The 38 Essential Mumbai Restaurants

Crab masala at a coastal Maharashtrian restaurant, chaat at a street stall popular with Bollywood stars, chai at the city’s most popular Irani cafes, kebabs at a century-old stalwart, and more of Mumbai’s best meals

Mumbai doesn’t have the same reputation as a food city compared to Delhi or Kolkata. But the city is full of great meals — you just need to know where to look. Around the Fort and Colaba area, the oldest part of Mumbai at the southern tip, you’ll find a bunch of the marquee, century-old establishments that have survived the test of time where you can dive into berry pulao, bun maska, and cups of Irani chai. For a more contemporary look at dining, head to Bandra, the cosmopolitan neighborhood in the central part of the city. To sample the best of Maharashtrian food, the cuisine of the state surrounding Mumbai, head to Dadar, where you can find khanavals (family-owned canteens that serve no-nonsense, homestyle food) and feast on sabudana vadas, thalipeeth, vada pav, and semolina-crusted fish.

It is impossible to talk about food in Mumbai without a mention of the wealth gap in the city. Over 10 million people live in the slums, while the city also hosts the country’s largest number of billionaires . The dining culture in the city reflects this disparity; while most restaurants are quick and affordable for the average Mumbaikar, over the past decade, the city has welcomed several restaurants catering to the super rich (which tend to have a shelf life of under two years, when they inevitably get replaced by trendier options). Social media has also brought in food trends from the West that are aspirational to Indians for whom foreign travel is not a possibility.

Most of the restaurants on this list have maintained their quality and fanbases for years, proof that the city respects consistency more than fads. Though you might have to spend a little effort to try a few of Mumbai’s best meals, India’s city of dreams rewards struggle.

Sumedh Natu is a director, producer, and writer who created the food show Menu Please on the Netflix India YouTube channel. He has lived in Mumbai for a decade and documented food all over India.

Mumbai has always lacked restaurants serving food from the northeastern state of Nagaland, home to several Indigenous tribes, famous for foraging for ingredients, smoking meats, and fermenting items to increase their shelf life. At Naga Belly, tribal cooking takes the front seat. The restaurant serves both traditional Naga staples and other dishes with Naga twists. Start with chicken wings cooked with axone (fermented soy bean paste) and gahlo (rice porridge with wild herbs). Once your stomach is decently warmed up, go for pork bhujia (pork first boiled and then fried to a crisp), smoked pork with anishi (taro leaves), and black rice. Clarify your spice tolerance before ordering, and make sure you call to reserve a table in the small space.

Suraj Lama Momos

Mumbai is not known for its momos, the Tibetan/Nepali dumplings that are a recent addition to India’s street food scene, but Suraj Lama might just change that. The restaurant’s story is a classic rags-to-riches Bollywood movie. What started off as a small cart is now a flourishing outlet with a healthy queue outside its door. The default order is always steamed chicken momos, but try one of the raunchier variations like chicken cheese pahadi tandoori for a more indulgent taste.

Nav Chaitanya

Nav Chaitanya is the latest addition to the Chaitanya family, after restaurants in the town of Malvan and the Dadar neighborhood of Mumbai. Chef Surekha Walke’s home recipes are the best way to experience traditional Malvani food, which represents the flavors of the southern Maharashtrian coastline. At one point, Walke even imported water from her hometown (about 10 hours from Mumbai), to make sure the restaurant matched the area’s original flavors. Order tisrya bhujane (clams stir fried with fresh coconut and shallots), crab masala, gaboli fry (fried fish roe), and kombdi vade (chicken curry with fried rice and millet bread) for the table. If you’re going by yourself, go for the Bombay duck rice plate. Be ready to queue up for at least an hour on Sundays.

A thali consisting of a fried dish, flatbreads, and various stewy and saucy dishes.

Ram & Shyam Chaat

It’s really hard to rank chaat in a city like Mumbai, where arguments over the snacks can strain family ties. When in doubt, hit the Ram & Shyam stall, which may look tiny but has served every imaginable star from Bollywood. Order dahi puri (fried flour dumplings generously doused with yogurt and tamarind chutney), bhel (puffed rice mixed with sweet and spicy chutneys), and pani puri (dumplings filled with mashed potatoes and a mix of sweet and spicy water). The high price point compared to most other places in Mumbai reflects the quality of the stall. Eat a sukha (dry) puri to end your meal for good luck.

The story of the Sindhis is one of the several tragic stories of immigration caused by the partition of India. Once living in a part of the province of Sindh, now in Pakistan, a lot of migrants were forced to find homes in Mumbai. Sindhful may have an extensive menu of North Indian and Chinese dishes, but its heart lies in traditional Sindhi classics. Arbi tuk is made by deep-frying colocasia root (taro) coated with spices, while dal pakwan is a hearty preparation of lentils served with crispy bread. Sindhi meat preparations are slow-cooked and browned meticulously; case in point: the Sindhi mutton curry, an assured hit at the table.

Bombay Salad Company

Bombay Salad Co. has made eating healthy feel cool since it opened in 2014, a great achievement given all its neighbors are equally passionate about greasy indulgence. The salad bar, started by Karishma Dalal, was one of the first in the country. Everyone has a personal favorite on the menu by now, but you can also customize your own from a variety of raw vegetables and ingredients, most of which are local. The Red Frenchman and Protein Overload are no-brainers.

Izumi started as a living room-sized joint in the heart of Bandra before evolving into a sophisticated restaurant with a loyal crowd of regulars. Chef Nooresha Kably spent time in Tokyo and Yokohama honing her sushi and ramen skills before delighting patrons in Mumbai longing for Japanese food. Order the chutoro sashimi, tempura shrimp with yuzu mayo roll, and kimchi pork gyoza, and bully your dining companions into splitting a bowl of tonkotsu ramen. Reservations are recommended.

