at Pack Hacker, we’re always looking for the latest and greatest items to fill backpacks in the most strategic way—either for long term travel or an afternoon at your local coffee shop. So we were pretty pleased to finally take a closer look at the Patagonia Black Hole Packing Cubes.

These little guys are durable, offer some great organization, and are a solid option for one bag travel. We’ve tested out both the small and medium versions for about three months now and we’ve been left with only a couple minor gripes. To find out what those little gripes are—along with everything else you could ever need to know about these little cubes—check out the rest of our review below.

Materials & Aesthetic

Patagonia decided to spice up the packing cube world by gracing us with these bad boys. Seriously though, they’ve selected some incredibly durable materials to create the Black Hole Cubes and the Black Hole® line overall.

They’ve opted to use 100% polyester ripstop (50% solution-dyed) with a TPU-film laminate and a DWR (durable water repellent) finish. YEAH, we know it’s a mouth-full. Basically all you need to know is that this stuff is durable and environmentally-friendly; and we expect it to last a long long time. PLUS, it’s bluesign® approved—meaning Patagonia provides fair wages and safe working conditions for all the employees who are putting these together behind the scenes.

You can always count on Patagonia to create ethical products. Cheers to them!

Patagonia Black Hole Cube YKK Zips

They’ve also added a splash of branding that differs between which color you choose to purchase. Each option has a small stitched Patagonia logo on one side and either their signature fish logo or brand name written out in alignment with the YKK main compartment zipper placement.

Small Patagonia Black Hole Cube

As far as usage goes, we’ve found the small version to be useful as a dopp kit or small organizer. It’s great for keeping either toiletries or tech accessories (charging cords, etc.) tidy. The exterior has daisy chains (a webbed loop system) for attaching the cube to the exterior or interior of packs. It also has two small loops on the interior for securely attaching items that you don’t want bouncing around inside—although this thing is pretty small and we don’t think items will be sloshing around much. When in doubt, utilize these!

Near the horseshoe opening between the daisy chains there is also a large grab handle that we’ve found to be handy when grabbing the cube out of a fully loaded pack. Patagonia notes that this is glove-friendly, so if you happen to be caught in a snow storm, your gloved hand can still utilize this handle! Ta-da!

Patagonia Black Hole Cubes Packed into Travel Backpack

The two main zippers each have a small Paracord zipper pull for quick zip access. The simple zip opening allows ample access to your items, along with easy access to the side mesh pocket. We’ve found this to work

The manufacture tag is located directly at the center bottom of this cube, and we have to admit that we’ve found it to be a bit annoying. Really, it’s a very minor gripe—but of course, we had to go ahead and mention it because that’s just what we do. Pro tip: Just snip that little thing out with some scissors if you don’t want to see it any longer!

The medium version has been a real crowd pleaser here at Pack Hacker. With it’s clamshell design and zippered mesh dividers, we’ve been very pleased with both the organization options and ability to pack in tons of stuff. Typically, we’ve been using it to organize clothing items such as socks and underwear, or thinner items such as t-shirts and tank tops. You can definitely cram a lot of stuff into this thing if you’re really trying to get the job done.

Patagonia Black Hole Cube Daisy Chain & Fabric Detail

Similar to the small version, there are daisy chains for attaching the cube onto or into backpacks and duffels. It also has four interior loops for securely attaching items inside the cube on one side of the mesh dividers. Also similar to the small version is the glove-friendly grab handle—however, the medium has two of these, one on each side which allows for easy grab access either way you load it into your pack. And just in case we aren’t being repetitive enough here, the medium version also has a manufacturing tag that can be a bit annoying. And just like the small version, you can snip this right out if you’re pulling your hair out over it.

While we haven’t tested the large version out, it looks like a large version of the medium—makes sense, right? We expect it to hold up just as well as the other two.

Durability & Testing

As Patagonia puts it, these “super-burly gear cubes” are really just that—super-burly. They’ve helped us get extra organized on the road while giving quick-grab access to whatever we need in our bags at the moment. We’ve also found it helpful to keep one of these filled with your airport essentials, so if you’re stowing your bag underneath the seat in-front of you, you can just utilize the grab handle, pull it out from your pack and keep things neat for the remainder of your flight.

Medium Patagonia Black Hole Cube

One thing we did notice after about three months of use is that our medium cube—in Beryl Green—started to show a couple small stains on it. If you don’t enjoy seeing small visible stains on your gear, we suggest going with the darker colors such as their Dolomite Blue. We got our small version in this color and everything looks like new, even after some heavy use!

One other small gripe we have is the fact that these cubes don’t compress very well. They’re created with ample space and rigid materials so they’re great if you plan to use them all of the time. If you don’t think you’ll want to use them all the time, you might want to look into something more compressible, such as the Eagle Creek Pack-It Specter Cubes .

Usage Timeline

Condition: Excellent

Looking forward to seeing what we can pack into these things!

Really digging the organization options with these.

Still working out great.

Condition: Good

Just a small fabric blemish on the exterior of our medium cube, but everything else looks good as new!

A Dopp kit is a statement of personal style and a convenient item. It contains the tools one uses to transform from a shuffling, scruffy zombie to a well-groomed and bright-eyed man. But not all are made equal. It seems there are leather iterations with long-lasting finishings, waterproof ones with polyester liners, and everything in between.

  • $95.00 at billykirk.com

  • Dimensions: 8.25 by 4.5 by 3.5 inches

Billykirk’s Toiletry Bag is constructed from a water-resistant waxed canvas exterior, water-resistant nylon lining, and a durable, full-grain leather bottom. Not only practical, it’s a polished take on a mundane must-have.

