Top location at Fleet Steps, Farm Cove for photos?

Over on the east side of the Botanic Garden just down from Mrs Macquarie’s Road is a beautiful spot to bring a friend or two and take some shots in the late afternoon.

The later the better as when the sun starts to set and some lovely hues brush the sky use you Speedlight to make you portraits pop against the city high-rise building lights .

Only paid parking or walk in.

NB. Depending on the type of photography we are doing, we may need a permit to photograph in some City Parks and Sydney Harbour Foreshore areas.

Where to shoot in hyde park sydney.

So many great spots to shoot family portraits in this Sydney park favourite, here are a few.

Archibald Fountain, Hyde Park North is a good place to start. Take some shots facing south along the Hyde Park Central Avenue with it arching Hills Weeping Fig trees framing the portrait , together with the dimmer luminance under the canopy you can make the model pop by using a little Speedlight for the foreground.

Another spot used less are the Sandringham Memorial Garden and Fountain area, (next to Park Street). You can also get some great photos with St Mary’s Cathedral in the background.

Some paid street parking, paid parking stations or public transport from the Sydney city circle train line.

Where is the best spot from Hickson Road Reserve for photos?

For the most Australian iconic backdrop in your photos there are few places like the Hickson Road Reserve to take photos from.

Just south east of the little park is the board walk area around Sydney Harbour and round to Circular Quay. Right on the corner is the perfect spot to take photos of your friends and family with the iconic sails of the Opera House in the background. Very touristy, yes, but why not enjoy our own backyard.

A tip for this spot is to avoid the midday sun. Overcast day is preferred if you get a choice of weather and also avoid the weekends are there will no doubt lots of people enjoying the foreshore walk.

A little paid street parking if you are lucky otherwise catch a train from Circular Quay station.

  • Capturing the Kremlin and central Moscow: the higher, the better

photo tours sydney

Of course, pictures of the Kremlin shot from the Red Square are no doubt iconic and must-have, but they are taken by thousands of tourists every day and can hardly make a wow-effect on your friends on Instagram and other social networks.

Another problem with shooting from Red Square is that the photos do not fully represent the scale of the medieval fortress of Kremlin. So, you need to make some steps further and higher to catch the right shot. You’ll be surprised by the fact that the panoramic views of the Kremlin are pretty easy to get. We have four hints for you: Zaryadie, Ritz Carlton, Patriarch bridge, and Radisson riverboat.

If you want to not only make beautiful photos but also to learn something interesting about the history of Russia, we recommend an individual tour of the Kremlin. You can order it online here .

photo tours sydney

First, go to Zaryadye, which is located right next to the Red Square, behind the St Basil’s Cathedral, on the closest Moscow river bank. The most impressive views over the Kremlin are unfolded from the so-called Flying bridge of Zaryadye and Glass Dome building in the back part of the park.

Zaryadye is the new place of attraction in Moscow. It’s a landscape park, opened in September 2017 by the Moscow government on the hill where the giant soviet hotel ‘Rossiya’ located before its demolition in the early 2000-s. As a bonus, you’ll get an incredible view over one of Stalin’s skyscrapers, located on the opposite bank of Moscow river — the so-called Vysotka at Kotelnicheskaya, used as a residence of many Russian famous people and officials.

  • The roof of the Ritz Carlton Hotel

This option is ok only in case if you’re ready to pay the average bar bill of over 2500 rubles (about $40). Visit the O2 Lounge Bar on the roof of the Ritz Carlton Hotel, where all the global celebrities take their Moscow pictures, from Angelina Jolie to Robert Downey Jr.

But such photo investments seem to pay off immediately. The deck of the bar makes an excellent panorama point for the Kremlin walls and towers, the Historical Museum, the Great Kremlin Palace, and the Kremlin cathedrals. All these landmarks are not too far away, which makes them perfectly recognizable, even in the background.

  • The Radisson riverboat

photo tours sydney

This hint will be useful in case you’re traveling to Moscow in the cold season. River transportation in Moscow doesn't stop in winter. Many enclosed and heated tourist yachts with panoramic windows and ice-breaking equipment can be found in the Moscow River. For instance, one of the most recognizable is the flotilla Radisson.