La Loca Maria

La Loca Maria has successfully imported the joy of tapas dining to Mumbai. Chef Manuel Olveira Seller’s relocated restaurant packs in flavors from several Spanish-speaking countries in simple and well-executed plates. The charred octopus, palm heart ceviche, and pork al pastor tacos are great places to start, while the lightly smoked salmon and sous vide chicken sit in stark contrast to the heavily seasoned proteins usually offered in India.

The second restaurant by Hunger Inc., the restaurant group owned by Sameer Seth and Yash Bhanage of Bombay Canteen fame, was a pleasant surprise to local diners, showcasing a menu of Goan and Portuguese food. It has since shown up on every reasonable list of the best restaurants in Mumbai. Chef Hussain Shahzad’s creative touch gleams all over O Pedro’s signatures. Choose between a mushroom or sea bass ceviche to start your meal. Follow that up with some roasted bone marrow, and end with a portion of the roasted pork ard maas (bone-in meat). If you’re going around Easter or Christmas, expect to be tempted by a whole roasted suckling pig, an experience that’s tough to find even in Goa anymore.

For any Thai cravings in Mumbai, look to chef Seefah Ketchaiyo, whose namesake restaurant (a joint venture with her husband, chef Karan Bane) is influenced by her stints cooking in both Thailand and China. Order the papaya salad, duck rice, Isan grilled pork, and Thai curry with crispy roti. The restaurant also does an array of Japanese food, in case you need some udon or sashimi. If chef Ketchaiyo’s in the kitchen, ask if she’s feeling nice enough to make your table a Thai omelette stuffed with chicken or pork, an off-menu speciality.

One of Mumbai’s rites of passage is identifying a dive bar that you can treat as a second home. Yacht (pronounced “ya-chet” by most locals in Bandra) is one of those places where you can expect to create several core memories. The alcohol is cheap, always ordered by the quarter (250 milliliters) or by the bottle. Go for the all-time hits of dive bar snacks to go with your drink: chicken lollipops, cauliflower or chicken manchurian, and mixed fried rice. The crowd is always eclectic, including old-timers, college kids, jaded screenwriters, and ranting lawyers. You don’t choose your dive bar; it chooses you.

Guru Kripa is a textbook restaurant designed to host large groups of joint families. There’s something for everyone: chaat, a full thali meal, sweets, milkshakes, and entrees. Order samosas, vegetable sandwiches topped with grated cheese, dal pakwan, and any dessert that piques your fancy (the jalebis and fruit custard are perfect starting points, in case you’re overwhelmed).

Cafe Irani Chaii

Discussions about Irani cafes in Mumbai are often dominated by legacy names like Britannia and Excelsior that have been around in the city for decades. Cafe Irani Chaii is a recent addition to the slowly dwindling list of these eccentric restaurants, yet it feels like the place has been around for at least a century. Warm up your stomach with a cup of chai, along with some brun maska (hard bread smothered with butter), keema fry (minced lamb fried with masalas), and mutton paya (lamb trotter) soup. Cheeky signs — like the one that reads, “No flirting with the cashier” — are all part of the decor.

Cafe Madras

Cafe Madras opens at 7 a.m. and is promptly packed by 7:01. It’s been a landmark in Matunga for over 80 years. Dive straight in with an order of ghee roast masala dosa topped with white butter. Split a portion of idlis (fermented rice flour cakes) dunked in ghee, chutney, and podi. Finish your meal with frothy filter coffee. Expect to share tables and leave as soon you’re done eating, unless you want to risk annoyed glares from the queue outside.

A large dosa with sauces.

It’s hard to miss the mob of disgruntled Maharashtrians negotiating a table outside Aaswad, the most popular spot in Dadar to grab traditional, vegetarian Marathi food. Sharing tables with strangers is very common and hanging around after your meal is highly discouraged. Have varan bhaat (lightly sweetened, homestyle lentils with rice), thalipeeth (roasted, gluten-free, hand-stretched flatbreads) gleaming with butter, and shrikhand puri (fried bread with a dessert made of strained yogurt).

A lunch tray including thalipeeth and various stewy dishes.

Prakash shakahari upahar kendra.

Prakash is where most Marathi grandmothers will come to eat food they’re already masters at making, which is a mark of how good it is. Not ordering a plate of sabudana vadas (tapioca pearl fritters) is sacrilege. Pair them with pithla bhakri (gram flour curry with jowar bread), kothimbir wadi (fried coriander cakes), and solkadhi (a sweet and spicy drink of coconut milk soured with kokum). Wash it all down with multiple cups of tea. Note: Curtness from the staff is actually a sign of loving hospitality at Prakash.

Squares of gram flour patties dotted with vegetables.

Ashok Vada Pav

There isn’t another dish that screams Mumbai as much as the vada pav: It’s available in every corner of the city, extremely cheap, and fast to eat. A mashed potato patty, hand-mixed with masalas, is drenched in gram flour batter and sandwiched in a pao, one of the breads the Portuguese introduced to India. A small stall outside of Kirti College does one of the best versions of the dish. There’s always a line, the proprietor is ever-grumpy, and the college supplies an inexhaustible number of students to make sure every last vada pav is consumed. Ask for extra tamarind chutney and chura (fried gram flour batter bits).

The Bombay Canteen

Over the past decade, the Bombay Canteen has been one of the most influential modern Indian restaurants in the country. The restaurant team visits remote parts of India for culinary research, incorporates modern techniques, and creates seasonal menus that concentrate on reimagined regional Indian specialities. While the restaurant is currently run by chef Hussain Shahzad (an alum of Eleven Madison Park), it has seen leadership from Thomas Zacharias and the late Floyd Cardoz, who both strongly shaped the culinary philosophy of the place. Enjoy classics like the eggs Kejriwal (a spicy fried egg dish born out of the Willingdon Sports Club), prawns ali-yolio, and seasonal specialities like sev puri topped with raw sea bass or pork belly thukpa. Reservations are recommended, especially on weekends.

