Scotland Private Tours - Frequently Asked Questions

What is the tipping etiquette in scotland.

Although tipping in Scotland is not compulsory, choosing to tip in restaurants is generally seen as polite and can be used as a kind gesture to demonstrate your appreciation of the quality of their service. Although around 10% is seen as the standard tipping rate, if the service has been of a premium standard then don’t hesitate to leave more. Bear in mind that this is entirely up to you and that there is not much of an expectation for you to do so.

Bartenders serving drinks in bars and pubs in Scotland don’t expect to be tipped by customers, although these are always welcomed. With regards to tipping your walking tour guides or driver tour guides, the same rules apply. Don’t feel obliged to tip but also don’t hesitate to do so if they have demonstrated a stellar service that has enhanced your holiday experience. However if you feel the service has been exceptional on your Scotland private tour then feel free to tip what you feel reflects the service.

What our customers say

We so enjoyed our tour round Edinburgh with the lovely Helen. Not only was she the most delightful company but she gave us such an informative and educational insight into Edinburgh and its endless history.

I thoroughly recommend Infinite Scotland. We had a 6.5 hour guided tour of Edinburgh which flashed by so quickly we didn’t notice the time. We saw and learnt so much of the city and its history, despite spending many months here in the last year. Helen asked us beforehand what we were interested in and […]

Please thank Helen particularly as she is exceptional and a wonderful guide.

"Absolutely stunning day and tour. We are blown away by the care and detail put into our day, by Peter and Carolina. We saw everything on our bucket list and then some. The stories and explanations of historical significance, dates, names, atmosphere is incredible to learn along the way as Peter draws such a rich picture for even the first time Scotland traveler to imagine. We were not disappointed, returned home happily exhausted and felt like we had time traveled through the entire day."

"We had an INCREDIBLE private tour through Scotland thanks to Little Scottish Treasures! Jamie McPhail, our guide and driver, was exceptional! He was so knowledgeable and entertaining! He went out of his way to make sure we had a great tour and didn’t miss anything. When we had heavy rains one day, he rearranged the schedule on the spot. Scotland was the highlight of our three weeks in the UK thanks to Jamie and Little Scottish Treasures!"

A Private Scottish Tour: The best way to experience all that Scotland has to offer.

Scotland, is a land of ancient castles, rolling hills, and dramatic landscapes, a dream destination for many travelers. But if you want to truly immerse yourself in Scottish culture and experience the country's natural beauty like never before, a private Scottish tour with Little Scottish Treasures is the perfect way to go.

Little Scottish Treasures is a local family run company that specializes in providing personalized, small-group tours of Scotland. Our experienced guides will take you on a journey through the Scottish Highlands, the Isle of Skye, Scottish Borders and beyond, introducing you to the country's rich history, culture, and natural wonders.

Here are just a few of the reasons why a private Scottish tour with us is the best way to see Scotland:

Personalized Attention: We will ensure that your tour is tailored to your interests and preferences. This means that you'll have the flexibility to explore the places and activities that most excite you.

Small-Group Experience: Our tours are limited to small groups of up to 8 people, which ensures a more intimate and personalized experience. This also means that we can get off the beaten path and visit places that are off-limits to larger groups.

Expert Local Guides: Our guides are passionate about Scotland and are eager to share their knowledge with you. During your private tour they will provide you with insights into Scottish history, culture, and natural beauty that you won't find anywhere else.

Flexibility and Adaptability: We are able to adapt our itineraries to suit your needs, whether you need to make changes due to weather or other circumstances. We are also flexible with the starting and ending points of our tour.

Unique Experiences: We will take you to some of the less-visited places in Scotland, like hidden castles, scenic viewpoints, and local farms. We will also introduce you to local traditions and customs that you won't find on mass-market tours.

Sustainable Tourism: We are committed to responsible tourism and we will use local suppliers whenever possible. We will also minimize our impact on the environment, such as by using eco-friendly transportation and accommodations.

Whether you're a first-time visitor to Scotland or a seasoned traveler, a private Scottish tour with Little Scottish Treasures is an experience you won't forget.

HEAR FROM OUR GUESTS

“The time spent with David was by far the most relaxing and enjoyable part of our trip to Scotland. His wealth of knowledge about Scottish history and his delivery of the information was engaging. His sense of humor had us laughing throughout the week. We developed a deeper appreciation of the land and the people. It was clear to us that David loves his country as it was present in his delivery.”

Five-Star Private Tours Of Scotland

We spent a fascinating day with James visiting various Outlander Locations in June. His knowledge of history and passion for his native Scotland was captivating.. James's Alba experiences are a must for any tourist, plus his caring attitude towards his clients needs and requests is truly unique.

