'We Leave Our Egos At The Door': How Nothing But Thieves Harnessed The Light On 'Dead Club City'

Live Review: Paul McCartney @ Heritage Bank Stadium, Gold Coast

The night was not just a concert but a journey through the evolution of modern music – McCartney as the consummate guide.

More Paul McCartney

As the sun dipped below the horizon on the Gold Coast, a multigenerational sea of 30,000 Sir Paul McCartney fans converged at Heritage Bank Stadium on the Gold Coast as the music legend brought his Got Back tour to a resounding final with a performance that was nothing short of spectacular.

At 81 years young, the Beatles legend is a testament to the enduring spirit of rock 'n' roll. His three-hour set was a masterclass that spanned the breadth of his storied six-decade career, from the nascent days of the Quarrymen to his latest solo ventures.

His showmanship, as compelling as the timeless anthems he's given the world, illuminated the stage as he kicked off the show with a spirited rendition of Can't Buy Me Love, the stadium erupting with thousands of voices joining in – a choir of young and old – proving that some melodies are universal.

The crowd was an eclectic mosaic, a mix that spanned from those who had lived through Beatlemania to the youths discovering the magic of Love Me Do for the first time. It’s a testament to McCartney's enduring influence that the audience didn't skew to just one age group; instead, it was a gathering that transcended generations, all there for the love of music that has soundtracked more than half a century.

Each song was a chapter in a live anthology of his life's work, with McCartney’s fingers dancing across the keys of the grand piano or strumming his guitar with the ease of a man who has spent a lifetime doing just that. The night was not just a concert but a journey through the evolution of modern music – McCartney as the consummate guide.

Addressing the hyped crowd after performing Wings’ 1974 hit Junior's Farm, McCartney took a moment to take in the sea of adoring fans, saying: “This is the last night of our Australian tour so we're gonna have some fun tonight. We’ve got some old songs, some new songs, and some in inbetweeners.

“This one’s an inbetweener,” he added before launching into Wings hit Letting Go from their 1975 album Venus and Mars.

Later, as the chords of the Wings classic Let Me Roll It transitioned into an unexpected riff from Jimi Hendrix's Foxy Lady , McCartney recounted the memorable evening when Hendrix masterfully performed a live rendition of Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band just hours after the album's release.

“He paid us one of the greatest tributes we've ever been paid, because we'd released Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club on the Friday night — you used to release your records on a Friday — and two days later on a Sunday, he had learned it and he opened the show with it,” he explained, adding, “And it was fantastic. He did an incredible version of it.”

Halfway through the set, the Liverpool legend took a moment to banter with members of the crowd who had crafted posters for the occasion.

“All my money I spent on you”, McCartney read from one fan’s sign, before reading aloud another that said, “Can you play drums on Penny Lan e?”

“No. Another time,” McCartney laughed.

A third sign read: “Can you sign my bum?”, to which McCartney cheekily quipped back, “Come on then, let’s have a look at it!”

Effortlessly transitioning between playful chatter and deep reflections, a particularly touching moment arose when McCartney introduced his rendition of Blackbird, during which he shared the stirring origins of the song from the Beatles' iconic 1968 self-titled album.

“Having written that song, it was it was originally like a civil rights thing,” McCartney told the crowd. “Because around the time, when I wrote it, I was hearing a lot about the situation in the southern states in America, where there was a lot of segregation. And so I wanted to write a song that if it ever reached, the people going through all of that, it might just give them a little bit of hope.”

He continued, “And it was funny, actually, because we were down in the southern states, and we're playing Jacksonville. And the promoter said towards sort of caution, he said the audience, is gonna be segregated. So you've got the black people here, the white people, and we said, ‘No, we don't go to play to that.’”

“And he said, ‘Well, that's the way we do it down here’, but and we stuck to our guns. And in the end, because there's a bit of money involved, they decided they were desegregated. So everyone got to sit together. That’s something I'm really proud of.”

He added, “Years later, I met one of the girls who had gone to the concert, and she said, ‘It was amazing because I've never sat with white people before, and we're all just Beatles fans. We're all just screaming into the holes. So it was lovely, you know?”

The evening was enriched with McCartney's heartfelt tributes, including a tender dedication of Here Today to his late friend and fellow Beatle , John Lennon , as well as playing the ukulele given to him by George Harrison.

“This next song, because when you’re kids in Liverpool, one thing you couldn't really say to each other was ‘I love you’”,  McCartney said ahead of performing Here Today from his 1982 solo album Tug of War that was written following Lennon’s tragic 1980 murder.

