picton harbour boat tours

Great 90 minute boat tour on a very stable pontoon boat.

We saw the sign on the harbour front at the back of the Picton Harbour Motel. Called Mike - one of the two captains - really helpful. Booked for the next day. We showed up but the other party of 3 had got the wrong day. Our best luck as we had the boat all to ourselves, with Mike giving us great commentary. The tour lasts about 90 minutes and is really great value at $47 each. It was great to see the harbour from a different viewpoint and we learnt so much from Mike. Would highly recommend this tour. Very safe too. Only seats 5 people plus the skipper.

We booked this tour on the morning of - Mike Roy, one of the two captains, could not have been more wonderful. He is alife-long visitor/resident of this area and knows everyone and seemingly everything about the Lake and the area. The tour was on a pontoon "party boat" and it was perfect. We spent 90 minutes cruising the bay, hearing about the history & geology of the region, as well as some of the local landmarks. Picton Harbor is a gem & this was a fascinating way to spend the morning. I highly recommend it.

Spur of the moment decision prompted us to call from the dock. Larry was there in 15 minutes and we had an enjoyable and informative 1.5 hour tour of Picton bay. Many facts and tales of the past plus the ongoing industries of today. Lots of local suggestions and a truly enjoyable trip. Larry was warm & fun.

A great little tour..you will learn so much about the picton harbour and the activities in the bay... Captain Larry kept us entertained with stories and gave us great suggestions for touring the County... fun! We learned about the industries on the bay, the great homes. The birdlife and fishing... something for everyone!

Our boat captain was Larry. He is a nice guy but I didn’t really like his extremely disparaging remarks about Canada’s former Prime Minister Sir John A MacDonald. Did we really need to “go there” and hear how because of him this whole area hates Canada? Otherwise, the trip was good enough. Really pleasant weather.

Thank you, Captain Mike, for a nice and lovely stroll on the lake today and sharing wirh us all of the hisrory of the surounding ! 😊☀️

Beautiful Boat Tour in PEC

My friends and I went on a tour with Captain Mike. He did an amazing job explaining the history of the harbour. The tour was a lot fun and a great way to end our long weekend getaway in the county! Big thank you to Captain Mike and Captain Larry for helping us plan our trip and for recommending great restaurants and wineries in the area.

We had a wonderful experience with Captain Larry! It was my husbands 40th birthday weekend and it was our first time in Picton. Captain Larry went out of his way to help me plan an AMAZING weekend. He directed me to wonderful restaurants nearby (we needed dog friendly so he personally called in the area to help me out) as well as even taking us on his beautiful, antique boat as to make the day that much more special. Thank you Captain Larry for all your help!

We had a great time on the water with Captain Mike. He was relaxed and happy with the children and highly informative. I would highly recommend this tour!!!!

My friends and I took the tour on a lovely warm afternoon in Picton. The rental is captained , so all you have to do is sit back and enjoy the water and views. It's a very short walk from Main Street, located just behind the Harbour View Inn.

Had such enjoyable excursion with Captain Mike on the pootoon tour of Picton Harbour and bay. He is very informative and friendly-whole family loved the adventure!

We all love Captain Mike and are glad he is on the team. Thank you Larry R

My husband and I were so happy to have taken this tour. Captain Larry was funny, knowledgable and friendly. You get a great history lesson, see beautiful sights and learn about the recreational and commercial boating industry. It was not at all boring! Loved it and recommend d it most highly --- even to residents!

Thank you for your kind words. It was a pleasure meeting you and having you on board!

20 Things to do in Picton

View of Picton Harbour from the Marlborough Sounds

Things to do in Picton, New Zealand

Picton is most famous for its big port and is home to the Cook Strait Ferries.   It is the jumping off point for the ferries between Picton and Wellington and the unofficial capital of the Marlborough Sounds.

Anyone road tripping between the North and South Island must take a ferry, which may leave you wondering “What to do in Picton while waiting for the ferry”.  But it is also a great place to base yourself while exploring the Marlborough Sounds, full of beautiful coves, bays, tracks and wildlife.

Picton Accommodation

Picton is not a huge town but it does have a range of accommodation given that it is a port town.  You may consider staying close to the Picton township if you have a very late or early ferry, or why not check out a tranquil spot in the Marlborough Sounds if you have some time up your sleeve.  Right lets check out where to stay in Picton, New Zealand.

