Sony Open in Hawaii 2024

Each January the Sony Open in Hawaii attracts 144 of the world's greatest golf professionals to the Waialae Country Club on the island of Oahu. The event is the largest charity golf event in Hawaii.  With a significant start of generating $256,000 for 43 charities in 1999, tournament charity proceeds is now $1.2 million annually benefiting more than 100 not-for-profit organizations each year and has raised $24 million total for over 350 local not-for-profits.

Global impact of the event reaches over 560 million homes in some 216 countries via multiple national and international broadcast networks.  One of the most international events on the PGA TOUR schedule, the Sony Open showcases international golf talent and camaraderie against the backdrop of Hawaii's natural beauty to the world.

Since 2016, the  Sony Open in Hawaii has been honored by the State of Hawaii with a Green Business award in recognition of the tournament’s energy efficiency efforts and sustainable business practices.  The annual week-long Sony Open tournament serves as a stunning backdrop for PGA TOUR competition and also a reminder about the importance of keeping Hawaii beautiful.

2023 Sony Open in Hawaii: How to watch, TV schedule, streaming, tee times

The Sony Open is the first full-field PGA Tour event of the new year.

The 2023 Sony Open in Hawaii gets underway this week at Waialae Country Club in Honolulu. Here’s everything you need to know to watch the tournament.

Sony Open preview

With the Tournament of Champions behind us, we now get to enjoy the first full-field event of the new year, and among the long list of pros teeing it up at the Seth Raynor-designed Waialae are several stars looking to make their mark early in 2023.

That includes three-time major champion Jordan Spieth . Spieth is looking more and more like his old self on the course, capturing PGA Tour wins in his last two seasons. Spieth finished T13 at last week’s TOC, a good sign for things to come.

2023 Sentry Tournament of Champions odds: Jon Rahm leads golf’s best as betting favorite

Spieth will be joined by defending champion Hideki Matsuyama . The 2021 Masters champion won twice early last season, but has fallen to No. 21 in the Official World Golf Ranking since. Career PGA Tour win No. 9 would go a long way into improving his ranking.

One other player drawing a lot of interest this week is 20-year-old Tom Kim . Kim already has a win on the season, thanks to his triumph at the Shirners Children’s Open in October. He finished T5 last week, and a win this week would extend his fairytale 2022 into the new year.

Golf Channel and NBC will provide TV coverage of the Sony Open in Hawaii, and PGA Tour Live on ESPN+ and Peacock will stream the action online, with ESPN+ providing exclusive early coverage of all four rounds.

2024 Sony Open predictions, expert picks, odds, field rankings, golf best bets at Waialae Country Club

The pga tour remains in hawaii for the first full-field event of the season.

brian-harman-2024-sentry.jpg

The first full-field event of the PGA Tour season gets underway this week at the 2024 Sony Open in Hawaii. Staying in the Aloha State, the PGA Tour makes the short trip from Maui to Honolulu and kicks off a new campaign as players vie for FedEx Cup positioning and access to signature events at Waialae Country Club.

For the first time ever, the PGA Tour has introduced the Swing 5, a new qualifying mechanism where the top five players in terms of FedEx Cup points in the Sony Open, The American Express and the Farmers Insurance Open will gain entry into the next signature event, the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. The WM Phoenix Open will then be played, and the combination of FedEx Cup points from these four events will send the top five players to the Genesis Invitational.

The fields for these two signature events are expected to reach up to 80 players, and with only 61 qualified as of this week, plenty of spots remain. Already in the field for the signature events are players such as last week's winner Chris Kirk, Ludvig Åberg, Tyrrell Hatton, Matt Fitzpatrick, Russell Henley, Sahith Theegala, Eric Cole and Brian Harman, all of whom are playing after teeing it up in The Sentry.

A number of rookies from the DP World Tour and the Korn Ferry Tour will be making their season debuts as well as familiar names who return from injury. Will Zalatoris is top of mind there as the former FedEx St. Jude Championship winner tees it up on the PGA Tour for the first time since the 2023 WGC-Dell Match Play. Maverick McNealy makes just his third start since June, while former U.S. Open champion Gary Woodland returns to action following a successful brain surgery in September.