Our tester said it isn’t the biggest, but it was the easiest to pack since the dopp kit itself isn’t all that big. It’s big enough for the essentials, but not much more, and the waxed construction also helps seal in wet stuff.

  • $295.00 at Shinola

Although best known for its watches, Shinola also makes bags, bike locks, extension cords, and office goods. This made-in-the-US option comes in distressed brown leather with a nylon liner. It zips closed, storing the contents in its four interior pockets.

  • Material(s): Cordura ripstop nylon
  • Dimensions: 9.5 by 3.75 by 5.5 inches

Matador made its Flatpak Toiletry Case thoroughly water- and leakproof, which means water won’t soil the electric shavers inside and vice versa, if you’re carrying body wash and shampoo, for example. Folks are always worried whether their liquids will leak onto the clothing inside their suitcase, but Matador calms those concerns with its sealed top closure.

  • Dimensions:9 by 5.9 by 3.9 inches

Level8 sells its handy dopp kit as part of an extensive set, the Organizer Bag Set. It comes with more giant packing cubes, tech towers, and the standard-size dopp kit, which has a mesh zipper pocket lid and large bottom chamber, which could easily fit horizontal bottles, pomade tins, and other accessories, our tester found.

level8

  • $60.00 at monos.com
  • Material(s): Nylon, vegan leather
  • Dimensions: 8.7 by 3.5 by 5.3 inches

Meant to match Monos’s sprawling Metro line, the Toiletry Case comes in two sizes, small or large, and several colors. Our tester liked how the zippers reached almost all the way around and that the large size was tall enough to store upright shampoo bottles. Sure, that makes it harder to pack inside a suitcase, but it’s essential if you’re headed on a long trip.

monos

  • $55.00 at Bellroy
  • Material(s): Recycled polyester
  • Dimensions: 220 by 130 by 70 mm

Designed to complement your Away suitcase, Away’s Hanging Toiletry Bag is a dedicated space for any trip’s grooming essentials. It has two interior zipper pockets for small items you need to access often, and you can personalize it to your liking. Our tester found both compartments offer enough room for your essentials, while a clear zipper pouch makes space for tiny items like tweezers, nail clippers, and such. The best part, though, they said, is the built-in hook, which helps it hang on the back of a bathroom door or from a drawer knob.

How to Pick the Right Dopp Kit

Whether you’re wriggling your kit into a backpack or playing a game of packing Tetris, configuring it inside your carry-on , the right-sized option proves vital. Plus, it must look good, too. It’ll go through a lot — and carry quite a bit — so get one capable of not only carrying the essentials you need to clean, shave, and care for your skin and hair but one that’s able to do so without worry — that it’ll bottom out, its contents will seep through or it isn’t big enough for your travel-sized moisturizers , toothpastes and pomades .

“When it comes to the design of the bag, there are a lot of options. Comes down to your preference. Do you like your bag to hang on a hook or sit on the countertop. Both have limitations if you can’t hang your bag or there’s not a lot of countertop space,” Eric Bandholz, co-founder of Beardbrand , says. “I personally prefer a more open bag with a couple of pockets. Make sure your bag is designed to handle spills as air pressure changes can cause leakage of your products. Another secret is to use Teflon tape between your lid and opening. This will add an extra layer of security.”

It’s important to consider whether your dopp kit can withstand a little wetness. Whether you’re placing it down on a damp counter or a bottle explodes inside it, there’s a high probability it’ll get wet at some point. As such, you need one that’s at least water-resistant.

How to Pack Your Dopp Kit

“I’m a frequent traveler and the most important thing about the dopp kit isn’t the bag, but how you pack it. Specifically, the untold secret to the dopp kit is duplicating your grooming goods. It’s such a simple concept but changes the packaging routine instantly. It’s a small investment that allows you to just grab your stuff and throw it in your bag, without messing up your countertop routine,” Eric Bandholz, co-founder of Beardbrand , says.

As such, he replicates his post-shower while on the road. Most hotels have shampoo and body wash, so don’t pack it. And if you’re only gone for a few days, you probably don’t need a razor. He makes sure to pack one of each of these:

  • Styling Balm or Pomade
  • Scissors (TSA approved)
  • Pocket Comb

patagonia travel dopp kit

How long I’ve been using it: Since 2019; I use this one when I'm traveling with just a carry-on.

Why I like it : The Peak Design bag is water-resistant, making it easy to clean up any spills, and I like that there is a specific compartment for my toothbrush and another for my razor. Inside, there are a ton of small pouches to keep items organized. It’s my go-to for a long weekend trip.

3 products you’ll always find inside :  Cadence Capsules , my  Quip toothbrush , and  contact solution .

How long I’ve been using it: Nine months; it is the one I use when I'm checking a bag.

Why I like it : If I’m traveling for a week or more, I’ll bring Calpak’s clear cosmetic case in the large size. I’ll admit, I was overwhelmed by the size when it first arrived, but it does fit absolutely everything—toiletries, skincare, make-up, even my hairbrush, vitamins, and full-size contact solutions—and it’s nice to have everything in one place. Plus, the clear design means I can double-check that everything’s there at a glance.

How long I’ve been using it: Eight months

Why I like it : This floral toiletry bag is so functional and versatile: it works just as well to organize makeup products and tech accessories as it does toiletry essentials. I recently brought it with me on a weekend trip and I was so impressed with how much I could fit inside this seemingly small bag. I was able to keep my travel-size face wash and moisturizer laying flat inside, along with other must-haves like sunscreen and deodorant. I used the two elastic slip pockets to keep Q-tips and my contact lenses separate from everything else. I also utilized the thin slip pockets on the top of the bag for my go-to lip balm and lip liner. The bag is compact enough that it didn’t take up much room in my weekender bag, but still tall enough that some products can stand up straight inside, like my contact solution and small Vaseline tub. Bonus: It’s made of water-resistant fabric and features a top handle to easily carry it around.