How to get to Picton

Picton ferry.

If you want to drive between the North and South Island, you have to go through Picton.  It is the start or end point for the Cook Strait Ferry

There two ferry companies , the Interislander Ferry and the Bluebridge Ferry, run a passenger and freight service as well as a car ferry (all in one).  You can book your vehicle onto the ferry to take it between the North Island and the South Island and it is highly recommended to book in advance, especially over the holiday season.

The Picton to Wellington Ferry will take approximately three hours and both companies run similar style services.  Both have cabins you can hire for the sailings and the Interislander often has a few more passenger areas, but they are much of a muchness.  Just choose the time and price that suits you best.

Driving to Picton

Approximate driving times to Picton include

  • Christchurch to Picton: 4½ hours (although there can still be significant delays in Kaikoura.  Check the NZTA trip planner for planned roadworks, some are adding an hour to your drive time so plan to arrive in Picton early)
  • Kaikoura to Picton: 2 hours but see above
  • Nelson to Picton: 1 hour 50 mins
  • Blenheim to Picton: 25 mins

The Picton Ferry Terminal is located at the end of Lagoon Road.  There is an NPD fuel station here which is a good place to fill up before you hit the chaotic Wellington City streets when you arrive.

Train from Picton to Christchurch

Have you ever considered a more luxurious and relaxing way to travel?  Why not try the Christchurch and Picton train (and return of course)  The Coastal Pacific train journey takes 5.5 hours and connects with the Interisland Ferry.

It is a relaxing way to travel and has wide windows, perfect for views of the Kaikoura Coastline.  You can book your train to Picton here

Flights to Picton

The Picton Airport is small, but its close proximity to the capital means that Picton to Wellington flights are extremely efficient, taking only 30 minutes.

You can fly with Sounds Air, with flights starting from $59, which can be cheaper and faster than taking the Cook Strait Ferry.

Short Activities while waiting for the Interisland Ferry in Picton, New Zealand

Picton playgrounds, picton waterfront playground: the pirate ship.

Right on the waterfront, overlooking the boats, you will find a large childrens playground, complete with splash pad and a huge pirate ship.  This is a great playground for all ages, with a smaller play area for toddlers, or lots of climbing and rope swing activities for the older kids.  A great place to burn off steam before jumping on the Cook Strait ferry.

In the summer, make sure you bring the kids togs or a change of clothes as there is a great splash pad to cool off in.  Jump on the water cushions and play in the streams of water.  Even the adults might love to take their jandals off on a hot day.

For kids, this will be one of the best Picton attractions.

picton harbour boat tours

Waikawa Bay Playground

If you are looking for somewhere more tranquil, head 5km around to Waikawa Bay and have a picnic on the shore.  There is a smaller playground here and a grassy spot for a picnic, as well as a bbq right overlooking the water.  Those who love to spot boats will enjoy watching locals sail to the Waikawa Marina.  Playgrounds are the best things to do in Picton with kids!

Take a walk in the Kaipupu Wildlife Sanctuary

The Kaipupu Wildlife Sanctuary has a beautiful 60-80 minute walk on this island peninsula and is only accessible by boat.  Fortunately Beachcomber Cruises provide water taxi access right from the waterfront.  It only takes 10 minutes to reach the Kaipupu Wildlife Sanctuary by boat and they can pick you up from the jetty about 2 hours later.

There is a lovely viewpoint and picnic table on the island which is perfect for lunch, and there you will also find a Toyota Kiwi Guardians Medal post (where kids can apply for a medal for exploring the outdoors)

Family look at the native birds at the Kaipupu Wildlife Sanctuary, Picton, NZ

Visit Motuara Bird Sanctuary

Beachcomber Cruises run a 4½ tour to the Motuara Bird Sanctuary, a predator free island near the very tip of the Marlborough Sounds.  Bird lovers will have a ball, admiring the beautiful native birds who live here.  You have about an hour on the island to explore and walk up the viewpoint, just 800m and enjoy the views over Ship Cove.