My husband and I toured privately with James on the Mary Queen of Scots, The Highlander, and the Celtic Experience in July. James was unavailable on the day we wanted to go to Loch Ness and Inverness. However, he knew what we'd see on that tour and suggested changes in our private tours with him so as not to repeat experiences and tailored our tours for us. We feel we saw special places not otherwise offered and that we received a detailed history of Scotland and great attention to our personal experience and needs. Can't miss with James and his authentic kilts.

Was in edinburgh for a short trip and the highlight was a private photography tour to Glencoe and the Highlands! The day started with James picking up really early in edinburgh and we spent a full day exploring Glencoe and the highlands. Even though I was the only avid photographer on the trip, James made sure that the rest of the tour group was entertained throughout. Thank you James! highly recommended.

Our group had a fantastic trip with alba experience. James took us to many beautiful sites, he was friendly and knowledgeable about all the places, with excellent photography tips. The lunch stops and accommodation arranged were all to a high standard with very tasty food. Can't wait to see what tour he can arrange for our next trip. Thanks again James

We booked a 7-day private tour for our group of five. From the limousine service to the hotel staff, we were never unsure about where to be or if we had questions, they were answered. Our tour guide Ross was absolutely fantastic! He knew everything about all of Scotland and really catered our tour to what we wanted. Ross even made a few special side trips when we mentioned the Highland cows and a specific pub we had heard about. He had a great wealth of knowledge of the history and told many fantastic legends along the way. He even had a music playlist to suit specific sights. He really made the trip extra special. We will never forget it.

1. How safe is Scotland?

Scotland is a safe country for visitors, and you can rest easy knowing there’s a good public healthcare system in place. For tips and advice before you travel, we recommend reading this short guide to health and safety in Scotland .

2. What is a private tour?

On a privately guided trip, you and your chosen travel companions will be accompanied by an expert guide. Your guide will be there throughout your trip, sharing their insider knowledge with you.

Your dedicated travel consultant will select your tour leader to match your personal interests where possible, whether that’s Scottish ancestry , photography or something else.

Each day your driver-guide will take you to the region’s top attractions, and perhaps even some hidden gems, telling stories and answering questions as you go. All of this extra insight that your guide provides will bring Scotland to life and make your trip extra special.

If you love the idea of discovering Scotland with a guide, but would prefer to meet like-minded travellers, then we recommend a Scotland small group tour . This involves exploring Scotland in a spacious minibus driven by a guide. And with groups of up to just 15 guests, you’ll still get to enjoy one-to-one time with your guide.

3. Why is a local tour guide so important?

A local tour guide will make your journey come alive, as you’ll get to see Scotland through the eyes of someone who calls it home!

As well as being your private chauffeur, your guide will share Scottish folklore stories, alongside facts about the country’s history and natural landscape. And, of course, they’ll take you to the top spots for photographs.

Plus, you can relax knowing that your licensed guide has been chosen by us to meet our high service standards. All of this means you’re sure to have an unforgettable trip!

4. What should I do and see in Scotland?

Visit Scotland and you’ll be able to soak up its diverse landscapes and coastline, along with a number of treasured heritage sites.

Exploring Edinburgh – the Scottish capital – is a must. Packed with UNESCO-listed sites, one of the best ways to see the city is on a walking tour. If this is something you’d like to do, let your travel consultant know and they’ll add a guided city excursion to your itinerary.

Here’s a list of more things to do and the best places to go in Scotland :

  • • Wander Edinburgh ’s historic Grassmarket district and head to Calton Hill for stunning views
  • • Visit Scotland’s largest lake, Loch Lomond , in the Trossachs National Park
  • • Head to the legendary Loch Ness and learn about the myths that lie within
  • • Take an Isle of Skye tour and you’ll be treated to breathtaking scenery
  • • Watch as the Jacobite train (or “Hogwart’s Express”) steams through Glenfinnan
  • • Experience Glen Coe , an enchanting valley where mountains and rivers await
  • • Tour a whisky distillery or two on the Isle of Islay and taste the island’s famous single malts
  • • Stroll along the beaches and charming streets of the seaside town, St Andrews
  • • Uncover the dramatic real-life filming locations that feature in the iconic Outlander series

In fact, for fans of this hit TV show, a Scotland Outlander trip is a wonderful way to go behind the scenes. Your expert guide will take you to the series’ most beautiful and historic filming locations, including Perthshire and the Clava Cairns. Plus, you could check out some of the best places to eat on the Outlander Trail .

Or perhaps you’d like to dive into the world of Scottish whisky. In this case, a privately guided whisky tour of Scotland is one of the best ways to make the most of your time here.

This is because your guide will give you the insider scoop on the top single malts and take you to a number of distilleries. Not only that, but you’ll also be free to enjoy a “dram” (glass) or two as your guide does all of the driving.