Two crisps topped with chopped ingredients.

Maaslli is a great place to try classic dishes of the Gaud Saraswat Brahmin, a Maharashtrian community that really knows their way around fish. Try the mori ghee roast (shark in a hot and sweet roasted masala paste), bangda tirfal curry (mackerel and teppal curry), and some prawn biryani. Ask for the GSB specials on the menu, and check out the kharvas (pudding the consistency of panna cotta made from colostrum) for dessert. Maaslli heralds a wave of change in family-friendly dining in Mumbai, as more restaurateurs focus within the cuisine of a single community rather than serving pan-Indian menus.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Maaslli Saraswat and GSB Speciality (@maaslli)

Martand Misal

Many Maharashtrians will concede the city isn’t the best place to get misal, the spicy, one-pot breakfast of moth beans served with bread and a ton of condiments. Martand does a solid version, guaranteed to make one break into sweats. Ignore the cheese and butter fry versions, and go for the classic special misal if it’s your first time. Note: If your spice tolerance is low, ordering buttermilk or solkadhi with the misal really helps battle the heat.

Masque Restaurant

Masque has been a polarizing place since it cemented itself in Mumbai’s fine dining landscape, disrupting contemporary Indian dining. Chef Varun Totlani currently runs the kitchen, taking over the reins after the departure of founding chef Prateek Sadhu. Reserve well in advance to sample the 10-course tasting menu, seasonal and heavy in its use of local ingredients. You can also get in touch for a seat at the Masque Lab, the restaurant research and development space, where diners who don’t mind a more experimental meal can taste dishes that are still works in progress.

A fish filet on a plank topped with swirls of sauce.

Bombay Sweet Shop

Bombay Sweet Shop is like if Willy Wonka’s factory had a base in India. Crossing traditional Indian mithai confectionery with modern flavors, chef Girish Nayak has created marvels like a Kaapi Paak (a coffee-flavored version of Mysore’s iconic ghee and gram flour sweet), seasonal ghevar strawberry tarts, and fudge made with Parle-G biscuits. Nostalgia drifts like a theme through a ton of Bombay Sweet Shop creations. If the sugar rush is overwhelming, order a portion of spicy kachoris to give your taste buds a break.

The breakfast joint of choice of legendary author Saadat Hasan Manto, Sarvi is a Nagpada institution. Everyone visits to have seekh kebabs, but if you’re feeling adventurous, sample the offal dishes, especially the brain masala and tongue masala fry. It’s worth ordering a second portion of the caramel custard too. If you get friendly with the older waiters, they’ll cinematically narrate stories of Mumbai’s underworld and point out Manto’s favorite table.

Swati Snacks

Swati Snacks popularized homestyle, vegetarian, Gujarati snacks in Mumbai. Minakshi Jhaveri’s tiny restaurant has served the who’s who of the city and several foreign celebrities. Look for restaurant favorite suva panki, a pancake made with rice flour, steamed between banana leaves and flavored with dill. The fada khichdi is a homely preparation of broken wheat and lentils, guaranteed to heal your stomach. Chug a glass of sugar cane juice along with your food.

A green-tinted pancake in a banana leaf, served with chutney.

Noor Mohammadi

The nalli nihari — a dish Muslims traditionally enjoy after the first namaz (prayer) — at Noor Mohammadi is a rich, gelatinous, slow-cooked stew of buff (water buffalo) complete with chunks of bone marrow floating in the gravy; order a bowl with thick, buttery tandoori rotis and you’re set for dinner. The restaurant, currently owned by Raashid Abdul Hakim, is etched in pop culture in Mumbai. There’s a sketch by the legendary M.F. Hussain at the entrance, made specially in honor of his meals at the restaurant. There’s also a dish on the menu contributed by the Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt (the Chicken Sanju Baba). At one point, migrants without a fixed home would give the restaurant as their address for letters. After turning 100 years old in 2023, Noor Mohammadi solidified itself as a living part of the fabric of Mumbai’s history.

Bachelorr's

If you fancy a late-night haul of carbohydrates, park your car next to Bachelorrs and wait for an enthusiastic server to come running to your vehicle. Within a few minutes you’ll be feasting on grilled sandwiches oozing with melted cheese, thick shakes, and seasonal fruits with cream. If it’s summer, eat anything on the menu that includes mango. When it’s winter, change to strawberries.

Shree Thaker Bhojanalay

No one in Mumbai does a thali better than Shree Thaker Bhojanalay, the crown jewel of Gujarati hospitality in the city. The vegetarian meal features over 20 traditional items carefully arranged on the plate in a very specific order, including some Rajasthani delicacies. In winter, Thaker will serve undhiyu, a painstaking specialty of the city of Surat made overnight. There’s a giant photo wall behind the register, where you can spot culinary legends like David Chang, Mauro Colagreco, and Nigella Lawson, who have all been humbled by the restaurant’s thali. The servers will refill your plate endlessly despite any protests; the meal is over when they say it’s over.

A variety of dishes crammed into a platter.

Kyani and Company

A haven for college students for several decades, Kyani is still cheap, fast, and a go-to pick for a quick breakfast. Time freezes when you enter the restaurant, with its mirrored walls, wooden chairs, and aroma of freshly brewing tea. Get chicken puffs, bun maska (buttered bread), Irani chai, mawa cake, and a serving of eggs.

Britannia and Co.

No restaurant list in Mumbai is complete without a mention of Britannia, the Irani cafe that made mutton berry pulao a household name in the city. Made with tart zereshk berries (barberries) from Iran and tender pieces of lamb, the dish has remained consistent in a city that’s changing constantly. While it’s no longer an affordable order for the average Mumbaikar, eating a portion is a rite of passage. Pair with Pallonji’s soda and an order of dhansak (lentils stewed with lamb) for a nostalgic lunch in south Mumbai. For nearly a century, the restaurant was overseen by the beaming face of Boman Kohinoor, the third-generation owner and a city icon who saw the restaurant open in 1923 and died in 2019.