Click here for the latest prices and times for the Motuara Bird Sanctuary Tour

Take a scenic flight

There is no better way to appreciate the expanse of the Marlborough Sounds than to take a scenic flight over this beautiful landscape.  Leaving from Picton Airport, flights range from 20-45 minutes.  Take a helicopter flight with Coast to Coast Helicopters or small passenger plane with Pelorus Air (flights starting from $99)

Take a Picture Perfect Photo from the Picton Lookout

Nip just up the hill from Picton (on Queen Charlotte Drive towards Havelock and Nelson) and you will find a spectacular Picton viewpoint.  The Picton Lookout has vast views over the township and is a great vantage point to watch the ferries and boats zip in and out of the Picton Harbour.

The best thing is, no walking here, just a few minutes drive from the Picton Ferry.

Marlborough Sounds view of Picton Ferry from PIcton Viewpoint

Go for a swim in the Marlborough Sounds

Just a short drive will take you to some great swimming locations.  On a hot day, if you arrive too early at the ferry, take a trip to one of these pretty bays for a cool off.

Ngakuta Bay

Just an 18 minute windy scenic drive from Picton, you will pass the Picton Harbour Lookout and some great vantage points over the Marlborough Sounds.  Ngakuta Bay is a popular spot for baches (holiday homes) and has a lovely sandy spot for kids to play and beautiful clear water.

Momorangi Bay

Momorangi is another popular holiday spot (just 5 minutes on from Ngakuta) and has a DOC campsite right near the bay.  A similar sheltered spot to Ngakuta Bay, with the added bonus of the Momorangi Store for ice creams and treats.

Anakiwa Bay

Anakiwa is a 35 minute drive from Picton (or you would pass it when driving from Havelock/Nelson to Picton) and is another great spot to swim or kayak.  It is at the beginning of the Queen Charlotte Track (a 3-4 day walk) and there is a lovely 1 hour return walk to Davies Bay here.  It is a great place for a picnic especially if you were coming from the Nelson/Tasman region.

Check out a Picton Museum

Looking for things to do in Picton on a rainy day, then head indoors to the Picton Heritage and Whaling Museum, right across from the playground or the Edwin Fox Ship and Visitor Centre on the Dunbar Wharf.

The Picton Heritage and Whaling Museum will help you understand the life of a whaler, and about the families and history of Picton.

Picton Walks

There are a number of short walks around Picton that are a great way to explore the area and see some beautiful views.  Check out a few of the best Picton walking tracks below.

Picton Waterfront:  While not a walking track, its a lovely place to stroll and younger ones with scooters and balance bikes will enjoy the flat surface

Tirohanga Track, Picton:  A beautiful bush track, steeply climbing through native bush to a Hilltop Viewpoint over Picton.  This Picton walk takes about 45 minutes one way and is one of the best walking tracks Picton has to offer.

Lower Bobs Bay Walk: An easy walk from Picton Township, walking over the Coathanger bridge to Bobs Bay.  The walk runs along the bay and there are some great spots to swim.  It is only 1km each way, but there are some steep dropoffs in places to you will need to watch children closely.

Snout Track, Picton: A 3-4 hour hike out to the headland, with beautiful views over the Marlborough Sounds.  It can get quite muddy at times, so decent footwear is advised.  This track leaves from Victoria Domain.  You can drive there, or walk there via the Lower Bobs Bay Walk.

Picton Movie Theatre

Not usually on your list of things to explore, however if you have had a ferry sailing cancelled due to bad weather, I’m guessing you won’t want to be going outside.  The Picton Cinema has three theatres and shows all the latest feature films.

It is located right next to the EcoWorld Aquarium.

Half Day and Full Day Trips from Picton

Take a walk on the queen charlotte track.

The Queen Charlotte Track is a 3-4 day multi day hike, however you can choose to do a section of the walk and jet in and out via water taxi.  It is one of my favourite Picton hikes and I love how you can break it up and do whatever section you like.   A popular section of the track is from Ship Cove to Furneaux Lodge.  This is a 15km walk, taking 5-6 hours with the added bonus of exquisite dining options at Furneaux Lodge on arrival.

A walk on the Queen Charlotte Track is one of the top things to do in Picton, so put this on your Picton Must Do list!

Your captain will provide great commentary about the history and interesting facts of the region while you explore bays that are almost untouched.

The 15 best things to do in Picton – The heart of the Marlborough Sounds

Uncover the best things to do in Picton with the help of this diverse guide.