Their route goes past all the main sights of pre-revolutionary and Soviet Moscow – from Stalin's skyscrapers (Ukraina hotel and Vysotka at Kotelnicheskaya) to the Kremlin and the Novodevichy Convent. It is possible to go out to the open deck and take photos of you and your family or friends against a backdrop of the city’s lights and their reflection in the river. The cruise lasts 2.5 hours. You can book a tour with a car roundtrip transfer from your hotel to the pier and back: book online here

  • Patriarch bridge

photo tours sydney

The bridge is located further from the Kremlin, than Zaryadye or Ritz Carlton, so the Kremlin walls on your photos will look smaller. The brighter side of walking through the bridge is that you can do more fabulous pics of the Moscow river and city center landscapes. The Moscow river and the pretty recognizable giant statue of Peter the Great are ideally viewed from the bridge. Be prepared that it’s a famous and popular pedestrian area for tourists all over the world so the bridge may be crowded.

Also, the bridge is a part of a long promenade which leads from the Christ the Saviour Cathedral through the Balchug island to the opposite bank of the Moscow River, where another pedestrian area — Museon embankment — is ready to joy you with its cafes, cozy lawns and impressive views over the river flow, ducks and boats.

  • Moscow City

photo tours sydney

The best spot to shoot the famous Moscow business downtown is located on the Taras Shevchenko embankment. To get there you need to come to the metro stations Vystavochnaya or Delovoi Tsentr, then go to the Bagration bridge (use the metro navigation, the path is tricky), cross the bridge — and voilà! You’ve reached the best spot for shooting, posing, sending selfies, and Instagramming.

  • Ponds and orangeries

photo tours sydney

There are two ponds in Moscow, that deserve your attention in summer: the Chistye ponds (actually there is only one pond, but it’s worth it) and the pond in Gorky Park, which is full of small boats and catamarans. Both lakes are lost between the green alleys and are drowning in all the shades of green. Those are the perfect spots to catch the moment of peace amid the madness of big city life.

For the Love of Plants: Garden Club of America to Tour UConn’s Botanical Conservatory

Showcasing a world-class botanical collection and expertise right here at UConn

photo tours sydney

Various plants grow in the greenhouses of the UConn Botanical Conservatory on March 11, 2024. (Sydney Herdle/UConn Photo)

On April 27 th , the UConn Botanical Conservatory will be hosting a tour for the Garden Club of America . The GCA, which was founded over 100 years ago and has 18,000 members in chapters nationwide is holding its annual meeting in Hartford Connecticut this year, and an outing to the most biologically diverse collection of plants in the Northeast is a perfect fit for the club’s horticultural enthusiasts.

Professor Emeritus and Director of the UConn Botanical Conservatory Cynthia Jones says the visit from such a prestigious horticultural organization recognizes the immense educational and scientific value the of the plants in the conservatory.

Various plants grow in the greenhouses of the UConn Botanical Conservatory

“They are the most prominent national garden club in America and the fact that they asked for tours of the UConn Botanical Conservatory speaks to the reputation of our collection.  It is a huge honor for us and is a point of pride for UConn,” says Jones.

The Garden Club of America’s purpose is to share horticultural knowledge and the interdependence between plants, the ecosystem, and environmental protection, and they do this through extensive community outreach, conferences, and public engagement. They also award scholarships, which have supported the research of several Ecology and Evolutionary Biology students I the past.

With an expected turnout of over 160 people, it will be the biggest tour the conservatory has ever led, says Botanical Collections Manager Meghan Moriarty .

For those who have not yet visited the greenhouses situated behind the Torrey Life Sciences Building, the Botanical Collections is a place like no other on campus. Not just home to the most diverse botanical collection in the Northeast, the collection is one of the most diverse at a public academic institution in the United States.

“We have over 2,700 species spread across 5,000 individual plants. This includes eight species that are extinct in the wild.  Collections of living material like the Conservatory’s are critical to the survival of those species.”

Moriarty recalls a recent example of this critical role:

Meghan Moriarty, collection manager of the UConn Botanical Conservatory, waters some of the plants in the tropical room of the Conservatory's greenhouses

“One of the plants that we grow here that is extinct in the wild is the Rwandan water lily, Nymphaea thermarum . It was known to only grow near a specific hot spring, and the population was wiped out due to habitat loss. We were contacted recently by someone from the National Herbarium of Rwanda because they recently discovered another population of the Nymphaea in the wild. They were wondering if we still had the plant in the Living Plant Collection, I told them we did, and it is flowering right now. He was very excited because many of the other places that had Nymphaea were not able to grow it long term and get it to flower.”