3 products you’ll always find inside : I never travel without my  Supergoop! Unseen sunscreen ,  Vaseline , and a  travel-size CeraVe hydrating face wash .

How long I’ve been using it:  A year and a half

Why I like it:  There’s something about Ceremonia 's colorful "market" pouch that puts me in instant vacation mode. It’s more of a makeup bag than a traditional Dopp kit, with a single main zippered compartment and no internal pockets, but that’s why I love it. Well, that and the fact that it’s also very cute and handmade from upcycled materials. It has a spill-proof lining—ideal for throwing greasy sunscreen bottles and my smudgy Marvis toothpaste in—and can fit about a weekend’s worth of product, which is really all I need and tend to use anyway (even on longer trips). Did I mention it’s also a great beach bag companion?

3 products you’ll always find inside: Victoria Beckham's Future Lash , which gives the prettiest natural lift and rinses off with warm water; the  fragrance oil I wear every day; and extra  slip silk scrunchies , because you never know when one will vanish into the void.

How long I’ve been using it: 10 months

Why I like it:  The space inside surprised me the most. I travel very light, and that applies not only to my carry-on but my toiletries as well. I take only the necessities. The toiletry case comes with five individual pockets that line the interior which is surprisingly roomy; if that’s not enough, then I can always stack my toiletries on top of one another in the center. I’ll often worry about my toiletry bottles becoming loose and leaking onto my clothes, but the one time I did have a mishap my anxiety was quelled once I saw the bag kept it contained.

3 products you’ll always find inside:   Sol de Janiero Brazilian Bum Bum Cream ,  La Roche-Posay Toleriane Double Repair UV SPF Moisturizer, and the  Viktor & Rolf Flowerbomb Parfum in the travel-size bottle.

The Topo Dopp kit has a simple design of one main compartment and a zipper on the front panel. The triangular shape helps everything to stay upright while sitting on the bathroom sink or in transit, without the bulkiness of other options.

With six colors and patterns to choose from, you'll find a perfect match to go with the rest of your luggage. Inside, you'll find a hanging hook as well as nylon latches that can hold slender, rounded items such as toiletry bottles, makeup brushes, and your toothbrush.

Pros -Easy to clean -Multiple storage compartments -4.1 stars

Cons -It's wide and not ideal for those with limited packing space

More Dopp kits we recommend

patagonia travel dopp kit

“I don’t own this bag yet, but I think I need to. I spotted it on Instagram, and it’s the exact type of Dopp kit I’ve been looking for. With toothbrush and razor holders, an interior mesh pocket, a side pocket, and even elastic straps to stick in Chapstick, mascara, or whatever, it feels like a super smart organizing system (especially in contrast to my current method of throwing everything haphazardly into a roomy  Baggu pouch ). I love that it’s water-resistant, and the squared-off shape makes so much sense among my packing cubes. I also think the Terra collection this bag is a part of, which includes earth-toned, rugged-ready bags with tons of straps and compartments, is what might finally get me into  Calpak luggage —this Dopp kit feels like  Patagonia and  Baboon to the Moon  got together and decided to make a toiletry set for women who like a “gear” look but also want to organize their skin care products.”  — Megan Spurrell , senior editor

Inside this neutral-hued pouch you’ll find a large zippered mesh pouch that can fit makeup essentials, dental care items, or skincare products. The top of the Lululemon kit has a zippered pocket that can store flat, slim items (like a comb or toothbrush) for easy access. Made from 100 percent recycled polyester, it's easy to spot-clean on the go.

Pros -Water-repellent fabric -5-liter storage capacity

Cons -Only two compartments

Away has long been one of Traveler editors' go-to brands for luggage and travel accessories. Away is now offering its Large Toiletry bag in a smaller, more compact version. The newer version is still made out of the same water-resistant, durable nylon. Although compact, the bag is fitted with two interior compartments; one of mesh and the other a clear, plastic. This is the ideal toiletry bag for those traveling light and only toting a carry-on.

Pros -Under warranty  -Water-resistant fabric -An additional pocket on the backside for slim items

Cons -Things tend to rattle on the mesh side

patagonia travel dopp kit

This durable Monos Metro toiletry bag comes in nylon and vegan leather; spills and smudges won’t be an issue as both materials are water-resistant. Both are fitted with three internal pockets that can fit your favorite  hand creams ,  lip balms, and a set of Q-tips. The center compartment will easily keep your  skincare routine upright and side by side, no matter the path ahead.

Pros -Choices in color and material -Easy to clean -Scratch-resistant fabric

Cons -Not much room in the interior pockets -Non-flexible fabric, so no wiggle room for items

patagonia travel dopp kit

Pink will definitely be your color when it comes to this Dopp kit from  State Bags . Not only does it incorporate three compartments for you to store everything from medicine to makeup, but it also has a collapsible hanger that adds to the locations where it can be stored.

Pros -Detachable interior pouch -Very roomy -Has a handle for easy carrying

Cons -The hanger is small so there may be racks it won't be able to hang from

patagonia travel dopp kit

Dagne Dover's Mila toiletry organizer takes the Dopp kit to another level with a vertical design that gives you a bird's-eye view of your essentials. The clever design of this recycled polyester zip case makes it easy to see everything at once, so there’s no digging around for what you need. The case comes with a removable padded divider to keep items upright and protected and has convenient interior elastic pockets. Aside from the main compartment, a zippered mesh pocket on the lid is perfect for storing contact lenses, tweezers, medicine, and other small necessities.