Picton is located on New Zealand’s South Island. This charming little seaside town is one of the country’s hidden gems, and although it’s only home to around 4,000 people – you’ll find some incredible spots here.

Many people start their journey by taking the car ferry from Wellington to Picton , as they travel from the North Island to the South. Of course, it’s also possible to do the same in reverse, as you start your South Island adventure.

Or perhaps you’re sticking to the South Island and exploring by car or train? If you’ve factored a stop at Picton (and the Marlborough Sounds), congratulations — you’ve made a great decision!

Whether you’re looking to spot some wildlife, do a bit of hiking, or admire the beautiful scenery – you won’t run out of things to do here.

When you book through our links, you’ll often get a discount and we may earn a commission. Your support also allows us to run our Facebook communities and create helpful content at no cost to you. Thank you!

The Top Things to Do in Picton

To help you make the most out of your visit to Picton we’ve hand-selected the top things to do there.

You can head along the famous Queen Charlotte Track, visit Kaipupu Wildlife Sanctuary, or visit the Edwin Fox Museum. Whatever your preference, you’re sure to find some awesome activities to your liking.

Here are the best things to do in Picton…

1. Walk or Cycle the Queen Charlotte Track

The Queen Charlotte Track is one of the most popular attractions in the area — for good reason too, it’s beautiful.

At 73.5km (45 miles) long, and offering breathtaking views of the coast, Marlborough Sounds, and native forest, we highly recommend you enjoy at least part of the track.

You can either hike the track or you can take a bicycle. It’s completely up to you how you tackle it.

To complete the whole track you’re looking at 3-5 days. Or you can choose to just do part of it as a day hike/cycle.

If you’re looking to experience the beauty of this area but don’t want to hike over 70km, then you can walk from Furneaux Lodge to Punga Cove (where you can stay the night, should you choose).

This part of the Queen Charlotte Track is around 13km (8 miles) long and will take you between 3 and 4.5 hours to complete.

Enjoy a Cruise

2. go on a cruise of the marlborough sounds.

If you’re looking for the best things to do in Picton, then a cruise has to be on your list!

The Marlborough Sounds are one of New Zealand’s most stunning attractions.

This collection of sunken valleys filled with water from the Pacific Ocean, resulting in what is now three main bodies of water. These are Kenepuru, Pelorus, and Queen Charlotte Sounds.

One of the best ways to see this beautiful area is by heading out on a cruise of Marlborough Sounds and Ship Cove. This way you’ll get to see the true beauty of the area, and visit a place named by Captain Cook himself.

If you’re a fan of seafood, then you can also head out on a cruise departing from Picton, that comes complete with fresh, locally grown/caught seafood.

3. Check Out a Dolphin-Watching Cruise (& Swim With Them too!)

Heading out on a dolphin-watching cruise is without a doubt one of the best things to do in Picton.

The Marlborough Sounds are one of the best places to spot dolphins in New Zealand, so don’t miss out on this opportunity.

On these cruises, you’ll have the chance to spot a variety of dolphin species including bottlenose, common, dusky, and the rare hector’s dolphin. There’s also a chance of seeing orca and other whales.

Should you wish, it’s even possible to swim with these incredible animals in their natural habitat.

4. Join the Mail Boat Cruise of Queen Charlotte Sound

Now, this may seem like a weird one but it’s honestly one of the best things to do in the region.

Climb aboard New Zealand’s official rural post-delivery service, and see the skipper deliver parcels and mail to local residents.

As you cruise around Queen Charlotte Sound, you’ll get to learn all about its history and the people that live here.

It’s also the perfect opportunity to spot marine mammals, including a variety of dolphin species and fur seals.

So, make sure you head out on this mail boat cruise — it’s a wonderful way to enjoy the jaw-dropping scenery whilst gaining a bit of local insight.

5. Visit Kaipupu Wildlife Sanctuary

If you’re a nature lover, you can’t leave this area without paying a visit to the Kaipupu Wildlife Sanctuary .

This community project is situated on an island in Picton Harbour. It aims to restore 40 hectares of land whilst providing visitors with awesome wildlife spotting opportunities.

There, you’ll get to see a range of native flora and fauna including little penguin/kororā , raukawa geckos, and New Zealand fur seals.

The Kaipupu Wildlife Sanctuary also has a 2.7km circular trail that will take you through native bush, forest, and the restoration zone.