Jones says this example speaks to the extraordinary talent and knowledge required to keep the collection’s plants alive, especially since, in the case of the Rwandan water lily, getting some of these plants to flower is tricky. Besides UConn, successfully flowering Rwandan water lilies are kept at the Kew Royal Botanical Gardens in the United Kingdom, and both collections could someday help reintroduce populations of this plant in the wild.

“It requires a great deal of expertise to care for a collection this diverse. I don’t think there’s any other academic institution in the country, except for maybe two that have collections this extensive. It is a unique resource that sets us apart from other institutions,” says Jones.

For the GCA tour, Moriarty is making plans to ensure docents will be available to share information and guide visitors through the greenhouses, which house plants from many different growing zones and regions across the globe.

“When you walk into the collection, you are totally immersed in different colors, smells, textures, and it’s always changing day by day,” says Jones.

Various plants grow in the greenhouses of the UConn Botanical Conservatory

Moriarty, who brings a wealth of expertise in research and commercial growing says working in the living collection is exciting,

“Every day is so refreshing walking through there and I think from the perspective of visitors to the greenhouse, they have a chance to see things that they will never see anywhere else.”

Moriarty also enjoys the experience of working within the conservatory community. Though the community is a small one, the conservatories all work together by propagating and sharing plants to collectively preserve as much as they can.

“If you have something particularly rare, you always want to make sure you try to propagate it and share it with other collections.  You want to have a species of plant in as many places as possible, especially if it is difficult to grow or is rare,” says Moriarty. “We do a lot of trading with other institutions that have Living Plant Collections here in New England and also across the country and abroad.  It’s important to network and talk to other people that are doing what we do.”

Moriarty and Jones are hopeful that the GCA visit will help expand their network, or at the very least, get the word out about this amazing collection tucked in the middle of the Storrs campus.

Jones says, “I hope people will learn about how much we do in this facility, and also that the residents of Connecticut will recognize the resource and amazing opportunity to see what we have here.”

Follow the Botanical Collections on Instagram , Facebook , and tumblr . If you are on or near campus, the greenhouse hours are 8:00am-4:00pm Monday-Friday and Saturday 10:00am-2:00pm (closed Sunday).

Zack Snyder’s “Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver” landing on Netflix and Taylor Swift’s “The Tortured Poets Department” album are some of the new television, movies, music and games headed to a device near you.

Also among the streaming offerings worth your time as selected by The Associated Press’ entertainment journalists : A family of ducks is coaxed into flying south for the winter in the animated movie “Migration” and Conan O’Brien as the brunt of jokes is on full display in his new travel show “Conan O’Brien Must Go” for Max.

NEW MOVIES TO STREAM

— The cautious father (Kumail Nanjiani) of a family of ducks is coaxed into flying south for the winter in “Migration” (steaming Friday on Peacock), the latest animation from Illumination, the maker of “Despicable Me” and “The Super Mario Bros. Movie.” Penned by “White Lotus” creator Mike White, “Migration” is another, albeit more kid-friendly examination of the pros and cons of an exotic vacation. In my review, I wrote that “Migration” “is vividly animated with warm cartoon tones that would do Daffy proud. But it never quite spreads its wings.” With Elizabeth Banks, Danny DeVito, Carol Kane, Awkwafina and Keegan-Michael Key.

— People tend to love or hate the films of Zack Snyder, the maker of brawny CGI extravaganzas like “Man of Steel,” “Justice League” and “Army of the Dead.” If you’re the former, the arrival of “Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver” (Friday on Netflix) is a date you’ve circled since the December debut of the first installment. Sofia Boutella and Djimon Hounsou lead the ensemble cast in Snyder’s “Star War” riff space opera.

– If some films are laden and overstuffed, how about those that pass like a brief encounter? A new series streaming on the Criterion Channel asks: How much can happen in a night? The series collects some of the best films that transpire entirely from dusk ‘til dawn. Evenings may pass in conversation (“My Dinner With Andre”) or bloodshed (“Night of the Living Dead”), but in all of them, the sun eventually arrives to break a nocturnal spell. Among the highlights: Elaine May’s “Mikey and Nicky,” Martin Scorsese’s “After Hours,” Jim Jarmusch’s “Night on Earth” and Agnes Varda’s “Cléo from 5 to 7.”