In the bylanes of Fort sits Deluxe, one of the few places you can enjoy a Kerala-style vegetarian sadhya lunch on a banana leaf. Both the avial (mixed vegetables cooked with coconut and yogurt) and the parippu (lentil curry) are worth second helpings. Order a plate of prawn fry and karimeen fry (pearlspot fish) as sides. Don’t be afraid to eat with your hands; it’s the only way to enjoy the meal.

Cafe Military

The city’s close-knit Iranian community, many descended from Zoroastrians who came to Mumbai after fleeing religious persecution, run a number of cafes that double as grocery stores. Military, one of the few Irani cafes where you can grab a chilled beer along with your food, has fed entire generations of families around Fort. Check the menu for the day’s specials, or go for the foolproof salli boti (sweet and tangy slow-cooked lamb curry) and lamb mince biryani. The brain fry will melt in your mouth.

The collection of dishes in the lagan nu bhonu feast at Jimmy Boy is a fantastic way to get acquainted with the best of Parsi wedding classics. Look for patrani machhi — a whole fish covered with a thick coconut and green chile chutney, steamed in banana leaves — as well as chicken farcha (Parsi-style fried chicken), mutton pulao, and dhansak (lentils stewed with lamb). The vegetarian variation includes a cashew vegetable curry. Make sure you try a bottle of the bright, almost suspiciously pink Pallonji’s soda.

Chef Alex Sanchez is no stranger to the restaurant scene in Mumbai. His run at the Table influenced how several peers would view dining in the city. His second restaurant, Americano, which he opened with partner Mallyeka Watsa, is often interpreted as an Italian restaurant, despite having influences from all over. Every small plate is chic, highlighting its ingredients. Try the sweetcorn ribs, duck ravioli, and shaved Brussels sprouts. Americano’s bar program would warrant a visit even without the food. Sample the Amaize Balls cocktail with tequila, peach jam, and salted corn, which lives up to its name.

A late night of drinking in Mumbai has to end with a customary roll at one of the city’s Mughlai or Punjabi restaurants. Ayub’s is an old-timer in the city, having served billionaires and students in equal measure. Get a plate of mutton baida roti (bread stuffed with eggs and minced lamb), paneer tikka roll (cottage cheese wrapped inside pillowy roomali roti), and a side plate of bhurji (hard-curd scrambled eggs tossed with masalas). Everything pairs well with a bottle of Coke.

The Table was years ahead of its time when it opened in Mumbai, introducing terms like “farm-to-table” and “cuisine agnostic” to a city that had never heard them before. Since the restaurant opened, the fine dining culture in the city has advanced by leaps and bounds. Owned by Gauri Devidayal and Jay Yousuf, the Table still has it. Standouts on the menu include the yellowfin tuna tataki, boneless chicken wings, and blackened Norwegian salmon.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by The Table (@thetable_colaba)

Ling's Pavilion

Ling’s Pavilion, created by the owners of Mumbai’s iconic (now shut) Nanking, is one of the oldest Chinese restaurants in the city. The menu is vast, the servers have been around for decades, and Baba Ling, the owner of the establishment, will guide you through the specials with a smile. The steamed chicken wontons are a must order, as are the roast pork with shiitake mushrooms and the hakka noodles. The portions are large, so bring a big group of friends to attack the menu.

A dish of dumplings beneath chopped toppings.

Bagdadi Restaurant

The owners of Bagdadi claim the restaurant is 125 years old. Once you’re inside, spend a couple of minutes soaking in the aesthetic, which — despite a recent renovation — has remained untouched. Ask for melt-in-your-mouth shami kebabs, mutton pulao, fried potatoes, and caramel custard. Keep a lookout for the daily specials, especially dabba gosht (mutton curry finished with egg batter and tempered with oil). End your meal with black tea, and stroll around the Gateway of India to digest.

The Cacao Mill By Subko

Ever since opening the first outlet in Bandra three years ago, Subko’s name has become synonymous with artisanal coffee and some of the best French patisserie in Mumbai. The latest opening, the Cacao Mill, is a haven for chocolate lovers. Sample the sea buckthorn almond and pistachio cherry cubes before making your way to the signature kouign amann and haleem quiche by chef Daniel Trulson (of Bread & Chocolate fame). You can also take a tour of the chocolate-making facilities if you’d like to find out how your treats are made.

There were a few surprises as well, including several new restaurants making the list, like Veronica’s, which entered straight into the top 10! Here are the best restaurants in Mumbai right now, as per Top Restaurant Awards 2023:

Along with founder and entrepreneur Aditi Dugar, the restaurant’s 10-course seasonal chef’s tasting menus marry tradition and innovation, transforming homegrown produce into fine-dining dishes. So, a Lonavala inspired chocolate fudge gets topped with kachampuli ice cream, Coorg’s pandi curry is made with jackfruit sausage, and the winter favourite Gujarati snack ponkh bhel is zhuzhed up with Goan seaweed. The menu at The Bombay Canteen changes seasonally, but favourites include the restaurant’s signature eggs Kejriwal, ghee roast chicken seekh and chilled seabass “sev puri”. Its playful approach to food and affinity for Mumbai extends to its bar menu, with its 5th Canteen Cocktail Book featuring drinks like the tequila-based Waiting List and the citrusy Curb Side. The energetic bar mixes up signature concoctions like the Pedro’s G&T, the Kokum Stings featuring kokum infused rum and the Vasco Sour with pisco, triple sec and Goan toddy. Bright colours, quirky sayings on the walls and cheery servers are as much a part of the O Pedro experience as the lipsmacking food, from the coconut-ey crab kismoor and signature prawn balchao to the fluffy poees with choriz butter and creamy, crunchy mushroom ceviche. The flakey pastel de nata (Portuguese egg custard tarts) and Aunty Li’s serradura hark back to Goa’s rich Portuguese influences and are not to be missed. The all-day sandwich shop and deli has a tight menu that focuses on honest, good quality sandwiches, like the Taming The (Mu)Shroom Melt and the Avo Snob made with house-made Ciabatta, fresh pesto and burrata. The meat-based sandwiches like the generously smoked beef loaded Pass the Pastrami and Nashville-style hot fried chicken sandwich the Big Floyd are some of the restaurant’s bestsellers. Wash down the carbs with a glass of wine, or Vietnamese iced coffee. The restaurant is among the best restaurants in Mumbai, and top 10 India’s best restaurants, within just a year of its opening—a testament to its quality breads, meats, fresh ingredients and easy atmosphere that pulls in diners across age groups. Here, robust and vibrant flavours define every dish, with tapas like the Gambas al Ajillo featuring smoky prawns on a bed of fragrant garlic infused oil, fresh pumpkin and black bean tacos, crunchy patatas bravas and juicy, succulent Albondigas or lamb meatballs. Best restaurants in Mumbai