“It just wasn't done, because you spent half the time just trying to be tough. You never got to say ‘I love you’. So I wrote this song after my friend John died. Let's hear it for John,” McCartney said as the crowd roared with thunderous applause before hushing to the point you could hear a pin drop as the star performed the heartfelt track.

The performance of Live And Let Die was a spectacle of sensory overload, with the band tearing through the number against a backdrop of dazzling pyrotechnics, fireworks, and laser lights, all pulsating to the rhythm of the strobes.

As the set neared its conclusion, the Beatles icon, seated at his grand piano, took a moment to dedicate Hey Jude to Hollywood actor Jude Law, who was among the adoring Gold Coast audience. Law, who is on the Gold Coast for a film shoot, was visibly moved, joining in with the chorus in a moment of pure, unscripted delight.

Ever the consummate showman, McCartney returned to the stage for an encore that underscored his legendary status. With the crowd's cheers still echoing in the stadium, the concert reached its zenith with a virtual duet with an on-screen John Lennon for I’ve Got A Feeling.

As McCartney closed with the Abbey Road medley, it was clear that the evening was more than just a concert; it was a celebration of a lifetime in music, a journey through the ages with one of the world's most beloved artists.

As the final note of The End resonated through the stadium, McCartney had the crowd erupting in cheers as he hinted at a return to the land Down Under.

“See you next time!”

Paul McCartney Got Back Tour 2023

Paul McCartney will bring his acclaimed Got Back Tour to the Gold Coast this November!

The Gold Coast will welcome the legendary music icon for a performance at Heritage Bank Stadium on 4 November 2023. This tour will see McCartney return for his first live performances in Australia in six years. McCartney was last in Australia in December 2017 (which saw him win a Helpmann Award for Best International Contemporary Concert in 2018 beating the likes of Ed Sheeran), wowing audiences nationwide with a near three-hour show, the Sydney Morning Herald reporting, “ If the greatest songs elicit an emotional response too powerful to properly explain, it’s safe to say no review of Paul McCartney’s tour will quite do it justice.”

McCartney launched the Got Back tour in February 2022, completing 16 huge shows across the US before performing what the British Times newspaper described as the “ best gig ever ” with his history-making set at Glastonbury in June 2022. Fans and critics who attended the Got Back dates were unanimous in their praise.

Irrefutably one of the most successful sing-songwriters and performers of all time, McCartney is behind the most beloved catalogue in music. Make no mistake – this is a once-in-a-lifetime event. Paul McCartney’s Got Back Australian Tour is not to be missed! Act quickly to secure your tickets.

Hints and tips for improving your chances of getting Paul McCartney tickets

Make sure you have a my ticketmaster account.

Get the basics covered before tickets go on sale by logging in and checking your Ticketmaster account ahead of time. If you don’t have a Ticketmaster Account then make sure you sign up in advance –  Ticketmaster.com.au .

Sign into your My Ticketmaster account ahead of time

Remember to triple check your passwords, account information, and billing information are all filled in correctly in advance, that way you’re not facing any last-minute account updates when trying to process your order.

Keep your options open with ‘Best Available’

Save time by searching “Best Available,” which scans all sections fast – it’s quicker than searching sections one at a time.

Keep an eye on the clock

There will be a time limit applied to all transactions as you are progressed through the ticket purchasing stages. Remember to keep an eye on the timer on your screen and move through the processing pages as quickly as possible (this is even easier when you’ve completed the account set-up stage we mentioned above).

Don’t refresh your screen

Stick to one window while you’re in the  Waiting Room  and when you’re being pushed through  the Smart Queue  and always resist the urge to refresh.

Hitting the refresh button means you’ll lose your place in the queue and, as frustrating as it can get, patience is the only way to win this game. Ticketmaster is equipped with sophisticated systems that are designed to manage and process ticket purchases as quickly as possible. The queuing system that appears on your screen will place you at the front of the line as soon as possible.

Remember: there are a lot of fans

We’re expecting this to be a very popular event. When a popular event goes on sale there are hundreds, and sometimes thousands, of customers all attempting to purchase tickets at the same time. Tickets are sold as long as seats are available, and when an act is this popular, sometimes they go very quickly.

Be sure to follow the above tips to ensure you have the best chance of snapping up some tickets.

Australian leg for the “Got Back” tour announced

Jul 31, 2023

Spread the love! If you like what you are seeing, share it on social networks and let others know about The Paul McCartney Project.

On this day, Paul McCartney and his band were on the Gold Coast to perform the last show of their seven-concert Australian leg of  the “Got Back” tour .