Pros -With the divider there are over five compartments to place items -Easy to clean -Upright design

Cons -Bulky

A sleek design makes Lojel's  travel case perfect for minimalists. The case—which comes in gray or black—is made from water-repellent polyester and has a leak-proof base. Budget friendly and durable, this is the ideal case for travel pros only carrying the essentials, or everything you might need for a weekend trip. Four interior pockets will help keep you organized, too.

Pros -Lightweight  -Has a handle for carrying and hanging -Four pockets

Cons -The large shape (11.8" × 7.3" × 4.2") isn't quite carry-on friendly

patagonia travel dopp kit

The  Go Pouch bag set from Baggu brings a fun and playful design to the basic travel kit. These roomy recycled nylon pouches fit much more than you'd expect, creating an easy way to organize toiletries (or electronics, or accessories) while traveling. Great for those  traveling with kids , the best part of these lightweight and packable cases is that they’re machine washable—no need to worry about spills.

Pros -Lightweight and foldable -Machine washable -Multi-purpose uses

Cons -No structure, so certain items can create a bulkiness to the bag -Not water-resistant, so spills can leak through

The Strategist Guide to Shopping at Patagonia

Jump to section

Base layers.

Anyone who has shopped at a retailer with few physical storefronts knows it can be hard to figure out where to begin. There are lots of options that all seem as worthy as the next, but the reality is that products from any given brand are not all created equal. When you shop as regularly as we do, you learn that many brands just do some things better than they do other things. With an expansive inventory of hard-wearing, adventure-minded gear, Patagonia is one of those brands. To help you find the best jackets, fleece pullovers, windbreakers, base layers, travel bags, and more, we’ve compiled all the products that our writers and editors — plus designers , CEOs , chefs , and, of course, Chris Black — have recommended.

Patagonia Black Hole 40L Duffel Bag

We’re longtime fans of Patagonia’s Black Hole collection — which includes duffels, totes, hip packs, and more. In fact, we’ve been so impressed by the line’s sturdiness and functionality that we’ve recommended no less than nine Black Hole bags of varying shapes and sizes over the years — all of which you’ll find here.

Recently, the Black Hole Duffels went through a rebranding of sorts: The 40L, 55L, 70L, and 100L now feature a fully recycled matte material, replacing the shinier fabric that we’ve written about before. Even with the updated material, the form and function stay largely the same — including that of this burly 40-liter duffel, which is our pick for the best weekender bag . With a water-repellent and abrasion-resistant coating, it’s made for off-grid adventures, and at under three pounds, it’s unassumingly lightweight while letting you pack heavy. If you plan to hike with your duffel, you can replace the cushioned sling strap with padded backpack straps, which is former associate editor Louis Cheslaw’s favorite way to carry his Black Hole. And as seen in our dad edition of the Strategist Haul , editor Maxine Builder’s longtime “Patagonia fanboy” father can’t live without his Black Hole duffels. “He can run through an airport wearing it like a backpack, easily throw it into the overhead compartment of a plane as a carry-on, and still bring a week’s worth of clothes,” Builder says.

Patagonia Black Hole Mini MLC 30L

Another favorite from the Black Hole collection is the Mini MLC, a smaller model with a 30-liter pack capacity, which Cheslaw named his best purchase of 2021 . He calls it his “secret second suitcase” because it’s small enough to qualify as an airline personal item , while freeing up space from his rolling luggage . “I still feel like I’m cheating the system whenever I get it into the cabin,” Cheslaw told us. “Just like a suitcase, the bag lies flat on the floor when you pack it with a deep and structured interior.”

Patagonia Black Hole 25L Daypack

Our senior editor Simone Kitchens is also a Patagonia Black Hole fan, but instead of a duffel, she prefers the brand’s 25-liter day pack . She says the backpack has several perfectly sized compartments for things like “chargers and night guards and passports and AirPods,” while the top zipper closure makes for easy access to the interior.

Patagonia Ultralight Black Hole Tote Pack

There’s even a Black Hole bag that’s beloved by the art world : the Ultralight pack. Strategist contributor Molly Dektar first noticed the bag on a colleague in 2018, who told her that he had first spotted it on artist Dena Yago . Dektar then saw the backpack several more times at Art Basel in 2021, and again in 2022 — and knew she was onto something. After she bought one for herself, Dektar understood the appeal for artists (and anyone) on the go: “It can be carried as either a tote or a backpack, depending on the situation, and it folds into its own internal pocket, for easy storage,” she told us.

Patagonia Black Hole Cube

Also useful for people on the move: Patagonia’s Black Hole packing cubes . While not technically a Dopp kit , the cubes are an ideal solution for storing larger toiletries. Matt Kays, a senior vice president at PR Consulting, has two: He uses one as a Dopp kit and the other as a “wet bag” post-beach. Meanwhile, Peter Hunsinger, co-founder of sock brand Kane 11 , appreciates that this packing cube is roomy enough to hold a pair of shoes on one side and other essentials, such as grooming products and a travel blow dryer, can be stored opposite. A top handle and daisy chain mean you can secure it inside a large bag or hang it from a hook.

Patagonia Black Hole Cube 3L

For a more compact toiletry kit, Builder likes these three-liter packing cubes for her makeup and the six-liter for bulkier travel items like shower essentials, face wipes , and her toothbrush . She says the six-liter packing-cube design is ideal because, like the ten-liter option above, it can be unzipped to lay flat and completely open.