The Table

1.  The Table

This romantic, bi-level, upscale eatery is a pioneer of Mumbai’s farm-to-table revolution, adopting international culinary trends and applying them to a local context. It serves fresh produce from its own farm in Alibaug. Draped with wispy curtains stretched across the walls, floor-to-ceiling windows and named after the 20-foot long Burma teak community dining table near its bar, The Table is an absolute go-to spot if you’re craving a magnificently special meal.

Price: Pricey

Shree Thaker Bhojanalay

2.  Shree Thaker Bhojanalay

One of Mumbai’s best kept secrets, this vegetarian Gujarati eatery offers an “eat until you drop” experience. To sample the very best, opt for the thaali : a round platter that includes six rotis, six curries, two papad variants, buttermilk, curd,  three kinds of desserts, chaat, vegetable roll and more.

Price: Bargain

Wasabi by Morimoto

3.  Wasabi by Morimoto

In addition to delectable food, this award-winning traditional Japanese restaurant offers the best views in town of the Gateway of India. The fiery red interiors complete with installations depicting cherry blossoms and traditional wooden Japanese joinery walls will transport you to Japan, especially when paired with the ingredients flown in from Tokyo weekly and the multicultural cooking techniques used by the staff. Make sure to try the rare sakes. Bonus points: the restaurant also serves vegetarian, gluten-free and vegan meals.

The Bombay Canteen

4.  The Bombay Canteen

In the historic setting of an old colonial bungalow, the Bombay Canteen boasts its own important history, too. By providing modern twists on Indian regional dishes, TBC changed the way an entire city eats. It’s also simply a lovely place to have a munch – ideally for having a pleasant time with friends or family.

Price: Average

Britannia & Co.

5.  Britannia & Co.

Located in the genteel precinct of Mumbai’s Ballard Estate, Britannia & Co. is a vintage, heritage eatery and perhaps one of the oldest symbols of the locally dying Parsi cuisine. Opened in the 19th century by Zoroastrians from Iran, Britannia & Co. is a magnificent time capsule of Mumbai’s past. Try the berry pulao with some dhansak along with the creme caramel, the most famous dish here.

The Clearing House

6.  The Clearing House

The Clearing House is found in a relatively quiet area, rendering the restaurant an oasis in the middle of Mumbai’s maddening but historic quarters. The eatery is split into two sections: a sunlit foyer that is ideal for Sunday brunch and a more sombre chamber for the evenings. You’ll eat contemporary western cuisine with an eastern treatment: think a touch of kimchi, a sprinkle of edamame or teriyaki sauce in your dishes.

O Pedro

7.  O Pedro

Head to this slick restaurant and bar to experience authentic Goan cuisine in just as genuine a setting. Sample the Portuguese-inspired dish poee (house-baked sourdough) and wash it down with one of the many signature cocktails—we’re partial to the Pedro G&T. Sit back, relax and settle into a beach-like state of mind without having to take a trip to the neighbouring state.

Bastian

8.  Bastian

An Instagram worthy two-floor restaurant boasting a nautical theme is the pet project of the very savvy chef Kelvin Cheung. Trivia fact: the eatery gets its name from the all-knowing crab Sebastian of Disney’s Little Mermaid fame. An Asian-inspired alternative spot to Mumbai’s run of the mill seafood restaurants, Bastian is a favourite of the city’s hipsters and Bollywood A-listers. Try the famous lobster roll, butter-poached lobster and the black-pepper crab. You might want to consider getting your hands dirty with the snapper carpaccio, made with high-quality seasonal ingredients sourced locally.

Hakkasan

9.  Hakkasan

Dim sum might not be the first thing you think about when you think of Mumbai’s foodie scene, but believe us – it most certainly should. Nowhere in the city does dim sum quite like Hakkasan, which’ll let you either have a five-course lunch with fruit drink or choose from the à la carte menu. If it’s down to use, we go for the chicken shumai, grilled shanghai and edamame dumplings, then wash it down with a cup of tea and the dark choccie mousse.

Cafe Madras

10.  Cafe Madras

Found in Kings Circle, this is Mumbai’s most cherished South Indian restaurant. If you’re bored of all the fine dining and expensive food joints around town, the unassuming interiors at Cafe Madras will surely please you. Beware, though: the eatery is perpetually crowded with college students, senior citizens and young workers. May we suggest striking a conversation with one of them while digging into peppery rasam, airy medu wadas, crunchy dosas and a cup of coffee?

Mumbai’s food scene—made up of a mix of high-end restaurants, cheap eats, street food and more—is shaped by a fusion of cultures, including an indigenous fishing community and the secrets from the home kitchens of century-old migrants (the Muslim sultans! Jews! Portuguese and British colonialists!).