A few months before Paul got to Australia, a competition was launched where schools all over the country were asked to send in a video of their pupils performing a McCartney song. The #GotBackToSchool received thousands of entries, and some incredible stuff was sent in, before a judging panel that included top names in the Australian music industry chose Suncoast Christian College’s Senior Band – who’d delivered a soulful version of ‘Maybe I’m Amazed’ – as the winners. The prize was to attend a soundcheck and say hi to Paul in person. So, on the afternoon of the show at the Gold Coast’s Heritage Bank Stadium, the eight winning students and their two teachers were congratulated by Paul himself as they met and chatted inside the stadium, before being treated to a private concert as the band sound checked. “The entire day was like a dream, I couldn’t believe we got to meet such a huge musical legend,” said Jacob Wiener, the band’s pianist/vocalist. “Sir Paul McCartney is my ultimate lifelong musical hero and it was the opportunity of a lifetime!” Typically, despite a full fortnight of rocking and rolling, and everything else involved in touring and just naturally being Paul McCartney, the boss was on top form on the final date of the tour, and delivered another memorable night. There were a couple of special moments that night – the first was Paul dedicating ‘Hey Jude’ to a famous face in the audience (British actor Jude Law, no less), and the second came as Paul began to introduce ‘In Spite Of All The Danger’, a number that he wrote back in 1958. “This is the first song The Beatles recorded,” he said, referring to a tape made by The Quarrymen in Liverpool that summer, “and now we’ve got the last song The Beatles recorded,” he added, alluding to ‘Now And Then’, which completed a particularly full and culturally impactful circle. “It’s a long way, baby.” A long way, indeed. But there’s still further to go. After three weeks and seven storming shows in Australia that The Australian called “beyond compare”, we’re sad to leave, but give us a few days to take a breather and it’s all go again, as Paul gets ready to ‘Get Back’ to Mexico, and then on to Brazil. It’s gonna be one for the history books, so I shall endeavour to report back. Viva la Macca vida! A group of lucky students have won the opportunity of a lifetime to meet Sir Paul McCartney as he kicks off his tour Down Under. Senior music students from Suncoast Christian College in Queensland have been announced as the winners of Frontier Touring’s #GotBackToSchool competition. The win has secured the Suncoast Senior Band an exclusive photo opportunity with the former Beatle, as well as access to both the sound check and the Gold Coast concert next Saturday. Over 40 music classes from across the country entered the competition, with Suncoast Christian College coming out on top with their cover of “Maybe I’m Amazed”. Sir Paul has been left in awe of the students’ performance and says he’s looking forward to meeting them next weekend at Heritage Bank Stadium. “ I’m really amazed by the fact that these kids have learned my song and perform it so well. Paul McCartney

Paul McCartney has his sights set on a return to Australia, for his first tour there in six years.

The evergreen octogenarian had promised “news coming soon” on his socials , and he delivers with the announcement of a new, Australian swing to his Got Back Tour , which will play two markets for the first time – the satellite cities of Newcastle (north of Sydney) and Gold Coast (south of Brisbane).

The beatles, trending on billboard.

The two-time Rock And Roll Hall of Famer will embark on his run with an “intimate” date at Adelaide Entertainment Centre, Oct. 18, the only arena show on the itinerary. When McCartney and the Beatles played the South Australia capital in 1964, at the very peak of their powers, an estimated 350,000 people lined the streets to catch a glimpse of the Fab Four. That’s roughly one-third the city’s current population.

The six-city stretch includes outdoor dates in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane. Perth misses out.

“I’ve got so many amazing memories of my time in Australia over the years,” McCartney comments in a statement, confirming the Australia leg. “Our last trip was so much fun. We had such an incredible time. Each show was a party so we know this is going to be incredibly special. Australia we are going to rock! I can’t wait to see you.”

Those memories and parties coalesced into a tour for the ages. Macca’s five-city One On One Tour won the Helpmann for best international contemporary concert in 2018, awarded by Live Performance Australia, and was declared a career highlight by legendary promoter Michael Gudinski, the late founder of Frontier Touring.

Joining McCartney on the road is his longtime band, Paul “Wix” Wickens (keyboards), Brian Ray (bass/guitar), Rusty Anderson (guitar) and Abe Laboriel Jr (drums).

Following the release of Peter Jackson’s three-part 2021 documentary series The Beatles: Get Back , McCartney embarked on a 16-date U.S. run on his Got Back Tour , which last year nudged his total career gross north of the $1 billion mark , making him one of just 11 artists to surpass the 10-digit mark in Boxscore’s 30-year-plus history.

‘The Planet’s Greatest Living Songwriter’: Why Paul McCartney’s Australian Tour Matters

Paul mccartney has curated a near-three-hour setlist – pulling out all the stops to create a once-in-a-lifetime concert experience for fans young and old.