Patagonia Black Hole Waist Pack 5L

The Black Hole collection also includes waist bags — and we named this sturdy five-liter the top option for travel in our guide to the best fanny packs . Recommended to us by Charlotte Stone, who runs an eponymous shoe label , this five-liter pack has all the crowd-pleasing features as the rest of the Black Hole line — plus hands-free functionality. It’s “ridiculously functional,” says Stone, who keeps training treats in it on daily walks with her two dogs and even tethers their leashes to the bag’s webbing straps.

Patagonia Ultralight Black Hole Mini Hip Pack

Patagonia also makes a Black Hole crossbody , which Sam Sanders counted as one of his favorite things , thanks to its just-big-enough size for his wallet, phone charger, some gum, chapstick , and sunglasses. “It fits ergonomically on my body, and it’s cute,” Sanders told us. “I get compliments on this thing — I never got compliments on my cell phone and thick-ass wallet poking in my back pocket.”

Patagonia Dirt Roamer Waist Pack

Not all our favorite Patagonia bags are from the Black Hole collection. There’s the Dirt Roamer Waist Pack, which Strategist contributor Chris Black recommends should you need a practical and cool way to carry your phone during “big-boy weekend runs .” It has tons of storage for gels, water, or a banana, and the three-pocket design “distributes weight evenly so you aren’t jogging lopsided,” says Black.

Patagonia Guidewater Backpack 29L

If you’re looking for a backpack, Catherine Bruhwiler , Canada’s first professional female surfer , tipped us off about this rugged Guidewater pack. She loves that the all-day bag , which is completely submersible and has rust-resistant zippers, can handle the elements. “I can go straight from work at the surf shop with my laptop to the boat and on a remote beach adventure or an evening salmon fish,” Bruhwiler says.

Patagonia Atom Tote Pack 20L

And for kids, try Patagonia’s Atom Tote Pack. While it’s not technically a kids bag, Strategist contributor Youngna Park says her elementary-age kids find the mid-size backpack very comfortable to carry. It has enough space to hold folders, lunch, and snacks thanks to a removable padded laptop sleeve, plus interior and exterior pockets to secure smaller items.

Patagonia Baggies Shorts

If it feels like Patagonia Baggies are everywhere that’s because … well, they are. The shorts have become something of a cult item from the brand and are a favorite of current and former Strategist writers and editors alike (and probably of more than a few people you know). When we asked stylish men about the best men’s shorts, the Baggies were the leading nylon option. With a quick-drying mesh liner and pockets that are made to “drain and dry,” the brand says they’re “designed for use in and out of the water.” They’re also the best overall pick in our roundup of swim trunks , in part because of their fashion clout. They “have become something of a summer staple,” says image consultant Patrick Kenger . “They’re the perfect length, come in multiple color options, and it’s an attractive price point.” Black is also a fan and considers his pair one of the best summer basics, especially for their deep pockets that easily hold essentials. Baggies come in several colors and patterns, as well as five- and seven-inch inseams.

Patagonia Baggies

Baggies are also available in a women’s cut, which Builder and Strategist senior editor Winnie Yang both praised for being all-around shorts they can throw on for lounging, walking the beach, and running errands. Builder prefers the shorter Baggies and sizes up “so they aren’t too short,” while Yang says she prefers the five-inch inseam for a more modest fit .

Patagonia Men's Nano Air Jacket

When it comes to Patagonia outerwear, there are lots of options to choose from — and some styles we feel more passionately about than others. “I will die for (or in ) my Patagonia Nano Air Jacket,” Strategist writer Jeremy Rellosa says. “It’s the most versatile outdoor jacket I own. I can wear it for easy hikes in cool weather, or use it as my main insulator or heavy layer on winter days around town. And it’s just downright cozy.” An experienced backpacker and hiker , Rellosa has tested it against similar jackets from other brands, including the Arc’teryx Atom LT , the Mountain Hardwear Kor Strata , and the North Face Ventrix , but the Nano Air remains his favorite — so much so that he owns two: one for everyday and the other for very special climbs.

Patagonia Men's Down Sweater Jacket

Builder owns a very similar packable men’s puffer to this Down Sweater Jacket. “I sort of look like the Michelin Man when I put it on, maybe because it’s the men’s version. (If you want a slim fit, there’s a women’s version, too.) But man, it’s warm,” Builder says. “It’s also super-lightweight because it’s down, so I never really overheat while wearing it.” Although it’s not waterproof, Builder says it’s comfortable and lightweight enough to layer under her navy Snowbelle or black Torrentshell .

Patagonia Houdini Full-Zip Jacket - Men's

If you’re a runner, take note from Camilla Cho, SVP of e-commerce at Vox Media, who owns two of these Houdini Jackets and has worn them for many runs and races. “The thing is so light you forget you have it on,” Cho says. “It’s perfect for exercising outdoors when it’s a bit breezy and great for traveling , since you can stuff the whole thing into the side pocket so it becomes a little pouch that you can throw into a bag.” David Bruno, a cyclist and owner of Départ Wine in Great Barrington, Massachusetts, even keeps this shell with him at all times in case the weather changes unexpectedly.

Patagonia Micro Puff Jacket

For the bike commuters out there: Patagonia’s hooded Micro Puff Jacket might be the outer layer you’ve been searching for. Mike Radenbaugh, co-founder and CEO of electric bike company Rad Power Bikes , recommends the jacket because it’s warm and windproof, and the cuffs have elastic that keeps water and wind out. This insulation is made of 100 percent recycled polyester, and according to the brand, it’s the best warmth-to-weight ratio of any jacket.