1. Vada Pav – The Mumbai Burger

places to visit for food in mumbai

In the bustling streets of Mumbai, where the cacophony of honking horns and the chatter of hurried pedestrians create a symphony of urban life, a humble yet iconic street food has become synonymous with the city’s culinary identity – Vada Pav.

Affectionately known as the “Mumbai Burger,” this delectable snack is more than just a quick bite; it’s a cultural phenomenon, a culinary journey that encapsulates the city’s spirit in every flavorful morsel.

At first glance, Vada Pav seems unassuming – a simple assembly of a spiced potato cake encased in a soft pav (bread roll) and accompanied by chutneys.

However, delve deeper, and you uncover a narrative that intertwines history, affordability, and the unique flavours that define Mumbai’s street food culture.

The heart of Vada Pav lies in its core component – the vada. A spiced potato mixture seasoned with mustard seeds, curry leaves, green chillies, and other aromatic spices is shaped into a round patty.

This concoction is then coated in a gram flour batter and deep-fried to golden perfection, creating a crisp that gives way to a silky, flavorful interior.

The vada becomes a canvas where Mumbai’s diverse culinary influences converge, resulting in a savoury delight that resonates with locals and visitors.

Now, let’s turn our attention to the pav, the vessel that cradles this culinary masterpiece. Soft and slightly sweet, the pav is reminiscent of the Portuguese bread that made its way to the shores of Mumbai through centuries of trade and cultural exchange.

The merging of indigenous flavours with foreign influences is a recurring theme in Mumbai’s culinary tapestry, and Vada Pav exemplifies this fusion.

As the years passed, Vada Pav evolved from a quick lunch option for the working class to an integral part of Mumbai’s street food culture.

It became a beloved snack for students, office-goers, and tourists alike. The sight of street vendors deftly assembling Vada Pav, the sizzle of vadas in hot oil, and the aroma of chutneys wafting through the air became quintessential experiences for anyone navigating the streets of Mumbai.

The nickname “Mumbai Burger” is not just a playful moniker; it’s a recognition of the parallels between the global fascination with burgers and the local adoration for Vada Pav.

Both are handheld, flavorful, and emblematic of a city’s culinary ethos. Just as a burger encapsulates the essence of American fast food, Vada Pav embodies the spirit of Mumbai’s fast-paced, diverse, and inclusive culinary landscape.

Beyond its culinary prowess, Vada Pav is a cultural equalizer, a unifying force that brings people from all walks of life to the same street-side counters.

It’s a snack that sparks conversations, breaks barriers, and fosters a sense of community among those who gather around the ubiquitous red chutney-drenched stalls.

In a city where time is a precious commodity, and every meal is a hurried affair, Vada Pav stands as a culinary companion – quick, satisfying, and deeply rooted in the ethos of Mumbai.

It’s a snack that reflects the resilience and resourcefulness of a city that finds joy in life’s simple pleasures.

So, the next time you sink your teeth into a Vada Pav on the crowded streets of Mumbai, remember that you’re not just tasting a snack; you’re partaking in a cultural legacy, savouring the Mumbai Burger that has woven itself into the fabric of the city’s vibrant culinary narrative.

7 Must Visit Street Food Places in Mumbai

7 Must Visit Street Food Places in Mumbai

It's true when they say that a city's pulse can only be felt on its streets and while all Indian cities are bustling, Mumbai 's pulse is racing (literally). Like swarms of bees out on a mission, there's always a reason to be out and about scouring flea markets, enjoying the sea view, or just chilling with friends. But this picture of Mumbai's streets seems incomplete, almost colourless without the popular street food stalls at road junctions or narrow lanes that add the much needed masala in our lives. Imagine a rainy day in college without the cutting chai and oh-god-so-good vada pav or a hectic day of street shopping without quick on-the-go snacks like some lip-smacking pav bhaji . Unimaginable, isn't it? Street food in Mumbai is almost like the city's identity.A bhel puri of cultures and refreshingly diverse influences - coastal to Irani, South Indian to Punjabi and of course Maharashtrian - street food in Mumbai offers a unique potpourri of flavours that is incredibly satisfying. While there are way too many contenders for this list, here's presenting 7 that top our favourite list -

2. Kebabs @Sarvi

Aaswad bagged the award for The Worlds Tastiest Vegetarian Dish for its Misal Pav at the global Foodie Hub Awards held in London just last month. What more need be said about this mouth-watering Maharashtrian breakfast dish? This dish is not merely a delight for your taste buds but is also a complete healthy meal made of mixed beans sprouts, spices, chopped onions and tomatoes. Home-made spices and the magic of crunchy farsan (the munchies of Maharashtrian cuisine made of gram flour) have made Aaswads misal irresistable for the last 30 years.

The cold seawater lapping at your feet, the setting sun and soothing breeze, a leisurely walk along Chowpathy beach with your loved ones while munching on some bhel puri is what Mumbaikars love to do. A type of chaat made with puffed rice, exotic spices, onions and tangy chutneys, bhel puri has never failed to mesmerise the young and old alike.

6. Falooda @Badshah

One thing we can definitely be thankful to the Mughal kings is for introducing us to falooda. A modern twist to Faloodeh, which is a Persian dessert, falooda is made of vermicelli, rose syrup and sabza seeds in creamy, thick milk. A lot of its variants also have kulfi , making it the rapturous kulfi-falooda. There isn't one falooda -fan in Mumbai who wouldn't vouch for the creamy treat at Badshah in Crawford Street. With over 100 years of unrelenting service to its loyal customers, Badshah has become a landmark in itself. If you have a sweet tooth that doesn't let you escape the allure of this refreshing dessert, you have to try the Badshahi and Royal Falooda at this iconic eatery.

The pani puri here is claimed by many to be the best they've ever had. With their crunchy puri (round, hollow, fried crisps), mouth-watering pani (flavoured water with tamarind chutney, chilli and chaat masala) and onion-potato stuffing, this claim is undeniably well-deserved.