The trip out to the island takes just 10 minutes by boat, and although entrance to the island is free we highly recommend donating!

Did you know? You can reach Kaipupu Island by private boat, water taxi or kayak.

6. Head to Motuara Island Bird Sanctuary

The Motuara Island Bird Sanctuary is the place to go if you’re a keen birdwatcher.

The island is predator-free and is home to rare birds including the king shag, and the Okarito brown kiwi. Other native bird species include the saddleback, little blue penguin, yellow-crowned parakeets, and the bellbird.

Motuara Island also has a great walking trail. It takes you past watering holes and to a lookout that offers spectacular views of the sounds.

There are a couple of tours that run from Picton to the Motuara Island Bird Sanctuary. They also combine this awesome place with dolphin cruises and a visit to Ship Cove .

7. Go on a Guided Sea Kayaking Tour

Going on a guided sea kayak tour from Picton is one of the best ways to explore the incredible Queen Charlotte Sound.

An expert guide will take you to remote beaches and sheltered coves, and will teach you all about Marlborough Sound’s history.

As you explore this area on a kayak make sure you look out for wildlife too. If you’re lucky you might spot dolphins, fur seals, little blue penguins and eagle rays.

We also love that these tours are run with small groups as it makes for a more personal (and peaceful) experience.

8. Hike the Tirohanga Track

The Tirohanga Track is one of the most popular hikes in Picton.

Though it’s a relatively a short hike, it leads up to a hilltop lookout which rewards with incredible views of the town and Waikawa.

Although part of the hike is pretty steep, we wouldn’t consider it to be too challenging.

To get to the summit and then back down, you’ll need to allow yourself between 1-2 hours for this trail.

9. Treat Yourself to a Wine Tour

The Marlborough Region is famous for its wine, so what better activity could you choose than to head out on a wine tour?

Enjoy travelling from winery to winery, sampling the wines that the region is so well known for.

Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir, Riesling Varietals, and Sauvignon Blanc — you’ll have the chance to sample them all.

Throughout these tours, you’ll get to learn all about New Zealand’s wines and see the beautiful landscapes the grapes are grown in.

Cheers to that!

10. Visit the Edwin Fox Museum

The Edwin Fox Ship and Visitor Centre is a great place for families to visit and those with a passion for history.

There, you’ll get to see the incredible Edwin Fox Ship which has been preserved on-site for the past 30 years.

This ship has a pretty incredible history as it was the last surviving ship that took convicts to Australia, and it’s the last Crimea war troop carrier made of wood.

Not only that, but it’s the oldest merchant ship in the world. Pretty impressive, right?

During your time there you’ll get to watch a documentary about the ship, and view plenty of intriguing artefacts in the museum.

11. Enjoy the Queen Charlotte Drive

Driving along Queen Charlotte Drive is an experience in itself (from Picton to Havelock and back).

Throughout this drive, you’ll enjoy From there, you’ll enjoy spectacular views of Marlborough Sounds — so don’t forget your camera.

We recommend stopping in at the Cullen Point lookout whilst you’re over the Havelock side and also the Picton Harbour Lookout.

If you can head to either of these at sunrise or sunset, that’s even better!

What’s more, the Piction Harbour Lookout is a great spot tick off whilst you’re waiting for the Picton ferry as it’s only a couple of minutes’ drive away.

12. Pick up some delicious food

Picton is home to a number of great cafes, eateries and bakeries, so stopping by one for a bite to eat is a must-do.

The following are all great tried-and-tested choices in town…

  • Toastie Picton
  • Seumus’ Irish Bar
  • Cortado Restaurant & Bar
  • Picton Village Bakkerij
  • SCOOP ice cream

13. Entertain the kids

Though Picton mightn’t come to mind as one of the most well-known NZ spots to take your kids , there is plenty on offer for families.

Down by the waterfront, you’ll find a mini golf course, a ride-on model train track and a great playground.

The harbor is also a great place to feed the ducks and to go for a dip.

And, you like the idea of staying a bit longer, the campground is well-set up for families, providing the relaxed holiday that Kiwi memories are made of.

14. Shop the local souvenir shops

We were surprised to find that Picton has some of the very best souvenir shops in all of Aotearoa New Zealand!