Patagonia Women's Triolet Jacket

When we consulted with a group of cool people — including professional skiers, shop owners, and ski patrollers — about the best ski-jacket options, the Patagonia Triolet Shell earned the top overall spot. Jackie Kearney, a ski patroller at Lake Tahoe’s Kirkwood Resort , says many of her colleagues wear it because “it’s sturdy and waterproof” and because of technical features like “more pockets and pit zips, which are nice to get some more ventilation.” And when celebrity stylist Mac Huelster temporarily moved to the West Coast, he replaced his snow jacket with the lighter Triolet, which he says is ideal for layering.

Patagonia Bivy Down Vest

Also ideal for layering: this reversible vest, which Pressed Juicery CEO Hayden Slater says is one of his favorite purchases of all time. “Not only is it down and crazy warm, but it’s also light and easy to travel with. Sometimes, I’ll even bring it places to use as a pillow ,” he told us.

Patagonia Women's Nano Puff Parka

Our writer Arielle Avila thrifted this Nano Puff Parka before moving to New York City and says its insulation was effective during her first winter . “It’s incredibly warm, so I’d wear it by itself, but it’s super-lightweight, so I was able to layer it underneath my less substantial jackets,” she says. And if she gets too warm, Avila says she can easily pack it into a tote for storage. “I can’t stress how nice it is to have a puffer that doesn’t take up lots of closet space,” she says.

Patagonia Women's Tres 3-in-1 Parka

Recycled materials are an essential part of Patagonia’s offerings, so it’s no surprise that this coat — made from 100 percent recycled polyester derived from plastic bottles — was named our top sustainable parka for women . Dr. Susan Sokolowski, founding director of the University of Oregon’s sports products design program, also notes that this parka’s three-in-one design — which functions as a puffer jacket, raincoat, and waterproof parka — can help buyers avoid shopping for multiple winter coats.

Patagonia Men's SnowDrifter Bibs

And for outdoor expeditions in wintry conditions (or just sledding with your kids): snow pants . Ty Morrison-Heath , an outdoor marketer and former Big Sky ski patroller, told us he wears these SnowDrifter Bibs when he skins uphill. The waterproof, breathable membrane prevents him from sweating out his base layer, plus the pants keep him warm and dry for the chillier descent. He says the large “kangaroo pocket” is ideal for stashing energy gels, and that the elasticized cuffs keep them in place around his ski and snowboard boots.

Patagonia Classic Retro-X Fleece Jacket - Men's

From city streets to more rustic landscapes, this fleece jacket is popular among both celebrities and Strategist staffers. Actor Max Greenfield owns the Classic Retro-X, which he bought for a trip to Montana — and, he says, hasn’t taken it off since. “It just insulates you in a way you’re like, I feel safe in this jacket ,” Greenfield says. Meanwhile, Builder has had this top since 2009, and says that “the actual stitching has stayed intact, and the zippers work great.” She calls her beige and kelly-green number “the perfect autumn coat, for when you’re hot in the sun, but it’s still a brisk 50 degrees outside.”

Patagonia Men’s Classic Synchilla Fleece Jacket

Among the Silicon Valley tech set, this double-sided fleece reigns status-item supreme, according to associate Jeremy Banon. He says the full-zip jacket is so ubiquitous that he likens it to “the North Face of San Francisco,” especially when it comes in “neutral tones.”

Patagonia Women's Lightweight Synchilla Snap-T Fleece Pullover

If you prefer a snap front to a zip, try this pullover, which our junior writer Brenley Goertzen received for Christmas. Goertzen, who lives in Minnesota, says the fleece has served as a soft and toasty layer under her winter parka for the past few years, and that its four-snap front closure and collar keep her neck extra warm on below-zero nights.

Patagonia Women's Capilene Midweight Crew

For those searching for technical base layers that work in a range of conditions, look no further than Patagonia’s Capilene line. The collection, which is made from recycled polyester, offers a range of men’s and women’s tops and bottoms in various weights, including Thermal Weight, Midweight, and Cool, all of which can handle extreme temperature variations.

The Capilene Midweight Crew and Bottoms were named our best synthetic option in our roundup of long underwear for women . Thanks to their weight, these are suitable for a range of winter activities; the flatlock seams offer chafe-free comfort, and there’s enough stretch to the fabric for high-intensity movements. When designer Carolyn Yim isn’t wearing the merino leggings she designs for Ply–Knits , she swears by the Capilene base-layer bottoms. She also appreciates the brand’s commitment to responsible sourcing, and points out that these thermals are made from 92 percent recycled PET bottles, plus they can be donated to Patagonia’s Common Threads program, which will recycle them into a new garment. Primary Essentials owner Lauren Snyder also approves: “I like Patagonia thermals because they really do work, and they last. I still have pairs that I’ve had for years.”

Patagonia Women's Long-Sleeved Capilene Cool Daily Graphic Shirt

Patagonia’s Capilene Cool Daily tops are ideal for warm or wet weather because the material is lightweight and quick-drying. The Capilene tees are Builder’s go-tos for most outdoor activities: “The long-sleeved is great for sailing and kayaking, because it’s not too heavy and also protects from the sun,” she says. “And then [the short-sleeved] is just a great sweat-wicking shirt for hikes.” Capilene is also known for its anti-odor technology, which keeps you feeling cooler and fresher for longer.

Patagonia Women's All Seasons Hemp Canvas Bib Overalls

A fan of Patagonia’s Hemp Canvas workwear line, Yang owns these Bib Overalls in off-white. Though her off-white pair is currently unavailable, you can still get the sturdy bottoms, which have two buttons on each side of the hip for easy on and off, in green or black.

Patagonia Women's Iron Forge Hemp Canvas Barn Coat

Yang also has the insulated and heavy-duty Barn Coat, which she’s owned since 2018. According to the brand , this topper is more durable than conventional cotton duck canvas and designed for all types of cold-weather tasks .