NEW MUSIC TO STREAM

— It is Taylor Swift ’s world, and we continue to just live in it. On Friday, the savior of both contemporary pop music and the U.S. economy will release her highly anticipated 11th studio album, “The Tortured Poets Department.” Swift surprise-announced the release in February at the 2024 Grammys after receiving the trophy for best pop vocal album for her tenth LP, “Midnights.” The day after the Grammys, Swift shared the track list, teasing 16 songs and two features: “Fortnight,” featuring Post Malone — who is fresh off a feature on Beyoncé's “Act ll: Cowboy Carter” — and “Florida!!!” featuring Florence + the Machine. At a show in Melbourne, Australia, Swift described the album as “a lifeline,” adding “I’ve never had an album where I needed songwriting more than I needed it on ‘Tortured Poets.’”

— Three decades into their career, and Pearl Jam’s 12th studio album, “Dark Matter,” arrives the same day as Swift’s — but don’t consider it competition; they’re keeping it in the family. Both acts are signed to Republic Records. Produced by Andrew Watt , “Dark Matter” is Pearl Jam’s first new record since 2020’s “Gigaton,” – a hard-rocking collection of songs from the saints of the 1990s Seattle scene that AP’s Andrew Dalton described as “athletic in its speed, aggression, and tenacity, sounding like it would make men of their age sore in the aftermath.” Listen responsibly.

NEW SHOWS TO STREAM

— Fresh off her Oscar nomination, Lily Gladstone stars in a new limited series for Hulu called “Under the Bridge” with Riley Keough. Based on a true-crime novel by Rebecca Godfrey, “Under the Bridge” tells the story of the murder of Canadian teen Reena Virk in the late 1990s. Gladstone plays a police officer investigating the case and Keough plays Godfrey, who immersed herself in Virk’s world to detail not only what happened, but the social and cultural implications surrounding her death. “Under the Bridge” premiered Wednesday on Hulu and is already garnering Emmy buzz for both Gladstone and Keough.

— Conan O’Brien loves to be the brunt of a joke and that’s on full display in his new travel show “Conan O’Brien Must Go” for Max. Cameras follow the comedian as he visits countries like Ireland, Thailand, Argentina and Norway. When the series was announced last May, Max released the following quote from O’Brien, “My fans around the globe never asked me to visit them, so I did.” “Conan O’Brien Must Go” debuted Thursday on Max.

— “Bridgerton” star Nicola Coughlan leaves the Regency era and steps into the present starring in the British comedy “Big Mood” for Tubi. Coughlan plays Maggie, a young playwright with bipolar disorder who has decided to go off her meds to tap into her creativity. Maggie relies on her loyal best friend Eddie (Lydia West) to get her through her daily struggles, but their friendship is tested as Maggie’s mental health deteriorates. “Big Mood” premieres Fridayon Tubi.

— The popular fantasy children’s book series “The Spiderwick Chronicles” has been adapted for TV. The story follows teenage twins Simon and Jared and their older sister Mallory after they move to an old, family estate called Spiderwick, which is also inhabited by magical creatures. The show also stars Christian Slater, Joy Bryant and Jack Dylan Grazer. “The Spiderwick Chronicles” premieres on Roku Channel on Friday.

— National Geographic’s popular “Secrets Of” franchise has a new installment called “Secrets of the Octopus.” Debuting Sunday, the three-part series details the surprising characteristics of octopuses. These marine animals may look funny, but they have a level of intelligence where they solve problems, scheme and even communicate with other species. Narrated by Paul Rudd and executive produced by James Cameron, the docuseries is inspired by the book and research of Sy Montgomery.

— Alicia Rancilio

NEW VIDEO GAMES TO PLAY

— The second thing you’ll notice about Harold Halibut — after its goofy title — is its distinctive graphics. German indie studio Slow Bros. has built an entire game around hand-crafted models, and the result looks like stop-motion animation. The setting is a city-sized spaceship, the Fedora, that fled Earth 250 years earlier but unfortunately landed at the bottom of an alien ocean. Harold himself is the awkward young assistant to the ship’s chief scientist, who’s trying to figure out how to get it back into space. Will Harold help with that relaunch — or will he find himself drawn into the mystery of this strange planet? Dive on PlayStation 5, Xbox X/S and PC.