2024 Sony Open schedule

Dates:  Jan. 11-14 |  Location:  Waialae Country Club — Honolulu, Hawaii Par:  70 |  Yardage:  7,044 |  Purse:  $8,300,000

2024 Sony Open field, odds

  • Ludvig Åberg (16-1): The Swedish superstar finally flew through some turbulence at The Sentry as a third-round 77 sent him tumbling down the leaderboard. He bounced back quietly with a 10-under 63 on Sunday and looks primed to contend for his second PGA Tour victory in his last three starts. Despite already being a household name, Åberg will continue to experience a number of firsts in his first full season on the PGA Tour including this week at Waialae Country Club.
  • Tyrrell Hatton (18-1)
  • Matt Fitzpatrick (18-1): FItzpatrick's inclusion in the field is a product of playing in The Sentry as he makes his Sony Open debut. Waialae could prove to be an ideal fit for the former U.S. Open winner; there is some correlation with Harbour Town Golf Links where Fitzpatrick was victorious in 2023. He has been brilliant since August with seven top-20 finishes in eight starts including a win at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship. If his iron play improves compared to last week, the 29-year-old should threaten for his third PGA Tour title.
  • Russell Henley (20-1): Henley has done just about everything at the Sony Open as he won in 2013 during his rookie season and more recently lost in a playoff to Hideki Matsuyama in 2022. He may very well be the most underrated player on Tour, coming into the 2024 season riding 13 top-20 finishes in his last 16 tournaments. Henley's run of form did not translate to a quality outing at Maui should in Honolulu.
  • Brian Harman (20-1)
  • Corey Conners (25-1)
  • Chris Kirk (30-1):  If Kirk had a Hawaii event circled on his calendar during the offseason, it would not have been The Sentry but rather the Sony Open. Last week's winner has been stellar around the par 70 throughout his career with three podium finishes and a couple more top 10s to boot. There is no reason to suggest he can't win back-to-back and become the first player since Justin Thomas in 2017 to pull off the Hawaii double.
  • Eric Cole (30-1)
  • J.T. Poston (33-1)
  • Byeong Hun An (33-1)
  • Sahith Theegala (33-1): In terms of course fit, Kapalua may have been as good as it gets for Theegala. Waialae presents a stark contrast and could lead to some struggles for the man who finished one off the pace at The Sentry. Theegala's ceiling has always been high, but he looks to be adding some consistency to his repertoire. The 26-year-old now has a win, a runner-up result and three other top-20 results in his last seven worldwide starts.

Sony Open in Hawaii history, results and past winners

pga tour event hawaii

The Sony Open in Hawaii is the PGA Tour's first full-field event of the calendar year on the schedule. The event is the second of two events in the year-opening Aloha Swing.

The Sony Open in Hawaii became a PGA Tour event in 1965, an offshoot of the Hawaii State Open. The original idea was to have the tournament be an event played in the fall, but after not being played in 1970, the event moved to the early winter.

After the 2013 season, the PGA Tour moved to a wrap-around schedule, meaning the Sony Open in Hawaii was no longer the second event on a schedule that now ran from September (or October) through August (or September). The Sony Open in Hawaii has remained in its same calendar spot -- the first full-field tournament of the year -- as part of the Hawaii Swing and played after the Sony Tournament of Champions. Now the schedule has changed, and the Sony Open in Hawaii is aagain the second event of the season.

No player has won the Sony Open in Hawaii more than twice, with Hubert Green, Corey Pavin, Lanny Wadkins, Ernie Els and Jimmy Walker each winning twice. Els (2003, 2004) and Walker (2014, 2015) each won in back-to-back years.

Sony Open in Hawaii format

The Sony Open in Hawaii is played over four days, and there is a cut for the qualifying field. At the end of the 72-hole event, the lowest score wins.