Patagonia Baby Nano Puff Jacket

To bundle up your little ones, Patagonia offers a wide range of styles for children . Yang has tried a number of other brands for her kids but says Patagonia’s outerwear is noticeably better made and longer lasting. She’s bought plenty of styles — which you’ll find below — for her kids, and adds that this Nano Puff gets the most wear of all. The quilted pattern offers lightweight insulation, so it isn’t as heavy as other Patagonia kids’ jackets, but it still does an excellent job at keeping small arms warm.

Patagonia Infant Hi-Loft Down Sweater Bunting

Yang uses this Hi-Loft Down snowsuit, which is insulated with 700-fill-power down, on colder days (freezing or below) and when it’s snowing. Though the outer shell isn’t completely waterproof, she told us her son has played in the snow while wearing the bunting, and it’s kept him dry and toasty. It also makes bundling kids up easier: “My youngest hates getting dressed or changed, so if we can just drop him into an all-in-one outer layer, that cuts down on the time we spend struggling to wrestle him into his clothes,” says Yang.

Patagonia Baby Hi-Loft Down Sweater Hoody

Insulated with the same 700-fill-power down as the Hi-Loft Bunting above, this full-zip jacket dries readily even if it’s raining or snowing heavily. Yang, who also owns this style, says you can feel the quality “in the zippers and see it in the stitching for the baffles and seams.” The sizing accommodates a wide age range, plus it’s available in many fun colors, including pink, purple, and several shades of blue.

Patagonia Baby Reversible Tribbles Hoody

While this coat is reversible, Yang prefers to keep the fleece-lined side on the inside for added warmth. And thanks to a windproof outer shell, it’s ideal for any kind of cold weather . Other notable features include a removable hood that snaps closed and elastic cuffs that keep chilly air out. (And if you’re concerned about the price, Yang says Patagonia also has good resale value, and she likes that you can send or take in any used Patagonia for credit toward new items.)

What Is a Dopp Kit and How Is it Different From a Toiletry Bag?

  • toiletry bags
  • Travel Toiletries

Dopp kit is a bit of jargon that may have rung a bell in your head long ago, but whose meaning has probably slipped your mind since then. No longer in vogue, even expert groomers find it difficult to answer what is a Dopp kit.

But the Dopp kit meaning isn't quite riddle-of-the-sphinx territory. It's simply that, like the term "hoover" to describe a vacuum cleaner, Dopp kits have become old-fashioned while their modern counterparts have taken over.

What is a Dopp Kit?

Simply put, a Dopp kit is a small bag for storing toiletries.

How is it different from a regular toiletry bag, you might ask? Brace yourself for an underwhelming answer:

In fact, the terms "Dopp kit" and "toiletry bag" are used interchangeably. The main difference is that “Dopp kit” is used almost exclusively in the U.S. and rarely, if at all.

A Brief History of Dopp Kits

Still wondering, what is a Dopp kit?

We get it — it sounds like it could be some sort of gadget for playing golf or tennis!

But we promise you, it's a totally valid substitute for the term "toiletry bag," with an interesting history to boot.

Dopp kits were named after Charles Doppelt, a leather craftsman from Germany who founded the company that made them in 1926.

Before then, the U.S. Military issued toiletry kits to soldiers who fought in World War I. These kits helped service members keep their grooming essentials organized ... to an extent.

As it turned out, most of these toiletry organizers were roll kits made of canvas. They had loose-fitting pockets for items like lather brushes and small tobacco cans — zippers not included.

The idea was to roll the kit once the grooming items were "secured" in their pockets or liners and to tie it with a string.

As a result, service members traveled with the bare minimum of toiletries, including a toothbrush, toothpaste, hair comb, and nail clippers.

Dopp Kits: From Military Toiletry Bag to All-Purpose Travel Kit

The true Dopp kit meaning took shape during World War II, as more service members ditched their flimsy roll kits and opted for a "no-roll flat case" instead.

Charles Doppelt invariably had a hand in this new development by designing the leather toilet case that "opens wide ... closes snug and flat, taking up little space in your luggage," to quote a  vintage ad.

But calling it a toilet case was too crass for the masses, so many started calling it a Dopp kit, period.

Over time, it grew in popularity thanks to its lightweight and water-resistant construction, making it a go-to accessory for any traveler. By the '50s and '60s, Americans started using it to store cosmetics, shaving essentials, and other personal hygiene items.

The End of the Dopp Brand

Now that we know the Dopp kit meaning and how popular these toiletry bags were back in the day, what led to the end of the Dopp brand?

Well, historical records are scarce on this topic, but when Samsonite bought Doppelt's company in the early 1970s, it decided not to retain the brand name.

Nevertheless, Samsonite filed a trademark for "Dopp" on April 3rd, 1980. The trademark included the following class of goods: "toilet cases sold empty, briefcases, briefcase type portfolios, sample and catalog cases sold empty, luggage identification tags, and traveling bags," according to Wikipedia.

But in 2013, Samsonite failed to submit a Declaration of Continued Use with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), which would have recorded its use of the trademark for five consecutive years as required by federal law.

When the trademark was canceled by default, Buxton Acquisition Co. stepped in and has owned the trademark ever since.

What is a Dopp Kit if Not a Toiletry Bag?

So, what is a Dopp kit?

It's not only an old-school accessory that remains relevant today but also one of the best ways to keep all of your grooming essentials well-organized.

Although the term "Dopp kit" is becoming obsolete, it's perfectly fine to call it that when referring to a toiletry bag. It's just that some people won't catch the Dopp kit meaning without a little background info.