Paul McCartney

The one and only Paul McCartney is bringing his ‘ Got Back’ tour Down Under this October and November for a run of shows across the east coast. ‘ Got Back’ is Sir Paul’s first Australian tour in six years, and will visit Adelaide, Melbourne, Newcastle, Sydney, Brisbane and the Gold Coast. Tickets are on sale now.

‘Got Back’ kicked off more than a year ago, after the global COVID restrictions thawed out. Since then, McCartney has performed in North America and the UK – including an historic set at Glastonbury 2022 that The Times described as the “best gig ever.”

In fact, every show of the tour thus far has garnered a constellation of five-star reviews. From praise of McCartney as both the “planet’s greatest living songwriter” ( The Independent ) and “greatest living cultural figure” ( The i Newspaper ), to reverence for how flawlessly the 81-year-old can still perform.

“As much as McCartney made history with The Beatles, he’s making history again,” wrote Variety of Sir Paul’s epic appearance in front of 60,000 elated fans. “You haven’t heard a singalong until you’ve heard 200,000 voices doing the na na nas on “ Hey Jude” ,” observed the Daily Telegraph .

Personally selecting over 30 of his favourite songs from the extensive back catalogue of Wings, solo records, and (of course) The Beatles; McCartney has curated a near-three-hour setlist – pulling out all the stops to create a once-in-a-lifetime concert experience for fans young and old.

Helping Macca preach the good word to the masses is his scorching (and longest-standing) band lineup of guitarist Rusty Anderson, bassist/guitarist Brian Ray, ivory tickler Paul ‘Wix’ Wickens, drummer Abe Laboriel Jr., and brass trio Hot City Horns.

The old joke is that if you can remember the ’60s, you weren’t there. Brilliantly, McCartney says his memories of The Beatles’ first visit to Australia in 1964 are ‘a bit of a blur.’ Back then, the Fab Four kicked off in Adelaide, where 350,000 people lined the streets just to catch a glimpse of them.

The ‘ Got Back’ tour also starts in the City of Churches (McCartney’s first time playing there in 30 years) but, by his own request, the show will be at the Adelaide Entertainment Centre, where the band can enjoy a more intimate performance in addition to the larger stadium shows of the tour.

“It feels like a good way to start in Australia,” says the ever-positive McCartney. “I always tell my promoter that if he can, he could stick in a couple of those gigs because we really enjoy them. So yeah, it’s going to be fun!

“I really like playing places I haven’t played recently because it kind of adds to the excitement for me. And I think for the audience too – makes it a little bit more special. So I’m really looking forward to getting back there,” he adds.

But no one is more looking forward to McCartney getting back (no pun intended) than Australian fans. The past few years have been a huge lead up to the ‘ Got Back’ tour, with the release of McCartney III (his 18 th solo album) and then Peter Jackson’s epic documentary series The Beatles: Get Back .

The icing on the cake; the ‘ Got Back’ tour is a way for Australian fans to witness one of the truest legends in music history, and hear all of his classic songs live and loud. Featuring state of the art audio and video, these shows promise an unforgettable experience from every seat in the house.

Act now to snap up the remaining tickets, because this will undoubtedly be the most talked-about rock show for years to come!

Frontier Touring - Paul McCartney

Paul McCartney

Allianz stadium, moore park, presented by frontier touring, got back 2023.

The tour of the year is here! Paul McCartney will bring his acclaimed Got Back Tour to Australia this October/November! Irrefutably one of the most successful singer-songwriters and performers of all time, the former Beatle McCartney is behind the most beloved catalogue in music. With songs like ‘Hey Jude', ‘Live and Let Die', ‘Band on the Run', ‘Let It Be' and so many more, the Paul McCartney live experience is everything any music lover could ever want from a rock show: hours of the greatest moments from the last 60 years of music – dozens of songs from Paul's solo, Wings and of course Beatles catalogues that have formed the soundtracks of our lives. McCartney will return to Australia to perform six huge shows this Spring. Got Back starts with an intimate arena show in Adelaide, the city where The Beatles made history in 1964 on their first visit to Australia. An estimated 350,000 people lined the streets between the airport and Town Hall to catch a glimpse of the band. Paul will then travel to Sydney, Brisbane, and the Gold Coast performing in stadiums – with the show on the Gold Coast being his first concert there. These dates will see McCartney return for his first live performances in Australia in six years. McCartney was last in Australia in December 2017 (which saw him win a Helpmann Award for Best International Contemporary Concert in 2018).

Information for this Show is made available through a source outside of Coast Box Office and subject to change of date, time and availability at the discretion of the agent, promoter or venue. Any indicated capacity should be used as a guide only.