Sony Open in Hawaii host courses

  • Waialae Country Club, Honolulu, Hawaii: 1965-present

Sony Open in Hawaii past sponsors

The Sony Open in Hawaii has just two title sponsors over the years:

  • Hawaiian Open: 1965-1990
  • United (Airlines) Hawaiian Open: 1991-1998
  • Sony Open in Hawaii: 1999-present

Sony has been one of the longest-running title sponsors in PGA Tour history.

Jon rahm wins 2023 sentry tournament of champions after collin morikawa's historic collapse, share this article.

pga tour event hawaii

KAPALUA, Hawaii – Like a raging bull, Jon Rahm charged from behind to steal the 2023 Sentry Tournament of Champions.

Rahm made nine birdies and an eagle on Sunday to shoot 10-under 63 at Kapalua Resort’s Plantation Course and rally from as many as nine strokes behind during the final round to edge 54-hole leader Collin Morikawa by two strokes.

A year ago, Rahm shot 33-under but was pipped by a stroke by Cameron Smith, his second runner-up finish at the TOC, and this time his birdie count was almost as plentiful as the pineapples that used to grow on the hillside layout. He signed for a 72-hole aggregate of 27-under 265.

“To come back this year and shoot a very low score again, I mean, I’m what, 60-under par in these last two tournaments?” he said. “It would have been tough to shoot that low twice and not win it. So I’m glad I had the chance and I’m glad I did it.”

The 28-year-old Spaniard took advantage of Morikawa’s series of back-nine blunders to earn his eighth PGA Tour win. Morikawa, a two-time major winner who was bidding for his first win since the 2021 British Open, tied the largest 54-hole collapse in PGA Tour history after he entered the final round with a six-shot advantage. It was a shocking turn of events as Morikawa played the first 67 holes bogey-free and tacked on three front-nine birdies on Sunday to extend his lead to as many as nine. But he bladed a bunker shot over the green at 14 that led to his first bogey of the tournament, chunked a pitch at 15 and added a third straight bogey at 16.

“The game felt so easy for so long and now no matter what he does it seems like it doesn’t work out,” said PGA Tour Radio’s Mark Wilson.

Morikawa joined a dubious list of nine players who have squandered a 54-hole six-shot lead in Tour history: the first to do so was Bobby Cruickshank at the 1928 Florida Open, while the most-recent was Scottie Scheffler at last year’s Tour Championship.

“Sadness,” Morikawa said of how felt after shooting a final-round 72. “I don’t know. It sucks. You work so hard and you give yourself these opportunities and just bad timing on bad shots and kind of added up really quickly.”

Rahm held a share of the first-round lead with Morikawa after carding a 64 but shot himself in the foot on Friday, shooting 71 and was mad enough with his putting performance that he kicked a trash can on his way to scoring. He was being left in the dust on Saturday, making just one birdie on the front nine when his caddie Adam Hayes stepped in and gave him a pep talk.

“He had hit a real poor shot for him on nine,” Hayes said. “I could tell he wasn’t that focused. I said to him whatever you do on the next 27 holes be uber committed and really clear on picking your start lines, picking your finish lines and be really committed to a number and that’s what he did. He hardly missed a shot after that.”

Rahm reeled off five birdies to shoot 67, but trailed by seven and figured, “we’re going to need a small miracle.”

Then he made a bogey at the first hole on Sunday. “I was going to need somewhat of a larger miracle,” he said.

The epic comeback began with a birdie at the second as Rahm’s putter heated up — he ranked first in Strokes Gained: putting for the week — and made five birdies in all on the front. Still, he trailed by six at the turn before what looked to be a walk in the park for Morikawa turned into a Stephen King horror movie. Rahm’s rally was aided by a 5-under stretch thanks to three consecutive birdies starting at No. 12 and an eagle at 15.

“You need a combination of both. Me having a really good day, which I did, and Collin not having his best,” Rahm said.

Counting his success on the DP World Tour, Rahm has registered three wins in his last four official starts, and the victory in Maui could be the launching pad to a big year.

“I feel like since August I’ve been the best player in the world,” Rahm said. “Earlier in the year clearly Scottie was that player, then Rory was that player, and I feel like right now it’s been me.”