Please note: the pani is made with mineral water, which makes it a hit with the health conscious lot. Elco has been around for over 40 years and is still going strong with its tempting delights.

10 Best Street Food in Mumbai That You Can’t Miss in 2024

Budget Hotels > Travel Blog > Destinations > Mumbai > 10 Best Street Food in Mumbai That You Can’t Miss in 2024

Marco Pierre White, the celebrated British chef, once said: “Gastronomy is the best greatest form of therapy anyone can be exposed to”. If Marco is right, the streets of Mumbai are nothing less than therapy centers. Whether you are feeling happy or sad, had a good day at work or a really bad one, fell head over heels in love or had a bad break-up, the city’s street food will lift your mood instantly. When we say street food, we are not talking about ten or twenty shops dotted here and there on streets; we are talking about hundreds of them, each better than the other. And, the food these serve will put even the signature items in Michelin-star restaurants to shame.

So, are you ready for a gastronomical tour through the food streets of the city? Read on as we give you a rundown of 10 popular items the city plates up for you along the best places to eat street food in Mumbai.

Street food in Mumbai

1. pav bhaji, mumbai.

Pav Bhaji | Street food in Mumbai

Pav Bhaji | #1 of 10 Street food in Mumbai

Let’s start with a dish with a history of over 150 years and pretty interesting at that – Pav Bhaji. Originating during the 1850s as a lunchtime dish for the city’s textile workers, it went on to become the most sought-after street food dish in Mumbai. The dish consists of two parts – a thick curry made from mashed vegetables with spices, and fluffy bread rolls buttered lavishly. The curry is usually topped with a slab of butter, and yes, one look at this dish is enough to make you its lifelong fan. What’s more? The dish has a number of variants, such as Cheese Pav Bhaji, Paneer Pav Bhaji and Mushroom Pav Bhaji. So, go to a street shop, get a plate of this lip-smacking delicacy, and dig in with your fingers. Remember, Pav Bhaji is such a heavenly dish that it’s considered a crime to leave the city (or live in it) without trying it. Click to to know more about places to visit in Mumbai

  • Where to Try: Sardar Refreshments (Tardeo), Cannon Pav Bhaji (opposite CST Station), Shree Siddhivinayak Fast Food (Juhu Beach), Amar Juice Centre (Vile Parle West)

2. Vada Pav, Mumbai

Vada Pav | Street food in Mumbai

Vada Pav | #2 of 10 Street food in Mumbai

One of the most widespread and easily available street snacks in the city, Vada Pav is also known as India’s vegetarian burger. Can you Guess why? In its physical form, the snack resembles a burger – it consists of a batter-fried potato patty (called Vada) placed between a bread bun (called Pav) sliced in half. When you order a plate of Vada Pav, it usually comes garnished with one or more chutneys, both sweet and spicy; the fried chilies served along with it are sure to give you a burst of heat. This grab-and-go snack is the best way to lift your spirits on a gloomy day or after a hard day’s work. Try it with a glass of chai, and ah, blissful it is!

  • Where to Try: Ashok Vada Pav (Kirti College Lane), Anand (Vile Parle West), Parleshwar Vada Pav Samrat (Parleshwar), Aram Vada Pav (Opposite CST station), Gajanan Vada Pav (Thane)

3. Pani Puri, Mumbai

Pani Puri | Street food in Mumbai

Pani Puri | #3 of 10 Street food in Mumbai

How often do you come across snacks that are not just tasty but also a delight to watch being prepared and absolute fun gobbling down? Well, Pani Puri is one such street snack. Small crispy puris are first poked with a thumb to ae a hole, then half-filled with a mixture of chickpeas, potatoes, onion, and chilies, and finally dunked into flavored water known as imli pani . To stop the puri from getting soggy, you should eat it immediately after the vendor hands it to you. And, get ready for the best part, you have to eat it whole.

The sweet and sour water fills your mouth along with the savory flavors of potatoes and chickpeas, tickling your taste buds like nothing else. Of all the street snacks in Mumbai, this is an absolute stunner and for all the right reasons. However, you should be a little careful about where you eat it. Our two cents – eat from street stalls that use mineral or filtered water unless you want to end up with an upset stomach.

  • Where to Try: Badshah Pani Puri (Girgaon Chowpatty), Elco Pani Puri Centre (Bandra West), Guru Kripa (SIES College), Punjab Sweet House (Bandra West), Juhu Beach chaat counters

4. Bhel Puri, Mumbai

Bhel Puri | Street food in Mumbai

Bhel Puri | #4 of 10 Street food in Mumbai

Remember the song, “ Main toh raste se ja raha tha, Main toh bhel puri kha raha tha” ( I was walking through the road, I was eating Bhel Puri) from the 1995 comedy film Coolie No.1 ? Believe it or not, every true Mumbaikar must have done this – walking through the road eating Bhel Puri – at least once in their life. And now, it’s your turn to join the pack. All you need to do is head to any of the busy beaches or streets in the city, and you will find this all-day snack right there at the stalls. The snack is pretty simple, consisting of puffed rice and sev , into which chopped potatoes, onions, and tomatoes are added. A variety of chutneys are also added to this mix, making it sweet, tangy, and spicy, all at the same time. You can find different variations of the dish based on how vendors prepare it, but the balanced flavors of this mouth-watering snack will make you an instant addict. And, you will be walking through the road eating it, just as the song says! Read also – Things to do in Mumbai

5. Ragda Pattice, Mumbai

Ragda Pattice | Street food in Mumbai

Ragda Pattice | #5 of 10 Street food in Mumbai

Your gastronomical experience of touring through the city will fall flat if you don’t add one item to your must-eat list – a plate of Ragda Pattice. The preparation of this flavorful dish has two parts – ragda (a soft stew made using chickpeas and spices) and deep-fried pattice (patties) made with mashed potatoes. When you order a plate of this dish, you will get two pattices drowned in ragda . The dish is garnished with chopped onions, green chutney, coriander leaves, tamarind chutney, and sev, giving this quintessential Mumbai chaat the final form. No wonder, it ranks top among the best veg street food dishes in Mumbai.