Check out these articles for tips on where to go and what to do in Scotland, depending on the season:

  • •  Scotland in summer
  • •  Scotland in winter
  • •  Why you should spend next spring or autumn in Scotland

5. How many castles are there in Scotland?

Historians estimate that there were once over 3,000 castles scattered across Scotland. While not all of these remain, you’ll still have plenty of options if castles are one of the reasons you’re visiting Scotland.

You’ll find Scotland’s castles in all shapes and forms. These include fully restored and maintained sites that are open to the public, private family homes, lavish hotels, and even active army barracks.

Meanwhile, others have fallen into ruin. But these can make for some of the most dramatic sights. For example, head to Dunnottar Castle , perched atop the Aberdeenshire sea cliffs, to see for yourself.

To get an idea of the best ones you should visit, be sure to read this guide to the top Scottish castles . For instance, if you’re spending time in the capital city, don’t miss Edinburgh Castle, home to the United Kingdom’s oldest crown jewels.

You could also check out the castles and royal residences used as filming locations in the hit TV series The Crown .

6. Can you see the northern lights in Scotland?

Yes, it’s possible to see the  northern lights in Scotland during the winter months. But it’s good to know that glimpsing the aurora here is considered a rare treat. This is because the Arctic Circle is where sightings are most frequent, and Scotland lies south of here.

So, if seeing the aurora borealis is high on your wish list, we recommend one of these northern lights packages in Iceland , Norway or Lapland .

7. When should I visit Scotland?

Finding the perfect time to visit Scotland depends on where you’d like to go and what you’d like to do on your trip. And while Scotland does experience distinct seasons, the weather is often variable. So much so, that you may hear the locals describing the weather as “four seasons in a day”.

Summer is the most popular time for a trip to Scotland. But travel anytime between April and September , and you can expect milder temperatures and drier weather compared to the winter.

The countryside will be at its most colourful during spring and summer, flaunting wildflowers, heather-clad hillsides and vibrant greenery. As well as being a great time for enjoying the outdoors and wildlife watching, you could attend a Scottish festival or lively Highland games.

Venture to Scotland in the autumn and you’ll see the country’s deciduous woodlands set ablaze with fiery autumnal shades. Or, travel in winter – December to March – if it’s brisk walks, frosty scenery and snow-dusted mountains that you’re after.

It’s also worth noting that Scottish whisky tours are possible from March to October . This is because some distilleries have downtime during winter and are closed to the public.

Discover more about Scottish tours in summer and winter breaks in Scotland by reading this helpful blog: Best time to visit Scotland – your complete guide .

8. What type of vehicle will I be touring in?

The vehicle you will travel around Scotland in depends on the size of your party. We can cater for group sizes up to 15. But no matter how many of you are travelling, your car or minibus will be spacious, clean and comfortable.

9. How many people can we have on a private tour?

Nordic Visitor privately guided trips can accommodate up to 7 people on an escorted tour of any length.

If there are over 7 of you, then it’s good to know that private tours are limited to a maximum of 6 days travelling with a guide. This is to ensure we comply with the UK’s minibus tour regulations.

10. When will I meet my guide?

You’ll meet your private tour guide the day after you arrive in Edinburgh. This lets you rest after your journey and gives you the freedom to spend a day touring Edinburgh yourself.

11. Do you tip tour guides in Scotland?

Tipping your guide is entirely up to you. In Scotland, providing a gratuity is not expected. Of course, if you’d like to show your gratitude with a tip, we’re sure your guide will appreciate it.

12. Can I personalise my tour?

Yes, you can personalise your trip by extending your stay in Edinburgh at either end of your private tour. Or you might like to customise your itinerary by adding optional excursions. For example, you could have afternoon tea at Edinburgh Castle or take a guided walking tour of Edinburgh’s underground vaults.

Plus, if it’s more convenient for your onward travel arrangements, you could switch your final night’s stay to Glasgow .

For more information, or if you have something specific in mind, don’t hesitate to get in touch with us to ask about bespoke tours in Scotland .

13. When should I organise my flights?

We recommend that you organise your flights once your package has been booked and confirmed by your dedicated travel consultant. This ensures that your tour is secured, and you have the correct timing information when you book your flights.

You can of course check for flight dates and times beforehand. And if you have any questions, you can contact your consultant for advice.

14. How long is a flight to Scotland?

“To celebrate our 40th wedding anniversary, we wanted to take a trip to Scotland.  Being novice international travelers, however, we didn’t have much of an idea of where to start.  Fortunately, Brighter Things came to our rescue!

Jessy handled everything from start to finish.  she took care of flight and hotel reservations, established a full itinerary of the points of interest that were on our list of things to see, offered tips on what to pack, outlined restaurant stops to satisfy the local dining experiences we had requested, provided information on the most economical currency exchange practices and offered tips on how to save money on bringing or mailing gifts back to the states., it was a stress-free experience and probably the best wedding anniversary gift we have shared.  when we again travel abroad, brighter things will be the first phone call we make.”.