With a ride range of tasteful, artsy mementos, Picton is one of the best places to collect something to remember your travels.

We particularly recommend:

  • Seaside Gems, Picton
  • Every Little Thing, Picton
  • The Choice Gallery, Picton

15. Enjoy a day trip to Havelock or Blenheim

The small town of Havelock is just a 45-minute drive from Picton (along the Queen Charlotte Drive) and is well worth the visit.

This town is known for having the best mussels in New Zealand. So if you’re a seafood fan, this is a must.

Some of the most popular spots to taste these delicacies include The Mussel Pot and Mills Bay Mussels Tasting & Eatery .

Whilst you’re in town, you’ll also want to visit the Pelorus River, walk the Cullen Point Tracks, and explore the local art galleries.

If you’re looking for an adventure, you can even kayak to one of the filming locations used in The Hobbit!

A man passing by the Mussels Pot while a red car park in front of it in Havlock Town.

This beautiful town has plenty to offer for travellers.

Whether you’re looking for a relaxing getaway or an action-packed weekend, there are so many awesome things to do in Picton.

New Zealand Cruise- Picton Boat Cruise to Queen Charlotte Track

Picton is a harbor village that serves as the New Zealand’s south island ferry terminal. It is also the start of the Queen Charlotte hiking track. This was the one port that we had not scheduled a tour. One of the main excursions is taking the vintage train to the Marlborough Flyer Wine region. But since we had just done a biking wine tour we skip this tour.

Booking a tour at the I-Site

We headed to the Picton I-Site information booth and arrived prior to them opening. We decided on two options: sea kayaking or taking a boat to the start of Queen Charlotte track. Mr Travelmista was not thrilled with the sea kayaking. We have done this before in Ketchikan AK. So we opted to take the boat to Queen Charlotte track. In hopes that we could hike a small portion. We were able to book the tour at the information booth for $120 USD. The sea kayaking was a tad more expensive.

Hiking out to Bobs Bay

Before the boat left we had some time to explore Picton. But because we had arrived early all the shops were closed. We headed over the big bridge to the Marina and took the hiking trail to Bobs Bay. By the time we made it to Bobs Bay, it was time to turn around and hurry back to the marina. Bobs Bay looks like a nice swimming beach with bathroom facilities but our visit was very short.

Boat Ride to start of Queen Charlotte Track

When we made it back to the Marina the boat was already boarding. Even through the boat had an upstairs, it was already filled by the time we made it back. We ended up with the last seat inside near the driver. The ride out to Ships Cove was long and while the scenery was nice. It was definitely not the adventurous trip. By the time we made it the Capt. Cook Monument at Ships Cove the Ship’s captain only gave us 20 mins to explore. He also told us not to hike Queen Charlotte Track. This was a major disappointment as it was whole reason we want to take the boat out to see what the track was like. We used the bathroom facilities took our shoes off in the bay and took some pictures. By this time it was time to get back on the boat.

Boat Ride back to Picton

This time we decided to arrive early and were able to sit on the back of the boat. The ride back was the only saving grace for this excursion. Half way back, Dolphins started to follow us and do tricks in the water. It was the best thing about the excursion. It was a disappointment and we had wished we had more time to explore the track. Next time we will book ahead and do the sea kayaking.

Exploring Picton

Once we were back in Picton the downtown area was in full swing. The had a very nice local handmade market near the Marina. Make sure to bring cash as some of these places don’t take credit cards. We did some gift shopping and then toured the downtown areas shops on High St.

Picton Toilets

Now this is a funny thing to write about but make sure you check out the high tech public toilets near the Marina. We had a good laugh at music playing once the door closed. For public toilets they were very nice.

Park near I-Site

As we were heading back to the ship, we walked behind the i-site visitor center they had a cute kids train ride, splash pad and sailboat pond. I couldn’t believe there was no line for the train and asked if adults could ride. I paid my $.50 and jumped on the next train. This was a fun cheap thing to do for adults or kids. The kids could spend hours playing in the park.

People in Picton

The people in Picton were extremely nice. Everyone went out of there way to make you feel welcome. As we were getting off the cruise ship they pinned all the women as small flower boutique. You can see it in the pictures. This was to let everyone know you were a visitor from the cruise ship. We have cruised all over the world and have never been given flowers. It was a very nice touch for the city of Picton.