  • Where to Try: Kailash Parbat (Colaba), Guru Kripa (SIES College), Sharma Chaat Bandar (Vile Parle West), Gupta Chaat Centre (Matunga)

6. Kebabs and Rolls, Mumbai

Kebabs and Rolls | Street food in Mumbai

Kebabs and Rolls | #6 of 10 Street food in Mumbai

By now, any seasoned and intelligent foodie must have started wondering if Mumbai’s street food is all about vegetarian delicacies. All you carnivores out there, we have got good news for you: the city’s streets are havens for meat eaters. The number of non-veg stalls here and the items they serve will make you drool like a child. When you want to explore the best non veg street food in Mumbai, start with kebabs and rolls. Skewered kebabs are an absolute stunner of a street food, to say the least. Don’t believe us? Walk through the Mohammed Ali Road and you will be transported to another world – the world of sizzling, melt-in-the-mouth kebabs.

Taste these meaty treats once and you will start swearing by them. The same goes true for rolls, especially chicken tikka rolls and bhuna rolls. Spicy boneless chicken wrapped in thin roomali rotis , these rolls are the best street food in Mumbai to gorge at night. Some of the vendors like Bademiya are open till 03:00 am! Once you have had your fill, keep rolling; we’ve got more places to cover.

  • Where to Try: Bademiya (Colaba), Sarvi (Nagpada), Ayub’s (Dr. VB Gandhi Marg), Nice Eat Fast Food Corner (Santacruz West), stalls along Mohammed Ali Road

7. Baida Roti, Mumbai

Baida Roti | Street food in Mumbai

Baida Roti | #7 of 10 Street food in Mumbai

What came first, chicken or egg? No one knows the answer to this mystery, but if you want to have both in one dish, we know the answer – Baida Roti. The word ‘baida’ means egg and this dish is an egg-based pan-fried envelop stuffed with more whipped egg, minced meat, onions, and spices. There are different varieties of this roti based on the type of meat used, so you could go for a chicken, mutton, or even brain-fry Baida Roti. Squeeze half a lemon on the roti, dip it in the green chutney or cucumber raita served along with it, and take a bite; you will feel the flavors exploding in your mouth. 8. Mumbai Sandwich, Mumbai

Mumbai Sandwich | Street food in Mumbai

Mumbai Sandwich | #8 of 10 Street food in Mumbai

Nah, sandwiches are not something you would typically classify as quintessentially Mumbai food, let alone Indian food. Wait before you judge, my friend. The Mumbai or Bombay version is not your regular sandwich; it is prepared with ingredients you would least expect to find in a sandwich. Walk through any food street in the city, and you will see vendors preparing and plating up this street-side bestseller with dexterity.

Like all sandwiches, the Mumbai version also has two slices of generously buttered white bread. A mixture of mint chutney, beetroots, tomatoes, masala potatoes, and shredded cheese is stuffed between these bread slices. The vendor will cut it into triangles and serve it to you on a plate along with chutney. Each bite will fill your mouth with the most revitalizing tangy taste and redefine your idea of the sandwich forever. The dish also has a toasted version, crispy on the edges and steamed on the inside.

  • Where to Try: Amar Juice Centre (near Cooper Hospital), Mafco Stall (Worli Seaface), Sandwizzas (Santacruz West), Lucky Sandwich (Vile Parle Station), Anand (Vile Parle West)

9. Batata Vada, Mumbai

Batata Vada | Street food in Mumbai

Batata Vada | #9 of 10 Street food in Mumbai

Literally translates into potato fritters, this is another delicious all-day snack from the streets of Mumbai. The word batata means potatoes, and no, the word is neither Hindi nor Marathi; it’s Portuguese! Remember, it was Portuguese who first introduced potatoes to our country. Consisting of a patty made of mashed potatoes and spices, which is then dipped in chickpea flour batter and deep-fried, the dish looks like a thick sphere. You will get one or more chutneys and green chilies as accompaniments; it is best had with a steaming cup of coffee or tea.

  • Where to Try: You will find Batata Vada sellers in every corner of Mumbai, each selling their own version. Try as many versions as you like

10. Falooda, Mumbai

Falooda | Street food in Mumbai

Falooda | #10 of 10 Street food in Mumbai

Now that you have had a lot of spicy, tangy snacks, how about something sweet?! We would go for a glass of cool and smooth Falooda any day; and so should you. And the reason? It is ubiquitous in the city of Mumbai. From local vendors to 5-star establishments, everyone sells it, albeit in different forms and flavors. Even die-hard fans of Falooda still debate over whether it is a beverage or dessert, but does it really matter!?

A royal favorite of the kings of Persia and brought to India by the Mughals, Falooda has a long and interesting history. Today, it is available in a wide variety, each boasting unique flavors. Typically, a glass of this rich dessert has layers of silky vermicelli noodles, rose syrup, jelly, vanilla essence, milk, almonds and pistachios, sabza or basil seeds, topped with one or two scoops of ice cream. Drink it on a hot summer day and you will have an instant cool down.

  • Where to Try: Baba Falooda (Mahim West), Bachelorr’s (CST), Badshah (Crawford Market), Shalimar Cool Point (Mohammed Ali Road), Hali Ali Juice Centre (Cumballa Hill)

We know this blog hardly does any justice to the rich and flavorful street snacks and dishes Mumbai offers to foodies. There’s certainly more to add to the list. From Misal Pav, Naan Chaap, Dahi Puri, and Sev Puri to Kanda Poha, Kulfi, and Akuri on Toast, a vast world of delicacies is waiting to be explored by you. Take your time, head out of your hotel in Mumbai , walk through the streets, explore your options, and taste all of these and more. Remember, when you are in the city of Mumbai, all roads lead to food.