Just remember: When compared to a roll kit, Dopp kits are more concerned with size, structure, and function. The same can be said about the best toiletry organizers currently on the market.

The Dopp Recap and Timeline

Here's a quick recap and timeline of the iconic Dopp kit:

What To Use Your Dopp Kit For The Next Time You Travel

P acking a bunch of cords and chargers is just part of going out of town these days. We have endless devices -- from phones and tablets to laptops, headphones, fitness trackers, and then ... backup chargers. And, of course, each device usually comes with its own set of charging cords. Then, you can't forget packing adaptors for when you plan to travel to countries that require different voltages. It's a lot to keep track of.

How can you ensure that you not only bring everything that might be needed to your destination, but also manage to pack it all up on the day of your return? If you've done it once, you'll  never want to forget your charger in a hotel room again . Is it even possible to avoid a big tangle of chargers  in your carry-on? The solution: Packing all of your cords and chargers in a Dopp kit. Let's look at what a Dopp kit is and how using one can make your traveling life so much easier. We'll get your electronics organized and keep you from losing that awesome, extra-long USB-C cord that you've had to replace several times already.

Read more: The Complete Guide To Packing Light

What Is A Dopp Kit?

You may have heard of a Dopp kit before -- it's often used as an interchangeable term for a toiletry bag. (The item was named after Charles Doppelt, a German craftsman who started making them in the early 20th century.) To create an electronic version of a Dopp kit, it's a good idea to find a bag that zips closed and is equipped with many pockets and pouches to keep things organized. Plus, a bag with mesh in the interior can allow you to see what's inside without unzipping each and every pocket. It also wouldn't hurt to keep a bunch of twist ties handy in order to keep your cords neatly wrapped.

You can even label each section with a piece of scotch tape, or use a color-coded system to keep things straight. For instance, a blue label for laptop chargers, red for phone chargers, yellow for tablet accessories, and so on. If you want to be extra organized, get a pack of tiny colored rubber bands and wrap a color that matches the section around each cord. A few minutes of extra preparation now means more organization (and faster repacking) later.

What Should You Have In Your Dopp Kit?

So what should actually go in your electronics Dopp kit? There are the usual suspects, of course, but so many of us have so many devices that it's worth grouping them. We recommend having one section for all your USB cords and keeping your USB-C in a separate section so you don't have to fuss with searching for the right cords in the middle of the night.

The next grouping should be headphones and their accompanying charger cords and necessary plugs. Phone accessories should be in their own section. Another section can be dedicated to your fitness tracker, and another for music devices, or tablets. Have yet another section for backup chargers and their charging cords, which can be organized together.

Finally, you can have an international section with the different adaptors you'll need in different countries. We recommend using one adaptor that offers multiple countries' voltages in a single unit to save on space if you travel overseas often. If you have the room, you can even pack a powerstrip to save you from those hotels that only have one or two outlets behind impossible-to-move beds or side tables.

Touring the Top 10 Moscow Metro Stations

By Claudia Looi 2 Comments

Komsomolskaya metro station

Komsomolskaya metro station looks like a museum. It has vaulted ceilings and baroque decor.

Hidden underground, in the heart of Moscow, are historical and architectural treasures of Russia. These are Soviet-era creations – the metro stations of Moscow.

Our guide Maria introduced these elaborate metro stations as “the palaces for the people.” Built between 1937 and 1955, each station holds its own history and stories. Stalin had the idea of building beautiful underground spaces that the masses could enjoy. They would look like museums, art centers, concert halls, palaces and churches. Each would have a different theme. None would be alike.

The two-hour private tour was with a former Intourist tour guide named Maria. Maria lived in Moscow all her life and through the communist era of 60s to 90s. She has been a tour guide for more than 30 years. Being in her 60s, she moved rather quickly for her age. We traveled and crammed with Maria and other Muscovites on the metro to visit 10 different metro stations.

Moscow subways are very clean

To Maria, every street, metro and building told a story. I couldn’t keep up with her stories. I don’t remember most of what she said because I was just thrilled being in Moscow.   Added to that, she spilled out so many Russian words and names, which to one who can’t read Cyrillic, sounded so foreign and could be easily forgotten.

The metro tour was the first part of our all day tour of Moscow with Maria. Here are the stations we visited:

1. Komsomolskaya Metro Station  is the most beautiful of them all. Painted yellow and decorated with chandeliers, gold leaves and semi precious stones, the station looks like a stately museum. And possibly decorated like a palace. I saw Komsomolskaya first, before the rest of the stations upon arrival in Moscow by train from St. Petersburg.

2. Revolution Square Metro Station (Ploshchad Revolyutsii) has marble arches and 72 bronze sculptures designed by Alexey Dushkin. The marble arches are flanked by the bronze sculptures. If you look closely you will see passersby touching the bronze dog's nose. Legend has it that good luck comes to those who touch the dog's nose.

3. Arbatskaya Metro Station served as a shelter during the Soviet-era. It is one of the largest and the deepest metro stations in Moscow.

4. Biblioteka Imeni Lenina Metro Station was built in 1935 and named after the Russian State Library. It is located near the library and has a big mosaic portrait of Lenin and yellow ceramic tiles on the track walls.

5. Kievskaya Metro Station was one of the first to be completed in Moscow. Named after the capital city of Ukraine by Kiev-born, Nikita Khruschev, Stalin's successor.

7. Kurskaya Metro Station was one of the first few to be built in Moscow in 1938. It has ceiling panels and artwork showing Soviet leadership, Soviet lifestyle and political power. It has a dome with patriotic slogans decorated with red stars representing the Soviet's World War II Hall of Fame. Kurskaya Metro Station is a must-visit station in Moscow.
